ON THE COVER - The Fine Arts Building Art Attack! Art and culture come alive in the Fine Arts Building —the oldest building on Michigan Avenue. Stepping through the doors of the 1885 building transports you to another century, to a creative retreat from today’s hustle and bustle. Originally known as the Studebaker Building (1885–1898), the Fine Arts Building (FAB) was converted from a carriage assembly and showroom. Reopened after extensive renovation in 1898, it immediately became the hub of Chicago's Arts and Crafts movement, as well as the headquarters for a burgeoning musical and literary culture. Located on South Michigan Avenue near the Art Institute of Chicago, this longest-running arts colony in the United States is a must-see haven for art lovers. Today, you can ride in one of the ornate, hand-operated elevators to any of the building’s ten floors and rub elbows with many of the dedicated visual artists in the building. Fill your ears with the sublime echoes of vocal and musical talent, or be mesmerized by classic art works by famed greats, such as Frank Lloyd Wright, whose first studio was here. The FineArtsBuilding.com and its web channel, ArtsEntertainment.com, stream live 24/7; the broadcasting and recording studio has an annual interna-

tional audience of over 12 million, showcasing live Jazz and Classical concerts, Shakespearean recitals, and passionate visual artists. These facilities provide the most unique visual and auditory experience ‘round the clock, round the world.’ Discover this world of culture and art on December 10, 2010 for the Annual Night at the Fine Arts Building open house. During the rest of the year, art enthusiasts can join Second Friday — a night that buzzes with creativity each month when FAB artists open their studios for a building-wide event. The Fine Arts Building’s sister artist colony, The Flat Iron Building, is located at the epicenter of Wicker Park & Bucktown. Visit the building’s eclectic art community, including The Flat Iron Arts Organization, each month for the First Friday open house. September 10-12 join the vibrant, bold artists for the Beyond-the-Coyote Art Fair. Chicago is fortunate to have two such artist communities in dynamic neighborhoods. If you’re an artist interested in learning more about these spaces and events, including studios for lease, in the Fine Arts Building or the Flat Iron Building please contact us.

News - What’s Happening There is much to enjoy from now until the end of the year, and this issue is your indespensible guide to events, art walks, gallery exhibitions, art news, and more. It takes more than a temperature drop to signal the change of seasons in Chicago’s art world, but the signs of renewed activity after a late summer slumber are unmistakable, and the buzz doesn’t stop until the new year.

Letter from the Publisher Each year our spring issue is filled with a natural energy and excitement as Chicagoans look forward to a Chicago summer after a long winter hibernation. As CGN plans for our September-December issue there is a sort of instinctive dread of the fall: back to school. Back to work. Looming cold weather and shorter days. Another year has flown by. But there is positive side to rounding the bend again. To the CGN office fall brings a renewed sense of purpose. It’s during these pleasant months that the elegant, architectural skyline glows in its splendid reflection in the crisp lake, surrounded by autumn colors. The world dwells on our harsh winters, and then praises the glorious summer by the water, but come September, those of us who live here are eager to spend weekends in town. We bask in the change of seasons, and we reclaim the city as our own for a few weeks, once the tourists have gone home. Our overflowing fall cultural calendar is another reason Chiagoans stay busy and in town. The gallery season opens with a splash in September; at the sound of an imaginary starting pistol, we’re off on the free trolleys, hopping from one gallery to the next, trying to see it all in a single night. Then, the entire month of October honors the Chicago artist, offering endless events, lectures, tours and more, all taking place in venues and studios throughout the city’s neighborhoods. The weeks go quickly as we put one more fundraiser, preview party, celebration or holiday behind us. October and November bring us back indoors to art fair season. The wealth of specialties, from antiques and modernism, to sculpture and glass, shows us that there is always knowledge to learn, and unique art to explore. While still in the ‘back to school’ spirit, visitors to the art fairs are ready to engage with the experts and discover art with colleagues and friends. Once the fairs are over, and the openings calender is a little lighter, we can take advantage of special musuem exhibitions, such as Echoes of the Past: The Buddhist Cave Temples of Xiangtangshan at the Smart Museum of Art; Luc Tuymans at the Museum of Contemporary Art; and Leon Golub: Live and Die Like a Lion? at Northwestern’s Block Museum. These exhibitions take us all the way to the year ahead and make us grateful for the many outstanding institutions right in our own back yard. On a personal note, I’d like to dedicate this outstanding September-December 2010 issue to the wonderful man I am marrying this fall. He patiently shares me with the gallery world, and this magazine, all year long.

Art Events & Highlights Last All Season cave carvings. Using sophisticated 3-D equiptment, the project's imaging team photographed and scanned nearly 100 objects from museums and private collections believed to be from Xiangtangshan. Organized by the Smart Museum and the Smithsonian Institution's Arthur M. Sackler Gallery, Echoes of the Past is on view September 30-January 16, 2011, before embarking on a tour to Washington DC, Dallas, and San Diego. 3-D digital reconstruction from South Cave, Northern Xiangtangshan, with missing fragments shown in yellow. Image by Jason Salavon and Travis Saul.

Groundbreaking Buddhist Cave Temple Exhibition at The Smart Museum of Art Deep in the mountains of northern China, the Buddhist cave temples of Xiangtangshan existed as a major cultural achievement of the 6th century Northern Qi dynasty until the early 19th century, when the site was stripped of its sculptures for sale on the international art market. Echoes of the Past: The Buddhist Cave Temples of Xiangtangshan at the Smart Museum of Art at the University of Chicago examines the religious and artistic significance of these caves through their ancient objects; it also imagines the site as it once was, using innovative digital reconstructions. A monumental bodhisattva begins the exhibit on a traditional note; style, iconography, religious context, and the removal of the sculptures from the caves is described. Because Xiangtangshan was damaged so extensively, it has been all but impossible to understand the rich and complex artistic achievement of the caves and visualize their original appearance. The most unique element to the exhibit, is its basis: a multi-year research project involving scanning and digital simulations. In 2004, the University's Center for the Art of East Asia launched "The Xiangtangshan Caves Project: Reconstruction and Recontextualization," an ongoing project to identify, locate, and document dispersed 18

Leon Golub at Mary and Leigh Block Musuem of Art The Block presents the first major exhibition of Chicago artist Leon Golub’s later drawings in Leon Golub: Live & Die Like a Lion?. Made between 1999 and 2004, these drawings give new insight to the artist widely known as a painter. Golub used colorful animals, erotic imagery, and graphic text as foundations for larger-scale works, and as a creative outlet when his failing health prevented him from painting. The exhibition runs September 24 – December 12, 2010.

Artist Insights CGN spent some time talking with Ellen Lanyon, hearing about who inspired her to become an artist, and how she began to find wonder in the curious and everyday. Lanyon shared how Chicago’s “L” changed her way of seeing things, what it’s like to have one foot in New York and the other in Chicago, and what’s next. ship to the School of the Art Institute from this group and then, after four years of study, a BFA.

Lanyon in her studio

Artist Ellen Lanyon’s connections to this city are numerous. Born in Chicago in 1926, she received her BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (she also received an Honorary Doctorate from SAIC in 2008), attended the University of Chicago, obtained an MFA from The University of Iowa, and studied restoration at The Courtauld Institute University of London. Having taught for almost 40 years, Lanyon is a retired Associate Professor from The Cooper Union, New York City. Lanyon was represented in Chicago for 20 years by Richard Gray Gallery, and today the 83 year-old artist works as much as ever, now represented by Valerie Carberry Gallery & Printworks Ltd., both in Chicago, and Pavel Zoubok of New York, NY.

During my student years several situations were very career-formative. In 1944 George Buehr and Margo Hoff invited me to be a work scholarship student at Ox-Bow, where I studied with them as well as with Max Kahn, Eleanor Coen, and Francis Chapin, who inspired my decision to pursue painting and printmaking. Back at school some of my classmates were Joan Mitchell, Nancy Spero, Leon Golub and Seymour Rosofsky; all remained colleagues for years. After school hours I worked in the Museum for the contemporary curator Katherine Kuh, and for the Department of Prints and Drawings where assisting with installation of exhibits was a hands-on education.

Another opportunity for me was, until discontinued, the juried Chicago and Vicinity Annuals at the Art Institute; they acted as a conduit to success for many young midwestern artists. Students we were included and won prizes, and for me, as well as others, this led to gallery representation in the U.S. and Europe. However, in 1948, in response to a ruling restricting students, (many were GI veterans) from exhibiting in the Annuals, students joined together in the Exhibition Momentum rebellion against the Art Institute. Momentum was a cooperative alternative exhibition venue, juried gratis by professional New York artists and curators. It was an intense Lanyon has received countless prestigious backbone building experience. After three exhibiawards and commissions; her work has been included in more than 70 solo exhibitions, includ- tions our efforts were rewarded with the revocation of the exclusion rule. ing one organized by the National Collection of American Art, Smithsonian. Many retrospectives of Lanyon’s career have traveled the country, and the artist has participated in multiple group exhibitions at renowned institutions. Lanyon’s works are included in many public, corporate and private collections in the US and abroad.

Lanyon is currently preparing for 3 exhibitions. Her first show with Pavel Zoubok in New York is in November: paintings based on reassembled images from her INDEX books.** She is part of Printworks’ 30th Anniversary show in December, and in May 2011, Printworks will show egg temperas on panels & paper. Valerie Carberry will also show Lanyon’s work in Chicago in 2011. We are so pleased she took time out of her busy schedule to share her story and wisdom. My grandfathers immigrated from England to Woodlawn and Englewood on the South side of Chicago and both worked as artists on the 1893 Columbian Exposition. My maternal grandfather lived long enough to paint murals for the Century of Progress in 1933; after his death all of his tools and art materials became a gift for my 12th birthday. And so, the die was cast.

After earning an MFA in painting from the University of Iowa, a Fulbright to The Courtauld Institute in London, and travel through postwar Europe, returning to Chicago instead of New York was a big decision based on funds and possibilities. With my husband Roland Ginzel and three other fellow printmakers from Iowa who owned presses, we formed the Chicago Graphic Workshop, a cooperative studio for lithography and etching that was open for a fee to anyone able to work independently in either medium. The shop lasted about four years and served many young artists.

This and other co-op exhibition activities, teaching, gallery representation and a sense of place During the depression, designated Chicago high kept me in Chicago until 1978, when I began fifteen years of teaching at the Cooper Union in school art students went to the Art Institute for New York; for the first seven of those I commutthe Dudley Crafts Watson classes in Fullerton Hall, taught by the Chicago artist George Buehr. ed between the two cities. In 1985 we relocated We were given projects to render and bring in for east, I became active at the National Academy critique. I was lucky to be awarded a full scholar- and involved in the art milieu. 19

Additionally, being an activist and working with Heresies, a feminist collaborative publication, I found another way to belong. The ongoing invention coming from the feminist art community greatly influenced the plurality that is found today. However, in spite of being “New Yorkbased” I remain, by definition, a Chicago artist. Two years ago I established a small alternative studio in Chicago. As long as I have a place to work and keep subject matter available it’s unimportant where I am at any given time. Home base is where the creative process lives. Egg tempera was my medium since the ‘40s. While at Iowa, surrounded in class by large scale, predominantly abstract oils, it seemed important to join the club, but I was a total failure. My professor said “sit at a table, face the wall and paint with your eggs.” That best advice gave me the permission I needed to become a creative individual. It was my thesis topic then, and I continue to work in the medium today. The first paintings were city-scapes. My use of an altered perspective was influenced by traveling to the Loop on the “L” to school everyday, as well as studying 15th C. Sienese paintings in the Art Institute galleries. I was labeled a “Sophisticated Primitive” and continued to work in that manner into the late ‘50s, when a desire to work large and with the figure led to a series of oil paintings inspired by vintage family photographs. Then, old papers full of rotogravure photos of beach, sports and the circus translated into another series. The work was well-received, but in 1967 a physical intolerance to solvents made me switch to acrylics. It was two years before I adjusted to the new medium. I abandoned the figure and turned to environmental concerns, animals and the natural world. In time, my preoccupation with collecting eccentric objects led me to use them as subjects for work focusing on stage magic and strange juxtapositions. In New York in the late ‘70s, it seemed a sensibility that typified Chicago art was all but ignored. Then, with the influence of both Phyllis Kind and Allan Frumkin Galleries, and a changing face of an approach to imagery, art from Chicago became something to reckon with. Tastemakers now are also taking another look at Surrealism and work that is driven by metaphysical concerns. For my generation of artists, when the Chicago collections of Ruth Horwich, Lindy and Edwin Bergman, and Joseph Shapiro were made available to us, they were an inspiration for imaginative imagery. Due to surreal and dada sensibilities that permeated work by so many Chicago artists, it is no wonder that groups assembled and were identified as the Monster Roster, Una Tendenza* Americana, the Hairy Who, and other self named imagists. It is evident that the ongoing strength of Chicago’s creativity is its individualistic passion for the well crafted narrative. *Una Tendenza Americana, by Robert Barnes, Ellen Lanyon, June Leaf, James McGarrell, Irving Petlin, Seymour Rosofsky **INDEX, 60 drawings containing images of over 360 objects from Lanyon’s cabinets of curiosities, translated into prints and books.

Social Media in Chicago Chicago’s Department of Tourism gets visitors to explore various city neighborhoods and unique activities all year. CGN’s publisher spoke with City of Chicago Web Specialist Sarah Best about what to know, and what’s new. Many of us communicate now through social networking outlets; for those of us who do not yet Tweet or “check-in,” we’ve read articles dissecting the effects that Twitter, Facebook, and Foursquare are having on our social interactions, our attention spans, and our productivity. But there is another side to the data deluge: discovery and learning. More galleries are using Twitter to communicate, and many art enthusiasts follow museums, art centers and galleries to get up-tothe-minute updates about art news, exhibitions, or just general art chatter. To get some background about social media projects used on a large scale in Chicago, and to find out how galleries, collectors and artists might use the technology to discover our art community, I spoke with Sarah Best, the Department of Tourism’s Web Specialist for the City of Chicago. The Chicago Office of Tourism actively uses Foursquare, Twitter, Flickr, and Facebook to reach visitors, and since the department isn’t a member-based group, they’re not paid by businesses for any referrals; they’re responsible solely for getting people into the city’s neighborhoods and providing helpful, unbiased information. According to Best, “We do social media that helps meet the goals of extreme service to visitors. We are focused on leisure travel vs. convention activities, and we aim to connect visitors to locals.”

Chicago Gallery News has been active on Twitter (@ChiGalleryNews) and Facebook , but I was a little nervous about Foursquare before I spoke to Best. She explained how the City partnered early, embracing the service in fall of 2009, as a way to link visitors with a range of dynamic activities, particularly opportunities to collect ‘badges,’ AKA Foursquare bragging rights. Foursquare’s interactivity, mixed with competition, turns the city into a big scavenger hunt. Exploring is a little off beat, as well as personalized. You can measure the number of people attending an event or visiting a venue. You can tell where visitors are from; according to Best, people taking advantage of the city’s Foursquare offers come from over 30 states, as well as around the world. I asked Best how Foursquare could work in the gallery community; she said galleries are ‘venues’ that need to first be ‘in the system;’ then they must leverage ‘tips.’ For instance, the City has over 200 tips it gives out - suggestions about where to go to find unique neighborhood tours, memorable movie scene locations, famous works of art (think Calder Flamingo, a walking tour of the loop, or free shuttles during SOFA.) Users leave tips to let others know what’s

Tweeters & social networkers at the Art Chicago panel in May

good around town. Someone visiting a gallery district might leave a tip like, “Ask about upcoming Saturday gallery tour on November 20.” Or “Installations here by School of the Art Institute graduates.” There is a Warhol Badge you can collect by visiting 10 different galleries. There is a Swarm Badge, which means that 50 people are ‘checking-in’ at a specific location – a gallery opening, an art fair preview, an artist lecture or open studio. Foursquare users get into the competition, since they like collecting things and trying to one-up their friends. Foursquare isn’t for everyone, and it still sort of mystifies me, but I learned a lot from talking to Best; her insights let me imagine the possibilities for connecting the art world and helping people learn and discover art. Trying to reach new patrons and art enthusiasts is an ongoing effort for galleries and museums. Best says that Twitter has helped the Tourism Department reach some visitors for the first time, and also answer unusual questions. Online, the City reaches those who might not stop into the visitor center, and Twitter still allows people to have a conversation with a knowledgeable, live guide. It’s daunting to visit a city and not know how to efficiently find what interests you. I ask friends who’ve previously traveled to a place for recommendations. The city is doing this service digitally, on a large scale, and making a different impact than a guidebook can. Chicago is a city that continues to expand and change, and we certainly are part of a community that is welcoming to locals and visitors alike, either in person, or online.

Ask Natalie Question: I love going to SOFA, but I would like to understand more about the glass that permeates the show. Blown? Slumped? Fused? I’m con-fused. Answer: Not all artwork at SOFA is glass. You’ll find metal sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, furniture, objects in wood, fabric, etc. But indeed there is a wide range of studio glass. A basic explanation of some the techniques used to create these amazing works of art are: Blown glass. A glassblower works at a furnace with a lump of molten glass at the end of a metal rod and hand tools to blow and shape the form. At this stage, the glass is typically 2100° fahrenheit with the consistency of honey. When cooled, it hardens. “Blown” glass includes work by well-known artists such as Dale Chihuly and Lino Tagliapietra. Lampworked or Flame-worked glass. Using torches and kilns, the artist generally works at a bench using rods and tubes of glass, shaping the piece with hand tools. Paperweights by Paul Stankard exemplify the realism and level of detail possible with these techniques. Cast glass: Perhaps the oldest method, this work is done at a furnace or in a kiln. The artist makes a mold; glass is heated at a temperature higher than for blown glass. Molten glass is scooped out of the furnace with a large ladel and poured into the mold. Fused glass and slumped glass are similar to cast glass, but the temperature is not as high. In fusing, multiple pieces are arranged in a pattern and heated in a kiln. In slumping, the glass is laid into, or on top of a mold and heated just to the point where it “slumps” or moves with gravity when it becomes fluid. Once the glass reaches the desired form it is cooled quickly enough to stop the movement but slow enough not to destroy the structure. Cold Work refers to methods that work with glass in its cold (not molten) state. Examples are sandblasting, engraving, etching, cutting, grinding, polishing, painting and bonding. Not all works in the show will have labels identifying techniques; don’t hesitate to ask booth representatives for information. There also are workshops, demonstrations, and talks during SOFA. More than a marketplace for showcasing and selling art objects, the annual event offers a great opportunity to learn not only about glass, but about woodturning, ceramics, jewelry design and collecting in general. SOFA Chicago takes place November 5-7 at Navy Pier. Visit www.sofaexpo.com for details.

Collector Conversations Writer Alicia Eler spent some time with Scott J. Hunter, and his dog Tyler, in Chicago’s South Loop to talk about how he gradually came to collect art, what it is about abstract art that intrigues him now, and his own “rule of three” when it comes to really wanting to acquire an artist’s work. In the early 2000s, I got to know Chicago art dealers Wendy Cooper and John McKinnon of Wendy Cooper Gallery, as wel as Susan Gescheidle, owner of the now-defunct gescheidle gallery. I also got to know Andrew Rafacz and Rowley Kennerk, both Chicago dealers. And what really captured me was the opportunity to build relationships with these art professionals. I was then introduced to the artists they were showing, and I learned why they showed them. What really propelled me into active collecting was meeting and interacting with the artists themselves.

Collector Scott Hunter at home

As we sit down in art collector Scott J. Hunter’s home in Chicago’s South Loop, his aging, redfurred dog, Tyler, collapses at my feet. As I rub Tyler’s soft head, Scott begins telling me about his contemporary art collection, which contains more than 150 pieces of art, and focuses on abstract work, outsider art and work that can only be described as “obsessive.” As Scott talks about art, his dark brown eyes light up. “The work in my collection is quite evocative of who I am and what I consider important,” he says. But what’s more important than the art itself, I learn, is getting to know the artists themselves. For Scott, it’s all about the relationships. Did one specific thing get you started collecting art? It really kind of happened over time. I always had a strong interest in visual and performing arts. I was very lucky to go to a high school in Arlington, Virginia, that had a very active arts program. Lloyd Wolf, a Washington DC-based photographer, was my photography instructor. I used my Bar Mitzvah money to buy a camera, and spent a lot of time learning and developing my photography. I started realizing that I didn’t want to go into art as a career, and I felt that I would be more fulfilled by going into the sciences. I’m now a trained psychologist, and currently the Associate Professor of Psychiatry, Behavioral Neuroscience and Pediatrics in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neuroscience at University of Chicago. In 1999, I moved back to Chicago from Virginia to accept the position that I now have at University of Chicago.

Molly ZuckermanHartung, Untitled (Rowley Kennerk Gallery, Chicago, 2007)

Tell me about the type of work you collect. The work in my collection tends to fall into a few categories. There’s abstract, like work by Matt Stolle and Susanna Bluhm. Then there’s work that can be categorized as “obsessional,” like that by Xylor Jane, who showed with Wendy Cooper. Jane’s pieces are made with very intricate, gestural lines, and she lives with Asperger syndrome, so her work was kind of my bridge to exploring outsider art, which I’m also invested in. I also own pieces by Martin McMurry, for example.

Is there a single artist that dominates your collection? Right now I probably own the most works by Matthias Dornfeld, a German artist who shows with Rowley Kennerk. Before committing himself full-time to art, he worked with the mentally ill, which kind of pushed his interests. I’ve developed a really great relationship with Matthias, and I’ll probably continue to very actively collect his work. He’s capturing these underlying emotions that exist in the individuals that he paints, and it’s a really primitive approach to painting, both very gestural and implying heavy texture. He does a lot of figurative work, but it feels quite abstract. I also own a lot of work by Matt Stolle. I wasfirst introduced to him through Andrew Rafacz.

Matthias Dornfeld, Junior, (Rowley Kennerk Gallery, Chicago, 2007)

Xylor Jane, 409 Lines (detail) (Wendy Cooper Gallery, Chicago, 2005)

Do you have a strategy for collecting? My rule is that if I really want to collect someone’s work, my goal is to have at least three of their pieces. If someone really strikes me, I want to make sure that I have a good representation of what they are doing. But now I have to think about how I integrate their work as they change and grow over time.

I don’t have much work that focuses on identity politics, except for Zoe Charleton’s 2005 piece The Sailor, in which she plays with notions of race based on former slave relationships. What intrigues you about abstract work? For me, what I often think about with abstract work is how affect and idea are in fact being manipulated into the story. I can project onto it, but it’s not necessarily what the artist is representing; that captures a different meaning. Which artist’s work did you first begin collecting? When I moved back to Chicago from Virginia in 2000, I purchased my first large painting from Carrie Iverson, a printmaker, painter and glass artist. It was actually my first major art commitment. Carrie and I are both from Virginia, and her interests are memory, and how politics and identity are contextualized in identity. Her research focuses on memory and her interest in photography is about how one creates memory out of experience. This is another theme that attracts me to work by a number of the artists that I collect. 21

15 Minutes with a Dealer Art dealer Tony Wight, looking ahead to 2011, shared some insights and reflections with Thomas Masters: how a part-time storefront gallery in Wicker Park became Tony Wight Gallery in the West Loop; thoughts on artists under 40; the economy’s impact on the art business, and what he thinks of our city’s art fairs. the artists I show is that their work is conceptually grounded yet visually striking, and pertinent, within the contemporary art discourse. Tell us a bit about how a recent collaboration with another Chicago gallery, Donald Young, came together to show the work of your artist Ken Fandell. Fandell also has an exhibition scheduled at your gallery this winter. Donald actually exhibited one of Ken’s videos in a group show called SOUND VIDEO IMAGES OBJECTS back in 2001. I approached Donald knowing that he liked Ken’s work and that exposure to Donald’s audience would be positive for Ken’s career. Donald has a world-class program that operates on a different level than my own. The collaboration was really about creating an opportunity for Ken as I am always looking for ways to promote my artists and broaden their visibility. Have you experienced or noticed any recent sea changes in the way business in the art world is done since becoming a full-time dealer? What do you think is on the other side, say in ten years, of shifts that have come about as a result of our evolving economy? Not so much really. I don’t see things as ever being “usual”; there is either more or less demand, that’s about it. Right now, obviously, there has been less demand and I have to make more concerted efforts in choosing work to show and finding the right fit for my program.

Gallery installation view at 845 W. Washington

For those who don't know you, please share your story of how you got started in the art business. Do you have any great stories that shaped your life as a dealer up until now? In 1997, while working full-time at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), a friend and I started Bodybuilder and Sportsman Gallery on West Division Street in Chicago’s Wicker Park neighborhood. The space was a former sporting goods store—hence the sign and the name. We lived in back of the former store and used the front fifteen feet of the space for exhibitions. Because it was a storefront, and we were open only on Saturdays, the windows on the façade allowed people to see the shows any time.

I always love to hear dealer impressions of Art Chicago and NEXT, as well as art fairs in general. Do you participate in many fairs? Art Chicago and NEXT are well liked locally but appear to have difficulty attracting significant attention, but perhaps in the next few years this will turn around so that again this city will get the kind of national and international galleries and audience it deserves. I decided to sit out the fairs last year because of the economy and the decision to move and build out a new space. From what I’ve observed and heard, Art Basel in Switzerland and in Miami were each relatively stable, while some of the other fairs seemed to suffer a bit. Though I’ve not participated in an art fair for over a year. I believe it’s time to anticipate an increase in business, and participating in an art fair really helps to foster relationships. The time off from the fairs gave me the chance to take a long, close look at what we’d been doing, to reevaluate and more carefully and thoughtfully plan out our future direction. So, I’m glad to report that this year we will exhibit at NADA in Miami, and we are hoping to participate in the upcoming Armory NYC fair.

It was a strange period in the Chicago art world: N.A.M.E. and Randolph Street galleries were closing, and the Uncomfortable Spaces galleries were in flux. We decided to show our friends’ artwork, mostly. After my partner married and left Chicago in 2000, I moved to the West Loop in the fall of that year. I quit my job at SAIC and became a full time art dealer in 2001. You recently completed an West Loop move from 119 N. Peoria to 845 W. Washington, around the corner. How has the new space changed your business and your outlook? The move took longer than anticipated. We ran into several issues that delayed the opening of the new space by a few months. However, now that we’ve reopened, with several successful shows completed, I couldn’t be happier. The new space is larger, brighter, and more conducive to the type of program we have. The move hasn’t changed the business or my outlook. I still want the work of the artists I show to be included in exhibitions around the world and become part of major public collections. It’s really given us the incentive and opportunity to focus on developing a striking and definitive program. It’s an exciting time for us.

The gallery represents a small, but strong group of artists. What connects them all, besides the fact that most of them are under the age of 40? Has the gallery had the same unifying vision or program mission from the start? The process of selecting artists has changed a bit over the years. At first it was about giving local artists a venue, but that has changed and become more far-reaching. I am interested in fueling my own aesthetic interests while engaging current art world discussions. I’ve tried to incorporate strong local artists with other perhaps more well-known artists from elsewhere so as to forge a strong interaction within the Tony Wight Gallery 845 W. Washington, 2nd Fl., Chicago, IL 60607 larger art world--regardless of my location. Working in a variety of media, and at varying levels of art-historical engagement, what connects tonywightgallery.com 23

Shneider focused on the female nude as her muse for more than 20 years. A regular exhibitor at local and regional art competitions, her work has the distinction of being “banned” from the Congressional Senate Office Chambers in Washington D.C. due to Republican censorship. The “banned”, offensive painting was welcomed in Representative Barney Frank’s office for the duration of the exhibition. Her career was cut short when she died from lung cancer in 2009, at the height of her artistic powers. We are proud to feature her retrospective show, which includes over 25 works in the gallery. Half of the proceeds from the sale of her work will be donated to the nonprofit cancer survivors assistance foundation, LUNGevity.

Chicago Tribune art critic Alan Artner states, ‘Friedman Show Evinces Portraiture Elegance... [Her paintings] present the artist’s strong technique with admirable, even beguiling, clarity.’

CGN FAQ One of the most frequent questions Chicago Gallery News receives is how to sell a work on the secondary market. Sometimes galleries will take work on consignment if it’s by an artist they represent, or occasionally they may be interested in purchasing a piece outright. Usually we recommend you contact an auction house for a complimentary estimate and to discuss if you can work together to sell the piece at auction. Before contacting the auction house, gather as much information as you can - know where it was purchased, how you acquired it, who the artist is, etc. Have digital images available, and be prepared to fill out documentation about the piece, even if you don’t know much.
