I am always amazed at how many people stick to their new year’s resolutions and then how many people give up after 10 days! How are you getting on with yours? So far I am sticking with mine – to create a better work and home life balance, but we are just a few weeks in so we’ll see how long it lasts! I really do love what I do so being at work really isn’t a chore but then my household jobs can get left! I am so pleased to see the nights slowly starting to pull out, I really am a summer creature and cannot wait for it to be light when I wake up in the mornings. With the doom and gloom of January now firmly behind us, it’s time to start looking to February and hopefully the first signs of Spring.

Hello! Are you all used to writing ‘2015’ yet? I think we will be well into Spring before I finally get the hang of it! I must have enjoyed 2014 so much I’m clinging on to it! February is here and love is in the air – we take a look at food and the role it has to play on Valentine’s Day. Elsewhere we’re looking out for your general health this month with visits to the dentist and appointments you can attend quickly in your lunch hour such as the optician. So why not make February all about you? Enjoy the issue

Sculptor to create art installation
James Sutton is an artist, sculptor and community arts facilitator based in the East Midlands. He has worked as a sculptor since graduating in 2005, working in a variety of materials such as stone, metals and bronze from his studio in Gainsborough, producing work by commission for both public and private bodies and has exhibited throughout the country. He also regularly runs all kinds of creative workshops for the community. James is enthusiastic about encouraging communities to engage with the arts, and developing new strategies in which community engagement can be sustained. James said: “I have been commissioned to cultivate a series of stone carvings to be placed on the grass along the Windsor Crescent path. We want these carvings to be relevant and to show the history of the area, tell local stories or reflect what the current residents love about the area. Each carving could represent something different, they could make up a series or tell a story.” James is looking for enthusiastic participants to get involved with the project. To develop the piece, James is asking for suggestions or ideas for imagery on the public art piece for Windsor Crescent.
Air Ambulance Appeal Local man Chris Walton is running the London Marathon in April for the Lincs & Notts Air Ambulance and is looking to gain sponsorship. The Air Ambulance has no public funding and relies on donations. Flying around 1000 missions a year and taking less than 20 minutes to get to an incident it can be at a hospital in just 8 minutes. Being in such a rural area, the nature of Lincolnshire’s roads and the large farming community it is a very important part of the ambulance service. Chris turns 50 within 3 weeks of finishing the marathon and the last time he ran was 25 years ago! He started training in January 2014 and to date has run about 600 miles which has taken 83 hours of commitment. He is looking to raise as much money as he possibly can for this worthwhile cause. To sponsor Chris, you can contact him via his Facebook page or donate directly through JustGiving, www.justgiving.com/ChrisWalton145 4 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON
The sculpture aims to improve the riverside, park and the overall experience the community has when visiting the area. The piece will reflect the people who live within the neighbourhood and will largely enhance the area. James Sutton said: “I am really enjoying finding out about the Windsor Crescent area and its residents. The site is beautiful, full of wildlife and heaped in history. The tricky part is deciding which aspects to focus on and represent in the carvings. That’s where I really need the help of local people, they are the ones who will walk past it and hopefully enjoy it for years to come so they should be the ones to decide.” An online survey has been established for the project, where the public can contribute their personal ideas (which can be found at https://apps.facebook.com/my-surveys/windsorcrescent). You do not have to be a resident at Windsor Crescent to pass on any suggestions! James is also contactable via his Facebook page, email address and website: suttonstone@hotmail.com www.jamessutton.co.uk www.facebook.com/James.Sutton.Transported.Blog
Boston & District U3A Meeting On December 16th Boston and District U3A held their Christmas meeting with 118 members and 7 visitors. Special guests were Mayor Alison Austin and consort Richard Austin. Vice Chairman Liz Boyce organised the party. Celebrations included mince-pies and amusing readings from members. Their newly formed singing group led by Alan Bull and accompanied by Ronnie Robinson provided entertainment. After that came country dancing with members having a chance to join in too. The art group display was greatly admired and there was chance for everyone to catch up with each other. The meeting drew to an end with a raffle and all singing a final carol.

Community safety priorities Feedback from almost 1,000 residents on priorities for fighting crime and improving community safety in 2015 has confirmed that Boston Borough Council was right to be among the first in the country to introduce tougher new street-drinking rules. Drinking in public places and associated issues were highlighted as being among the major concerns of residents in Boston borough. Nearly 1,000 residents across the borough, East Lindsey and South Holland have given their views on crime and community safety to help shape the East Lincolnshire Community Safety Partnership’s priorities for 2015. Young people in particular have been keen to share their views with nearly half the respondents aged 16-24. One lucky resident from Skegness even won
themselves £30 in vouchers. In Boston borough a quarter of residents are most worried about being a victim of anti-social behaviour. Littering and drinking in public places are issues that residents believe to be a big problem. It is anticipated that the new Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) introduced in January will address the street drinking issue, and this should have a knock-on effect of reducing litter such as discarded cans and bottles and other debris left by those drinking in public. A quarter of respondents feel less safe than they did 12 months ago. This was again linked to seeing people drinking in public which can be intimidating. The partnership hopes that the new PSPO will also help to make people feel safer over the coming months. Councillor Stephen Woodliffe, portfolio
Rolec Services does the double at Boston Business Awards Night Rolec Services has won the awards for both Manufacturer of the Year and Business of the Year at the 2014 Boston Business Awards. The event took place recently at Boston’s Princess Royal Arena and involved many leading local businesses competing to be crowned winners in specific categories. The contest aimed to highlight companies that work hard to boost the area’s economy - providing employment, careers, and products and services to be proud of. Rolec’s PR & Marketing Manager Nathan Black said: “All the staff at Rolec are really proud to be recognised by our peers as being the Business of the Year, as well as the Best Manufacturer. “There were lots of other high quality entries from various organisations who showed just how thriving business can be in the region if both opportunity and innovation are used to their full potential.” Rolec, formed in 1990, has become one of the world’s leading specialists in the design,
manufacture and installation of outdoor and indoor electrical connection, hook-up and distribution equipment. From its awardwinning purpose built office, warehouse, and factory complex in Frampton, Rolec employs more than 100 people and operates in over 40 countries. The company has worked with many leading industry names including BMW, Mercedes, Next, Brighton & Hove Albion FC, SSE, The Caravan Club, Bourne Leisure, Camper and Nicholsons, MDL Marinas, Hilton Hotels, Porsche, Sony and Tesco. Rolec has also been working closely with Renault and Nissan on new EV products.
holder for community safety at Boston Borough Council, said: “It is encouraging to know that so many of our residents took part in the survey. We really value their comments and they can be assured that we really are guided by what they have told us. “In particular, it is refreshing to see that so many younger people have given their views. Concerns in Boston regarding drinking in public places and littering demonstrate that the council has been correct in pushing ahead to be among the first in the country to introduce tough new rules governing street drinking.” The priorities will be agreed at a meeting of the East Lincolnshire Community Safety Partnership in February 2015. A report containing the survey results is available at; www.boston.gov.uk
Acting Chief Executive Phil Drury has been appointed Boston Borough Council’s acting chief executive, taking over from Richard Harbord, who left the council at the end of November. Mr Drury, formerly the deputy chief executive, was unanimously recommended by the council’s chief officer employment panel and appointed by the full council on Monday night. Leader of the council, Cllr Peter Bedford, said Mr Drury would remain in post for no longer than 12 months, pending a permanent appointment to the position. Cllr Bedford said work would begin on looking at options for a permanent shared or part-time chief executive. Mr Drury was also appointed acting returning officer and electoral registration officer – posts traditionally filled by the chief executive. Savings of £10,000 a month will accrue during the period the post is filled on an “acting” basis. Mr Harbord resigned after struggling with mounting family health issues for some time. My team of constables and PCSOs make regular visits to Boston’s Primary schools were they deliver a structured programme of learning around the force’s Policing with PRIDE ethos With respect to these lessons PRIDE stands for; Personal safety (including road, rail, water, stranger and internet safety) Respect and citizenship (being proud of your neighbourhood) It’s good to be me (promoting individuality and special properties) Diversity (recognising and celebrating differences) Every child matters. The aim of the project is to develop a strong partnership between the Community Policing Teams and schools and this learning is delivered under the mascot of Bobby Bear. In the autumn my team set up a drawing competition for the pupils to create a new friend for Bobby Bear. There were numerous entries across all age ranges with prizes donated from local businesses for the winner and runners up ( who are in the attached picture). A member of my team has set up the “suspended coffee” project with three cafés in the town where you can purchase a hot drink for yourself and then purchase another for somebody who is in need of a hot drink but can’t afford one. People in need can go into the café and ask if
there have been any suspended drinks purchased and are then given a drink purchased previously. This means that some of the most vulnerable people in the town have somewhere to go to get a hot drink. The cafés that are kindly participating in this scheme are the Little Kitchen on Red Lion Street, Finn’s Coffee Lounge on Fountain Lane and Archie Hardwick’s on Dolphin Lane. 2014 has been another busy year for Boston but I am pleased to report that compared with this time last year, Boston has experienced over 150 fewer crimes with the most significant reductions in the burglary and theft categories. My team and I will continue to do all we can to maintain and reduce this even further so that Boston can continue to be a safe and pleasant place to live.

If you would like to contact Peter with a specific question, please email info@simplyboston.co.uk
Each issue Peter Bedford, leader of Boston Borough Council, discusses the important topics in and around Boston I indicated in my New Year message last month that there would be fresh challenges ahead in 2015, and 2014 was not even spent before the first major test for the new year arrived. As tradition has it local government had its Christmas present from central Government in the week before Christmas – the annual rate support grant settlement. This is the amount of cash given to local authorities by Government to help pay for services such as refuse collection, street cleaning, sports and leisure provision and the myriad of other things councils do for their residents. This “special delivery” always gives the council’s financial experts plenty to do just before the Christmas break, as they work out the finer detail of what the Government’s ruling will mean for Boston Borough Council. Years ago it was a much simpler system – councils received their cash from Government, topped it up with money collected from rates and away they went. In recent years things have become much more complicated and much more difficult. We have had reducing amounts from Government because of the recession, there have been restrictions with penalties for raising council tax too much, new rules for business rates and add-ons such as new homes bonuses and transformation cash. Areas which are thriving have benefited from some of these incentives quite well – more money for local councils to keep from business rates where business has been booming, and more money by way of new homes bonus where there has been expansion and development which attracts new home building. Boston has not been left behind – we are working hard to ensure that we collect all business rates we are due now that the Government has incentivised councils by allowing us to keep 40 per cent of that collected. And we have received a growing new homes bonus thanks to an upturn in development and we receive transformation cash for the good work we have done to
improve efficiency. In order to meet the Government’s aims for local authorities the council’s savings target from 2014/15 to 2017/18 stands at £1,168,000. Our funding cut from Government for 2015/16 is £600,000. The cost of running all our services has reduced from £9.5 million in 2011/12 to £7.3 million in 2015/16. So you can see this has been a massive challenge for us. But it has been a challenge we have met. This time round we prepared for a £600,000 cut in Government funding and just before Christmas the Government announced a proposed cut in the borough council’s funding of £608,000. It is what we expected to within a few thousand pounds. It could have been a lot worse if it hadn’t been for the increase in new homes being built within the borough. It’s going to be hard, but we will work with what we’ve been given and produce a balanced budget. There will be no increase in council tax. We gain the equivalent of a one per cent council tax increase from the Government by freezing council tax. If we increased council tax we would lose the one per cent, so this is the best way forward for the borough’s council tax payers and the council. There will be no cuts in frontline services. We have been realistic, we’ve prepared and we continue to do our bit to address the acute financial situation the country finds itself in. None of this means we stand still – much was accomplished in 2014 and good works to make the area better for those who live, work and visit here will go on. Boston Bus Station has been improved, on time and on budget, making the area much more pleasant and inviting for visitors to the town. New bus shelters have been installed, replacing the old ones which were vandalised, covered in graffiti, dirty, smelly, weather worn, past their sell-by date and unwelcoming to visitors. Many people alighting at the bus station take a route into the town centre via St Botolph’s footbridge. This area, too, is being improved with a widened footpath near the B&M store and landscaping. Cllr Peter Bedford.

LIBRARY NEWS
By Boston library staff, Boston Library
Boston Library February 2015 Phew! It’s all happening at Boston Library. We’re celebrating Harry Potter Night, National Libraries Day and more by dressing up as favourite book characters, running competitions and generally having fun in the Library over the cold winter months. It all kicks off with National Storytelling week that runs from Saturday 31st January – Saturday 7th February. Set up by the Society for Storytelling and funded by the Lottery and Arts Council England, it promotes the oldest art form in the world. To celebrate we’ve teamed up with Bloomsbury Publishing to offer a Harry Potter Experience on Thursday 5th February 4pm5pm. Book tickets now to discover Diagon Alley in the library, design your own dragon egg, find out if you’re a Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw or Slytherin. On Friday 6th pre-schoolers and their grownups can join us for stories and rhymes 2pm-2.30pm.
Our big finale is on Saturday 7th National Libraries Day. Visit the library dressed up as your favourite fictional character to be in with the chance to win a prize. Or if dressing up is not your thing come in and let us know how much you love your library by popping a comment on our wall. We haven’t forgotten the adults either. Representatives from the Ancient World Society will be at the library from 11am on 7th February to talk to members of the public about the Society; a must for ancient history fans. 1. Thursday 5th February the Harry Potter Experience 4pm-5pm it’s free but please book tickets in advance. Age appropriate 8-11 years 2. Express Appointments
Making The Most Of Your Lunch Hour Rather than just grabbing a sandwich at your desk and catching up on social media, what can you do to make your lunch hour work harder for you?
I
❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
f you work in an office it is very easy to stay at your desk during your lunch hour and either end up working as you eat or doing very little at all. Provided you work centrally and not in the middle of nowhere there are many things you can do during that hour, from both a practical and pampering point of view. If you are more rural there are still things you can do at your desk which don’t involve working!
4) Try and fit in some of those jobs that take up valuable time on your weekend. Drop off or pick up dry cleaning, go to the bank, pay your bills (you could even go for it and do all three in an hour!)
1) Go to the Gym. Half an hour of exercise will leave you full of energy for the afternoon as well as all the health benefits it brings. For the best results have a chat with the trainers at the gym and devise a personalised programme to make the most out of the short time you have.
6) Learn a foreign language. Take it one step further and utilise your computer to learn a new language. Rosetta Stone is a popular choice for learning a language and can be accessed via your computer at work or on your smartphone. There are a huge number of languages to choose from so why not give it a try?
2) Fitness Class / Yoga. In the same vein as the Gym, there are many lunchtime fitness classes which run for half an hour. From aerobic exercise to toning classes and relaxation such as Yoga you can decide how energetic you are feeling before you commit to a class!
7) Mini spa at your desk. Grab your hand cream and eye cream and have a little desk indulgence. You can also take the chance to shape and polish your nails.
3) Appointments. Within your hour you can have your eye test with an Optician, visit the dentist for a checkup or go to the Doctors. Looking after your health is so important so rather than putting it off, do it in your lunch hour and you won’t even feel like you’ve taken time out of your day.
“Go to the Gym. Half an hour of exercise will leave you full of energy for the afternoon as well as all the health benefits it brings.” 14 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON
5) Read a book. If you do want to stay at your desk then try not to work. In the UK almost 4 million of us don’t read for pleasure and we say it is because we don’t have time. Well there’s time in the middle of the day on your lunch break – even if it is just ten minutes at a time.
8) Beauty appointment. Saving the best for last! There are many beauty appointments that you can attend which are classed as “express” which usually means they fit nicely around a lunch hour. The most popular include express facials, manicures, pedicures, waxing and head massage. You can also book in to the hairdressers and have a shampoo and blow dry – go back to looking as fabulous after lunch as you did first thing!

Valentine’s Day
Celebrating Valentine’s Day This year why not head to your favourite restaurant?
V
“...whether your preference is a candle-lit sit down meal at an intimate little restaurant or grabbing your favourite takeaway and heading home for a quiet night in, put food at the centre of your Valentine’s celebrations.” 16 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON
❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
alentine’s Day is a fantastic day to celebrate. Christmas is long over and the boring donothing days of January have passed so what better way to really start enjoying the year than by spoiling the one you love the most. A massive 1 billion cards are sent worldwide on Valentine’s Day with different countries observing their own traditions. Giving gifts is very popular with every year bringing ever more extravagant options – gone are the days of roses and chocolates, now it is all about driving sports cars on experience days, spa breaks and city weekends. Another popular choice is to go out and enjoy your favourite meal. We are lucky to have a wide variety of restaurants in the area so you can really take your pick – so why spend time slaving over a hot oven when you can take the time to glam up before you head out! You can then sit and relax, enjoying time with your partner while the food is prepared for you and at the end of the evening you can go home and the best part of all, there is no washing up waiting for you or a dishwasher which will need loading! There is an old saying that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach and this is as true today as it ever was. We also know that women are very visually driven, so a tasty meal presented beautifully should be win-win! Here are some of the foods most associated with Valentine’s Day, if you’re feeling really adventurous, try and include them all in the one meal! ❤ Chocolate. The undisputed champion
when it comes to Valentine’s Day. As well as a popular gift, who can resist desserts which are full of chocolate? Perfect for sharing (just ask for an extra-large helping!!) ❤ Strawberries. A red berry in the shape of a heart. What could be more romantic?! Associated with the Roman goddess of love, Venus, you could team these up with the aforementioned chocolate for extra impact. ❤ Honey. This sweet food is said to have been served as Mead (honey wine) to newlyweds which is where the term ‘Honeymoon’ could have come from. Honey can be used in both savoury main course dishes and delicious desserts. ❤ Asparagus. A tradition from across the Channel, men in France who were about to marry were served three helpings of asparagus to keep them strong and virile! Used in starters and main courses, asparagus has many health benefits. ❤ Chillies. Full of vitamins and antioxidants, the fiery properties of chillies make them a superb ingredient to really add a kick to a meal. So whether your preference is a candle-lit sit down meal at an intimate little restaurant or grabbing your favourite takeaway and heading home for a quiet night in, put food at the centre of your Valentine’s celebrations.

Dental Health
The Importance of Dental Check-Ups How often do you visit the dentist for a check-up? Some go every six months, others when there is a problem. So what do dentists recommend?
R
www.nhs.uk
❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
egular dental check-ups allow your dentist to work with you to keep your mouth healthy and to pick up any problems early (or even potential problems!). Many people aren’t keen on the dentist which makes them leave any problems until the pain is so bad they can’t take it anymore. By this time there is often very little the dentist can do by way of prevention. The word ‘regular’ will have different meanings for each patient. Your dentist will gauge the gap needed between appointments. For some it may be a few weeks if you are prone to problems or your dentist is keeping an eye on a particular condition. For others it may be as long as two years between appointments. If you look after your teeth and gums well then don’t be surprised if you only see your dentist once a year or even less! At a dental appointment your dentist will first ask about how your teeth, gums and mouth have been since your last appointment. This is your opportunity to have a discussion with your dentist before you are actually sat down in the chair. Don’t ever feel embarrassed to ask about anything you may not be sure of – dentists have heard it all before and will be able to answer you. And try to be honest with your answers – if you are asked if you floss regularly and you don’t then say so! Your dentist will take the information you give and be able to offer you recommendations about how you can improve your oral hygiene. Once you are in the chair you will have an

examination of your teeth, gums and mouth in general. If there are any problems your dentist will highlight them to you and will then tell you what needs to be done next. Nothing is likely to be done on that appointment and you will need to book in again to have any necessary work done. It might be that between appointments you have an x-ray to get a better look at where the problems are or you may be prescribed a course of antibiotics should you have an infection. Your dentist may also recommend you visit a dental hygienist. The job of a dental hygienist is to professionally clean your teeth by removing plaque and tartar from your teeth. They will look closely for signs of oral diseases such as gingivitis, and provide other preventative dental care. Your hygienist can also give you advice on how to improve your brushing techniques and show you how to floss well. They also educate patients on ways to improve and maintain good oral health. If you have never visited a dentist then it is never too late to start. NHS dental services are available to all. There is no need to register with an NHS dentist, just find a practice which is near to you (either home or your place of work which may be more convenient for daytime appointments) and call to see if an appointment is available. If your preferred practice is full or doesn’t provide NHS care, this doesn’t mean that no NHS dental care is available locally. A look on the NHS website will be able to tell you which dentist in your area currently accepts patients.

Car Maintenance
Driving in Winter The worst thing that can happen on a journey in winter is for your car to break down. With a little maintenance beforehand you can ensure a hassle-free winter in your car
A
ccording to the AA the number of breakdown callouts they respond to doubles in the winter – they are so busy during this season that they have to put on extra patrols. There is also a large increase in the amount of accidents on the roads when the weather is snowy or icy. When temperatures are low it is especially important to perform some routine checks on your car to do all that you can to stay safe. During winter, when the days are short, coming home from work will often mean a journey in the dark. On these types of journeys lots of pressure is put on the car battery as the heater, lights and windscreen wipers may all be working at the same time and the car isn’t making a long enough journey to give the battery sufficient charge. If your weekend journeys are light then an overnight trickle charge on the weekend will give the battery a chance to recharge. Antifreeze is also very important during the winter. Without it you could find yourself hundreds of pounds out of pocket to repair a frozen engine. The amount of antifreeze needed varies from vehicle to vehicle so check your handbook or take your car along to your local garage and they can do it for you. Make sure your wiper blades are in good condition, firstly for when you have to defrost your windscreen in the mornings but also your windscreen gets dirty very quickly in the winter and so you need to be in a position to clean it quickly and well. Reduced visibility can be very dangerous and quickly lead to accidents. Along with good wipers check you have enough screenwash for your journey and that it will not freeze. Have a look at the label – most good quality screenwash will have protection to at least -10 degrees.
❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
For long journeys it is advisable to make yourself up an emergency kit so if the worst should happen you will be prepared. In the kit you should have the following items: • Jump start cables • Warm clothes and blankets • Wind up torch • Ice scraper and de-icer
• Mobile phone charger • Reflective Warning Sign • First Aid Kit • Emergency Food and Drink
A trip to the garage or even the petrol station to check the pressure on your tyres as well as the depth of the tread can literally be lifesaving. Your car’s manual will give you the correct tyre pressures for your front and back tyres and air is usually free at the petrol station and garage. The minimum tread depth for your car’s tyres should be at least 2mm but at least 3mm is recommended during winter. When you check your tyre tread have a good look at your tyres to make sure there is no damage to them.

FIAT 500 S
T
They say “small is beautiful”, and the petite FIAT 500 is no exception to that much used turn of phrase
he revised car went on sale in the UK in 2014 with new style, comfort and technological enhancements. A fresh feature is the seven-inch digital instrument display, which combines cuttingedge technology without disrupting the trademark aesthetics of the cabin. Standard on the 500 S 0.9i (105ps) TwinAir model, on test here, the centre of the instrument display can be configured to show various trip computer readouts, such as distance travelled, instant fuel consumption and range. In addition, the screen reconfigures when the Sport button is activated on the 103bhp powered car. The ‘eco’ gauge, which measures how efficiently the FIAT is performing in real time, transforms into a turbo-boost gauge, emphasising the dual-personality of
22 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON
❱ BY TIM BARNES-CLAY the fun-but-frugal engine. I did feel slightly annoyed when I first climbed into the FIAT and slammed my knee against the centre console, but I’m a six foot tall chap and it’s a small car. What did I expect? Well, I didn’t anticipate it to be so lush inside – that’s for sure. The funky cabin soon made me forget about my aching knee. Actually I completely forgave the 500 S for causing me pain once I started her up. On the move, the feisty Italian is a genuine giggle to drive because the TwinAir engine is ‘rev-happy’ with a decent amount of ‘go’, thanks to the turbo bolted to it. Top speed is a surprisingly fast 117mph and 0-62mph takes 10 seconds. This is more impressive than some 1.2 and 1.4-litre four cylinder petrol engines. The ride can be a little too firm over bumpy surfaces and this causes handling to become slightly jittery, but other than that the FIAT 500 S does a great job. It’s actually more practical than I thought it would be too. The rear bench takes two child seats without any problem, and when my wife borrowed the car to take our toddler to nursery she raved on afterwards about how easy it was to manoeuvre in the manic crèche car park.
Reassuringly, the FIAT 500 range achieved a maximum five-star rating in the gruelling Euro NCAP crash test safety programme. When it accomplished this, it was the first time that a car of such compact dimensions, (3.5 metres in length), had achieved a top ranking, and astonishing that a vehicle of its type had been equipped with seven airbags as standard. In fact, the FIAT 500 S offers general levels of equipment more usually associated with cars of a far higher segment, with anti-lock braking, remote central locking, electric front windows and door mirrors, as well as electric power steering. The car also has mobile phone connectivity, air conditioning, 16 inch alloy wheels and a very useful 50:50 split/folding rear seat with head restraints. What’s more, the FIAT 500 personalisation programme offers a range of over 100 bespoke accessories which, generating more than 500,000 possible trim, colour and option combinations, gives you the opportunity to personalise the model in ways you never thought possible! At just £13850 on the road for this particular 500 S variant, you really can’t go far wrong if madcap, funky motoring is your cup of tea.

ohn Tooley, proprietor of Mister T Carpets, was left wondering what to do next when his premises in Wormgate were flooded in December 2013. Not wanting to waste any time he set about transforming his warehouse which he is now settling nicely into. Mister T Carpets can now be found on Craythorne Lane (just past Boots, turn left after Specsavers, 50 metres down the lane on the left). The new space makes a fantastic showroom - it is lighter, brighter and more spacious than the previous shop, and this enables John to display a wider range of floor coverings than before. The extensive range covers all tastes from traditional to ultra-modern in both carpets and vinyls. There is wheelchair access and parking available. If you are travelling by car, take the slip road off John Adams Way towards Blackfriars Art Centre (see map). John prides himself on the knowledge he has gained over his many years of trading and he believes that attention to detail is paramount when helping customers select the correct flooring. If you are thinking about changing your flooring then you can either call into the store to see what is on offer or there is a home pattern book service where John will, by appointment, come out to see you in

the evening to discuss your requirements. Within the samples you will find flooring to suit every budget. Once you have made your selection and the quotation has been accepted, the flooring will be expertly fitted by John and his colleague Geoff, who between them have over 60 years of fitting experience. The typical time from ordering to fitting is 7 to 10 days so you won’t have to wait weeks for your dream flooring. John wants the entire process to be a pleasant one, saying: “Buying a carpet should be a good experience, done at your own pace rather than being rushed through a huge warehouse, dealing with a new face each step of the way. We are proud of the personal service we offer from start to finish.” John has seen many trends come and go and this year is no different with stripes and tartan patterns currently topping the most requested list. Plain carpets remain popular, especially with the rise of the feature wall as they provide a nice contrast. No job is too big or too small whether it is a small room or your whole house. Holland. The Boston Crematorium commission is asking for artists to come up with ideas for an artistic intervention situated there that will be themed around the idea of a water feature. It will be a long lasting, weather resistant piece that can stand the test of time, providing a calming, artistically inspired piece that will enhance the area and the experience of those using the space. There will also be some community engagement activities as part of the project. Another location nominated by its local community was by the Boston Woods Trust. The theme for this project is Lincolnshire Botanist Sir Joseph Banks and the aim is to benefit the area with a
new artistic invention, with as much input from the local community as possible. The project will involve a partnership between the Boston Woods Trust and the commissioned artist allowing the art piece to be developed most suitably for the area and ensuring that the upkeep after installation can be maintained by the Trust. Both commissioned installations will complete in June 2015, with a community consultation phase from February leading up to the final pieces being installed. For more information on the commissions and to download the briefs, visit http://www. transportedart.com/artistscommissions-2015/. The deadline for artist applications is 9am on Friday 6 February.
