NEW strategy for Environmental Enforcement

Feeling Lonely? At some time in our life we may find ourselves unexpectedly alone after a divorce, separation or bereavement. Normal activities such as visiting the cinema, a restaurant or going on an outing can pose an obstacle when you are single again, as it may have been several years since you went out alone, and you don’t know anybody else who is single, and it is all too easy to stay at home. It can be just as difficult for men as well as women. At Boston Phoenix we can help you to reach out for a new beginning, to make new friends and to give you the confidence to rebuild your life. The Group, which was set up in 2010, is part of the NCDSW Phoenix family. We are not a dating agency, counselling service or a “singles club” but a social organization providing a safe and friendly environment for you to come to and make friends with people who know what it’s like to be in a similar position to yourself. We meet every Wednesday evening at The Queen of Spades, Wellington Road, Boston. We give our Members a variety of entertainment and activities and throughout the year we also arrange events “outside” of these weekly meetings. If you would like to come along to one of our meeting nights but feel too conscious of walking into the venue on your own, we can arrange for one of our committee members to meet you outside. For further details please call 07842543499.

An important new strategy aimed at cleaning up Boston has been recommended for adoption by Boston Borough Council’s Cabinet. On Tuesday councillors approved the council’s first environmental enforcement strategy, drafted in response to the council’s recent task and finish group on street cleansing. Its aim is to protect the health, safety, amenity, environment and local economy of and for people living in, working in and visiting the borough. Action on littering, fly tipping, dog fouling, graffiti, urinating in the streets, fly posting and abandoning a vehicle will all be covered by a robust strategy. It will raise awareness and, where necessary, prescribe enforcement action. Cllr Stephen Woodliffe, portfolio holder for community safety, said it was an important document which would promote prevention as an alternative to prosecution. “But we will not shy away from prosecution,” he warned. “The activities of a few cause considerable distress and damage

the reputation of our town.” Cllr Michael Brookes, deputy joint leader and portfolio holder for waste services, said: “We want to improve environmental quality and attractiveness by reducing environmental crime across the borough. We will enforce, but want to educate. It is far better that people accept that they have got a responsibility to keep the borough clean. Enforcement will be the last resort but we will be firm with fixed penalty notices.” He said individuals and groups and organisations which help the council with this work, such as those who join the annual Big Boston Clean-up and Big Schools Clean-up, litter champions, Greenscapers, Operation Fly Swat and others, are to be acknowledged with new environment recognition awards. There will be consultation with the public over a plan to make spitting an offence under littering legislation Cabinet also agreed to adopt a corporate enforcement policy to provide guidance for the council in carrying out functions as a regulatory authority.

Council tax support Changes made earlier this year to the scheme which helps those unable to pay their council tax in full have been recommended for adoption for another year. Boston Borough Council consulted the public on its Council Tax Benefit Scheme. Out of 3,201 recipients of workage council tax support only five responded. From April the support system was altered so that the maximum amount of financial support was set at 75 per cent of the annual council tax amount for all households other than pensioners and war widows of all ages. The changes were made because the Government abolished the national

Council Tax Benefit Scheme, and reduced funding to the council. This meant that Boston would have had a shortfall of almost £750,000 if it kept the benefit exactly as before. All working-age recipients of council tax support saw the level of financial support they receive reduced by 25 per cent and they are now expected to pay this element. Pensioners and war widows of all ages did not see a reduction in support and continue to receive a discount of 100 per cent of their council tax if they are eligible. The council has to agree a Local Council Tax Support Scheme each year and Cabinet agreed to recommend to full council that the 2014/15 scheme is the same as in 2013/14.

Operas, Ballets, Concerts and Theatre Productions at West End West End Cinema is about to embark on a new exciting offering of live broadcasts of Operas, Ballets, Concerts and Theatre Productions. These shows will be performed live on stages all around the world and beamed simultaneously via satellite to our screens at West End Cinema. We have various live performances from the world famous Bolshoi Ballet including Jewels on Sunday 19th January at 3.00pm. In the three acts of this ballet, Balanchine delves into the essence of each jewel, using music from different composers and incorporating different balletic styles. ‘Emeralds’, set to music by Fauré, is infused with a dreamy French romanticism. The fiery ‘Rubies’ fizzes with the energy and exuberance of jazz-age New York in its setting of ebullient Stravinsky. And ‘Diamonds’, using music from Tchaikovsky’s Third Symphony, evokes the high classicism of Imperial Russia, here brilliantly danced by the Bolshoi. Future Bolshoi presentations include Lost Illusions on Sunday 2nd February at 3.00pm and The Golden Age on Sunday 30th March at 4.00pm There will be numerous live broadcasts of Royal Opera House productions from Covent Garden including Giselle on Monday 27th January at 7.15pm. Giselle is the quintessential Romantic ballet. It transformed the dance world when it was first performed in Paris in 1841 and remains at the centre of the classical repertory. Although the choreography and designs have undergone many changes over the years, the essence of Giselle remains the same. The Royal Ballet’s production uses Marius Petipa’s classic

version (after the original choreography by Jules Perrot and Jean Coralli), first staged in St Petersburg in 1884. Giselle is the perfect way to discover classical ballet. Other offerings from ROH are Don Giovanni on Wednesday 12th February at 6.45pm, We are proud to announce a deal with the National Theatre to broadcast live productions of some of their magical performances. The first offering from the National Theatre is Donmar Warehouse’s production of Coriolanus; Shakespeare’s searing tragedy of political manipulation and revenge. This stage show see’s Tom Hiddleston (War Horse, The Avengers and Thor 2) in the title role. When an old adversary threatens Rome, the city calls once more on her hero and defender: Coriolanus. But he has enemies at home too. Famine threatens the city, the citizens’ hunger swells to an appetite for change, and on returning from the field Coriolanus must confront the march of realpolitik and the voice of an angry people. This will be broadcast live from Covent Garden on Thursday 30th January at 7.00pm. On Thursday 27th February at 7.00pm we will be showing a live Broadcast of the world famous War Horse. This show has been selling out theatres since 2007 and we anticipate a full house for this wonderful show. Later in the year we will be broadcasting performances from the Royal Shakespeare Company in Stratford-Upon-Avon. These will include Henry IV Part One on 14th May, Henry IV Part Two on 18th June and The Two

Gentlemen of Verona on 3rd September. We will be adding to the wide array of performances throughout the year and hope to add more exciting shows, performances and concerts. We hope that by broadcasting these performances that it can bring productions to people that would not normally be able to access such material and that we can bring the brilliance of London’s West End and stages from around the world to our own West End in Boston. Smoke free A proposal to ask smokers to stop lighting up in children’s play areas in Boston has received overwhelming backing following a consultation exercise undertaken by Boston Borough Council and supported by partners of the Smokefree Lincs Alliance. Findings from the consultation report show 96% of the responses to the countywide survey were supportive, with a slightly higher proportion (98%) in favour of a voluntary ban at Boston play areas. A total of 372 responded countywide (112 in Boston). Boston residents identified the following main benefits from smoke free play areas: Children’s health (93%), cleaner, safer environment (86%), discourages smoking (52%) and less tobacco litter (66%). Smoking is the leading cause of illhealth and preventable deaths in the UK with smoking prevalence in Boston much higher than the Lincolnshire average. Children are a vulnerable group and learn their behaviour from adults. They become aware of smoking at an early age; three out of four children are aware of cigarettes before they reach five years old. If children see smoking as a normal part of everyday life they are more likely to become smokers themselves. Smoking is a childhood addiction with most young people trying their first cigarette at 13 years old or younger. Initiatives, such as smoke free play areas can help to de-normalise smoking and reduce the risk of exposure to second hand smoke. Many areas nationally are creating smoke free play areas using voluntary codes. Locally the borough council has been allocated funding to pilot this initiative at Central Park and Woodville Road. Local schools will now be invited to work on designs for signage highlighting the voluntary ban within the enclosed play areas.

Residents parking scheme Motorists living in the Boston town area who were included in a residents’ parking scheme survey earlier this year are to be offered halfprice season tickets. They could save £220 on a normally-priced £440 season ticket, entitling them to park 24 hours a day, all year round in any council-run long-term car park. There will also be money-saving options for those who want to pay monthly (£20 instead of £40) and quarterly (£55 instead of £110). Boston Borough Council’s Cabinet on Tuesday agreed not to proceed with a residents’ parking scheme but introduce instead reduced price tickets for residents in the town centre survey area. The survey was conducted after residents in some streets in the town centre approached the council with concerns about difficulties parking near their homes. Some residents asked for a priority parking scheme. Cabinet heard that 1,245 questionnaires were hand delivered but only 170 residents responded. The survey failed to reveal any specific area where the majority of residents experienced problems parking, were in favour of a residents’ parking scheme and were

prepared to pay for it. Cabinet agreed the reduced price tickets should be made available from January 1 and be available to residents living in the following streets: Fydell Crescent, Queen Street, George Street, Liquorpond Street, High Street, South Street, Bridge Street, South Square, Paddock Grove, Bond Street, Victoria Place, West Street, Red Lion Street, Rosegarth Street, Norman Avenue, James Street, Fountain Lane, Trinity Street, Tunnard Street, Station Approach, Thorold Street, Station Street, Tawney Street, Lincoln Lane, Hartley Street, Tower Street, Robin Hoods Walk, Irby Place, Grand Sluice Lane, Irby Street, Maud Street, Norfolk Street, Field Street, Union Place, Grove Street East, Union Street, Foster Street, Witham Place, Threadneedle Street, Witham Street, Pen Street, Chappel Street, Grove Street West, Wormgate, Main Ridge West, Spain Lane and Quaker Lane. They will be able to use the following car parks: Botolph Street, St George’s Road, Tunnard Street, Artillery Row, Maud Street, Buoy Yard, Victoria Place, Staniland, George Street, Spayne Road and Station Approach.

In every issue, Peter Bedford, The leader of Boston Borough Council, gives you an insight as to what is happening in and around Boston I was encouraged when I attended the recent Boston Business Awards by the many good news stories to emerge. It was an evening charged with positivity and the perfect antidote to the negativity which seems to surround the lives of so many these days and which is so damaging to morale and reputation. What the business awards demonstrated is that there are enthusiastic people, many of them employers, who are forging ahead with determination in Boston borough and doing well. The impression left with me from the awards night has been further confirmed by the excellent news that Clinton Cards is moving back into Boston and that further expansion is planned by a major supermarket chain which has its UK banana-ripening facility in Boston. It shows that these businesses believe in Boston, and believe it is a town in which they can successfully trade . The way they care for Boston, and its environment, was also demonstrated by those who entered the Green Award, which I was privileged to present as this category is sponsored by Boston Borough Council. The award went to Boston West Golf Club. The standard of finalists was extremely high, with each one demonstrating strengths

ranging from rain water harvesting, lighting improvements, wildlife conservation, renewable energy and recycling. Caring for the environment has been on the council’s mind for a long time. Those who don’t share our concerns impact on the enjoyment of the places where we live, work, shop and visit. And that’s why the Cabinet has just approved the council’s first environmental enforcement strategy. Its aim is to protect the health, safety, amenity, environment and local economy of and for people living in, working in and visiting our borough. Action on littering, fly tipping, dog fouling, graffiti, urinating in the streets, spitting, vandalism, fly posting and abandoning vehicles will all be covered by a robust strategy. It will raise awareness and, where necessary, prescribe enforcement action. I am extremely grateful for community-minded individuals who give of their own time to help keep areas clean and tidy. And so it has also been decided to launch annual awards to recognise those who help us care for the environment.

Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year to you all. Cllr Peter Bedford

Everyone, it seems, has an opinion on how police resources should be used - this is nothing new

n days gone by, men would stand at the bar of their local pub, pint in hand, experts on every subject, putting the world to right. Nowadays, anonymous online commentators can comment on every news story that appears in the local and national media. There is some good healthy debate going on with strong opinions on what the police, local council and government should be doing. But if you really want to influence what your local police deal with, there is a simple way of telling us what to do. I am responsible for the Community Policing Teams that patrol the Borough of Boston. I am held to account for their performance by my managers at regular meetings, in the same way as a manager is held to account in any other organisation. What is different about policing is that we are also, quite rightly, held to account by our community. It is a well established fact that Lincolnshire is the lowest-funded police force in the country. We have less police officers now than at any time since the 1970s. It is therefore more vital than ever that all our resources are used to deal with the things that matter most to our communities, while still being readily available to deal with emergencies. Every area of Boston has a Community Policing Panel that meets on a regular basis. These are local panels, run by local people, not the police. You can apply to the chair of the panel to become a member or you can simply attend as a member of the public.

PCSO Marie Williams 07799 581739

10 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON

These panels set the policing priorities for their own area. Quite simply, they tell us what we should be dealing with in their village or their estate. This could be speeding vehicles, cyclists without lights, antisocial behavior outside a local shop or street-drinkers in Boston town centre. Objectives are set and the local police have to report back at the next meeting. Details of the panel dates for your area are available on our website www.lincs.police.uk and are also posted in local shops, post offices and libraries. At every panel meeting I go to, I am humbled by the community spirit and dedication of public-spirited citizens that actively take an interest in how we should police their community. Without donning a uniform or patrolling our streets, these people make a real difference to the policing of our community. This is Community Policing at its best. I would encourage our community to get involved this way and influence our activities in your area. Goodbye This will be my last input into Simply Boston. I am losing my uniform and moving on to pastures new as the Detective Inspector for the South Holland area. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Boston and for I believe that Boston is a great town. Inspector Jim Manning will be looking after Boston in the future and I am sure he will take the opportunity to introduce himself to you all in the next edition.

Advice

What is a Sale?

E

by John Willoughby

ither just before or straight after Christmas many stores have a sale; it is therefore worth reminding ourselves of our consumer rights of goods bought in a sale When you buy goods in a sale, you have the same rights as if you have bought non-sale goods. However, if the goods were reduced in price because of a fault the trader showed you, or if you’ve just changed your mind, you’re unlikely to be able to ask the trader to put things right. What is a sale? Many traders hold sales where you can buy goods at a discount from their usual price. Sales usually last for a limited time. The goods may be reduced in price because the trader needs to clear stock at the end of the season, because they want to attract customers, or because there are known faults with the goods. Your rights when you buy goods When you buy goods in a sale, you have the same rights as if you have bought non-sale goods. The law says that any item you buy from a trader must be: • of satisfactory quality • fit for purpose • match any description given. If it isn’t, you can usually get one of the following: • a repair • a replacement • your money back (a refund) • some of your money back (a partial refund). You may not have these rights if: • there is nothing wrong with the goods – you have just changed your mind about wanting them • the fault you want to complain about was brought to your attention before you bought the goods • the trader pointed out the defect that you now want to complain about you have damaged the goods yourself • the problem is the result of normal wear and tear • the goods have lasted for as long as could reasonably be expected.

If the goods were reduced because of a fault the trader showed you You can’t claim that an item you bought in the sale is faulty if it only has faults you were told about before you bought it. For example, if you buy a coat which has a label saying

there’s a hole in it, you can’t complain later about the hole. The same applies if you found a fault and asked for the price to be reduced because of it. However, if the item has another fault, apart from the one you were told about, you can still complain about it. For example, if you were told about the hole in the coat but the stitching in another part of the coat came apart, you would still be able to return it and ask for a repair, replacement or your money back. If you’ve just changed your mind A trader doesn’t have to give you a repair, replacement or refund if you’ve just changed your mind about goods you bought in a sale. However, some traders have their own returns policies which might offer you an exchange or a credit note if you’ve changed your mind about sale goods. You will often find details of these policies on the back of your receipt or displayed next to the tills. If you’ve changed your mind about goods you bought in a sale, it is worth asking the trader if they will let you return the goods anyway. If the trader says they won’t accept returns on sale items A trader can’t try to limit your rights when you buy goods in a sale. So, for example, if you see a sign saying ‘no returns on sale goods’ or ‘sold as seen’, this shouldn’t mean that you can’t return something which is faulty – unless you’d been told about the fault before buying it. If the sign does mean this, the trader may be committing an offence. You should report them to Trading Standards. If the item’s price has been reduced since you bought it Traders sometimes display signs in sales saying that if you return an item you’ll be refunded the most recent sale price. If you are returning something faulty you bought in a sale and it’s within a reasonable time, you should be refunded the full amount you paid. You may have to show the trader your receipt, or some other proof that you paid the amount you’re asking to be refunded. What does satisfactory quality mean? Goods are of satisfactory quality if they are of a standard a reasonable person would think was

satisfactory at the time of sale. This should take into account their price and anything else that seems to be relevant, for example, whether they’re second-hand. You can expect a new item to have a good appearance and finish. If it doesn’t, it’s probably not of satisfactory quality, even if it has no other faults. For example, a new car with scratches or a shop-soiled dress aren’t of satisfactory quality. Something with minor defects is probably not of satisfactory quality, even if the defects could be repaired. For example, a new shirt with buttons missing isn’t of satisfactory quality, even if you could replace the buttons. A china dish with a small chip also isn’t of satisfactory quality. Something which is unsafe isn’t of satisfactory quality. The Sale of Goods Act 1979 doesn’t say exactly how long goods should last. The general rule is that goods should last for a reasonable time and in reasonable condition. For example, a new car should last for several years in a reasonable condition but you may need to replace some of its parts over time. If goods don’t last as long as they should, they probably weren’t of satisfactory quality when you bought them. For example, if the sole on a shoe comes away after a few weeks of normal wear, this suggests that it was never of satisfactory quality. You may need an expert’s opinion on how long a particular item can normally be expected to last. What is meant by goods not fit for purpose? When you buy something, consumer law says the item must be fit for purpose. For example, a toaster must be able to make toast and a washing machine must be able to wash clothes. As well as being fit for their normal purpose goods must also be fit for any specific purpose that the seller told you they would be fit for. The law which gives you this right is called the Sale of Goods Act 1979. This right only applies when you buy something from a business, not from a private seller. The goods don’t match their description When you buy something, the Sale of Goods Act 1979 says the item must match its description. For example, if a jumper is described on a label as being 100 per cent wool it must be made only of wool. If you realise an item doesn’t match its description when you get it home or you receive it, you may have the right to return it to the seller and ask for a refund.

Farmhouse Breakfast Week 26 January - 1 February 2014 Farmhouse Breakfast Week is back to refresh your breakfast routine!

‘S

hake Up Your Wake Up!’ is this year’s challenge. We are all being encouraged to make small changes to our daily routine to encourage us to take the time to have a healthy breakfast. Farmhouse Breakfast Week first took place in 2000 and it has been going strong for the past 14 years, the campaign reminds people of how important it is to have a healthy breakfast. You’ve probably heard the saying “Breakfast like a King, lunch like a Prince and dine like a Pauper” time and time again, but the nutritionists say it’s true - breakfast is your most essential meal of the day. You’ll feel happier, more alert, and will maintain a healthy weight much more easily. If you think about it, skipping breakfast means your body has to function when it hasn’t been fed since dinner the day before! A car can’t run without fuel and neither can you. So how can you get involved? Well, depending on who you are, there are a range of activities for everyone. Schools, restaurants, farmers markets, retailers, the list goes on and on. If you’re not used to preparing breakfast, or still aren’t sure it’s worth the effort - why not check out the top tips for a healthy breakfast - try it for a week and see how you feel each day? You’ll soon get used to the routine and all its benefits!

Top tips for a healthy breakfast • Incorporate wholegrain foods Wholegrain foods include wholemeal bread, oats and wholegrain cereals. Wholegrain foods can help keep you feeling fuller for longer and studies have shown they may help lower the risk of certain types of cancer, type 2 diabetes and stroke. For more information about wholegrain foods visit www.wholegraingoodness.com

• Combine carbohydrates with protein

Combining a protein with a carbohydrate based

food such as bread, oats or cereal, provides you with invaluable nutrients for the day ahead. Ideal protein sources include milk, yogurt, nuts and lean meat such as bacon and sausages and fish such as kippers or salmon.

• Start your ‘5-a-day’

Breakfast is an ideal opportunity to start on your recommended ‘5-a-day’ of fruit and vegetables. A glass of fruit juice or a banana, berries or chopped apple with cereal or porridge is a good way to include some fruit. For a healthy dose of vegetable, try baked beans, tinned or fresh tomatoes or mushrooms with your toast

• Stay hydrated

As well as going without food overnight, your body has also gone without liquids, so to avoid dehydration it’s important to top up your levels. Dehydration can result in headaches, tiredness and feeling grumpy. People often mistake dehydration for hunger so you may overeat if you aren’t getting enough water. Start your day with a glass of water, fruit juice or herbal tea. Coffee and tea are also fine but are not as hydrating as other drinks due to their caffeine content.

• Build breakfast into your routine

If you struggle to eat first thing, take your breakfast with you and eat it on-the-go or at work. As long as you eat within the first couple of hours of your day you’ll still get the benefits of breakfast.

Focus on Swineshead

Swineshead

full of mystery and intrigue ❱ BY KATE CHAPMAN

A thriving village full of hustle and bustle, Swineshead has some interesting tales to tell

T

oday, with a population of around 3,000 people, it supports a raft of shops and amenities, including two pubs, a doctor’s surgery, chemist and farm shop as well as a number of clubs and sporting societies. There’s also art gallery Arts Coritani, luxury accommodation at Swineshead Hall and a village pond all nestling together on the edge of the Lincolnshire Fens. But its past events the village is most famous for. In 1216 Swineshead is said to have been the place where King John spent his final nights while making his way across The Wash. Legend has it the monarch had already lost his crown jewels in the sea somewhere near Sutton Bridge, and was staying at Swineshead Abbey when he was allegedly poisoned by one of the monks there. Swineshead St Mary’s Abbey was built by Robert de Gresli in around 1135 but was closed in 1536 under the Dissolution of the Monasteries ordered by Henry VIII, who was seeking to establish the Church of England. A farmhouse was built on the site of the monastic ruins in around 1607. Among the more notable names cropping up in the village’s history book is infamous cat burglar Robert Augustus Delaney, who lived there while married to a local woman. Delaney is credited with being the first such ‘light-fingered’ thief, and went out kitted with a length of black silk rope and a long slender tool to undo latches. Dressed in formal evening wear it’s said Delaney used his rope to scale wealthy homes and then sneak in before stealing whatever riches he could lay his hands on. He spent four years in jail from 1924 after being arrested by Scotland Yard, and was convicted again on multiple occasions. It’s said that on his first release from prison he returned to the village to rob wealthy businessman William Golding. However, he was caught within 24 hours and crowds of people mobbed Boston courthouse just to get a glimpse of him. Delaney’s life of crime has been recorded in a book by local historian Pamela Southworth. Other prominent people to hail from Swineshead include Herbert Ingram, the founder of the Illustrated

London News and MP for Boston. He was instrumental in bringing the railways and fresh piped water to the village, while his son went on to become a lord and the family was given the Ingram Baronetcy of Swineshead Abbey. More recently the village is sited as the former home of prize-winning novelist Gavin Extence, whose first book The Universe Versus Alex Woods was published last year. New year New YOU

Home is where the heart is ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

After the excesses of Christmas and New Year celebrations it’s time to get back to reality and consider our homes for 2014 by asking some important questions

A

re your finances in good shape and working as hard as they can for you? What can you do at home which will help the environment and your pocket? Are you happy where you are or is it time to upsize or downsize? With property being the largest single purchase that many of us will make, it is worth taking the time to protect that investment. If you don’t already have one, consider a budget planner to ensure your monthly outgoings stay under control. You can have two types of planner, one which covers short term goals, that is making your regular monthly payments and the cost of living, and one which covers long term goals such as debt repayment, savings or a retirement fund. The short term planner needs to take list regular payments such as your mortgage and bills, but also other costs incurred during the month such as food, petrol and entertainment. By keeping track of these as you go along you can ensure that you don’t overspend. For your long term planner you can either allocate a regular amount of money at the beginning of the month to put away or allocate what is left at the end of the month. Either way, having a planner will show you at a glance the money you have and what you need to put away to stay on track. Next, take a look at the environmental impact your home has. There are many ways you can help reduce this impact and at the same time see a reduction in your energy bills. Making sure your loft is properly insulated can save you over £100 a year as well as

“If you have decided a house move is on the cards then 2014 is a great time to get moving”

adding value to your property by improving its Energy Performance rating. Cavity wall insulation offers similar benefits. If you are lucky enough to have a good portion of your roof facing southwards then solar panels could represent a huge saving for you. As well as buying them outright there are a number of schemes enabling you to “rent” your roof space and benefit from free solar energy so you have not outlay. According to www.lovefoodhatewaste.com every year in the UK we throw away 7 tonnes of food. Worse than that, most of it could have been eaten. As well as being environmentally unsound it also costs us a whopping £12bn. On their website and via their app, Love Food Hate Waste is a great resource which not only helps you plan how to buy your food to avoid waste but also gives tasty recipes to use up the food you have left over. What a great way to reduce your grocery bill! If you have decided a house move is on the cards then 2014 is a great time to get moving. House prices have started to recover and demand is high. Interest rates are nice and low and lenders are eager to help. Start by making sure you have done your sums properly to ensure not only that you are looking at properties within your price bracket but also to avoid any problems along the way once you start the mortgage application process. Speaking to an independent mortgage adviser to explore your options before you begin searching for your new house is always a good place to start. Once you have made your initial decisions then it’s time to speak to an estate agent. Speaking to Hayley or Karen at Simply Property on 01775 640622 will ensure your house is on the market promptly and professionally and then your house hunting can begin in earnest. So whether it is keeping a tighter rein on your outgoings, doing something good for the environment or changing the scenery completely there is lots to do property wise in 2014! “...most resolutions will feel like you are somehow being deprived, remind yourself why you are doing what you are doing.”

ew Year’s Resolutions The New Year always starts with Resolutions, it’s as if January 1st brings with it an unavoidable taking stock of the previous year and thoughts of how you can improve over the coming 12 months. Make a list. What you have to do now is to 1) Lo follow it through. Make a start and stick to it. So that’s the s 2) St e weight an Which is often easier said than done… to-do list o d Begin by taking a really close look at the started! 3) D p Smoking get fit r goals you have set for yourself and check 4) Le ink less alc o that they are realistic and obtainable. When a 5) Ea rn someth hol making your resolutions it is easy to think t in 6) Sa more heal g new about how life would be in a perfect world th ve but if that’s what you end up striving for 7) Sta money ily y then you are going to make things very 8) Tra in touch w vel m hard for yourself. If, for example, you ore ith friends 9) B have included ‘learn Mandarin’ on and fa e mily 10) G less stress your list then it makes more sense to ed – w et mo change this to ‘enrol in a Mandarin or re org anised k/life balan class’ which will seem a much less ce daunting task! Equally, ‘lose 3 stone’ would sound more achievable if it read ‘join a local diet group and find an exercise class’. Once you are happy with your list then break it down into smaller goals which can be quickly achieved. If you are able to tick things off your list regularly then you are more likely to stick with it as you will be able to see Ask those around you to help. Many resolutions the results you are getting much more quickly than if involve large changes to lifestyle such as eating less, you tackled them as mammoth tasks. If ‘travel more’ is exercising more and giving up smoking. Knowing that at the top of your list then you could break it down by your family and friends are supporting you can give you firstly researching destinations, then deciding where the encouragement you need when you have been you would like to go, then finding out the cost, then going for a while and need an extra boost. It could be deciding how much you need to save and then booking the holiday. By breaking it down you will feel like you are something simple like asking them not to eat junk food around you, or coming out with you to walk the dog to making steady progress in the areas you have chosen. make sure you are getting some exercise. If taking up a new hobby is on the list then it is also important to get the support from your household as, if you are going to be away, routines will have to change and may even involve you being out in the evenings or weekends. It might be a good idea to choose some resolutions you can all work on together, you are far less likely to give up when you have been going for a while and you feel like you could do with a break. Once you stop you are very unlikely to start again so the more support you have around you the better. Finally, try and enjoy what you are doing! Although most resolutions will feel like you are somehow being deprived, remind yourself why you are doing what you are doing. You ultimately want to be healthier and happier and when you need motivation it a good place to start!

New year New YOU

Happiness & Wellbeing ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

I

So now January is here and the New Year’s Resolutions have kicked in...

t is fair to say that most of us put “lose a few pounds” and “exercise more” at the top of the list! So what are your options and where is the best place to start? There is the option to begin at home, by making small changes in your diet and beginning an exercise routine which fits around your daily life. By not making huge changes to your routine you are more likely to find any changes easier to stick to. For a start, make sure you eat breakfast every day. Study after study shows that by eating a good breakfast you are far less likely to snack during the day and have more energy than those who skip it. You can then take a look at what you eat and how you eat for your next step. If you drink full fat milk you could switch to semi-skimmed. Semi-skimmed milk not only has less calories and fat than full fat milk but it also contains more calcium, which has shown to be beneficial for weight loss. If you fry a lot of your food then switch to grilling as an easy way to cut the calories. Couple this with some form of exercise – walking the dog, leaving the car at home and walking to the shops instead or investing in a fitness DVD can get you well underway. If you don’t feel like going it alone then there are many local slimming clubs. In the local area you can find Rosemary Conley Diet and Fitness, Slimming World, Weight Watchers and the Cambridge Diet. Many of the local gyms and fitness centres are also offering “drop a dress size” style courses which combine diet advice with exercise. Use the local business search on the Simply Spalding website, www.simplyspalding.co.uk to find your local diet and fitness classes. And speaking of gyms and fitness centres, if you find that your exercise programme has finished before it started then joining a gym or attending a regular fitness

class can be the best way to ensure that you get regular exercise. And if you feel brave enough, classes like Yoga and Pilates can be as good for the mind as they are for the body. Moving to the fun part of a new you and thinking about how you might like to change the way you look. You’ve gone to a New Year’s Eve celebration and made the effort to look your most glamorous. So why not take the opportunity to think about your look for the year ahead and think about any changes you would like to make? It may be something as simple as wearing a splash of colour rather than black or a complete wardrobe makeover – out with the old and in with the new! And when you consider your appearance there is no need to stop at your clothing. Many people use their Christmas vouchers to give themselves a complete makeover. A brand new hairstyle with changes to colour, length and style and a make-up bag update to include up to date trends are a great way of spending your vouchers and Christmas money, not to mention the confidence boost you will get from all the compliments you will receive making you wish you had done it years ago! So however you decide to tackle those resolutions, good luck!

The British Heart Foundation have produced a “New Year, Fresh Start” pack which contains information covering areas such as eating well, get active and stay active, stop smoking and look after your heart. You can find this at www. bhf.org.uk

“If you don’t feel like going it alone then there are many local slimming clubs.”

Simply Hair Out with the old, in with a new you… By Rocco Tizzano IT IS AT THIS TIME OF YEAR when many ladies and gentlemen pursue an image overhaul. Vowing to reinvent ourselves with a new ‘do’, a fitness regime to make Mo Farrah wince and a long list of habits to banish forevermore. All of the above make us feel fabulous for the first few days or even weeks of the year. I have a huge amount of respect to those who fulfil their resolutions. One thing that we can be sure of lasting well into 2014 is a new hair design. Do not be afraid to take images of looks you like to your appointment. Sometimes visual aids are the best form of communicating and a hair salon is no exception. When choosing pictures look at the hair only, try blocking out the face with your finger and decide if you still like the hair. Better still, use a photo of just your face and place it onto the picture for a realistic idea. Factors you should consider when going for a restyle would be; 1) Lifestyle. How much time do you have? 2) Maintenance. A shorter style may require you to visit a salon more frequently to keep it in shape. 3) Product/Equipment. New styling and finishing products may be required 4) Face Shape. Almost all hairdressers will base your hair cut on your face shape. 5) Colour. A brand new hue can really enrich a cut. It is a great way to update an existing style without needing any length to be removed at all. If you find yourself in Oldrids and are thinking of a new style, please feel welcome to pop in to us on the second floor and have a chat with one of our professionals.

always seem to make the same ones anyway - to eat less cake and do more exercise and always fail miserably at both! But resolutions aside, there is a new beginning on the horizon for one member of the Chapman household in 2014. Prior to settling down to write this column, I completed the application to register Nancy for her place at primary school. Yes, come this September my little monkey will be packing her bag and heading off to ‘big’ school - all day, every day. Although she could easily pass for a four-year-old already - purely because she’s so tall and chatty - Nancy will be one of the youngest in the year. It doesn’t seem possible that she’s reached this milestone already - and I’m sure all the other parents who’ve been filling in the forms these last few weeks will be nodding their heads along in agreement. Surely it was only five minutes ago that we bought her home from hospital? She was such a tiny little bundle, weighing in at a teeny 5lb 12 ½ oz having arrived two

weeks early. I remember getting home, placing the car seat on the floor and wondering what on earth we were to do with her next. I hate to use clichés, but I’m going to anyway, time really has flown. It’s been truly wonderful watching her grow, both physically and into her own little person. And although it’s with some trepidation that the next chapter dawns, I’m also excited to see her go off and become even more independent. I don’t think I’ve got too much to worry about though, Nancy absolutely loves pre-school and all her new playmates. And she seems quite excited about the prospect of staying all day and taking her ‘lunch pack’ with her. To be honest, come that fateful day in September, I think there’ll only be one person crying at the school gate - and I’m pretty certain it won’t be Nancy.

Getting Away in

2014

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

We take a look at your options for travel over the next year

S

“You should always try and go through a travel agent who is retail independent, that way they have no financial ties with operators and so can give you impartial advice”

ince the beginning of the financial crisis, more people have been choosing domestic holidays, also known as “staycations” over overseas trips. The annual holiday used to mean a journey on a plane to somewhere hot with either very little to do or lots to see. Now there are a wider variety of choices as people are increasingly opting to stay within the UK and visit areas they have never seen. So what are the options for a staycation and what are the top foreign destinations for the coming year? Destinations in the UK are varied – from romantic weekends to city breaks and all out family adventure holidays there is something for everyone. Some people pack up the car and head to a self- catering cottage, others prefer camping or caravanning whilst others prefer to be in a hotel or bed and breakfast. How much you organise yourself depends on how confident you are of the accommodation in the area you are visiting as well as how much of an idea you have of what you want to do while you are there. One of the easiest ways to see the country is by coach. Day trip spending accounted for 44% of all tourism expenditure in the UK last year. But even if it is a longer trip you are after a coach may still be the answer. The Coach Tourism Council (CTC) gives plenty of reasons for travelling by coach. Firstly, they say, a trip is all inclusive so you don’t have to worry about spending on the extras. It will always represent good

30 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON

value for money, especially with fuel prices being as high as they are, it is not cheap to travel in your car around the country. Travelling in numbers also makes your trip environmentally friendly. Aside from that there is the personal service you receive from your driver and tour reps and then there is the comfort aspect. You can sit back and relax knowing that everything is taken care of and that you don’t have to do your share of the driving or the navigating to find places of interest! If you want to find out more about coach trips in the UK then visit www.findacoachholiday. com for more information. If you are thinking about travelling abroad then unless you are really familiar with the area you are travelling to it is a good idea to use a travel agent. For a start they are a one stop shop. Rather than trawling the internet to find out about potential destinations, a travel agent will have all of the information under one roof. If you are using an agent who is registered with ABTA (the Association of British Travel Agents) then you are covered in the event that something goes wrong, either with your holiday or with the agent themselves. A travel agent will also be able to help with excursions and itineraries if you want to see the sights while on holiday meaning you can head off on your holiday with everything sorted rather than having to do these things on arrival. Zane Ground, branch manager of Boston Travel says “You should always try and go through a travel agent who is retail independent, that way they have no financial ties with operators and so can give you impartial advice” and using established companies such as the co-op mean you can put your trust in them as not only are they well established but they are a member of ABTA and only use ATOL protected operators so your money could not be safer. And Zane’s top destination pick for 2014? “If you’re looking at the Med, then it’s got to be Turkey. The top city break has got to be New York and for an all-out holiday we are taking lots of bookings for China at the moment so that looks like the place to be”.

Family Life

Planning a party ❱ BY KATE CHAPMAN

Parties, whether it’s a Christening, child’s birthday or engagement celebration, are lots of fun, but they also involve lots of organising

F

rom finding a venue to sending out invites, organising entertainment and food the list is endless. Whatever type of gathering you’re having the first thing is decide your budget and how many guests you want - as this will determine some of the other arrangements. If you’re planning an intimate gathering, your home might be the perfect place to hold it, or if you’re intending to ask lots of friends, relatives and work colleagues you might consider hiring a venue. There are plenty of places across the area, like community halls, restaurants, pubs and sports clubs which hire our function rooms by the hour. Village halls are ideal for children’s parties - as there’s plenty of space for them to run around, without causing any damage. Once you’ve sorted your guest list and booked your venue, the next thing is to send out your invitations and RSVP date. When you know how many people are coming you can start arranging the catering and entertainment. Homemade buffet food is ideal for a children’s party – but if you’re expecting a large number you might want to think about hiring caterers. Who you choose will depend on whether you have a sit down meal, cold buffet, hog roast or barbecue. This will also depend on what time your party is. There are plenty of professional caterers and suppliers out there, and listed in local directories -

ask friends and relatives for their recommendations too. And don’t forget the cake if you’re holding a celebration party. Why not make it yourself – the fact you’ve gone to loads of effort will make it all the more special. If you’re skills aren’t quite up to it, there are plenty of professionals waiting to take the job on. Now the food’s taken care of, don’t forget to the drink to accompany it. If you’re planning a celebration at home or you need to supply your own, wholesalers offer sale or return deals on wine, beer and spirits. That just leaves decorations and entertainment. Balloons and streamers always go down with kids, but if your party is for grown ups there are florists on hand to help with table decorations and more unusual centrepieces. When it comes to entertainment, you might find a few CDs will suffice. Entertainers and bouncy castles don’t come cheap but are a great way of keeping children amused - although a few games like musical statues and pass the parcel can be a cheaper alternative and just as much fun. A disco or karaoke might be more up your street, or maybe if your budget allows you could hire a band or performer. Whatever decisions you make, don’t get too stressed by it all - make a list to keep track of what’s been organised and the costs – and then, remember to enjoy your party!

Home & property

To move or improve? ❱ BY KATE CHAPMAN

F

January and the advent of a brand new year is always the ideal time to take stock of various aspects of our lives

or many of us our living accommodation is often top of the list. If you’re starting to feel that you’ve outgrown your home and there simply isn’t enough room, the new year could be the ideal time to consider taking the next step on the property ladder. Whether it’s more living space, a bigger garden, or you simply want a change of location, moving isn’t a decision that should be entered into lightly. After all it can be a costly business, with conveyancing and estate agency fees to pay along with stamp duty tax as well as house contents removal costs. You’ve also got to find a buyer for your own property – one who will pay a high enough price that enables you to move on. Perhaps improving your home rather than selling up could be the way to go – it’s certainly cheaper to make new space rather than buy it. There are lots of ways to go about improving your property so that it meets the needs of your growing family and their demands. You could also consider redecorating – using light colours on your walls will open up your rooms, or alternatively you could replace and update your kitchen and bathroom.

THE FOLLOWING ARE GREAT WAYS OF CREATING MORE SPACE • Loft Conversion A loft is often the largest untapped space in the home. Converting it is a simple way of creating a new room, which could be used as an extra bedroom, office or playroom. It will add value you to your property too, should you decide to sell up in the future. • Extension Extending your property is another way of increasing your living space. You could add a one or two-storey extension depending on your requirements. This option will not only be cheaper than moving it will also add value to your property and leave you feeling like

you’re living in a new home. • Folding doors Another way of increasing space or the feel of your rooms is by replacing walls with folding doors, which will open rooms up and make them appear larger. • Conservatory You could create another room / more living space by the addition of a conservatory. There’s no need to get planning permission and one of the real advantages of a conservatory over any other type of extension is that they let in light and warmth, while at the same time providing shelter from the elements. A conservatory will also add value to your home.

Motoring

New

Honda Civic 1.6 i-DTEC SE 5dr WITH THE exception of the high performance Type R model, the Honda Civic used to have a rather run-of-the-mill image. But the 2005 incarnation was radical and sexy enough to change that perception

N

ow the car has gone ‘under the knife’ to achieve an even tighter, sharper appearance. The result is an aesthetically pleasing, sporty motor that drives almost as brilliantly as it looks. Inside, the fresh Civic has a more athletic cockpit layout, a redesigned small and chunky steering wheel, as well as cool, blue door lining illumination. The car’s lightweight six speed manual gearbox is slicker than ever, and the gear ratios have been optimised to give higher speed refinement and a more satisfying action. In fact, Honda’s 2012 Civic has moved general driving pleasure up a whole notch. The steering is more direct, thanks to a retuned electric power steering system, and cornering is more precise because of stiffer suspension. This hasn’t affected comfort though. Far from it; the car has improved refinement and a good, stable ride – especially at motorway speeds. Fuel economy is seriously impressive with the 1.6 diesel powered Civic. It returns an average of 78.5 mpg and emits just 94 g/km of CO2. For maximum efficiency you can choose to press the green ECON switch on the dashboard. This clever device ensures a very smooth increase in torque (turning power) for a more relaxing drive and less fuel consumption. But

“The Civic is generally aimed at the family market so, as you would imagine, space is no issue - especially with Honda’s ‘Magic Seat’ system.” 44 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON

of course an engine is at its cleanest when it’s not running at all - that’s why idle stop technology is also fitted. Honda makes cash-saving driving fun too - the Civic’s speedometer illumination changes, depending on how hard your right foot is down, or how long you hang on to the gears. The lighting is blue when the car is idle and stays blue during sudden acceleration and deceleration. It turns to green if you drive it in an economical manner but, in between, blue-green lighting shows during gentle blips of the throttle. The Civic is generally aimed at the family market so, as you would imagine, space is no issue - especially with Honda’s ‘Magic Seat’ system. Flip up, fold down or recline - you can transform the cabin at the lift of a lever or the push of a button. For example, the rear seats can be folded down completely to give a flat load space which is large enough to carry three mountain bikes, three large cases or three big golf bags. This is possible even with the front seats in their rearmost position. In SE trim the Civic is a very pleasurable place to be ensconced - particularly if, like me, you spend long periods on the road. Equipment includes electric windows and mirrors, as well as climate control. The up-to-the-minute Civic is indeed a top motor. Made by a company with a legendary reputation for bullet-proof reliability and comfort, the hatchback, although not the quickest in its class, is one of the best looking. And, on top of that, the car is built in Britain alongside its popular siblings, the CR-V and Jazz. You’ll just have to find nearly £20,000 – or wait for the new Civic to come on to the used market.
