Peter’s Notes
Page 8
I have to begin with the exciting news that Hayley and Peter welcomed baby Stanley into the world on 17th May and have wasted no time in becoming a wonderful little family unit. Congratulations to you all and enjoy every minute – anyone reading this who is a parent will testify as to just how quickly the time flies when you have a little one! This issue we look at Boston Running Club. Part of the Skegness and District running club, they are a friendly bunch who are looking for more people interested in taking up running as a hobby. With time at a premium these days why not combine getting some exercise with meeting new people and starting a hobby. And who knows where it could lead? London Marathon anyone?! Elsewhere in the issue we look at homes from the outside. Often referred to as kerb appeal it is amazing how much effort can go into making the exterior of a house look fabulous. Soffits and fascias, guttering, double glazing, fencing, the list goes on! If you fancy a bit of an external refresh then we might just be able to get you underway! Finally, with the summer holidays on the horizon we have the first of a two part feature concerned with keeping the children entertained during their time off. This issue we are keeping it local with days out not too far from home and in the August issue we are planning on looking a little further afield. Enjoy the issue.

SP Falconry joins Johnsons of Boston Johnsons Garden Centre has announced that it will be opening a Bird & Owl Sanctuary with around 30 birds on August 1st, run by SP Falconry. Walker Cunningham to lead Algarkirk’s Restoration The church of St Peter and St Paul, Algarkirk has announced today the appointment of architects Walker Cunnington to lead them in their conservation and restoration programme. John-Paul Walker, partner, said: “We are delighted to join the team at Algarkirk Church as lead architects. It is an exciting privilege to help write the next chapter in the story of community and their wonderful Cathedral of the Fens.” The church which was recently the victim of lead theft and associated damage, will now have plans drawn up showing how the existing church can be adapted to provide - in addition to a place of worship - up to date visitor facilities, including interpretation to help visitors understand the local and national importance of this Grade I listed church. It is also planned, when work is on site, to set up a Heritage Skills Centre, which will offer visitors the opportunity to understand and experience traditional building techniques. Algarkirk Major Project Group leader, Audrey Young, stressed: “We chose Walker Cunnington from some stiff competition because we were confident that they had both the skill and inspiration to lead us successfully through this project. Naturally the local community will be involved in the entire process so at the end we will have achieved something that is not only perfect for the church, but also for all those that will be using it.” 4 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON
Bike Night rides to town Boston bike night returns this year on July 2 from 6pm – 10pm. Held annually since 1998 the bike night is now the largest summer event in Boston with thousands of people expected to attend. The largest motorcycle event in South Lincolnshire, the event now encompasses the whole of the town centre, offering something for both bike enthusiasts and the general public alike. The event is organised by the Boston Motorcycle Riders Association (BMRA), who tell visitors to expect riders of motorcycles, scooters, trikes & sidecars from all over the country descending upon Boston’s Town Centre from the Bargate End car parks, Pescod Square through to the far end of the Market Place, filling it with a spectacular array of machinery, including all types of makes and models, from sports bikes, tourers, to the classic varieties. Not only is the event a Mecca for riders and fans of motorcycles, it is also a great family night out. Last year it was estimated that over 2500 people were visiting the Bike Night at any one time, to a total of probably more than 8000 which is a great boost for businesses in the town centre.

Mayor’s charities cheque presentation Boston’s outgoing Mayor, Cllr Alison Austin, has handed over a total of £6600 raised for her nominated charities during her year in office. Boston’s Centrepoint Outreach and Boston Gateway Club both received a cheque for £3300 when representatives met with the Mayor in the Mayor’s Parlour on Wednesday, May 20. Fundraising events ranged from a strawberry tea gathering in Cllr Austin’s garden, a ‘Flog It’ evening with a fish and chip supper, Salvation Army musical alchemy, Chinese nearly New Year at Albert’s, Spalding Ukulele orchestra sausage and mash supper, Musical extravaganza at St Leodegars Church, Wyberton with a mixture of acts along with Swineshead Silver Band and an Admiral of Wash river cruise on the Boston Belle. Cllr Austin thanked all who had supported the events and made donations.
She said: “It has been a great privilege and honour along with a mixture of emotions of pride and humanity. Most of our events were low key fun family events where I was overwhelmed with the turnout of people who attended.” Also present was deputy mayor Helen Staples. Liz Hopkins, Chief Executive of Centrepoint Outreach said: “We are very grateful for these funds raised. We had such a good time fundraising, it was an honour to be part of it all.” John Roney, Chairman of Boston Gateway Club said: “I can only thank Alison for her enormous generosity to us. It is an honour to be one of the Mayor’s charities. There are so many charities that could have been chosen. Boston Gateway club know that we have a true friend in Alison. She will always find a warm welcome from our members whenever she wishes to visit us.”

Building firm completes first phase of new flood resistant homes
Residents moving into a new social housing development in Boston will have the added peace of mind that their homes have been built to a new flood resistant design. Keys to the first phase of a new kind of innovative flood resistant housing in Boston have been handed over by building firm D. Brown Building Contractors Ltd. The homes are designed specifically for high risk flood areas and so have no living accommodation on the ground floor. They are among the first of their kind to be built since flooding affected Boston and other east coast areas in December 2013. The Blue Street development for the Waterloo Housing Trust will comprise of 41 homes when fully complete at the end of this year. The terraced and semi-detached homes are either two or three storey. Eight are for shared ownership and the remainder for rent. Peter Pitt, Senior Contracts Manager for the firm, says the homes are built with timber frames and to Level 3 Code for Sustainable Homes. “With staggered, pitched roofing, Juliet balconies and garages with doors and metal gates the development looks very attractive compared to many social housing schemes,” he said. “Importantly we have designed the homes to have no living space on the ground floor due to the flooding issues associated with Boston and the surrounding low-lying area.” SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk |

Each issue Peter Bedford, leader of Boston Borough Council, discusses the important topics in and around Boston One of my responsibilities, as leader of Boston Borough Council, is to encourage and assist any way we can, economic regeneration. That might sound a bit fancy. In essence it means I do all I can to make Boston a better place to do business in. Simple? Anything but in these tough economic times! So I am greatly encouraged when I hear that a local businessman, who knows full well the area and the potential for new trade, invests his hard-earned cash. It says as much to me as the larger-scale expansions and developments, all of which are welcomed, of course. The little man, little in a business sense, has much, much more to risk, must do all his homework and be as sure as he can be that the financial risk is worth the commercial gain. Carl Dunham is such a man, and has my admiration. Carl has opened his second shop in Red Lion Street. His other butcher’s shop is in London Road. Carl said his confidence comes from attracting discerning customers who want freshly-prepared meat, jointed from the carcass in the shop by his skilled staff. All meat is locally sourced with easy and immediate traceability, which is also good for local businesses. In addition his new shop also has an extensive range of hot, cold and frozen homemade pies, sausage rolls and traditional Lincolnshire fare such as sausages, haslet and plum loaf. The new shop is an area of mixed ethnicity and new customers include Eastern Europeans discovering the delights
of haslet and plum loaf. This, and others, show that Boston is booming with more businesses showing confidence in the area’s prosperity and prepared to invest their hard-earned cash. A farm equipment manufacturer is to open a new headquarters and factory at Frampton Fen, subject to planning permission. A main line will be highcapacity tipping trailers to be used in agriculture and for the transport of woodchip and maize silage in connection with production of renewable energy. There will be about ten jobs including five apprentices, teaching them to weld and manufacture. This is excellent news for the borough for a number of different reasons. It brings a redundant site back into use and demonstrates again the growing confidence that people have in the area as a place to do business. I am especially pleased to hear that there will be places for apprentices and training in manufacturing and improving these necessary skills. It shows the Government policy of supporting apprenticeships is working. It is also good to note that this new business will be meeting the needs of the growing renewable energy sector. This confidence in Boston and the borough is also being shown by the expansion of B&M with their new store at Alban Retain Park creating 60 jobs and increasing footfall for other businesses in the area. I wish them all every success for the future. Cllr Peter Bedford

The Mental Health Act 1983
T
raditionally, section 136 of the Mental Health Act 1983 has been used in order for the police to protect those people who pose an immediate risk to themselves or the public through their mental ill health. Police officers have detained people for their own protection, and brought them to a police station as a place of safety for them to be assessed by an approved mental health practitioner and suitably qualified doctor. In fact, suffering a mental health crisis can be incredibly stigmatic for the person in crisis. The anxiety faced by a person in crisis is likely to be increased by being arrested by a police officer in uniform, and then amplified by being transported in a police vehicle, and then finally by being detained in a police cell. When surveyed, many people who have experienced being detained under section 136 report that although officers have been invariably kind and caring, the process of being arrested and placed in a police cell has been distressing and compounded the negative emotions they have already been suffering. The government have now recognised that a police cell is not an appropriate place for people suffering from mental health problems and have announced up to £15m of new funds to provide alternative facilities in hospitals and health centres. The Home Secretary, Theresa May stated “Nobody wins when the police are sent to look after people
“Theresa May stated “Nobody wins when the police are sent to look after people suffering from mental health problems. Vulnerable people don’t get the care they need and deserve, and the police can’t get on with the job they are trained to do.” suffering from mental health problems. Vulnerable people don’t get the care they need and deserve, and the police can’t get on with the job they are trained to do.” Christine Jones, lead for mental health and policing at the National Police Chiefs Council, said:”People experiencing a mental health crisis are not criminals. Nor are police officers and staff medical professionals. Those who are urgently unwell, whether physically or mentally should be taken to a health-based setting to receive the right care and support. It’s unacceptable for anyone, of any age, to end up in a police cell because the appropriate mental health services are not available.” All this very good news for the people of Boston as firstly and more importantly, less people suffering from mental health problems will be kept in police cells and secondly, a lot more officer time will be freed up to deal with our core policing priorities and ensure that Boston remains a safe place to live and work.
“People experiencing a mental health crisis are not criminals. Nor are police officers and staff medical professionals.”

Holiday pay for workers ❱ BY STUART HELLON Summer is coming! The sun is shining (well, sometimes!) and thoughts turn to holidays. A well-earned break from work – but will you be paid? Find out in our simple guide to holiday pay for workers.
Who has the right to paid holidays? You have the right to take paid holiday from work if you are a worker. This includes people who work full-time, part-time, agency workers and casual workers. Most workers have the right to take a minimum amount of paid holiday. This is called statutory holiday.
How long must I work before I am entitled to holiday pay? You have the right to paid holiday from the day you start work. This doesn’t mean you can take all of your leave as soon as you start work. The law says how your paid holiday builds up in your first year of work.
How much paid holiday can I have? You are entitled to 5.6 weeks of paid holiday a year. A week is how long you normally work. So if you work two days a week, you will be entitled to 5.6 x 2 which is 11.2 days a year. This can include Bank Holidays but check your contract about this. Your contract of employment may give you the right to take more than the statutory amount of paid holiday. However, it cannot give you less.
I work for an agency. They say I’m not entitled to paid holiday. Agency workers have the right to take 5.6 weeks’ paid holiday a year, just like other workers.
How much holiday pay should I get? Your employer will pay your holiday pay at the same rate as your normal pay. You may get a higher rate of holiday pay if your contract gives you the right to a higher rate. If you do casual work, or work irregular hours and aren’t sure how to work out how much holiday pay you’re entitled to, come to the Citizens Advice Bureau. Some employers and employment agencies may say that your hourly rate of pay includes an amount for holiday pay, and that they expect you to save this part of your pay to cover your holidays. This is known as ‘rolled up’ holiday pay. Rolled up holiday pay may be against the law unless your holiday pay is paid on top of your basic pay and it’s clear what the amount of rolled up holiday pay is. For example, the amount of rolled up holiday pay should be clearly set out in your payslip. If you have any questions about holidays or holiday pay please come along to the CAB, or look on our information website www.citizensadvice.org.uk.

Opposing sides of good and evil are sizing each other up for battle, but that’s the last thing that rare book shop owner angel Aziraphale and Bentley driving demon Crowley want. They enjoy their life on Earth too much to let it come to an end. They need to stop the Antichrist and the Four Riders of the Apocalypse to prevent the end of the world, but can they reach them in time… I’ve been a fan of both Pratchett and Gaiman for many years, but had never read this book, which combines the talents of these two successful authors. I suppose it could be classed as a classic now that it is 25 years old, but it doesn’t show its age and is just as enjoyable as anything that either author has produced over that time. This collaborative effort is a fast, funny and brilliantly dark tale of mankind’s final days.

Sutterton Veterinary Centre “The surgery offer their own Pet Health Care plan which includes many products and services which contribute to the health and wellbeing of your dog and cat...”
S
ince opening their doors in December 2013 Sutterton Veterinary Centre has gone from strength to strength. Conveniently situated just off the Sutterton Roundabout it is easily accessible from Spalding, Boston and all of the surrounding villages. Benefitting from a large car park, once you go in a modern and inviting atmosphere awaits. After checking in at reception you will find a large waiting room with separate areas for cats and dogs. As well as the nation’s favourite pets the surgery can also take care of your exotic pets. Be it check-ups, boosters or flea treatments the experienced team are always on hand with expert advice and guidance. If there is something wrong with your pet which requires investigation the surgery has a lot of on-site equipment such as a digital X-ray and Ultrasound scanner and blood analysis is also carried out on site so there are no long waiting times for results which means that a diagnosis can be made faster (and treatment can begin sooner). Crucially, the surgery offers a 24-hour emergency service so once you have registered with the surgery you can rest assured that you will have access to the team whenever you need it should an emergency arise. The practice intends to apply for “Hospital” status in the next few months after having made some final building alterations and increased staffing numbers. This would allow for 24h care of in-patients and would be the only practice in the local area to offer this level of facilities and on site staffing. Currently the surgery already offers an extensive, comfortable kennelled area specifically for dogs. There is also a separate room for isolating any coughing dogs or for sick cases of
potentially contagious diseases such as parvovirus. As with the waiting rooms, there is also a separate area for the cattery, ensuring your cat can stay calm and relaxed while staying. For our exotic friends, there is dedicated vivarium reptile housing including thermostatically heated enclosures and the provision of ultraviolet lighting. The surgery offer their own Pet Health Care plan which includes many products and services which contribute to the health and wellbeing of your dog and cat so if you would like to pay monthly rather than risk the possibility of large bills if something unexpected comes up.
Opening hours are 8:30 – 6:30 Monday – Friday and 9-12:30 on Saturday. To register or book an appointment please call 0845 5484478 or 01205 460513. You can also visit the website, www.suttertonvets.co.uk for more information. 14 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON

Boston College Boston College students have made steps towards their mission to achieve excellence by competing in Building Brilliance and Skills Links competitions. Building Brilliance and Skills Links are the college’s initiatives in the Construction and LLDD/Foundation Departments in line with the WorldSkills movement, which is the global hub for skills excellence and development. At Boston College, a competitive culture is being promoted in order to challenge students in vocational, technological and service orientated careers to become the best in the skill of their choice, whilst raising awareness of the fact that our future depends on an effective skills training system. This encouragement of a competitive culture started within the Construction Department at Boston College, where Building Brilliance was created. This is a competition in skills with a points based judging system. Lecturers recognised that by installing a competitive culture, the students worked extremely hard and much more enthusiastically in order to do the best they could. This year, the construction Building Brilliance event took place on Wednesday 6th May and was opened by Matthew Grove, Humberside Police and Crime Commissioner and former construction student at the college. He spoke with all competing students on the importance of striving to be the best and the importance of hard work and determination. The skills being showcased were joinery, plumbing, brickwork and maintenance operations. Winners were as follows: Level 1 Joinery: Ben Wardle Level 2 Joinery: Charlie Strachan Level 1 Plumbing: Daniel Parnham Level 2 Plumbing: Ryan Armstrong Level 1 Brickwork: Keelan Swain Level 2 Maintenance Operations: Adam Swain Also presented at this event was the award for student of the year, which went to Max Reed for his achievements and progress during this academic year.

Focus on Boston
Focus on Boston New running club for the Boston area
R
unners of all abilities, including those just taking up this sociable hobby are invited to join up with the Boston area group of the Skegness & District Running Club. They meet up at the Peter Paine Sports Centre on Roseberry Avenue in Boston on Thursdays at 7pm. It’s an informal club run covering varying distances for all abilities and they are always on the lookout for new members. Skegness & District Running Club was formed in November 2014 with the intention of bringing structured training as well as fun and a good social life to local runners. They host training sessions in Skegness on a Monday evening 6.30pm from their base the Crown Hotel on Drummond Road, PE25 3AB. In the Autumn and Winter they also meet at the Crown on a Wednesday evening 6.30pm and run several half mile and mile intervals on the Promenade. However they are not just a Skegness club, hence the ‘District’ part of the name. There are members in Spilsby, Wainfleet, Horncastle, Boston and the villages in-between where social runs are organised, often from pubs so that a drink/meal and a good chat can be enjoyed afterwards. Members are encouraged to suggest their favorite runs on the Facebook page so group runs from those locations can be organised. In the Spring and Summer our runners will take part in the Wednesday evening races in the Wolds. Skegness & District Running Club will be hosting two “Bolingbroke Breaker” 10K events this year. Starting and finishing at the Black Horse Inn Old Bolingbroke. The course is very scenic but quite challenging with two good hills to climb. Membership fees are low, just £10 per year or £5 if there is less than 6 months to renewal time which is at the start of April each year. The club is affiliated to ARC (Association of Running Clubs) at present and have applied to be affiliated to UKA (United Kingdom

You can, and you start with walking! COUCH TO 5K -you know it makes sense Regular running can reduce the risk of chronic illnesses such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes and strokes. It can also help with weight control, boosts your mood, helps with sleep and generally gives you a sense of wellbeing. So if you are interested in starting running in a relaxed but supportive atmosphere and have a bit of fun along the way then get in touch. If you would like any information or just an informal chat please call Helena 07795578825. We are looking to start a Couch to 5K course in Boston shortly.

Summer Holiday Days Out
Keeping busy in the Summer Holidays
C
There can be lots of time to fill during the summer holidays so we lend a helping hand with a few ideas for days out ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
“All of these days out have websites so make sure you go online before you head out to check opening times and special events.”
ome rain or shine there are several weeks between July and the beginning of September when the children will be demanding to be entertained! Whether you are an indoors type family or prefer to be out taking advantage of the fresh air there is plenty in the area to keep all ages busy. Indoors When the rain comes (and it will!) finding something to do which is indoors can help stave off the boredom. You could try bowling at Boston Bowl where you will also find pool, an arcade to enjoy and a diner for somewhere to eat and drink when you’ve finished. For younger ones the Playtowers are an excellent place to take the children to get rid of any excess energy and really wear themselves out! It’s a good excuse for a group of you to have a get together and let the kids run wild! If you children are arty then Pots of Fun in Boston may have the answer, especially if you are not a fan of messy play at home! Taking some time out to create something beautiful to keep is a great way to spend an afternoon. Outdoors If you haven’t already visited then RSPB Frampton Marsh is a real treat, especially on a beautiful day. This coastal wetland reserve includes habitats created to bring wildlife to the Wash. With a visitor centre, toilets and a refreshment centre you can spend the day exploring or in one of the 3 available hides. Maud Foster Windmill gives children the opportunity to see a working mill and you can use the shop afterwards to take away some of their products to use for yourself. If the weather is particularly good then hop in
the car and head to the Central Beach in Skegness. With its many attractions for people young and old there is always a full day out to be had at Skegness. You could even tie it in with an event at The Embassy in the evening for a full day out! If you love animals then Tattershall Farm Park is for you! A friendly family run attraction, fun and farming go hand in hand. Outside you can see animals as well as an adventure play area with zip wire, toddler play area and sand pits. Inside is a 2 story indoor play barn, a toddler play room, a huge indoor sand pit room and a fantastic swing barn, decked out with bales of straw, as well as a barn full of 31 varieties of chicken. All of these days out have websites so make sure you go online before you head out to check opening times and special events. SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk |

Gardening
Pest Control! Of all of the pests in your garden perhaps the most unwelcome are rodents. We take a look at these furry invaders and provide some help in how to get rid of them
D
uring the summer we love to get out into our gardens. To barbecue, lounge about or relax by doing a little gardening, the garden it where it’s at. And we love to attract wildlife into our gardens. Birds, bees, butterflies and a myriad of welcome visitors add beauty to the outdoors but what about those unwelcome creatures that are also attracted to our gardens? The thought of having rodents in the gardens (or even worse, near your house) can be awful, so what attracts them and if you are unfortunate enough to get them, how do you get rid of them?
Rats come with risks to health as they transmit diseases such as Weil’s disease which can be very serious indeed. As well as this rats have mites and fleas which can be problematic if you have cats and dogs as they can be transferred to them. As well as the health aspect rats and mice can be very destructive due to the fact that they love to chew and gnaw. If they get into your house then wiring is a firm favourite of rodents along with walls to get to food or create a nest.
â?ą BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
Mike from PPM Services offers his top ten tips for avoiding rodent infestation: 1. Ensure your premises are in good repair. Repair broken tiles and cracks or holes in walls. 2. Remove sources of food and water. Rodents will only nest where there is food and water nearby. Repair dripping taps and secure dry food in plastic containers. Do not leave out pet food longer than you should. 3. Remove shelter and nesting material. Newspapers, plastic bags, and cardboard will provide nesting material for rodents. Do not store them unless you have to, and check on them regularly. A wood store near the back door is a favourite for mice. 4. Keep drains and gutters in good repair. Rodents can get into your home through broken pipes and drains. 5. Place compost bins on hard standing. Rats will burrow underneath a compost bin because it is warm and a good source of food. By placing your compost bin on concrete slabs it will prevent rats getting underneath your compost bin. 6. Install door sweeps to keep out mice. Mice only need a space of 6mm to gain access under your door. A door sweep will help keep them out. 7. Keep bird feeders at minimum level. Rodents will easily climb a bird feeder to get to bird food. Over spillage and crumbs that fall from bird tables are also a source of food for rodents. 8. Keep plastic rubbish bags inside metal bins. It would be wise to invest in a couple of galvanised metal bins to store rubbish while waiting for collection day. Rodents will get through bags with ease. It will cause a mess and the rodents will keep coming back where they know there is food. 9. De-clutter your home. Clutter provides nesting materials, safety and harbourage for rodents. Long term clutter is a breeding ground for rats and mice. Clean behind your fridge and oven every few months, particularly just before winter. Rodents can live on crumbs. 10. Seek advice from a professional pest controller. A reputable pest controller will give you free advice on how to avoid rodents and secure you home from unwanted guests.
If you have rats or mice in your home there will be signs such as droppings and noises (especially at night as that is when rodents are most active). Rodents in the garden can be a little trickier to detect. Unfortunately most people realise they have them when they first see them! If you do see mice or rats in your garden try to find out where they are going to (for example, compost heaps or any other warm dry places). If you feel confident then you can trap or bait them using a rat bait station (to stop friendly visitors like hedgehogs getting access to it). If the problem seems large or if you are in any doubt then it is best to speak to a professional pest controller. 20 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON

Taking Kerb Appeal to the Next Level If you are looking to make some home improvements then you might like to work from the outside in. Making alterations to the exterior can dramatically alter the appearance of your house
“Changing your windows can not only update the look of your home but also help to save money on your energy bills...”
I
❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
f your soffits, fascias and guttering are old or tatty then replacing them will give your home an instant facelift. Fascias are the boards that run along the lower edge of your roof. It is fixed to the roof trusses and carries the guttering. Soffits sit behind the fascias and are ventilated to allow proper air flow into your roof. Guttering is crucial as it carries water away from your house to ensure no water ingress which can cause huge problems in the long term. Whereas soffits and fascias were traditionally made of timber, the most popular types today are made of UPVC as they are extremely durable and will not rot. If you have hired a professional team to replace your soffits and fascias then you ought to seriously consider getting the guttering done at the same time while they are up there! All three come in a variety of colours to complement your style of home. If you own an older property you might like to look at repointing the brickwork. This is where any old broken mortar is removed and replaced or gaps between the bricks are filled in. While it might not seem like an important job it can stop any water from getting into the house. Changing your windows can not only update the look of your home but also help to save money on your energy bills as they are more energy efficient. If you have timber or aluminium frames then consider updating to UPVC. If you are updating the front of your home then consider doing the back too when it comes to windows! Pay attention to any fencing that you have at the front of your house. Keeping it painted to stop weathering and effecting any minor repairs as and
when they occur will keep your front garden looking cared for and tidy. Also consider your driveway. Driveways can look massively different depending on what’s on them. Some are complete concrete, some paved and some gravelled. If you choose to have a new driveway laid then it is wise to use a professional, a wonky DIY driveway won’t do anybody any good! If you would like to completely change the appearance of the outside of your home then you could look at render or cladding. This involves covering the brickwork of your home with either timber or a textured cement which comes in many different colours – just check before you choose a bright wacky colour that it is in keeping with the houses around you! In all cases it is best to use professional companies unless you are particularly confident in your abilities! It won’t be cheaper doing it yourself if you then have to pay for it to be undone and redone!

he hatchback came to British showrooms in March and has, according to the firm, “brought new levels of technological sophistication and driving pleasure to the competitive super-mini segment”. Is it spin? No, not really, as I found out behind the wheel of the up-to-the-minute model. Without a doubt, even before any driving takes place, the Mazda2 makes a fine impression. Featuring an aggressive headlamp shape, the hatchback shuns insipid monobox styling in favour of dynamic, brawny, cab-rearward proportions. It is more attention-grabbing than super-mini deity, the Ford Fiesta - and it has a sportier posture than, say, the Hyundai i20 or Volkswagen’s Polo. Inside, the enthusiasm continues. There is a lot of shoulder and rear knee room in the front; and this is harmonized by supportive, comfortable seats, as well as crystal clear instrumentation and switchgear. The rear is a little cramped – but no worse than many cars at this end of the motor market. Two adult passengers can get in – but, unless you are small, you won’t want to sit in the stern for a long journey. In the real world, it is

children who will spend most of their time in the Mazda’s back seats. There is a five level trim structure - SE, SE-L, SE-L Nav, Sport and Sport Nav. The materials in the top of the range Sport Nav model, on test here, are admirable yet schizophrenic. Most touch-points are covered and cushioned to the point of luxury. On the other hand, low-priced, scratchy, plastics around the electric window switches rain on the parade. In-car connectivity and kit levels are up there with the best. A seven-inch colour touch-screen display, a rotary multimedia commander infotainment control, and an integrated satellite navigation system feature. Benefits also include alloy wheels, smart keyless entry and climate control air-conditioning. The boot is respectable too; it is deep, oblong and therefore practical – ideal for fitting in the weekly shop around your tot’s folded buggy. There are two engines to choose from: a 1.5-litre petrol, which will likely occupy 90 per cent of sales and has three different power outputs (74, 89 and 113bhp) and an efficient 104bhp 1.5-litre diesel. This is the variant I drove; it is fairly hushed for an oil-burner and has an agreeable swell of low down pull. Even better, the car handles sharply and rides well.
Furthermore, the Mazda2 integrates a comprehensive arrangement of active safety systems, and is priced from £11,995 to £17,395 on-the-road. Its arrival is currently being celebrated by the availability of a special £14,995 89bhp petrol powered Sports Launch Edition. This particular car comes festooned with equipment and, quite frankly, represents great value for money. Indeed, with a winning combination of performance, fuel economy, safety and Mazda’s patented driving fun, the all-new Mazda2 line-up has the potential to replicate the popularity of its siblings – the Mazda CX-5, Mazda6 and Mazda3. So, you may now see why I think the box-fresh Mazda2 is a jewel in the East Asian car maker’s crown. Add the company’s excellent reliability record into the mix and you have a car that will serve you well.
