WATER ...

S

Irrigation is one of Agrinet’s focus areas and there fore this issue of InFocus is dedicated to the irrigation products and services Agrinet offers. On page 15 we in troduce the Irrigation Department and it’s very capable manager, Coenie Maritz. Coenie promises that Agrinet does not only sell irrigation products, but wants to help clients find solutions with the most beneficial water con sumption in mind, and in the most economical way. We introduce some of the available tools and tech nologies that will increase efficiency in irrigation – from the humble washer to high-tech electronic irrigation management systems.

TRUCKLOADS OF BRANDS Making brands even more visible nationally – that was the motivation behind Agrinet’s latest innovation. “Our fleet of delivery trucks will be sporting oversized advertisements of our ma jor brands, thus creating top of mind awareness of these brands among consumers,” said Alichia Mentz, Marketing Manager at Agrinet. The impact of these huge mobile advertisements will benefit all our retail clients by making consumers aware of the following brands: • Nexus – electrical, security and solar solutions • Kaufmann – outdoor range • Orbit – garden irrigation • Pascali • Speroni Look out for Agrinet’s new-look fleet of “Green Machines” all over South Africa.

BRINGING WATER TO THE RURALS The newly designed, low friction, JOOSTE hand pump can bring water relief to many desperate communities in drought stricken rural Africa. The JOOSTE hand pump requires less human power to operate, making it possible for children to also efficiently pump water. It is a robust and durable pump made predomi nately from galvanised steel making it a real low mainte nance appliance. The JOOSTE cylinder used in conjunction with the JOOSTE hand pump is made from durable stainless steel and polyurethane. A base plate completely seals the borehole, blocking entry from dust, impurities or even rodents. It also stops contaminants such as human or animal faecal matter from seeping in during flooding. A clamp system also prevents the main shaft from dropping down the borehole.

people living in Africa do not have access to safe drinking water. Contaminated water, dehydration, poor sanitation/ hygiene causes the deaths of 115 people every hour and at least one child under 5 years old dies in Africa every minute (UNICEF, UNDESA). These numbers can be significantly reduced by strategically in stalling JOOSTE Hand Pumps in water-scarce villages to provide communities with ac cess to purified, potable water for drinking and pressurized water for irrigation. Jooste Cylinder and Pump Co. (PTY) Ltd is also in the process of developing a hy brid solar-hand pump that can be operated by hand or solar power.

An automatic chlorine dispenser can be added to the JOOSTE hand pump to kill bacteria, E-coli and faecal coli forms that may be present in the water causing dysentery. The JOOSTE hand pump can lift water 10 meters above the surface from a depth of 60 meters. The JOOSTE Force hand pump is designed to discharge water into elevated tanks or to pump it uphill. It can also be used to pump water from rivers, streams and canals. The product is suitable for household and rural water supply and can even be used for small-scale crop irrigation. The newly listed range of Southpro plumbing fittings is now available from Agrinet. Since listing the Southpro range, the uptake has been very positive due to the obvious quality and value the products offer end-users. AGRINET STOOD OUT, AGAIN

A

t the 2016 E.S.T. Trade Shows, Agrinet received another win – First Prize – for their outstanding display. The Trade Shows were held during May in Johannesburg at Gallagher Estate, in Durban at the Moses Mabhida Sta dium and in the Western Cape at the Lord Charles Hotel. Each venue had excellent facilities and each show was well attended by Preferred Suppliers and Members alike. The objective behind the shows are to have suppli ers meet with members and exhibit their goods and for both members and suppliers to get to know one another and build up relationships to everyone’s advantage.

Exhibitors went all out to ensure that visitors to their stands were treated to ample information and supporting documentation. At the end prizes were issued to those displays that stood out from the rest. This was no mean task because the calls were close and many displays were just excellent. Nevertheless, Agrinet came out tops in Gauteng.

HAVE SOME BREW WITH MARIUS

In the previous edition of Infocus I introduced my sales management team and I trust that you’ve enjoyed reading more about these gentlemen’s personal side. As a rule, every team has a joker in it’s midst and my sales management team is not different in this regard. Carlo Bezuidenhout, Agrinet’s Category Management Manager is the joker in our team, and not only referring to the fact that he is a Stormer and Western Province supporter. Carlo is often called the impact player in our team, a genuine Player 23 …

MISTER CATEGORY MANAGEMENT

I

t’s needless to emphasize the importance of category man agement and the successful management and implemen tation of this science at both wholesale and retail levels. There are many theories and processes involved in category management throughout

the business world, but in my opinion success hugely depends on the actual bodies managing and implementing these various principals ac cording to their own relevant business environments and market places. Understanding the needs of both the retailer

and end-user, combined with tailor-made offerings at the store will optimise the buying experience, making the dif ference between success or failure. With more than 120 re vamps and new stores on his tally, Carlo has accumulated a lot of experience. He under stands the typical retail envi ronment especially with the Agrinet product offerings and their type of customer. Over the last three years Carlo and his team supported the sales strategy that moves us closer to our customers while pro viding support at retail level. This value added service not only strengthened business relationships, but also resulted in a number of success stories from our various customers’ businesses. Category management The basics of category man agement at retail level con sists of a floor plan according to actual scale and size of the shop and determining the category flow that suits the business best to optimize revenue. This is where Carlo’s expertise lies. Added to his ability to manage a revamp

or the design of a new store makes him the ideal project manager. He has done this with distinction during the last ten years I’ve had the privilege of experiencing with him. On a personal note, Carlo’s favourite dish is a traditional home cooked “skaapboud” and veggies. Now you know how to convince him to share his expertise and experience with you. He enjoys listening to Bruce Springsteen even though he was born in the RSA and not he USA. Carlo is very proud of his garden and I’ve never heard anyone with so much stories about his favourite, the locust tree. Carlo was captain of all the wine teams he represented in his rugby career, but more in teresting is his boxing career. In the prime of young adult hood he was the Griekwas’s junior middleweight cham pion, the KZN middleweight champion as well as the ISCOR middleweight champi on, to mention but a few. I will definitely have to count my words when dealing with his next performance review. Carlo’s merchandising team consist of Thulani Dhlamini and Amos Mashisi and his

BREW WITH MARIUS ... space planner, Doné van der Westhuizen. Together they form a brilliant team which not only contributes to Agrinet’s success, but have made a difference in a number of Agri net’s customers’ lives – thanks gents, for your loyal and hard work to date! I invite all our readers to en quire about Agrinet’s category management services and the criteria to qualify for these services. Kindly forward your enquiry to Geneveve Eloff at our office. We will gladly make contact to discuss your needs. (genevevee@agrinet.co.za). At the time of writing my article it was only days before the municipal elections, a tornado just swirled through the eastern part of Ekuhurleni, my favourite Lions team just won the semi-final against the

Highlanders – and they say life is boring, really? On this note I thought it would be fitting to share Brian Parsley, a well-known motiva tional speaker and business consultant’s view regarding his subject on “Living with Intent”. We all have choices in life. Sometimes we make good choices and at other times we drop the ball. But we can all reduce the number of mistakes, by basing choices on concious decisions, rather than on the defaults of life. You can choose whether to succumb to whatever happens to you, or to take an active role in directing your life. Aren’t their greater benefits in living life by your own conscious design? After all, if you don’t have a plan or a purpose for your life, the events you experience or the people sur-

rounding you, will provide one for you and life will slip away from you and you’ll fall into “autopilot” mode. Being intentional means taking control of your life. You determine how you spend your time, energy and resources. Purpose gives meaning to your life – and it’s never too late to find that purpose. Whatever decision you make, be determined to act. Then you’ll discover purpose in your existence and happiness within your heart. And then you will be able to live with intent. Just some food for thought. I wish to conclude by wish ing Wollie Wolmarans all of the best with the new chapter in his career after Wollie decided to resign after 17 years of service with Agrinet. Given his long service and commitment towards Agrinet, his presence

12

and experience will definitely be missed. I also wish to take this opportunity to thank Wol lie on behalf of Agrinet for his dedication and the manner in which he always took owner ship of his responsibilities. We wish Wollie good luck and suc cess with his future career and trust that he will make a huge success of it. We are at the start of yet another peak retail season, and therefore, I wish all our customers and Agrinet staff all of the best during this period. Despite all the external factors influencing the macro environment, remember to live with intent and act upon your purpose. Agrinet will support you in this journey. Go Lions, until next time – cheers!

However, Rhodes University Ecologist, Professor Jay O’Keefe says that, like most places in the world, much of South Africa’s irrigation remains inefficient. “You could produce the same amount of food with much less water,” O’Keefe says, “but you’ve got to put a lot of initial investment into it.” Tools available to increase efficiency in agriculture range from irrigation technologies – switching from wasteful flood irrigation systems to micro jet, and drip irrigation – to satellite

technology, which enables farmers to better predict yields. Irrigation systems are installed to apply desired amounts of water, at desired application rate, at the right time, with the most beneficial water consumption in mind, and in the most economical way. Because water-use in the agricultural sector is the high est of all water-use sectors in South Africa, it is imperative that efficiency be increased whilst consumption is de creased, making more water available for other users.

Sustainable irrigation projects are aimed to deliver water from the source to the field in the most efficient and effective way. Implications of decisions made have to be considered in all phases of development and man agement of the crop, whilst taking into account technical, economical and environmen tal issues. Agrinet can assist retailers with irrigation clients in pro curement of the bill of mate rial, warehousing the different components until everything is ready for delivery directly to the client’s farm.

BESPROEIING | IRRIGATION

GETTING TECHNICAL IN THE FIELD Agrinet boasts two technical irrigation consul tants, based in the Cape. Renier van der Merwe and Eduan Booysen both have the experience and knowledge to serve Agrinet clients.

RENIER VAN DER MERWE Renier is very passionate about irrigation, “Why else would I be in this industry?” says Renier. He has a lot of experience in the irrigation industry – picked up most during his years as product manager for Afgri in Bronk horstspruit. He was also the product manager for hard ware. Renier has more than 20 years experience in pump selection and selling. With his experience he can help farmers to select the cor rect total solution for their needs on the farm, from choosing the correct pump to assembling all the other necessary parts. Renier is from a co-operative back ground and also finished the SABI Introductory Irrigation Design Course. Contact Renier: (021) 959 5429 reniervdm@agrinet.co.za

EDUAN BOOYSEN Eduan has good knowledge of pump selection and lots of experience from working in the field on projects. “I am solution-driven and pride myself on my customer’s satisfaction,” says Eduan. But that is not all, Eduan also has good knowledge of stock taking, stock movements and ordering, receiving and dispatch pro cedures that he picked up through the years. He has good knowledge of agricul tural equipment and is very comfortable with reading of irrigation designs or maps. He is also enrolled in a short course at Unisa: Introduction to Sales and Marketing and finished the SABI Introduc tory Irrigation Design Course last year.

Hierdie manne is daagliks

C B Wasters se volle reeks is by Agrinet beskikbaar.

NASTEC-WURMROTOR SOLARPOMP

Agrinet verskaf ’n keuse van drie grootes panele nl: • SOLAR PANEEL SD HV 120Wp VMP 37.2V IMP 3.26A • SOLAR PANEEL SD HV 180Wp VMP 36.5V IMP 4.93A • SOLAR PANEEL SD ENERSOL 250Wp VMP 30.83V IMP 8.11A 1. 4 Pk MultiPower 2. Wissel-/gelykstroom- skakelaar 3. Sonpanele 4. Watertenk 5. Vlotterklep 6. Kragopwekker

NASTEC-SENTRIFUGALE SOLARPOMP Die 4” sentrifugale solargedrewe dompelpomp (4HS MP) is ’n nuwe pompreeks, aangedryf deur ’n harsgevulde waterverkoelde motor met Kingsbury “thrust bearings”.

• Sonlig is noodsaaklik – bewolktheid sal watervoorsiening beïnvloed.

RAIN-JET GETS

TORRENTI VIR GEHALTE KOPERPRODUKTE

A MAKEOVER O As part of Agrinet’s drive towards owning and distributing market leading, differentiated and appealing brands, the micro irrigation product range, Rain-Jet, received a brand refresh recently. With the drought and water restrictions happening all over South Africa, public aware ness around water usage has become a bigger factor in irrigation purchases. “We are seeing a big shift towards, and greater interest in more water efficient products than before. Consumers now do more research on water effective solutions for their gardens, and micro irrigation is perfectly positioned for that,” says Marius Loubser, sales manager at Agrinet. Gardening is an activity equally shared between men and women. Although less women attempt the technical elements such as irrigation, they typically buy the prod ucts and have it installed. “The aim with the updated, modern branding was to make the products more visible on the shelf and to make the range more appealing to both female and male consumers alike. We’ve added only the most critical information on the header cards to make it easier for DIY’ers to select the correct products for their needs,” comments Alichia

INNOVATIVE PARTNER FROM DOWN SOUTH APEX IN SOUTH AFRICA

Apex Valves is a privately owned New Zealand company specialising in the design and manufacture of float valves for water reservoirs, tanks and troughs. Apex’s involvement with South Africa goes back nearly 20 years when they established a manufacturing company in the late 1990s in Centurion SA. The business grew and quickly became 100% owned and operated by South Africans who are still very close friends of Apex New Zealand. With local people develop ing a good reputation in the plumbing market in South Africa the way was paved to offer Apex Agricultural valves to the South African farming market. Apex trusted Agrinet

as their partner and believed that with Agrinet’s under standing of the local market and their great reputation, Apex would quickly become recognised as the leading trough valve supplier in South Africa. Apex’s vision for South Africa is to strengthen the relationship with Agrinet, and build a closer understanding of local farming. Apex is com mitted to having a presence at Agrinet tradeshows and exhibiting their innovative products.

AN INNOVATIVE APPROACH TO PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT A good example of the in novation coming from Apex is the new Xcess valve now available through Agrinet. The Xcess is a new valve developed from listening to farmer feedback and compil ing a wish-list of features for this valve without any restric tions – whether possible or not. The aim was to create the best valve on the market by a huge margin, offering unique features never seen before on any trough valve in the world. A camlock fitting was incor porated into the cap to allow a hose to be quickly con nected to the valve. This hose could be used for filling spray tanks, washing down equip ment, firefighting or cleaning out troughs. However, the main use of the connection in

NZ is to allow a feed of water to be taken from the Xcess valve to a portable trough which enables the farmer to a break feed or strip graze a part of a grazing area. A shut off pin was devel oped so that the flow from the Xcess valve can be shut off to facilitate trough clean ing or connection of the camlock fitting. The Xcess valve was de signed to be serviced without any tools. Traditionally the split pin and arm must be removed from a trough valve before servicing. On the Xcess valve, this is not necessary, allowing very quick and easy servicing. It can even be done with the valve still installed in the trough.

OTHER INNOVATIVE PRODUCTS BY APEX BIGBOY – Pump-fed large reservoirs, it allows for a single

VERSATILITY MAKES FLAP DISCS POPULAR Grinding Techniques (Pty) Ltd has launched a new range of flap discs – the Superflex Industrial range, and the Superflex Evolution range. Mounted directly onto standard angle grinders, flap discs are becoming increas ingly popular on account of their versatility. Both rough and intermediate grinding can be done with the same flap disc; they can remove

material and finish in one step, in many cases reducing the number of working processes – thus saving time as well as money. They give a rapid stock removal and a consist ent finish during the entire life of the product. Although the most popular sizes are made to suit 115 mm and 180/230 mm angle grinders, Grinding Techniques also manufactures these for 100 mm, 125 mm, and 150 mm machines. Superflex flap discs from Grinding Techniques are available in various grit sizes (P40, P60, P80, P120) to suit stock removal rates and finishes required, and in either a shape 27 (flat) or a shape 29 (angled) configuration to accommodate the customer’s

application. P60 is the most popular all-round grit size, as it combines rapid stock removal rates with good finish. Coarse grit P40 is normally used on aluminium and other soft and non-ferrous metals, wood, and some plastics. The finer grit sizes (P80 and P120) are used on tougher steels or where finer finishes are required. Made with technically superior Zirconium abrasive material, this new range of flap discs is suitable for use on stainless steel, mild steel, non-ferrous metals, wood, and certain plastics. They are excellent for de-rusting, paint removal, deburring, weld removal and weld seam blend ing, and sheet metal finishing.

32

Product code: HW2087024 The Superflex Industrial range is most suited for heavy industrial work, and is available in all grit sizes and shapes. The Superflex Evolution product is manufactured from similar high quality compo nents as the Industrial range, but it has been engineered to provide an extremely effective product at a very competitive price.

IF YOU HAVE GRASS … YOU NEED ROLUX NEW Agrinet has been appointed as the distributor of the Rolux range for selected customers in South Africa.

THE KREEPY KRAULY STORY

Think of a lawnmower brand and … it’s a good bet that Rolux will come to mind first. Actually, that’s not surprising as Rolux has been South Africa’s leading lawnmower brand since 1956. The distinctive orange and black machines have deservedly become the choice of gardeners, landscapers and groundsmen across the country. There are very few people who, when asked ‘think of a lawnmower advertisement’, will not sing to themselves ‘Rolux Magnum!’ and visualise explorer Dr Livingstone and a Rolux lawnmower cutting a swathe through the African grassland from Cape to Cairo as easy as saying ‘table-top smooth’. Mind you, it’s not just because of its advertising that Rolux is No. 1 year after year; there’s also quality of manufacture and range of choice of type of machine. There’s a Rolux for every type of lawn imaginable - from a small townhouse lawn to a sports-field and larger. Over the years, Rolux has earned a level of consumer trust that other products can only dream of. This is because they are manufactured to the very highest quality standards using the very finest materials. Rolux does the job… perfectly! Every time!

T

he story begins way back in 1951, when a penni less refugee, Ferdinand Chauvier, from the then Belgian Congo, brought his family to South Africa. Ferdi was a qualified hydraulics engineer, and had previously owned a hydraulic pump factory. Ferdi used his mechanical skills at a service station in Springs - (Gauteng). Daniel Chauvier - Ferdi’s son, grew up and began selling pool equipment and chemicals door to door. It soon became obvious that most pool owners disliked their pools, as a result of the laborious task of keeping them clean. Danny discussed the possibility of an automatic pool cleaner with his father, who soon

NEW The complete Kreepy Krauly range is now available from Agrinet.

35

put some ideas together, making use of his hydraulics engineering back ground. In 1974, the first machines were made from wood and rubber tub ing, which incidentally were melted together on the kitchen stove! Danny took these prototypes out to his clients, and most were extremely reluctant to part with them, once it had been demonstrated to them in their pool. It was obviously not very long before it became apparent that the “Kreepy Krauly” was a success story. By 1978 a sufficient number of clean ers had been sold to cover the costs of plastic injection moulding, and the first Kreepy Krauly’s, as we know them today, were rolled out. As technology has developed and advancements have been made over the years, the Kreepy Krauly has been improved on, so that the nuts and bolts of yesteryear have been replaced with clip-on, single piece moulded plastic parts. In fact, the patented design, with a few improve ments, is so solid, that it has essen tially remained the same for over 42 years!
