ON THE COVER:

David Kroll, Floras

At Zolla/Lieberman Gallery

December 17, 2010 - February 12, 2011

David Kroll’s paintings reflect a deep connection to 17th century Dutch painting as well as early American landscape painters. They present delicate vessels, precariously balanced fauna, and mysterious landscapes. As Kroll himself writes: “I paint refuges, places to go to for solace. I want my paintings to be destinations of quiet and calm. However, this world is fragile.

Selected collections include the South Bend Museum of Art, South Bend, IN; First National Bank of Chicago, Chicago, IL; Microsoft Corporation, Redmond, WA; MacArthur Corporation, Chicago, IL; The Gund Collection, Cambridge, MA, and Prudential Insurance Company, Newark, NJ.

Repertoire The elements in the foregrounds of my paintings are items carefully constructed, either by humans or animals. Yet, they are objects that are easily broken or destroyed. Birds represent messengers from the wild. They embody beauty and fragility. They are visitors that remind us of lands beyond wilderness. The distant landscapes in my paintings are remembrances of the natural past, vaguely familiar and pleasing.” Kroll’s work has been written about in The New York Times, Chicago Tribune, Art Forum, Art in America, and Art Papers, among others.

February 18-April 30 Curated by Brian Gillham, this exhibit is a survey of affects, a gamut of artists using fundamental properties of painting, drawing, ceramic, photography and other media to convey the complexities of thought and feeling located within even the simplest range of gestures in material. Participating artists include Margie Livingston, Madeline Reyna, Samantha Bittman, Sara Mast, Cheonae Kim, Rocío Rodriguez, David Lozano, Anoka Faruqee, Amy Mayfield, Josh Garber, Roxy Paine, Heidi Van Wieren, Brenden Clenaghen, Glenn Wexler and Buzz Spector.

News - What’s Happening Letter from the Publisher

As we begin 2011, we celebrate a year of learning! There are many museums and art institutions we hope you visit this winter in between your gallery hopping; please see our calendar of events, attend artist talks and discussions, and catch exhibition highlights on our art blog.

As we continue to add to CGN’s catalog of Chicago art world profiles, a diverse picture has started to form—it conveys the vibrancy, passion and dynamism of our local community of artists, dealers and collectors.

We present several stellar profiles of Chicago artists, dealers, and collectors this issue. There is much to learn from those around us, including quite a bit of Chicago art history; we are always pleased that these generous people share their stories here so that you may one day be inspired to share your own.

There’s been grumbling for years in Chicago about the state of its art criticism - the writing isn’t critical; it’s too negative; there’s not enough; there is enough but no one reads it. At the end of the day, what’s the goal and what’s the impact of writing about and promoting the visual arts? One truth is that for the general public, as well as the art world, to benefit from the uniqueness of Chicago’s creative community, individuals must pay attention on many levels and be engaged so they don’t miss what’s happening right now. It’s simple to read an interview in a magazine, but CGN tries to let readers know that there are more spontaneous conversations out there waiting to be started. I like to note the obvious topic of New Year’s resolutions for our January issue, so I want to encourage people in 2011 to speak up. Ask questions. Go on tours. Send letters to the editors of newspapers, art magazines, and websites. Leave comments and share feedback on blogs and online forums. Take note of your own thoughts; tell us whom you think CGN should interview in our art community. Our conversations continue online, since we maintain a blog on chicagogallerynews.com. The blog fits in nicely with two panel discussions we held in 2010—at Art Chicago and at the Hyde Park Art Center—about art world social networking. As there are more channels for communicating and gathering information there is also a wealth of new information and perspectives to mine and a need to keep up with new media and resources. While everyone feels vulnerable in the current economy, we can be open to new ideas, questions, and conversations. We’d rather see things continue and grow than wither and disappear, which is why we’ve asked some art world insiders to share their perspectives, as well as some history, this issue. No matter what level of artist or collector you are, or how long you’ve run your gallery or space, now is the time to see what others have to say. By talking you’ll be providing critical fuel to what can become an enduring fire. - Ginny Berg

Chicago Exhibitions to Visit This Winter The opening reception is on January 7, 5:30-7:30 pm. Zumudio will lead a gallery tour and speak about his work on February 24 at 12:15 pm. At the Chicago Cultural Center 78 E. Washington (60602) through March 27, 2011.

Dan Zamudio, Next Stop, 2008, silver gelatin print, "Toy Camera Photograph." Courtesy of the photographer.

Chicago and the Diana: Toy Camera Images by Dan Zamudio at the Cultural Center The Diana Camera was first marketed to be an inexpensive novelty gift in the 1960s, followed by the Holga, and other plastic-bodied cameras. Although production ended in the 1970s, the lo-fi, dreamy images that Diana cameras produced established a cult following among artists. The resurgence of interest in these vintage cameras has spawned a new run of the original turquoise and black design, not to mention several apps available for purchase for smartphones. Dan Zamudio, one of Diana’s many admirers, uses the “toy” camera to capture historic architectural elements around Chicago. His small, handprinted, nostalgic, black and white images look like snapshots from an aging photo album. Neon signs around the city serve as vanishing links to the past; multiple exposures impart ghostly movement. Zamudio’s layered cityscapes recall the shadowy, dramatic look of film noir from the 1940s and 1950s, offering a look at a long-gone Chicago, glimpsed again through the buildings of today. 14

Kings, Queens, and Courtiers: Art in Early Renaissance France at the Art Institute Expansion by the ambitious French kings Charles VIII and Louis XII brought Italian Renaissance art back to France in the 16th century, fusing its influence with Northern European Gothic styles. The Art Institute of Chicago brings together this unique moment of cultural and political transition through painted altarpieces, tapestries, manuscripts, monumental sculpture, stained glass windows, portrait medals and exquisite goldsmithing. Much of the art, produced for the kings, reflects issues of royal patronage and divine devotion. The exhibit's accompanying catalog will be the first full examination of the subject in English. Jean Hey. The Annunciation, 1490/95. Mr. & Mrs. Martin A. Ryerson Collection.

At the Art Institute of Chicago 111 S. Michigan (60603) Regenstein Hall February 27–May 30, 2011

Artist Insights CGN spent some time talking with Karl Wirsum about his long career as a Chicago artist and as a member of the famous Hairy Who artist group from the 1960s. He shared what sparked his artistic interest as a child, the multiple influences on his work throughout his life, and the advantages of looking forward, not back. Wirsum became a member of the wild-child group the Hairy Who in the 1960s, after graduating from The School of the Art Institute in 1961. He reflects that within the group of artists, whose names we still recognize today, each had their own endeavors to pursue, but together they brainstormed, installed works, designed and produced catalogues–the relationship was truly collaborative. How the Hairy Who got its quizzical name is a long story, according to Wirsum. Humor plays a prominent role in Wirsum’s work. Viewers see figures that have exaggerated, comic-like features, neon colors, and loud personalities in world of wonder and imagination; aggressive lines and whimsical shapes disrupt any surrounding seriousness. Wirsum’s creative perspective may emanate from a darker place, but he explains that in his art he turns ideas around and presents them with a humorous note. He doesn’t use humor for humor’s sake, instead he takes something common, like a jack-o-lantern and tries to achieve a certain gaiety in his representation, while also playing up its strange associations. Wirsum has had relationships with two galleries in all this time. He exhibited at Phyllis Kind Gallery for years and then in 1998 he began showing with Jean Albano Gallery in River North. Of working with Jean, Wirsum says, “She has a high level of integrity, and she’s worked hard on my behalf. Overall, between galleries and artists, it’s all about human relationships.” Wirsum’s enthusiasm for his work has not diminished over time, but he also doesn’t put stock in looking back. "I do not dwell on self-reflection. I prefer to look forward.” He says his approach to his work has been a "continuum of refinement" rather than a search for breakthrough moments. Though he likes to collaborate, he ultimately prefers to work alone. Wirsum explains he knows his time is limited, and he wants to make the most of it.

Jim Nutt back at the MCA The Museum of Contemporary Art’s relationship with Jim Nutt goes back to 1967 when the MCA featured the artist’s work as part of its first exhibition. We interviewed MCA curator Lynne Warren about Jim Nutt: Coming Into Character, taking place this winter at the museum.

Since emerging in the mid-1960s, Jim Nutt and the Hairy Who group have come to represent a style that is uniquely Chicago. This winter the MCA presents Nutt’s first major survey of art in more than a decade, and fittingly, this show comes at a time when the Hairy Who and other artists now known as the Chicago Imagists are being historicized as a significant movement in 20th century art history. What are some classic inspirations for Nutt’s work, as well as sources of which the public may not be aware? Lynne Warren: Jim Nutt first showed in the mid-1960s in Chicago; he was a founding member of the Hairy Who, a group of six School of the Art Institute grads. His early work was painted on the reverse of Plexiglas using clear, bright color.

Ask Natalie Question: Does art make a good gift? Answer: Unless you really know the person’s taste, interests, or have a special clue – art can be a difficult (and often expensive) gift. However, there are several occasions where art can be a wonderful gift!

generally paints as well–this type of “artist frame” is a long-time characteristic of Nutt’s work. Nutt has had exhibitions in Chicago, as well as around the world for years; what will visitors to the MCA see for the first time in Coming Into Character? LW: Nutt hasn’t had any exhibitions recently in Chicago. The last solo exhibition here was at the MCA in 1999. His most recent Chicago gallery exhibition was in 1991 at Phyllis Kind, which has been closed for many years now. Most visitors to the MCA will have never seen the work of the past twenty or so years, the female heads, in person.

The subject matter of this work ranged from high-spirited to objectionable to downright disturbing, focusing on distorted bodies and various bodily functions, festooned with visual gags, offcolor puns and other word play. Children. Parents or grandparents can help build a wonderful art collection for children by giving them a work of art for each birthday. Although for the first few years, artwork probably will be chosen for the child, in subsequent years the young birthday boy or girl can get involved in the selection of their artwork - building their appreciation of art as well as the collection. By age 21, he/she will have a substantial legacy, and a love of art. Bridal Registry. An engaged couple can let friends and family know that they have picked out a work of art at a favorite gallery. Wedding guests can buy a portion of the piece – and participate in the purchase of a very lasting gift they can visit at the couple’s home for years to come. Wedding Anniversary. I know some couples who select a work together as an anniversary gift for themselves. Rather than choosing separate gifts, they renew their “togetherness” each year with an artful celebration. Corporate Gift. Art can be a perfect “welcome to Chicago” present or farewell / retirement remembrance for colleagues and clients. It works especially well if the work of art is by a Chicago artist, or the subject of the piece celebrates the city or special interest of the recipient. Gift Certificates/Memberships. For a less expensive gift for your favorite art lovers, consider a gift certificate at a gallery they regularly frequent, a museum or collector group membership, or perhaps a gift subscription and private gallery tour from Chicago Gallery News! V.I.P. Don’t forget yourself. You deserve something for your own big birthday, promotion, or special occasion.

15 Minutes with a Dealer Art dealer Thomas Masters spoke to Sidney Block and Bob Hiebert, the two friends behind Printworks, a 30 year-old Chicago institution specializing in works on paper. The pair described challenges they encountered when starting out, what it’s like to work with an unparalleled list of artists and friends, and the surprises and fun that have all been a part of the past three decades in Chicago’s art community. Golub, Nancy Spero, Philip Pearlstein, Jim Nutt, Gladys Nilsson, Ellen Lanyon, Roland Ginzel, Tony Tasset, Judy Ledger-wood, John Henry, Nicole Hollander and Robert Lostutter among many, many others. It’s hard to believe that the project was kept completely secret from me during the 14 months of its creation. The Exquisite Snake was finally unveiled at Jean Albano Gallery on December 16, 2003 (the exact date of my 80th birthday). Channel 11 (WTTW) even had their cameras rolling that evening. Subsequently the snake made a 6-week appearance at Gallery 37, then spent a month at the Columbia College Center for Book & Paper Arts, and finally it went to the Block Museum at Northwestern University. Hanna and I knew we could never show it properly in our condo and felt it needed to have a home in the area where it could be seen occasionally and used as an educational tool; so we gave it to the Block Museum (no relation) for their permanent collection. How have you celebrated the 30th anniversary of the gallery? Our 30th anniversary is a large group exhibition, Art of the Book The gallery has been around forever. prison. In order to escape she turned herself into a butterfly and was captured by Napoleon who was a butterfly collector (who knew?) Later they became lovers and she gave birth to a cat. (For the end of this story you will have to come to the gallery.) We wondered, who was this extraordinary printmaker, with a dark, vivid imagination, who typeset and handbound her books? We invited Audrey to the gallery and were so sufficiently impressed that we immediately offered her a show, and as they say, “the rest is history.” We had at least 9 solo shows for her before she wrote The Time Traveler’s Wife. Many people are pleasantly surprised to discover that she is a wonderful artist, as well as a fine author.

Why should beginning collectors pay attention to prints? Prints are wonderful for the beginning collector mainly because of their affordability. However, we also have a number of clients who collect only prints. With some exceptions, most of our artists do their own printing in their studios and produce the work in relatively small editions. There is something quite wonderful about this as each impression is slightly different from the next and not cookie cutter exact. Sidney, you had a particularly arty celebration a few years ago for your 80th birthday. Can you tell us about the party, the project and some of the artists involved? My 80th birthday celebration is certainly something I’ll always remember. My business partner (Bob) enlisted the help of almost 200 artists to make a gigantic work of art in the form of a snake. The idea was obviously inspired by the Exquisite Corpse [created by the Surrealists, involving the collaboration of many different artists] but in the form of the snake, so that it could be expanded as artists joined the project. Jules Feiffer created the head of the snake; Ed Paschke made the tail. The other artists were sent one of three different templates that comprised the snake’s body. Participating artists included Leon

Any words of advice for younger dealers? Advice for younger dealers? We hardly know where to start. Running a gallery is a lot harder than it looks. Be prepared for a roller coaster ride — many lows and many highs. Be passionate about what you show and most important, treat all customers and artists with respect, because without them you have nothing.

Tony Fitzpatrick’s New Gig: Firecat Projects He’s Chicago’s own–he writes, draws, paints, acts, mentors and opines–now Tony Fitzpatrick is taking a few more artists under his wing in a gallery where his studio used to be. He talked to CGN’s Laura Miller about opening Firecat Projects with business partner Stan Klein, and what he hopes will come next. all the artists exhibited will have solo shows. They’re all artists that Klein and Fitzpatrick have always thought should be shown in a gallery. Firecat is proud of and excited about the engaging work they will be able to publicly share with the community, in some cases for the first time. Exhibitions will change monthly. The December 2010 exhibition continues into January, and it features the work of Randy Regier. A resident of Maine, Regier creates provocative sculptural pieces that resemble seemingly familiar children’s toys, but upon closer inspection they reveal deeper, conceptual connotations. In February, an exhibition by New York artist Jenny Scobel will feature mixed media portraits; in March Chicago’s Duncan Anderson will exhibit his drawings and sculptures - works that often exude humor, sadness and sarcasm.

school graduates, and established galleries that have operated for years and worked with some of the most recognizable artists of the past and present. Fitzpatrick has had his own thoughts about dealers and galleries for many years, and those who know him, know he is not shy about sharing his point of view. Firecat will allow his voice, and the voices of the exhibiting artists, to be heard in a more formal way.

Tony Fitzpatrick, The Winter Tiger, drawing-collage, 2010

Many Chicagoans have passed by Tony Fitzpatrick’s North Damen studio in Bucktown – an area that has changed considerably during the 17 years he worked there. Passersby used to look in through large front windows and see work stations full of tools, paints, and bits and pieces of found objects intended for his iconic, mixed-media collages. Posters and art lined the walls; several large flat files were filled with Fitzpatrick’s etchings –the place looked like something in between a very cool office and a cozy living room. As of November 2010, the 1,900 square foot workspace known as Big Cat Press, which formerly functioned as Fitzpatrick’s studio, was converted to a new commercial gallery operation called Firecat Projects. Firecat Projects kicked off its inaugural exhibition last fall, featuring recent work by Fitzpatrick in a show called The Night Parade. Fitzpatrick called the show “a way of saying goodbye” to the space he worked in for so many years. He will continue to produce work out of his home studio, but in the future he will no longer work so publicly on his art. Fitzpatrick and his long-standing business partner, Stan Klein, have exhibitions lined up through 2011 at Firecat featuring artists from all over the country, as well as a few Chicagoans. Klein runs the exhibition space as well as the publishing business at Firecat, and says the work they’ll feature will vary in media, and

Firecat operates under an alternate model from conventional gallery standards: the gallery remains a for-profit entity, but exhibiting artists will fully profit from sales – there is no dealer commission, a highly unusual arrangement in the traditional gallery system. Fitzpatrick and Klein say their goal with this concept is to take the middleman out of the art-selling equation, empower their exhibiting artists by doing so, and perhaps create a new model for what the gallery and the artist can accomplish. Ideally, potential collectors will benefit from deeper, more direct contact with the artists producing the work, since artists will be expected to be involved in sales. Firecat will produce promotional materials, prints, posters, and will host opening receptions for new exhibitions. As Fitzpatrick puts it Firecat “will be selling popcorn at a movie theater” and “will be a non-commission, for-profit business,” and the artists and their work will be the main attraction. This gallery model will undoubtedly ignite new conversations and debates. This unconventional concept, like its creator, stands apart from the norm, which is why Fitzpatrick wanted to do it. Chicago’s diverse art community is comprised of many different personalities, levels, and missions, so there is hopefully a great deal of room for new ideas and messages. Firecat could be the kind of gallery model that fits in well in Chicago, it could occupy a space between the various alternative spaces run by recent art

Fitzpatrick has established a reputation as a strong, gritty, and prolific Chicago artist who is devoted to his city and to the artists he mentors. As a writer, actor and visual artist, his work has been featured in exhibitions and collections nationwide. He currently has plans for an upcoming theater performance titled Stations Lost, a follow-up to This Train, a play he wrote and performed last year at The 16th Street Theatre in Berwyn and at the Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago. Stations Lost will be a continuum, answering questions about the concept of “home” and who we are as Americans in the world, as well as including touching and humorous bits of personal history and stories from the artist. A new book of Fitzpatrick’s work including excerpts, poetry and art featured in the performances is available at Firecat, along with many other printed materials and artwork.

Collector Conversations Writer Alicia Eler spent some time getting to know collectors Curt and Jennifer Conklin, their 3-year-old daughter Claudi, and of course their expansive art collection. The young couple discussed who caught the art bug first, and what they’re most interested in collecting now. Now, I feel like I’m going back to what interested me about art from the start - the quality of the line. But if you look at our collection, in general you will find all of the pieces are beautiful objects with either a conceptual or humorous foundation. Scott Stack, Di

At Curt and Jennifer Conklin’s Wicker Park home, art reigns. As I walk in, I am greeted by Scott Stack’s Di, 2005, a large-scale green-tinted highway scene on two panels. It hangs across from three photographs by Tamar Halpern, entitled Loneliness, Florida, and Venus (all 2008), photos that look like layers of colors and shapes splintered with shards of light. In the kitchen and the living room we find the collection of works on paper, the couples’ newest endeavor. With more than 100 pieces in a collection that spans all media—drawing, painting, photography and video—Curt and Jennifer boast an impressive array of art, including works by Laura Letinsky, David Shrigley, Kehinde Wiley, Peregrine Honig, Saul Chernick, Marcel Dzama, Howard Fonda, Catherine Opie and Cat Chow, just to name a few.

What first interested you in collecting? Curt: My mother was a crafter and we did regional craft fairs from when I was a baby to the time I left home, so I was always exposed to the idea of purchasing objects made by other people. I started buying bigger, more expensive pieces when I had a home and actually had walls to fill and a desire to communicate an aesthetic. That was 10 years ago, right around when Jennifer and I met, in 1999. So do you two collect together? Jennifer: Collecting was more of a passion of his, and more of a learning experience for me the first few years. Curt: I didn’t have much knowledge— she just thought I did. [Laughs] Jennifer: You faked it well. [Laughs] Curt: I think that I know a fairly small amount, and I use that as my starting point. I don’t have a background in art history, though I took a lot of fine art in college. I learned a lot of formal things, my drawing skills were honed, but that doesn’t really come into play. I consider myself learning every single time I encounter a work of art. Jennifer: Every piece in the house is part of Curt and me—it’s like the clothes we wear. They change and shift as we do; it’s very personal. The pieces we connect with are the ones that we tend to collect. For me, it begins as a visceral and visual experience, and then it becomes personal; something develops a story.

Over sixty artists have recently flocked to one of the few remaining Chicago buildings designed specifically for working artists.

The Fine Arts Building, an historic artists’ haven since 1898, continues to draw local inspiration. The National Landmark’s motto, “All passes - Art alone endures” permeates the halls.

Bronze case elevator doors and ornate clocks are among the building’s original features. Murals painted by resident artists in the early twentieth century still circle the tenth floor atrium. A Venetian courtyard garden can be viewed from many artist’s studios.

These artists have been vastly under appreciated during their lifetime are now avidly sought by collectors. We also delight in exploring the earlier European traditions of English and Continental paintings, including contemporary Russian post-impressionists, mid-20th century French and German modernists, and 19th century romantic landscapists. Even an occasional Old Master has hung on our walls!

The Winnetka gallery, opened in 1990, is the third reincarnation of Kamp Gallery. We pride ourselves on the continuation of professional standards in the conversation, framing, and selling of quality works of art. This February, Kamp Gallery is pleased to sponsor the first two of a three-part lecture series titled Search & Restitution of “Nazi” Art by Ruth Ann Kalish, PhD. The first lecture, Untold Crimes of the Holocaust; What Six Million Left Behind, will begin Wednesday, February 16th at 6:30pm, at the Winnetka location; please RSVP. Refreshments will be served prior to talk. The second lecture will follow the next Wednesday, February 23rd, also at 6:30 pm.
