Welcome to the January issue Happy New Year! I am sitting here writing my welcome thinking once you receive the magazine through your door, Christmas will be all over! I love the break over Christmas and New Year, we try to make as few plans as possible so we can take the time to relax and enjoy being at home. For me Christmas is all about family, we tend to alternate between my family and the in-laws each year. Either way it’s a house full and that’s what I love, a busy festive period. But now it’s all about the new year and as we head into 2017 we can look back on the past year and plan our resolutions for the next one. There’s all the usual ones – lose weight, learn a new skill, get fit, get a better work/life balance but mine is only for a month and it is to cut down on my phone use. We all spend so much time with these small devices in our hand that we miss out on what’s happening in front of us, so I am deleting any social media apps from my phone for January and seeing how much time I gain…I think I’m going to be surprised. I haven’t managed to convince my husband to do the same as yet! This is a bigger than normal issue as stuffed full of features to help inspire you. We look at Pet Ownership, getting prom ready as well as weighing up if it’s better to move or improve. This time of year is often a period when we contemplate packing up and moving, so make sure you check out our guide before you potentially make such a costly decision. Finally I would like to say a huge thank you to our team of distributors who do such a great job of getting the magazine to you every month come rain or shine and our loyal advertisers who use the magazine to promote their business every month, without them we simply wouldn’t be able to produce the magazine. As always we are looking for charities, community groups and events to feature in our local focus, so if you are involved in anything happening locally please get in touch to discuss further. All that’s left for me to say is to have a great month and a very HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Rhianna Berry wins gold at WorldSkills UK 2016 Health and Social Care Competition was presented with a gold medal at a ceremony on Saturday evening (19th November). Rhianna, who is currently studying Level 3 Health and Social Care at Boston College, was initially entered into the competition by her tutor. Reflecting on her success Rhianna said, “I am really overwhelmed - I don’t think it has sunk in that I am now number one in the UK for Health and Social Care! I know that it’s an amazing achievement, I have thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience and the hard work has definitely paid off. I am so grateful to my Lecturers at Boston College – they all have different industry backgrounds and so much experience which means I have learnt a broad range of hands-on skills and in-depth knowledge as part of my course, but they have also given me excellent support, encouragement and additional training on specific topics, which meant I was well prepared to compete at national level. This experience has definitely improved my professional and clinical skills, as well as my communication, confidence, and methods in caring for people, which will really help me in my future career. I’m now excited and focussed on attending the four university interviews I have been offered with the aim of securing a place on a nursing degree when I
Rhianna Berry, 18, who is currently studying Level 3 Health and Social Care at Boston College, was awarded first place in the Health and Social Care competition at the WorldSkills UK 2016 National Finals, the UK’s largest skills and careers event for young people. The Health and Social Care competition, that was organised by Profiles4Care and sponsored by the NHS Leadership Academy, aims to find the best adult health and social care professionals in the country. Rhianna secured her place in the National Finals of the WorldSkills UK Health and Social Care Competition after scoring highly in the regional round, and went on to compete against seven others, in-front of thousands of visitors, at the NEC in Birmingham. As part of the competition Rhianna took part in eight separate scenarios in which she was presented with a care plan and then had to use her practical skills and knowledge to react to each situation appropriately and provide professional care as if it was real-life. The tasks were based on themes that included: Diabetes, Parkinson’s Wound Dressing, Vital Signs, Dementia, Learning Disabilities Drugs and Alcohol, Stoma Care Infection Control, Basic Life Support, and Mental Health Safeguarding. Independent judges assessed the work of competitors, and selected 1st, 2nd and 3rd place for each of the 61 skills categories, within which Rhianna

have completed my course.” As part of her Health and Social Care course, Rhianna has not only received hands-on skills training at Boston College where industry standard facilities include a dedicated clinical room with equipment such as: a hospital bed, hoist, blood pressure cuff, pulse oximeter, and much more, but the College’s excellent links with employers has also enabled her, and her fellow students, to undertake an industry work placement of over 100 hours – gaining first hand, real-life experience. Following her success, Rhianna has already been invited back to attend the UK final next year to take on the role of a ‘Skills Champion’ to inspire those competing as well as the crowds of young people from schools that attend the event. Rhianna is now awaiting her final score, which could also earn her the opportunity to compete at international level for WorldSkills Russia 2019. NEWS Lord Porter calls for improved funding for pancreatic cancer research Lord Porter of Spalding is spreading the word about the vital need for more funding for pancreatic cancer research, and calling on local people to know the symptoms of the disease, after he attended a reception at Westminster hosted by the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for pancreatic cancer. At the event, held on Monday 21st November to mark Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month, Gary heard that around 665 people in the East Midlands are diagnosed with the disease each year. In the UK, just five per cent of patients will live for five years or more after diagnosis. Yet, over the last decade, the disease has only received one per cent of the UK’s cancer research budget. The APPG also heard the results of a recent survey commissioned by Pancreatic Cancer UK, the secretariat of the APPG on the disease, which found that three quarters of people across the UK were unable to name a single symptom (1). Symptoms include tummy pain that can spread to the back, significant and unexplained weight loss, yellow skin or eyes or itchy skin (jaundice), oily floating poo and indigestion. Lord Porter is now joining Pancreatic Cancer UK in encouraging local people to find out more about the disease by
taking part in the charity’s new symptoms quiz at www.pancreaticcancer.org.uk/ symptomsquiz. Gary said: “Pancreatic cancer is a disease which sadly affects many people in the East Midlands, and that’s why I am calling for increased research investment into the disease, and encouraging people to know the symptoms. “It is crucial that this disease attracts more funding for research, so new and more effective tests and treatments can be created. At the same time, we all need to raise awareness of the symptoms of pancreatic cancer. I was shocked to hear how few UK residents are able to name a symptom, but I’m confident that people in South Holland will rise to the challenge of finding out more about the disease this pancreatic cancer awareness month.” Alex Ford, Chief Executive of Pancreatic Cancer UK, who spoke at the APPG on pancreatic cancer reception, said: “We are delighted that Lord Porter has joined us in taking on this tough disease together. So little progress has been made for patients and their families in decades. In fact, survival rates for the disease have barely improved in over 40 years. This is partly due to a pitiful lack of research which has meant we have not seen the developments in tests and treatments which we have in so many other cancers in that time.
Smoke Free South Holland South Holland District Council is committed to encouraging people not to smoke in areas where children play – but we need your help to spread the word by getting online. Our Smoke Free Code has already been supported by many schools, nurseries and play areas with dozens displaying signs designed by creative youngsters. Now we’re starting an online New Year’s resolution, by asking residents to pledge not to smoke around children during 2017. We’ve launched a new Thunderclap campaign and are currently promoting it
The latest jobs figures, released recently, show that the number of people out of work in South Holland and the Deepings continues to fall, with the unemployment rate now down to just 1.4% locally. John Hayes MP said “The continued fall in unemployment in our area is terrific news, and more people in work means more people with the security of a regular pay packet. “South Holland and the Deepings has seen a huge fall in unemployment in recent years - the number of people relying on out-of-work benefits has fallen by 59% since 2010 - and we’ve seen a remarkable growth in the number of new jobs and new businesses. These figures defy expectations but we must, nonetheless, not lose sight of sticking to the economic policies that have made these successes possible. “Additionally, the most recent statistics show that for job creation, South Holland and the Deepings is once again outperforming both the regional and national figures.” John Hayes also hailed the national jobs data, pointing out that the unemployment rate has fallen to an 11-year low and there are a record number of people now in work – including 461,000 more than at this time last year. John said “with wages rising too, up 2.3% over the year, and inflation still low, there is much to welcome as the Government continues to provide greater economic security for hard-working people. The number of people in full-time work is up by 2 million since 2010, the claimant count is close to the lowest it’s been since 1975, and youth unemployment is down by almost 350,000 in the past 6 years.”

John Hayes MP welcomes further fall in unemployment locally
Councillor Anthony Casson, South Holland District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Food, Health and Safety, said: “Pledging your support will only take a few seconds of your time. All you need to do is press the ‘support with Facebook/Twitter’ button on the Thunderclap page. It is totally free of charge and you do not give any personal details away. “We are committed to developing safer and healthier communities and will continue to develop our Smoke Free Code across the district.”

NEWS Green Sacks are Changing The way green recycling sacks are distributed across South Holland is to change from early next year. Following a recent public survey, South Holland District Council will begin a fairer way of distributing sacks from January 2017. At present all households in the district are entitled to 52 recycling sacks a year, distributed in batches of 26 twice a year. Currently, additional sacks can be picked up for free from the council’s offices in Priory Road, Spalding, as well as from other locations in the district. From January 16th this approach will change and we will only be delivering additional sacks to households. Cllr Roger Gambba-Jones, portfolio holder for Waste Services, said: “We have made it clear that we are not reducing the number of recycling sacks in circulation, but instead want to have a fairer distribution across the district. “It is no secret that the current system of giving additional sacks away gets abused and can also result in lengthy queues at the Priory Road reception. “We always value feedback from the public and have used that information to inform our decisions.” The month-long survey invited residents to answer questions on the current system and have their say on whether it could be improved. Over 73 per cent of respondents said they would like to see a fairer distribution of green sacks in South Holland. And 71 per cent preferred having additional green sacks delivered to their property, rather than making a separate journey to collect them. Just over 78 per cent of respondents felt that having additional sacks delivered would increase recycling in the district. And 84 per cent said they were aware that extra recycling can be placed in other containers such as carrier bags, swing bin liners and cardboard boxes for collection.

NEWS Lincoln College students get taste of military life Students from Lincoln have been given a taste of life as an Army reservist. A group of 22 pupils from Lincoln College aged between 17 and 19 who are studying Public Services, visited 160 (Lincoln) Transport Squadron,158 Regiment Royal Logistics Corps at Sobraon Barracks. The teenagers were able to see demonstrations of weapons, radios and vehicles the squadron use, get a taste for life out in the field and help cook their own dinner alongside Army chefs. Students also took part in a final planning exercise putting skills they’d learnt on the day into practice. Warrant Officer Class One, Nigel O’Leary, of 160 Transport Squadron, said: “It was great to see the students getting involved and learning by taking part in activities. “They’re all interested in going on to careers in public services such as joining the police, fire service or army, and we hope it has given them an insight into what it’s like being in the Armed Forces. “Last year’s event with pupils from the course inspired a couple of the participants to become reservists and we hope this year’s had a similar impact on those that attended.” Reece Betts, who is in this third year of studying Public Services, was one of those who attended. He said: “It’s been a very good day. It showed me the kind of kit the units use and the skills you need to join. It’s made me more excited about the potential for a career in the army.” Neil Carlin, Lecturer in Sports and Public Services at Lincoln College, said: “It was a great opportunity allowing the students to get first-hand experience of the Armed Forces. “It was a wonderful experience for the students and was fantastically relevant in terms of their study programme at college. One of the students who was inspired to become a reservist following last year’s event was Private Kevin Darby who is now a member of 3rd Battalion, Royal Anglian Regiment. This year he was representing his unit showcasing weaponry to the attendees. He said: “Joining the Reserve Forces has been brilliant, it’s the best thing I’ve done. I have been able to do stuff I never thought I would including going on two major camps which was awesome.” 160 Squadron are currently recruiting. Nick Worth, The Deputy Leader of South Holland District Council, gives you an insight as to what is happening in and around Spalding and the surrounding villages
Nick’s Notes
fter the Christmas break, January is one of my favourite times – looking and planning ahead for the New Year and the challenges ahead. Just a couple of months and the spring flowers will be bursting forth giving hope for the coming summer and similarly renewed enthusiasm for taking forward ideas and projects. At South Holland the Council is considering how to make better use of its’ Priory Road Offices, so that the entire ground floor can be given over to a range of public services, giving you our customer, a one stop shop and more efficient service. We already have the Citizens Advice Bureau and South Lincs Voluntary Service working from there, but there are opportunities to include the Department of Work and Pensions, Lincolnshire County Council Social and other Services and a range of other public bodies. If the business case stacks up then this project will move forward over the next year, not only making better use of space, but giving us a return on the initial capital investment, making us savings through additional income generated and giving you an even better service. If you have any thoughts on what services you would like to see in there, please let me know. Also in the New Year we will be launching a Lincolnshire wide Cultural Strategy which is working on Five core themes which connect to some of the most significant challenges facing the county and to which culture and creativity have a unique ability to respond: • Inspiring Children & Young People • Nurturing, Attracting & Retaining Talent • Growing Participation & Wellbeing • Supporting the Economy
• Strengthening Places and Communities The Case for Culture - Strong, distinctive and high quality cultural and creative activity is a key contributor to economic wellbeing in the 21st century. On average, 1 in 11 of all jobs in the UK are now in the Creative Industries. Cultural Tourism is one of the largest and fastest-growing tourism markets. As people become more connected with places and people all around the world cultural activity enables places to stand out, bring people together and create life enhancing moments and memories. Events, festivals and landmark sites, such as Ayscoughfee Hall, The South Holland Centre, The Chain Bridge Forge Blacksmiths, our church’s and Holbeach Cemetery Chapels have a particular role to play in creating a distinctive, local offer. In our area communities put on a huge range of events, including the Pumpkin Festival, Open Arts, country Fayre, music, beer and food festivals, historical enactments, village fetes and carnivals and most recently Christmas Fayre and markets across the districts. All of these make a huge contribution to the local economy and generally to the overall quality of life, with many hundreds of volunteers making these happen, making South Holland such a great place to live and work. The New Year brings new challenges and opportunities to continually improve what we have and do and yes we are certainly not perfect, but we will all be working together over the coming months to make those improvements in our villages, towns and High Streets so that we can all see the benefit. Happy New Year! Nick

Before you buy, there are things you need to think about such as whether you have suitable accommodation or what you’ll do with the pet when you’re away. What to think about Owning a pet is a big responsibility. Think about whether: • you can afford it. The main costs will be food and vets fees • you’re able to look after it appropriately. Some pets need more hands on care than others. For example, dogs should be walked at least twice a day. You must be over 16 years old to buy a pet. What to ask when you buy When you buy a pet, you should always ask the seller questions to make sure you are happy with the animal and that it is healthy. For example: • does it have any health problems? • how old is the animal? • what kind of temperament does it have – you might want to avoid an animal that can be aggressive • is the animal good with children, if you have them? • what kind of care and food does it need?
If the animal has significant health problems, think before you buy it. Having a sick animal can cost a lot of money in vets fees and may also be emotionally distressing. Where to buy Never buy pets sold in the street, including on barrows and markets. It is illegal to sell pets in this way. An individual If you buy a pet from a private seller there may be certain risks and your legal consumer rights are more limited. You may see an advert in a newspaper or in a local shop. If you buy from a private seller, you need to ask the right questions as your legal right depends on what information the seller tells you about the animal. You must ask about the animal’s health. If you buy a dog or puppy, the seller will need a license to breed dogs if during any 12 month period, five or more litters of puppies are born. • Find out more about dog breeding and licences at www.gov.uk Pet shops Check that the pet shop has a licence from the local authority, before you buy. Animals in pet shops should be kept in accommodation that is suitable and clean and provided with appropriate food and drink.

If you think conditions in a pet shop are poor, report the shop to your local council. Charitable rescue centres There are many animal rescue centres that provide adoption services for abandoned or mistreated pets that are rescued. Look in your yellow pages, phone directory, or search online for your local animal rescue centres. The RSPCA/USPCA/ is a well known animal rescue charity with homes all across the UK. However, there are many others. Keeping wild animals You need a licence to keep certain animals that are considered to be wild or dangerous. If you are intending to get a wild animal or a hybrid, find out if you need a licence and how to apply at www.gov.uk.

Children at Ayscoughfee Hall School have had a fun month preparing for Christmas. The choir took part in the Spalding Schools Carol Competition at St. John’s Church and the whole school are looking forward to a fun ‘Sing a Long’ in the School hall on the last Friday of term and to Christmas lunch! Year 5 children spent the day at Burghley House in Stamford learning about Christmas during the Tudor period. They met Henry VIII, learnt some Tudor dances and found out some interesting facts about celebrations 450 years ago. Year 6 meanwhile visited Spalding Baptist Church and had fun with the presentation of ‘Christmas Unwrapped’. They have also been busy with their cycling, taking part in the proficiency course ‘ Bikeability’. Younger children meanwhile have been busy rehearsing their Christmas plays which are

holiday is often one of the biggest buys you make in a year – so it’s important to make sure it’s memorable for all the right reasons. Spending hours searching through guidebooks, internet forums and review sites can give you a good idea about what break is right for you – but there’s no substitute for face-toface honest advice. That’s why you can trust the team at your local Lincolnshire Co-op travel branch. Not only do they pride themselves on giving the best independent recommendations but they have a wealth of experience of different destinations, types of holiday, tour operators and accommodation. Plus, they’re up-to-date on all the issues of the day such as where your money will go furthest in 2017 and where’s safe to visit. Not only that, but Lincolnshire Co-op has been around for 155 years. As well as the security you get from booking with such a long-established name, we’re also signed up to all the relevant financial protection schemes such as ABTA and ATOL. If you’re a dividend card holder, you’ll benefit from money back on your booking, and we often have special promotions on. For extra feel-good factor, when you choose us for your holiday, you’ll also be helping your local community. When a member shops in a Lincolnshire Co-op outlet, we make a donation to good causes in the area through our Community Champions scheme – we raised more than £320,000 last year. So, what are you waiting for? Call into your local branch and we’ll help you find the holiday of your dreams.
Our top tips for 2017 Kate Townsend, Spalding travel branch “Did you know you can book excursions before you get to your destination? It’s a great hasslefree way to make sure your get to tick off all the must-see sites or experiences on your holiday. “We work with a variety of different operators to provide this service and can arrange anything from a desert safari in Dubai to queue-free entry to The Vatican in Rome. It also means you don’t have to budget for excursions as part of your spending money.” www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 15

10% off for Senior Citizen Tuesdays a Andy Molsom of Molsom and Associates, has been nominated for personnel the ‘Optometrist of theon year’ award as part of the Macular Society’s Awards for Excellence. The nomination recognises his exceptionally good practice in the care of people with macular degeneration. Andy Molsom, who was also nominated for the awards in 2013, said: “I am very proud to have been nominated again for this award. It’s a great honour that a patient has thought my care is worthy for this Award of Excellence”. Cathy Yelf, Chief Executive of the Macular Society, said: “It is clear from his nomination that Mr Molsom works hard to improve the lives of people affected by macular degeneration, with excellence in advice and information. We are extremely grateful for his efforts in Spalding.” Age-related macular degeneration affects the central vision and is the most common cause of sight loss in the UK. More people are affected as our population ages. Kathleen Anna Pell, who nominated Mr Molsom for the award, said: “By making sure I had regular examinations on my eyes Mr Molsom quickly noticed the change in my right eye that dry macular had changed to wet macular and arranged treatment without delay.

The latest 3D OCT retinal digital scanner helps us to find those patients who are at risk of sight problems, especially wet AMD, at such an early stage that treatment can make a real difference to retaining good eyesight and with it independence for our patients.” commented Andy Molsom The Macular Society is the national charity for anyone affected by central vision loss. Advice Worth Hearing!!
Y
ou probably have regular check-ups at the dentist and the opticians, but when did you last have your hearing tested? It’s estimated that as many as 1 in 6 people in the UK have some degree of hearing loss, which equates to about 10 million people in the country. Hearing loss usually occurs gradually & can be an inconvenience, can cause embarrassment, depression, isolation and has been linked to mental health issues. It can take between 10 & 15 years to come to terms with it. This is a shame, because the ability to hear sound is one of the most important senses, yet unlike vision & teeth it is often taken for granted. People often try to compensate for this by asking people to repeat themselves, turning the T.V up etc. It is often a friend or family member that notice beforehand. Sound Advice Hearing can help you hear better again and in turn, help improve your quality of life. If I think I have a problem, how can you help? We are a privately run local family business, with full time hearing care centres located in Horncastle, King’s Lynn & Peterborough, we hold day clinics also at Kirton Medical Centre. We are proud to have some of the

most sophisticated testing equipment available and offer FREE hearing tests, and if preferred, full diagnostic hearing assessments in a sound proof environment, or in the comfort of your own home. We provide independent and impartial advice and can provide a FREE hearing aid trial (with no obligation). We are able to create a personalised solution for all your hearing requirements based on lifestyle, cosmetics & importantly - budget. Our business model is based around good old fashioned values with free after- care which is second to none. What other Services do you offer? We also provide a comprehensive wax removal service through irrigation, micro suction & instrumentation. Wax removal is becoming more & more difficult to have administered through some GP surgeries and can sometimes involve frustrating & lengthy delays. We also offer advice on Tinnitus Management & provide custom solutions for noise and hearing protection. Are hearing aids big and clumsy? These days, digital hearing aids can be very discreet & almost undetectable - but they’re still powerful enough to help with even the severest of hearing losses. Most people are amazed at the size & performance of modern hearing aids. They help you hear every day sounds and make it much easier to follow conversations. Your confidence in talking to people should improve & everyday & social occasions will become less of a struggle. Some hearing aids also help reduce certain unwanted background noises & if you have tinnitus, you may find it disturbs you less when you wear a hearing aid. Some hearing aids can connect to telephones, mobile telephones, televisions, computers, IPads etc. For those that find hearing aids fiddly, there are now rechargeable solutions so batteries do not have to be changed.

What makes you different from the competition? We are a local family run business with over 125 years combined experience. We have access to all makes and models and can provide impartial advice accordingly. It’s our combination of an extensive range of products, experience, continuity, in depth testing, dedicated time and attention to detail that is a winner. If you spend time with someone to get their prescription and fitting correct, the quality of the final result will always be superior. We are a Hearing Care Company that is 100% dedicated and focused on hearing alone. How can I tell if I have a hearing problem? Typical indicators include asking people to repeat themselves, struggling to hear in noisy environments, confusing words or misunderstanding what’s being said in conversation or having to turn the T.V up. If you can identify with any of these, then it is important to book your FREE hearing assessment with ourselves by calling one of the numbers above, and we can then assess whether you have any degree of hearing loss.
What should I do next? The most important thing to do is not ignore it! In most cases hearing deteriorates gradually & it often affects people around you more than yourself. Wearing a hearing aid can make a real difference to your quality www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 23

Going Abroad
with your Pets Brits wanting to take their pets abroad used to have to put them in quarantine for a period, causing misery to both the animal and owner. But times have changed, and fortunately, provided you comply with the Pet Travel Scheme (PETS) you can take your dog, cat – or even ferret – abroad with you, so you don’t have face the worry of placing them in quarantine.
What do you need to do? Depending on which country you’re going to, the criteria for the scheme includes: Fitting your pet with a microchip so they can be identified; getting a blood test, vaccination
against rabies, and treatment for tapeworm and ticks – and a certificate to prove this; getting an official PET certificate, and signing a declaration of residency. However, bear in mind that pets can only be vaccinated against rabies once they reach a minimum age, which is typically three months. You’ll need to have all the relevant documentation with you when going abroad, as well as checking that your pet insurance extends to cover overseas. Start organising your pet’s trip at least seven months before you leave, as your pet can’t re-enter the UK within six months of having a blood test, and this has to be done at least a month after the rabies vaccination. You’ll need to renew the passport after two years have passed, as that’s how long the vaccination lasts.
Family Life So what’s the cost? In total, the required vaccinations, blood test and documents cost around £200. If your pet is to travel on a plane, check what extra charges you’ll face. Some airlines allow pets to travel as hand luggage, so they’ll be no extra cost, while others charge a fee – this could be a flat rate, or a sliding scale based on the animal’s weight.
Winter Warmers for Safer Pet Ownership With the New Year here we are truly in the depths of the winter months. We have already been dealing with the shorter day lengths and by using reflective collars, halters and leads we are ensuring visibility to motorists and the like. But what else can we do to improve our pets lot during this cold season? It may not be obvious that slim dogs with short hair can, and do, feel the cold. Without the dense undercoat that many breeds have, for example huskies, they can be susceptible to hypothermia. Maybe you have a very young cat or dog? Maybe they are older? Like children and older people, pets will feel the cold, doubly so if they suffer from arthritis. Indeed, the cold will aggravate conditions like these. Rather than curtail their walks consider getting them a coat; fleecy lined for warmth with a wax outer to help keep them dry. Most dogs will be fine running around exercising but do consider those who just like to mooch around; they can chill easily. With the arthritic cat or dog consider providing a padded bed with a heat pad, or hot water bottle for them to snuggle into; they will thank you for it in the long run! All cats love a warm
24 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk
spot, so do be careful of open fireplaces, wood stoves and radiators as burns are a reality. Worth checking puss’s paws if you suspect she has been too close for comfort! Did you know it is not unusual to see ears, noses and paws with frostbite? Consider the paws of dogs and be aware that snow and ice can ball up between the toes and become quite uncomfortable to walk on. If walking on gritted surfaces be aware that the chemicals and salt added can irritate pads grazed by the grit; and be sure to wash off from underbellies as well as paws when you get home otherwise poisoning can become a reality when your pooch cleans himself after walkies.
It is all too easy as we know to pile on the pounds during the winter months... And this goes for our cats and dogs too! Without a doubt the shorter day lengths, colder and wetter weather mean we do not get out as often or for as long or as regularly as we do in the finer summer months. It is a good idea to monitor your pets weight and food intake and adjust accordingly. Antifreeze poisoning, the dreaded ethylene glycol, is a real and serious threat to our pets (and children) and not uncommonly treated in the winter months. Puddles under cars from over filled radiators or drips left to run down bottles in garages are accessed by both cats and dogs. Sweet tasting and palatable even small amounts cause serious kidney failure and can be fatal. If you suspect ethylene glycol is the cause of your pet’s lethargy do contact your vet, as with all poisoning, the quicker the treatment is started the better the outcome. Finally, please ensure rabbits and guinea pigs hutches are well insulated and out of prevailing winds; ensure they have sufficient bedding to snuggle down into. As with all animals check water supplies are topped up and not frozen. Time to stretch those legs and get out on that walk...happy hiking folks.

Money Sins
MARTIN LE WIS
A
re you a sinner? Financially that is. There are a host of everyday money misdemeanours that millions of people do, costing them thousands, without being aware of it. These aren’t horrors like grabbing a payday loan, but the result of simple misunderstandings, bad habits or inaction. So having recently toured around the UK doing roadshows for the sixth series of my ITV show, I’ve collated five of the most common. 1. Saving while you’ve expensive debts Savings rates are depressingly low – the top easy-access rate is 1%. Credit card and other interest rates are depressingly high. So, £1,000 credit card debt at 18% costs it costs you £180 a year, the same amount saved in top paying savings account at 1% interest only earns you £10. If you had both, pay the debt off with your savings and you’d be £170 a year better off. Many of you will be thinking, “but I want to keep my savings, what if the boiler packs up or the roof falls in?” However, that’s a sentimental strategy, not a logical one. Let’s carry on the £1,000 debt and £1,000 savings scenario to show you why. - If you don’t pay the debt off with the savings and an emergency happens that cost you £1,000 to fix, you’d use all your savings and still £1,000 of credit card debt. - If you do pay off the debt

Funerals
M
any British funeral traditions and customs that are still alive and thriving today date back to the Victorian era. It was at this time that society developed strict codes of conduct in how a person should be mourned and how their life should be celebrated.
Despite the fact that funerals are undergoing a fundamental change, with many people viewing them as a celebration of a person’s life, rather than the mourning of their death.
Funeral announcement It is customary for individuals to announce the death of their loved ones (known as an obituary notice) in a national or local newspaper. Most funerals are open to the public in the UK, unless the family has requested a private, intimate funeral with immediate friends and family only.
Black clothing It is traditional to wear black, smart clothing to a funeral. Men often choose to wear suits. Black has long been the colour associated with mourning, as it has connotations of being respectful. If you have not been told otherwise, it is advised that you choose a predominantly black coloured outfit for the funeral
you are attending.
Funeral procession The traditional funeral procession is still popular in the UK today. The procession is lead by the hearse, containing the coffin and the funeral flowers. It is usually followed by the car or limousine driving immediate family of the deceased. Traditionally the funeral director would lead the cortege on foot. This ritual was called ‘paging away.’ Although this is less commonly seen today, some individuals still choose to include the ritual as part of the funeral procession. It is believed this tradition dates back to the times when horses and carriages were the predominate method of transport. Walking in front of the hearse slowly allowed neighbours and passersby to stop and pay their respects.

Traditions role in funerals, providing beauty and comfort at a time of sadness. Many people also believe that flowers symbolise the continuation of life. Although many people choose funeral flowers based on the favourite flower of their loved ones, others choose flowers based on their connotations and meaning. The flower that is most commonly associated with funeral services is the lily. White lilies are often believed to be a symbol of the innocence that has been restored to the soul of the deceased. They also symbolise sympathy and purity.
Burial traditions The deceased can either be cremated or buried. During a burial service it is customary to throw soil onto the coffin as it is lowered into the ground.
As well as this family members often throw things like flowers and personal items onto the coffin. This ritual is carried out as a symbol of love and remembrance.
Wakes It is customary to hold a wake, this event is kind of like a small party and is designed to celebrate the life of the deceased. The wake is usually hosted at the house of the deceased’s immediate family, though it can also be hosted at a local pub or hotel. Something that often ends up happening is the telling of old stories. Family members and friends of the person that died usually share fond memories of their loved one. Although wakes are a sad occasion, they provide a chance for families to reunite and remember the good times.

Creative Floors
f you are after some advice about your plans for new flooring then they don’t come much more experienced than Geoff Holland of Creative Floors. With over 50 years of experience in the industry there’s not a lot he doesn’t know when it comes to getting the job done to the highest standards. Geoff began his career straight from school, spending many years working for national flooring companies. Then around thirteen years ago he decided to set up Creative Floors, specialising in carpets, wood, luxury vinyl and tile. In the first of his at-home showrooms he offers both laminate and engineered wood, with the most recognised brand being Quickstep. Next to that, in his dedicated carpet showroom, you will find Axminster and Brinton carpets as well as many well known and most trusted brands. When I ask Geoff what sets Creative Floors apart from others he says he is proud of the service they offer: “First of all we have in-house fitters, our longest standing is Matt Hempsell who has been part of the team for 15 years, we don’t employ contractors so we can guarantee the standard of service. We don’t just turn up as-and-when and lay flooring, we like to go the extra mile. We turn up on time, fit your flooring professionally moving furniture where necessary and make sure everything is as it should be when we’ve finished – we’ve been known to trim doors to

ensure a perfect fit!” Creative Floors are retail members of the Carpet Foundation. Geoff explains: “It was something we wanted to do to inspire confidence in our customers, there are many benefits to them of us being members.” And he’s right. Carpet Foundation members offer: ç Impartial professional advice ç Written terms of business ç Written quotations ç Deposit safeguards ç Free extended guarantees ç A free installation guarantee ç After sales procedures
“We do all sorts of work, both commercial and domestic. We cover a 50 mile radius but we won’t turn work away if it comes from further afield.” I ask about the type of jobs Creative Floors take on. “We do all sorts of work, both commercial and domestic. We cover a 50 mile radius but we won’t turn work away if it comes from further afield – we’ve recently done a job in Norwich due to recommendation. ” From the smallest room to flooring throughout your home or business it seems that there is no job too big or too small. With the sheer amount of

samples on display in the showroom I wonder how Geoff selects the right samples for home visits. It’s trickier than it looks: “Ideally I would like people to come and visit the showroom first as we have, I believe, the most extensive display in the area. We are more than happy to go on home visits but we are only able to take a small selection of what we have to offer so I really would recommend a visit to see us first. We will, of course, pay you a home visit to measure up but we like to make sure you can see all the options available to you. You never know, you may end up with something completely different to what you thought you wanted!” Another big benefit is that there is no waiting around – most work is completed within 14 days of order. “We’re happy to work to people’s timescales” says Geoff “not having to wait weeks can be a real help if you are really looking to crack on with your redecorating” So while we can talk all day about Creative Floors’ extensive showroom collection and first rate customer service the best way is to experience it for yourself.
For more information, contact Geoff Holland on 01775 761098 or 07885 834267 email info@creativefloorsspalding.co.uk or visit the showroom, which is located at 68 Wygate Road, Spalding, PE11 1NT. www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 33

Move or Improve?
A
nyone thinking of a relatively large home improvement project weighs up the pros and cons to moving or improving – is it easier, cheaper, more convenient and less disruptive to find their dream home or create it? In order to answer this question you first need to ask why and you need to be honest with yourself. Why are you considering either? What is it that you want to achieve? More space? A change? A new look and feel? Generally there are 3 types of people; pro move, pro improve and those in the middle that can’t decide between the two. Within each type the reasoning behind the end decision differs and typically those that aren’t sure either way aren’t sure because they aren’t aware of all the pro’s and con’s in order to help them make an informed decision.
The aim of this article is to highlight all the blatant and hidden considerations to help you make the best decision for you and your family – don’t be too hasty in your decision, the cons are as important as the pro’s and vice-versa, this article is about finding your happy medium. Cons to Moving: • Expensive – it may seem like a cost effective solution at first however there are an awful lot of ‘hidden’ and pricy costs, associated with moving: legal fees, stamp duty and estate agent fees to name a few. • You have to give careful consideration to your current mortgage situation – will you be able to borrow more and extend your borrowed limit? • A number of external factors impact whether ‘now’ is the right time for you to move – things to consider include the state of the general housing market and the current economic climate.
“Be careful to ensure that whatever improvement you go with the style and design suits the existing look and feel of your home.” Pros to Moving: • An ideal solution if you don’t have the space and/or facilities to improve the amount of space you have through extending or converting. • A fresh start - new area, new people, new neighbours, new shops, new schools – somewhere different and somewhere exciting • Ability to find your ‘dream house’ – difficult but through moving it is possible to find the house you always wanted Pros to Improving: • Make your house, your home – make it yours – it might not be your dream house but that doesn’t mean it can’t be. Home improvements are a great way of giving your home a brand new look and feel. • Already settled? Don’t want to up root your family? Like your neighbours? On the doorstep of your work place and preferable schools? Improve over move all day long. • Typically a cheaper alternative to moving and, within time, should add value to your property – a lucrative investment • If you have low equity in your property improving it rather than moving would be beneficial. • The list of possible improvements are endless; extensions, conversions, new kitchen, new bathroom, new layout – room conversion and room extensions and external improvements.
MOVE ? Cons of Improving: • Inconvenience and disruption. Regardless of what you are having done there will be an element of both with a typical home improvement project. Depending on what that improvement is it could be minimal and short or quite extensive and prolonged – a new bathroom vs a double storey extension for example. The secret here is if you opt to improve engage with a trusted and highly reputable building company who will ensure both is kept to a minimum. • Be careful to ensure that whatever improvement you go with the style and design suits the existing look and feel of your home – a traditional Victorian style semidetached would look a little bizarre with a modern 21st century orangery. • Large scale improvement works are generally a result of wanting to create more space but be careful to give consideration to communal areas whilst adding more living space. • There are a number of compulsory elements that are out of your control, cost money and take time. Architectural drawings, planning permission, and building regulations approval – the process usually takes a number of weeks so patience is key.
Top 10 Home Improvements Building an extension Extending your property is an ambitious and expensive move. Any significant building work will cause disruption and reduce outdoor space. On the other hand, extra square footage can be a real advantage. Make sure your plans are in line with the style of your property (especially in period homes) and that the extension will add functional living space. It’s not wise, for example, to add bedrooms when you have a living room the size of a postage stamp. Converting the loft Most home improvements will add some value, but the cleverest will reap rewards in relation to outlay. According to valuers in The Halifax Home Improvement Survey, loft conversions represent the best value for money. Loft conversions are normally used to add another bedroom, and there’s often www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 41
Home & garden
Move or Improve? IMPROVE ? space for a value-boosting en-suite. Converting the cellar can also be a costeffective way to increase square footage. It’s not advisable to dig out beneath a property though; this is structurally difficult, you’ll need to move out during the work and costs in the region of £80,000 make it near impossible to recoup your expenditure. Adding extra bedrooms Whether you extend or convert existing space, it’s tempting to add an extra bedroom. This has a satisfyingly visible effect on estate agents’ statistics. Figures released by Nationwide showed that adding a bedroom could increase value by 11%. It’s wise to consider the proportions of your home and avoid cramming in additional bedrooms unnecessarily. Think about your potential market. Families may want to give children small rooms of their own, but couples or single-occupiers often prefer one or two spacious bedrooms. Opening up space There’s no sign that the trend for openplan living is going away. Any why should it? Natural light, sociable cooking space and luxurious living areas appeal to all sorts of buyers. Just don’t get carried away. Practical family homes often need rooms to shut away white goods, household waste, children and pets. It’s also essential to get the professionals in to make sure you’re not bashing down load-bearing walls. Kitchen-diners are a popular use of space, but the sitting room was ranked the most important room in the house by respondents in the Halifax survey. The most successful open-plan rooms tend to be ‘zoned’ to define space. Fitting central heating Fitting central heating is not the most inspiring project, but it’s a must-do for anyone renovating a property without it. While other improvements have the potential to go wrong, central heating and a modern boiler are a safe bet. Figures from Nationwide suggest this can add 13% to the value of a property. Even if your property is already kitted out, investment in a new high-efficiency boiler is worth considering. 42 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk
Creating parking space For many buyers, space for a car is a must-have. Off road parking or a garage can be especially advantageous in areas where parked cars line both sides on the street. Again, you need to think about your market. If you’re selling a five-bed home, it’s likely your buyers will need to store at least one or two, if not three vehicles, but a one or two bedroom flat there is less expectation for a parking space. Putting in a new bathroom Bathrooms can quickly look shabby and dated. A new one could set you back thousands, but it’s possible to get a decent suite for £500. Don’t feel you have to stick to the tried and tested combination of toilet, bath and shower. En-suite shower rooms and wet rooms are increasingly popular. If you’re competing with newer properties then consider adding or re-arranging rooms to increase the bathroom-to-bedroom ratio. These days, even small properties tend to be built with an en-suite leading from the master bedroom in addition to a main bathroom. Making over the garden Don’t neglect outdoor space during a property spruce-up. Gardens can be a room, or several rooms, in themselves. Remember,
Re-fitting the kitchen Kitchens suffer serious wear and tear during their lifetime, and a new one can add real wow factor to a property. Again it’s important to think things through and weigh up the cost of improvement against the overall value of your home. You can easily spend tens of thousands on a top-ofthe-range kitchen, but somewhere between £10,000 and £20,000 is more usual. Everyone has a limited amount to spend, but quality really counts in a kitchen so it’s advisable to economise in other areas.
“Don’t neglect outdoor space during a property spruceup. Gardens can be a room, or several rooms, in themselves.” first impressions count, so cast a critical eye over the approach to your home. A mere £50 will cover a few pots or hanging baskets and a tin of paint for the front door. In the back garden, consider your potential buyers. Busy professionals might be tempted by low-maintenance paving, but families benefit from a patch of grass. Barbeques, outdoor furniture and subtle lighting suggest a laid-back al-fresco lifestyle. Simple but attractive planting won’t scare off amateurs and will give expert gardeners room to make their mark. Painting and decorating Even without dramatic structural changes, good presentation can have a real impact on the amount buyers are prepared to pay. Painting and decorating was ranked an equal second (alongside a new kitchen) in the Halifax valuers list of improvements likely to add value. It may be tricky, but getting your property ready for sale means depersonalising it. Clutter can distract viewers and kitchens and bathrooms should be spotlessly clean. A splash of paint can do wonders; neutral tones are the safest bet. Keep it simple, fresh and inviting.

ybrid vehicles are in vogue these days – or so it appears. Will this technology take over the conventional power plants we know one day? I don’t have the psychic wherewithal to tell you. But a lot of automakers seem to be following this trend – and now it’s Kia’s turn. The all-new Kia Niro hybrid is propelled by an orthodox 1.6-litre GDi petrol engine, paired up with a 32kW electric motor. There’s also a lithium-ion polymer battery where energy is saved. This layout is like with the one in Toyota’s Prius, and manages an official combined mpg of up to 74.3mpg, alongside CO2 emissions starting from 88g/km.
All-New Kia Niro PROS ‘N’ CONS ➠ ➠ ➠ ➠ ➠

FAST FACTS (Kia Niro ‘First Edition’ tested) Max speed: 101 mph 0-62 mph: 11.1 secs Combined mpg: 64.2 Engine layout: 1580cc 4-cylinder petrol + 32kW electric motor ➠ Max. power (PS): 141 ➠ CO2: 101 g/km ➠ ➠ ➠ ➠
Price: £26,995
The Niro is larger than its relative, the Cee’d, yet more pocket-sized than its other relation – the attractive and admired Sportage. The all-new Kia Niro is the South Korean car company’s first attempt at a hybrid crossover type of vehicle, but you wouldn’t know. Sure, there are copied elements, such as white plastic adornments inside the cabin, especially around the inner door handles. These are, undoubtedly, inspired by Toyota, but you can let Kia off because every car manufacturer ‘makes use of’ ideas. It’s a fashion thing and, by its very nature, fashion is all about making certain you’re ‘down with the kids’ on the hottest style. The new Kia Niro’s body is rectangular, but it’s not at all disagreeable. The Niro has a simple, fetching form, that has hints of Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) about it. At the front, the Sportage’s genetic material comes through – most markedly around the headlights. What’s more, the rump of the all-new Niro is easy-on-the-eye, with a conventional tailgate decorated with touches of silver trim. The all-new Kia Niro will seat four-adults comfortably, or five at a squeeze. The load area is a decent size – certainly large enough for a regular sized family’s needs. The steering wheel is pleasingly thick to grasp and the switchgear and dials are intuitive and clear to use. The only difference between the Niro and a conventionally powered car is an energy flow meter replacing the rev counter. There’s also a drivetrain pictorial showing the energy stream between the Kia Niro’s engine, battery and wheels. On start-up, the all-new Kia Niro sounds like it’s not turned on. That’s because, as with all hybrids, the engine under the bonnet doesn’t cut in instantly. Instead of any tick-
over sounds, you hear a chime, signifying that the Niro is running. It’s not long before the 105PS petrol powered unit makes its presence known, though. On the road, the Niro delivers eventempered performance, thanks to a six-cog automatic gearbox. And, while the Kia Niro is no out and out performer, the additional power the petrol engine receives from the electric motor is appreciable. The all-new Kia Niro also feels planted and deals with the straights contentedly. It’s only on more blemished B-road surfaces that the Niro’s firm suspension results in a bit of jitteriness. The Kia Niro has to have a stiff set-up, though, to cope with the extra heft of the hybrid assembly. Luckily, there’s a silver lining to every cloud and this firmness means that body lean is hardly noticeable in corners. The all-new Kia Niro hybrid comes in four levels of trim, categorised ‘1’, ‘2’, ‘3’ and ‘First Edition’. All are well-appointed with driver assistance, comfort, and connectivity features. Every Kia Niro has a lane-keep assist system, hill-start assist control, cruise control and a speed limiter. The new car also comes factory-fitted with support smartphone connectivity, music streaming and a DAB radio.
