McColl Family Theatre I March 3 & 4, 2023

From the Board President

Welcome to the 75th year of the Children’s Theatre of Charlotte! After the last two years, we are excited to have you in attendance for our performances. We are committed to bringing the community together and fostering an environment of love and inclusiveness for all.

For our 75th season, we have selected what we believe to be some of the best musicals and plays for you to see. We are excited to start the season with the musical, Annie. It would not be Christmas at CTC without The Best Christmas Pageant Ever: The Musical which is an original to the Theatre. And we will finish the season in May with Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! The Musical! As part of The Kindness Project, we are bringing back A Sick Day for Amos McGee. If you are not familiar with The Kindness Project, it was started in 2017 as a means of commissioning original plays whose focus is on bringing kindness to others. Be sure to check out our website (ctcharlotte.org) to see what else is showing on our stages this season.

I am honored to serve as chair of the Board of Directors for this season. As a child, I grew up going to the Children’s Theatre when it was on Morehead Street. It helped fuel my love of the theatre. Now, it is an honor to serve as chair of the Board of Directors. If you love coming to the theatre and wish to get involved further, we have plenty of opportunities including ushering at our performances, helping to plan Celebrate! which is our annual fundraiser, or serving on our Board of Directors.

DID YOU KNOW?

“Kamalenya” means “for children” in Bamana, the language of Mali.

The title of the show embraces this and means “the story of Sunjata for children”.

10

About the show

Traditional music, costumes, and scenery whisk you away to a village compound where the jelimuso (storyteller) guides them to 13th century Mali.

The ancient Mali Empire spanned several countries in Western Africa from c.1230 to c.1600

The Sunjata epic is based on the real-life 13th century ruler who brought order to the largest empire the continent of Africa ever saw, the Mali Empire. African jeli (storytellers) from Mandé have passed the tradition of this Manden epic through oral tradition for the past seven centuries.

Today, the story and the people whose ancestors it celebrates, are as alive as ever. This production brings the tradition and majesty of this ancient story and storytelling tradition to many Americans for the first time.

Balla Kouyaté – Djeli from Mali: Balla Kouyaté is considered a balafon virtuoso. Born in Mali, he was raised in the Djeli tradition, learning from his father at the age of six. He performed for the first time in Bamako, Mali at Palais de la Culture with Malian singer Sanignai Kouyaté. In 1994, he

13

Meet the Company

was a member of the renowned Ensemble Nationale du Mali. By 1997 he was granted the opportunity to play with singer Ami Koïta at an international conference, which brought together 27 African presidents. Balla and his music have been featured at the Homegrown Festival at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Santa Fe Folk Art Market, the Lowell Folk Festival and the Chicago World Music Festival. Balla’s superior musicianship has been featured on at least 45 albums, including Yo-Yo Ma’s latest CD, Songs of Joy and Peace, Angelique Kidjo’s Oyo and Vusi Mahlasela’s Say Africa. In 2010 Balla was honored with the Massachusetts Artist Fellowship in the Traditional Arts and his work has been recorded for the Library of Congress. Last year he began teaching his six-year old son the art of playing Djeli music on the balafon with the support of a Massachusetts Cultural Council Apprenticeship grant. Balla has worked extensively with African artists playing venues such as Lincoln Center Outdoor Festival, Symphony Space, Carnegie Hall and festivals around the country, touring with Sekouba Bambino Diabaté, Mah Kouyaté, Kerfala Kanté, Babani Koné and Oumou Dioubaté. His collaborations with a variety of American, European and Middle Eastern artists brought the need for innovation - to expand the tonal possibilities of the balafon. He thus created a chromatic instrument, providing him with more notes, including some quarter tones. Balla is currently working on a forthcoming album featuring members of his family. This is his twelfth year collaborating with Christopher Parks and the SUNJATA KAMALENYA project.

Kofi Osei Williams As Chief Executive Officer of Asase Yaa Entertainment Group, LLC, Kofi Osei Williams has ascended to a position of tremendous influence on African Dance, Music and Culture in Brooklyn, New York where he also oversees the creative and business direction of the affiliated Asase Yaa African-American Dance Theater, Asase Yaa School of the Arts, Asase Yaa Children’s Arts Camp and the non-profit Asase Yaa Cultural Arts Foundation. Beginning as a drummer, Williams scaled the ranks as a student, historian, touring performer, educator, administrator and company co-founder. He has worked with artists ranging from jazz greats Pharaoh Sanders and Dianne Reeves, new age guru Paul Winters to Djembe Drum innovator M’Bemba Bangoura, soul chanteuse Erykah Badu and conscious hip hop star Talib Kweli. Detailing his role as CEO with Asase Yaa, Williams states, “I develop our programs, curriculum and run most of our day-today operations. I also remain a musician for the dance theater and the summer camp. One of our ongoing core missions has been to bring people from Broadway and professional companies into the neighborhood to teach at affordable prices so kids can benefit and flourish in the arts.” This year, Kofi wrote the play ‘The HBCU Show’ for their Summer Camp, which teaches the value of historical black colleges and the culture behind them.

“There are so many things about CDS that we are thankful for. The smiles on our children’s face each day says it all. They look forward to going to school. They love their teachers and friends. We appreciate the high academic standards. We love that our children’s intellect is challenged and their talents are cultivated. Above all, we are so incredibly thankful that the Christian values which are so important to our family are infused in every aspect of life here.”
