Welcome to The 3Bees S
Please mention 3Bees when responding to adverts
o here we are, with the very first edition of The 3Bees magazine and I am very excited to be bringing you a new monthly publication for all the parents and parents to be out there! The first job is to introduce myself; I am a working mum of two and life often feels like I am juggling far too many balls and I often have internal conflict about how our life is. It’s busy but I love it that way and for me, working makes me a better parent, however that’s not to say I don’t look at friends who have chosen to stay at home with rose tinted glasses too! I have the support of an amazing hands on husband, who you will hear from time to time in our Dad’s View, without him I think my sanity would have been lost a very long time ago. My children are fast approaching 4 and 2 and are a handful but in the best possible way. I am hoping through personal experience and drawing on the expertise of specialists we can all navigate the crazy journey of parenthood together. Each month you will be able to pick up a fresh copy of The 3Bees for regional news, inspiration and advice. We are always keen to hear your ideas too, so if there is a topic you feel we should cover then please get in touch via editor@the3bees.co.uk, you can also keep up to date with what is happening on our facebook page @the3Beesmagazine or instagarm @3beesmag, you will hopefully find lots of regular posts and info to help you through the month. In this issue we have got a motoring review of the Volvo V60, advice on fertility and ideas for the next birthday party. We explore the thrills and spills of theme parks, we have lots of fashion inspiration if you plan on hitting the beach this summer and we meet real life reader Sam who’s inspiring story shows how alternative therapies can help alongside modern medicine. Make sure you check out our competitions on page 48, as they say ‘you’ve got to be in it to win it’. There’s ticket giveaways, days out entries and food for your family dog to be won! If you run a business targeted at parents please feel free to email sales@the3bees. co.uk for help and guidance on advertising to parents in Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire and Rutland through 3Bees. We have some amazing packages and prices start from less than £45 per month! All that’s left for me to say is enjoy the issue. We would welcome any feedback and ideas on future issues, please either call 01775 640254 or email editor@the3bees.co.uk

Bile acid blood test could indicate risk of stillbirth Research, part funded by Tommy’s, has found a better way to measure the risk of stillbirth for women with a common liver disorder through a simple blood test. The discovery will help doctors identify the small number of women at most risk who require intervention to prevent stillbirth. This will allow the majority of women with intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy (ICP) who are at a low risk to carry on their pregnancy normally. The researchers estimate that implementing this test could prevent hundreds of women having unnecessary early deliveries. Jane Brewin, Chief Executive of Tommy’s said: Stillbirth devastates parents’ lives and Tommy’s believes that too many babies still die at full term. This study means that we can detect more otherwise healthy babies who are at risk of sudden death because of their mother’s liver condition. This study has the potential to save lives if practice is revised immediately and implemented nationally. Importantly it will prevent babies from being induced early, which carries a risk
of lifelong negative consequences for them, and prevent the distress and concern caused to parents who wrongly believe that their baby is at risk. ICP is a liver disorder affecting approximately 5,300 pregnancies annually in the UK – more than 14 every day. The condition causes build-up of bile acids in the blood, and symptoms include itching. It was previously thought that small increases in bile acid concentration are associated with higher risks of stillbirth. Pregnant women showing symptoms of ICP, therefore, are often offered early induction of labour at around 37 weeks in order to prevent stillbirth. To understand the link between ICP, bile acid levels and stillbirth, the authors analysed more than 170,000 pregnancies from 40 international studies. The work was funded by ICP Support, Tommy’s, Genesis Research Trust, Wellcome Trust and the NIHR. The results, published in The Lancet, show that the likelihood of stillbirth as a result of ICP is related to the concentration of bile acids in a pregnant woman’s blood. This can be determined by a simple blood test.

Celebrity designs for pushchair brands are nothing new, but Cosatto’s collaboration with Paloma Faith immediately sounded like a match made in multicoloured heaven. Both are bold, quirky, vibrant and unashamedly ‘Marmite’ - love ‘em or hate ‘em, they certainly make a statement about individuality and being happy to be different.

Have toddler Long sightseeing wanders, sizzling heat and evenings out and about can make a stroller a necessity on holiday, even for children who hardly ever use a pushchair at home. Luckily, there are plenty to choose from that are lightweight to carry and fold up small for the plane too. Here are some of our favourites...
BABYZEN YOYO+ FROM £389
The first pushchair to be accepted as cabin baggage (yes, it fits in the overhead locker!), the YOYO+ is designed for the next generation of jet-setters. It’s even available in Air France livery for an extra touch of globetrotting chic. A matching Newborn Pack gives a cosy cocooned space for the tiniest travellers to lie flat.
Cosatto Woosh, £199.95 Mountain Buggy Nano Duo £399
You won’t lose a Cosatto on holiday! The trademark bold, bright patterns certainly make these strollers stand out, so they’re perfect if you’ll be leaving them in the buggy parks at a theme park. The Woosh even comes with a bell to help part the crowds! What’s more this tinyfolding, lightweight pushchair is tested to carry up to 25kg - 10kg more than most.
8
3 Bees | May 2019
Need a stroller for two that isn’t an unwieldy beast to carry with you? At 9kg and folding almost flat, the Nano Duo is completely manageable and comes with a shoulder strap attached - so it can come with you to the beach and beyond, and your hands are still free for ice cream!
r, will travel Joie Pact, £150
Ickle Bubba Globe, from £199 Another one that folds up small and neatly with a strap so you can sling it over your shoulder. It’s stylish too, with an on-trend rose gold or gleaming chrome frame and grown-up fabric colours like khaki, grey and denim blue. For an extra £20 you also get a matching quilted seat liner and footmuff for exploring on colder days and every parent’s must-have accessory, a cup holder!
Great value for money, the Pact reclines to lie completely flat, making it suitable from newborn. It folds fast with one hand into a small, easy-totransport package and comes with a raincover (just in case) and a custom carry bag to make travelling even simpler.
ROMA CAPSULE 2 £149
Let’s face it, airports and excited or tired young children aren’t always a great mix! The Capsule 2 should make it as painless as possible, with a full recline for a comfortable nap, a deep basket for all those close-at-hand essentials, and the ability to fold down ridiculously small and light at the gate with a press of the button on the handle. It comes with raincover, insect net and travel bag included too.
All these travel strollers - and more - are available to buy from Pushchair Expert!

Hiring a village hall for a couple of hours is a sweet way to support your local community and can cost as little as £20. That’s handy to know if your little one is in Reception class at school, where there seems to be an unwritten rule that all their classmates get an invitation. Just remember to bring vast amounts of Party Rings and something to play music on, and you’re away! Kids love to run around a hall and play the traditional party games we all used to love. Pets In The Family The loyal, loving Labrador. A faithful canine companion who dozes beside your baby’s cot and walks enthusiastically alongside the pram? Or a moulting, mischief-making, messy, extra mouth to feed? It’s ok. We can’t all be dog people. Come to think of it, we can’t all be pet people for many different reasons; financial, not enough space, allergies, not at home all day, going away on holiday. But if you are planning on welcoming a furry friend into your family, we do all have the same checklist in common, with our kids’ safety at the top. So, with that in mind, children and animals should always be supervised by a trusted adult. It’s also worth remembering all creatures, whether great or small, will rely on you to give them a happy, loving life. As a family, be really honest with yourselves. Is a pet genuinely for you? Because these special souls are a massive commitment. And never ever feel bad

person.’ Let’s start with the smallest furries – hamsters, gerbils, mice and rats. ‘These are something that a small child could independently look after, but watch out, because they can be a bit nippy!’ Trudy added. ‘The next stage on would be rabbits and guinea pigs, and young children can give them the love and attention they need.’ How about existing pets? Helping feed cats and dogs already in the home and giving them their water are lovely jobs for little ones to get involved in. And a family walk with

But what about if the kids are still pestering you for a pet, even though you’ve made a careful decision that it is just not possible? You can always sponsor an animal. Literally any animal! Bluecross.org.uk have cats, rats, hamsters, horses and degus (related to guinea pigs and chinchillas, since you ask) available! A quick internet search shows how many opportunities there are to really make a difference to an animal’s life. Sponsoring one lets them into your family’s heart even though they are not in your home. Try trips to near-by farm parks if your kids fancy getting close to chickens, cows and other field and barn dwelling friends that most of us can’t keep at home. They are super days out for young and old! Children can help with feeding and egg collecting, learn about livestock, and have a top time enjoying all the other activities these pet paradises have to offer. Plus, if you’ve ever told your kids their room resembles a pigsty, it’s always fun to see the real thing…

There are some celebrities that do call out the rubbish and call out other celebrities, Jameela Jamil you are a hero but it is all such a crazy world that is unachievable for most of us mere mortals, so we need new role models. Role models for their brains rather than their arse perhaps? I have started a new fitness regime to feel better in myself and have signed up to James Smith PT’s 3 month jobby. If you haven’t watched any of his videos, I urge you to have a google as he makes sense of so many of our hang ups and short comings, even delving into the stages of the menstrual cycle. Maybe it will happen if you work for it enough, maybe it won’t! Facts about Kumon Toru Kumon
• The Kumon Method of Learning builds key maths and English skills along with the ability to learn independently and gain confidence and enthusiasm by helping students study at just the right level, regardless of age. Students can fill in gaps in knowledge or work far beyond their school grade level depending on ability. • Kumon parents support their children in their daily Kumon study, helping to instil good study habits and a love of learning. You’ll be key to encouraging them to complete their daily work, finding a suitable time and place for them to study, as well as bringing them to their local study centre and communicating with their Kumon Instructor on progress. 3 Bees | May 2019 17

MoneyMatters Teaching Children To Save ‘Money doesn’t grow on trees.’ We know this because, number one, as adults we have to go out and work hard to earn it. Number two, our parents (who, as you probably remember, were ‘not banks, you know’) told us this again and again. But temptation is everywhere these days. It’s no different for kids wanting the latest craze toy as it is for adults wanting the latest tech. Or, erm, sparkly bracelets that look the same, but are all different – honest…
S

because they ‘really, really would love this toy and will play with it all the time, mummy,’ the saving seed will have been sown. The joy of teaching children to keep hold of their money is that it’s practical and fun, especially with older kids. Martin Lewis, founder and chair of MoneySavingExpert.com describes pocket money as ‘a beginners’ guide to saving.’ According to the site, it teaches children about regular income, and encourages kids to think about what they truly want to spend their money on. It is well worth having a look at this sort of website in your mission to get your mini me good with money. MoneySavingExpert.com suggests giving kids half their pocket money to spend, and half to save. Win-win! In fact, websites helping our kids find a home for their money manage to make saving look more appealing than spending! For younger savers, you could bring in a ten percent rule. By saving ten pence of a pound, or one pound of a £10 note (which are no hardship for them to put away, really), kids will soon start to see their money box fill up. If your older child helps with chores to earn their pocket money, they get a sense of satisfaction too, and may be more inclined to save because they know their pay didn’t come easy. How about younger children? Putting away a bit of birthday

Conception can only occur following ovulation, which is around 14 days before the first day of your period. If your cycles are irregular and you can’t predict when your next one is due, this can make identifying ovulation more difficult. Tracking your periods, ovulation, temperature and when you are having sex is a great way to visualise what’s going on and can help you better understand your body. There are many apps that will do this for you, but a pen and paper work just as well. Getting to know your body by listening to what it’s telling you is never a wasted experience! Your temperature rises slightly when you are ovulating – plotting your temp first thing in a morning will help you put all the other pieces together. Your vaginal discharge also becomes much thicker and stringier which you will be able to feel and see. Observing and plotting takes time though, so don’t expect to have it cracked the first month. Planning for pregnancy is an amazing journey, enjoy the process and you will be on the road to motherhood before you know it!

Mine would be, ‘always treat others as you would like to be treated yourself.’ And if Harry Kane wants to come around for tea, well, that’s quite alright too… We know children of all age are like sponges. My six-year-old once looked up from her colouring-in and declared: ‘Absolute Radio – where real music matters!’ She had absorbed their jingle from hearing the station playing in the car. She has also recently quoted a washing powder advert to me, as I debated how best to wash my nineyear-old’s ridiculously muddy football kit… It goes to show, that, put simply, monkey see, monkey do. For Weaning Weaning my little one once (and only once, for reasons which will become clear!) involved me expressing breastmilk direct from the source into a bowl of baby rice. That manoeuvre went as well as could be expected. My son wasn’t keen either and reached over to his dad’s nearby wallet, which he proceeded to gnaw on. So, I set my own cereal on the table and turned around to make a cup of tea. I then sat back down to find my son shovelling fistfuls of flakes covered in semi-skimmed milk gleefully into his mouth. From then on, whatever I ate, he ate.

I would say don’t forget to pack spoons, but little ones will use their fingers whatever utensils you bring. With that in mind, bring plenty of wet wipes on your picnic and consider a change of clothes (for all concerned!) as well. We all know water is the best drink, although getting your kids to agree is easier said than done. I stood firm on that one. But I’ve had to sit through many soul-destroying screams for squash. Lastly, whatever items you pack for your adventure, be prepared to find them stuck to your picnic blanket for the foreseeable future. It’s not only the memories of family fun that never leave us…

Dealing with
Morning Sickness Morning sickness is the nauseous feeling commonly experienced during the first trimester. It usually starts in the morning and wears off as you become active throughout your day. While not all morning sickness remedies may work for you, there are several options you can try to find some relief.
In the Morning: Allow yourself plenty of time to get out of bed. If you usually get up at 6:00 a.m., set your alarm for 5:00 a.m. It is a good idea to keep a stash of crackers or dry cereal by your bed so you can put something in your stomach as soon as you wake up. Get out of bed slowly as you start your day.
During the Day:
Eat small meals throughout the day to avoid getting too full or too hungry. Progesterone slows the speed of food passing through your digestive tract. To further prevent your stomach from getting too full or too empty, drink fluids a 1/2 hour before or after meals, but not with meals. Also make sure to drink fluids throughout the day to avoid dehydration. Get plenty of rest when you can. This is especially important if you have to get up early in the morning. However, DON’T take a nap right after a meal because this can increase nausea. Avoid foods or smells that make your nausea worse, and avoid being in warm places, which can increase your nausea.
In the Evening:
For dinner avoid spicy, greasy foods. Prepare foods that are bland and do not have a strong odor. You may have to avoid cooking for the first trimester. Most importantly, go to bed early! You need your rest to have the energy to get up early and do it all over again. If you happen to wake up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom, try to eat something small from your bedside stash.
Suggested Meals • Cold foods (sandwiches, raw vegetables, salad) • Bland foods (chicken soup, plain baked potato) • Plain vegetables or fruits • Foods rich in vitamin B6
Keep meals small, but eat as frequently as you need 32 3 Bees | May 2019
Suggested Snacks to Eat • Lemons (Eat them, suck on them, or sniff them.) • Ginger (ginger ale, ginger tea, ginger jam on toast, ginger snaps) • Peppermint tea • Crackers • Jelly • Flavoured ice lollies

Pollywiggle Cottage Pollywiggle Cottage is a charming 3 bedroom Victorian cottage in the popular coastal village of Heacham available for short breaks and holidays. Just over an hour’s drive away it really is the gateway to the beautiful North Norfolk coast.
T
he cosy cottage built in 1882 sleeps 6 in 3 bedrooms (king, double & bunk) plus we have a cot for a baby. We welcome well behaved dogs and have tried to supply everything you will need for babies and pets - travel cot, high chair, baby monitor, dog crate, dog bowls etc. On sunny days the south facing enclosed garden is a great place to relax with table and chairs as well as a BBQ. Or on those winter nights you can warm up in front of the open fire. There is also complementary wifi & parking to the rear of the property. All prices include a full clean before and after your visit as well as linen and towels - you will just need your bikini and beach towels! The Local Area Heacham became popular as a seaside resort with the Victorians due to the opening of the railway between King’s Lynn and Hunstanton in the early 1860s. North Beach has an amusement arcade, a cafe and a fish bar. There are also beach huts available for hire. Both beaches have public toilet facilities. South Beach has its own cafe, which serves meals throughout the year and sells beach goods. It’s a 20-30 minute stroll along the promenade into Hunstanton where you will find an array of restaurants, amusements, fair rides, SeaLife Centre, swimming pool and much more. The beaches at Heacham are situated on the east banks of The Wash; this means it is one of the few beaches in eastern England where the sun sets over the sea instead of over the land. Many say Heacham village is the largest village in the UK and has all the facilities you would need on your doorstep – Tesco Local, McColls, Indian restaurant, Fish and Chip shop, cycle hire, 3 pubs and the Coasthopper bus route stops just 30 seconds from the front door if you do not wish to travel by car to see all the sights of the coast. Pollywiggle Cottage is always well reviewed and every tripadvisor rating is either 4 or 5 stars! Here’s what our guests say: “Stayed for 4 nights in April with 13 month old daughter and our dog. Perfect little cottage in a handy location. Well equipped for babies, with high chair, travel cot, video monitor, black out blind and even toys!
Shops, bakery, butchers, Indian/Chinese/ chippy takeaways all in walking distance as is the beach. Handy to have its own parking (all be it a bit tight for two cars). Nice safe enclosed garden for the dog and dog bowls & blankets provided. We even got amazing weather! Thank you.” “We have just returned from another wonderful weekend at the beautiful Pollywiggle cottage. We found the owners really have thought of everything you may need to make the stay feel like home from home. If your traveling with children they have all the essentials and more! There’s a toy box in the children’s room which kept our 3 entertained for hours. A baby monitor, stair gates, blackout blind, bed rail.. you name it, it’s there! They even have the fur babies covered too with dog bowls, crates and balls! The cottage is very clean and tastefully decorated. We loved having the open fire roaring away on a cold winter evening! It really is the perfect place to warm up and relax with a glass of wine after a chilly afternoon walking on the beach. There are a few pubs and restaurants within easy walking distance. We can highly recommend the Spice garden for an evening meal and the Bushel and Strike for a pint. The Bushel is very dog friendly and has a children’s playground. We would highly recommend a stay here and hope to return in the summer.” “Second stay at the property. It’s just so cosy and lovely. Great location and the owner is very friendly and helpful. Perfect for a break away with your dogs. Quiet comfortable and clean :-) planning to go back next year too. Love it Thanks for the goody bags too much appreciated and really made it extra special!” “Lovely cottage with all the cosy extras (log fire/ blankets/ lighting ) with modern touches. Very clean and well-kept and with a parking space at the rear, with plenty more road parking close by. It is within walking distance of a number of pubs and beaches. Sleep 2 x Doubles and Bunk (3 Bedrooms) Welcoming for all ages and 2 fur babies.. (dogs). I will be returning again in the new year. Nice to find a clean well-presented accommodation that makes you feel like it is “home from home”.
Prices start from just £375 for a week and £282 for a short break. skincare by The Village Midwives
Y
There are lots of gorgeous smelling, amazing products out there and we love these gentler options for your baby’s skincare; our precious little bundle has finally arrived and it seems the thing to do to bath them and give them that delicious newborn smell! Did you know that
bathing them too soon after birth, or too often once you start can be really bad for their skin and can make things like eczema, dry skin and rashes more common? Many traditional baby products contain harsh chemicals that make skin a real problem. If you are cleaning their face and eyes with cotton wool and water a couple of times a day, as well as cleaning their bottom when you change their nappy, there is very little else that needs doing unless you have a Poonami on your hands! While their cord is attached, gently cleaning the skin with water is great, but keep the cord dry itself. The direr it stays, the more quickly it will fall off. Daily bathing strips the oils from the skin, especially when the bath products contain industrial degreasers like Sodium Laurel Sulphate. Although moisturising afterwards can help replace the oils lost, these can also contain degreasers which will dry your baby’s skin out even more. Aim for a bath once a week, or even once a
1) Burts Bees. Soft and bubbly, and smells of honey and summers days. Their bubble bath, baby bee shampoo, milk soap and multi-purpose ointment are my favourite picks! A little goes a long way. 2) Childs Farm. A lovely brand created by a parent who couldn’t find anything to help her child’s sensitive skin. Great for babies who already have skin problems. 3) Asda’s Little Angels. A surprisingly junk free baby range from a supermarket 4) Bloom & Blossom. Apparently favoured by Kate Middleton for her brood, this is a gorgeous range of products that are as junk free as you’re going to get! 5) Tom’s of Maine. A less well-known brand in the UK but some they make some gorgeous products at reasonable prices 6) Kokoso. An unrefined and unfractionated coconut oil which is solid in the pot until you warm a little bit in your hands and it turns to liquid. Goes a very long way, so even though it can feel expensive to buy a pot, it will last you for months. Coconut oil is also the product of choice for cradle cap! (brush the oil against the direction of hair growth and scales using a baby hairbrush and leave in overnight. You might want to put a muslin square down on their bed to keep the oil off their sheets! In the morning, rinse off with water, dry with a towel and reapply. They key is keeping the flakes of cradle cap wet!)

Auto-Biographies
New Volvo V60 By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist. Tweeting @carwriteups At first glance, you think the new Volvo V60 is the V90. Then you get closer and realise it’s smaller than its brother. The cars look very similar, and that’s a good thing because they’re both handsome.
I
f you put both models next to each other, I bet you’d agree with me that the V60 beats the V90 in terms of attractiveness. Why? Because it’s more compact and as a result, the car looks more taut and athletic. But the new estate has far more about it than sex appeal. The outgoing V60’s boot has been superseded by a load area that’s the biggest in its segment. Open the tailgate, and 539 litres of cargo capacity greets you. Crucially, the fresh V60 beats its German foes in this area. The BMW 3 Series Touring’s boot only offers 495 litres and Audi’s A4 Avant manages just 505-litres. The Swede is longer than the Audi and BMW too, meaning there’s decent room for four adult occupants. A fifth person could squeeze into the middle of the back seat, but a prominent transmission tunnel hump hampers legroom. In the front, all looks classy and relaxed, with a dashboard that is mainly digital. There’s not as much metal or wood in the V60 when compared with the V90 - instead, you get soft plastics. However, this doesn’t rain on the parade - everything still looks solid and well screwed together. Behind the wheel, the new V60 is planted and comfy. I was handed the keys to the 190PS 2.0-litre four-cylinder D4 model. The diesel engine pulls like a train with zero to
62mph arriving in 7.9 seconds. Top speed is 137mph. It’s an efficient unit too, returning a claimed average of 61.4mpg. The new estate car’s ride is excellent, primarily due to the flexible suspension system, and the steering weights up well from 40mph. These two things alone make the 2018 model V60 a delight to drive. It’s entirely suited to the UK’s roads, making it an ideal commuting machine. Thanks to its general roominess, it’s also a perfect family vehicle. The new Volvo V60’s spec is a bit of a downer. From launch, there are only two levels of trim - Momentum and Inscription. Happily, the more athletic R-Design and elevated Cross-Country variants will soon join the party. And while the V60 is well kitted-out with features like LED headlights, sat-nav and a portrait touchscreen, other alluring accessories, such as semi-autonomous driving aids and Apple CarPlay, are on the options list. These can make an already costly car even more expensive to buy or lease. Still, you should have the V60 on your shopping list if an estate car is what you’re after – especially one as eye-catching and accommodating as this.
