PUBLISHER’S LETTER: CHANGE IS... Good? Terrifying? A little of both. Here we go. 2017 is already a year of big changes and plans, on many levels, and CGN is embracing the spirit of a new year and a new way of doing things as we build on our 34 year legacy and introduce a comprehensive, annual arts guide in a new size and format.

CGN Publisher, Ginny B. Van Alyea Photo: Jessica Tampas

Chicago Gallery News was founded in 1983 (originally as Superior Huron News) as a way to collectively promote the shows and openings of just 16 galleries, in what is now River North. Soon, the gallery community grew beyond just one district, and the magazine’s coverage and format expanded too.

During summer 2016 in the CGN office, we started to reenvision how we could improve on our traditional listings model and better share our wealth of arts information with the public across all of our platforms. We decided that even in a digital age our strength remains in our print publications, after all we do cover a visual, tactile world. We are also very mindful of the fact that so much of what we communicate must be timely – on our website, in our e-newsletters, and on social media. The CGN Arts Guide is our way to make the best of both worlds: our printed listings – our galleries, museums and art spaces – are front and center, while on chicagogallerynews.com current shows, openings, artist talks, art fairs, auctions and other events are updated frequently. We will continue to publish our summer and fall magazines in May and September, in our larger format, featuring expanded interviews and news alongside seasonal exhibition and event highlights. 2017 seemed like the right time to examine our art scene with fresh eyes. It will be a year filled with a host of significant art events and milestones, from the City of Chicago’s Year of Public Art, to the return of the Chicago Architecture Biennial, the celebration of the MCA’s 50th anniversary, and more. It takes tremendous passion and hard work, from a great many people, to make a culture thrive, and the dynamism we enjoy in Chicago and beyond must regularly be renewed. The Arts Guide embodies the variety and depth of arts and culture in the region today, and going forward it will also serve as a chronicle of the times as they change and flourish. There are a few key people who have made The Arts Guide a reality. Alison Reilly has lent her fresh ideas, young energy and invaluable insights to me ever since she joined CGN in November 2015. This guide is the future of CGN, and it’s largely thanks to her hard work and vision. I am also grateful to artist Carlos Rolón/Dzine for generously sharing his art, Flooded with Ecstasy, for our vibrant cover. Thank you also to the loyal dealers who provided a great deal of feedback on how to make this guide a helpful resource for everyone, in particular Dan Addington and William Lieberman. I am especially grateful to my husband and children, who are supportive of me in every way and very understanding of printing deadlines. And, of course, I thank all of our wonderful readers. Cheers to you and to art in 2017. 13

The City of Chicago Designates 2017 The Year of Public Art 50 years ago on August 15, 1967, Pablo Picasso’s 50 foot tall, abstract steel sculpture was donated to the city and unveiled in Daley Plaza. Chicago’s long and rich tradition of making public art an accessible, often times literally monumental, part of our every day lives, has only continued to expand and evolve. Today, thousands of tourists visit Anish Kapoor’s Cloud Gate (known more casually as “The Bean”) and just as many local children splash in the spray of Jaume Plensa’s interactive, face changPicasso’s untitled sculpture caused a stir when it was first revealed. ing Crown Fountain each Today public opinion is primarily supportive, though it is a piece that still continues to inspire discussion and opinions. summer. It is art that gives Chicago much of its creative character and international appeal. In recognition of this legacy, The City of Chicago has announced a Public Art initiative and schedule for the entire year; the Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events has coined 2017 as the Year of Public Art, with a slate of planned public exhibitions, and pledged a $1.5 million investment designated to support permanent public art installations throughout the city’s 50 wards. Mayor Rahm Emanuel, expressing a personal interest in public art projects notes, “There is no question that art is vital to a neighborhood’s spirit and the quality of life for residents.” The program is designed to share art with residents in every single neighborhood, not just the downtown tourist centers. Events will showcase several neighborhoods and their unique creativity. Venues include DuSable Museum of African American History, South Side Community Art Center, Daley Plaza, National Museum of Mexican Art, and more. A significant cornerstone for the Year of Public Art will be the Public Art Festival premiering in the fall and offering free activities for people of all ages. A Museum of the New Turns 50: The MCA’s Big Birthday

MCA Chicago front steps. Photo: Nathan Keay, © MCA Chicago.

One of Chicago’s leading arts institutions has hit middle-age: The Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2017. Grounded in a mission devoted to the curation of contemporary art and to performance through experimentation and collaboration, today the MCA claims an expansive, diverse collection of contemporary works as well as a range of socially-conscious programs, artist initiatives and community outreach. Many influential international artists can trace their start back to exhibitions nurtured here – the MCA hosted Jeff Koons’s first solo museum show. The MCA first opened at 237 E Ontario (the former Playboy headquarters) as a Kunsthalle—non-collecting art hall—in 1967. Over the past half century the MCA became the first building wrapped by Christo in the United States (1969), established a permanent collection, commissioned a building to house that collection (the present space opened in 1996 at 220 E Chicago), presented a landmark survey of Chicago artists and artistic traditions – Art in Chicago, 1945–1995 – began a noted public plaza series, and much more. 50th anniversary celebrations will continue throughout the year, including a major, three-part exhibition on view from the end of October through January 28, 2018, titled, I Am You, You Are Here, We Are Everywhere. A public opening for the exhibition takes place on October 21. Up-to-date event and exhibition information can be found at mcachicago.org

Second Chicago Architecture Biennial to Coincide with Sixth EXPO Chicago

Pedro & Juana, Randolph Square, Courtesy of Chicago Architecture Biennial / Steve Hall, 2015

2017 marks the second celebration of the Chicago Architecture Biennial. In partnership with City of Chicago, EXPO Chicago and others, the biennial will explore the theme MAKE NEW HISTORY by presenting diverse work from local, national and international architects. The Chicago cityscape will serve as the backdrop for the development of new architectural projects, proposals, and experiments that consider role of architectural traditions within progress and innovation. More than half a million Chicago residents and tourists attended the 2015 Biennial. The focus this year will again be on engagement with the public by using the Chicago Cultural Center as the main hub. The Cultural Center, along with Hyde Park Art Center, The Beverly Art Center and others, will host a full schedule of exhibitions, events, and public programming. Architects Sharon Johnston and Mark Lee will serve as artistic directors. Their firm, Johnston Marklee, has completed projects in North and South American, Europe and Asia and is currently working on a renovation of the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, which is scheduled to be complete in the summer of 2017. The Biennial will take place city-wide from September 16, 2017– January 7, 2018, with the opening aligning with the sixth annual EXPO Chicago, which will run September 13-17 at Navy Pier. A Year of Exhibitions to Mark Outsider Henry Darger’s 125th Birthday In celebration of Henry Darger’s 125th birthday, Intuit: The Center for Intuitive and Outsider Art presents five exhibitions in 2017. Darger, who was born in Chicago and lived in a one-room apartment in Lincoln Park for most of his life, was a prolific self-taught artist and author. By day Darger lived as a hospital janitor and dishwasher, but at home in his apartment-turnedstudio he was secretly writing thousand-page novels and illustrating hundreds of drawings. Intuit is home to The Henry Darger Room Collection, which offers a rare window into the Henry Darger (American, 1892-1973). COLONEL JACK F EVANS, mid-twentieth life of this reclusive century. This year, visitors Rights Society ( ARS), NY, Photo credit: Gavin Ashworth, ©American Folk Art will also have the Museum / Art Resource, NY opportunity to view a number of exhibitions, which explore Darger’s own writing and work, along with work by other artists who immerse themselves in complex, otherworldly places. Darger’s 15,000 page unpublished novel, The Story of the Vivian Girls, in What Is Known as the Realms of the Unreal, of the Glandeco-Angelinian War Storm, Caused by the Child Slave Rebellion, now referred to as Realms of the Unreal, was discovered in 1972 by Darger’s landlord, Nathan Lerner, who was cleaning out his former tenant’s room. Along with the novel, more than 350 watercolors, pencil drawings and collages were found. The suite of exhibitions, organized by Intuit in partnership with the American Folk Art Museum in New York, juxtaposes Darger’s writing alongside his visual art, while contextualizing the artist in the historical tradition of the epic novel. JEAN ALBANO GALLERY

RN

Jean Albano Gallery promotes both artists who have helped shaped Chicago’s art scene as well as artists who have a large presence internationally. CARL HAMMER GALLERY

RN

The Carl Hammer Gallery specializes in exhibiting both modern and contemporary art of the 20th and 21st centuries with, historically, an emphasis on its discovery and promotion of select Outsider artists internationally. Renowned throughout the world for this unique blend of artists, their visions and their backgrounds, with additional proclivity for exhibiting artists who use figuration within their art, Carl Hammer Gallery has established a somewhat singular niche among other 21st century contemporary art gallery venues. Outsider art has a prominent place influencing both exhibition criteria and artist representation within the gallery. Especially known for pioneering much of the scholarship and connoisseurship leading to the incorporation of Outsider artists like Henry Darger, Bill Traylor, Joseph Yoakum and Eugene Von Bruenchenhein into the contemporary art mainstream, the dialogue between the academically taught artist and Outsider has influenced the makeup of both contemporary art production and art collecting in Chicago and internationally as well. Carl Hammer Gallery takes pride in the unique perspectives put forward by its artists, each daring to lay bare the essence of their existence, beliefs and individuality. They each share in the process of challenging the viewer with broad portrayals of those things that make us all human. The issues explored are an examination of the triumphs and tragedies of the human experience and of the future’s demand for change, adaptation and acceptance of all things different. 740 N. PARIS LONDON HONG KONG

WEST TOWN

Paris London Hong Kong is an evolving experimental site for international emerging and established artists. Since its inception, the gallery has grown into an important platform in Chicago for exhibitions that feature both a diverse array of artists and the varied interests of its curators. To date, PLHK has presented solid painting exhibitions, surprising site-specific installations of sculpture and objects, shows of photography and functional objects, projects that question print media and graphic production, a bookshop, and rare photos by Irving and Paula Klaw of pin-up/bondage/fetish star Bettie Page. PLHK is a space for work that continually tests the boundaries of contemporary art and does so with a healthy dose of spirit and enthusiasm. The space is modest, but the work is expansive and always challenging. All of Paris London Hong Kong’s featured artists continue to make their mark at significant venues and through important projects throughout the world. Since her 2015 installation at PLHK, Alice Tippit opened her first solo show in New York at Nicelle Beauchene Gallery, where she is now represented. The show garnered an Artforum review. Lauren Taylor showed at PLHK in January and just closed her first solo exhibition at Andrew Rafacz Gallery in Chicago. After his 2015 show Wyatt Grant completed a major site-specific installation at the Thompson Hotel in Chicago.

MUSEUM OF CONTEMPORARY ART CHICAGO (MCA)

STREETERVILLE

Since its founding in 1967, the MCA has earned a reputation for presenting groundbreaking exhibitions of work by local, national, and international artists. In 1969, Christo wrapped the museum with 8,000 square feet of tarpaulin and rope in the artist’s first building wrap. In 1978, Gordon Matta-Clark sawed through the walls and floors of the museum’s new annex, creating the first “ex-stallation” in the space. Focused on originating new shows, the MCA also became known for highlighting talent and giving emerging artists their first major exhibitions. These artists include Dan Flavin (1967), George Segal (1968), Richard Artschwager (1973), Leon Golub (1974), Frida Kahlo (1978), Kenneth Josephson (1983), Rebecca Horn (1984), Jeff Koons (1988), and Gerhard Richter (1988). Now in its 50th year, the MCA continues to offer exhibitions that are provocative, dynamic, and dedicated to the art of today.

YALE FACTOR GALLERY

BRIDGEPORT

Contemporary narrative still life paintings, landscapes and prints. Autobiographical paintings rendered in the trompe l’oeil style bring into a clear focus natural detail that is all too often only vaguely sensed. Each universe created on canvas or paper is a juxtapositon of traditional Renaissance coloring against modern almost scientific rendering. Yale Factor is one artist who tests our perceptions of reality and illusion. His work has been shown in regional, national and international juried exhibitions, as well as in one-person exhibitions in museums across the nation. Factor is a Professor Emeritus of Art at Northern Illinois University. Prior to taking the teaching position at NIU Yale Factor was a scientific illustrator at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago.

HYDE PARK

The Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago presents contemporary art exhibitions, events, and publications. Founded in 1915 by a group of faculty members, we are an independent, non-collecting museum that combines a flexible, experimental ethos with focused, rigorous inquiry. We aim to create the best possible conditions for art and artists, and our commitment to supporting ambitious artistic expression frequently takes the form of newly commissioned exhibitions. Regular events include artist talks, lectures, concerts, and readings, which present opportunities for further discovery and discussion, while our publications offer critical reflection on and documentation of the exhibitions. STONY ISLAND ARTS BANK The Stony Island Arts Bank is a hybrid gallery, media archive, library and community center – and a home for Rebuild’s archives and collections. Designed by William Gibbons Uffendell and built in 1923, the bank at 68th Street and Stony Island Avenue was once a vibrant community savings and loan. By the 1980s, the branch had closed and the building sat vacant and deteriorating for decades. Reopened in October 2015, the radically restored building serves as a space for neighborhood residents to preserve, access, reimagine and share their heritage – and a destination for artists, scholars, curators, and collectors to research and engage with South Side history. Please see our events page for more information, including details on our annual fall benefit as well as ongoing artist residencies and exhibitions.
