Spring at Longwood Gardens

A

fter the chilly months of winter, my soul thirsts for the beauty and newness of spring. One of my favorite places to drink up some of what I need is Longwood Gardens, approximately two and a half hours northeast of Hagerstown. Longwood offers a continually changing display throughout the grounds and the conservatory to enthrall guests during every season; however, I feel the spring display is the most impressive.

Three years ago, prompted by an email about peak bloom time, I made my first spring visit to Longwood Gardens. It was Mother’s Day weekend, and I decided Page 6

that was how my son and I should spend the day celebrating my C-section and resultant journey into motherhood.

We hit the highway early to maximize time in the garden. Gabriel traveled complete with bicycle helmet; it was no reflection on my driving and had more to do with a phase and my attitude of picking your battles. I did insist he leave the helmet in the car at our destination, as I felt Longwood Gardens posed a relatively low risk of head injury.

Even with an early arrival at Longwood, the parking areas were filling up, and we needed to park in an overflow lot. I quickly realized I was not the only person who felt the gardens were a fun Mother’s Day activity as the gardens hummed with the low conversations of many people in wide-eyed wonderment over the displays. The sun was shining, the air warm and fragrant, and as we left the car, I felt confident I had picked an excellent adventure for the day.

As we entered the gardens, my pace quickened, my soul thrilling with the rainbow of vibrant color and beauty spread before us. Artistically and masterfully planned, we found acres of spring blooms. Gabriel and I joined the crowds of people admiring the flowers and snapping photographs. The gardens were full of tulips in every color, daffodils, azaleas, foxglove, dogwood trees, and fountains.

Gabriel enjoys one of the butterfly sculptures in the children’s garden at Longwood Gardens, If I had not been accompanied by an energetic little boy, I would have been content to set up camp for a while. But truth be told, Gabriel enjoyed Longwood Gardens for about 2 minutes. Who knew that a 4-year-old boy would not absolutely love admiring flowers for hours? In typical boy fashion, he found a stick that he carried through the gardens, occasionally striking things with it.

When I reprimanded him, I heard, “I was hitting a bee,” a few times until I made the stick disappear. The rest of the time, he whined about anything and everything. “No more pictures.” “I never want to see these flowers again.” “If I don’t, eat I’m going to get seasick.” “I never want to come here again.” “Isn’t there anything else to do?” “Is that a wasp?” “Is that a bee?” “I’m scared of that wasp/bee.” He did like walking some of the trails, visiting the topiary garden, and watching the creek and the waterfall while listening to the bells in the carillon tower during one of the concerts. He asked me where the whales were in the creek, but I do not think he believed me when I said the pirates drove them away.

What a blessing when before we left Longwood Gardens, I found the outdoor children’s garden. Gabriel spent about a half an hour in the children’s garden, which is landwww.childguidemagazine.com

scaped in fun and engaging ways, such as a plant maze for children to walk through and gardens with chimes and kidfriendly decor to explore. Little ones can enjoy sitting in butterfly chairs and visiting the gazebo covered in large metal butterfly sculptures or splashing in the four-leaf clover shaped fountain. Gabriel took a few runs through the plant maze and then thoroughly soaked himself in the fountain. I think it was the happiest he was all day, and I am glad he found something to enjoy there as well. After all, Mother’s Day is not really about me without being about him too.

On our way out of the gardens to find a late lunch before Gabriel got seasick, I found a nice shortcut to get us back to the car from children’s garden, and Gabriel told me, “I’m so happy we didn’t have to walk back through the valley of roses to get out of here.” I would have joyfully taken another trip through the valley of roses, but sometimes it is just best to leave on a high note.

How to ease our worried minds BY

hether your children are headed to day camp or sleep away camp, chances are you’ve had a moment (or more) or worry. You’re not alone, we’ve all felt it. Clenching stomachs. Rising heart rates. As parents our minds race through every worrisome event that could possibly happen to our children.

Fearful of the dangers of contemporary society, parents often worry about safety issues, particularly those outside of the home. Yet, statistically, our kids are safer than children of previous generations.

“Many parents perceive this to be the most dangerous time in world history for their children. But this simply isn’t so. Serious drugs are down, murder is down, theft is down, bullying is down, and kidnapping is down. But that is not our perception. We tend to think that the most frightening dangers are the most likely,” says Christie Barnes, mother of four and author of “The Paranoid Parents Guide.”

We have to remember there are only certain areas of our kid’s upbringing we have power over.

Much of our lives, and that of our children, remains out of our individual influence.

What we can control

Worrying is a natural impulse, natures way of ensuring we raise the healthiest children we can. But it is necessary to acknowledge that worry isn’t logical. The process of worrying releases chemicals in the brain that cause us to become panicked. This is useful when you confront an angry unchained dog or see a car veering off course, but the same chemicals are released with information we perceive as dangerous but holds no impending threat.

A fearful television show, or a frightening crime casually mentioned at a grocery store, can send a mother into weeks of sleepless

nights.

“Parents need to know what is likely to happen to their child, in their neighborhood, in their age group and fix what they can fix,” continues Barnes.

When selecting a camp, parents can ask about the safety record of the camp, the number of lifeguards, and the ratio between counselors and campers. Also, consider visiting the camp and meeting the staff.

Then, of course, trust your instincts.

What we can do to ease our fears

If you’ve found a great camp, and the kiddos are excited, embrace that feeling of confidence. In order to be assured, we need to feel safe ourselves. If television and online stories are causing parental panic, turn them off. Ignoring sensational media can help parents focus on real issues, instead of spending time and resources on unique dangers, which are making news because of the exceptional nature of the event.

We need to trust ourselves as parents, find a sense of safety and share that sense of security with our children. Because as parents, we need to teach our kids to be resourceful and resilient. As these traits develop in our children it will be less painful for us to allow them more autonomy.

Paranoid-free parenting

Recognizing what we can control, and approaching parenting in a logical way, we can be confident we are doing all we can as a parent.

With our own increased confidence we will be more capable of shedding unwarranted worries. We can protect our children with safety precautions and we can fan ambitions while setting limits and establishing disciplinary measures.

as asking someone who thinks she’s drowning to stop and assess the situation. Are you really struggling to stay above water, or are you in a knee-deep pool and your fear of water is getting the better of you?

Parents need to trust their instincts, but in a rational way. Care for your child to the best of your knowledge and abilities. And remember, with experience, this will all become easier,” says Cheryl Wu of LaGuardia Place Pediatrics.

So, is worrying part of parenting?

Yes. But it doesn’t have to consume our thoughts. And we can try to worry about the right things. Attempt to turn an uncomfortable feeling into a productive parenting method. Insist on helmets, seat belts and homework. Research summer camps and ask families you trust for recommendations. And as we try our best, we can love our children wholeheartedly every step of the way. Thankfully, those things are completely in our control.

Growing Concerns about Lyme disease this summer

ummer is the perfect time to be outdoors while the weather is still comfortable and the bugs not yet out in droves. Unfortunately, this coming summer tick populations are expected to increase, bringing with them more cases of Lyme disease.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is tracking cases of Lyme disease in the U.S and a clear increase of over 300,000 cases from the previous year. Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia are in the target zone. “The numbers of Lyme cases are increasing,” according to West Virginia University pediatric infectious disease specialist Kathy Moffett. Moffett said during a Public Radio interview, the mountains had been a barrier against ticks in West Virginia but that is changing. She added, “Maryland, Pennsylvania and Virginia all have high levels of Lyme.”

CDC statistics show almost 95 percent of reported Lyme cases came from the Northeast and mid-Atlantic states in 2015.

If you and your family love the outdoors, some simple precautions can help prevent Lyme, West Nile or other insect carried diseases. More than ever an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. One simple tip is to mow the grass where you will be walking. Ticks are most commonly found in tall grass, woods or gardens. When possible, mow a path for walking since short grass keeps them from jumping onto a passing host like a person, dog or deer.

When outside always wear long pants and long sleeves. Bugs can crawl up underneath loose clothing, so tuck pant legs into your socks or boots. Wear a hat and keep long hair up if possible. Wear white or light-colored clothes since ticks and other insects are easier to spot on a light background. Always check your children and yourself immediately when you come in from being outdoors.

And if going out, treat the outside of your clothes with insect repellents.

The most familiar insect repellents include DEET. Scientists report after several decades of research that DEET has a low toxicity for humans if, and this is important, used at concentrations between 10 and 30 percent. Using a product with a higher concentration is NOT more effective and can cause rashes and other problems. So with DEET less is better.

If chemical products worry you, consider botanical choices. As their popularity increases, so does their availability. For essential oils, lemon eucalyptus oil is the botanical found to be as effective as anything with 30 percent DEET. Other botanical oils with measurable repellent qualities include citronella, cedar, verbena, pennyroyal, geranium, lavender, pine, cinnamon, basil, thyme, garlic and peppermint. Also, studies show Neem, a soybean oil combined with other plant oils is effective against several problem insects. Found in a product called Buzz Away Extreme, Neem has been marketed for gardeners but at this time is not legally considered an insect repellent. Just remember, botanicals work for shorter periods of time and need to be reapplied periodically to be effective.

So this summer, apply some common sense, follow these tips and enjoy the great outdoors.

Sensitivity

ur beautiful children are created with wonderful traits. Society tends to view certain character traits in a negative light.

With good intentions, parents sometimes try to get rid of these traits. Shyness, bossiness, stubbornness, and pickiness can be frustrating. But, the silver lining is that these traits are actually good, and they also have the potential to be even better!

Parents building upon these traits can help their children gain confidence, and keep these traits from clouding their child’s character.

Let your child know that being sensitive is wonderful! Sensitive children are gifted with compassion and mercy. They care about their surroundings, and the needs of others. They are kind; running to other kids who get hurt on the playground. They hover around stressed parents, giving hugs to help them feel better. Children are often more sensitive than adults, because they are still developing, with emotions changing hundreds of times a day. One minute they are happy, and they next; they burst into tears. It’s normal; and children shouldn’t be scolded for behavior they can’t yet control.

Sensitive children are a gift! Many artists, musicians, chefs, and creative types are highly sensitive; including those on the Asperger’s/Autism scale. They are bright children, who will shine when they feel the safety of acceptance.

Accept the sensitivity, and build upon the good: Saying, “Don’t be so sensitive,” or “grow up” won’t stop children from crying. Thoughtless words will only cause more problems when it comes to managing emotions. Your child may begin to believe a lie; thinking there is something wrong with being sensitive. Truthfully, sensitivity is one of the most beautiful traits found in a grown adult! Talk to your children about their emotions. Pray with your child; whether your child is happy, angry, or sad. Your child will then feel loved and accepted, regardless of

which emotions are churning inside. Have family members share their vulnerable sensitive moments: watching sad movies, finding a butterfly with a broken wing, or not being invited to a party. Your child needs to know that other people feel sensitive too; that it’s a normal part of life!

Help your child to grow in sensitive situations: Pay a compliment when your child displays maturity in managing emotions, but don’t overdo it. For example: if your child is smacked hard by a basketball, but doesn’t cry, you might say, “That was a hard hit. Let me know if you need anything.” This acknowledges your child’s pain, without stating an expected reaction.

It leaves them free to come back later for ice – and a kiss. It also allows them the freedom to cry on a bad day; or choose to tough it out, without caring about what everyone else thinks. Be supportive with sensitive teens, as well. They are going through the stress of changing hormones, new relationships, exams, driving, and new job responsibilities. Demand respect, but offer grace and patience. Teens, especially sensitive teens, are highly prone to quickchanging emotions. These sensitive souls may also be the only ones who compassionately bring you a cup of tea when you’re sick, or rub your shoulders when you’ve had a rough day. Make time to talk to your teens and really listen to their feelings about friendships, fears, and the future. Even if you don’t understand their emotions, they are experiencing them. Be aware of teens mentioning extreme feelings of sadness, or suicidal thoughts. This is no longer about sensitivity; it’s about depression. Seek professional help from a Christian counselor or a professional licensed therapist. It could save your child’s life.

Love and support your child. Don’t give up! Don’t baby or coddle crying children who don’t get their own way. Do offer comfort when they cry tears of disappointment. Teach children the names for their emotions. This empowers them, by giving them a sense of control. Your child will

learn to respond to emotions, accordingly.

With a canceled playdate, the emotion is disappointment. Disappointment is temporary. Give your sad child a hug, and reschedule the playdate. With the loss of a pet (even a fish) the emotion is devastation.

Devastation means your child needs freedom to cry and grieve, as long as necessary. Being told to “get over it,” is cruel, and steals a child’s confidence.

During times of great sadness, ask what you can do to help your child feel better.

Most children simply need to sort out their feelings with a good cry. If the sadness lingers long enough to concern you, or it turns to hopelessness; get help. Your child will feel safe and loved, if allowed to express sensitivity without fear of being judged.

Encourage your child to grow up, but accept your child’s character: Being sensitive shouldn’t interfere with your child’s favorite friendships. Teach your child to practice forgiveness. This prevents the building up of sensitive issues. Teach boundaries, so your child will know it’s not okay to be teased for being sensitive. Teach your child to expect kindness, and to leave cruelty behind. If your child is sensitive to all living beings, yet has a playmate who purposely steps on every bug in sight, that isn’t being a good friend. Teach your child to find merciful friends – now. It will serve your child well into adulthood, preventing lots of heartache. Look for the silver lining: Enjoy your sensitive child, who has lots of surprises to bring your way!

atimazahra Essahili’s 5-year-old daughter, Rayhana, a kindergartener at Maugansville Elementary School is an inspiring fashion designer. Rayhana designs clothes from recycled paper, plastic, tablecloths, tulle, tissue paper, wrapping paper, gift bags and curtains, and her inspiration is born from cartoons and movies she watches, like Frozen, Mini Mouse and Princess Sofia. Rayhana also gets inspiration from kids’ books she reads, specifically princess stories and occasionally from wellknown designers.

Fatimazahra buys her all the supplies, and together as a team, Fatimazahra helps Rayhana by holding and cutting the tape, cutting the tulle, tissue paper and tablecloths, relying on clear packing tape and glue adhesives to secure the clothes together. Fatimazahra loves the priceless, unforgettable time spent with her daughter, and making and designing clothes is fun for both of them. They are able to make lasting, priceless memories, while Rayhana receives support and encouragement from her mother.

Rayhana uses any kind of material that can be found in her home, and uses materials that are easy to fold. She makes dresses, pants, skirts, shirts and anything to wear.

Currently, she makes clothes for herself and her dolls, but the idea of making boys clothes is intriguing, along with designs for all ages.

Rayhana’s friends are excited about the clothes she is making and often play dress up with her. She also makes dresses for women, so her friend’s mothers can also wear her creations. No one in her family is a designer or in the fashion industry – Rayhana’s love for clothes is her own talent.

She loves fashion, and playing dress up all the time, even making dresses from her mother’s blouses. Rayhana loves princess dresses, like all girls her age, and her favorite colors are pink and white.

She also enjoys arts and crafts, is creative by nature and loves drawing pictures of her pets, friends, plants, and flowers with a pencil or with colors.

Rayhana’s designs and creativity are her passions, and she works on her clothing designs occasionally after school and on the weekends. Rayhana doesn’t have a certain design in mind when she begins drawing for a new piece of clothing. Her freespirited creativity takes over and there is no planning involved until she picks up her pencil and paper and starts drawing.

Rayhana spends anywhere from 1 to 4 hours or more drawing, designing, cutting, taping and putting together her clothing.

Some of her more complex designs require more time, allowing more time to spend with her mother, while thinking creatively and expanding her clothing collection.

Fatimazahra is so proud of her daughter’s dedication and persistence to her craft and asserts that, “Kids can dream big and think creatively.”

Rayhana is working on her first collection of clothes, which are dresses for girls her age and in the future, she will start making pants and shirts. She has an Instagram page, which is princessghaliarayhana and Facebook is princessghaliarayhana.

Rayhana wants to be a fashion designer and a doctor when she grows up.

Beth Vollmer lives in Hagerstown, with her two-year-old son, Micah. Beth is passionate about writing, photography, animals, nutrition and exercise.
