Welcome to the February issue

your LOCAL COMMUNITY

This year I didn’t make any resolutions as such but I have taken January as an opportunity to sort out my diet and start getting back into some sort of fitness regime. Before we got married I joined a slimming group and managed to lose almost 2 stone alongside getting more active. Two children later and I need to focus again on diet and fitness. So, we have cut down on red meat, alcohol as well as high sugar and fatty snacks. So far, so good but I will be ramping up the fitness over the coming weeks – wish me luck, I am not a natural gym bunny! January for us has been about having some quiet weekends after the busy weeks in the lead up to Christmas. That’s not to say we haven’t had lots of fun – painting, playing with toys from Christmas and lots of den building! Back to the issue and as it is February which is traditionally the month of love, we have given you inspiration for the most romantic destinations if you fancy whisking a loved one away for a surprise break. In our Home and Property Section we are looking at how to remodel a kitchen on a budget, and Tim is test driving an Aston Martin, we can all have a dream! Annette is talking about the question on every new mums list ‘when will I feel normal again’, so if you’ve had a baby recently or know someone who has, this is a must read for help and advice. This year is already flying by, we are looking to February and Spring is around the corner (hooray for longer days) but with little ones at home I wish time would slow down sometimes! All that’s left for me to say is enjoy the issue and see you next month!

News Skegness Foreshore Masterplan adopted and £300k allocated for initial investment for Tower Esplanade as the gateway to the Foreshore EAST Lindsey District Council’s Executive Board have agreed the adoption of the Skegness Foreshore Masterplan and Design Code. At the same meeting the Executive Board agreed an initial investment of £300,000 to improve Tower Esplanade, as the main access gateway to the foreshore. In February 2018 the District Council announced that it was working with organisations in Skegness to produce a detailed Masterplan for the Foreshore that would enable the Council and partners to proactively pursue grant funding opportunities to make improvements to the resort, building on the Foreshore’s designation as a ‘Registered Park and Garden’. The Masterplan identifies a number of potential projects and uses for underused areas of the Foreshore, including the bowling greens on South Parade as an outdoor flexible event space; the disused Beach Huts near the Pier as pop-up

restaurants and the former Festival Pavilion site as a location for a landmark structure. The Design Code aims to ensure the Council, businesses and partners, have a set standard to work towards for the Foreshore to create a more consistent and appealing appearance to the street scene. The initial phase of works to Tower Esplanade will include new LED lighting columns, granite seating, granite planters and the removal of redundant existing structures, to create a cleaner, more vibrant setting. A concealed waste compound will also be installed behind the seawall on North Bracing to help manage litter in the resort during the busy summer season. As a separate project, the Council is also working with the Lincolnshire Coastal BID on replacement directional signage in the town, with the aim of enhancing the visitor experience.

As part of its general maintenance programme, the Council will repaint all railings, shelters and street furniture in the historic areas of the Foreshore dark green and cream, to reflect the colours previously used in the resort. Portfolio Holder for Coastal Economy at East Lindsey District Council, Councillor Steve Kirk, said: “I’d like to formally thank all those organisations that have had an input to shape these important documents. The Council will now begin work on delivering on the vision and ideas set out in the Plan. Initially, this will be looking to make improvements to Tower Esplanade. Skegness continues to be one of the country’s leading seaside resorts and working with local organisations, we want to ensure it retains that high status.” The Foreshore Masterplan and Design Code are available to view online at: https://www.elindsey.gov.uk/SkegnessForeshore

Flytipping campaigner Mark Douglass is a man on a mission – he wants to change habits and behaviour in a bid to clean up Boston. He launched his own Facebook page to encourage residents to report fly tipping and is gathering a team of supporters to keep an eye out for anyone dumping rubbish. He is working with the council’s fly tipping and littering enforcement team, passing on information posted on his “Flytipping Watch Boston & Local” Facebook site. He said: “We need the eyes and ears of the community to start positive change. Together we can build a community movement to make life uncomfortable for those who want to litter and fly tip. Those who want to dump rubbish illegally need to be looking over their shoulders and acting in fear of getting caught.” Cllr David Brown, Boston Borough Council’s portfolio holder for waste services, said: “This is exactly the kind of community-spirited action I applaud. It’s commendable that Mr Douglass is rallying others to keep a watch for those who despoil. But it does come with a warning. Mark has already advised that people should not sort through fly-tipped rubbish to look for evidence leading to those responsible. He has correctly warned that there may be a health risk and it may compromise a successful prosecution. Finding evidence to penalise those who dump rubbish should be left to the

council. Our enforcement officers know the rules to follow in order that fly tippers can be legally and lawfully dealt with.” Cllr Brown emphasised that anyone seeing a fly tip, or seeing anyone in the process of dumping rubbish, should report it with as much information as possible – a clear picture of the rubbish, a wider picture showing the site and precise details of the location. If the fly tipper is seen do not confront them as you may put yourself at risk, but do get a picture if you can and provide a description of those responsible and details of any vehicle being used. This is essential for a successful prosecution. The council’s Fly Swat team will quickly respond to any reports of fly tipping in the borough. Littering and fly tipping can be reported directly to the council. The council will take action against those who litter. To report a littering offence that you have witnessed go to https://bit.ly/2QbtJZD Print the form, fill it out and post it to the council. If you are reporting a fly tip - you can fill out an online form at https://bit.ly/2QBrbn7 or send details by email to: flytip@boston.gov.uk Please include full location details and photos if available. If you are reporting litter which requires cleaning up - please fill out the online form at https://bit. ly/2FYY3lO or email details to waste@boston.gov.uk Cllr Brown said: “It amazes me that some would risk a very substantial fine rather than pay £21 to

have their bulky waste items collected and disposed of properly. “Amazingly some people will struggle heavy loads into their car and then drive out into the countryside to dump them in a dyke, in bushes or leave them in a layby. They could have just driven them to the tip in Bittern Way and disposed of them for free and without the risk of a big fine. “For those who don’t want to, or cannot lift their waste into their car, or do not have transport, the council will collect for a small charge; £21 or a £400 fine? It’s got to be worth it.” Cllr Brown also sounded a warning for the unwary. “Your rubbish means YOUR rubbish – it’s your responsibility and that doesn’t change when you hire someone to take it away for you. If they dispose of it illegally it remains your responsibility. We have had cases where someone has hired a man with a van to take their rubbish away, the van man has fly tipped it and we have traced him and fined him. If we find evidence leading us back to the householder they can be prosecuted. “You can safeguard against this by ensuring the person you are paying has a waste carrier’s licence. This is your assurance, and protection, that you are doing the right thing.” You can check in advance if the person you are thinking of hiring has a waste carriers’ licence at https://bit.ly/1YlHCOD or ask to see their waste carriers’ licence before agreeing to hire them.

Do Something New in 2019 The new year is traditionally the time when many people make a resolution to try something new either by taking up a new hobby or just getting out and meeting new people. To make the most of this tide of enthusiasm and let people know how many different groups are active within Boston and the surrounding district, a Do Something New event is being held by Heritage Lincolnshire, supported by Lincolnshire Community and Voluntary Service, aimed at promoting what’s on offer to people right on their doorstep.

The event, at St Botolph’s Church, Church Street, Boston, from 10am to 3pm on Wednesday, January 30, will give the public the chance to find out more about groups focused on their hobbies or interests, as well as various volunteering opportunities which enable them to give something back to the community. Admission to the public is free. Heritage Lincolnshire is now inviting groups which would like to have a stand at the event to promote their work to get in touch. Spaces are limited to 12 (tables of up to 6ft only),

and the cost per table is £15. Groups taking part are asked to provide their own table if possible. Stallholders will be able to set up from 9.00am, and there will be volunteers on hand at the beginning and end of the day to offer assistance. All money raised will go towards the work of Heritage Lincolnshire, a charity working to conserve the rich history of the county for the benefit of people who live and work in the area. For more information, or to request a booking form, email jackielane@lincolnshirecsv.org.uk or jackie.goodall@heritagelincolnshire.org

Town centre survey A survey especially designed for Boston is giving residents the chance to help police and Boston Borough Council consider improvements for the future. Level 2 Uniformed Public Service students from Boston College assisted the project, talking to town centre visitors on a busy market day and getting them to fill out the survey. It comes at the same time as Lincolnshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner’s annual county-wide survey about crime and related issues. But Sgt Matt Dickinson, of Boston Police, said the survey the students helped with was compiled specifically with Boston in mind and is twopronged, dealing with crime, but also ways in which making the town centre more inviting could help drive anti-social behaviour out.

Ashleigh, Joseph, left, and Amreen speak to Paul Tracey. In support is PCSO Rachel Braim.

He explained that the responses to the survey will inform actions by the police and the council to deal with specific issues of crime in Boston and ways in which to make the town centre more inviting and appealing. They will also direct bids to the Government for additional funding. Actions will be revisited after six months to assess any improvements.

It has been gratifying to see that the council is not alone in its battle with litter, rubbish and waste. I have been encouraged by the responses we continue to receive from members of the public when they spot a fly tip. They are as outraged by the lack of thought by some as I am. The council’s efforts to deal with waste, in all its many forms, are multi-faceted. And the growing help from the public ensures we are catching more who will not abide by the normal rules of a civilised society. For the sake of putting the correct items in the green and blue bins – already paid for as part of your council tax, taking items to the tip for free, taking advantage of the council’s garden waste collection service or paying a small charge for collection of bulky waste, some have had to pay a £400 fixed penalty – more if it goes to court. Our 3GS partners have been very effective at catching those who flout the anti-littering laws and some have found it has cost them £75. Some who thought they could ignore the £75 fixed penalty have ended up paying as much as £500 when their non-payment offence has ended up in court. It gives us no pleasure to have to clean up a fly tip, rummage through for evidence or face it out

Councillor’s

with someone who has littered, thrown a cigarette end down, spat in the street or not cleaned up after their dog. Some people get very angry when they have been found out. But there are no excuses. They know what they have done is wrong and have to face the consequences. We’d much rather not have to issue fines and take people to court. But we have done and will do when that is the only sanction left available. All our efforts to deal with litter, rubbish and fly tipping have resulted in us being shortlisted for a national award. Boston is easily the smallest local authority and will find out in March whether we have beaten the likes of Kent County Council, North Yorkshire County Council and City of York and Tower Hamlets London Borough Council. We are proud of our record of mostly cleaning up a reported fly tip within two working days. We have been working with Lincolnshire County Council, which runs the tip at Bittern Way, to ensure that residents are informed if, due to unforeseen circumstances, it has to close. This happened once when it could not handle the volume being brought after a busy gardening weekend. We, and all other district authorities in

the county, are also working together with Lincolnshire County Council to come up with a joint waste strategy. This would ensure that we all operate in the same way, collected the same items for recycling. This will also cut costs by sharing IT and resources. Another of my portfolio responsibilities is environmental health, and ensuring the food you buy and eat is safe is an important aspect of the work of this department. We publish monthly a list of premises on the council website (www.boston.gov.uk) which have achieved the top five rating for food hygiene, and these prove very popular. They give these businesses’ customers confidence that the highest possible food hygiene standards are being observed. It is good business sense for them to display their credentials for the public to see and I would urge more to seek to attain the highest level and then market their business using the window sticker then provided.

The council will take action against those who litter. To report a littering offence that you have witnessed go to https://bit.ly/2QbtJZD Print the form, fill it out and post it to the council. If you are reporting a fly tip – you can fill out an online form at https://bit. ly/2QBrbn7 or send details by email to: flytip@boston.gov.uk Please include full location details and photos if available. If you are reporting litter which requires cleaning up – please fill out the online form at https://bit. ly/2FYY3lO or email details to waste@boston.gov.uk

The council will pick up these three items from your home for £21 - why risk getting caught fly tipping and fined heavily? To book a bulky waste collection call 01205 314200. More information about bulky waste collections is available at https://bit.ly/28H7Ku9

Advice

Citizens Advice

More couples separate in January than any other, with bank balances low and tensions often running high it is a tricky time for couples. If you are considering separating, our trained advisers are able to talk through the implications with you. What to do if you decide to separate You don’t have to go to court to decide what to do when you separate unless you really can’t agree with each other. You will need to consider things like: • where you’re going to live •how to divide up any money or belongings you share •whether you’ll be able to afford to pay the bills once you’re living separately •If you’re in the UK as a dependant on your partner’s visa, you’ll also need to check if you can stay •where your children will live and how often they’ll see the parent they don’t live with If you’re struggling to decide, you should see if you can reach an agreement with the help of a mediator. This is something you’ll have to do anyway if you later decide to go to court. If you’ve got children Issues around separation and children can be complicated , there is further information on our website around issues including the following: • Circumstances you may need to go to court • Making child arrangements

• What to do if you think your expartner is taking your children away • Child maintenance It’s best to keep arrangements about children informal if you can. This is because courts normally won’t decide who a child lives or spends time with if they think the parents can sort things out between themselves. Deciding what to do with your home There are very few circumstances where your partner can make you leave your home. They can’t change the locks or force you to leave, so try to take time to figure out what you both want and need. Normally, you’ll need to decide whether: • one of you stays in the home while the other moves out • you both move out and end your tenancy, or sell your home • one of you buys the other out so they own the home • you both stay in the home and live separate lives If you decide to continue living in the same house after you separate, it’s a good idea to get a separation agreement drawn up showing the date of the separation. If you claim benefits, these may be affected and

...give free, confidential, impartial and independe nt advice to help you solve your problems

so it would be a good idea to seek advice Managing your money There’s no easy way to work out how to divide your money, but if you and your ex-partner can figure it out between yourselves it’ll be cheaper than asking a court to help you decide. You’ll need to work out how much money you have in bank or building society accounts, savings or investments. You’ll also need to include any debts you share, like credit cards or loans. There is a tool on our website to find out how to divide your money and belongings when you separate. If you don’t think you’ll have enough money SIf you’re married or in a civil partnership you can ask for financial support from your ex-partner as soon as you separate. This is known as ‘spousal maintenance’ and is a regular payment to help you pay bills and other living costs. Who to tell that you’ve separated CIf you pay council tax, you should tell your local council - you’ll pay less if you live on your own.

You’ll also need to tell your local council you’ve separated if you get Housing Benefit or council tax reduction. If you get benefits, being part of a couple might affect how much you get. You should tell the office that deals with your claim that you’ve separated as soon as possible - most benefits have a 30-day deadline. If you get tax credits, you should tell the HMRC within 30 days. Paying for solicitors You’ll usually need to talk to a solicitor at some point during your separation. To help keep your legal bills down, you should: • try to agree as much as you can with your ex-partner before you go to a solicitor • find out as much as you can about separation • find out if any solicitors near you offer free advice - this normally won’t be more than 30 minutes, but it could still help • ask your solicitor if they’ll work for a fixed fee - this way, you’ll always know exactly how much you’ll have to pay Read more on our website about the help you can get with legal costs, or check on the gov.uk website if you are entitled to legal aid.

Mini Police

As I write this article, tschools have all returned from the Christmas holidays. A In the run up to Christmas Mini Police across the area helped out at Christmas Fayres in schools and local villages – they were handing out crime prevention advice, selling bike lights and engaging with their local communities. Mini Police from one local school (Sutterton Fourfields) were asked to assist in a very special task – delivering gifts donated by local businesses to the Children’s Ward at Pilgrim Hospital. Accompanied by our Bobby Bear and Santa, they helped hand out gifts to children who were in hospital, along with toys and games for the ward to be used by future patients and families. January seems an appropriate time to highlight two topics which our Mini Police will be looking at over the coming months:

School Parking Our Neighbourhood Policing Teams across the county receive complaints throughout the school year (usually from September through to July) about parking around schools. The complaints – blocked driveways, parking on verges, parking on zig-zags, parking on yellow lines, restricting access, parking on blind bends… usually occur mornings and afternoon on weekdays – school run times. Our Mini Police will be

designing leaflets to hand out to parents asking them to think about their parking habits. Ultimately the only ones who can make a change are those parking inappropriately. If you are driving on the school run, please think before you park your vehicle. The yellow lines and zig-zags are there to protect your children around their school.

Online safety Christmas was a time for new gadgets in many houses – from laptops and tablets to games consoles and mobile phones, all of which now have internet access. As part of our Mini Police program, we look at online safety – and we encourage our parents to take an active role in this: • Are you aware what apps your children use? • Do you know the age restrictions for the games they play? • Have YOU checked their privacy and security settings? • Do you have an Online Family Agreement – a good way to agree rules and responsibilities for being online? Within our Mini Police session, we use the following as a guide from which our Mini Police create their own ‘Online Family Agreement’ based on the prevalent issues highlighted within the school e.g. use of social media sites, online gaming etc. https://www.childnet. com/ufiles/Online-safetyagreement.pdf

So many students at Boston High School have amazing talents. This is, again, evident from two gymnasts — Tallulah Hughes and Tia Robinson. Tallulah Hughes, aged 11, competed at the East Midlands Regional Championships in the open age level 3, finishing with 40.267. Due to this score, Tallulah has been selected to represent Lincolnshire at the Regional Team Championships. Tia Robinson competed at the Lincolnshire Floor and Vault County Championships, claiming a

bronze medal in the 14+ category at a score of 22.100. This gave her the amazing achievement of third overall. From this score, Tia has qualified for a spot on the Lincolnshire Floor and Vault Team. Both Tia and Tallulah, along with four other girls, will now team up with other gymnasts from different clubs to form a Lincolnshire team. Congratulations to Tia and Tallulah for these fantastic achievements — keep up the amazing work!

Boston College

Christmas is the time for festivities, food and fun but unfortunately, this is not the case for everyone. Many members of the local community will be dreading Christmas this year, as they may not be able to feed themselves or their families. The local food banks in both Boston and Spalding are regularly used by the College’s Learner Services Team to support learners and their families. As a way of helping and giving back, staff and students have spent the month of December collecting non-perishable food and other items to donate to this essential service to help those in need. The response was outstanding with a large variety of items donated including, tea bags, biscuits, and

tinned food items, as well as toilet rolls, shampoo and shower gel. Speaking of the donations Dawn Telford, Head of Boston College’s Learner Services, said, “As we use the foodbank to help support our learners and their families we have decided it is only right that we help, especially around this time of year. It is also a fantastic way of ensuring our learners develop and understand the importance of social responsibility.” Jo Maher, Boston College Principal added, “We are proud to support the local community by donating to both the Boston and Spalding food banks. The generosity from both staff and students has been fantastic.” A brilliant effort from all and a massive thank you to everyone who donated.

T

he first few weeks after a baby arrives is certainly hard work – sleep deprivation, hormonal changes, aches and pains to name but a few, but when is life supposed to return to normal? When is it normal to feel normal? That’s a story that could fill this whole magazine not just a column! Truly, it’s different for everyone – and if we break up ‘normal’ into emotional and physical it gets even more diverse. Physically back to normal depends on the kind of birth you have had. Generally a csection takes longer to heal from than a vaginal birth, but not always, and a vaginal birth with stitches generally takes longer than not having any. That said, there are women who have lots of stitches who are pain free after a week, and those who’ve had none that are still struggling with bruising, swelling or pain months after. Your health before you were pregnant and your iron levels also make a difference. Even if you are physically healing after a few months, your emotional state is something altogether different! Postnatally, women are very vulnerable. Hormones change your perspective on things to focus your priority on your baby. However, in a modern world we are not well placed to be able to do that. We have many things going on at once – relationships, family, work, friends etc. We want to be included in the world that existed before we had a baby and feeling unable to rejoin that world because of the logistics of having a small person can make us feel like we have lost our place in the world.

12 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

For many women, feeling disconnected can cause anxiety and depression. For others, hiding away at home (or conversely trying to do too much) is the result. As with most things, finding your ‘people’ while you’re pregnant is helpful in making the transition easier. However, from personal experience, the friends and the offers of support that come before baby is born are not always translated postnatally. Visits and meals never materialise and once the ‘newborn’ stage is over, the offers decrease further. It is arguably after the 4th trimester (the first 12 weeks after baby is born) that the most support is needed because while the physicalities of healing and looking after a baby are easier (probably!) the emotional, hormonal, raw vulnerableness of it all is still in full swing. We don’t feel confident, our bodies are different shapes to what they were before, we second guess what other people mean when they say things to us, we take things to heart more than normal; in short…we are a mess! The hormones don’t help with our minds playing tricks on us, but unlike any other times of our life, we generally keep things to ourselves as we don’t want to be seen to be ‘failing’ at this motherhood thing It’s a tough place having a small baby, but sometimes not as tough as being inside your own head.

fter two years of hard work by owners Murray Chambers & Business partner Chris Dixon the restaurant is housed within a beautiful cottage that has been restored sympathetically, keeping the original features, including the stunning thatched roof, intact. The interior décor is in keeping with the outward appearance of this quaint cottage and the black beams, columns, trusses and bracing contrast with the light green panelled walls to create an Olde English feel.

Fresh, Locally Sourced Ingredients

The Thatched Cottage is run by Murray’s daughter Vicki Dillamore and long time employee Sharon Ealham, alongside Head Chef, Sean Elderfield and Sous Chef, Thomas Niblock. We work closely with our wonderful local suppliers including M&H Butchers, Mel Wards Butchers, Boston Sausage, Fresh Drop, Pilgrim foods, East Lincs Seafoods to bring the very freshest ingredients to your plate in dishes that are created with care and passion in our kitchen. We pay just as much attention to the drinks we serve and you will find a well-stocked cellar with wines from across the world alongside craft ales and beers.

Whisked Away

with Love

With Valentines Day this month, that better time to plan a romantic getaway and surprise your other half? Europe is commonly considered to be home to some of the world’s most romantic cities – from Paris to Prague, there’s something for every hopeless romantic. So where are the most romantic cities in Europe? Here’s our top picks for you to choose from! If your budget doesn’t stretch to a trip away why not theme an evening around a city? A French, Spanish or Italian inspired meal with candles and romance will go a long way without leaving home!

Amsterdam No city in Europe quite compares to the romance exuding from the Dutch capital. For the most romantic experience, be sure to rent a house boat and soak up the authenticity from the canals themselves.

Amsterdam

Copenhagen

Paris No list like this would be complete without the city of love itself. Second only to Amsterdam (a more quaint, charming, personal city of romance), Paris is still one of the unbeatable cities to visit with your significant other. Be sure to pop a bottle o’ champagne under the Eiffel tower and indulge in some French cheese – bliss! Prague Prague has quickly become one of Europe’s most discovered cities – hustling and bustling with tourists from around the globe. But it still comes in as one of our top three cities of romance for it’s inevitable charm. The architecture alone will have you feeling loved up. Visit in winter for a less-crowded experience and enjoy the muddled wine and Christmas charm. Budapest Budapest remains to be one of Europe’s most underrated cities, but did you know it is also one of the most romantic? Head to Budapest before the crowds impact any further – it is swiftly becoming a new European favourite.

Paris 16 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

Vienna The Austrian capital is bursting with charm at every turn. Think imperial architecture, horse carriages, nights at the opera and day trips to royal residences.

Venice No list encapsulating romance in Europe would be complete without mention of the city of Venice. Although nowadays overrun by mass tourism, the city is still a favourite for loved up couples – and it’s not hard to see why. Ljubljana The Slovenian capital doesn’t get nearly as much credit as it deserves. Often overlooked in favour of nearby Bled (which is indeed stunning), Ljubljana has an out-of-this-world charm that makes it one of the most underrated cities in all of Europe. Florence Florence (or Firenze) is one of Italy’s most loved cities. With the tuscan sun, melting gelato and your loved one by your side – you can ‘t go wrong. The only drama you’ll have in Florence is trying not to cheat on your partner and fall in love with the city itself. Or the food… oh the food! Zurich Often mistaken for being the Swiss capital (a title which instead goes to Bern), Zurich is perhaps the most loved city in all of Switzerland. Of course, it depends who you ask. But you’d be kidding yourself not to reference Zurich as the most romantic Swiss city! Copenhagen Cozying up by the outdoor fire and enjoy a muddled wine or rich hot chocolate sound like heaven to you? Head to Copenhagen, one of Northern Europe’s most romantic cities.

Shop Local and Support Your Town Choosing to shop with your local businesses instead of the larger chain stores has many benefits, some of which we are sure will surprise you - from how this decision can help improve the economy and environment to how it can also help to increase tourism and local jobs. The local economy Local businesses are the backbone of our economy, the epitome of the UK high street and often large tourist attractions. But what you may not know is that shopping at a local business, rather than a large chain, is actually better for the economy of your community. To ensure a strong and sustainable local economy foundation people need to buy locally. Research shows that £10 spent with a local independent shop means up to an additional £50 goes back into the local economy. This is simply because the nearby shop owners, who you are spending your money with, will then put that money back into your local community by going into local pubs and restaurants etc, thus circulating the money and allowing your community to thrive. Online isn’t always best For many of us, we believe that the absolute best deals can only be found online. Through TV adverts,

radio adverts and online adverts we are constantly shown great deals that seem too good to be true, and often this is sadly the case. However, you might be surprised to see just how competitive the prices are in your local shops and businesses. Customer service and shopping experience The fantastic thing about independent businesses is that they are run by people, not by boards, stockholders or algorithms. Although many chain businesses do have good customer service, you can’t beat the personal touch of a local owner who knows everyone in the neighbourhood. They can offer you a product that is suitable for you, your house and even your area. Building relationships between the local owner and the local customer goes further than just a purchase. It is also worth remembering that local shops stock an inventory based on their own customer’s choices rather than

national fashion trends. This is so you can find what you want rather than finding what they want to sell you. Healthier environment This one might surprise you, but choosing a local company over a chain can actually have a positive impact on the environment. This is because the majority of local companies are found on the high street and are within walking distance, rather than a drive away to the nearest large shopping centre. If more people chose to pop to the local high street rather than driving to the superstores, this would considerably reduce air pollution, reduce traffic and improve the quality of the nation’s high streets. Originality and individuality In a world that is becoming increasingly dominated by chain stores, which have been designed to look the same, independent businesses bring much-needed originality and variety into communities. They can be a real breath of fresh air into an area populated by generic stores and companies. The British entrepreneurs Through supporting your local businesses, you are actually helping to support local entrepreneurs who once may not have had a chance of getting their company started. Through more people choosing the smaller, local option over the larger chain businesses it is allowing more entrepreneurs to get their foot in the door, thus making for a very healthy economy. Help to create the identity Some local businesses will actually help shape the identity of the area. A high street filled with unique, vibrant

18 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

and colourful shops will attract more tourism and help to make the community a more popular and financially healthier area in which to live and work. Local business for local charities Buying locally means that you are actually supporting your own community in more ways than you think. This is because many local businesses support local charities that are particularly relevant to that area, and by shopping locally you are helping to increase the number of local donations. Of course, large chain companies do support charities, and there is no right or wrong one to support, but if you would prefer to help support a local one then buying locally is a great way of doing this. Healthy competition The reason local companies have such great and competitive prices is purely thanks to healthy competition. This, of course, goes for all types of companies. A marketplace of thousands of small businesses is the most reliable way to ensure innovation and low prices over the long-term. If things go wrong It’s important to know that if anything was to go wrong you have a local company to go to, someone to talk face to face with. Large commercial companies will often provide you with a phone number for their customer service team, which is often not in the UK, and make you wait for what seems like an eternity until you get to speak to someone. This simply is not the case with a local business. They will often prefer to meet up face to face, rather than on the phone, and find out exactly how they can help fix the problem.

Health & Beauty

A Pain in the Heel Your feet take the whole weight of your body, so it’s important to take good care of them. The College of Podiatry shares their advice for one of the commonest issues regarding the feet – heel pain!

What is heel pain? The heel is a specialised part of the body designed to absorb the impact of your body weight when walking, running or undertaking any other form of physical exertion or weight-bearing exercise. When pain does develop, it can be very disabling, making every step a problem, which in turn affects your overall posture. What causes the problem? Heel pain is a common occurrence and in most cases the pain is caused by some form of mechanical injury caused by small repetitive injuries that occur at a rate faster than the body can heal them. Heel pain can also be caused by lower back problems or inflammatory joint conditions. The following types of heel pain are not exhaustive but may help you appreciate the complexity of heel pain and why specialist advice can be helpful. Plantar fasciitis (or fasciopathy): This is the most common caused by damage to the fascia ‘band’ (similar to a ligament) which connects the heel bone to the base of the toes. This condition can be caused in various ways including extensive running,

walking or standing for long periods of time, especially when you have a sedentary lifestyle. In particular, a change of surface (e.g. road to track), poor shoe support, being overweight, overuse or sudden stretching of your sole, as well as a tight Achilles tendon, can lead to this condition. Heel bursitis (subcalcaneal bursitis): This is an inflammation of a bursa (a fluid-filled fibrous sac) under the heel bone where the pain is typically more in the centre of the heel than that experienced with plantar fasciitis and significantly worsens during the day. This condition can be caused following a fall from a height on to the heel. Heel bumps: These are firm bumps on the back of the heel, usually caused by excessive shoe rubbing in the heel area, or the thickening of the tissues associated with a tight Achilles tendon. Heel bumps: These are firm bumps on the back of the heel, usually caused by excessive shoe rubbing in the heel area, or the thickening of the tissues

associated with a tight Achilles tendon. Tarsal tunnel syndrome: This can feel like a burning or tingling sensation under the heel within the arch of the foot with occasional loss of sensation on the bottom of the foot. This is caused by compression of the tibial nerve as it passes the inside of the ankle. Tapping of the nerve just behind the ankle bone (known as Tinel’s test) will stimulate the symptoms of the condition. Chronic inflammation of the heel pad: This is caused by a heavy heel strike or sometimes a reduction in the thickness of the heel pad which can give rise to a dull ache in the heel which increases during the day. Fracture: Often caused following injuries such as falling from a height or landing on an uneven surface. Sever’s disease (calcaneal apophysitis): This painful condition affects young children, usually between the ages of 8 and 12, especially those who are physically active or undergoing a growth spurt. It results from inflammation of the Achilles tendon where it attaches to the heel. Achilles tendonosis: This condition occurs when the Achilles tendon is placed under more pressure than it can cope with and small tears develop along with inflammation and in some cases can lead to tendon rupture. These tears become a source of further injury, which can lead to swelling within the tendon, hence the name ‘tendonosis’ (sometimes referred to in error as ‘tendonitis’). Who gets it? Heel pain can affect everyone,

20 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

whatever your age, but those more commonly affected include those in middle age (over 40s age group), those who are overweight or stand for long periods of time, as well as athletes. How do I know I have it? With plantar fasciitis, there are often no visible features on the heel but deep localised painful spots found in or around the middle of the sole of the heel, and pain is usually worse on standing after long periods of rest, particularly first thing in the morning. With bursitis, pain can be felt at the back of the heel when the ankle joint is moved and there may be a swelling on both sides of the Achilles tendon. Or you may feel pain deep inside the heel when it makes contact with the ground. Is it serious? Heel pain is a common condition and in most cases will diminish following some routine self-care measures. If the pain persists longer than three weeks, it is best to seek professional advice from a podiatrist, as there are many types of heel pain, each with their own different causes and separate forms of treatment. What are the treatments? If you experience heel pain, some simple self-care measures include: • Avoid wearing ill-fitting or uncomfortable shoes • Wear shoes with good heel cushioning and effective arch support • Minimise walking or exercising on hard ground • Rest regularly and try not to walk or run too fast • Wear a raised heel (no more than 6-10 mm higher than normal) • Lose weight if you are overweight For more advice on this and other issues please speak to a specialist or visit The Royal College of Podiatry at www.cop.org.uk

Welcome To David Hallgate Opticians Why Is An Eye Examination So Importan t? One in two cases of sight loss can be avoided. Your eye health is very important to us, and only by having the most advanced equipment can we provide early detection, monitoring and treatment of eye diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration and diabetes. David Hallgate Opticians have invested in a Spectralis 4D eye scanner. Unlike colour retinal photographs our system helps us to look below the surface at each layer of the retina to create a high definition map, that provides us with such detailed and invaluable information. Prior to your sight test we will use the Spectralis 4D eye scanner. You will simply sit at the instrument and we will scan your eye using a light beam. The scan only takes a few seconds and you can blink normally. There is no discomfort and the camera will not touch your eye. One in two patients with glaucoma don’t know they have the disease. Glaucoma is a hereditary disease. 50% Of patients are unaware they have the condition. One in two patients with diabetes are unaware they have the disease. Diabeties is a serious disease that can cause sight loss. Early detection and treatment is so important to prevent this.

One in two sixty year olds have some form of cataract. Hundreds of thousands of cataract procedures are carried out every year. To get the best outcome its important to have a full eye health check beforehand. One in two cases of serious sight loss is caused by age related macular degeneration. Aston Martin Vantage PROS ‘N’ CONS à Looks à Power à Handling à Comfort à Storage space

4 4 4 4 8

FAST FACTS

(Aston Martin Vantage as tested)

T

he new Aston Martin Vantage is the stuff of dreams for those who love luxury sports cars. As a lad, I never thought I’d get to sit in an Aston, let alone end up being invited to test-drive one. But life sometimes has a way of working out if you’re prepared to put the graft in. I’m not necessarily talking about me; it’s Aston Martin who should be patting its own back. The company has worked like a dog to get the new Vantage right – and it’s paid off. Why? Well, let’s begin with the looks. It’s awesome from the rear, with detailed lights and a rising rear spoiler. It’s a little

less lively at the front, although the Vantage’s shark-nose is aggressively appealing. What really works, though, are the perfect proportions. The twoseater is sinuous – almost hunterlike in the way it appears poised to pounce on unsuspecting prey. Under the metal, the up-todate Vantage is like its sibling, the elegant DB11. Both models house the Mercedes-Benzsourced 4.0-litre V8 lump. Mind you; the twin-turbo assisted engine has been tuned so that it feels like it’s always belonged in Aston Martins. Stomp your foot on the accelerator and the car will shoot you from zero to 62mph in 3.6 seconds. It will then propel

you to 195mph - if you’re in a place you can do that without losing your licence, or your life. Open the Aston up, and you’re greeted with low-slung sports seats, but they’re easy to get comfortable in. Behind the wheel, the Vantage is cosseting, and the overall cabin is far less clinical than a Porsche 911’s. It’s traditional, yet it’s still thrilling. What’s more, the Benz-derived switchgear is nicely incorporated, and the controls are intuitive to use. As you might expect, the sports car isn’t meant to be the most practical vehicle – there’s not even a glovebox. And, as hinted at earlier, this is a motor without back seats, but you can just about get some golf clubs under the tailgate. Practicality aside, the new Vantage is as close to perfect as you can get. Pushing the Aston Martin-badged starter button brings the car to life with a roar. It’s a fulfilling sound, particularly with the four-pipe sports exhaust attached. Driving off in Sport (the most relaxed of the three settings) and letting the eightspeed automatic gearbox do its thing, discloses a smooth change that’s matched to a remarkably

à Max speed: 195 mph à 0-62 mph: 3.6 secs à Combined mpg: 26.9 à Engine layout: 3,982cc 8-cylinder turbo petrol à Max. power (PS): 510 à CO2: 245 g/km

Price: £120,900 biddable ride. Spool through Sport+ and Track settings, and the powertrain, damping and steering progressively alter the new Vantage’s temperament to make it angrier, wilder and noisier. Whichever mode you opt for, fun is always on the menu. On British tarmac, the Aston delivers confidence-inducing handling with immediate reactions - and the brakes do a top job of erasing pace. I drove the Vantage around the meandering highways and byways of the Cotswolds, and it excelled. This state-of-the-art Aston Martin Vantage is the first to be spawned under the automaker’s fresh leadership line-up – and you can tell. Yes, a 911 will give you better practicality, but the rival Porsche won’t quite give you the feeling you get from driving a legendary British model.
