Living Healthier Play is the perfect gift idea
A
BY
s the holidays approach and relatives ask about appropriate gifts, parents should suggest ideas that promote play for their children. A recently released article in the journal of Pediatrics featured what the American Academy pf Pediatricians (AAP) calls “a prescription for play”, encouragement to let children play as a way to reduce stress, promote social skills and improve learning and cognitive growth. In fact, this is not the first time the AAP has issued a call to play. In 2006 and again in 2012, Dr. Ken Ginsburg wrote about the importance of play in promoting healthy child development and maintaining strong parent and child bonds. Ginsburg noted many factors have reduced play in children’s lives including hectic lifestyles, changes in family structure, worries about outdoor safety and increasing access to mobile devices. Statistics show 98 percent of children under the age of 8 now have access to a mobile device at home and spend triple the time on electronics. Between 2013 and 2017 young kids went from 15 to 48 minutes per day. While that might not seem like a lot of time, especially given the time adults are spending on their devices, it still keeps children from playing with others. Studies have now shown that just 2 hours a day with play toys or other objects, not electronics, can improve brain density and efficiency. Another study showed that 3-to-4 year olds who were engaged in active play showed improved abilities during stressful transitions. Known as “learning to learn skills,” memory, attention, impulse control and flexibility are all part of play. Research shows academic skills like language, STEM (science, technology, engineering and
S HARON Z OUMBARIS
mathematics) are also improved with guided play. Play for infants is all about exploration and using the five senses. Toddlers discover function and like to stack and build. This is also when pretend play begins. Preschoolers, use toys and other objects for their intended purpose, yet also will imagine a world of other possibilities for them, expanding on the pretend play. By elementary school age children are mastering skills like catching and throwing using both large and fine motor skills. Toys are excellent tools to help kids develop, and parents can nurture that growth by making sure they have time to play. Kenneth Rubin, a professor of human development at the University of Maryland, and his colleagues, say play should be “intrinsically motivated,” rather than imposed by parents; which means it should be fun, engaging and the child should make the rules. Rubin has been writing about the importance of play in early childhood for decades. Many of his over 300 publications and articles have by coauthored by colleagues on five continents. He and other researchers continue to study this important topic. They have identified several categories of play including physical, constructive, imaginative, dramatic, and games with rules. All types help children develop physically, socially, emotionally and cognitively. So think toys, fun and play for gifts this holiday season. Conscious Parenting: An Open Dialogue to Raise Aware Children BY
I
J EANNE-MARIE W ILLIAMS
recently had the opportunity to interview Katarina Wallentin, author of Clara and the Climate Changer, a book Gabriel and I enjoyed, in which spirited 9-yearold Clara takes charge and with a never-give-up attitude obtains the attention of world leaders and navigates a solution for climate change. Ms. Wallentin was gracious to answer my questions about conscious parenting and having open discussions with our children about any topic. So what is conscious parenting? I had heard the term before, and Ms. Wallentin explained, “Conscious parenting is about constantly questioning, including everything

and judging nothing…I am choosing to be an explorative parent. A parent who has chosen not to buy any of the available howto-parent-perfectly packages and instead is willing to get it completely wrong at times... What if that is actually one of the greatest gifts you could give your child – showing them that it is ok not to be perfect? It’s ok to make mistakes and get things wrong, because it’s always possible to choose again.” Understanding that, why is it so critical to be a conscious parent at this time? “We’re living in a reality that changes faster than ever. To be able to navigate it, we require a way of functioning that can keep up –
Child Guide
and consciousness is the fastest course-corrector I know… Consciousness allows you to choose, and then choose again in the next ten seconds. It doesn’t require you to stick with, or defend, the direction you’ve originally taken. It has no point of view of your new choice, or judgement of your previous choice – as long as the choices are based on the awareness and information you have available at the time… The way I see it, we can’t change the world if we hold onto what once was or keep judging things as right or wrong. The world is much bigger, much more complex and much more wondrous that that.”
www.childguidemagazine.com
m
I knew implementing conscious parenting would be a lifelong process, but I was not sure where a parent would begin. “There is no right way of being a conscious parent… I would suggest starting with letting go of everything you’ve bought as right and wrong about parenting, from relatives, friends, books, magazines and TV… For me, this is when my parenting auto-pilot finally shut off; when I stopped taking on everyone else’s point of view and started to ask questions to find out what actually worked for me and my daughter… You have to be willing to be wrong. As parents, we really want to do everything right. We want to be good parents. In fact, many of us want to be ‘perfect’ parents. The only way to truly implement conscious parenting is to stop judging yourself for not getting everything right. If you have to judge everything you say, do or choose when it comes to your children and family, you cannot be in the question. You’re too busy making sure that you don’t make the wrong choice!” Conscious parenting and engaging children in open discussions leads to children who are aware. In Clara and the Climate Changer, we see Clara as a youngster with a heightened level of consciousness and awareness. During her journey, when she begins her mission to change the world,
“…she picks up the package with the climate-changer from the ground, [and] at that moment, when she realizes that she is the one that has to do this, that no one else will, she becomes totally present, and her awareness peaks. She now knows exactly what she needs to say and do to be the catalyst of change required for any person, or in any moment…” Using her awareness, Clara goes on to enable everyone she meets to become a change agent. That is not to say that Clara does not meet with opposition in the book. Clara encounters an antagonist who is referred to as the “grumpy lady.” I asked Ms. Wallentin about how we can use Clara’s interactions with this character as an example to teach our own children about managing negativity. Ms. Wallentin explained, “Well, what Clara does in the book can work really well to navigate any grumpy and negative person. Clara basically notices that the lady is grumpy. However, she doesn’t do anything with it, resist or react, align, or agree. Even more importantly, she doesn’t try to change the grumpy lady, or make her happy. That is not her job…Her job is to keep moving, inspire the world and get the climate-changer to the highest point in the city. Her engagement is more powerful than the grumpiness, and from my experience, that is true in real life as well…” This really resonated with
me. For my own part, I have spent way too much time trying to placate others or smooth over tense situations. I love the reminder that it is not my problem to solve. In the case of Clara, at the end of the story, even the “grumpy lady” reaches back into her memory and explores new possibilities. But even if she had not, it was not Clara’s responsibility to lead her to that point. So many parents I know struggle with feeling a need to compete, compare, or measure up against other parents; this wears on them and leads to self-doubt and negativity. Perhaps if we spent more time being conscious and less time judging, including ourselves, parenting would feel a bit easier. “It is a bit strange, and to live a fully conscious life, one of key steps, in my point of view, is the willingness to receive everything, and judge nothing… It is also important to know from the start; you will never ‘get there.’ Parenting is a life-long journey – and an exciting and rewarding one at that!” Jeanne-Marie Williams is an analyst and a single mom who delights in homeschooling her son and taking him on adventures. A Sweet Adventure:
Making Gingerbread Houses by Jeanne-marie
Williams
had always loved the idea of building a gingerbread house with Gabriel, but I felt a little intimidated by trying to construct one. Attempts at gingerbread house building during my youth led to the creation of what my sister and mother and I lovingly remember as the highly-ornamented outhouse. So when I saw that Desert Rose CafĂŠ and Sweet Shoppe in Williamsport offered gingerbread house decorating, I thought Gabriel and I would have better success completing the tradition under professional supervision. We found some friends who were willing to join us in this endeavor and contacted Desert Rose to reserve two gingerbread houses. Thankfully, when we arrived at the

shop, the houses were constructed and only needed decorating; it had been the actual construction of the house that made me nervous, but I felt we could effectively decorate an assembled house. The staff at Desert Rose welcomed us and directed us to a table large enough for our party. They asked the kids to go to the front of the shop and select their gingerbread houses. Gabriel was confused by the labels in the empty, seasonally-used ice cream case where the houses were stored and asked for a root beer-flavored house. The employees looked confused, and I explained to Gabriel that all of the houses were the same flavor and he just needed to select the one that he liked the way it looked. Having done so, the staff carried our houses to our table and directed the kids to get paper plates to load up with candy, toppings, sprinkles, and edible glitter. With plates heaped with sweet decorations, the kids made their way back to our table where an employee handed them piping bags of icing with wide and narrow tips for decorating the houses and gave us all an overview of successful decorating. She reminded us to squeeze the piping bags from the top end instead of the middle, so that the icing would not blow out the end of the bags, and she also explained that if we loaded the roof too heavily with candy, the house would collapse. She encouraged the kids to be creative and decorate however they wished and said the only rule was that they were not to put the icing tips into their mouths. We put our hearts into decorating. Gabriel found the piping bag a little tricky to maneuver, so I did most of the piping at his direction, and told him I would be happy to help him fulfill his artistic vision. We found that if the narrow-tipped bag sat unused for too long, the icing would harden at the end making it difficult to use, so it was good to use it every few minutes to make sure it would not clog up. Gabriel placed candies in patterns he found pleasing using gummy circles for round windows and making gumdrop bushes, while his friends, Corrina and Jillian, decorated a house complete with Christmas lights and a doorbell. Gabriel ate and ate candy the whole time we decorated to the point where I had to ask him to slow down for fear of making himself ill, and I asked him to stop licking the decorations on his house. He wanted to sample all of the various sprinkles and candies, and he announced delightedly that the gumdrops were soft and fresh and that he liked the things that looked like red M&M’s ™ but were spicy. It turned out he was talking about cinnamon Red Hots. Gabriel also piped icing onto his decoration plate to make a candy dip and swirled gumdrops and M&M’s through it. The employees visited with us regularly to offer pointers and encouragement, and they also brought plates of warm, freshly baked chocolate chip cookies and cups of milk or cocoa with marshmallows for the kids and coffee for the adults; one of the employees even baked a handful of gluten-free cookies for Gabriel when she found out he could not eat the cookies or the house he was decorating. We also got to sample a gingerbread house that had unfortunately collapsed when another young fellow had too heavily decorated the roof. The gingerbread was so soft and flavorful with a fresh, cake-like consistency instead of the hard, thinwww.childguidemagazine.com

walled kind you buy in stores that make highlyornamented outhouses. When the kids felt that their masterpieces were complete, we took some pictures, and the employees very kindly boxed up the houses in roomy, sturdy boxes for transport; they even bagged up and sent home the unused candy the kids had taken and not worked into their houses. Gingerbread man cookies were also available for decoration, but we decided decorating a house was plenty for one day and settled up to go have lunch across the street at the Desert Rose Café. Desert Rose offers this event annually; in fact, they also have 3-D turkey cookie decorating in November, so you could decorate items two months in a row if you wanted. If you do go to Desert Rose, there are a few pointers to keep in mind. It is important to call the café and reserve your spot at a scheduled time in advance, and spaces do fill up. Particularly for the houses, the employees need to know how many to have available and assembled for decorating. Additionally, make sure you have some coins handy for parking meters, as there does not appear to be any off-street parking. Lastly, lunch at the café was a nice way to finish the adventure with reasonably priced food and a variety of options including vegetarian and gluten-free offerings.
