Happy New Year! Here we are, another New Year. January is associated with fresh starts, new challenges and learning from the past 12 months. I am looking forward to 2015 as we have an exciting year ahead. We are still in the process of making changes to our new home and this will continue, I’m sure well into the year. January for me is always a quiet month and recovering from all the excitement of Christmas and I’m sure this year will be no different. So all that remains for me to say is a very Happy New Year from all at Simply Spalding.

A Happy New Year to you all! I hope you had a fantastic Christmas and are looking forward to the year ahead. As with the start to every new year most of us have our New Year’s Resolutions in the backs of our minds and some of us are ready and raring to go whilst others know what needs to be done but are more than a little reluctant to start! We prefer to think of is as a “New You” and as such we have taken a look at the “Top 2” from the resolution list, diet and exercise. Elsewhere we assess our finances and consider the best breakfast! Whatever you decide to do, may 2015 be your best year yet! Enjoy the issue.

Fraud cash boost
Boston Borough Council has been chosen by the Government for a share of £16 million to fight fraud. The cash injection has been made by the Department for Communities and Local Government to councils “who are raising their game through a range of innovative and sustainable projects to tackle fraud”. Boston Borough Council submitted its joint bid with East Lindsey District Council and South Holland District Council to wage war on business rates evasion. Its East Coast Business Rates Assurance Function was singled out for special mention by the DCLG and receives £125,820. It said the joint Lincolnshire councils’ project would tackle business rates fraud so law-abiding firms do not have to compete unfairly against those who fail to pay their way; shared business rates assurance managers Andy Hall and Mike Carr will work with the Valuation Office Agency to expose companies breaking the law and
maximise the business rates collected by the authorities. Communities Minister Lord Ahmad announced extra funding for council-led projects to claw back billions of pounds of taxpayers’ money lost every year to fraud. Local government loses £2 billion every year to fraud. Cllr Aaron Spencer, Boston Borough Council’s finance portfolio holder, said: “We are determined to tackle fraud of all types and have recently had success with prosecutions, bringing to book those who cheat the system and honest hard-working people out of the money they pay in taxes. “Our efforts have been recognised at the highest level and the extra funding will enable us to be even more diligent and effective. Anyone who cheats the system, or is thinking about it, be warned – modern and sophisticated methods, together with data-sharing, means there really is no hiding place.”
Experienced Lincolnshire Drivers offered chance to boost their driving confidence In 2015 The Lincolnshire Road Safety Partnership is taking the bespoke Mature Drivers Programme countywide. Mayflower 400 Boston is to play its part in the 400th anniversary of the departure on the Mayflower of pilgrims for the New World. Pilgrims from Boston, escaping from religious persecution, were also among the first to colonise America, famously laying down roots in an area of Massachusetts that was to also be named Boston. The Boston Men, who were instrumental in the foundation of modernday America, were pioneers, along with the pilgrims who sailed from Plymouth on the Mayflower to set up the community in America also named Plymouth. The two communities are just 40 miles apart. On November 21, 1620, the settlers signed the original Mayflower Compact, pledging to follow the order of a civil “Body Politick” and obey laws for the good of the colony. This compact became the basis for the American Constitution. Boston became a signatory to a new Mayflower Compact in Plymouth, England, on Friday, November 21, by all partners to be involved in the Mayflower 400 celebration in 2020. Boston Mayor, Cllr Alison Austin signed the Compact. Pilgrims aiming to leave England from Scotia Creek, near Fishtoft, in 1607 were arrested and marched to the Guildhall where the men were locked in the cells. This was the first documented bid to escape religious persecution.
One of their leaders, William Bradford, recorded in his memoirs that they were treated considerately while in Boston. They eventually left the country, initially for Holland before returning to England when many joined others on the Mayflower bound for America. The transcription of the original Mayflower Compact is taken from Bradford’s journal “Of Plimoth Plantation”. More from Boston made their way to America in 1630, 1633 and 1634. The socalled “Boston Men” played important roles in the establishment and development of
the City Of Boston. Among other things they founded the Boston Free Latin School, modelled on the Boston Grammar School they had left behind. This was the foundation of state education in America. The modern Compact will see “pilgrim” communities including, among others, Boston, Plymouth, Gainsborough, Immingham, Doncaster, Harwich, Dartmouth and Southampton, commit, together with those in America and the Netherlands, to work in partnership toward a joint commemoration of the sailing of the Mayflower in 1620.
Local Link Recruitment offer CV assistance If you are thinking about changing job or even embarking on a new career altogether, now is a great time to start preparing your job hunt campaign ahead of the spring hiring season. Candidates for desirable job roles in the current market are likely to face some keen competition so local firm Local Link Recruitment are offering free CV clinics to ensure you are in the best position to secure an interview. Local Link offer the following advice: “Firstly, and most importantly, adapt and tailor your CV every time you apply for a job. I know that sounds like a lot of work, but the payoff will be enormous. Use the job advertisement, or the job description if you have one. Circle the key words within it 6 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON
– these will signpost you towards what this company is looking for. Then, ensure that your CV strongly highlights the areas of your experience most relevant to the job role. For example, if the advertisement talks about sales and customer relations, make sure your CV talks about these too. Make it easy for the recruiter to see that you are a good fit for their position, without having to trawl through to page three of your CV to find out. You can use your personal statement at the top of your CV, if you have one, or the covering letter you send- and you should always send one – to reinforce this message”. Street drinking illegal from January 12 Drinking alcohol in the street in Boston town centre is to become illegal on January 12. Boston Borough Council is among the first in the country to introduce new legislation declaring the town centre a drink-free area. The decision follows two rounds of public consultation which revealed overwhelming support for introduction of the new public space protection order. Anyone found drinking alcohol in the designated area (see map) will be subject to arrest if, when requested by a police officer, they do not stop drinking or surrender the drink. Under the new rules any person failing to stop drinking when requested will be committing an offence and can be arrested and fined - £100 for a first offence and up to £500 for a second offence committed within six months of the first. Councillors heard that, despite the Lincolnshire Chief Constable’s concerns reported about future cuts and funding for the force, he had supported the new street drinking controls proposed for Boston and given an undertaking that they could be policed. Cllr Stephen Woodliffe, portfolio holder for community safety, said the proposal also had the support of Lincolnshire’s Police and Crime Commissioner. Cllr Woodliffe said he had seen men drinking alcohol at 10.30am, that day, sitting on the base of the Five Lamps. They had
been noisy and they were spitting. There were calls for the order to cover other areas of the borough but Cllr Woodliffe said the police had said they could enforce it in the town area but would not have the manpower to cover other areas. He said: “I would like to see it across the borough – across the nation – but we cannot bring something in that the police cannot deliver. But it is a start to sort out the town centre.” Council leader, Cllr Peter Bedford, said: “This one of the best good news stories we have had for a while.”
Cadet award to PC There was a surprise for Boston’s bestknown policeman when he attended the police cadets’ annual awards evening. PC Martyn Chambers was awarded a cadets merit badge by the cadets themselves. A career policeman coming up to retirement he has a long-standing association with the Boston Volunteer Police Cadets. The awards event at Boston Borough Council’s Municipal Buildings was attended by Boston Mayor, Cllr Alison Austin, Chief Supt Paula Woods, Lincolnshire Police and Crime Commissioner Alan Hardwick and the Lord Lieutenant of Lincolnshire Tony Worth.

Modernisation of Boston Bus Station has seen much needed improvement work recently completed. Contractors removed old bus shelters and installed two new ones. The first was installed at the end bay nearest to Acorn Taxis office in Bond Street. The other new shelter was installed at the opposite end of the bus station. Work included the installation of concrete bases for the two new bus shelters, lowering kerbs, adjusting the gradient of the blockwork ramps and introducing tactile paving. Eight new bus bays have also been constructed. Work included lowering kerbs, adjusting gradients of the blockwork ramps, introducing tactile paving and the removal of the existing bus shelters. A buff-coloured pedestrian walkway will also run the length of the bus station and will be laid following completion of the other works. This work can only be carried out when suitable weather conditions allow therefore it is possible that this will not be done until February or March. This work will necessitate the bus station being closed for a day. Discussions will take place with the bus operators nearer the time regarding the closure. Other works, including replacement signage and the painting of street furniture, will take place at various stages of the project. SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk |

If you would like to contact Peter with a specific question, please email info@simplyboston.co.uk
Each issue Peter Bedford, leader of Boston Borough Council, discusses the important topics in and around Boston New Year messages are traditionally upbeat and filled with hope for the fresh year ahead. But it would be remiss of me to look ahead without pausing to reflect on what was probably the worst year in Boston’s history. I refer, of course, to the great flood which, although it happened towards the end of 2013, left an impact felt by many throughout 2014. 2014 was a long, hard-fought year. It began with an end - the end of the massive clean-up necessary after the devastating flood of December 5. That wasn’t the end of the evidence of the flood or the end of the impact of the flood. For many the misery has gone on for most of 2014, and involvement for the council has seen out the year and continues into 2015. However, the worst is now behind us and we are all much better prepared should the now alltoo-easily imaginable ever happen again. The council made its case for extra special treatment and received the biggest cash award from the Government’s flood relief funding pot. As a result, those with flood-affected properties were able to take advantage of council tax relief, business rate relief, help to offset the worst effects of flood damage to their businesses and opportunity to improve the flood resilience of their properties. One of the positives to be fully demonstrated in the past 12 months was the resilience of the community of Boston. Alone it bonded into a vital force for good, determined to get Boston back on its feet. Volunteers of all persuasions came to the fore, determined to help those less fortunate than themselves. Happily we
are now emerging from under the black cloud cast by the flood. The end of this dark chapter in our town was marked with a small event of thanks at which the Mayor, the Chief Constable and others in positions of authority paid rightful homage to the efforts of so many. We enjoyed successful Christmas celebrations, with the biggest Christmas tree the town has ever had, putting behind us the rather dampened spirit of the Christmas before. The town has rallied, with shop vacancy rates better than most and footfall in the town centre at a four-year high. The council, in its most difficult year with not just the aftershocks of the flood but also the continuing effects of the national recession and grim austerity measures, has done more with less. It found ways to save money by sharing some vital frontline services, such as refuse collection, and by making the most of its own assets, such as moving its environmental services from a rented site to one it owns. Efforts in other areas have seen success - improved facilities at the Geoff Moulder Leisure Complex seeing increases in swim and gym attendances and recognition for improvements in the environment with a silver gilt award in the in-bloom competition. No one is pretending that there are not still difficult times ahead, but they will be met in 2015 with the same energy as those in 2014 were met. There is a terrible cliche which says what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. Nobody died, and we are stronger, fitter, leaner and ready to take whatever 2015 may throw at us. Peter.
“...what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. Nobody died, and we are stronger, fitter, leaner and ready to take whatever 2015 may throw at us.”

School news
Calling teachers, PTA members, pupils… Do you have exciting news at your school? If you would like to share your school news please send details to editor@simplyboston.co.uk
Thomas Cowley High School In October, Thomas Cowley High School had cause for two celebrations. Not only was a brand new classroom opened, but we were also able to invite Simon Lilley, our new Head of Governors, to do the honours. Head Teacher, Martyn Taylor, explained the need for the extra, state of the art Maths classroom. ‘Our own master builder, Mr Dave Cox, has done a terrific job in creating this new classroom. He has done it in such a way as it blends in to its surroundings whilst at the same time enhancing them. We have the largest school population in the long and distinguished history of the school and it is good to be able to give them more teaching space. I am looking forward to working with Mr Lilley – our new chair of governors. I have already been impressed by the interest that he has shown in our day to day work and I am confident that he will help us to move the school forward’. Mr Lilley has been on the school’s board of
Governors for 18 months and was delighted to be recently made Chair. Speaking at the opening of the classroom Mr Lilley said ‘It is a privilege to have been elected to the role of Chair of Governors and an honour to have been invited to open the new classroom. I am very much looking forward to working with the staff and students of Thomas Cowley.’ Elsewhere, an annual careers fair was greeted with enthusiasm by both exhibitors and students on Wednesday 15th October. The fair enabled years 11, 10 and 9 students to speak to different education and work based providers to ask questions about future educational plans and jobs. With many different providers attending including; Boston High School, Boston College, Boston Work - based Learning, Stamford College, Spalding Grammar School, South Holland Post 16 Centre, CITB, First4Skills ( apprentiships ), Lincolnshire Co-op, NHS and many others, there really was something for everyone.
Bicker Preparatory School On Friday 21st November we welcomed Mr Mark Simmonds into school to talk to years 3, 4, 5 and 6. Two year 6 pupils met Mr Simmonds at the school door and escorted him in to assembly. The children have been learning about democracy, the role of the parish council and the Houses of Parliament. In particular, we have looked at the role of the MP and investigated the websites of the MP’s for Boston, Spalding and Sleaford. Mr Simmonds explained that he serves 91 villages plus the towns of Boston and Skegness. On a normal week he is in London from Monday to Thursday and then works in the constituency each Friday and Saturday morning. The children had prepared questions to ask concerning the areas in which they live. One child was able to thank Mr Simmonds for help with a recent problem in their village. We discussed areas for improvement in the Boston area for the future also. Mrs Sheila Page our Principal then thanked Mr Simmonds for his time and gave him a tour of the school. Wendy Bell (Head of Upper School) says: “We are most grateful to Mr Simmonds for giving up his time to visit us. He spoke in detail about his work and the area in which we all live. Our children do follow the local news with interest and had many questions to ask about issues affecting their villages and towns”. 10 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON
Returning former student Luke Cowdell came to tell current students what life was like at Spalding Grammar where he is now studying for his A levels in Law, History, Maths and Phycology. He offered the following piece of advice for our current students; ‘Make sure that you have a back-up plan for your choice of career. That way if things don’t go as you had hoped then you’ve still got options open to you.’
Staniland Academy
Staniland Academy supported the annual Children In Need Appeal with a non-uniform day and cake selling. Children dressed as their “Hero” which included well known Super Heroes such as Captain America and Spiderman. Some children chose other sporting role models such as Bradley Wiggins. Year 3 staff entered into the spirit of things by dressing as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Our annual Cake selling was another HUGE success. Over 400 plates of cakes were sold in 15 minutes which was a great effort and the overall total raised was £740 During our special assembly in the morning the children were surprised by a special visitor – Pudsey Bear!

The unseen element of community policing
It is often the case that when members of the public are asked questions around what they expect of their police force?
T
he reply is usually around a visible representation within the community. Clearly this is always at the forefront of our minds so I thought I would take the opportunity to offer an insight into some of the other work that the police engage in that is often unseen, particularly within the community. The visible representation is extremely important in terms of our unseen elements, but what exactly are we doing when we are seen making various notes, and speaking to individuals on the street? The information that is obtained on the street is often used to build the police intelligence picture with regard to on-going issues and crimes that occur. It also assists the police in trying to adopt a forward facing approach in dealing with what can be described as seasonal offences. We collate and utilise this information in an attempt to safeguard our communities. This can be anything from a welfare check incorporating a knock on the door, to a fully-fledged operation utilising force-wide resources. The information we obtain from members of the public is crucial in terms of our

With that in mind I would make a request with regard to the seasonal timing, but firstly pose a couple of questions…… If you were to witness a crime in action what would you do? Most individuals would report the matter. But what if you were aware of an individual who was the subject of domestic abuse, or poor living conditions? Would you report the matter? Did you know that you can report matters of this nature to the police, and we will seek to build an intelligence picture on those cases too? These offences do attract a great deal of scrutiny and we will seek to act on any information provided. My request is that as we move through the festive period, if you have concerns about individuals then please report it.

What are your New Year’s resolutions? ❱ BY STUART HELLON Lose weight? Healthier eating? Quit smoking? These usually rank high on the ‘New Year, new me’ agendas but as well as your usual promises, why not try taking up something different in the New Year? What about volunteering?
Why should I volunteer? Volunteering for charities such as Boston Citizens Advice Bureau attracts people from all walks of life and it is easy to see why. • Fill the gaps on your work experience/ curriculum vitae • Gain creditable references from a nationally recognised organisation • Gain experience of working within the workplace • Learn new skills and develop existing ones • Meet new people • Keep yourself active and energised • Help others • Work within a friendly team
•
Fundraising: helping brainstorm and put into action fundraising ideas to help boost our charity fund.
What skills do I need? We do not have entry criteria; just be flexible, adaptable, willing to learn and embrace our core principles is all we ask. If volunteering for an organisation that values diversity, promotes equality and challenges discrimination sounds fair to you then volunteering with us might just prove to be your best New Year’s resolution yet!
What can I get out of volunteering? Volunteering itself can be incredibly rewarding; however volunteering with the Citizens Advice Bureau can mean so much more. You will be making a proactive difference in your community, helping provide a lifeline for those in crisis. You might not even know it but you will also be contributing to the bigger picture by
helping us campaign for social policy change to ensure that procedural injustices do not happen again. So whether you’re looking to return to work or simply want to do something rewarding in your spare time come and see what volunteering with us is really like; we may just surprise you!
How do I find out more? There are many ways to get more information about volunteering with us. • Come in and see us! We’re at Chantry House, Lincoln Lane, Boston, PE21 8RU • Phone us on 01205 318645. Ask for Louise Wells or Alison Parry who will be happy to help you with any queries. • Our website, www.citizensadvice. org.uk and search for volunteering opportunities available in Boston • Visit our social media pages. Facebook: www.facebook.com/BostonCAB or Twitter: @BostonCAB1
What volunteering roles are available for me? Don’t be fooled by the “advice” name above the door; we have many volunteering opportunities that do not directly give advice and are equally essential. Every volunteer regardless of their role is vital in ensuring that the bureau is able to continue to deliver its services for our Boston community. As well as advice we have opportunities in; • Reception: ensuring a friendly and professional welcome, delivering excellent customer service and helping with everyday queries • Information assistant: helping people find their own answers by using existing information, i.e. Adviceguide

Adult choice More Fool Me by Stephen Fry Having really enjoyed Stephen Fry’s previous two memoirs, we were looking forward to reading this, the next chapter in his extraordinary life and career. Stephen writes with candour and his usual self-deprecation about his rise to fame in the entertainment industry, including his recently much publicised use of illegal substances back in the 1990s. Sadly, this takes up most of the memoir. Where, how often, who with… which soon became
Children’s choice Tinker Bell and the Secret of the Wings Disney DVD Disney magic returns in this animated story about Tinker Bell, the mischievous fairy who ventures into the Winter Woods and discovers more than she ever imagined; a sister. Together they save Pixie Hollow and the Pixie Dust Tree from the grip of winter and the new found friendship of
a bit repetitive. There are a few recollections that raise a smile, however. A particularly sweet one is Prince Charles and Diana paying Stephen a visit one Christmas, due to the fact they were neighbours in Norfolk (Stephen lived near to Sandringham). Over all, a somewhat interesting read if you’re a fan, however, be prepared to skip ahead when you reach yet another anecdote about the Groucho Club. the two sisters helps to reunite the fairies of Pixie Hollow and the Winter Woods. I borrowed this DVD to keep my three young granddaughters amused and it certainly did that. They loved the story and the wonderful animation, particularly when the ice starts to cover Pixie Hollow. An ideal DVD to keep young fairy lovers amused on a cold January day.

New Year New You
Weight Management Top of most people’s New Year’s Resolutions is to lose a little (or a lot) of weight. Rather than go it alone, take advantage of these resources available to help you succeed ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
There are not many people out there who don’t indulge a little over Christmas. But when all the celebrations are over and the new year begins we sit and make a list of resolutions which we fully intend to have ticked off by the end of the year. They range from small lifestyle changes to enormous tasks (who has ever put “learn a new language” on the list? Be honest…). Sitting at the top of the list is almost always “lose weight”, “get healthier” or “exercise more”. The three of these are in many ways interconnected, and all are good for you so where do you start? A healthy diet combined with regular exercise is what we all aim for. If you don’t know where to start with your diet there are many local groups and slimming clubs who are able to help. One of the most recognised of these is Slimming World. Their generous eating plan makes slimming easier than you ever thought possible! Instead of telling you what you can and can’t eat, Food Optimising puts you in control. And this, combined with their tried and tested weight loss support system, really is a recipe for success! Slimming World’s support – online and in group – is based on a deep understanding of how you feel and a passionate desire to help you achieve your personal weight loss goals – and maintain them for life! Their Free Food list includes masses of food that you can eat in unlimited amounts. No food is banned! Enjoy your favourite treats every day and still lose weight. Another very popular weight loss system is Weight Watchers. With 50 years of success behind them they understand how to make losing weight simple, delicious and fun; You can follow their healthy eating plan completely online or benefit attend their lively meetings, for personal coaching and weight loss guidance.
No food is off limits with Weight Watchers ProPoints weight loss system. You can enjoy every day favourites like pasta and jacket potatoes, plus yummy fruits and tasty vegetables. You are also encouraged to still eat your favourite treats, like cheese and chocolate, but they promise to show you how to do this while losing weight at the same time! A diet which is growing in popularity is the Cambridge Weight Plan, which provides flexible weight management programmes for men and women. Their delicious soups, shakes, bars, vanilla rice pudding and porridge can be used as the sole source of nutrition or can be combined with conventional food for more gradual weight loss and weight management. Their nutritionally balanced programmes range from 440kcal to 1500+kcal per day. Unlike group meetings they offer friendly one-to-one support with programmes that are flexible, convenient and easy to use. Your Cambridge Consultant will motivate and encourage you throughout your weight loss journey and once you reach your target, they’ll be there to help you maintain your fantastic new look! If you are worried about your weight then before you start on any weight loss plan make sure you consult your GP. At your visit your GP or practice nurse will be able to assess whether your current weight is healthy or not. This means measuring your weight and height to calculate your body mass index (BMI).
Your BMI indicates whether you are a healthy weight for someone of your height. A healthy BMI for adults is between 18.5 and 24.9. A BMI of 25 or above means that you’re overweight. Once they know your BMI they will be able to recommend a course of action for you, using weight loss and exercise.

Maintain that healthy glow Make sure your healthy summer glow doesn’t get away from you this winter – reach for that bottle of fake tan!
“Once you’ve arrived on the right product in the right colour it is time to prepare your skin. Exfoliation here is key.”
S
❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
adly we don’t live in a country where it is possible to maintain a sun tan all year round but there is a way to cheat to ensure you are looking bronzed all the time – fake tan. Whilst it can be tricky to apply the first few times, with regular practice you can become a pro! And if all else fails, head to your nearest qualified beautician who can give you a nice even spray tan! So where to start? Well, you need to select your self-tan product. They are not all created equal! There are gradual tanners which build up over time to give you the exact colour you want and there are instant tanners which stain the skin and must be more carefully applied. Self-tan also comes in many forms – creams, gels, sprays, mousses, liquids and even wipes! You will also need to select a colour that is right for you. Colours range from fair to dark. A good rule of thumb is to apply lighter than you think you need and then go darker if you need to as it doesn’t work the other way round! Unless you are using a spray or wipe consider investing in a tanning mitt which allows you to spread the tan across your body more evenly, thus avoiding the dreaded streaky look! Once you’ve arrived on the right product in the right colour it is time to prepare your skin. Exfoliation here is key. As well as shaving or waxing your legs (and arms if you have thick hair on them) you will need to exfoliate everywhere where tan is likely to go. Pay special attention to areas of skin which may be rough such as knees and elbows. Any areas of dry skin should be moisturised to avoid patchy areas of tan. Using your tanning mitt, apply your fake tan using circular motions. Start with your legs and work your way up to make sure that you have covered every part of yourself. Make sure you blend carefully around your
20 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON
ankles and wrists so the colour doesn’t suddenly stop! If you get fake tan on your hands make sure you wash them well as tanned palms don’t look particularly natural!! Leave your face and neck until last as they tan the easiest and so the tan needs the least amount of time to develop. Follow the directions carefully (and remember each product will be different so don’t rely on information from the past) when it comes to how long to leave the fake tan on. If possible don’t wear any clothing while the tan is developing as it can leave you with tan lines. When your time is up simply shower it off, remembering to pat yourself down afterwards as you have to be careful in the early hours that you don’t smudge your colour. To make your tan last longer make sure you don’t exfoliate and use plenty of moisturiser to keep your skin in good condition.

Activities for the over 50s Ever thought of trying something different, becoming more active and socialising? At the Geoff Moulder Leisure Complex we have various activities specifically aimed at those who are a little older. It is recommended that we all take regular exercise to keep fit and healthy. This doesn’t mean sweating it out in a gym for hours on end. Simply becoming more active on a regular basis helps to keep muscles and joints supple and your body in good working order and helps to keep the mind active too. We have several group fitness classes a week which are instructor led to ensure exercise movements are correct and safe. The classes are also light-hearted, motivational and fun. Before and after the class, participants can sit and have a complimentary drink and a chat in our gym reception area.

New Year New You
Time For Some Exercise January is a great time to start improving your fitness. The NHS recommend we take 150 minutes of exercise a week so where do you start?
W
hether you choose to take advantage of long winter walks, grab a fitness DVD or go the whole hog and join your local gym the key is to not try and do too much, too fast. If you set your targets too high then you may find yourself demotivated when you are unable to keep up your self-imposed gruelling schedule. Whilst it is good to have an overall goal in mind, see if you can divide it down into smaller goals so you will be able to see results faster and so feel the benefits sooner. Everyone is different when it comes to exercise. Some people prefer to have a workout first thing in the morning, others enjoy fitness classes after work. Many people like to exercise with a friend so it is worth having a conversation with your friends to see if you have any regular free time when you can meet up and exercise. As well as the company, your friends can help to motivate you when you really don’t feel like pulling on your exercise gear and leaving your house! Why not integrate exercise with starting a new hobby? There are many local sporting groups who are always looking for new members and they range from gentle exercise such as indoor bowls to more energetic pursuits such as cycling and squash. If you are enjoying your hobby and the exercise comes as a by-product then much the better! We are lucky to have a good selection of gyms in the area. January is a good month to join as not only will you usually find a good joining offer during this month but there are lots of others who are starting at the same time as you so you have some common ground. There are many benefits to joining a gym. Firstly there is more equipment and weights there than would ever be able to fit into your own home! The wide variety enables you to work out different
❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
parts of your body and it stops your workout from becoming repetitive and boring. Another big benefit is that you will have access to fitness specialists who will be able to tailor your workout to help you achieve your goals. Some people start exercising to be fit, some to lose weight, some to change their shape. These all require different types of workout to achieve. Unless you know what each machine can offer you then it is best to get help and advice from those who do know. You can also pay for a personal trainer to get you started and to make sure you are doing the exercises in the right way to get the most benefit from them. Gym membership often comes with regular assessment so that when your fitness levels improve you can alter your workout to reflect this. A quick glance at the What’s On section at the back of the magazine shows the range of fitness classes available. From good old-fashioned Keep Fit classes to newer disciplines such as Zumba you will find classes for all ages and abilities. As well as being fun you have access to a qualified instructor who will make sure that you are exercising correctly and so avoid any injuries – there’s nothing like a pulled muscle to stop a new routine before it can get established! If nothing else, you can take advantage of the cold winter weather and wrap up warm before heading out for a long afternoon walk. It all counts as exercise and walking off a Sunday lunch will be better for you than an afternoon nap! For more information on getting your weekly exercise for low or no cost visit www.nhs. uk/livewell/fitness.

Finance Health Check
Keeping your Finances in Check The Christmas break is a great time to sit down and assess your financial situation. As well as making sure you are doing everything right, you could even save yourself some money ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
“...if you have not made a Will then your possessions may not be distributed as you would have wished. If you have a partner but are not married then they do not automatically inherit from you...”
W
e all know the basic formula to staying on top of your finances – your outgoings need to be less than your incomings. Once you’ve got that sorted however, what can you do to make sure you are in the best shape financially and what can you do to protect your assets in the future. Even if you feel you have everything you need it is a good idea to regularly shop around to make sure you are receiving the best deals. If you should find yourself in debt then it is essential that you have a plan to get yourself out of it as quickly as you can. If you are unsure or finding it difficult to repay then a financial advisor is a good idea as they can sit down with you and discuss your options. They may, for example, advise you take out a loan if your debt is on a credit card as the interest rates will be a lot lower and you will get the amount paid off much faster. If it is looking likely that you are going to miss a regular payment on something like a mortgage then don’t shy away, get in touch with your lender as soon as possible. They are far more likely to want to work with you and sort something out if you speak to them than if you try to avoid them. If you don’t have debt problems then there are still things you can do to make sure you never find yourself with a bill you are unable to pay. One way of doing this is to look at your insurances. Have you got the right insurances? The right amount of cover?
Buying insurance can sometimes feel like a minefield. Life insurance, buildings and contents insurance, pet insurance, car insurance, income protection, health cover, travel insurance, phone protection, the list goes on! Start by deciding which you need – make sure if you’re paying for health cover you’re not also getting the same cover as part of your job. Similarly, some bank accounts come with free travel insurance making separate purchase unnecessary. Paying twice makes absolutely no sense but can easily be done if it is small monthly amounts. Also it pays to shop around. The easiest way to do this is to visit a price comparison website. If you don’t already have a Will then you should give it some serious thought. If you are careful with your finances during your life then you may have a clear idea of who you would like to inherit any money and assets, such as a house, when you are no longer around. Unfortunately, if you have not made a Will then your possessions may not be distributed as you would have wished. If you have a partner but are not married then they do not automatically inherit from you and this may lead to them experiencing their own financial hardships down the line. Most importantly, if you have children then you need to make it clear what arrangements you would like made for them (who will care for them and how any money you leave will be used to help them for example) to avoid any unnecessary legal battles or upheaval. Finally, if you own a business, whether it is something you run part-time from home or is your main source of income then make sure you are paying the right insurances and rates – an accountant will be able to easily tell you what you should and should not be paying. If in doubt always ask a professional as although they may charge you for their time you could end up saving money long term. SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk |

Holidays 2015
Getting Away in 2015 It’s always nice at the start of the year to sit down and plan your holidays. Whether it’s a city break, a staycation or the trip of a lifetime, having something to look forward to can be a real treat
O
❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
nce the budget is all decided the fun can begin with how to spend it! Luxury 5 star all inclusive? Beach holiday, room only? Trips out or poolside? The possibilities go on and on! If you have no idea where to start then visit a travel agent. They will be able to help you narrow your search as well as tailor make a holiday which is personal to you. Rather than having to select a destination, book your flights and accommodation and trips separately you can let the agent do the hard work for you! Where possible try and use a travel agent who is a member of ABTA (the Association of British Travel Agents). ABTA is the UK’s largest travel association, representing travel agents and tour operators that sell £31.5 billion of holidays and other travel arrangements each year. They currently have around 1200 members and represent around 5000 shops and offices. Once your holiday is booked you can to relax knowing know that ABTA’s Code of Conduct means that you can expect high standards from their members. You’ll also be reassured to know that all package and ‘Flight-Plus’ holidays that have been sold by ABTA members are protected financially in the event of a company failure. This means that in the unlikely event your travel company goes out of business, ABTA have a quick, clear and simple process for you to follow, so you’ll be able to continue your holiday as planned or get your money back. Well-known financial protection schemes include ABTA’s own scheme as well as ATOL which covers all flight-based packages.
28 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON
Many ABTA members also offer additional financial protection for services such as hotels or flights, which may not automatically be protected under a scheme. Always be sure to ask your travel company about the type of financial protection it has in place. If you decide to stay at home and holiday in the UK then you can use your travel agent or there are a host of websites you can visit to get you started. Family-friendly destinations such as Center Parcs, Hoseasons or Butlins all have regular deals and offers on their websites and bargain sites such as Travelzoo can show you the different offers in the areas you would like to travel to. If you are familiar with where you are going you can look at sites which offer holiday cottages or even hotels to check availablilty. Early trends for next year include active holidays so if cycling, surfing or golf are your thing then there will be a huge selection for you to choose from both at home and abroad. China and Japan are also high on the hot destination list with much to see and do and European city breaks are still popular.

To Move or Improve
To Move or To Improve? Two options which need carefully weighing up – should you move house or stay put and alter where you are?
W
ith the usual New Year’s resolutions often come the bigger decisions regarding work and home. It’s as if the clock has reset and people begin to reflect on their situation. If living arrangements feature on the list then it is worth weighing up the pros and cons of moving house. Moving house offers the benefits of having somewhere larger (or smaller if you feel it is the right time to downsize) as well as not having to co-ordinate all of the work yourself (services such as Estate Agents, Solicitors and Surveyors will do much of the work for you). If you decide to stay where you are and make some home improvements then there could potentially be more disruption (depending on the type of changes you are making) but the big benefit is that you can do everything to your specifications and so will end up with exactly what you want. There are some relatively small changes you can make which will improve your home. The first is to change your windows. By updating your windows not only will they make a difference to the outside appearance of your home but you may also reap the benefits in terms of your heating bills coming down. Having a porch put in can also help with your heating bills. If you are looking for more space then an extension might be the way forward. A ground floor or a garage conversion will cause the least amount of disruption to your daily routines. Depending on how far out you want to extend you may not need planning permission. If you

are planning on something on a grander scale then it is a good idea to get an architect involved from the early planning stages. Make sure you get someone who knows the area well as they will be familiar with local planning regulations and be more likely to get planning permission approved first time which will be more cost effective for you. Having an architect will also ensure that you get the best use from your space and there will be no problems uncovered by your builder when they are half way down the line! If an extension is a real possibility then make sure you investigate two storey extensions as well as sometimes they can be just as economical – doubling the space will not necessarily mean doubling the price. There is also the option to convert your loft space which, while it is expensive, can give you a huge space to play with. Not every loft will convert though so it is worth doing your homework before you decide on doing this. You can also look at converting smaller bedrooms into ensuite rooms which could make mornings a lot easier! If this all sounds like a lot of hard work then you can always start by having a good clear out and maybe calling a decorator. New wallpaper or a fresh coat of paint can transform a room. Also take a look at your floors – new carpet, lino or wooden floors can give your house a lift. You could also speak to an electrician and update your lighting as this can also make a huge impact. Whether your improvements are large or small, doing them can make a large difference to you in both the short term and the long term as when you come to sell your house down the line, making the right improvements can add value to your home’s value. The Boston Barrier Scheme A huge grant from the government for a flood defence spells good news for the people of Boston
T
he devastation caused by the flooding in Boston back in 2013 is still fresh in everyone’s minds with thousands of homes and businesses affected. In some cases people are still picking up the pieces a year on so for those who have just rebuilt their lives or had a near-miss last time news of the grant is very welcome indeed. Across Lincolnshire and Northamptonshire £2.3b is being spent on flood defences, with Boston being at the heart of that investment to ensure that the Boston Barrier is completed in the shortest possible time. Lincolnshire County Council is also contributing £11m which will aim to bring money into the area via tourism. Danny Alexander, Chief Secretary to the Treasury said: “Floods can devastate our communities, which is why I have fast-tracked the delivery of the £90 million Boston barrier, as well as nearly £150 million across the region to protect thousands of homes and businesses.” The £90.2million multi-functional Boston Barrier will provide protection against a tidal flood with a 1 in 300 (0.33%) annual chance for the next 70 years. It will also provide safe inland navigation during the boating season (April to October) by retaining daytime low tide water levels upstream of the barrier. The barrier will not retain water levels during a tidal or fluvial flood event. By retaining water levels through the town, the Boston Barrier will complete the second stage of the Fens Waterways Link, providing safe and reliable access to the South Forty Foot Drain and resulting in wider economic opportunities to deprived areas of Lincolnshire. Lincolnshire County Council has already contributed £11million in partnership funding for water level management. The Boston Barrier partnership is between the Environment Agency, Lincolnshire County Council, Boston Borough Council and Black Sluice Internal Drainage Board, who are all working together to reduce the risk of tidal flooding to the whole Borough of Boston. The Boston Combined Strategy was published in March, 2008, after extensive consultation. The strategy aims to “manage the risk from tidal flooding in Boston whilst enabling opportunities for regenerating the town’s waterways”. A major element is to construct a tidal barrier across the Haven. The Boston Combined Strategy sets out that the tidal barrier should have two main functions: to reduce the risk of a tidal surge flooding the town and to control water levels in the Haven to provide a more attractive waterfront making navigation on Boston’s waterways safer and more predictable. This will achieve a major phase of the Fens Waterways Link, with more opportunities for recreation and tourism.
❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
“...we cannot protect against the most extreme tidal surges, but the barrier will protect Boston in most cases and give the town one of the best standards of protection against tidal flooding in the country.” When the barrier is built and the banks immediately downstream are raised, Boston will be protected from a tidal surge with a 0.3% annual probability (or 1 in 300 chance of happening in any one year). Unfortunately, we cannot protect against the most extreme tidal surges, but the barrier will protect Boston in most cases and give the town one of the best standards of protection against tidal flooding in the country. Before the business case was developed, the Environment Agency engaged with key partners and the local community on the concept of a multifunctional tidal barrier in Boston and how this would reduce flood risk and help to regenerate the town. There were a series of drop-in sessions in 2011 to provide an opportunity for local residents and businesses to comment on the location of barrier. There was good attendance from local residents living near the proposed barrier location. If you have any questions about the Boston Barrier or if you’d like to receive updates about the project then please contact Boston.Barrier@environment-agency. gov.uk.

New Ford Focus Ford has crafted a more sophisticated and advanced Focus with a redesign to reflect the One Ford global design language.
A
vailable in five -door and estate body styles, the new Focus has a lower, wider stance, with a new bonnet, front fascia and grille. The bonnet is sculpted with a dynamic shape from the front pillar to the corners of the upper part of the inverted trapezoidal grille to deliver a strong, proud look. Slimmer; chiselled front headlamps and elongated fog-lamps add to the bolder front end. Subtle chrome details add to the feeling of elegance while the rear of the car also is sleeker with a new fascia and tailgate arrangement, as well as thinner tail lamps. When redesigning the interior of the new Focus, Ford obviously listened to customer feedback and responded with a more intuitive layout, complemented by a steering wheel and central stack with fewer controls and switches. The new black satin trim and chrome detailing contribute to a cleaner, more modern look. The redesigned centre storage console offers more space as well as a new sliding, integrated armrest. The adjustable console accommodates a variety of bottles and cups with the capacity to hold a one-litre water bottle and a 0.4-litre cup simultaneously. The new Focus offers fuel efficiency improvements of up to 15 per cent compared with the outgoing model, and a significant reduction in CO2 emissions across the range. The fresh Focus will continue to offer a 99 g/km CO2 100PS 1.0-litre EcoBoost petrol 36 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON
❱ BY TIM BARNES-CLAY engine variant, the previous version of which recently became the first non-hybrid petrol family car in Europe to achieve sub100 g/km CO2 emissions. As well as that, the new Focus also will be offered with Ford’s new fuel-efficient 1.5-litre EcoBoost petrol engine, with a new six-speed automatic gearbox. When mated to the six-speed manual gearbox, the engine will deliver a seven per cent fuel efficiency improvement compared with the outgoing 1.6-litre EcoBoost engine that offered equivalent power. It will also be offered for the first time with Ford’s 1.5-litre TDCi diesel, available with 95PS or 120PS, and a 10 per cent fuel efficiency improvement compared to the 1.6-litre engine it replaces. The 150PS 2.0-litre TDCi model with sixspeed manual gearbox will deliver a 15 per cent improvement over the previous 140PS model. Ford engineers have delivered a more solid, responsive and connected-to-the-road feel by increasing the structural stiffness at the front, revising the suspension geometry, increasing lateral stiffness of “steeringrelevant” suspension bushes, and retuning the shock absorbers. The Electric Power Assisted Steering has been re-tuned to make you feel even more connected to the road. Ford’s industry-first Enhanced Transitional Stability system monitors vehicle speed and your steering input to predict a loss of traction before it actually happens and triggers Electronic
Stability Control sooner to enhance safety and help deliver smoother journeys. The new Focus will also be available with paddle-shifters that enable you to control gear changes while keeping your hands on the steering wheel. Paddle-shift controls will be available as an option with all automatic and PowerShift transmissions, diesel and petrol. The highly acclaimed driving experience is further refined with improvements to noise, vibration and harshness that help deliver best-in-class levels of interior quietness in the Focus, and contribute to a more relaxing and stress-free environment. With enhanced handling and steering, the new Focus takes the model’s classleading driving dynamics and acclaimed fun-to-drive DNA to a new level. www.carwriteups.co.uk Tweeting: @carwriteups

Entertainment What’s on
January 23 7:30pm Boston Blackfriars For a while most people thought of her as the precocious next-generation talent that produced one of the defining hits of the internet age, ‘I Wish I Was A Punk Rocker (With Flowers In My Hair)’, this talented singer-songwriter has come a long way in the years since then. As Sandi now says, “The strange thing about having the kind of success I had, people think they know you. In fact, people don’t know me at all.”That is all about to change, however, with the release of Sandi’s superb new album, Flesh and Blood. Recorded at Nashville’s legendary 16 Tons studio, with celebrated Black Crowes guitarist Rich Robinson in the production hot seat, the fourth Sandi Thom album is, she says, “the first album I’ve made that is really all about me.” Describing it as “a new chapter” in her story, personally and professionally, she adds: “I never liked to pigeonhole myself. I feel like my sound and voice have been naturally developing since I was 14-years-old, and that it’s only now I’ve finally
hit upon what I really sound like.” It’s a sound that combines the blues-rock raunch of belting opening track ‘Help Me’ with the balladic, country-flavoured charm of ‘In The Pines’; that shows how to funk it up, as on the strutting, clavinet-led ‘Stormy Weather’; and that knows how to break your heart, as with the movingly climactic finale track, ‘Lay Your Burden Down’. Sandi: “The best part about it was being able to breakout and work with all these different musicians, putting it all in the melting pot and seeing what comes out.” Adds Rich Robinson: “I’m really proud of Sandi’s record. With the help of a great band of musicians, Sandi really stretched herself and made a bold new album. Her songs are honest and very strong. Her vocal abilities are showcased really well on this record, as well as her guitar work, and harp playing. Sandi’s a well-rounded musician and she made a great record. It was great working with her.”
