ON THE COVER: The Zhou B Art Center, founded in 2004 by the brothers Shan Zuo & DaHuang Zhou, is an art center located in the quaint Bridgeport neighborhood of Chicago, where the Zhou Brothers have lived for more than two decades.

The Zhou B Art Center is a private, non-government funded art center designed to facilitate the exchange of contemporary art between Chicago & the international art community.

Housing 87,000 square feet, the art center collectively forms an extravagant space, fusing culture & creativity amidst innumerable possibilities for exploring the arts in a charismatic location.

The Zhou B Art Center is Chicago’s newest art destination, presenting a vibrant mix of art galleries, studios, special event spaces, shops, & the Zhou B. Café. The eclectic Third Friday openings are enthusiastic events featuring gallery openings & open studios for artists from Chicago & abroad. The various spaces of the Zhou B Art Center are also available for special events.

Zhou B Art Center In honor of Chinese President Hu Jintao’s State Visit to the United States in January 2011, President Barack Obama presented the Chinese leader with a painting created by the Zhou Brothers. The painting Eight U.S. Presidents and the Great Wall is an original, multi-textural oil painting on canvas, measuring 86” wide x 68” high.

Based in President Obama's hometown of Chicago, IL, DaHuang & Shan Zuo Zhou are distinguished Chinese American contemporary artists known for their unique collaborative work process. Their creativity, thoughts, & aesthetics are a symbiosis of Eastern and Western philosophy.

The Zhou Brothers were on hand on January 18, 2011 for the gift exchange between the two Presidents. With White House & State Department staff huddled around, the Zhou brothers explained the significance of the painting, what the gift symbolizes, & their passion for & love of America.

News - What’s Happening Letter from the Publisher CGN has long considered itself an art world cheerleader, as we strive to enthusiastically promote all that is unique, admirable, and perhaps unknown about our galleries, museums and more. A cheerleader gives unwavering support to the home team and is there to boost morale when players need extra encouragement. CGN also aims to serve as an advocate for artists, creative entrepreneurs, and for those who are in this business out of passion.

There is a new need for individuals to support of the arts in Chicago. Changes are afoot.

Our Department of Cultural Affairs recently merged with the Mayor’s Office of Special Events, and Lois Weisberg, an advocate and a cheerleader of the arts for as long as many of us can remember, retired as Commissioner of Cultural Affairs in February at age 85.

We will miss Weisberg more than we know; she did more than most people will realize.

Weisberg stood taller than her small stature let on, but nothing was beneath her. In 2006 she became the first person to be “landmarked” by the Illinois Landmarks Preservation Council, ensuring that at least historically she will be around forever. She attended countless arts events; she backed hundreds of exhibitions and public art projects. She made big plans realities, leading the conversion of the old central library building into the headquarters for the newly created Department of Cultural Affairs in 1989, and co-founding Gallery 37 with Maggie Daley. Weisberg created physical, as well as emotional, spaces that nurtured the arts, and she put Chicago and its cultural treasures indelibly on the map.

Mayor Richard M. Daley, a civic leader recognized on an international scale, departs office in May, leaving behind possibilities as well as questions for the city. Chicago is getting a new mayor, but we may never get another Lois, so we must newly take her messages to heart. We should embrace public art, support our emerging artists, and take advantage of our first class museums and art centers. These treasures spark conversation and enrich our city; they attract visitors and boost business. I hope Mayor Emanuel gives passionate, official support to the arts as he envisions a strengthened creative community in Chicago. Because of cultural cheerleaders like Lois and art enthusiasts like our readers, CGN is inspired to do what it does each issue, and we thank you all.

Artist Insights Dawoud Bey is highly regarded for his striking portraits of teenagers in classrooms around the U.S. Now, a recent exhibition in Chicago examines the artist’s early photographs from Harlem in the 1970s. We spoke with Bey about how he started taking photographs and asked what important roles an artist can play in society.

Chicagoans know the recent work of photographer Dawoud Bey well - his striking images of high school students capture a single expression, frozen in a moment.

These portraits challenge Dawoud Bey many stereotypes about everyday youth, hopefully opening the eyes of the viewer, and give the subjects a chance to exist in the world in a lasting way. But long before Bey began taking portraits of teens across the country, he started photographing close to home, in a neighborhood he wanted to get to know - Harlem, NY. His latest exhibition in Chicago at Stephen Daiter Gallery examines these early photographs.

Eventually I wanted to have a more sustained relationship with the people I was photographing in the streets, so I started using a large format 4x5 camera mounted on a tripod. It slowed down the picture making process, resulting in something that was much more collaborative and consensual, and changed the way the pictures looked, giving them an even greater degree of material & physical description.

How do you get your subjects to open up? Is this harder or easier because they’re teenagers?

What social topics and challenges are significant to you and your work?

DB: I am interested in taking the experience and presence of ordinary people and giving them a compelling and commanding presence through my photographs. It’s really about using my work as a way to bring the human community into a conversation with itself; to use the work to create a momentary empathy between two strangers; to allow people to see some aspect of themselves through someone else. I am interested in how the camera and photographs can describe aspects of human emotional and psychological experience.

Does anything surprise you about other people’s interpretations of your work?

DB: I think that the experience for the viewer and the experience for the person making the work are always different. The viewer is free to have their own experience and opinions about the work…as long as they understand that is their experience and opinion and not mine.

You voiced strong opinions and pleas in response to the removal of David Wojnarowicz’s video, A Fire in My Belly from the National Portrait Gallery in 2010; what do you think is the art community’s role in the broader culture?

DB: I believe that artists are also citizens.

The last time I looked at my passport it didn’t say I was a citizen of someplace called Art World, it says the United States. And so as citizens I think we, as artists, need to be mindful of the ways in which we can continue to create a conversation between our work and the larger social community.

When the art community becomes isolated from the larger society, both groups suffer.

The culture wars of the ‘80s and even now are about trying to create a chasm between the art community and the broader community. None of us can afford that.

Question: I am moving to a new home. Any tips on reframing or reinstalling my artwork?

Answer: Moving or renovating is a great time to assess your artwork.

• Cleaning: In addition to external dusting and conservation, examine the back to make certain that dirt hasn’t had an opportunity to harm the art. If you have works behind glass, look carefully to see if there is any foxing or other problem affecting the piece. If so, you may want to consult a conservation expert to help you restore it before reinstallation.

• Reframing: Check for warping of the frame, and consider reframing the piece if you are not pleased with how it will look in your new home. Remember that framing isn’t 100% appearance; you want to protect the work as well. Be sure the art inside the frame isn’t up against the glass (matting or using a spacer will solve that); and ask about acid-free materials used in both backing and matting, as well as options for different types of glass.

• Environment: When choosing a new location for artwork, avoid areas with extremes of humidity or direct sunlight.

Don’t be concerned if your work on paper wrinkles a little at first. It may need to adjust to the new atmosphere.

• Reinstallation: Many people hang artwork too high or at different levels.

Unless the piece is going above a piece of furniture, fireplace or on a stairway, hang it so that the center point is at eye level. I like 57” – some people prefer 55” to 59” – but pick a number and be consistent. Even if you have a group of works, the center point of the grouping should be eyelevel as well (look online for step-bystep instructions on measuring.) Use appropriate hooks for the weight of each piece, and two hooks for each one. Even small works will be more stable if you do.

Collector Conversations Are some people biologically drawn to art? Having nurtured a collection since 1988, Dr. Daniel S. Berger thinks so. Writer Alica Eler visited Dr. Berger’s home, and the two discussed how a collection’s theme takes shape, how art adds balance to a stressful life, and how this collector is inspired by the challenges many artists face.

“I believe there is an art gene,” says Dr. Dan Berger, as we lounge in his kitchen.

Dan laughs, explaining that he means it as a way “to help distinguish people who understand and are very interested in art, compared with a broader audience of those who hold little interest, or are incapable of finding their way around a museum.” It’s 9pm and Dan is sipping a cup of coffee he’s flavored with a tablespoon of Cool Whip. We’ve just strolled through his collection, which covers the walls and floors of his North Side home.

It focuses on a medley of areas: work by Queer artists, art about African-American identity, work by outsider artists, as well as Chicagoans. The names are familiar Rashid Johnson, Elizabeth Murray, Angel Otero, Kerry James Marshall, Stan Shellabarger and Dutes Miller, and Doug Ischar - all are in good company amongst works by cornerstone contemporary artists like Nan Goldin and Robert Mapplethorpe.

The second piece I bought was by Ed Paschke—also didn’t have the money for that. I appreciated that both Warhol and Paschke created surprising work. Warhol wasn’t afraid to idolize anything—everyday American objects, and electric chairs.

Paschke’s bold character depictions, especially in his early work, were crazy shocking. The gallery [that sold me the Paschke] sent me notes, writing “send us a check, please Dan!” They underlined “please Dan.” [laughs] I hoped living with art would help me attain some balance in my life.

Once I became a medical doctor with earnings, I started regularly buying art.

ALICIA: Why does your collection focus on Queerness, African American identity, outsider artists, and Chicago artists?

DAN: I buy what I am truly interested in, what speaks to me. I don’t buy for investment. A collection’s focus doesn’t happen in a moment’s notice, but instead derives from reflection, consideration, deliberation and conscious as well as subconscious thought. I’m carefree and uninhibited when asking artists questions, and I like having open discussions with gallery owners, curators and art educators.

The fierceness of many Queer artists and many African American artists runs parallel to my own work. More than 20 years ago, whenever I would tell other doctors that I specialized in AIDS, it was not uncommon to encounter raised eyebrows and a kind of sneer in response. ALICIA: Tell us how you decided to open the artist project space Iceberg Projects in 2010.

DAN: I read a New York Times article 4 years ago called Welcome to the Museum of My Stuff. Some important collectors, unsatisfied with institutions and what they were showing, decided to mount their own exhibitions. One of them bought a space on a main street in his city, created a small gallery/museum, and showed what he wanted to show. I also knew that [Miami collectors] the Rubells were doing their own thing. So I thought, ‘I could do this too’—it just takes drive, energy, and a dedication to artists. I talked to my friend Robert McNeil, who is an architect, and he began measuring around the property of my home. We decided to use the architecture of an old coach house to make a unique state-of-the-art exhibition space.

The Iceberg Committee, comprised of Doug Ischar, John Neff, Dianna Frid, Robert McNeil, Zak Arctander, and myself decides what we’ll show. We’re particularly interested in giving artists outside Chicago exposure here they otherwise wouldn’t have, and bring new, challenging work to the city. DAN: When I started specializing in HIV / AIDS there was a lack of treatment for it; people were suffering and dying. It was very difficult to maintain my sanity. I spent many sleepless nights struggling to help patients, working on research for new treatments. Enjoying and appreciating art was a welcome distraction that helped me maintain intensity in my medical work.

15 Minutes with a Dealer There is a lot happening in Chicago’s suburbs; one of the most active organizations is the Northern Illinois University Art Museum in DeKalb. CGN’s Laura Miller spoke with director Jo Burke about the unique challenges and rewards of working at a University museum, as well as working closely with the community. bit too busy to work with large-scale public projects. How does the museum’s affiliation with a university impact your programming?

JB: Our mission is to contribute to NIU’s curriculum, & also to provide opportunities for art education & cultural enrichment to the community, by balancing contemporary art with traditional media for an examination of visual culture. Our affiliation impacts our philosophy – we provide a space to experiment, discover & learn, and we’re open to artists showing works that wouldn’t likely be of interest in a commercial setting (site-specific installations, collaborative workshop projects).

Our advisory committees are comprised of faculty & community members. Departments work to pool resources & expertise.

On several occasions the various university galleries & the NIU Anthropology Museum have simultaneously hosted exhibitions related to a particular culture / concept.

The museum has been around since the ‘60s and gone through its share of moves and renovations – undoubtedly creating some obstacles, as well as opportunities. The Museums without Walls program, where you placed contemporary art in the community, was a success. Any plans for reinstating it?

JB: Museum without Walls started when Altgeld Hall underwent renovation – the timing of our program with the start of DeKalb's participation in the national Main Street Program served as a catalyst for tremendous changes & improvements in our community. Today these are being made through the Renew DeKalb program, on whose committees our staff still serves.

I'm now seeing exciting efforts from the town, county, & campus to work together; I'm proud the arts have been a part of that.

We produce up to 16 shows annually in our renovated galleries, so we’ve been a

JB: Our permanent collection has approximately 1,500 items: including prints, drawings & photographs. We typically incorporate collection pieces into group exhibitions, i.e., polaroids recently given to us by the Andy Warhol Foundation were shown with 19th century tintypes as well as contemporary portraits by photographers Dawoud Bey & Nora Herting.

One practice that has helped us gain a greater community audience, but is maybe a little unusual for a museum, is using social media to find out about private collections to augment exhibitions. People have some amazing stuff they’re very proud of & happy to share.

Your exhibitions often combine the old with the new; tell us about that.

JB: To help our audience feel comfortable with contemporary art, we try to juxtapose a contemporary artist with an old master.

Someone interested in Käthe Kollwitz’s work is pleased to discover Jay Ryan’s work in the next room. Likewise, students who know Jay’s work from concert posters become engaged with the graphic work of an older hipster like David Driesbach.

How do you plan & curate exhibitions?

JB: Our staff curates, as do guest curators - artists, historians, collectors. We’re happy to view proposals from artists & curators, & we post periodic calls for proposals on our website. We seek a balance of media, local & national/international artists, & we consider how a show will serve our students & community.

How did you get involved with the Museum? What’s your favorite part about working there?

JB: I have a studio art background & worked in the audiovisual industry while doing volunteer work at arts organizations.

I first worked at the museum as a grad assistant while getting my masters in art history. I was hired as Assistant Director, with notions of staying three years, but things changed at the museum, or in my personal life, that kept it interesting & challenging. Working with creative people is always a bit of both! Being a small museum, our staff serves many functions – I guess that’s my favorite part. I’d be bored if I did the same thing every day.

What exciting plans are on the horizon?

We’re organizing our first traveling show in years – ­the last one was with Jin Soo Kim. This new show features etchings & copper plates by printmaker David Driesbach: Moonlight Cocktails are the Thing. Our original installation won an Award of Excellence from the Illinois Association of Museums, & the exhibition will be available to travel over the next three years.

In what direction would you like to see the museum head in this new decade?

I’d like for our artists & shows to get more recognition in the art field as well as for more people in the Chicago area to discover the fine work being done here. I’d like to see our collection continue to grow, but for space reasons, we try to limit ourselves to works on paper.

I’m glad to see Governor Quinn increase support for the Illinois Arts Council, but it’s difficult to know how much the state can continue to fund. When appropriate, we approach public/private funders and sponsors to help support projects. The arts need to rely on individuals stepping up to support what matters to them; likewise, we need to be certain we’re providing a crucial service. The arts are only just beginning to realize they may have to help people see how they matter - unfortunate, but true. I hope we’ve been able to show the university & community that we can be an asset.

How long does it take to put together a typical show, and what’s the most challenging part?

JB: Things get tricky when artists send unsolicited proposals. We try to interrelate shows in all four gallery spaces, but it can be a long wait before a show gets approval, Northern Illinois University Art Museum Altgeld Hall, 1st Fl., DeKalb (60115) fits our budget, our unique spaces, & our theme. RIVER NORTH A high concentration of galleries in Chicago can be found in River North—many within a block or two from the intersection of Superior & Franklin Sts. The general boundaries are: Chicago on the north; Merchandise Mart on the south; west to Orleans & east to Dearborn.
