ON THE COVER The Road Not Taken: Carl Hammer Gallery - 30 Years Later Life’s landmarks have a funny way of sneaking up on a person. At the time when Carl Hammer Gallery opened at 620 N. Michigan Avenue, back in 1979, there was not an inkling of the kind of experiences which lay ahead. Looking back, the vision the gallery had then still propels a significant part of its program direction today. In 1979, the solitary focus of the gallery was to present the very best examples of American folk and “outsider” art to a public which had little knowledge of or appreciation for such material. Having become one of the major world-wide pioneers of the “outsider” genre, the gallery added “conventional” artists to its stable, and the stimulating dialogue between the two genres began to take shape. An integrated, unique blending of artists, their visions and their different backgrounds, helped the gallery attain an inimitable niche among the world’s art community.

Coupled with its distinctive vision was the gallery’s association with the artists themselves, the best of both ends of the self-taught and academically trained continuum. Their influence has been most instrumental in helping create this gallery’s significance. From the remarkable Bill Traylor, an ex-slave and share cropper farmer, to Chicagoans Henry Darger and Joseph Yoakum, to the legendary likes of Don Baum, Phyllis Bramson, David Sharpe, Chris Ware, Mary Lou Zelazny and others, Carl Hammer Gallery has been blessed by a day to day exposure to their wonderment and interpretation of the world around us. One’s faith in the future of this planet will most certainly be enhanced by the inspired, creative insightfulness of its artist community. Carl Hammer

To the support and encouragement given by Chicago and collectors world-wide, Carl Hammer Gallery thanks you.

News - What’s Happening Letter from the Publisher Writing the “Letter from the Publisher” always seems like the most daunting part of putting a new issue together – at least it’s the thing I leave until the very last minute. I wait because, when the magazine is about to go to press, I can look back at the past few months of planning as well as towards the season ahead. Planning for our spring / summer issue practically starts at the beginning of the year, and as we near its end and welcome our fall issue, so much has changed. Chicago Gallery News has been on Twitter @ChiGalleryNews for several months now, and writing updates in 140 characters has become a new norm. Perhaps that’s why I’ve procrastinated writing a 500-word letter even longer this time around. It’s harder and harder to pay attention to one thing at a time these days. In addition to regularly Tweeting, we have a CGN Facebook group. We’re also blogging and making weekly art event recommendations for TheChiGuide.com. All of these endeavors are efforts to make dynamic connections with more and more people on behalf of Chicago’s galleries, artists, studios, spaces, and institutions. Providing a steady stream of news and updates to our online followers keeps us busy. As we add content to the website every day, we become even more aware of how much is happening in our art scene. We’re also tracking news happening in the global art community, linking to national articles and industry updates, while keeping in touch with other art world figures and players. I guess if Chicago Gallery News has a “2.0,” this is it. Even though budgets are being carefully minded across the board, and the pace of galleries expanding or arriving on the scene has been very slow in 2009, the myriad ways of promoting an ever-growing line-up of events, artist talks, panel discussions, tours and neighborhood walks continue to expand. As a result, from now until the end of the year, our calendars will be full. We have international art fairs coming to town again: SOFA; the Merchandise Mart Antiques Fair; the Winnetka Modernism Show. Festive fall galas and fundraisers are opportunities to support institutions like the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Hyde Park Art Center, and the Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago. Not to mention we also have an entire month of programs devoted to Chicago artists in October. So, after all that time in front of the computer this year, we’re going to get outside while we can this fall. We’ll visit people and places we haven’t seen in awhile. We’ll enjoy the weather, gallery openings and walks, the changes of the season, and the changes in the art world.

Galleries have a back to school season like everyone else, and the first day of fall is Friday, September 11, the long-awaited opening night that punctuates the end of summer and kick starts fall’s flurry of activity in Chicago. We welcome many new exhibitions and events throughout the season, and our calendar is full of opportunities to enjoy local art programs. In this issue, we’ve highlighted a few not-to-miss celebrations, fairs, galas & art benefits for you - some great occasions to support your favorite institutions before the close of 2009. Chicago Gallery News continues to add features to our print content in the magazine, while keeping up with changes in the way we communicate with the art world online. In this issue, art critic Alicia Eler talks to a young collector couple about living with art. And gallery owner William Lieberman shares history and stories that makes us appreciate the strength and resilience of our unique community. If that’s not enough, Readers may follow us on Twitter & Facebook for daily updates about openings & events, as well as news from around the world. Happy fall, enjoy the galleries, & stay in touch!

SOFA 2009 • SOLO at SOFA New to Sculpture Objects and Functional Art (SOFA) this year are focused, curatorial projects. SOLO at SOFA is a special show floor section devoted to one-person SOLO shows presented by exhibiting galleries. In recent years, many major fairs have noted the appeal of individually curated exhibitions within larger shows, in an effort to breakup the overwhelming scenario of 100+ booths Salvador, Walking on a Dream, 2009, glass mosaic, under one roof. Bringing project spaces to a Andrea 51.2” x 42.5”, Represented at SOFA CHICAGO by Berengo large fair better showcases young, emerging Fine Arts, Venice, Italy talent & brings some uniqueness and edge to the show. According to SOFA’s founder, Mark Lyman, “SOLO at SOFA is a plan to present installations by individual artists outside of the structure of the representing gallery’s exhibit booth. We will see new works that explore both individual object & object groupings. We hope to see work that presents new emerging concepts & vision.” SOFA runs November 6-8, at Navy Pier • Visit www.sofaexpo.com for details.

• Shuttle Returns & Openings Take Place November 6 Transportation to & from Navy Pier is tricky, so CGN helps by coordinating free, continuous shuttles to & from the show & the River North Galleries all weekend. The shuttles will take you to the district for many opening receptions on in River North on November 6, as well as for special hours on Saturday & Sunday. Regular stops are the MCA on Chicago Ave., the corner of Superior & Franklin in River North, & Navy Pier.

You’re Invited to a Quinceañera This fall, coinciding with National Latino Heritage Month and Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebrations, Columbia College presents Layer Cake: Tales from a Quinceañera - an exploration of the tension, delight, embarrassment, desire, joy, pride, confusion and beauty inherent in the Quinceañera. The Quinceañera, like Debutante Balls and "coming out" rituals that many young girls around the world participate in, is uniquely Latino, and it is one of the most important days in a young girl’s life. The exhibition seeks to gather artists who can capture this fantastic confusion through personal engagement - artists who can make transparent the layers of the poufy dress, the many-tiered cake, and the pomp and circumstance to reveal the truths beneath. The public is invited to be personally engaged by submitting their own Quinceañera photos to make the exhibit feel like a party everyone is invited to. September 8 - October 28 Attend the September 15 reception and enjoy Quince cake & Mexican food. Columbia College, C33 Gallery, 33 E. Congress www.colum.edu

Chicago Artists Month 2.0 Chicago Artists Month, the annual celebration presented by the City of Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs, marks its 14th anniversary this October. By now, CAM is a familiarly significant part of our fall art season, offering over 200 venues to visit and programs to attend – exhibitions, open studio tours, neighborhood art walks and more. Tours & talks take place all year – Chicago Gallery News is constantly adding to our online calendar – but a lot of credit for the abundance of 2009 Chicago Artist Month featured artist, Barbara Hashimoto, Junk Mail Landscape, Installation. events we now Photo credit: Archie FlorCruz regularly enjoy goes back to the initial goal of CAM - to better acquaint the public with Chicago's artists & to raise awareness of the quality & depth of our visual arts community. This year’s theme, “Web 2.0”, explores interactivity & connectivity in relation to artists and their audiences. Communication & information is non-stop because of technology & the online world and the explosion of social networking. CAM 2.0 highlights the ways in which artists interact with their audiences, interface with other artists, & use technology to create & distribute their work - locally, globally and virtually. We’re all becoming very familiar with (read: hooked on) Facebook, Twitter, Flickr. Social networking lets us at least try to virtually keep up with as many artists, critics, freelance writers and bloggers as we can manage. We can instantly see what’s new, put faces to names, and give and receive feedback. As usual, when something is based around technology and information is updated around the clock, there is a great deal to keep up with and process. So this year, CAM is working in conjunction with the City’s art website, Chicagoartistsresource.org (CAR) to post its calendar of events instead of producing a printed program. Motivating so many to engage the public with the art world for a month has succeeded in spilling over to the rest of the year; now every month can be Artists Month.

CGN Social Networking CGN is in on the social networking game now, doing much of the legwork for you. Keep up with us, and the rest of the art world, in several different ways. • On Twitter: follow us @ChiGalleryNews. We’re adding dozens of followers daily and we send out art world news as well as updates on gallery openings and special events like tours and artist talks. • On Facebook: join the Chicago Gallery News group. Contribute to discussion boards and post your own links and feedback. We also send out reminders and invitations to events and openings. • The ChiGuide.com: CGN has been contributing to the Arts & Culture section of this site since January. We blog each week and post area art event picks. • Favorite Blogs and Links: We’ve posted a comprehensive (but always growing) list of favorite art blogs, website and links. This should be your go-to page for local & national art news resources.

15 Minutes with a Dealer Gallery owner Thomas Masters conducted an interview with dealer William Lieberman of Zolla/Lieberman Gallery about the history of one of Chicago’s oldest galleries, the importance of loyalty, and how he never gets tired of his job. How has Chicago’s art scene most dramatically changed since Z/L opened? Zolla/Lieberman Gallery opened over 33 years ago, and for us, the biggest change has been the evolving impact of digital technology. We have also seen Chicago’s gallery districts de-centralize since our early pioneering presence in River North. Art Chicago, which was the preeminent art fair during the ‘80s, brought a flood of international attention to the city and River North galleries. Gradually, the fair shifted toward a national focus and faced competition from venues like Basel Miami and the Armory Show in New York. Fortunately, Chicago’s art institutions, both large and small, William Lieberman stands next to a work at home counterbalance these changes with releby gallery artist John Buck vant and stimulating programs. Suburban colleges and community centers have developed exhibition spaces, which offer valuable opportunities outside of the city to engage with contemporary artwork. Additionally, the massive changes to the art scene globally, which are too numerous to discuss here, have affected Chicago like everywhere else. What sums up the gallery’s current focus? How has the direction evolved? In the gallery’s first show, in March 1976, we exhibited work of such well-known artists as Andy Warhol, Robert Morris, Frank Stella, Carl Andre, and other artists represented by Leo Castelli. The gallery’s second show was a solo exhibition by James Rosenquist. Roberta Lieberman and Bob Zolla shifted their focus after that and began selecting artists that fit the aesthetic and financial interests of a young gallery and local collectors. Suggestions from gallery artists, curators and critics led to studio visits, and the third show featured the work of a professor from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, Deborah Butterfield. We also began representing artists like Deborah Remington, Michelle Stuart and Loren Madsen. The gallery moved into a larger, 9,500 square foot space in 1980. Artists working with us, including John Buck and Deborah Butterfield, were receiving national attention. The growth of Art Chicago also helped us as we began exhibiting more well-known and even international artists, Chema Cobo, for example, in addition to important Chicago artists like Susanne Doremus or Tom Czarnopys. On April 15, 1989, the gallery burned to the ground in the huge River North fire, but the loyalty and support of the Chicago art community helped us to persevere. We moved to our current space on Huron and began exhibiting both more conceptually-based work from artists like Buzz Spector or Erika Rothenberg, and an emerging generation of more figurative painters like Maria Tomasula and landscape artists like David Kroll. We also maintained our commitment to contemporary sculpture, such as that by Jin Soo Kim or Stephen De Staebler. We are proud to continue showing nationally recognized artists, and we participated in the 30th year of Art Chicago this spring. It is also still important to us that we offer exhibition opportunities to young, experimental artists, most recently with Rachel and Brian’s (members of the Zolla/Lieberman staff) summer curatorial project, Second Stories: Artists Making Do & Fixing Up. Those who know you well know you have a lot of energy. After all these years, how do you avoid wearing yourself out or losing interest in this business? I am invigorated by the meaningful relationships I have with Zolla/Lieberman’s artists and collectors, and by living with my own art collection and sharing it with friends. I’m always visiting studios, museums and other galleries, both locally and during my travels, which keeps my vision evolving and informed. Being trained as a studio potter gives me a separate creative outlet. I also swim 2,000-3,000 yards every week. Most importantly, I strive to build upon the legacy established by my late mother, Roberta Lieberman. Collector Conversations Chicago Gallery News continues its series focusing on the collector. For this issue, Art critic Alicia Eler spent some time talking with young collectors, and new parents, Khloe Karova & Jeff Young about the personal experience of collecting art. While I was sitting in Khloe and Jeff’s Humboldt Park living room, my eyes wandered from Carrie Schneider’s Untitled (Library)—an unnerving photograph of the artist standing uncomfortably close to her brother at a library—to Nathan Redwood’s giant painting of a gnarly, twisted ship fighting the ocean. Nearby, Coco, the couple’s first child, alternately napped and cooed from her baby swing. Khloe, who studied art history at Northwestern and received her MBA from University of Chicago, and Jeff, a flash developer with a BA from Columbia College, are Chicagoans whose collection reflects both the city’s gallery scene and the plethora of emerging talent. What’s the thematic or ideological focus of your collection? Khloe: A couple years ago, I made an attempt at creating some sort of theme and being very deliberate in what to collect. I decided okay, I want oil and canvas—I’m just going to collect paintings. Or I wanted still-lifes, or something abstract. Everything I’ve bought has nothing to do with that original agenda. If I were to impose a theme, it would be mostly Chicago artists who have received an MFA or BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC). The first work in your collection that I recognized was Carrie Schneider’s Untitled (Library) from her 2006-2007 Derelict Self series. How did you discover this piece? Jeff: We saw Carrie’s work at Art Chicago. I noticed the work, & then the next day Khloe mentioned that she was looking at work by this artist, Carrie Schneider, who works with images of her with her brother. I knew right away that we were talking about the same artist. Carrie Schneider's Untitled (Library) Clearly her work made an impression from her 2006-2007 Derelict Self series on us—we both have one other sibling, though I’m a little closer in age to my brother than Khloe is. When I first looked at the work, I didn’t even realize that they were brother & sister—these two people are standing really close to each other. She’s obviously saying something about her relationship to this person, to a man, and when you find out they’re siblings, you’re surprised. Are there any artists you collect whose work strongly recalls certain periods in art history? Khloe: Nathan Redwood. He’s a painterly artist, and formally he’s very skilled. He has a sense of perspective that’s almost like a Van Gogh, but there’s also a sort of raised up perspective that you’d get in a Mary Cassatt, so in some ways it defaults into Impressionist or post-Impressionist. Formally, it’s interesting, and easy to digest. Technically speaking, he’s a painter who is very much about materials and experimenting with paint. You can touch his canvases and everything is perfectly smooth. I thought, here’s someone who is so into his art that he is trying to devise new materials for his working. As a collector, you definitely want to buy someone who has some staying power and who is committed to the work. After meeting the artist, I felt like his paintings strongly convey a sense of who he is. Nathan’s a trained carpenter. I get that sense in his work, of construction, deconstruction, tearing things apart and putting them back together in a different way.

I noticed you two have mostly painting, drawing, photography and sculpture in your collection. What are your thoughts on video art? Jeff: I would say I’m kind of warming up to it, and I’ve gained a lot more tolerance for it. As I see it, the problem is that you could easily upload any video art to YouTube. The video pieces I really respond to are more in part three-dimensional—not so much the straight video. One of the coolest video installation pieces I remember is one in which the artist laid a bunch of books down on the floor, arranged fans to blow the pages of the books and then projected video onto the books. I really enjoyed this interplay between the material and the video. Do you have a strategy for scouting & collecting art? Khloe: I don’t want to say it’s impulsive, but we’ll go to fairs or gallery openings, and there’s a chance we’ll buy something. I think it’s more of an adventure. We don’t know if we’re going to buy something. But maybe the artist will be there, and perhaps after getting to know the artist we’ll take a second look.

3rd Fridays Tell me about work you own by Su-en Wong, another SAIC MFA graduate. Khloe: I saw myself in Su-en Wong’s piece, Recess (2007) —those little Asian girls in their Catholic schoolgirl uniforms. There’s a sort of autoerotic aspect to it, and this is the only artist Khloe and Jeff at home with Su-en Wong's Recess I know of who is going to create that response in me. I first saw her work at Danese Gallery in New York. I wanted it and I regretted not buying it. I thought okay, I’ve got to commit to that, and I lived with that for years. Then I saw her at Art Chicago—Zolla/Lieberman was also representing her. Jeff: That was the quickest sale, I think, in history. Literally, Khloe saw it and was like I want that. The gallery assistant said okay. We bought it and walked away. 18

20th Anniversary of the River North Fire On April 15, 1989, a ravaging fire changed a pioneer art district. On April 15, 1989, fire engulfed an entire city block at the corner of Huron & Orleans in River North, leveling an anchor gallery building & halting a great deal of momentum that had fueled the establishment of Chicago’s art community less than a decade after the emergence of the area as a gallery district.

Ask Natalie Question: Where can I find work by up-and-coming Chicago artists?

Of the nine galleries lost in the fire, seven proved their resiliency & passion by reopening almost immediately -- six of them in River North. Twenty years later, & after View of building following the fire in April 1989. many other changes in the world & the Photo courtesy of Erik Richmond global economy, five of those nine remain in business: Objects (reopened as Ann Nathan) and Zolla / Lieberman remain in River North. Peter Miller (now in the West Loop) and van Straaten (currently in Colorado), first reopened in River North before moving years later. Habatat closed for years but eventually returned to River North under new management. Of those now closed: East-West Contemporary and Sazama-Brauer both initially reopened in River North; Klein Art Works went to the West Loop. Rowe Company Fine Arts closed immediately after the fire. The Building The Brunswick Balke-Collender factory building originally housed small manufacturing. With four entrances & freight elevators large enough to fit an entire bowling alley, the vastness of the gallery spaces offered resources for representing artists working on a large scale & for taking risks, inspiring dealers to house huge sculpture & monumental paintings. The Unanswered Question The fire started early on a Saturday morning, & the building was beyond help in a very short amount of time. There were accusations of faulty construction practices during ongoing building renovation as well as arson, but the cause of the fire was never determined. Paul Klein, who lost Klein Art Works in the fire, said that tenants were not aware that the sprinklers had been off for weeks. No one had thought much about the fire doors having been removed, since they assumed the sprinklers worked & hardly knew to anticipate the worst. Helpful Neighbors Following the devastation, some helpful neighbors came to the aid of galleries & dealers. The Merchandise Mart offered to rent space to galleries at extremely low rates so that they could keep their businesses open. The Chicago Artists Coalition mounted a benefit for the artists affected by the fire & helped with artist outreach and notification. The Lawyers for Creative Arts got involved with the many lawsuits & issues regarding insurance, at a time when many dealer/artist arrangements were as informal as handshakes. The Loss The fire was an unfathomable loss to the artists whose work was burned, & it was also crushing to dealers who lost artwork, files, business records & personal memorabilia. So much was unrecoverable. According to Natalie van Straaten, former Chicago Gallery News publisher & Executive Director of the Chicago Art Dealers Association, “The whole area looked like a bombed-out disaster site.” The building smoldered for over a week, but miraculously, there was no loss of life. The greatest loss was the artwork. Zolla/Lieberman had just mounted a Chema Cobo exhibition, representing a full year of the artist's work; William Lieberman had also been keeping his own personal collection at the gallery at the time. All of it was gone. Rowe Company Fine Arts had the entire estate of a deceased artist on the premises - all that his widow had of his artwork was destroyed. Twenty Years Later For quite awhile after the fire, to dealers & artists who had lost everything, it was the worst thing that had ever happened. According to Klein, “Finally, about five years later my son said one day, ‘Hey Dad, remember the gallery fire?’ ” The art community’s rapid expansion was centered in River North. The fire marked a significant turning point in the direction of that growth, but it’s impossible to say if River North’s art community would be stronger today, or if other areas would not have expanded, had the fire not happened. Dealers had to choose whether to stay in River North, where the gallery concentration had been growing, or to look for new frontiers and cheaper rent. Today, Chicago has over 180 commercial galleries, alternative spaces & art centers, spread out among many geographic areas. The fire also coincided with a severe downturn in the international art market. Eventually galleries bounced back with new determination, contributing to the community we enjoy today. The art business is a tough one, & the people who enter into it don’t tend to do it lightly - a devotion that undoubtedly carried the galleries that were nearly destroyed for good in 1989 & inspires our strong community in 2009, twenty years after the fire. 19

Answer: Every gallery district and every educational institution in Chicago offers the opportunity to discover exciting new Chicago artists. Except for galleries that specialize in Old or Modern Masters, work from the 19th or early 20th century, or art from countries outside the United States, most galleries here include work by Chicagoans in their programs. Listings of exhibition schedules or emphasis on “emerging” talent in Chicago Gallery News descriptions are good clues to discovering newcomers. Don’t hesitate to ask the dealers in the galleries you visit if they have work by Chicago artists. Examples of galleries who exhibit some of Chicago’s most well-known artists are: Ann Nathan, Jean Albano, Printworks, Tony Wight, Aaron Packer, Roy Boyd, Carl Hammer, Thomas Robertello…to name only a few. Chicago artists whose work is shown in these galleries range from those with “emerging” careers to others who are established and internationally well known. In addition to gallery exhibits, The Museum of Contemporary Art features a Chicago artist each month in its 12 x 12 program. You might also attend MFA shows at area art schools. These generally are held at the end of the academic year, and works usually are for sale. Among them: The School of The Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC); Columbia College; University of Illinois at Chicago, and the American Academy of Art. Some schools also have year-around galleries: Illinois Institute of Art; Betty Rymer Gallery and the Sullivan Galleries at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago; Columbia College’s DEPS spaces and galleries; University of Illinois’s I space. There are special events such as the Chicago Artists Coalition’s annual “Art Open,” which features work by hundreds of local artists. (caconline.org) This is held in October during Chicago Artists Month– an extensive program throughout the city featuring programs highlighting artwork by local artists. (chicagoartistsmonth.org) Also included in the Chicago Artists Month schedule is the annual Pilsen East Artist’s Open House at the end of September, an event that has been going on for nearly 40 years. And each month the Chicago Arts District coordinates 2nd Fridays, when dozens of studios and spaces are open. Many other neighborhoods have started coordinating regular tours and walks as well. Keep your eyes open and it won’t take any time at all to start discovering new Chicago artists.

PILSEN • SOUTH NEIGHBORHOODS • CHICAGO ARTS DISTRICT Our South Side map covers a vast part of the city from Roosevelt Rd. south to the Indiana border; Central Ave. on the west & east to Lake Michigan. Neighborhoods include Pilsen, Bridgeport, Hyde Park, Chinatown & Bronzeville. The largest concentration of galleries in the area is in Pilsen East’s Chicago Arts District, near Halsted & 18th Streets. Other major south side art destinations include: the Museum Campus, National Vietnam Veterans Art Museum, Mexican Fine Arts Center Museum, DuSable Museum, & both the University of Chicago’s Smart Museum & The Renaissance Society. NORTH SIDE • WICKER PARK/ BUCKTOWN LINCOLN PARK • LAKEVIEW & BEYOND The “district” of the North Side covers a broad geographical area, including a number of neighborhoods such as Bucktown, Wicker Park, Lakeview, Lincoln Park and Old Town. The north side also includes the Chicago History Museum, streets surrounding the North/Milwaukee/Damen intersection, and scores of artists living & working in Chicago.

Bring your map with you on opening nights, gallery visits and to other special events.

SUBURBS AND BEYOND Beyond the city limits, the Chicago art scene continues in galleries and university spaces. As The Spirit Moves You An exhibit of 2D & 3D works and installation exploring spirit, spiritual practice and mysticism curated by Aldo Castillo.

Faking It? - The advent of digital photography and manipulation has created an environment of questioning whether an image is "real" or "fake." In portrait photography, this concept reflects the question of whether an image is truly documentary or in fact reveals a staged moment. This exhibition challenges the notion of portraiture as capturing truth and how the line between fact and fiction is received. Curated by Regina Mamou.

CGN FAQ One of the most frequent questions Chicago Gallery News receives is how to sell a work on the secondary market. Sometimes galleries will take work on consignment if it’s by an artist they represent, or occasionally they may be interested in purchasing a piece outright. Usually we recommend you contact an auction house for a complimentary estimate and to discuss if you can work together to sell the piece at auction. Before contacting the auction house, gather as much information as you can - know where it was purchased, how you acquired it, who the artist is, etc. Have digital images available, and be prepared to fill out documentation about the piece, even if you don’t know much. As always, the more info you have, the better. You’re bound to learn something in your search! 45
