What a month it’s been! I made a new year’s resolution to see more of the world and I am starting as I mean to go on. We visited gorgeous Amsterdam this month and have trips planned for the future months to include Iceland and Jersey, all places I have never been to before and have wanted to visit for a while. Closer to home, the weather seems to not know what it’s doing one moment to the next. As I write this, we are being battered by wind and rain, yesterday there was sleet showers and earlier today there was sun! Hopefully, Spring is not too far away now – don’t forget to put your watches and clocks forward an hour on March 31st. We are being optimistic that the weather is going to improve and those who are green fingered can get out into the garden. We also look at how to decorate your home in the right colours to ensure you have the best mood and functionality for each room. March is National Bed Month and we have an article from The Sleep Council that will make you question your sleeping habits and how important they are. Celebrate Easter with the family at Brotherhood Shopping Park’s Animal Farm Brotherhood Shopping Park in Peterborough is delighted to announce that on Saturday 30th March a host of farmyard favourites will be taking over the Shopping Park to celebrate the Easter holidays.

SHDC backing for affordable housing

A pledge to encourage more affordable housing for local residents has been made by South Holland District Council. The Council is working to bring in more funds to enable people to buy or rent homes at a lower cost. It has signed up to the East Midlands Declaration on Affordable Housing which sets out the principles under which SHDC will work with local communities and housing providers to meet local needs. One of the Council’s key priorities is to increase affordable housing provision across the district. This includes increasing the number of homes to rent and buy at low cost to meet the needs and aspirations of the local community. Councillor Christine Lawton, SHDC Portfolio Holder for Housing, said: “There is limited government funding available nationally for affordable housing. We hope by signing up to this declaration it will increase the amount of national investment that is spent locally in providing affordable housing. “This sends a message that such investment will be welcomed and such efforts to develop affordable housing across South Holland will be supported.”

South Holland Fairtrade status renewed Work to promote Fairtrade in South Holland, to ensure farmers in the developing world are paid a reasonable price for their goods, has again been rewarded and recognised. The district’s Fairtrade Zone Status has been renewed having actively promoted the campaign which also encourages consumers to buy local produce. South Holland District Council adopted a resolution in 2007 to support Fairtrade and in 2009 South Holland was successful in its bid to become a Fairtrade Zone – awarded by the Fairtrade Foundation - in recognition for the continuing work carried out to raise the profile of Fairtrade. SHDC Deputy Leader Nick Worth said: “We are delighted to continue its support for Fairtrade and we will be continuing to promote it throughout the year but especially at our coffee morning as part of Fairtrade fortnight.” Fairtrade (http://www.fairtrade.org.uk/) is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. In South Holland there is a steering group, made up of SHDC councillors and officers, businesses, schools and church representatives. The steering group’s role is to coordinate the Fairtrade campaign and they are keen to hear from anybody actively involved with Fairtrade. The group organises numerous events including coffee mornings, lobbies local businesses, gives talks, organises competitions, makes information and promotional items such a Fairtrade bags available and works with schools and generate media interest in order to get people thinking about and acting on the Fairtrade message. SHDC will again be organising a coffee morning as part of Fairtrade Fortnight which will run between Monday, February 25 to Sunday, March 10.

news Show your support for children with cancer and their families This March, Clic Sargent will be asking mums all across the UK to get together to host afternoon teas, bakes sales and tea parties; at home, at work and in the community. The Great Mums Get Together will take place from 10th – 17th March, starting on Mother’s Day, and we’re asking nurseries, pre-schools and child-minders across the UK to get involved and help raise even more funds for CLIC Sargent. Children’s Nursery expands into Pinchbeck Little Treasures Nurseries in Spalding have recently expanded into Pinchbeck. The nursery has completely taking over from an existing nursery in the neighbouring village of Pinchbeck. news Second Midsummer Fayre Planned for Holbeach Despite torrential rain last year, the first Midsummer Fayre was declared a success by organisers, The Rotary Club of Holbeach, and plans are now well underway for a second Fayre on Sunday 23 June. The Parish Council has given permission for Carters Park to be used and once again entry for the public will be free. Children’s fair rides and bouncy castles, a dog show and food court are in place and pitch bookings are coming in. The organising committee are excited at plans that are coming together for more entertainment and activities. Helen Scott said, “We are delighted to be in the process of firming up entertainment for the show ring and some really good craft activities”. Sir John Gleed School becomes an Academy It has been a year of change at Sir John Gleed School, as the two schools merged, to become co-educational and underwent a major refurbishment, joining the two building and upgrading the facilities. The final step in the transformation took place on 1 January 2013 when they became an academy with CfBT Schools Trust. This is an opportunity to build on their successes and develop even further, in collaboration with other successful academies, both locally and nationwide. Lincolnshire Police and South Holland District Council have been working closely with Churches Together in Spalding and District to see how we could introduce street pastors in the town. There are three essential elements to getting street pastors in place: funding, management and recruitment. Thanks to South Holland District Council, local churches, district councillors and other groups, start-up funding has been secured. These costs are considerable as they cover training and accreditation. Churches Together in Spalding and District has stated it is able to provide a management team. This is great news. The next stage is to seek recruits from within the church communities to undertake this worthwhile pastoral role. Following successful recruitment, the next stage is an intensive training process before volunteers can take to the streets. To be a street pastor, you need to be over 18 (no upper age limit), a church member and willing to train in such subjects as counselling skills, drug awareness, knowing your community and street safety. Inspector Jim Tyner, Community Policing Inspector at Spalding Police Station, said: “Street Pastors do not replace the emergency services; they will be there to support vulnerable people, possibly vulnerable through drink, in staying safe and getting home safely. During busy weekend evenings the introduction of street pastors will enable police officers to concentrate on crime and public disorder at a time of peak demand. This can only be a good thing. “



Ayscoughfee Hall School It has been a bright and enthusiastic start to the Spring term for the children of Ayscoughfee Hall School. The school welcomed 9 new children at the start of January, including 8 in the Kindergarten, and all have settled in really well. The Kindergarten children particularly enjoyed building a snowman in their own outdoor learning area. Meanwhile, a willing band of parent volunteers cleared the snow from the main playground so that the children could continue to get out to play at break times during the recent bad weather.

The children returned after the Christmas holidays to a totally refurbished ICT suite, with 20 new computers installed, which together with the upgraded fibre optic broadband, will further improve the learning experience for the children when using the suite. The Year 6 children went on a visit to Spalding Gentlemen’s Society where they were amazed by the extensive range of artefacts from all over the world and the collection of books, many dating back hundreds of years. The School is now a hive of activity during lunch break and after school as the much wider range of clubs have now started. There are now 23 different clubs each week with lego, recorder, fun with words and craft clubs having been added to the schedule. Behind the scenes, the school website has been relaunched with a lot more information about what is happening at the school for the benefit of parents and enquirers alike. The website can be found at www.ahs.me.uk. The school PTFA do a great job both in terms of arranging social events and raising funds to provide additional resources to benefit the children. This year, they are being extremely active raising funds to provide additional playground equipment such as outdoor staging and shade sails. The committee is busy organising the next big event which is the Spring Ball taking place at the school on March 16th.

Acorn Pre-School We have had a very busy term we have been celebrating Chinese New Year. Parents joined the children in eating Chinese’s food from the local take away. We have been using chop sticks, making a dragon and doing dragon dancing. The children have enjoyed making pancakes for snack and putting orange, lemon, sugar or jam on the top of them. Wisbech Grammar School The captain of Wisbech Grammar School’s 1st XV rugby team has won a place in a national independent schools squad. In a closely fought match at Maidenhead Rugby Football Club (on Sunday) Mathew Retchless (18) played at number eight for the northern side of the Independent Schools RFC Lambs against the southern team. The Newton forward’s team, which was coached by the master in charge of rugby at the school, Mr Alex Laybourne, went down 29-22 in a tightly balanced contest, but Matthew was selected for the national squad on the back of his performance against players who had all been nominated by top independent schools.

Mr Laybourne, who will be helping with the coaching of the national side, said: “Matthew’s achievement is outstanding, considering the strength and depth of the competition for places in the national squad. “His selection proves that despite having smaller numbers of boys to choose from than some of the other independent schools, Wisbech Grammar School is still producing outstanding rugby players.” Matthew is set to tour Ireland at Easter as a member of the 32-strong national squad after playing in some of the five fixtures planned for the weeks leading up to it.

Surfleet Primary School The children have had a great start to 2013 by becoming engrossed in our new topic for this term, Chocolate! They have been researching the Aztecs, reading Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and linking multiple aspects of the curriculum to the Chocolate topic. They will be enhancing their topic learning with a deliciously wonderful trip to Cadbury World at the end of the month, which we are all looking forward to! In contrast, we have also been heavily promoting healthy eating within our school, by running competitions for the healthiest lunchboxes and breakfast art! The children have been actively involved in making healthy choices when it comes to their food and have been discovering that they can have a wide variety of foods to compliment good health. This has been supported by a number of local businesses supplying healthy food items including the Spalding Farm Shop, Pacey’s the bakery and Morrisons. As a result of this we even featured in the local news. Key Stage 1 children celebrated the Chinese New Year (the year of the Snake) with a ‘Dragon Dance’ workshop from The Education Group and a taster of Chinese cuisine. For Key Stage 2 children, there is a hockey tournament and a residential trip to Freiston to look forward to. This residential trip will involve various exciting activities including climbing, archery and ropes courses! Despite the wintry weather, we have been enjoying a fun and varied term and are looking forward to continuing our topic work after the half term.

This term Weston St Mary CE Primary will be learning all about the Chocolate. We will be continuing with this topic up until Easter. It is being incorporated within; Literacy, Science and Art and Design. We are sure this will be a very interesting topic for the children and they should thoroughly enjoy it! We have had a busy start to term with new clubs including; recorders, art and crafts and zumba dancing with the Wii! A hockey tournament for years 5 & 6, years 1 & 2 enjoying a Chinese buffet as well as a Breakfast week was 21st January through to Friday 25th and finally, Come Celebrate Candlemas in School. Following on with the topic of Chocolate – the trip at the end of February is to Cadbury World which, we are sure, will be enjoyed by teachers and children alike!

Adult choice John Lanchester – Capital his is a truly excellent book. The story of Pepys Road in London and its residents who are ticking along just fine until the financial crisis kicks in. Some of the characters may seem a little clichéd such as the Polish builder and the Asian shop keeper but you like the entire book’s cast, most if not all of the time. The stories of each person weave around each other to tell a story of love, heartache, cash flow shortages, illness and self -indulgence: in fact everything any one of us comes across daily. Thrown in for good measure are terrorist plots, stolen cash and premiership footballers. The book tears along with humour and why it hasn’t been marketed better is beyond me. Highly recommended.

David Melling Hugless Douglas ouglas is a huggable, loveable brown bear who wakes up one morning in need of a hug and goes off in search of the perfect bear hug. Hooked already, this is a lovely book, nicely illustrated with quirky ideas and imaginative interpretation. The bear wakes up from his hibernation and sets off on the quest for a hug, as he’s been asleep all winter he tries to remember what it was that he best liked about hugs and tries a rock, a tree, a bush, an owl and other things to hug but in the end the best hug comes from… read the book to find out but it will make you go AAAAH. If you’re having problems getting to work because of the snow and freezing conditions, you should know about your rights.

Work and the snow: your rights Y

our employer might have a bad weather policy and this should say what is expected from you and what you should do if the weather and public transport means that you can’t get to work. Can my employer dock my pay if I can’t get to work? If you can’t get to work because of the snow, your employer can dock your pay. However, you should not be disciplined or dismissed if your absence was due to circumstances beyond your control. You may be able to negotiate with your employer to work at home, to make up the hours or take the time off as annual leave to avoid losing pay. If you’re having problems with deductions from your wages, you should get advice from a specialist adviser, for example at a Citizens Advice Bureau. What if my work has closed but I can make it in? If your employer closes your place of work and does not require you to attend work or work from home, in principle you should nevertheless be paid, since you are ready and willing to work. However, there may be a clause in your contract which says you do not have to be paid if the workplace is closed due to bad weather. If your employer stops your pay when there is no clause in your contract which allows them to do so,

you should discuss this with your employer, as you could bring an unauthorised deduction from wages claim to recover the pay owed. You may have a clause in your contract which says you can be laid off or put on short-time working if your workplace has to close down for certain reasons, and if this is the case, you will not be entitled to your normal pay for these times even if you are willing to work. You may be entitled to a retainer payment known as a guarantee payment, depending on what your contract says. If your contract does not include any such clauses, then your employer can only refuse to pay you when the workplace is closed if you agree to it verbally or in writing. My child’s school has closed and there’s no-one else to look after them. What about work? If your child’s school has been closed unexpectedly and you are unable to make alternative childcare arrangements, you have the right to unpaid time off from work to deal with the situation. If you have any problems with your rights at work, you should consult an experienced adviser, for example at a Citizens Advice Bureau. If you have a problem at work it is sometimes best to seek advice before confronting your employer. Listed below are some other organisations that may be able to assist:

You can search their online database of solicitors and other legal advisers at: www.lawsociety.org.uk If you can’t afford to pay for a solicitor and you can’t get legal aid you may be able to find a solicitor who will take your case on a no win no fee basis. If you win or settle your case, you will normally pay up to a third of your compensation to your solicitor. If you’re paying for a solicitor in this way, make sure you check your agreement with them carefully at the beginning, so that you’re clear about what you’re paying.

It’s not just the happy couple who receive presents on their wedding; it’s customary for the bride and groom to buy their bridesmaids, ushers, best man and parents a little something to thank them for their help and support in the run up to the big day. wedding, while a floral arrangement is a popular choice for both the mother of the bride and groom. When it comes to the best man, a keepsake such as a pair of cufflinks, tankard, watch or pen is a lovely memento, or maybe you could treat him in some other way, by paying for his suit hire perhaps? The same applies to your ushers, and don’t forget your Dads. They’ve no doubt put a lot of effort (and money!) into making sure your celebration goes off without a hitch – so make sure you acknowledge their efforts work too. And don’t forget your guests - wedding favours have been given for centuries; the first ones, known as ‘bonbonniere’, were presented as glamorous gifts to the wedding guests of French aristocrats. Originally a symbol of good luck, embodied by a little

trinket box, they were generally made of porcelain or crystal and adorned with precious stones. Inside were luxury items of the day - such as sugarcubes. Several centuries later they became affordable enough for everyone, and the tradition was adopted by couples all over Europe, when they were later substituted by sugar coated almonds. These sweet treats remain a popular favour choice today and are usually given in sets of five to represent fertility, longevity, wealth, health and happiness, while their bitter sweet taste is said to represent the bitter-sweet experience of married life! Today all sorts of gifts are given to wedding guests as a thank you for sharing a couple’s special day - usually matching the event’s theme or colour scheme - and include sweets, seeds, candles and lottery tickets. >>

Speeches

Whether you’re a gifted public speaker or not, making a wedding speech can be a nerve-wracking business. There are generally three speeches usual to a wedding reception - made by the best man, the groom and the father of the bride - but that doesn’t mean you can’t break with tradition and include one from the maid of honour / best woman or even the bride. If your sticking with the usual three, the father of the bride is traditionally called upon first to propose a toast of ‘health and happiness to the bride and groom’. Before doing so, it is his job to welcome the groom’s parents, relatives of both families and other friends and guests. As well as welcoming his new son-in-law into the family, it is also customary for him to say a few words about his beautiful daughter too. He is followed by the groom, who traditionally replies on behalf of himself and his new wife. After thanking his parents, and all those present for their gifts and best wishes, he concludes with a toast to the bridesmaids, to thank them for a job well done. Finally, it is the best man’s duty to reply on behalf of the bridesmaids. His speech should be light-hearted and fun and is often regarded as one of the high points of the reception – so no pressure there then! If you’re worried about penning a speech, fear not, as there are plenty of books and helpful websites giving tips on all aspects of writing and delivery, as well as family-friendly jokes and even example templates. Just be careful if you go down this route though, and make sure you don’t get caught out using material your guests may have heard elsewhere!

Traditions

Are you superstitious? If so, there are lots of old traditions and customs associated with getting married - the most well known probably being the verse ‘Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue and a silver sixpence in your shoe’. This rhyme originated in Victorian times; the ‘something old’ is said to represent the couple’s friends, who will hopefully remain close during the marriage. Traditionally it was a garter, given to the bride by a happily married woman, in the hope her happiness would be passed on. The custom of wearing ‘something blue’ comes from Israel, where brides wore a blue ribbon in their hair to represent fidelity and finally the placing of a sixpence in the bride’s shoe was ensure wealth during her married life. Another popular wedding tradition is the bride dancing with her father, following the first dance with her new husband. This is said to follow on from the tradition of a dad walking his daughter down the aisle to give her away, and is said to represent their special bond. The cutting of the wedding cake is another traditional part of the reception celebrations, with the couple making the first cut together - to symbolise their shared future. Cakes have been associated with weddings for centuries. The Romans shared a cake together during their ceremonies. Not a rich fruit cake, which we traditionally enjoy today, it was said to be a plain confection made fro wheat, flour and water. In Britain the first cakes were flat and round, and contained fruit and nuts, to symbolise fertility. Another old custom was for guests to throw small cakes over the bride, as we throw confetti today, again to promote fertility.

food safety

Food safety inspectors have hailed a year of progress following the introduction of a new system of hygiene ratings for outlets throughout South Holland. By Chris Hutchings, SHDC

he vast majority of eateries are classed as between ‘generally satisfactory’ and ‘very good’ in the district. The National Food Hygiene Rating Scheme was introduced by South Holland District Council in March last year and of the 890 food establishments in the district, 587 have received a one to five rating. The remaining 303 are either exempt, excluded from the scheme, of a sensitive nature or are ‘awaiting inspection’. The scheme replaced the Tulip system and has been instrumental in helping to improve standards of food storage and preparation and in informing consumers. It gives customers a clear indication of the standards of hygiene they can expect at places they are considering visiting for a meal, take-away or to buy food to prepare at home. The scheme includes retailers, residential homes, school meal services and outside caterers. The scheme started in the district last March and food outlets, such as restaurants, takeaways and pubs are, and will continue to be, inspected by SHDC food

safety officers to check hygiene standards meet legal requirements. All food hygiene rating visits are carried out unannounced and food safety officers check the following: • How hygienically the food is handled, prepared, cooked, cooled and stored; • The Condition of the structure and equipment , including cleanliness; • How the business manages and records what it does to make sure food is safe, including making sure food handlers have the necessary skills and awareness. The results of these inspections are rated on a scale ranging from zero at the bottom (which means ‘urgent improvement necessary’) to a top rating of five (‘very good’). In South Holland 91.5 per cent of outlets are currently rated in the top three classifications and so far just 0.2 per cent have been given a zero where ‘urgent

improvement is required’. All premises that are in need of improvement are currently being targeted by enforcement officers to ensure that an acceptable standard is reached. These ratings are available to view on the Food Standards Agency website at food.gov.uk/ratings . The food business is also given a sticker and certificate to display at the entrance to their premises. This means that their customers can easily see them and decide if they want to go in. Councillor Malcolm Chandler, SHDC Portfolio Holder for Food Safety, said: “The scheme has seen excellent benefits for local food businesses and the people that eat and shop in them. The public are able to use the ratings when deciding where to go and food companies recognise that displaying a good hygiene rating is good for business. “I am very pleased to see that the extent of the interest by food retailers to the point where roadside operators achieve the excellent 5 standard, demonstrating the importance this has to the industry as a whole. “When customers expect to see a rating, there is a real incentive for food businesses to seek to make improvements to their hygiene standards.” Catriona Stewart, Head of the Food Hygiene Ratings Team at the FSA said: “South Holland is among the 93 per cent of local authorities in England who are using the hygiene rating scheme in their area. “Having a single nationwide scheme is good news for people when eating out, as it means they can recognise and use the ratings in their own area as well as further from home. It also provides a level playing field for businesses across the country. If people continue to check the ratings, that will encourage food outlets in South Holland to keep their hygiene standards high.”

Quick and Easy Mushroom & Spinach Lasagne Serves 4-6 • 400-500g of fresh spinach • large punnet of mushrooms • garlic (crushed) • cheese sauce • lasagne verdi sheets • grated cheese • oil for cooking Blanch the spinach in one pan and gently fry the mushrooms and garlic in another with a little oil. Once cooked, stir the two together and add in salt and pepper to season. Make up a packet cheese sauce as directed on packet. Stir half of the cheese sauce into the spinach and mushroom mixture. Pour some mixture into a lasagne dish, then layer with lasagne sheets. Add another layer of sauce mixture then more lasagne sheets. When finished pour on left over cheese sauce mixture and top with grated cheese. Cook in the oven (180 ° C /Gas 4 for 45-50 mins) until pasta is cooked then sprinkle with cheddar cheese. Serve with a fresh salad and crusty bread.

Carrot Cake Cupcakes Serves: 12 • 8 eggs, separated • 300g caster sugar • 2 lemons, zested and juiced • 120g plain flour • 1 teaspoon salt • 4 teaspoons baking powder • 400g ground almonds • 100g chopped pecans • 2 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 600g carrots, peeled and grated • 20g butter, for greasing Cream cheese icing • 500g cream cheese • icing sugar to taste (Approx 500g - 700g) Preheat the oven to 180 ° C / Gas 4. Line a muffin tin with paper cases. Whisk together the egg yolks and sugar until the mixture is pale. Add the zest and then the lemon juice, flour, salt, baking powder, almonds, pecans, cinnamon and carrots. Beat the egg whites with an electric mixer to stiff peaks. Fold into the above mixture. Spoon the cupcake mixture into prepared cases. Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes. To make the icing, beat the cream cheese with an electric mixer or a fork. Add icing sugar until you achieve your desired taste and consistency. Once the cupcakes are fully cool, ice with the cream cheese icing. I prefer these cupcakes cold after 24 hours in the fridge, so if desired wait to ice them after chilling for a day or even just overnight.

More recently Woodland’s own fruit and meat - beef, lamb and turkey - have been added to the range, along with eggs and numerous other items such as flowers and even poems written and inspired by life on the farm. Customers can order a variety of boxes - vegetable, mixed fruit and veg, fruit and salad - as well as beef and lamb boxes, which can also be tailored to personal tastes. Spalding’s pork pioneers Renowned up and down the country for their delicious products including pork pies and sausages, George Adams and Sons has been serving the good people of Spalding since 1910. By Kate Chapman

he first butcher’s shop was opened in the town, with an initial capital of £10, just over a century ago, and today the business is still family owned, with George Adams’ great-granddaughter Mary at the helm. “Back in the beginning, the pork pies were made in a room above the current premises in The Crescent”, Mary explained.

“In 1918 they expanded and bought a shop, but it was in 1923 with the introduction of a pork pie postal service that the pies gained notoriety outside of Lincolnshire.” “In 1925 we built a slaughterhouse, which was in use until 1963, when the business had expanded to a chain of 20 butcher’s shops. “From there, the business grew into wholesale and was supplying all the major supermarkets with pork pies, sausages, scotch eggs and pasties. All the

while the butcher’s shop carried on and the company continued to make hand raised pork pies in the same timed honoured way.” In 2005 things went full circle when the production kitchen was opened and the hand-raising of the pies came back to the shop, where it all first started. “Around four years ago the main part of the company was sold putting us back to where we started in 1910, with the butcher’s shop and production kitchen for hand raised pork pies,” said Mary. “The company is very much a family one and we pride ourselves on producing the same high standard hand made pies as we always have.” Alongside a range of locally sourced fresh meat, the shop stocks a varied selection of regional specialities crafted on site and sold under the George Adams Heritage label. These include pork pies, stuffed chine and

Lincolnshire pork sausages and acelet – a cooked pork meat loaf seasoned with sage. In recent times, Adams’ pork pie business has united with a rival company founded by Dick Harlow – to create the Adams and Harlow brand. Their pies are still made entirely by hand – a process which involves shaping the hot pastry around a mould, which is then left to set, before filling with fresh Lincolnshire pork (seasoned with salt and pepper) and then baking each day. Other delicious flavours in their speciality range include the Red Devil pork pie (pork and chilli), pork and mustard, Huntsman (layered pork, chicken and stuffing), Poacher (pork with a layer of Poacher cheese, topped with roasted onions) and Game Keeper (seasonal game topped with morello cherries) to name a few. “The pies have a characteristic slumped appearance, crisp pastry and tender, well seasoned meat with a cushion of pork jelly,” Mary added. And as if that isn’t enough to get your taste buds tingling, Adams is also renowned for its yummy sausages – are a mix of coarsely chopped fresh Lincolnshire pork with a secret blend of seasonings including rubbed sage. These delicacies are hand filled into natural casings to make the most succulent sausages which can be enjoyed at any meal of the day.

Adams has also been instrumental in trying to secure Protected Geographic Indication (PGI) status from Defra, which would mean that only sausages made in the county and to a certain recipe could genuinely be called Lincolnshire sausages. “Not only would this put the product alongside delicacies such as the Melton Mowbray pork pie, Cornish pasty and Newmarket sausage, it would also ensure its reputation against inferior products and boost tourism”, Mary said. Defra rejected the bid in January, but the Lincolnshire Sausage Association has vowed to fight on and is reapplying for the status.

The UK’s checkout revolution

which started in Pinchbeck It revolutionised the way we shop, but did you know the first barcode to be scanned in the UK crossed the checkout at the former Key Market store, in Pinchbeck? By Kate Chapman

hy this supermarket in particular was chosen to trial the new technology, which had been years in development, remains unclear, but the story goes it was due to a family connection with Spalding councillor Gwen Moore, that IBM chose Key Market as the venue for testing out its new hi-tech equipment in October 1979. The historical moment was filmed by the BBC and featured on several science programs including an edition of Tomorrow’s World. Speaking afterwards, presenter Maggie Philbin said she thought the technology would never catch on as it took 40 minutes for the device to work while she was recording her sequence. The section had to be pre-recorded behind screens too, possibly because BBC Health and Safety identified the laser as a potential hazard. “As I attempted to swipe a tin of peas for the 30th time, I remember thinking supermarkets would be totally insane to even consider the idea,” Philbin said during an interview years later.

of Wrigley’s Chewing Gum - which was scanned at a Marsh’s supermarket in Troy, Ohio, on June 26, 1974. It, along with the receipt, now takes pride of place in The Smithsonian Museum, which looks after the Hope Diamond. Key Market superstores are also long gone; the site it once occupied is now owned by Morrison’s, which took over from Somerfield. It was also formerly a Gateway too. The revolutionary barcode was invented by American Norman Joseph Woodland, who sadly died last December, aged 91. His idea for the code - made up of a series of black and white lines to identify individual products - was inspired after he learned Morse Code as a boy scout. Woodland came up with the thick and thin bars while sitting on a beach running his fingers through the sand, although the original patented idea, submitted with his co-inventor Bernard Silver, favoured a circular design that would allow it to be scanned from any direction.

Thanks to Woodland’s foresight, more than five million bar codes are now scanned every day worldwide. For the inaugural scanning and filming, it’s believed store staff were asked to play the part of the customers, and because of this, most came in all dressed up, thinking they were going to appear on the television. One however, wore her everyday clothes, and as a result was chosen to play the part of the customer paying at the till. The event was slightly contrived further, because at the time none of the products on the shelves had barcodes on them when they were first made, so Key Market staff had to work furiously behind the scenes sticking them onto everything, all ready for its customers to buy. And to this day, the fate of the packet of Melrose Tea Bags - the first product to pass over the scanner - remains unknown, as does the identity of its purchaser, unlike its American counterpart - a packet 33 www.simply-spalding.co.uk SIMPLY SPALDING

A patent was issued in 1952 and the pair sold it for $15,000. Woodland joined IBM in 1951 hoping to develop the bar code further, but it was another two decades before lasers made it possible to read the code readily. The company then promoted a rectangular bar code - which led to a standard for a universal product code (UPC) technology. In the 1960s and 1970s shops only stocked a couple of thousand product lines - mainly down to the workload involved in individually pricing everything, as well as the expectation on staff to remember how much each item cost and inflation. Supermarkets could face thousands of price changes over a weekend - hence why they didn’t open on Sundays as they would be too busy re-pricing.

Once that trust has been established then you can build that relationship and your rabbit’s character into what you want it to be. food and nutRition Rabbits are vegetarians that, in the wild, have constant access to grass, herbs, hedge plants and even tree bark. It is therefore very important that you never leave your rabbit with nothing to eat. It is also important that you look at “bunny proofing” your house, as rabbits are known to eat absolutely anything, from electric cables and mail to door frames and cardboard. Because Rabbits are grazers, they eat small amounts of food throughout the day. The food needs to be low in fat, sugar and protein, but high in fibre; which is why hay is ideal. Rabbits should eat between 75 and 100g of hay a day. Always place the hay in a hay rack; this not only stops it from being soiled, but can help you to monitor how much they eat. Adult rabbits can also be fed fruit and vegetables in small quantities as well as a high quality dry food. You can also give your rabbit the odd treat here and there. However, to avoid playing havoc with their digestive system, make sure they are low in sugar and high in fibre. Because of their hard to digest diet, rabbits need to digest their food twice. Unlike sheep and cows rabbits only have one stomach. This means that they produce a soft pellet, which they eat again, before producing the final hard pellet found in the

litter tray. To eat the soft pellet, they literally fold themselves in half; which is why it is very important that you do not allow your rabbit to become overweight. sleeping aRea Rabbits like to burrow and there are3 main things that they look for from their shelter; privacy, snugness and safety. When they go into their sleeping area, they want to get away from it all, so it is important that you respect their privacy. Make sure that it is waterproof, warm and away from drafts. If you have other pets or young children in the family, make sure that they keep away from your rabbit’s sleeping area too as interference in their safe space will only alert their instinctive feelings of being hunted. bedding matteRs When it comes to bedding choices, the options are a plenty! Everyone has their own theory on what’s best and what’s not. Our advice is simple; have a base of newspaper with wood shavings on top. This is an ideal base as it soaks up any urine. In their sleeping/ burrow area, put down a good quality straw with the emphasis on the quality. And if you are going to put hay down for them to eat, make sure it is in a rack to stop them from weeing on it. There are many debates over the use of cat litter and bark, but our recommendation is to follow the simple suggestion above as it is the cleanest and healthiest option for your bunny. If you pop in store to see us, we can show you the materials we recommend using. gRooming Whilst a healthy rabbit doesn’t necessarily need grooming, there are occasions where it is recommended. The first is if your rabbit is overweight. The chances are in this case that she can’t reach her hind quarters, so she will need a little extra help. If you have more than one rabbit, you will probably find that they groom each other. However, don’t let this put you off picking them up and giving them a once over. This grooming session not only gives you a chance to check her eyes, paws and teeth, but it also builds a bond between you. If your rabbit is a new addition to the family and is not used to being touched, take your time and be gentle; give her time to build up her trust in you. a fabulously fluffy fRiend Rabbits are very popular pets. I found myself almost expertly qualified when it came to writing one of the features for this edition, all about choosing a nursery placement your little one (on page 39).

’ve been checking out our local centres over the last few weeks, in readiness for Nancy, who has just attended her very first session at pre-school. She was a little quiet when I picked her up this morning, but all in all she seemed to have a good time. With painting, singing, stories and play dough on tap, it must have been heaven for her, while I on the other hand, felt like I was missing my right arm after dropping her off. I had an inkling she’d be fine though; we’d visited several settings, including the one we finally chose, a few times beforehand and each time I had to drag her home practically kicking and screaming because she wanted to stay and play. Battling my way on the school run, with a thick blanket of ice and snow to contend with, was in hindsight a bit of a godsend, as it took the focus off the emotional element of the occasion - and the fact that my little lady is growing up fast. It usually takes a fair bit to make me cry, but I can’t deny I felt myself welling up as she headed off without so much as a backward glance. I should count myself lucky that she was happy to go, rather than clinging limpet-like to my leg. But it really doesn’t seem five minutes ago that she was a tiny, helpless baby, and somehow, almost overnight, she’s become Little Miss Independent. I can already see the same happening with Peter, who’s gone from sitting, to standing, to cruising round the furniture in a matter of weeks. The minute you have children, everyone tells you to make the most of every moment, because before you know it, they’re all grown up, and do you know what - they’re absolutely right. And speaking of growing up, there’s now the small matter of another first birthday party to organise next month....

Whether you’re going back to work, or just looking for somewhere to send your little one for a few hours to get them socialising with other children, finding the right childcare option is a big decision for all concerned. by Kate Chapman

ith both financial and emotional repercussions at stake, it’s important to take your time and make an informed decision. There are numerous options available to parents when it comes to looking after the children; if money is no object you could hire a nanny or au pair - there are plenty of companies out there who can help place the right professional with your family. Although in these tough economic times many mums and dads are turning to their own parents for to look after their offspring, while others are devising ‘time-share’ rotas with friends, to help care for each others kids. But fear not, if neither of these more cost-friendly options is available to you, there are plenty of others you can consider. The most popular choice by far is to use a registered childminder, nursery, playgroup or pre-school, who all offer a wide variety of services when it comes to caring for our little people. Parenting website Mumsnet says: “Many parents send their children to a playgroup or nursery because they think it’s good preparation for school. “At the age of two or three, your child may still seem small but they’ll be on the Early Years Foundation

Stage ladder and the government has plans for them to learn all sorts of things. “There are lots of different types of nurseries – big ones, small ones, ones owned by national corporations, small independent nurseries, councilrun nurseries, and nurseries that may be affiliated to local schools. Each will offer something different, and what meets your needs will depend on your family and your requirements.” You can find out what’s available in your area via www.directgov.uk, by looking in your local library or by asking your health visitor. And when considering one of these establishments, there are lots of things you can do to help make sure you choose the right one. Pay a visit to several different settings if you can, and take your toddler along with you to see how they react to each different environment; this also gives you the opportunity to meet the staff, see how many other children are there and check out the facilities - such as what outdoor play space is there? You’ll also be able to see what toys the centre has, what sort of activities the children can get involved in, how safe the setting is and how happy the other children there are.

Request a copy of the centre’s prospectus, and check out its Ofsted report too (you can do this online at www.ofsted.gov.uk or ask for a copy of the latest one from the manager). Talk to other parents too and find out where they send their children and why. Before enrolling your child, there are also other things to think about too, like does the establishment provide hot food, and the hours of care you require. Not all of them are open all year round, while some open early and can provide breakfast and stay open late to fit in with working parents. Ask what age they take children from; some places will take youngsters from just a few weeks old, while others will only enrol them when they are three. When your child turns three, they are entitled to 15 hours of funded early years provision each week; these vouchers can be used at most nurseries and pre-schools and, now in Lincolnshire, at some registered childminders, as long as they have been approved to join the accredited Childminding Network (visit www. licolnshire.gov.uk for more information on this). But remember, every child is different; what suits one, is not guaranteed to be right for another. As long as your child is happy, then you’re more than halfway there.

Toxic Sleep: the silent epidemic by Lisa Artis of The Sleep Council

rganised by The Sleep Council, the month aims to remind us all of why a sound sleep is good for our health. Forget the old saying that if “You snooze, you loose.” It’s thought that a good sleep has amazing properties that make you healthier and happier, and can even add years to your life! Nearly half of us are getting just six hours sleep or less a night. And an alarming four out of five people complain of disturbed or inadequate – or ‘toxic’ – sleep. The solution could be shockingly simple. According to the Furniture Industry Research Association (FIRA), a bed may have deteriorated by as much as 70% from its ‘as new’ state after 10 years. Yet, a new Sleep Council survey* for National Bed Month (March) shows people are simply not making the connection between toxic sleep and the state of their bed. It found four fifths of those questioned regularly experience interrupted sleep or always wake up tired. And a whopping 47% achieve just six hours sleep or less a night. 67% said they wake up with back or neck ache: a classic symptom of a bed that no long offers the right level of support. Yet incredibly, nearly nine out of 10 people said they were reasonably or very happy with the comfort of their bed. “People simply do not seem to make the connection between lack of sleep and the state of their bed,” said Professor Chris Idzikowski of the Sleep Assessment and Advisory Service and Edinburgh Sleep Centre. “It is surprising to find that 67% of the sample were waking up with neck or back pain and not connecting their poor sleep with their, presumably old, bed. The sheer scale of sleep deprivation is worrying. “The average person needs a good seven to eight hours sleep a night to function properly but what we 44 www.simply-spalding.co.uk SIMPLY SPALDING

are seeing here is nearly half the population suffering from quite significant sleep deprivation. An even higher proportion are reporting disturbed, interrupted or ‘toxic sleep’ – that is, sleep that leaves you still feeling tired in the morning.” Said Jessica Alexander of The Sleep Council: “As well as reporting a lack of sleep and waking up with neck or back-ache, our survey also found more than a quarter of us would be embarrassed for other people to see the state of their mattress and one in six couples experience roll-together which is caused by a dip in the bed. “What they are reporting are the classic symptoms of worn out or unsuitable beds.” Such symptoms of wear and tear are confirmed in the just-published results of a scientific ‘autopsy’ undertaken by FIRA – the UK’s leading furniture testing and research centre – for The Sleep Council. Laboratory tests on four different mattresses (one new and three between six-and-a-half and eight years old) found all had lost a degree of ‘height’ due to compression and in one, a spring frame which had penetrated the fabric could potentially have gone on to cause someone an injury. On another, the outline of the springs was not only visible on the surface but the entire top ring of the springs could easily be felt through the cover. So despite more than 50% of survey respondents saying they thought a bed should last between up to 12 years and over 20 years, the FIRA autopsy clearly demonstrated that beds as little as six years old could offer significantly less support and comfort than a new one. Other signs of deterioration shown up by the tests included compressed and rusting springs, compacted fillings, split seams, frayed edging, musty smelling fillings, indentations, severe discolouration, baggy covers and loose or missing tufts. Said Phil Reynolds, senior manager, technical services at FIRA who conducted the testing: “When we disassembled

Top tips for buying a bed • Decide your priorities and concerns in advance. For example, is it: price, storage, access to bedroom, turning the mattress, getting in and out of bed, overall size or shape, a health issue, etc • If possible, try a selection of beds for comparison before you buy. Set aside enough time to do the job properly so you can appreciate the differences. • Buy for correct support and comfort for your weight and build – not just firmness. • Wear comfortable clothing, remove any outdoor gear and lie on the bed for quite a long time – at least 10 minutes. Lie down in your normal sleeping position and make some turns, too. • Try it together, if the bed’s for two. You both need to feel comfortable. • Don’t forget a bed is a mattress and a base working together – don’t consider them in isolation. • Think big – larger beds are more comfortable. Being disturbed by a sleeping partner is one of the most common complaints. With a larger bed you are less likely to disturb one another. • Check dimensions. Bed sizes are not standardised and even if they have the same name (eg King size) they may not be the same size – especially if the mattress and base are not from the same manufacturer. • You get what you pay for – both in product and service – so spend as much as you can afford. the used mattresses, all of them showed a loss of height and although it was not possible to see any dust mites or allergen as these are not visible to the naked eye, a covering of dust, skin cells and fibre on the back of one insulator was clearly visible.” The mattresses were also tested for dust mites and, more importantly, their allergen. Just two micrograms per gram (mcg/g) of dust mite allergen can cause hypersensitivity in asthma sufferers, while ten mcg/g can pose a serious health risk. According to the Medical Entomology Centre, Cambridge, around one in five aged mattresses can contain between two and 10mcg/g of the dust mite allergen and one in 20 has above 10mcg/g. Said Jessica Alexander: “The research serves to confirm what we all know but few consumers seem to recognise: beds do deteriorate in time and that is bound to have an effect on the level of support and comfort they offer which will, in turn, affect the quality of sleep. “Four out of five people in our survey said they were not getting a good night’s sleep and it is our belief that the problem for a large proportion of them is that they are sleeping on unsuitable or worn out beds.” *Research for the Sleep Council ‘Toxic Sleep’ survey was conducted online by Pollab Ltd between January 26 – 27 2011. A total of 1,030 UK adults (aged 16+) were questioned, the sample being broadly representative of the UK population and demographically broken down by age, gender, region and marital status.

New chapter beckons for

urrently up for sale due to the owners Sue and Eben Atkinson’s impending retirement, records show there has been a hostelry on its High Street site since 1798 - albeit much smaller than the one existing today, although undoubtedly the old part of the building is original. Coming further forward in time, the Bull, which also offers accommodation and a restaurant, is the pub that inspired the popular BBC 4 drama The Archers. Villager and parish councillor Jim Latham has spent many hours researching the story of how this village landmark came to be the birthplace of the world’s longest running soap opera, which at its peak attracted 25 million listeners. “Fans will tell you the home of The Archers is Inkberrow, in Worcestershire, which over the years it has become. Although well documented, few people know that the original inspiration came from Rippingale,” he explained. “After the war, the Government became increasingly worried about modernising agriculture, increasing food production and cutting imports. “BBC radio was the most popular medium of the day, and was the obvious way forward. New programs began

to appear and one was called Farm Visit, originating from the Midlands Home Service, in Birmingham - the man behind it was 40-year-old radio producer Godfrey Baseley. “In August 1946 he came to Rippingale and Dowsby to meet local farmer Henry Burtt and to record a program about his unusual farming methods. “Burtt was an internationally recognised expert on seed crops, a leading member of the NFU and a Government advisor. If you drank Ribena in those days, the blackcurrants came from Rippingale - the village was surrounded by fields of blackcurrant bushes and mustard and cress among many others. “Burtt said he was involved in a perpetual struggle against the elements, pests and diseases and frequently against Governments. His son Stephen was also interviewed. These conversations provide clues not only about how The Archers came about, but also where some of its most memorable characters originated.” The BBC subsequently called a conference of farming organisations to discuss ideas of how to make farmers move with the times, when one of the final suggestions of the day, made by Burtt, was to create a ‘farming Dick Barton’.

If it’s a great day out for all the family you’re after, then look no further than Deeping St James’ Exotic Pet Refuge, which is throwing its doors open to the public once again at the end of the month. by Kate Chapman

ounded in 1984 by Pam Mansfield and her late husband Mel, this unique animal sanctuary is home to more than 400 creatures including owls, birds of prey, reptiles, wolves and monkeys to name a few. Now assisted by her son Darren, and a small team of regular volunteers, Pam opens the refuge to members of the public six times a year - and is doing so again on Sunday, March 31, from 10am to 5pm, at a cost of £5 for adults and £3 for children. “Someone came to us one day with an injured bird and it all snowballed from there, with more and more creatures being brought to us,” recalls Pam, who was a full-time housewife prior to setting up the centre, “By 1984 we became a charity and many years later on we needed to move to our current four-acre premises in Station Road. “This is a twenty-four hour a day, seven days a week job,” she adds, “You don’t get time for holidays, or any other time off, for instance when an animal is sick it comes into my home for special care. The refuge is my entire life.” As well as looking after the animals in its care, the refuge is always keen to ensure it ‘gives something’ back to those who help out and visit, by providing a variety of education and conservation programmes.

Working with a wide range of community groups, it provides information about its animals - both the exotic breeds and British wildlife - in respect of conservation biodiversity, through information panels, educational talks and field trips, the latter of which include various curriculum based sessions. For younger students there is a petting section, while other experiences on offer include art and photography sessions, animal handling experiences, guided tours, animal workshops plus work experience placements. The sanctuary also supports the aims of the Learning Outside the Classroom manifesto, stating that it “strongly believes every young person should experience the world beyond the classroom as an essential part of learning and personal development, whatever their age, ability or circumstances.” But as a registered charity, the refuge can only survive with the public’s help; it doesn’t get any government funding, and needs more than £50,000 a year just to stay afloat. Pam and her team are eternally grateful to all those who have helped over the years, but they are always looking for different ways to expand facilities, so they can care for even more animals.

As a result they’ve come up with several different ways people can help and support their endeavours, which range from making a simple financial donation to sponsoring an animal, holding their own fundraiser or even hosting their own party or event at the centre. Pam’s daughter has also opened a charity unit to raise funds for the refuge through the sale of second hand items, in her shop Game On, in the Deepings, which is seeking donations and support too. You can also help the refuge by donating items including food (such as dried / tinned dog or cat food, poultry or bird seed, fruits and nuts etc), building materials or other useful items, while volunteers are always needed to lend a helping hand too. Add Some Colour to Your Life When you approach home design, you are likely do so in a couple of different ways – choosing objects and colours that simply look attractive or using an existing pattern or decor theme to dictate your decisions. By Hayley Willerton

olour is a powerful tool that can be used to inspire emotions, create space illusions or simply set the mood and atmosphere for any particular room. Especially when used with interior and exterior painting, colour psychology is a great way to create a healthy and beautiful home. Create the illusion of space with bright colours: If you want your home to look larger than it really is – especially when it is about to go on the market – you can use bright and vibrant colorus like yellows and eggshells to add space to your home exterior. As a warning, avoid the common colour white. Although it can add space, it is nowhere near as effective as tinted colours. Build appetites in your kitchen with red: Red has been shown to increase appetite in most people – one of the reasons that many restaurants choose red patterns for their décor. Using red in your kitchen to increase appetite is as simple as blending beige walls with red blinds or cupboard doors. Warm up your home with deep tones during the winter: Using reds, oranges and yellows in your home can make the home seem more welcoming from the outside or warmer on the inside – especially during the winter. If you are selling a home during the winter and are planning to paint, keep this in mind. Cool off in the summer with colder colours: Along the same lines as warm colours in Autumn, cool colours, especially blue, can make your home seem fresh, cool and clean during the summer. If you really want some purple in your home, try blending it with more natural colours like subtle yellows or greens. Blend brown for a natural look. If you love the look of wood or leather or already incorporate this earthy natural look in any room of your house, adding some

brown paint can amplify the appearance. You should be warned, though, that brown can cause depression in some people. There’s a reason bathroom fixtures are usually white: White not only symbolises fertility and cleanliness, but it also makes cleaning easier in the bathroom. You don’t want stains to be hidden so they go without being cleaned. Knowing that the bathroom is clean and fresh with lovely white paint can put your mind at ease and inspire relaxation. Trust orange for a sick room or asthmatic child’s room: Orange is often associated with improved lung function as well as increased energy. As well as working well in any workout room, a mild orange can be very helpful to those recovering from illness or with lung problems. When all else fails, look to nature. Colours that appear in nature will blend perfectly in your home interior. However, with the exterior of your home, bright colours are more often than not the best choice for a more welcoming living space.

Spring preparing your garden ready for

From the longer daylight hours to the sound of morning birds, the signs of spring are all around us. Spring and winter are currently battling it out but there’s plenty to do to prepare your spring garden. Here are some ways to get your garden ready for the better weather. by Hayley Willerton Plants Inside the Home • • •

Start fertilising house plants as soon as there are more hours of daylight than darkness. Re-acclimatise plants that have been inside all winter to the outdoors. Ease them outside on warm days but don’t leave them out overnight until there’s no chance of frost. Don’t forget to clip dead leaves off to focus nutrients. Clean off leaves with a mild detergent and warm water. Don’t scrub or pull on leaves.

Outside • Clear out weeds, debris and last year’s dead leaves from garden beds and loosen soil. Top Tip - pulling weeds is easier while the ground is wet. • Add compost and natural fertiliser such as odorless horse manure when the soil is dry enough. • Help the compost decompose by turning it with a pitchfork every few weeks. • Remove dead flower heads from bulbs that have finished flowering so their energy is able to focus on new bulb development. • Lift and divide large clumps of herbaceous plants. Remove the old woody stalks and add them to the compost. • Keep an eye out for aphids that like that new spring growth. Use botanical pesticide as a last resort to insect attacks. • If trees and shrubs in your garden have broken branches or “suckers” (small young branches), cut them off as close as possible to the main branches, as they zap the strength of the tree. • Use vinegar and lemon juice to remove mold and mildew from garden tools, plastic toys and lawn furniture before putting them outside. Take advantage of your recycling days to properly dispose of old appliances, batteries, paint cans, and other non waste items. • Remove fallen leaves from gutters and around the foundation of the house to prevent mold and mildew from forming. Lexus GS 450h Luxury hybrid Auto Sitting behind the wheel of a Lexus is always a pleasure. It doesn’t really feel like you’re driving the GS 450h though – it’s so accomplished it almost drives itself. By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist

he full hybrid GS 450h Luxury model, introduced in February 2012, does what it says on the tin well. It oozes opulence on the inside and has a heady mix of petrol and electric power underneath its skin. The first clue that it’s a hybrid (apart from the ‘Hybrid’ badges discreetly stuck to each side of the car) is when you push the starter button. There’s no engine noise and no exhaust note – just a barely audible hum. You see, the Lexus operates in electric-only mode as much as possible, the petrol engine kicking in without a glitch when you get to around 30mph or when extra power is needed – e.g. climbing hills. But you don’t need to drive the 450h like an eco-warrior if you don’t want to. It’s a true beast when not tootling along at ‘green’ speeds. And so it should be with a massive 3.5 litre V6 lump under the bonnet. Developing 286bhp with 197bhp worth of electric assistance makes it disgracefully rapid. It’ll hit 0-62mph in under six seconds and the needle will rise all the way to 155mph before an electronic limiter says enough is enough. But be warned, the power output can surprise you and sometimes the back end can skip out on greasy surfaces if you’re too heavy footed. Despite the excitement the motor can stir up, the big GS appears fairly modest on the outside. Inside is a different story: the car includes a high specification that’s rich in advanced technology and features, combined with precision fit and finish and attention to detail.

It can feel a little big and ungainly on twisty country roads but, with the help of its smooth auto gearbox, it glides effortlessly along the straights. Cabin contentment is assured with leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control and electrically adjustable front seats. The steering wheel is electrically adjustable, too, and incorporates paddle shifts. On-board entertainment is provided by a 12-speaker audio system with CD player, DAB tuner, Bluetooth and USB/Aux ports for connecting personal music players. A Mark Levinson premium surround system with 12.3-inch navigation and multimedia screen is available as an option on the 450h Luxury model, and came already fitted to my test car. It’s the largest screen on the market, yet it doesn’t dominate; in fact it seems at one with the Lexus’ interior. The 450h Luxury grade has lots of other kit, but standing head and shoulders above the crowd is the blind spot detection system which is integrated into the door mirrors. This is incredibly useful, not to mention a great safety feature, especially when visibility is reduced on those dark, spray-ridden motorway commutes. If I had a wallet fat enough to contain nearly £50k, then I might well walk into a Lexus dealership and buy a GS 450h. It’s less flashy than some of the

German marques that many businessmen feel they must drive, but it looks after you just as well - maybe even better. It’s a cracking car – but I suspect it’s slightly too expensive for many – and maybe not quite cool enough for others. If this was America it’d be a different story – Lexus is seen as the crème de la crème of motoring there.

Hyundai Veloster Turbo SE 1.6 T-GDi Hyundai makes some really exciting, different looking cars these days. The Veloster is perhaps the one that turns heads the most.

n the outside the motor is squat, sporty and sits on its haunches like a wild dog about to attack. It retains the standard car’s unique 1+2 door layout but with the addition of visual enhancements designed to give the Veloster an even more athletic and purposeful look. The front bumper, radiator grille and front fog lights are new to the Turbo. The rear also benefits from a revised bumper, which includes a fresh fog lamp design plus round twin exhausts and diffuser. A longer and wider rear spoiler with integrated LED brake light is included in the visual changes along with a red “Turbo” nameplate on the bottom right of the bootlid. But is it a dog with teeth? Well, yes and no. The Veloster only has a 1591cc engine. That might seem a bit unimpressive, but bear in mind it’s a petrol turbo cable of churning out 184bhp. The heady Hyundai’s needle will spin to 133mph and it’ll reach the magical 0-62mph mark in 8.4 seconds. All the figures sound great on paper, but the car just didn’t cut the mustard for me. Don’t get me wrong; the Turbo SE 1.6 T-GDi feels quick but it’s just not as exciting as its appearance leads you to believe. Why that is I just don’t know. Maybe the car is too well sound-proofed, or perhaps it’s all psychological and I was simply expecting

it to kick like a mule. Whatever the case, it didn’t make me feel all buzzy and tingly like some hot-hatches do. Disappointing performance sensations aside, I do rate this car for a variety of reasons: it’s stuffed full of gear; it has tonnes of aesthetic appeal; it stands out from the crowd, and it’s relatively cheap. As well as all the turbo powered gadgetry under the hood, £22,000 will buy you 18 inch alloy wheels, a body kit, leather upholstery, climate control, LED running lights, keyless entry, a touch screen media centre and more driver and passenger protection aids than you care to count. In fact, the car is proven to be very safe, having been awarded the maximum five-star safety rating by independent vehicle assessment organisation, Euro NCAP. As with all new Hyundai products, the Veloster Turbo SE is backed by the manufacturer’s fully transferable 5 Year Triple Care assurance package. This includes a five year unlimited mileage warranty, five years free roadside assistance and five years vehicle health checks. So with the ‘13’ reg now out – why not get down to your nearest Hyundai dealer!
