What Motherhood Is to Me By

KATy ClARK

“Motherhood is buying a shirt for your daughter that she tried on and loved in the store only to have her refuse to wear it when she gets home because it’s too itchy.“

This was the status update I posted on my Facebook page recently. It’s so simple, yet so true. There are many more truths about motherhood that have come to me since I posted about the shirt. Truths about what motherhood is that apply right now, at this time in my life, as a working mom to two school-age kids. Truths such as: Motherhood is finding your best towel on the floor because it was used to clean up the Barbie pool. Motherhood is spending the last dollar in your wallet on your kids. Motherhood is getting the worst manicure from your daughter, but thinking it’s the best manicure.

Motherhood is signing health forms and tracking vaccinations. Again and again and again. Motherhood is holding hands, giving piggyback rides, and throwing Wiffle balls. Motherhood is watching your son drop a ball in a baseball game and get benched the next inning. Motherhood is watching the coach’s son drop a ball in a baseball game and NOT get benched the next inning. Motherhood is stocking up on your kids’ favorite cereal because it’s on sale, only to find out when you get home and unpack those 6 boxes

that it is no longer your kids’ favorite cereal. Motherhood is demanding your kids go to bed, wash their hair, and wear sunscreen because it’s good for them. Motherhood is learning how to dab from your kids. Motherhood is being told, “Mom, you can NEVER dab in public!” by your kids. Motherhood is sitting through episodes of Full House, Andi Mack or Henry Danger on TV. Again and again and again. Motherhood is wishing you had $1 for every time one of your kids asked, “What’s for dinner?” Motherhood is wishing you could actually make something for dinner that your kids would eat. Motherhood is watching your waistline – and your heart – grow bigger. Motherhood is…the best. The best. That is what motherhood is to me.

Follow Our Adventure By Jeanne-Marie WilliaMs

P

rompted by my own childhood memories of picking

berries in the summer with my mother and grandmother, I thought it would be nice to take Gabriel berry-picking so he could have his own similar memories. I was pleased to find Frog Eye Farm in Knoxville, MD, approximately 40 minutes southeast of Hagerstown, and at the end of July, we were at the tail-end of blueberry season, which typically begins in June. Armed with a bowl, hats, and stomachs full of breakfast, we took a lovely drive through Boonsoboro and Rohrersville, an area of farmland and sprawling homes, nestled between tree-covered hills. Our last turn took us over a one-lane bridge to follow a narrow, rutted and rocky private lane back to the farm. It was manageable in my sedan, but an SUV might have handled it more gracefully. At the very end of the lane, past a pond, and up a hill, we found the parking and a stand to check in before picking the fruit. The two friendly young ladies working at the stand weighed our bowl and offered us picking baskets, as well as free water and organic, essential-oil bug spray. Widebrimmed straw hats were also available to borrow. They mentioned that Frog Eye is a pesticide-free farm, so we were welcome to eat as many berries as we wanted; in fact, with many varieties of blueberries throughout the farm, the staff encourages visitors to sample from each bush before picking to ensure the variety is one each customer enjoys. I was very thankful that we visited early in the day and that the sky was overcast as it protected us from overheating and a glaring sun. There is not a lot of shade in the blueberry rows, and we were plenty sticky from the humidity. Additionally, we had to accept that we were going to be swarmed by gnat clouds the entire time we picked, and turning into gnat-fighting ninjas was futile and only going make us stickier. Since it was close to the end of the season, the south patch farthest down the hill was considered the fullest, and other bushes that were pretty full were marked with flags. We had no problem finding a lot of berries to sample and pick, and we made friends with other customers, shouting comments across the rows such as, “The bushes over here are loaded!” and, “These ones are extra sweet!” At first Gabriel was hesitant to sample and eat the berries he picked off the bushes. He is used to me washing and washing grocery store fruit of dubious origin before letting him eat it. But once he saw me enjoying the fruit, it did not take him long to join in, and before the trip was over, I caught him nibbling berries straight off the ends of the branches! Looking at me with a silly grin, www.childguidemagazine.com

he explained, “They are just so good.” And I understood. They have that straight from the farm fresh taste that you do not get when you purchase blueberries at the grocery store. Honestly, I was not sure how Gabriel would handle the experience of actually picking and accumulating a sizable bowl of berries. Sometimes, he tires quickly of an activity, especially when he is sticky and the bugs are up his nose and in his ears. I was pleasantly surprised to see him really enjoy picking the berries, occasionally exclaiming over his latest find. “Mommy! I found some big, fat dark ones over here!” he yelled when he wanted to guide me to what he perceived as a superior plant. It was such a relaxed, safe environment where he could run up and down the blueberry rows to burn off energy. At one point, I was making the final descent to the bottom of the south patch, and he had gone on ahead of me and discovered that any loud noise he made echoed over the grass and through the forest that bordered the blueberry farm. I think he thought he was making bird noises, but he sounded more like a wounded howler monkey. Once we had picked until our bowl and stomachs were nice and full of berries, we made our way back up the hill from the south patch to have our haul weighed. I was glad they did not weigh me and Gabriel. At just under three pounds in our bowl, we had picked almost eleven dollars of berries. We settled up, returned our basket, took some more bottled water, and made our way back to the car. I removed my hat from my sweat-drenched hair and an insect flew out. My guess is he was relieved to escape my damp head. Gabriel and I journeyed home, snacking on fresh berries all the way. Once the berries made it into the house, Gabriel washed them and sorted them to remove a few stray green berries, as well as some stems and leaves. The hot weather called for blueberry lemon sorbet, so Gabriel and I spent time mashing up some of our berries and combining them with sugar, lemon juice, and lemon zest before putting them into our ice cream maker. It was truly refreshing and delicious, and there was something special about eating a treat we made with berries picked fresh from the field together. Put Down Those Cell Phones!

I

magine reaching for your cell phone and realizing you forgot it. Minutes later, you check again, thinking you will use your phone to help you find it. Sound familiar? Not only are adults dependent on their cell phones, but increasingly younger and younger teens and preteens are using phones for everything from getting directions to social networking, finding answers to questions, surfing the Internet, playing video games, taking pictures, playing music and checking email and voice mail. This dependence is the subject of new research about a condition called “nomophobia”, or no-mobile-phone-phobia that produces feelings of great distress in some people when they do not have their phone. Summer may be the perfect time to wean your teen or preteen off of so much screen time and away from nomophobia. Outdoor activities, sports, camping, family vacation are all opportunities to connect with your kids and to have everyone put away their devices. For most families, this means you discuss your concerns and your kids have a chance to tell you what they think. Together it becomes possible to build consensus since media has become a central part of everyone’s lives. Statistics show that almost 98 percent of children live in a home with some type of mobile device, and 95 percent of the devices are smart phones. What does it look like if your teen is developing nomophobia? There can be changes in mood, use can interfere with daily life, feelings of intense desire or irresistible need can develop and with it comes a loss of interest in regular daily activities, even when that means lots of negative problems. There is usually an increase in family conflicts as well if the youngster constantly checks their phone. Dr. Ana Radovic is an Adolescent and Young Adult Medicine physician at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC. She was quoted in an interview explaining nomophobia this past December. She said, “Some people have talked about the internet and deviceuse as having similar addictive properties as things like alcohol and drug use, where if you don’t use it, you feel like you’re in withdrawal.” In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) for years has been issuing guidelines for children’s use of media and technology because of how it can affect learning and development in children of all ages. Research clearly shows that the brain reacts to the cell phone as if it were a drug. Studies have revealed that the ringing of the phone or the alert of a new text message causes the brain to release dopamine, something its developers knew all along. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter in the brain that controls human reward and pleasure centers. It also helps regulate emotional responses and helps us recognize rewards while encouraging us to seek them out. Understanding this biological component to cell phone use, parents may be able to better create limits before a problem develops. So this summer put down your phone, increase outdoor activities and engage directly with your children, it is healthier for everyone. She lives with her family in Staunton, VA where they also run Geezer Farm, a small farm that produces organically-grown fruits and vegetables to sell at the Staunton Farmers Market.

Top 10 Reasons You Should Send Your Kid to Summer Camp BY

F

BRIAN PRESLEY

or most people, summer camp is just something they did for a couple of weeks as a kid but for many it was much more than that. As someone who has experienced summer camp as both a camper and a counselor, I can tell you that it will not only give the parents a rest but can also change a kid’s life for the better. Summer camp gave me the confidence to be a stay-at-home dad and to self-publish a book based on the games and activities that filled my summers. A website was created to promote the book but What To Do With The Kids is now a big part of my professional life and reaches people from around the world. Summer camp was a great experience for me as a kid growing up in a government town and has created some life-long friends and memories. With that in mind, here are my top 10 reasons why you should send your kid to summer camp:

1. It gets them out of town

For kids living in a city, there aren’t many parks and the parks that are there are not very big and are usually crowded. If you’re lucky there’s a swimming pool or splash pad nearby and for those living in a house, the backyard can get boring and if you live in a new house, chances are your backyard is the size of a postage stamp. Kids in smaller towns can also get bored with the limited amount of activities available. Most summer camps are located outside cities and surrounded by trees near lakes or rivers. The air is cleaner and the noise is all natural. It’s a nice change for kids whose only exposure to wildlife is squirrels, pigeons and maybe the odd rat.

2. It gets them away from their family

Yes you love them, and the kids love you too and it may sound cruel but everyone can use a break at least once. Being away from home can also give kids an appreciation of what they have.

3. It gives them a sense of independence

For most kids, this will be the first time they travel anywhere without their

Page 18

May/June 2018

parents and that can be exciting for them. There will be rules to follow but it’s different when mom and dad aren’t around. They’ll be with other kids and chances are the counselors are not that much older since they are most likely high school or college age, so it won’t feel like they’re at home with their parents. For many kids it’s like being paroled from the routine of home and school.

4. It exposes them to different people

Most summer camps attract kids of different races, religions and economic standing from different parts of your city and even from different cities all together. It provides an opportunity to meet and discover other kids regardless of what their background is, what school they go to and where they’re from.

5. They can be themselves

At school and with their friends, a lot of kids can feel the pressure of acting like everyone else but a good camp program lets kids be themselves. They can be who they are and the only acting they’ll have to worry about is during the campfire skit!

6. They can learn new skills

The most important thing I ever learned at summer camp was to swim and that’s a skill that every kid should learn. Learning to swim allowed me to learn other skills such as canoeing, a bit of sailing and how to keep safe near water. The field sports program that I ran as a counselor introduced kids to sports that they may not have had a chance to learn at home such as volleyball, basketball, badminton and softball just

Child Guide

to name a few. For many, it was the first time they ever got to play and learn about a different sport. One of the more popular areas of a summer camp program is the crafts. Some camps still make the traditional key chain and bracelet but a lot of programs teach drawing, painting and sculpting that they may not get to try at home or would want to admit to be interested in to their friends. For a lot of kids, it’s a chance to discover their artistic abilities.

7. Learn life skills

Life skills are something that many kids learn without realizing it. Simple daily procedures such as cleaning their cabin or tent, making their bed, setting the dining table for a meal and cleaning up afterwards are habits that can carry on after they leave camp. The kids will learn teamwork and cooperation since they’ll be participating in a group or as “a cabin.” The “all for one and one for all” philosophy works wonders at summer camp and can help make your kids become more confident and out-going. They may also pick up a few good habits as well. A number of parents have told me that their kids would start helping to clear the table after meals and make their beds, at least for a little while.

8. It gets them active

Summer camp is filled with activities that involve running, swimming, hiking and of course playing. There are also times in the day where kids can just relax but the sign of a good camp experience is when the kids are tired but happy at the end of the day.

Top 10 Reasons You Should Send Your Kid to Summer Camp cont from pg 18 9. Everything is low tech

The majority of summer camps have a “no electronics” policy that may be harsh for some kids but is a great way to help them realize that they can live without it for a little while. If the kids ask, tell them that all camp activities are in “real-time” and are “interactive.” There is no “delete” or “return” button so they may have to try doing something again and again. Announcements are made in the dining hall live and in person. There are no texts, emails or Snapchats so messages are passed on to each other by actually speaking to another person. The only hi-tech item they should have is a flashlight.

10. It creates memories

As a camper and as a counselor, I learned a lot of new skills and a lot about myself and others at summer camp. There are people that I can picture exactly how they looked over 30 years ago and moments that have helped make me who I am today. It’s great to meet up with old friends and a real treat to be recognized by a former camper who can recall a fun moment so many years ago. It’s also quite special when these campers are now adults, speak fondly of their time at camp and a gives me a great feeling of knowing that I was a part of it. There are a lot of private camps and camps that are operated by churches or non-profit groups who can help you send your kids regardless of your financial situation. As a camper, my fees were subsidized so my parents could afford to send me but when I was up there, I was just one of the kids. Specialty camps are very popular and day camps in the city are fun but getting out of town and going to a traditional summer camp is an experience that every kid should have once. They may not come back with all their socks and towels but they will have memories that can last a lifetime.

Brian Presley is a former camper, counselor and program director at Camp Minwassin located near Eganville, Ontario. He is also a semiretired stay-at-home dad and the owner of whattodowiththekids.com, the website that adults go to when they want to know what to do with the kids. Other articles about summer camps can be found at www.whattodowiththekids.com.
