Would a heritage centre about Boston’s Call for volunteers at Parkinson’s Boston & District branch waterways be good forUKthe town? The Boston & District branch of Parkinson’s UK is on the lookout for new volunteers to fill a variety of roles, to help improve life for people living with Parkinson’s. The Boston & District branch offers information, friendship and support to local people with Parkinson’s, their families and carers to make sure that no one has to face Parkinson’s alone. The branch is currently looking to recruit several volunteers in the roles of Chairman, Vice-Chair, Membership Secretary, Activities Coordinator, Fundraisers and General Committee Members to lead all aspects of a friendship group in Boston. The hours of the roles are flexible and is home based with attendance at branch and committee meetings on a monthly basis and occasional event. Vina Shah, Branch and Volunteer Support Officer for Parkinson’s UK in the East Midlands, explains: “Every hour someone in the UK is told they have Parkinson’s, but at the moment there’s no cure. It’s incredibly rewarding to help people who understand the day
to day struggle of living with Parkinson’s, so I’m looking forward to welcoming new volunteers who can really make a difference.” For more information on the volunteer roles, please contact Vina Shah, Branch & Volunteer Support Officer on 0844 225 3624 or email: bvso.eastmids@parkinsons.org.uk Members of the Boston branch meet on the third Thursday of the month and are treated to a variety of speakers, on Parkinson’s and a variety of other topics. New members are always welcome. Parkinson’s is a complex neurological condition which gets worse over time. Symptoms vary from person to person, so people with Parkinson’s can benefit hugely from local groups which provide expert support and advice. Parkinson’s UK brings together people with Parkinson’s, their carers and families through a network of local groups, and offers activities and events. For information and support call the Parkinson’s UK free confidential helpline on 0808 800 0303 or visit parkinsons.org.uk

Family Entertainment
Keeping the Kids Entertained over
the Easter Holidays BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
R
ecent research by Travelodge found that, on average, parents spend £300 entertaining their children over the Easter holidays. This year’s holidays run from the 4th to the 22nd April and, should the weather continue to get better as it has been doing of late, then there is plenty of scope for both indoor and outdoor activities to keep you and your family entertained. The research went on to name the Top Ten activities. Strangely enough it missed out an Easter egg hunt, a perennial favourite and something that children can really get stuck in to, whether it is helping to do some baking for snacks afterwards or making decorations to give your house a real feel of Spring, an Easter egg hunt can be a day of fun for the whole family. Weather permitting, of course! But back to the nation’s Top Ten.
Top ten holiday activities 1

Going to the cinema. A firm favourite with everyone. There are so many films at the moment which appeal to the whole family so be ready for a big discussion on which film you are going to watch! There are many films over the holidays showing in 3D so get your glasses on and your popcorn at the ready and enjoy! Visiting family and friends. This is a great way to spend the day. Whilst visiting you might like to go out for lunch – check the local familywelcoming pubs and local cafes and restaurants to see what is on offer and to take advantage of any holiday deals they may be running. Restaurants are increasingly running “kids eat free” promotions which can make a meal out an affordable choice. Baking at home. If you don’t mind the mess (and the subsequent disappearance of the children when the time comes to clean up) then baking is a great way to spend time at home. Teaching children to follow recipes or to be creative with their own ingredients can be almost as much fun as the tasting session at the end. Almost… Having picnics. We are lucky to have many places of beauty in the area so if the weather is beautiful, pack up a picnic and away you go.
5
A trip to the beach. Be it by car, coach or train beaches are within easy reach. If the weather is fantastic then swimming costumes it is, if not then wrap up and pack a wind-breaker and your kite!
6
A trip to the countryside. Being in Lincolnshire means that we are never far away from open green space. You never know what you might discover in the little villages surrounding the towns.
7
8 9 10
Visiting local museums and points of interest. A quick search on line will throw up more than you think. There are museums covering local history, animals, old farms and art. There are also several working windmills in the area which are worth a visit. Doing crafts at home. Another way to while away the time. From pompom chicks to great works of art most children relish the opportunity to get painting and sticking! Visiting a local farm. Take your pick! There are working farms in the area as well as those dedicated to smaller animals and play areas. Don’t forget to find out when the lambs are being born. Bowling. Every family member. Tournament. Loser buys dinner. A great way to round off the holidays.
As you can see, keeping the family entertained over the holidays doesn’t have to be expensive and doing a little research beforehand can lead you to the best deals and brand new experiences. The Easter holidays are often a little hint that summer is on its way so where you can get outside and enjoy!

Get Fit For the
Summer BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
fter a long and wet winter, spring is finally here and the countdown to barbecues, days at the beach and summer holidays abroad has begun. Now that the evenings are starting to get lighter and the temperature is getting warmer, the outdoors is available again for your health and fitness regime. If you are feeling like you could lose a few pounds and increase those fitness levels then there are some positive steps that you can take now to ensure you head into summer at your most fabulous! A good place to start is to look at what you are eating. It is very easy in winter to eat lots of comforting carbohydrate heavy food to get us through the cold weather! But spring is a great time to break that habit and start eating seasonal vegetables. As well as asparagus, cauliflower and new potatoes there are also great salad vegetables arriving – cucumber, lettuce, radish and spring onion. Eating seasonally is not only better for the environment but it also gives you the best selection of fresh produce. Leaner meats such as spring chicken are available and you can find delicious recipes using seasonal food all over the internet. And eating seasonally is usually cheaper as well. Next have a think about your exercise regime (for those of us that have one). If we are honest we could all do with exercising a little more. The recommended amount of time an adult should exercise is between 20 minutes and an hour, three to five times a week. This is often easier said than done for a lot of people with jobs and family commitments. Spring brings the opportunity to get outside for exercise and bring some variety for those whose exercise during the winter is done exclusively at the gym. You can exploit the extra light in two ways – by getting up a little earlier in the morning to exercise or by taking
advantage of the lighter evenings. You can even do something as a whole family, head out for an evening walk or get on your bikes and enjoy the warmer weather. If it is relatively close, you could walk or cycle to work rather than drive and you’ll be getting fitter without even trying! Invest in a pedometer and you will see your progress for yourself, it is gratifying to see how many steps you have taken in a day. Remember to take things steadily and make gradual changes. If you radically change your diet and fitness routine all at once then you are far less likely to keep it up. You will find it only too easy to slip back into those winter hibernation habits! Instead, if you take it one step at a time and aim to make small lifestyle changes over a number of weeks you’ll surprise yourself with how much progress you’ve made and not even noticed! Make sure your goals are realistic – if you currently do no exercise then don’t be signing up for any marathons this year! Marathons aside, you can set yourself a fitness goal which includes fundraising at the same time. There are many charity events which run through the summer which involve a group of friends getting together and walking, running or cycling in return for sponsorship. If you begin to exercise regularly now then a 5 or 10km run at the end of summer is definitely within your reach and not only will it give you the motivation to stick with it but you also get to do something great and raise money for some worthwhile causes. As always, if you are planning on doing something strenuous like a 5km run then check with your doctor before beginning any sort of training. If you are interested in helping a charity through a walk, run or cycle then get in touch with your favourite charity and they will let you know what events they have on and where they are taking place.
Remember to take things steadily and make gradual changes. If you radically change your diet and fitness routine all at once then you are far less likely to keep it up.

Business Focus
Kev Gosling –
Painter and Decorator BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
D
escribing himself as ‘the full monty’, professional painter and decorator Kev Gosling can turn his hand to pretty much anything. Having been in the business for over 30 years he has seen many trends come and go – and some come back again! His day-to-day work involves painting (both indoor and outdoor), lining walls and wallpapering – the traditional aspects of decorating, but lately he has found that much of his work comes from restoration rather than replacement and a boom in ‘shabby chic’. We spoke to him about the newest direction in decorating. Shabby chic is a type of interior design where furniture is chosen for signs of wear and tear or where new items are distressed to achieve the appearance of an antique. Shabby chic items are often painted with many layers showing through obviously timeworn areas. The style is imitated by painting then rubbing and sanding away the top coat to show the wood or base coats, to finish off the look of the furniture. It is this style that people are increasingly turning to. Kev is mindful about people’s approach to decorating their houses: “Over the last few years people up and down the country have been feeling the pinch. It’s given rise to shabby chic, and that’s a great way to give your rooms a brand new look without having to invest heavily in new furniture.” And he doesn’t stop there, Kev is being asked more and more to bring a new look to tired kitchens by rejuvenating them using the latest paint colours. “The benefits here are twofold. Firstly you avoid the hassle of having to rip your kitchen out – being without a kitchen can be a
nightmare. Secondly you can get a brand new contemporary look for hundreds of pounds rather than the ten thousand plus you’ll spend on a brand new kitchen.” The pictures below are a good representation of what he means – before, during and after shots of the same kitchen. It’s amazing how the same units can look so different. But before you rush out to your local DIY store to buy a few cans of paint, Kev is quick to remind us about the benefits of using a professional. “Modern paints and primers give a fantastic finish but for the best results you should use someone who knows what they are doing and has professional products.” While he’s happy to use the ever popular heritage colours by companies such as Farrow & Ball, as with many things he argues that good preparation is key. “You need to start with a professional bonding primer otherwise you’re not going to get very far. Modern paints give a high class finish but without your primer it’s useless.” Once your kitchen has been transformed Kev is also able to give the same treatment to your furniture. He’s changed the appearance of everything from dining tables to coffee tables and even a four poster bed! “It uses the same principle as the kitchens but the difference it can make is striking.” Kev prides himself on his work – with over 30 years’ experience his customers know that they will be receiving a personal service with a professional finish. He believes that there’s no such thing as a job that’s too big or too small and is more than happy to come out and give you a quote for any painting or decorating need. To discuss a decorating project or for any more information please call Kev on 07770 881259 or 01205 481259.

M
y little monkeys are all about games at the moment - but not so much the cupboard stuffed full of board ones, oh no, it’s Hide & Seek all the way in the Chapman household. There’s not a day goes by without Nancy insisting we’ve got to play. I’m not entirely sure where her new obsession has come from, but it’s all she wants to do - morning, noon and night. Don’t get me wrong - I’m thrilled she’s more interested in traditional rather than electronic toys and the television - it’s just we’re running out of hiding places! Plus she doesn’t seem to have got a grip on all the rules yet, especially the one about being quiet until you’re found. You can guarantee as soon as she’s picked her hiding place, she’ll be giggling or talking away to herself - immediately giving herself away! And on the very rare occasion we don’t manage to find Little Miss Chatterbox straightaway, Peter is usually on hand to bounce up and
down excitedly, pointing out where she is. Once we’ve exhausted every hiding place from behind the doors, under the kitchen table, and the back of the sofa, we then have to go through them all again - usually with Nancy announcing where she’s going to hide next. And it doesn’t stop there - she’s cleverly come up with another game too, to help pass the time when we’re in the confines of the car. I-Spy has cunningly been converted to take into account the fact she can’t yet spell - so instead of guessing objects based on the letter they begin with, we spot them based on their colour. It’s a bit boring I must admit, driving round the fenland countryside where everything is either green, blue or brown, but nevertheless Nancy always seems to enjoy herself - and that’s the main thing. Now it must be my turn to hide again. The pantry’s my favourite spot - at least I can raid the biscuit tin while I wait for them to find me!

Garden Project
Spring into action in the garden BY KATE CHAPMAN
With spring finally on its way, there’s no doubting it’s an exciting time to be back in the garden, with plenty of jobs to get on with.
A
You can help dry up and warm the soil during March and April, by covering an area with pegged down black binliners.
lthough we can still expect the inevitable April showers, this month can provide some sunny, although slightly chilly days – meaning it’s the ideal time to tackle some general garden maintenance. Start by applying a general-purpose fertiliser to your borders and beds, taking care not to damage any emerging shoots, or burn them with the fertiliser. Remove tired winter bedding and plants that did not survive the season, as well as faded daffodil and tulip flowers. Deadhead your pansies, primulas and other spring bedding plants too. Hoe borders to stop any annual and perennial weeds from spreading and seeding themselves and top up pots and tubs with fresh compost. Early spring is also the ideal time to sow hardy annuals in pots or modules to provide a bit of colour. In mild areas with light soil you can sow directly outdoors while half-hardy summer bedding plants like marigolds and petunias should be sown in trays. Label them and plant them under cover, or in a heated propagator, only putting them outside when the weather is warm enough. Be vigilant and watch out for pests and disease. Check roots to make sure there is no damage if any of your plants have started to wilt. You can apply chemical or biological control if there are any larvae
present, but young containerised plants are unlikely to recover if there is bad damage. Mow your lawn only when necessary – in essence whenever it is growing – adding the clippings to the compost heap in thin layers. Sow new lawns, or over-seed dead patches from mid-April until early May, but if the soil is very wet or cold delay sowing until the weather improves. Don’t neglect your vegetable patch either. Thanks to the wet weather, it’s unlikely you’ve been able to plant out onionsets, shallots, horseradish and garlic cloves yet. Don’t panic – experts advise they are potted individually in 2 to 3 inch pots with moist multi-purpose compost, with the tip of the tuber or bulb just proud. Put them outside, or ideally in an unheated greenhouse, if you have one. Once the soil has dried up sufficiently they can be carefully moved and transplanted. You can help dry up and warm the soil during March and April, by covering an area with pegged down black binliners. Now is also the time to plant chitted potatoes outside or in potato grow bags, harvest asparagus spears and prepare vegetable seed beds by removing all the weeds and forking in plenty of compost. Crops including parsnips, cabbages and radishes can also be sown direct into the ground.

Lounging around
 BY KATE CHAPMAN
Making over your lounge needn’t be a costly enterprise – there are plenty of ways to change the look of your living area without breaking the bank.
M
aking over your lounge needn’t be a costly enterprise – there are plenty of ways to change the look of your living area without breaking the bank. From updating key pieces, to planning before you buy, you can achieve a fresh new look in your home which will last for many years to come. Interior designer and owner of Austin John Interiors, Spalding, Nikki Austin says planning ahead is the key to avoiding costly mistakes. “We always draw a scale plan of the rooms we are furnishing, and make scale models of the proposed furniture to arrange within the room,” she advises “But if you can’t do this, grab some sheets of brown paper and cut it to the size of your furniture and arrange it in the room, on the floor before you buy and don’t forget to measure the door opening to make sure you can get it in the house!” Think carefully when choosing a sofa – as this is an item you will have for many years. as you will have it for many years. “A good sofa a sound investment. If you like to curl up on yours, make sure you choose one which is at least 40 inches deep,” Nikki says. “Fillings of feather allow you to sink into your sofa, great for a truly sumptuous, relaxing seat, but if you’re not up for a hefty workout plumping them, ask your retailer if they can offer an alternative, like feather wrapped around a foam.”
When it comes to colour schemes there is no right or wrong – only badly composed. Nikki says monochromatic - using the same colour throughout the room in different levels of dark and light shades - is a key trend and always a successful option. “Working with the same pallet of colours makes the room feel bigger, but be careful, they can look bland and uninteresting, “she says. “Think of the current trend of neutrals, which work great in modern homes and can look equally stunning in older properties too. “A room decorated in only one colour, with no other accents will work well if you layer your tones of the colour, try deep shades mixed with mid and light tones. The most important element to think about in a monochromatic scheme will be texture - using very hard, shiny surfaces mixed with deep fluffy throws, a soft carpet and some textured cushions will give your room a designer look.” Alternatively think about adding splashes of colour like orange, yellow or lime accessories in a grey room, which will not only lift the look but also give a new colour scheme at minimal cost. Think carefully about lighting too as this can dramatically alter a room. “A bright pendant in the centre of the room offers good ambient light, while you may want to soften the tone by using table lamps,” Nikki adds. “You could also, consider asking your electrician to install a dimmer to give you great flexibility to alter the mood.”

Simply Motoring
Audi RS 7 Sportback
 BY TIM BARNES-CLAY
Well, the car is simply a God on four wheels. It looks amazing; it delivers more thrills than the fastest rollercoaster you’ve ever been on; it sits four adults in total comfort and it’s made exquisitely.
O
ne of the benefits of being a motoring journalist is that most press cars come with a tank of fuel. This is necessary for the job you understand. The thought of actually filling up a test vehicle and paying for it with your own wallet sends most hacks recoiling in horror. But very occasionally a car captivates you so much that you really don’t mind throwing fistfuls of cash at it when the free juice runs out. The Audi RS 7 Sportback is one such motor. Why did it seduce me? Well, the car is simply a God on four wheels. It looks amazing; it delivers more thrills than the fastest rollercoaster you’ve ever been on; it sits four adults in total comfort and it’s made exquisitely. So let’s drill down a bit further into the very essence of this stunning car and look at the root of its monstrous muscle. With the help of its two turbochargers, the 4.0-litre TFSI petrol engine delivers its formidable peak power of 553bhp between 5,700 and 6,700 rpm, and top torque of 516lb/ft between 1,750 and 5,500 rpm. The turbochargers boost pressure, helping to generate incredible accelerative force. This gives the German goliath a phenomenal 0-62mph acceleration time of just 3.9 seconds and a governed 155mph top speed. If you have Autobahn aspirations, then you can increase the maximum speed to 174mph by specifying the optional Dynamic package, and enhance it even further with
the Dynamic plus package, which calls a halt to acceleration at 189mph. Despite performance of this magnitude, the RS 7 Sportback nevertheless manages to keep a firm grip on reality where economy is concerned. Thanks partly to an engine startstop system it can cover up to 28.8mpg on an average run. In the RS 7, the Quattro permanent allwheel drive system enables you to tackle long journeys in all weather without fear of losing control. The car is also pinned securely to the road by an electrically extending rear spoiler providing additional downforce. And when it comes to scrubbing off speed there’ll never be a problem, because behind the huge 20-inch seven twin-spoke alloy wheels are four massive brakes which provide reassuring stopping power. The interior of the RS 7 Sportback conveys the sporting theme with subtlety, but leaves you in no doubt you’re travelling in a very special Audi flagship. RS logos appear in the dials with their white faces and red needles, on the flat-bottomed threespoke multifunction steering wheel, in the illuminated entry sills, in the rev counter and in the displays. RS logos are also punched into the front RS super sports seats with their pronounced bolsters, integrated head rests and honeycomb-quilted Valcona leather upholstery. The two-seat rear bench, which is standard for UK models, also has well-defined contours for optimum grip.
And, as befits the ultimate incarnation of the A7 Sportback, the RS 7 features a list of standard equipment, and it is possible to upgrade the inventory even further with a portfolio of driver assistance, driver entertainment and driver information systems, including adaptive cruise control, night vision, a Bang & Olufsen Advanced Sound System with 15 speakers and 1,200 watts of total power. Awesome? I think so.

Learning to Drive
Getting on the road for the first time BY TIM BARNES-CLAY
Okay, so you want to learn to drive? Simple enough but you’ll need to get some vital paperwork sorted first. To get your motoring ‘career’ on the move you need a provisional licence. You can apply for this up to three months before you turn 17, and it allows you to sit your theory exam on the actual day of your 17th birthday if you’re eager! Theory test
The theory test consists of two parts: a multiple choice questionnaire and a hazard perception test. With the theory examination completed, you can take to the road with a driving instructor or a fully qualified driver who is over 21-years of age and held a full driving licence for at least three years. The vehicle you learn in must also clearly show ‘L’ plates at the front and rear, and it must be properly MoT’d, taxed and insured.
Insurance
One of the main concerns of new drivers is finding the cheapest car insurance possible. Low-cost insurance policies often come with large excesses, which means you have to shell out for the initial sum of any claim or repair. In the case of many new drivers’ cars, the excess can be more than the value of the car, which makes such policies very little use to the driver. Going for the cheapest insurance can also prove to be a false economy when you look at what is and isn’t included. Basic Third Party insurance may cost a smaller amount but you have very limited cover. Far better to pay more for Comprehensive cover that includes you, your car and possessions as well as other drivers, cars and third parties in the event of a bump.
First car
Whether you pronounce it ‘K-A’ or ‘KA’, Ford’s diminutive KA has been the king of the little supermini for many years now. If you’re on a shoestring but you want something that’ll get you around with little bother, the KA is the ideal companion. Low tax, insurance and fuel costs combined with the car’s petite dimensions and straightforward design provide you with the motoring equivalent of a low-cost supermarket. A great alternative is the Fiesta. Thanks to
30
Ford’s devotion to the Fiesta name, there are now thousands of the hatchbacks to choose from. Whether you want a new one or an old used model, the Fiesta is the go-to motor for any first time driver looking for something with a tiny bit of style but with dependability, too. Minimal running costs and respectable space inside means that any teenager will be satisfied taking their friends to the pictures or just sitting happily on the local supermarket car park.
