Babyballet come to Boston Miss Nina is delighted to be bringing the Magical World of babyballet to the Boston area. Classes commence 24th February 2014.The multi award winning Babyballet Song and Dance Academy is a wonderfully, exciting, educational movement to music programme which is thoroughly enjoyed by pre-school boys and girls from 6 months to 6yrs. Designed to encourage babies and young children to enjoy the benefits and joys of song and dance, babyballet provides the children the opportunity to express themselves within a fun, safe and caring environment with the help of babyballet’s very own characters. There are many activity classes available to pre-school children, but babyballet skips out in front of the rest, introducing babies, toddlers and young children to the basic principles of Ballet through nursery rhymes and babyballet’s very own songs, through this they will automatically gain confidence,
For more details and to register your little star, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Miss Nina looks forward to welcoming you to class.

Boston Wheelers team up to support Sport Relief For the past 80 years Boston Wheelers Cycling Club has been a community-based club promoting all levels of cycling in the town and throughout the region. This year they are riding for Sport Relief 2014. On Friday 21st March a group of Wheelers will set off on an epic ride – the challenge for each is to cycle 300 miles of the county’s roads within 24 hours. That’s the equivalent of cycling from Boston to Aberdeen, or to Brighton and back in a day! The route will take them to all four corners of this beautiful county of Lincolnshire, from the windswept Fens to the heights of the Wolds, and to the county’s towns in between. The riders are sponsored by businesses and individuals from throughout the local community, and all funds raised will be
Friday 21st March donated to Sport Relief 2014. For more information contact: Alan Sharpe on 07534 405123, or myself. Naturally we’d love to see coverage of the member’s efforts. They’re training now, and raising money already. Any coverage you’d be able to give would be a fabulous boost to both at this time.
Lawton’s Coaches Annual Fundraiser raised an AMAZING £1260.60 of which 100% is split 50/50 between these two worthy causes as the two drivers gave their time voluntarily whilst Liz & Geoff Lawton donate the vehicles & diesel free of charge. *This brings the total over the past four years to more than £6500* …thanks must also go to the passengers of course who support us year after year, for without them we could not have accumulated this incredible amount… Darren Grose is the son of one of our drivers, Keith who some will know as Kiwi (now retired), who suffered a major brain stem stroke at the age of 34 - he is now 41. This has left him with ‘lockedin’ syndrome, which means his brain is locked in his own body. His brain is fine, but he can’t move, talk, eat or drink. The funds have already bought a specialised computer to help him communicate by blinking and also a lift for a vehicle to enable him to get out and about. The next big purchase will be an electric wheelchair and the money raised this year will be a step nearer towards the reality.

Businesses urged to take action on obesity rise Businesses need to take an active role in promoting physical activity to combat obesity – claims an organisation leading the nation’s biggest workplace physical activity campaign. With obesity on the rise, coupled with a recent study by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) revealing that only 28 per cent of employees receive advice from their employers on health and wellbeing issues; coordinators of the Lincolnshire Workplace Challenge are calling business leaders across the county to take action. Employers are being encouraged to sign up to the campaign, run by Lincolnshire
Sport, in collaboration with the County Sports Partnership Network (CSP network) and British Heart Foundation Health at Work programme. Workplace Challenge provides workers with the opportunity to use a free online activity logger to keep track of all their physical activity and active travel. The idea behind the platform – which has already proved a success in pilot areas across the country – is to encourage workers to be more active and make exercise a part of their daily routine. The Workplace Challenge invites workers to log their activity in reward for points for their place of work. They will also get the
chance to go head to head with their other local businesses and even take part in interworkplace competitions and leagues. Organisers hope that workplaces will get involved by organising sport orientated team days out or by launching a walk to work or lunch walking scheme; employers will directly benefit from a healthy and revitalised team of staff who are active both in and outside of work. Visit www.workplacechallenge.org.uk/ lincolnshire to sign up today. There will also be a number of opportunities available for businesses to sponsor and support community workplace challenges.
WIN a Treat for Your Feet! Tammy Clark the owner opened the Orchard Retreat clinic recently and has been a podiatrist for the last 15 years Our knowledgeable and experienced team can offer a free consultation and biomechanical examination to assess your foot, gait and posture. Through a combination of clinical knowledge, experience and state of the art manufacturing techniques, we prescribe quality custom corrective orthotics used in the treatment and prevention of numerous foot problems and associated ailments that can affect the foot, ankle, knee, hip and the lower back, with outstanding results. (We can offer an enormous range of orthotics style) The Latest technology uses a 3D optical foot scanner to capture accurate measurements of the patient’s feet. These scanners are an extremely precise device measuring thousands of different points of the contours of the foot. Conditions we can help with orthotics HEEL/ARCH PAIN Heel Spur / Plantar Fasciitis Heel pain occurs when the plantar ligament beneath the foot is
constantly pulled and strained due to the foot collapsing into pronation or supination. This causes a condition called plantar fasciitis or heel spurs. There can be many different foot types that can be affected by this condition and it can aggravate all areas of the foot including the heel, inner or outer arch and even the ball of the foot. BUNIONS Bunions are caused by excessive weight being forced through the medial side of the first metatarsal head (behind the big toe). The pressure can cause the big toe to start to deviate inwards causing a lump to form on the outside of the toe. This can lead to a burning sensation or general pain and look unsightly. Accurate orthotics cannot cure a bunion, but will realign the foot and thus reduce pain and prevent the bunions becoming worse. BALL OF THE FOOT (METATARSALS) Pain and symptoms occurring in this area are usually due to a drop in the metatarsal heads which form the metatarsal arch in the ball of the foot. This can lead to metatarsalgia (a general pain in this area), Morton’s Neuroma, March fractures, corns and calluses.
We have teamed up with Orchard Retreat to give 4 lucky readers a treatment worth £25.00. All you need to do to be in with a chance of winning is answer the question below and email your answer and contact details to info@simplyboston.co.uk or post to SIMPLY BOSTON PO Box 1014, Spalding, Lincs. If you would like to contact Peter with a specific question, please email info@simplyboston.co.uk
In every issue, Peter Bedford, The leader of Boston Borough Council, gives you an insight as to what is happening in and around Boston The recent flood in Boston has, quite naturally, refocused residents’ thoughts on the town’s flood protection barrier scheme. It is crucially important that this scheme progresses as fast as possible, and so I want to sound a warning now to those who might inadvertently derail the project and cause delays. What we don’t want to happen is for this to be slowed by a public inquiry. I have read claims recently that the barrier is being built in the wrong place. On behalf of the Boston Barrier partnership between Boston Borough Council, the Environment Agency, Lincolnshire County Council, and Black Sluice Internal Drainage Board, I would like to respond by saying that the preferred location for the barrier has been determined by reviewing the technical, economical and environmental benefits and is the best possible for Boston. The Port of Boston approves of the barrier scheme at the proposed location. In 2011 there was extensive public consultation to decide the preferred location for a barrier. As a result this has been identified as just downstream of Black Sluice lock. Initially we investigated the possibility of a barrier at the mouth of the Haven. But after looking at the impact it would have on the operations of the port, the increased cost of a larger and more complex barrier, the lack of scope for additional benefits for Boston and the damage it would cause to The Wash – an internationally designated habitat
– we discounted this as a possible location. Even if the barrier was just a tidal flood defence, the preferred location would still be where it is now. Subject to the £99.2million funding being approved, the barrier and associated works will give Boston one of the best standards of protection from tidal flooding in the country. Importantly, this barrier will also help to grow the local economy by bringing about significant opportunities for regeneration along the town’s waterfront by managing water levels as well – which could not be done as effectively any other way. We know that water level management will have some impacts on existing users of the Haven who currently navigate to The Wash. We are continuing to work with these users to address these concerns. The devastating impact of the flooding in December has only brought into focus the urgent need to get a barrier built as soon as possible. I would ask Boston residents to support this vital project to reduce flood risk and secure economic regeneration for the town in the future. Boston Borough Council’s share of council tax will be frozen again this coming financial year – for the fourth year running. Lincolnshire County Council has already also announced that it will not be increasing its share. This recognises that times are difficult for residents. Boston Borough Council has been able to keep its council tax demand down due to good management, partnership working, economies and efficiencies without cutting jobs and without reducing services. A planning application to move the council’s environmental services depot from rented land in Fen Road to land we own near the docks has now been submitted for approval. This is part of a project, including a shared waste collection service with our neighbours in East Lindsey, which will save the council £100,000 a year.

House of the Hanged by Mark Mills
Mr Stink by David Walliams
Just the book for a long winter evening, House of the Hanged is set in a summery South of France in 1935 where former spy Tom Nash is rebuilding his life. His past catches up with him when an attempt is made on his life and Tom believes that he is in real danger. He is surrounded by those he holds near and dear who have all gathered to spend the summer in the Riviera warmth. Has one of them betrayed him to his enemies? Tom needs to find out the truth to save his own life. This is a real page turner and the surprises keep coming.
David Walliams star is definitely in the ascendant having written some of the best-selling children’s books of the past few years and seen them turned into highly successful television programmes as well. Mr Stink has always been a real favourite. Chloe is a very lonely little girl until she meets Mr Stink the local tramp who is the only person who has ever been nice to her. She offers Mr Stink a place to stay in her garden shed but her kindness has all sorts of repercussions. With Quentin Blake’s illustrations and David Walliam’s talent for funny and thoughtful stories this is well on its way to becoming a real children’s classic.

Advice
Bailiffs at your door? by John Willoughby
If you owe money, one of the ways your creditors might try to get their money back is by using bailiffs he role of the bailiffs is to take your goods away and sell them to raise money to pay your creditors. If you’ve received notice that the bailiffs are coming, don’t ignore it. The bailiffs charge fees to come to your property and your debt will just get bigger if you don’t take action. Bailiffs shouldn’t threaten or harass you. If they do, you can make a complaint. You should also check the fees added to your bill, to make sure they’re not charging you more than they should. The rules about bailiffs are very complicated and what the bailiffs can do legally depends on what your debt is for. Bailiffs are commonly used if you have council tax arrears or if you have a court judgment against you. They can also be used for unpaid fines, child support arrears, rent arrears, income tax arrears and parking penalties (fines). The bailiffs almost always need a court order to take your goods away. Check with an advice agency whether creditors can threaten you with the bailiffs without taking proper legal action. If you’ve received notice that the bailiffs are going to come and take your goods away, you should get advice urgently. Do not ignore the notice. The bailiffs charge fees to come to your property and your debt will just get bigger if you ignore them.
Do I have to let the bailiffs in? In many cases, you don’t have to let the bailiffs in and they can’t force their way into your property. However, they are allowed into your property without your permission
if they can enter without breaking in. This is called ‘gaining peaceful entry’ and includes getting in through an unlocked door or open window. Sometimes, bailiffs are allowed to break in to your property. For example, if you’ve got unpaid criminal fines, bailiffs working for the magistrates’ court can, in some circumstances, use reasonable force to get into your home to seize goods. Also, in some circumstances, bailiffs can, with the court’s permission, force their way into commercial property if there is no living accommodation attached. However, it is unlikely that a bailiff would be allowed to break into your property in other circumstances. If this happens, you should get urgent legal advice.
Will they take everything away? There are rules about what the bailiffs can take and these rules depend to some extent on what the debt was for.
Depending on the sort of debt you owe, you might be able to complain:
Can they take things that don’t belong to me? Again the rules are very complicated. The

How can I complain about the bailiffs who come to my house? There are rules and policies about how bailiffs should behave. For example, they should treat you fairly. They are not allowed to threaten you or pretend to have more legal powers than they really have. They must take special care when dealing with people who are considered vulnerable, for example if you’re elderly, disabled, seriously ill or find it difficult to speak, understand or read English. Bailiffs shouldn’t discriminate against you because of your age, race, sex, disability, sexuality, or religion. This would include using racist, sexist or homophobic language.

basic rule is that bailiffs can only take away things that belong to the person who owes money.
• to the person you owe money to (the creditor) • to the professional body the bailiff belongs to. There are several different professional bodies, depending on what sort of bailiff it is, so ask the bailiffs if they belong to a body and if so, which one • to the court • to the police, if the bailiffs are committing a criminal offence, for example, threatening or assaulting you. If you have reasons to complain about the bailiffs, it’s best to get expert help. Don’t be ashamed to get help about bailiffs – it’s a very common problem.

Calling all chip lovers,
it’s National Chip Week! ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
Organised by Potato Council, this year’s Chip Week runs from 17th - 23rd February
T
hrough an extensive range of promotional activity, it aims to highlight the freshness, good value and great tradition of Britain’s high street chippies - and inspire the nation to tuck into a tasty portion! Whether it’s cod or haddock, comes with salt and vinegar and pickled onions, is eaten straight from the paper in the street or taken home as a tea time treat, fish and chips really is the nation’s favourite dish. But let’s go back to the beginning with the origins of the humble potato. Whilst first cultivated in Peru over 8,000 years ago, the potato didn’t arrive in Europe until the early 1500s and wasn’t grown in England until 1597. Introduced to Europe by the Spaniards, we get the word ‘potato’ from the Spanish word ‘patata’. Because they are rich in starch, potatoes are one of the world’s most important crops, up there with maize, wheat and rice. The potato has even been grown in space! Today, there are thousands of varieties of potato but the UK enjoys around eight ‘common varieties’ which we use in our cooking with King Edward and Maris Piper varieties said to make the best chips. Whilst it is accepted that fish and chips as a meal began in England, there is, to this day, great dispute as to whether it began in the north or the south. Either way, the country as a whole enjoys its fish and chips, regardless of geographic location.
Chip Week – Facts and Figures A visit to Chip Week’s website, www.chips. lovepotatoes.co.uk provides some fantastic chiprelated facts: 1. More than 1.6 million tonnes of potatoes are made into chips every year in the UK – weighing the same as over 14,000 blue whales or 4,000 jumbo jets. 2. The land required to grow potatoes for chips is 33,664 hectares – big enough to fit London’s Hyde Park 237 times, or 47,000 Wembley football pitches. 3. Over 250 million fish and chip meals are sold in the UK each year – that’s nearly 685,000 a day! 4. In one year we eat nearly three billion meals containing chips, with lunch time the most popular time to eat them (64%) and tea time the second favourite (24%). 5. Brits use at least 26 different words for fish and chips.
Where we live affects our chip choices, with people in the South preferring salt and vinegar on their portion while the Scottish are more likely than people in any other region to choose a portion of curly fries. People in the Midlands have a fondness for curry sauce and cheese with their portion; the Welsh are more likely than other regions to eat their chips straight from the oven; and a quarter of Londoners favour the French fry.
6. Using the right spuds for chips can make all the difference - to ensure your chips are lovely and fluffy try King Edward or Maris Piper. 7. Fish and chips outsell Indian takeaways by two to one. 8. The world’s largest fish and chip portion was made in July 2012 by Fish and Chips Ltd, London. The fish weighed in at 47.75kg and the chips 23.5kg, breaking the previous Guinness World Record which was held by the Wensleydale Heifer pub. 9. Celebrity chip fans include Rihanna, Kate Moss and David Walliams - and Michelle Obama recently revealed that her biggest food weakness is French fries. 10. A survey of 1,000 adults showed ‘chip shop chips’ are the nation’s favourite chips with nearly half (45%) of all respondents putting them first, followed by French fries (16%), oven chips (14%), potato wedges (8%) crinkle cut chips (7%) and curly fries (7%).

Focus on Kirton
Kirton’s
marvellous music makers ❱ BY KATE CHAPMAN
It’s recently celebrated its 140th anniversary, but Kirton Brass Band is still going strong, bringing joy to all those it entertains at events across the area
T
* To find out more about Kirton Brass Band, visit its website www.kirtonband.co.uk
he band, one of the oldest in the country, was founded in 1870 by villager Henry Woodward, who came up with the idea after playing a few old brass instruments with his nephews and friends in his garden shed. Today players come from Kirton and further afield including Skegness, Sleaford and Spalding to for weekly rehearsals and concerts, while new members are always being sought. Secretary Tony Fell said that with regular practices and engagements – such as summer fetes and Christmas concerts - the band has a great social side and is an ideal activity for anyone looking for a new challenge. “If you’re looking for a change, then come and join our friendly band, where fun comes first,” said Mr Fell. “We’re always looking for additional members, particularly from experienced players, although we can always find a place for any interested player.” When the band first formed there was no electricity, which meant there was plenty of demand for music, particularly at fetes and community occasions. In 1900 Woodward moved to a new house and had a band practice room built above his coach house. At the same time more interest in the music developed thanks to the German groups touring the country, while hundreds more bands were formed with collieries and cotton mills all supporting their own.
Local firm Langley’s supported Kirton’s group employing anyone who was a good musician. Membership fluctuated between the wars, while learner classes were introduced to encourage younger boys to play. Over the coming years, the band moved home several times, with practice venues including a purpose-built room behind the Stag & Pheasant pub, Middlecott School and the Methodist church school room, where it still meets today. Some of its most notable performances included playing the national anthem at the top of the church tower to mark Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee, staging a light parade for King George V’s silver jubilee and another parade to celebrate the coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. During the 1960s and 1970s the band took part in numerous competitions, gaining first place at area contests in Leicester and City of Oxford. It also reached finals in London twice and won other prizes in the East Midlands region too. Current musical director is Nick Tudball who has een with the band for two years. There is also a thriving youth band - aimed at those aged eight to 18 - which meets every Thursday night from 6.30pm to 7.30pm, and is led by experienced music teacher Mel Hopkin. For those members wishing to study for music grades, the band also offers individual lessons in addition to its regular band practices.

Valentines
Valentine’s Day Gifts ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
Valentine’s Day is celebrated the world over every year on February 14
C
elebrating love, this is a day for exchanging cards and gifts with those most important to you. It is also a great opportunity for young love, with cards often being sent anonymously. In celebrating love and romance we send 25 million cards and spend a massive £1.3bn on gifts. Below we list the most popular gifts for him and her as well as giving you some ideas of how to add that personal touch.
Gifts for Her: 1) Flowers. With so many florists in the area this is a really good opportunity to shop locally and support these companies. Rather than picking up flowers from the supermarket or (don’t even think about it!) the local garage, take the time to talk to a florist and get a bouquet made up of her favourite blooms. 2) Home Cooked Meal. While restaurants are all well and good there’s nothing like a tasty home cooked meal to unwind and relax at the end of the day. 3) Lingerie. A perennial favourite with the men but please make sure you find out the correct sizes and where possible speak to the assistants in the lingerie departments as it is something they do day-in, day-out! 4) CD. Yes you know which artists she loves but how about being retro and putting together a ‘mix-tape’ of all of her favourites? 5) Jewellery. Rings, bangles and bracelets are the most popular here. Not forgetting big, shiny engagement rings… 6) Chocolates. Another traditional gift. But step away from the Milk Tray and put some thought into it. Many Chocolatiers give you the option of creating your own box. 7) Wine, Bath & Spa products. A glass of wine, a bubble bath and some luxury scrubs and creams to use. Always a winner! 8) Hotel Stay. This one does require some thought. Where do you most like to be as a couple? In the city or secluded in the countryside? 9) Romantic Dinner. So neither of you have to cook, head out to your favourite restaurant. 10) Perfume. Providing you have a snoop on the dressing table first it’s easy and it’s practical. And always well received.
Gifts for Him: 1) Experience Day. Top of the list most years, let him go wild. Driving sports cars, riding in helicopters or touring his football team’s stadium, there really is something for everyone. 2) Aftershave. A Valentine’s Day classic! 3) Watch. To make sure he’s on time for your date! 4) His Favourite Bottle. Be it fine malt whisky or Jager, you can’t go wrong with a bottle of his favourite tipple! 5) MP3 Player. Loaded with his favourite tunes or perhaps some new music for him to try. 6) Personalised Golf Balls. Or other sports equipment. A man whose hobby is golf is never too difficult to buy for! Head for your nearest club shop. 7) Football Tickets. Make a day of it and shop while he’s watching! 8) Books. This is a really broad type of gift! You can buy books by his favourite authors, something funny or full of facts. Maybe even a book to learn new skills. Just be brave and buy a book and not a book token! 9) Camera. If your man loves gadgets then a new camera might be at the top of the list. Definitely speak to your local retailer though as there are so many types of camera, each specialising in different uses so to make sure you get the right equipment do your research first! 10) Wallet. Somewhere stylish to keep your money when he takes you out for the evening…
Fun facts about Valentine’s Day Richard Cadbury produced the first box of chocolates for Valentine’s Day in the late 1800s. In medieval times, girls ate bizarre foods on Valentine’s Day to make them dream of their future husband. The most fantastic gift of love is the Taj Mahal in India. It was built by Mughal Emperor Shahjahan as a memorial to his wife. About 3 percent of pet owners will give Valentine’s Day gifts to their cats and dogs.

alf of all people aged 75 years and over in the UK live alone, while one in ten people aged 65 years or over say they are always, or often, feel lonely – that equates to just over a million
people. And even more shockingly, half of all older people consider the television to be their main form of company. To help combat the problem of loneliness and isolation among our older generations, charity Age UK has developed a series of befriending services. These work by assigning each older person a trained befriender, who provides friendly conversation and companionship on a regular basis over a long period of time. This relationship not only promotes well-being and confidence, but can also help people in later life to keep in touch with the outside world. Many local Age UK branches - including our own Spalding District - provide these befriending services, some via the telephone, while others operate a system where a volunteer visits the elderly person in their own home. This vital service provides a link to the outside world and often acts as a gateway for other services and valuable support. As well as providing emotional support, volunteers can also pick up on practical or health support needs the older person they befriended

may have and - through liaising with Age UK - ensure the extra support is provided. Through the charity’s ‘Call in Time’ service, the elderly person receives a regular daily or weekly phone call, with the relationship structured so each befriender makes the call at a regular pre-agreed time. Those who have used the service have nothing but the highest praise for it, saying the regular contact has made a huge difference to their lives, while others who have tried it urge anyone else feeling isolated to give it a go too. All of Age UK’s befrienders are fully trained volunteers, who freely give up their time to help support lonely older people. The charity is always looking for more helpers and is keen to hear from anyone interested in getting involved. Alternatively, if you know of a lonely older person who you feel might benefit from Age UK’s befriending services, the charity urges you to get in touch too.

N
ow all the Christmas and New Year festivities are but a distant memory, I’ve had a little time to reflect, and decided that although I’m sticking to my resolution of ‘no resolutions’ this year, I might try and make one or two other little changes. Top of my list is time management. I don’t mean lateness - that’s always been a bug bear for me. Although I must admit now I have two little people in tow I sometimes find getting anywhere on time is not always an easy feat. No matter how organised or early you think you are, you can guarantee someone will need the toilet as soon as you’ve locked the door, fall over in a muddy puddle on the driveway so they need changing, or if you’ve got more than one, you can bet your bottom dollar that as soon as child number one has their coat, shoes and hat on they’ll remove all said items of clothing while you’re attending to child number two. This process will then be repeated at least twice if
you’re in a particular hurry! However, I digress. What I’m referring to is how I actually manage my time - as no matter what I seem to do, there are just never enough hours in the day. I’m fortunate that I’m able to fit my work in around looking after Nancy and Peter, for those mums who work full-time hours, I take my hat off to you, as I really don’t know how you do it. In between the school run, various activities and clubs, cooking and cleaning etc I constantly hear myself saying, ‘Just wait a minute,’ or ‘when I’ve done this’. I guess we’ve all been there, but the trouble is, they’re up growing up so fast, I’m in danger of missing out on all those precious moments because I’m too busy tidying up behind them or making sure the washing’s folded neatly. I saw one of those quotation plaques the other day bearing the message ‘Excuse the mess, my children are making memories’. I might just have to invest in one and place it above the kitchen sink as a timely reminder.....

Home Project
A lofty solution ❱ BY KATE CHAPMAN
Think about your loft, and what springs to mind? A storage space for all your old junk, or perhaps a place suitable for setting up a giant train set?
I
f you’re running out of space at home, converting your loft could be the easiest way to create more room. As one of the most underused spaces in the home, a loft conversion is a far more cost effective solution than selling up and moving to a new, bigger property. The cost of an average loft conversion equates to around one third of the cost of moving to a property with an extra room, while the addition of a new room can increase the value of your home by up to 25 per cent. So, whether it’s an extra bedroom, office or child’s playroom your want, as long as you can measure 230 cm from the floor to the tallest part of your roof, you have sufficient height for a loft conversion. Under permitted development rights planning permission is not normally required for a loft conversion, although approval is required if you extend or alter the roof space and it exceeds specified limits and conditions. You can visit www.planningportal.gov.uk to find out more about the rules and regulations relating to this type of extension. It’s also worth bearing in mind that building regulations state that if a loft is to be transformed into a bedroom, bathroom, study, or playroom it must have a permanent staircase. Although the stairs leading to your new room need not be as wide as steps to the lower floors. If your loft is to be used as a ‘habitable space’ on a regular basis, your design must also comply with building regulations on issues such as fire safety, energy efficiency, ventilation, lighting and insulation. There are many practical elements to consider when planning a conversion, so it’s always wise to ask friends, family or colleagues who’ve undertaken a similar project for their advice before you start, as well as seeking the expertise of a professional builder or architect. If it’s bedroom you’re creating, think about how much extra it will cost to add an en-suite bathroom, but bear in mind how this might compromise the room’s proportions and factors such as will your system will be able to cope with the extra pressure required to supply water to an extra floor. Think about electrical points, have you got a party wall agreement with your neighbours, and how soundproofed will the new room be? How will you heat the new room - is your current boiler big enough to cope with extra radiators? Choosing the right windows is also an important factor as you need to make sure it is well enough insulated and ventilated.
“...building regulations state that if a loft is to be transformed into a bedroom, bathroom, study, or playroom it must have a permanent staircase.”
