Macular Society Optometrist of the year 2013 & 2015 Nominated

Andy Molsom of Molsom and Associates, has been nominated for the ‘Optometrist of the year’ award as part of the Macular Society’s Awards for Excellence. The nomination recognises his exceptionally good practice in the care of people with macular degeneration. Andy Molsom, who was also nominated for the awards in 2013, said: “I am very proud to have been nominated again for this award. It’s a great honour that a patient has thought my care is worthy for this Award of Excellence”. Cathy Yelf, Chief Executive of the Macular Society, said: “It is clear from his nomination that Mr Molsom works hard to improve the lives of people affected by macular degeneration, with excellence in advice and information. We are extremely grateful for his efforts in Spalding.” Age-related macular degeneration affects the central vision and is the most common cause of sight loss in the UK. More people are affected as our population ages. Kathleen Anna Pell, who nominated Mr Molsom for the award, said: “By making sure I had regular examinations on my eyes Mr Molsom quickly noticed the change in my right eye that dry macular had changed to wet macular and arranged treatment without delay. “Mr Molsom is well known in this area as a competent and caring optometrist and I recommend him for this award.” “By investing in the very latest technology, we are able to deliver an exceptional service for our patients. The latest 3D OCT retinal digital scanner helps us to find those patients who are at risk of sight problems, especially wet AMD, at such an early stage that treatment can make a real difference to retaining good eyesight and with it independence for our patients.” commented Andy Molsom The Macular Society is the national charity for anyone affected by central vision loss. We provide free information and support to improve lives today and we fund research so that one day we can overcome macular disease.

Well Winter never really happened, did it? Despite the papers predicting the coldest winter since records began it was so mild that the trees that line my road were blossoming before the end of January. The husband of a friend of mine described it as a “funny old world” as he told me that all of the daffodils in his garden were flowering in January. So much for “Snowmageddon”! Either way Spring is off to a good head start and it will hopefully lead to a nice warm summer. With the weather looking better we start to look ahead and look at Weddings. If this year is your year to get hitched or you have just got engaged we have provided a handy checklist of things which need to be done before the big day. We also share some of our favourite hints and tips. Elsewhere we take a look at where to start when choosing a pre-school or nursery. It’s never too early to start thinking about what is most important to you in a nursery and going for a look around – sometimes these decisions are harder on you than your child! Finally we take a walk around Spalding and take a look at the blue plaques which are dotted about commemorating famous visitors to Spalding and notable former inhabitants. Put in place by Spalding and District Civic Society, should you have some time to go and find all five then do, and learn a little about who has been where in our town. Enjoy the issue.

John Hayes MP signs Holocaust Educational Trust Book of Commitment John Hayes MP has signed the Holocaust Educational Trust’s Book of Commitment, in doing so pledging his commitment to Holocaust Memorial Day and honouring those who were murdered during the Holocaust as well as paying tribute to the extraordinary Holocaust survivors who work tirelessly to educate young people. Wednesday 27th January marked the liberation of the Nazi concentration and death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau, the site of the largest mass murder in history. In the weeks leading up to and after Holocaust Memorial Day, thousands of commemorative events will be arranged by schools, faith groups and community organisations across the country, remembering all the victims of the Holocaust and subsequent genocides. After signing the Book of Commitment, John Hayes MP commented: “I have signed the Book of Commitment and always will. Holocaust Memorial Day marks the anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration and death camp Auschwitz-Birkenau – and is an important opportunity to remember the victims and survivors of the Holocaust and make sure they are not forgotten. I encourage all constituents to mark the day and to join members of my community in the fight against prejudice and intolerance. The rise in the number of attacks against Jewish people across Europe should remind us that anti-Semitism is not just a historical phenomenon but a worrying aspect of modern life. The recent terrorist attacks in Paris and elsewhere are a stark warning to us all that western values are threatened and that we must all come together to defend our way of life.” Karen Pollock MBE, Chief Executive of the Holocaust Educational Trust, said: “We are proud that John Hayes MP is supporting Holocaust Memorial Day. As we mark the 71st anniversary of the end of the Holocaust and the liberation of the concentration camps, it is vitally important that we both continue to remember and learn from the appalling events of the Holocaust – as well as ensuring that we continue to challenge antisemitism and all forms of bigotry.

Charity Event at the Castle Sports Complex Central German Shepherd Rescue are holding a charity night to raise much needed funds. On March 12 The Rockits will be performing at the Castle Sports Complex in Spalding from 7:30pm to midnight. The resident 50s/60s band at the world famous Cavern Club, the Rockits have a musical repertoire spanning two decades of the finest rock n’ roll, there is sure to be something for everyone. Over the last year the Rescue came to the aid of Destiny, a German Shepard involved in an accident which left her in a serious condition, with her back & back legs broken. As a result her owners did not want to pay

the vet bills due to her injuries and requested that she be put to sleep. As she was only eleven months old at the time the vets contacted the charity for help. The Rescue took Destiny on and all that was needed to put her right, starting with the vet bills. She then went into foster care for her rehabilitation, but that was not the end as it was

discovered by the vets she was pregnant. Soon after Remo was born. Destiny was still not well herself so he couldn’t stay with her. Also being looked after in foster homes, Remo has broken all the rules in the book (all the medication that Destiny was on which has had some adverse effects on him) but thankfully he has pulled through it , Now 6 months later he has found his forever home and is starting his new life . Destiny herself has also made a full recovery and her foster parents have decided that her forever home is with them. The charity can’t know where and

when their help will be needed next and so raising funds is very important. Tickets are on sale for £12.50 each and are available from the Castle Sports Complex, South Holland Centre box office or on line http://www. southhollandcentre.co.uk/whatson/view/the-rockits-charity-event. For any further information call 01775 761313.

Staff raise over £14,000 for Charity Local law firm, Chattertons Solicitors is delighted to have raised £14,181.74 for St Barnabas Lincolnshire Hospice, the Firm’s Charity of the Year for 2015. Throughout the year the Charity Committee and the staff at Chattertons have been helping to organise a number of fundraising activities including quizzes, bake-a-thons, a tombola, raffles,

ten pin bowling, Christmas jumper day and much more. The Firm’s main event of the year was an F1 evening held in September which raised £7,250.00 for the charity. All of these fantastic events would not have been as successful without continued support from local businesses and individuals as well as the generosity and hard work of Chattertons staff. Katherine Bunting, Partner at the Firm and Chair of the Charity Committee says “St Barnabas Lincolnshire Hospice provide a vital and free service that we at Chattertons are proud to support. This year’s Charity has also touched the hearts of the staff at Chattertons as our dear colleague Sophie Attfield was diagnosed with a tumour earlier in the year and has since passed away. Sophie was admitted to St Barnabas Hospice in Lincoln so we are pleased to have been supporting the Hospice in 2015.”

Veronica Brien, Head of Fundraising and Marketing at St Barnabas, says “The team should be so proud of all that they have achieved and we are delighted to have been part of this exciting year of fundraising. We are forever grateful for the support they have given us, not just the financial contribution but also the awareness they have raised amongst friends, family and their clients. Through this support, we are able to continue providing the care and support to the people of Lincolnshire and ensure that our patients and their families can make the most of every moment together, thank you.” Chattertons are looking forward to another year of fundraising for their Charity of the Year 2016. Staff have chosen The Brain Tumour Charity in memory of their colleague Sophie. Full details are available on their website www. chattertons.com.

Choir’s future secure after funding The future of a long running Spalding choir has been secured thanks to funding from South Holland Councillors. Voices Unplugged, a popular community choir based at Broad Street Methodist Church, recently received a much-needed donation of £800. Six Councillors – Gary Taylor, Jane King, Robert Clark, Elizabeth Sneath, Jack McLean and George Aley – used their designated ward budgets to stump up the funds. “We are thrilled to get this donation and extremely grateful to the Councillors for offering to help us, it’s a wonderful gesture. “The donation means we can continue to meet regularly and

perform concerts over the next year or so. We have over 40 members from different backgrounds and they are delighted with the news.” Cllr Taylor said: “We were aware of the choir and their excellent reputation locally so when we heard they were in need of support, we were happy to help out. “I hope that the donation enables them to continue their fantastic work.” South Holland Councillors regularly use their designated ward budgets to help community groups and worthy causes across the district. Voices Unplugged are always on the lookout for new members. For further details about the group contact Kate Dickens on 01775 420953. SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk |

Special Educational Needs Students put Horticulture Skills to use at Burghley House Burghley Park welcomed students from New College Stamford’s Skills for Work and Living department last week where they were complimenting their learning with hands on experience maintaining trees and shrubbery. Putting what they have learnt at the college’s Horticultural Centre in to practice, students were challenged to remove the protective guards from the trees across Burghley woodland to allow them to grow correctly. They also experienced pruning the lower branches to ensure the trees have a good ‘form’ and provide future generations with high quality timber. Skills for Living student Michael Munro said, “I enjoyed the freedom of working outside and making a positive difference.” Working alongside Peter Glassey, Head

of Forestry, Park and Gardens at Burghley House students gained a valuable insight in to real life horticulture work whilst getting hands on experience. Their hard work has seen the students

New look for SHDC website Using South Holland District Council’s website is about to become quicker and easier following an extensive re-vamp. The new look site has been designed to make it simple for users to find exactly what they’re looking for and soon residents will be able to pay online for a new pilot garden waste collection scheme. Instead of having a lengthy A to Z content guide like the previous design, the new site splits content into easy to navigate sections using eye-catching icons while retaining a search facility. Deputy Leader Malcolm Chandler said: “We’ve recently started our Digital Transformation programme, which is a four year project and will see some significant beneficial changes. “The new look website tells you exactly what you need to know, makes finding what you are looking for simple and means that booking or paying for services online is even easier than before. “We are proud of the new look and are confident that residents will like it too. We also welcome any feedback.” Under each section content is then divided up into individual areas such as housing, planning and building control and refuse and recycling. The site also displays a live feed of South Holland District Council’s Twitter account, a calendar highlighting forthcoming events and meetings as well as the council’s latest news releases. The new look website can be visited at www.sholland. gov.uk 6 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

being invited back to Burghley later on in the spring and summer where they will engage in other activities assisting the gardens team at Burghley House. The students are currently studying Skills for Work and Living courses that are specifically designed to help you develop your personal and social skills, literacy and numeracy skills and independent living skills for those with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. Student Connor Moloney said “I felt quiet nervous because I have never been to a real job placement before but I enjoyed the responsibility”. Lincolnshire ladies wanted for This Girl Can and Sport Relief campaign Lincolnshire Sport and Sport England’s This Girl Can campaign has teamed up as part of a national drive to raise money for Sport Relief. Sports clubs, groups and organisations across the county are hosting fundraising events throughout March to encourage more women and girls to take part in sport. Janet Inman, Chief Executive Officer at Lincolnshire Sport, said: “Sport England’s This Girl Can campaign is a fantastic way to encourage more women to take part in sport, and we’re huge advocates at Lincolnshire Sport. Since we announced the partnership with Sport Relief last week, we’ve been overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and response we’ve had from the This Girl Can community in Lincolnshire.” Funds raised through Sport Relief will help transform lives across the UK and the world’s poorest communities. The activities in Lincolnshire are part of a national campaign – so women who get sweaty are part of a nationwide effort to do something active and amazing for people in need. Most of the activities in Lincolnshire will take place on Tuesday 8 March – International Women’s Day – or the weekend of Sport Relief, Friday 18 to Sunday 20 March. To help encourage other women to get involved, the This Girl Can team has created an app where you can

upload a personal photo and add one of the special This Girl Can Sport Relief mantras, including: ‘I’m jiggling generously for Sport Relief’, ‘Slow fundraising beats no fundraising’ and ‘I’m donating my red face for Sport Relief’. You can shout about this, and other ways you’re getting involved, by including #ThisGirlCan #SportRelief in all your posts and tweets. Tanya Joseph, This Girl Can campaign director, said: “We’re really thrilled to be joining forces with Lincolnshire Sport and Sport Relief to raise vital funds for people who need help both here and in some of the world’s poorest countries. We know that it can be difficult to find the time and motivation to get out there and be active, so what better way than to do it than helping good causes at the same time. Fundraising is just like exercising; it’s not about how much you raise, or how you do it. What’s important is that you are doing something and having fun. That’s what matters, and it should be celebrated.” Any sports clubs, groups or organisations wanting to get involved with the campaign in Lincolnshire and hold an activity to raise money for Sport Relief, should contact Hayley Cook at Lincolnshire Sport on 01522 730 325 or email communications@ lincolnshiresport.com.

Councillors help football team A junior football team took to the field in a brand new kit recently – thanks to three South Holland Councillors. Pinchbeck Junior Girls Under 13’s were able to get a full kit of shirts, shorts, socks and tracksuit tops after Councillors Sally Slade, Elizabeth Sneath and James Avery donated £500 from their designated ward budgets. The councillors recently presented the girls with a certificate before watching them in action. Mike Bracegirdle, the team’s coach, said: “When I first asked Sally Slade about support for the girl’s team, the reply came back very

quickly that they would love to help us. “Everyone at the club thought it was a great gesture, especially offering us £500, which is a great deal of money. “There are 18 girls in the under 16’s and 14 in the under 13’s team, though any girl who wants to play is always welcome. “We entered both teams into the Girls only League, the S-tech Cambridgeshire Women’s and Girls Football League and needed a kit for them. “It is difficult to keep asking local companies and individuals to support the club with donations for kit,

so the money has helped to turn a group of interested girls into a fully formed football team, all playing regularly and loving every minute of it.” Cllr Slade said: “We are always happy to help local causes and we hope that the team will enjoy wearing their new kit.” South Holland Councillors regularly use their designated ward budgets to support community groups and good causes across the district. Make sure you’re registered to vote South Holland District Council wants to encourage anyone not yet registered to vote to go online now to register. On Thursday 5 May 2016 voters in South Holland will go to the polls to elect a Police and Crime Commissioner for Lincolnshire. Anyone who isn’t registered to vote won’t be able to take part and have their say. The deadline to register to vote in this election is Monday 18 April 2016. The good news is that it only takes a few minutes to register online at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote. It’s a chance to join the thousands of people across the UK

being encouraged to register this week. Anna Graves, Electoral Registration Officer for South Holland, said: “Anyone not yet registered to vote should do so as soon as possible so they can have their say on issues that affect their day-to-day lives. “Young people, students and people who move frequently are much less likely to be registered to vote so #NVRD is as important as ever.” Local residents can get a paper copy of the registration form by contacting the electoral registration office on 01775 761161.

Nick’s

Notes

If you would like to contact Nick with a specific question, please email info@simplyspalding.co.uk

Nick Worth, The Deputy Leader of South Holland District Council, gives you an insight as to what is happening in and around Spalding and the surrounding villages A week in the life of an executive Councillor is full of challenges and covers a huge variety of subjects, which is why I enjoy it so much – every day is different. As an example at the time of writing I started the week at a Finance and Resources meeting at Boston College where I am a governor. Simply put, this looked at whether we had met our financial targets for the quarter and were on target for the year and picking up any issues on the way. This was followed by an informal meeting of the Lincolnshire County Council Executive to discuss the budget and how we were proposing to deal with the serious reduction in funding from central government and also proposed County Boundary changes as proposed by the Boundary Commission, reducing the number of Councillors from 77 to 70. Mid-week I attended a Lincoln University Graduation ceremony at Lincoln Cathedral. I was also delighted to hear that Chris Penney, former Chairman of the Holbeach Academy had been made an Honorary Fellow – hugely deserved. This was followed by a debate at The Collection in Lincoln on the future of Archives and in particular Lincolnshire Archives. The week continued with the signing off of the Library Contract to Greenwich Leisure, a meeting in South Holland with client officers, Deputy Leaders and Finance Member from East Lindsey and South Holland, dealing with Compass Point Business Services (all of our back office services such as I.T., H.R., Customer Services and Revenues and Benefits). This was followed by the final celebratory event for the Magna Carta 800 celebrations, put on by the Lincoln MP, Karl McCartney. I was then in attendance at the South Holland Planning Chairman’s Panel which is a non decision making panel looking at, in my case, a local planning application for a change of use of a local pub back to residential.

Then onto my local community gym in Holbeach St Marks to do their banking (part of my local ward member work) and then seeing our South Holland community and health team in action talking to employees at the Bakkavor Pizza factory about healthier lifestyles, which was a interesting venue considering what they were making! I finished off the week by attending an impressive presentation to two former soldiers with the Legion of Honour from the French Consul. A very moving and proud occasion and only hope I am that spritely at the age of 97! Coming up this month, I have meetings of the County Executive, where I have papers coming on the future of Lincolnshire Archives, The future of the Heritage Service (all positive) and changes to the structure of the Coroners Services, which comes under my County portfolio. There is a meeting of the Historic Lincoln Partnership looking at cultural and heritage events and activities in the future, not just for Lincoln, but the whole of Lincolnshire, with the aim of boosting the overall tourism economy of the area. Regular Deputy Leader meetings at South Holland with myself and Cllr Malcolm Chandler and the Chief Executive pick up on briefings about the Greater Lincolnshire Devolved governance proposals, the Greater Lincolnshire Local Enterprise Partnership and developments around our recent membership of the Greater Cambridgeshire, Greater Peterborough Enterprise Partnership, all of which have major economic and infrastructure benefits to the South Holland area. Hopefully that will give you some insight into what an executive councillor does on a regular basis – they always say, variety is the spice of life!

Advice

Help with mental health problems Going to your GP If you’ve got a mental health problem, see your GP. You will often be able to get the support you need without having to see anyone else. When GPs diagnose mental health problems, they might suggest a number of things to help:

but you’ll need expert advice first – see under Further Help at the end of this article. You can find more information about getting support in the workplace on the mental health campaign Time to change website at www.time-to-change.org.uk.

• you might be referred to a community psychiatric nurse for counselling, or support at home • you might be prescribed medication like antidepressants or tranquillisers. Don’t be afraid to ask for information about these drugs, such as how they will help, how long you will have to take them, if they have any side effects and if there is any risk of you becoming addicted to them • your GP might refer you to a specialist in a community mental health team, for example a psychiatrist, or recommend admission to hospital. If your GP has diagnosed a particular problem, ask them to explain why. Ask for information about the condition and if there’s a local support group for people who have it. Local support groups often provide practical advice. If you disagree with your GP’s diagnosis, you can ask for a second opinion but your doctor could refuse to refer you if they don’t think it’s necessary. Medical records Mental health is a sensitive subject and you might be worried about having details put on your medical records. If your GP doesn’t prescribe any treatment, you can ask them not to record the problem in your medical notes. If details are put in your notes, ask to see them and check that the information is accurate. Your

GP can refuse to show you the records if they think it’s not in your interests to see them. No-one else, including members of your family, can see your medical records without your consent. However, in very serious cases, someone else might be appointed to deal with your affairs and they could see your records if the GP agrees, without your consent. Social services If you’re having difficulty coping at home because of a mental health problem, contact your local social services department. You can also contact social services on behalf of someone else. Social services provide community care services such as home helps, day care services, meals on wheels or care in a care home. They will assess what support you need and decide if you’re entitled to any services. To find the contact details of social services, look under ‘S’ in your local phone directory. Unfair treatment at work because of mental illness It may be against the law to treat you unfairly at work because of a mental health problem. It may also be against the law if you’re harassed at work because of your mental illness. Depending on the level of your problem, this could count as disability discrimination. You can take action about disability discrimination,

Financial help If you can’t work because of your mental health problem, you might get financial help (benefits) like Statutory Sick Pay, Income Support, or Employment and Support Allowance. You may also get Personal Independence Payment, or if you’re 65 or over, Attendance Allowance. Make sure you’re getting all the financial help that you’re entitled to. There are special rules about your benefits if you’re in hospital for longer than a certain period. Further Help Citizens Advice Bureaux To find your nearest CAB, including those that give advice by e-mail, look under C in your phone book. The National Association for Mental Health (Mind) Call the information line on 0300 123 3393. Their website is www.mind.org.uk. They can put you in touch with local support groups. Equality Advisory Support Service (EASS) If you have experienced discrimination, you can get help from the EASS discrimination helpline. The number is 0800 444 205. The Equality and Human Rights Commission Guidance about disability discrimination from the Equality and Human Rights Commission. Their website is www.equalityhumanrights. com. GOV.UK There is a useful government website at www. gov.uk. This has a lot of information for people with disabilities, including people with mental health problems.

School News

Calling teachers, PTA members, pupils… Do you have exciting news at your school? If you would like to share your school news with the local residents please send details to editor@simplyspalding.co.uk

Moulton Chapel Primary School The children of Oak Class (years 5 and 6) at Moulton Chapel Primary School were been invited by Tesco to take part in an interactive online field trip on Thursday 21st January 2016. This was an exciting opportunity for the children to experience a tour of local farms and to talk to farmers about local produce. After the virtual tour, the Moulton Chapel children, and children from the four other schools took part in a question and answer discussion via a webcam chat. This was a fantastic experience and enjoyed by all! Here are some quotes from the children at Moulton Chapel: “Really fun – food tasting”

Weston Hills CofE Primary School The start of the new year has been busy in school. We have had a visit from the Dogs Trust with an assembly and class workshops telling children about the wonderful work that they do in looking after and rehoming dogs that have been abandoned or given up. We are having a visit in school from Ark Farm at the beginning of February. We won a competition at the “Kids Country” day at the East of England Showground last year, and are very much looking forward to welcoming them and the animals into school. Ark Farm specialise in bringing a variety of friendly farm animals into schools, nurseries, etc.,

delivering a real hands-on educational and tactile experience for children. All classes participated in Bird Watch Week in school (the last week of January). Children are busy auditioning and rehearsing for the whole school production – our version of “Much Ado About Nothing” which will take place in February. Mr. Gernert from Act II is again directing this for us. Agilitas have organised several tournaments which our Year 5 & 6 children have participated in: Athletics, Quicksticks Hockey, Netball, and are looking forward to taking part in a Dance Showcase at the South Holland Centre.

“Liked seeing different schools that are participating” “Good for learning – we know how food gets from the field to the shops” They enjoyed the mix of curriculum subjects and being able to use their English, Maths, DT and of course Science skills in one lesson. They definitely would like to do it again. The experience has helped to promote healthy eating amongst the children. For any extra information you can browse the website at www.eathappyproject.com/farm-to-fork/ . If you would like to watch the lesson you will be able to stream it from www.eathappyproject.com/online-field-trips/long-leeks/.

Ayscoughfee Hall School Year 3 recently enjoyed a Roman Day with professional historians and actors, dressing up as everything from gladiators to goddesses, making shields and exploring Ancient Roman myths. Year 2 children visited Spalding Fire Station where they were shown a DVD about fire safety, tried on items of fire fighting uniform and were able to sit in the cab of a fire engine discovering the purpose of the many different items of equipment on board. The children in Year 1 are looking forward to a visit from the police (in an educational rather than professional capacity!) and reception class to a visit from a Paramedic. The juniors travelled to Birmingham to take part in the celebration of ‘Young Voices’ with thousands of other children from around the UK. They also enjoyed a morning of workshops with award winning author Edward Trayer, who spoke about his writing and how the children could develop story beginnings and plots. The whole school were thrilled to be visited by a member of Zoolab, who brought a number of creatures to show. These included a corn snake, African pygmy hedgehog and a tarantula. The children were allowed to handle some of the animals (with some being rather more popular than others) and learnt a lot about their habits and habitats. IN ASSOCIATION WITH

Pets Corner

Pets On the Move - Keeping Safe On Car Trips It’s guaranteed you’ll need to take a journey with your pet at some point, even if it’s just for their annual check up. Here are some tips to minimise stress and keep you all safe on the move Cats Cats should always be transported in an enclosed cat carrier. Many varieties are available from plastic washable carriers through to soft canvass carriers. If you are unsure come and talk to us in store. Whatever your preference, ensure all hinges and connecting parts are secure every time you transport your cat. To minimise stress, cover the basket and don’t allow dogs to sniff the carrier in the vets.

Dogs Dogs can cause accidents if not securely restrained in a vehicle. Luckily it’s easy to do! Boot guards are available for most car models and ensure your dog remains safely

in place, or you can seek out a dog car harness. The harness section clips around your dog’s chest and then into the seat belt mechanism. Older dogs often need help getting into the car. If you can’t lift your pooch buy a foldable ramp to help walk him up and down.

Small Mammals Small mammals such as rabbits can be safely moved in a cat carrier, but you will need something smaller for a hamster or gerbil. Purpose made transporters are available. Always ensure their heads cannot get through the wire or plastic spacing as it will injure them.

Fish Transport your fish in specifically manufactured fish bags placed in a cardboard box. Ensure there are no sharp objects and take a spare bag of water in case of emergencies. Use water from the tank and when you return home acclimatise your fish by floating the bag in the fish-tank.

Birds If possible transport your bird in its cage but remove objects that could fall and cause injury. If their home cage is too big, you can buy small bird transportation cages.

Safety First! - Don’t allow children to open a cage no matter how much the pet cries. They are not safe in a moving car and if outside they may get lost. - All pet carriers should be secured with a seatbelt just in case you need to brake heavily. - Try to maintain a steady temperature during your journey. Birds and fish are particularly sensitive to temperature changes. - Don’t leave pets unattended, but if you must leave them for a minute lock all the doors to avoid pet theft. Always be aware of your pet’s actions when you are travelling and ensure they are securely restrained in the car. With a little amount of pre-planning your journey will be safe and less stressful for you both.

Year of the English Garden

Gardens help shine global travel spotlight on Burghley England’s greatest Elizabethan house is gearing up for a bumper season as the ‘Year of the English Garden’ helps make Lincolnshire’s Burghley House one of 2016’s top travel picks

T

his year marks the 300th anniversary of the birth of Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, regarded as the ‘father of landscape architecture’, and Burghley’s connections have helped it feature among top 2016 travel hotspots from the likes of National Geographic Traveller and Le Monde. Believed to be his longest commission, during which he not only landscaped the grounds but also constructed buildings, Brown later recalled his work at the house – on the edge of the Georgian stone town of Stamford - as “25 years of pleasure”. Centuries after Brown worked his magic on the landscape, the original views and vistas he created are being restored and visitors will be able to enjoy his landscaping vision in all its glory during the Tercentenary, being marked with a host of events across the country in 2016. With Burghley picked out as one of the highlights, the anniversary celebrations have already made England a top travel pick globally. National Geographic Traveler’s ‘Best of the World’ list included ‘Capability Brown’s Gardens’, featuring Burghley, while French newspaper Le Monde also picked ‘English Gardens,’ mentioning Burghley, as one of their must-see places in 2016. Along with restored views in the free-to-enter parkland, visitors can follow a self-guided trail revealing Brown’s landscaping work, including the famous Lion Bridge, and discover more about his work in a special exhibition ‘Capability’ Brown at Burghley’ within the House. Burghley is also home to one of only two portraits of Brown, on display in the State Rooms. But there is plenty more to welcome visitors in 2016. As well as the usual mix of events, Gardens and free-flow tours of the House with its huge collection of treasures, 2016 once again sees the return of Burghley Film Festival (27-31 July) featuring classic movies, Hollywood blockbusters and children’s favourites. This year promises even more film fun with major movies lined up alongside BBQ food, themed cocktails and family entertainment. Film titles will be revealed in February with tickets going on sale from March. This year also sees another royal celebration as the nation marks The Queen’s 90th birthday and Burghley – built by the first Queen Elizabeth’s chief minister William Cecil - will commemorate this major milestone, inlcuding a floral tribute to Her Majesty in the annual Flower Festival (1-9 October) themed on The Royal Households of Europe. For youngsters there will be a 24 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

chance to become a Queen, or King, for the day during summer workshops. Foodie fans will enjoy Burghley’s Fine Food Markets staged in the cobbled courtyard with the house as spectacular backdrop (Spring: 9 & 10 April, Mid-Summer: 25 & 26 June, Summer: 28 & 29 August, Christmas: 26 & 27 November) while among the most popular annual events returning in 2016 is the 12th annual Battle Proms, one of the UK’s premier picnic proms, offering an evening of soul stirring classical music (9 July). Ending the season will be the Burghley Pumpkin Trail (15 - 30 October) and Spooky Tours (17 - 31 October) - which this year will see new routes and even more spooky surprises – while Christmas at Burghley will be the biggest yet, featuring festive food and a craft fair. The House and Gardens re-open on Saturday, 19 March 2016 until Sunday, 31st October 2016, For full details of opening times, all events and to book online tickets, visit www.burghley.co.uk or telephone 01780 752451.

Choosing a nursery

Choosing the right nursery for your child If you choose to take your child to nursery or pre-school, how do you go about making the decision about where to send them? Everyone has different criteria, so where do you start?

F

or many people, the first thing they do when considering nurseries is to ask the people around them – gaining a personal recommendation can be invaluable to some parents but be careful that the person doing the recommending has the same goals as you. For some parents the educational aspects are the most important thing when choosing a nursery, for others it might be that their child’s creativity is given centre-stage, and others may feel that a fast paced, busy environment suits their child best. The great thing is that you know your child best of all so are best placed to decide which nursery will suit them best. By all means begin by taking a look at recent Ofsted reports but nothing comes close to actually paying a visit. A quick call to the nursery will tell you not only if they have space but get a time booked in to visit. When you visit make sure you take your child! You will be able to tell how well they get on while you are there and if they are likely to enjoy it there. Make sure you are looking and listening very carefully when you are there – starting from the outside! What does the nursery building look like? Is it secure? Does the outdoor play equipment look of good quality and well cared for? It might surprise you how much you actually pick up on before you have even gone through the door.

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN When you get inside look at the facilities – how to the toys and play areas look? Is there a kitchen onsite and if so are all the meals prepared there? Do they use fresh produce or frozen? What are the menus like? Ask about a typical day to find out what your child will be doing. Find out also about how much time they will get to spend outside. Ask about how many of the staff are qualified – there are national guidelines on this but some nurseries will go over and above. Look at the leadership team (often the nursery manager and senior staff) and decide if they look like a strong team. Strong teams will ensure the smooth running of a nursery which can only be of benefit to the children within them. Perhaps most importantly of all, look at the children. Do they look happy, engaged and well stimulated? Are they listening well to the staff? What sort of activities are they taking part in? Look at the variety on offer to them and it should start to show you if it would fit in with your child. Come away and ask your child what they thought – did they enjoy it? Would they like to go back? If you had a good feel for the place and your child seemed to enjoy it then a taster session should follow next. Just remember that at any point you can change your mind – going with your gut feel is often a valuable experience!

“Perhaps most importantly of all, look at the children. Do they look happy, engaged and well stimulated?”

“When you visit make sure you take your child! You will be able to tell how well they get on while you are there and if they are likely to enjoy it there.”

Spalding’s Blue Plaques

When the famous came to town A quick walk around the town centre and surrounding streets will take you back in time to learn about some of Spalding’s most famous visitors and inhabitants

I

“A stroll around the town centre will reveal four out of the five plaques and round the corner Spring Street has the fifth.”

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

f you’ve never heard of them, Spalding and District Civic Society are a busy bunch. With the town’s best interests at the centre of everything they do you will often find them involved in projects such as monitoring local planning applications, liaising with the council and offering ideas for regenerating the more run-down sites. On top of all this they have an ongoing project putting up blue plaques to commemorate the famous people who have lived and stayed in the town. A stroll around the town centre will reveal four out of the five plaques (similar to the English Heritage blue plaques found up and down the country) and round the corner Spring Street has the fifth. If you get the time it is a nice route to see them all and will hopefully spark your interest to find out more about the people who are named on them. So who has been commemorated and why? Jimi Hendrix (can be seen at the Red Lion, Market Place). Almost 50 years ago Hendrix played at one of the UK’s first Rock Festivals, Barbeque ’67. Playing alongside other bands such as Pink Floyd and Cream many people in the town still remember the festival – there is many a tale to hear from that particular Bank Holiday Monday! Jean-Jacques Rousseau (can be seen at the White Hart, Market Place). A world away from Rock festivals, Rousseau was an 18th Century writer, philosopher and composer. A controversial figure throughout his live, he visited Spalding in 1767 for a stay at the White Hart Hotel. William Booth (can be seen at Boots Opticians, Bridge Street). Booth was the founder of the Salvation Army which he set up while living in London. He lived

in Spalding for two years where he could be found preaching at churches from Spalding to Boston. Frank Pick (can be seen at the Halifax, Bridge Street). Pick was a British Transport administrator who is most famous for commissioning artwork which would form the London Underground’s corportate identity and many of his designs are still in use today, from the instantly recognisable London Underground map to station signs. He was born in the town. Peter Connolly (can be seen at Spring Street). Living in Bridge Street for 25 years, Peter was an accomplished illustrator as well as a scholar of the ancient world, specialising in Greek and Roman military equipment. He was also an experimental archaeologist, testing out theories of how the ancient world worked for himself. The writer of many books, which he illustrated himself, his passion for his subject made him an expert in his field.

Have your say in planning the future of South East Lincolnshire During January and February residents of South Holland District and Boston Borough had their say on where new homes, businesses and roads should be built in the future as part of the South East Lincolnshire Local Plan.

The 16 drop-in sessions held across the area were attended by over 1,000 people and we received plenty of helpful feedback as a result. n This included concerns about the ability of existing community and physical infrastructure to cope with new development. n Questions were also raised over whether the large number of houses proposed is justified. n While the delivery of the Spalding Western Relief Road is supported in principle, there is concern about its impact on traffic levels if it is delivered piecemeal. n Further work is planned to help address these important issues.

The public consultation on the draft Local Plan has now finished and we would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who gave their views.

What happens next? n All of the comments received will be taken to the South East Lincolnshire Joint Strategic Planning Committee in April 2016 so that the key themes and issues raised through the consultation can be discussed by Councillors. n Changes will be made where appropriate to the Local Plan. n A six week public consultation will then be held on the Publication Draft of the Local Plan later this year where we will be inviting comments on whether the Local Plan is ‘sound’ and ‘legally compliant’. n The Local Plan will be submitted to the Planning Inspectorate for Examination by the end of the year with adoption scheduled for early 2017. To keep up-to-date with the progress of the Local Plan please visit our dedicated website: www.southeastlincslocalplan.org SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk |

Kitchens

Making your kitchen truly yours Once you have chosen your kitchen, what are the things you can do to add that personal touch?

C

hoosing the right kitchen for you can take time. For starters there is a huge amount of choice out there. From the type of kitchen (traditional, contemporary, rustic, the list goes on) to deciding on layouts, many people now use the help of Computer Aided Design (CAD) drawings to best visualise what the end result will look like. Working together with your kitchen supplier and installer will ensure that your kitchen will be as functional and versatile as you imagined. With more choice than ever it is important to think about the function of your kitchen – what do you use it for the most – just cooking or entertaining too? Is space an issue for you – will you need to look into clever spacesaving ideas and appliances? What changes and advances have been made since your last kitchen was installed – what would you like to do differently? When you start along these lines you will often find that more questions will be thrown up than answers but it will lead you to a thoroughly researched decision. Most kitchen suppliers or fitters will offer a full measuring service and will then be able to advise on the best layouts and materials based on the information you give them. They will also be able to tell you what will work based on your budget and the most effective way to spend the money you are putting to it. Once the kitchen has been decided on you can turn your attention to putting the finishing touches to it, starting with appliances. Once again this will be decided based on how you use your kitchen – if you don’t cook that often or there are only a couple of you in the house it may be that buying a huge range cooker isn’t the right decision for you. Also if you are a large family then a small, built-in refrigerator will not suit your needs. If you are style conscious then your kitchen is a great place to express yourself. Contemporary hobs and extractors can bring a stylish aspect to your kitchen and the trend for large

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

“...the trend for large American-style fridge-freezers can also add a modern flair.”

American-style fridge-freezers can also add a modern flair. Your walls are also a good way to personalise your kitchen. You can choose to tile from floor to ceiling, or paint or even paper and everything in between. There is a wide selection of tiles to choose from in all shapes, sizes and colours. You can even choose the colour of your grout for a different look. Many tile places offer a tile loan service whereby you can take a tile home and look at how it will look on the wall. It’s a good way of deciding if a certain look will work. While you look at walls take a look at the windows as well and have a think about blinds. Most types of blinds work really well in kitchens and are a good way of introducing a secondary colour or pattern. It is always a good idea to get your windows professionally measured to ensure that your blinds are the right size. As well as looking at your kitchen design look up! What are your lights like? Will they be in keeping with your new kitchen? Putting in new lights at the same time as your kitchen is being installed will save you time and trouble afterwards! If you are having any lights in the kitchen units themselves then speak to your installers about using their electrician. Finally it is worth planning what you are going to do while the installation is taking place – where are you going to prepare food and where are you going to eat? Suddenly being without a kitchen, even for a short amount of time can quickly become a problem. Check with your installers how long they are going to take and plan accordingly – safe in the knowledge that soon you will be cooking in your new, personalised kitchen. ❱ BY TIM BARNES-CLAY, MOTORING JOURNALIST

s a far as Jags go, this isn’t the fastest or the biggest – but it is a looker and it makes a change to the similarlysized, and rather ubiquitous, BMW 3 Series. The Jaguar XE comes brimming with technology, ultra-efficient engines and sharp-suited aesthetics. Its smooth body hides a construction that’s 75 per cent aluminium - a material not only sturdier than the steel used by its rivals, but also lighter. Handling is first-class, too. That lightweight physique comes into its own here. Even if you pick the Comfort suspension setup (you can also choose from Sport and Adaptive), the XE feels quick to respond. Inside, you’ll find the InControl infotainment system. This brings the XE level with its challengers, like BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz and Lexus, straight from the off. You can even fine-tune the climatecontrol, play around with the door locks and start the engine with your smart phone! A sporty drive is key to any Jaguar and that energetic feel starts from the driver’s seat. Like most models that went before it, the XE cossets you, thanks to a raised transmission tunnel and high window line. Another keystone of the Jaguar experience, a sense of sumptuousness, comes in the form of costly materials covering most of the cabin – leather upholstery is in all but the rudimentary model. To call the XE spacious is stretching the truth but, as alluded to earlier, it’s comparable with the room you would find in its BMW 3 Series opponent. In the real world, that means there’s plenty of capacity for adults up front, but not so much in the rear. There, legroom equals what you get in the German foe, but the low roofline and seemingly tighter interior

36 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

impacts on upper body comfort. The Jaguar also offers largely the same interior storage space as you would expect from any of its adversaries. There are pockets in all doors, a pair of cup-holders in the front and a cubby that doubles up as a front-centre armrest. And with 455-litres of boot space you’ll easily get your golf bags in! Like most modern motors, the XE comes with a full set of active and passive safety technologies to keep you out of harm’s way. Complementing the standard traction and stability control is the innovative All Surface Progress Control – a system that instinctively moves the car off from a standstill in greasy conditions to thwart wheel spin. On a long commute, the XE is more comfortable than the BMW 3 Series. Indeed, however you choose to spec your Jaguar, it feels clued-in and up to the challenge. Out on the motorway, the car is hushed. In fact, it’s so quiet, engine noise is almost non-existent. You can choose between an eight-speed auto ‘box or a six-speed manual gearbox. I drove the 2.0 i4 180PS model, fitted with the latter do-it-yourself cogchanger. The gears feel perfectly harmonised with the engine’s power band and the sharp-witted nature of the XE. The turbocharged diesel – fitted with a 178bhp four-cylinder 1999cc power-unit - feels effortless and refined in its operation. It shifts from 0-62mph in 7.4 seconds and tops out at 140mph, returning around 67mpg. After a few hundred miles in the saddle, it’s very clear that Jaguar has accomplished an amazing balance between ride comfort and handling prowess. Where the BMW 3 Series sits on the dynamics side of the fence and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class prefers luxury, the XE achieves both.
