PUBLISHER’S LETTER There is freedom in the fact that many of us don’t hold on to physical belongings like we used to. The impulse to travel light prepares us for our next spontaneous adventure, or even just life’s next surprise. When we consider life’s essentials, what do we want to take with us or pass on? Can art endure in ways other material things cannot? For the commercial art world, which in many ways depends on offering tangible work you will want to display and contemplate at home, this topic is critical. Younger generations do not buy art, or anything, the way previous ones did, and much of what holds our attention, even if for a few seconds, is on a screen. So, it makes sense that the processes of discovering and sharing art have fundamentally changed, due to the dominance of the Internet and social media, as well as an abundance of art fairs. Despite the challenges of processing an overwhelming amount of visual content on a daily basis, a collective interest in witnessing art and appreciating design, in learning history and hearing stories, and in seeking the authentic persists. Art continues to offer much to every generation. Just like an artist is compelled to create, many of us are inspired to behold what leaves an impression. Though the commercial element of art continues to evolve, perhaps art is more valuable than ever. CGN’s mission, since 1983, has been to make the art world accessible and to accurately and easily share all that is happening. The journey of discovering art is personal, and this CGN Arts Guide is your road map to encountering the art you want to see in one of the world’s most dynamic cultural centers. The Art Institute of Chicago presents the first major survey exhibition dedicated solely to the groundbreaking group of six Chicago-based artists – James Falconer, Art Green, Suellen Rocca, Gladys Nilsson, Jim Nutt and Karl Wirsum – known as the Hairy Who. Sept 1–Jan 6, 2019 artic.edu

On October 26, 1893 Marshall Field donated $1 million for the establishment of a museum to house the Columbian Exposition. 125 years, and three name changes, later, the Field Museum of Natural History remains a premier natural history museum, attracting two million visitors a year. Filter Photo is a not-for-profit 501(c)(3) organization based in Chicago, Illinois. Since 2009 Filter Photo has organized the annual Filter Photo Festival, a multi-day celebration of photography that includes workshops, lectures, exhibition receptions, artist talks, and other diverse programming. A primary component of the festival is the portfolio reviews, through which photographers are able to connect with national and international curators, gallery directors, editors, and other elite professionals. In 2015 Filter Photo opened Filter Space, a permanent gallery and project space located in Chicagoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s West Town neighborhood at 1821 West Hubbard Street. Filter Space hosts regular social, educational, and professional development activities, including exhibitions, workshops and lectures.

Kavi Gupta Gallery was established in 2002 with a focus on presenting exhibitions of international emerging and mid-career artists in all media. Currently represented artists demonstrate a strong exhibition record with museum solo shows and biennales, with works having been placed in important institutional and public collections. When Mars, the namesake studio/gallery of renowned pop artist Peter Mars, opened in 1988 in Chicago’s West Loop meatpacking district, its off-the-beaten path location was a good indicator that it carried art you weren’t likely to find in more mainstream gallery districts. Paris London Hong Kong is an evolving experimental site for international emerging and established artists. Since its inception, the gallery has grown into an important platform in Chicago for exhibitions that feature both a diverse array of artists and the varied interests of its curators. To date, PLHK has presented solid painting exhibitions, surprising site-specific installations of sculpture and objects, shows of photography and functional objects, projects that question print media and graphic production, a bookshop, and rare photos by Irving and Paula Klaw of pinup/bondage/fetish star Bettie Page. PLHK is a space for work that continually tests the boundaries of contemporary art and does so with a healthy dose of spirit and enthusiasm. The space is modest, but the work is expansive and always challenging. All of Paris London Hong Kongâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s featured artists continue to make their mark at significant venues and through important projects throughout the world. Since her 2015 installation at PLHK, Alice Tippit opened her first solo show in New York at Nicelle Beauchene Gallery, where she is now represented. The show garnered an Artforum review. Lauren Taylor showed at PLHK in January 2017 and closed her first solo exhibition at Andrew Rafacz Gallery in Chicago. After his 2015 show, Wyatt Grant completed a major site-specific installation at the Thompson Hotel in Chicago.

Since 1916, The Arts Club of Chicago has been a preeminent exhibitor of international art, a forum for established and emerging artists, and a celebrated venue for performers from around the world. For over 95 years, The Arts Club has opened its membership to artists and patrons of the arts, and its exhibitions to the public. At its inaugural meeting, the mission of the Club was defined as: “To encourage higher standards of art, maintain galleries for that purpose, and to promote the mutual acquaintance of art lovers and art workers.” The Arts Club continues to uphold this mission, offering between three and four public exhibitions per year, a permanent collection including work by many modern and contemporary masters, and a diverse calendar of programming offered to its membership and guests. Since its founding in 1967, the MCA has earned a reputation for presenting groundbreaking exhibitions of work by local, national, and international artists. In 1969, Christo wrapped the museum with 8,000 square feet of tarpaulin and rope in the artist’s first building wrap. The DuSable Museum of African American History located in the historic Hyde Park area of Chicago (57th Street and South Cottage Grove Avenue) in Washington Park unites art, history and culture. Founded in 1961 by teacher and art historian Dr. Margaret Burroughs and other leading Chicago citizens, the DuSable Museum is one of the few independent institutions of its kind in the United States. SMART MUSEUM OF ART

As the fine arts museum of the University of Chicago, the Smart Museum of Art is home to thought-provoking exhibitions and an exquisite collection of over 15,000 objects. Throughout 2018, the Smart will continue to reconfigure and re-examine its galleries and collection, opening new perspectives on beloved artists and art objects through projects like Conversations with the Collection: Building/Environments. Other exhibitions, developed in partnership with UChicago scholars and students, will explore topics like the history of perception, artistic inspiration in nineteenth-century France, and the metaphoric possibilities of abstraction. In September, South Side Stories: Rethinking Chicago Art, 1960–1980 will take a nuanced look at the cultural history of Chicago’s South Side during a momentous era of change and conflict, with a focus on artists of the Black Arts Movement. Woman Made Gallery (WMG) is a tax-exempt, not-for-profit organization founded in 1992. Its goal is to cultivate, promote and support the work of female-identified artists by providing exhibition opportunities, professional development, and public programs that invite discussion about what feminism means today. More than 8,000 women artists have exhibited their work since WMG was established. WMG welcomes the participation of people of all gender expressions and orientations. Fashion Outlets of Chicago is an award-winning, indoor shopping center home to more than 130 designer outlets, high-end amenities and an impressive contemporary art program known as THE COLLECTION: Where Art Meets Fashion.
