Note From the Education Director

Only one word comes to mind as we find ourselves at OnStage weekend 2022 and that word is grateful. None of us were sure what the last two years would bring, but having students in rehearsal rooms and back on stage performing in plays and musicals has caused us to breathe a collective sigh of relief. Our toes are once more tapping, young voices are once more singing, and the collective and palpable experience of live theatre has once more filled our theatre spaces. More importantly, we have been able to step back into community. Many of these students are walking onto a stage for the first time ever, while others are seasoned performers who have worked alongside professional actors on our Mainstage. We don’t take that opportunity for mentorship for granted. So let this weekend be one of celebration! We celebrate our seniors who are moving out into the world. We celebrate our students who continue to grow and learn as they train in our School of Theatre Training and Conservatory programs, we celebrate those brave souls who are stepping onto stage for the first time, and we celebrate the dedicated directing and creative teams who have given of their time and talents to make this amazing weekend happen. How refreshing to have this place that celebrates young people, their love for theatre, and all of the life lessons that this art form teaches them. We are grateful for Children’s Theatre of Charlotte, and that you are a part of our theatre family. Michelle Long, Director of Education 2

Show Descriptions 42nd Street: Youth Edition At the height of the Great Depression, aspiring chorus girl Peggy Sawyer comes to the big city from Allentown, PA, and soon lands her first big job in the ensemble of a glitzy new Broadway show. But just before opening night, the leading lady breaks her ankle. Will Peggy be able to step in and become a star? The score is chock-full of Broadway standards, including “You’re Getting To Be A Habit With Me,” “Dames,” “We’re In the Money,” “Lullaby of Broadway,” “Shuffle Off to Buffalo” and “Forty-Second Street.” Captain Louie Jr Louie has just moved to a new town and is nervous about making new friends. Alone in his room, he takes flight in his imagination, back to his old neighborhood, where he spends Halloween with his colorful crew of chums. Over the course of trick-or-treating and being introduced to the new kid in that neighborhood, Louie discovers that making new friends is nothing to be afraid of. Still Life with Iris Set in Nocturno, “Still Life With Iris” chronicles a young girl’s quest to regain her memory and with it her home. With the help of the incredible people she meets along the way, Iris’ crusade recovers more than her past. She succeeds in finding herself: the power of faith and the courage of persistence. Maricela de la Luz Lights the World A few days before Christmas, as Maricela de la Luz and her brother Riccardo come out of a San Diego mall, the world suddenly changes. It starts off slowly. First it’s the unexplainable snowfall. Then it’s all the adults disappearing. Then it’s the polar bear that appears out of nowhere, followed by the penguins. On the radio the governor of California is urging everyone not to panic. Realizing the safest place to be is home, the kids decide to hit the road, but instead find themselves on a magical and unusual journey where they learn the meaning of heroism, sacrifice, and commitment as they work together to save the world.
