to raise achievement for all.
Welcome to the January issue
Welcome to the first issue of 2020! A new year is an opportunity to reflect on the passing year as well as being full of anticipation and excitement for what is to come. In our household 2019 has been an exciting one as our son started school in September and already it has been amazing to see him grow and learn new skills but I do feel we have lost a part of him. We certainly make the most of weekends and school holidays now. We are definitely a family that likes to pull on their wellies and get out and about whatever the weather. We have a few trips planned for 2020 but will be exploring UK soil for this year with a couple of camping trips in the diary, I am still working on my husband to agree a break at Center Parcs! Back to the issue and we are trying to inspire you with ideas to either move or improve your home, a focus on our town centre, Tim test drives Renault’s all new Grand Scenic and we look at owning a pet. If you can are struggling to make one new years’ resolution and want to help the area you live please try to think about where you spend your money; be it for fruit and veg, bread, meat, a new fence, repairs to your house or buying clothes or cosmetics. If we all made a conscious effort to support our independent shops and traders we can dramatically change the local economy, investment in the high street and improve the area we live. All that’s left for me to say is enjoy the issue and once again wish you a happy new year!

Soundlincs Shortlisted For Prestigious National Award soundLINCS, the Lincolnshire community music charity, has beaten off intense UK competition and has been shortlisted for a major national award that recognises the ground breaking work that the charity has done in the area of Special Educational Needs and Disability. The National Music & Drama Education Awards is an annual event which celebrates the best examples of innovation and exemplary work and contribution made by professionals, companies, charities, schools and other organisations to the lives of others through the medium of these two key performing arts. Considered by some to be the industry equivalent of the Oscars, to be a finalist is a huge achievement for the Company. Speaking on behalf of the awards organisers, Valerie Amegatcher of the Mark Allen Group said: “This is a tremendous achievement against extremely tough competition. This year we received an astounding number of entries, so being shortlisted is an incredible feat.” soundLINCS has been recognised as a finalist in the OUTSTANDING MUSIC EDUCATION RESOURCE category for its Good Vibrations toolkit. The Good Vibrations toolkit promotes an understanding of how people who are
deaf and hearing impaired can experience music. People who are endeavouring to deliver musically inclusive activities can practically use this toolkit to find information, activities, advice and resources to support their music delivery. The Good Vibrations toolkit is designed to be a colourful and dynamic booklet offering short, quick tips and advice for adults who need a time-effective information source when delivering music with deaf and hearing impaired children and young people. Dame Evelyn Glennie, the world’s premiere solo percussionist, composer and speaker, profoundly deaf since the age of 12 remarks: “This is such an excellent toolkit, hugely helpful, and will be a great resource”. Dr Paul Whittaker OBE, founder of Music and the Deaf comments: “Congratulations to soundLINCS on creating Good Vibrations. As a deaf musician with over 30 years’ experience of teaching and promoting the topic, I know there is a need for a guide explaining why music is important for deaf people, and that helps you find out more. Nikki-Kate Heyes MBE, soundLINCS CEO explains: “We are absolutely thrilled to be nominated for this fantastic award. It is a recognition of the
tremendous efforts that have gone into creating this resource and a strong validation of the importance of soundLINCS and community music contributing to a thriving sector in the Lincolnshire and the East Midlands.” Copies of the toolkit can be downloaded at http://www.soundlincs.org/resources/ goodvibrationstoolkit/ The National Music & Drama Education Awards will be held in March 2020 in London.
Consultation regarding proposed removal of BT Payphones Boston Borough Council have received a consultation from BT in relation to proposals to remove 2 payphones in our area. The proposed payphones to be removed are as follows; • Junction of Mount Bridge Windsor Bank, Boston (01205 362853) • Opposite Pincushion Inn, London Road, Boston (01205 363109) The Local Authority are required to carry out consultation with local groups and consider any

representations received in relation to the removal of the payphones. A first notification will then be prepared, setting out whether the Local Authority agrees or objects to the proposals and a further consultation will be carried out to this notification prior to a final notification being issued before the close of the consultation on 1st March 2020. Any comments you wish to make on the above consultation must be received in writing by 17th January
2020. You can make comment by email to planning@boston.gov. uk or send them to the postal address marked for the attention of Development Management. This consultation process gives your local communities the opportunity to adopt a traditional red ‘heritage’ phone box and make them an asset that local people can enjoy. It’s really simple to do and it costs just £1 – http://bt.com/adopt. If this is something the community
is interested in, please include as a response to the consultation and the council will pass details on to BT on your behalf. Please be aware that Boston Borough Council are not the determining authority in relation to the removal of payphones by BT, we are being consulted on the proposals. If you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact the Development Management Team on 01205 314305.
Purple bin trial smashes target
Residents taking part in the paper and card trial have achieved a 98.5% content quality target exceeding the set target. The trial, which began in September, for 3229 properties, is part of a countywide scheme collecting paper and card separately to improve recycling efficiency. Success of the scheme is largely down to residents correctly separating their paper and card. This success shows their ability and willingness to recycle.
However, this has also highlighted the level of improvement necessary for our blue bin recycling borough-wide, following the Lincolnshire Waste Partnership decision to create new easy to follow flyers and stickers. Tougher guidelines for mixed recycling in the trial area are already seeing improvements with a 20% increase in bins collected this month compared to last month.
Help us keep everyone safe this festive season Boston Borough Council is supporting Counter Terrorism Police’s campaign to help keep crowded places safe over the festive period. Officers are calling on the public and those who work in our busy towns and cities to remain vigilant and report any concerns to staff, security or – in confidence – to the police at gov.uk/ACT This annual campaign asks everyone to be the extra eyes and ears of the police, so we can work together to tackle terrorism. Senior National Coordinator for Protective Security, Deputy Assistant Commissioner Lucy D’Orsi, says: “We are asking everyone out and about enjoying the season to put security at the top of their festive list. “The chances of any one person being caught up in a terrorist incident are low. But sadly, as we saw in 2017 and more recently,
attacks can be carried out anywhere and anytime. “The national threat level remains Substantial, meaning an attack is likely, so we need to remain vigilant. “Our message is not to worry that you might be wasting our time. If you see something that
doesn’t look right – ACT. Report it either to local security or staff – or to police at http://bit.ly/ ACTMids – and let us check it out. “A few minutes of your time could be a precious gift that helps saves lives. Please be a good CT citizen this festive period.” www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON | 5

Mini Police As I write this article, Christmas is rapidly approaching. Our Mini Police schools are finishing off tasks and delivering assemblies as well as carrying out community engagements. There have been some amazing tasks carried out over the past few months, with the new intakes of pupils joining the program in Year 5, and returning pupils carrying on their great work in Year 6. Looking back, it is great to see some of the amazing work our program has delivered in local schools since September: Pupils from Sutterton Fourfields recently carried out
their Scam Awareness task, learning about different types of scams, how to spot the signs and what help is available. They then took this out into the community, with PC Neil Williams arranging for them to have a pop-up stand in the new Budgens/Starbucks retail outlet on the A16/17 roundabout. Swineshead St Mary primary school have carried out their Anti-Bullying task, learning about why bullying happens and what can be done to stop it. Fishtoft Academy Mini Police recently took part in a shoebox donation appeal, working with others in their school to donate
to a worthy cause. PCSO Hannah Baker has been busy with CSI (Crime Scene Investigation) tasks at Hawthorn Tree Primary and Fishtoft Academy, showing the children about how the police use science to solve crime. Crime Scene Investigation was also carried out by PCSO Baker at Butterwick Primary School, where the Mini Police learnt about fingerprints, DNA and other techniques used by the police to solve crime. They also produced an AMAZING video from the topic (check it out on our Twitter page). PCSO Kym Rayment has been busy in Old Leake and Wrangle, with schools taking part in their Anti-Bullying tasks, learning how to identify and stop bullying. PCSO Marie Williams has been busy, looking after not only her Mini Police schools, but also working with the East Lincolnshire Down’s Syndrome Family Support Group (find
them on Facebook) where she called in to talk to them about personal safety and to present them with certificates for completing our Mini-Marathon fun-run back in September. Wyberton Mini Police have been out talking to parents about parking safely around school as part of National Road Safety week. On top of this, many of our schools found time to create amazing designs for the annual Mini Police Christmas Card design competition, with the design chosen by Police and Crime Commissioner Marc Jones coming from Millie at Swineshead St Marys Primary School. These are just a few of the great topics and tasks covered by our Mini Police program. We look forward to keeping you up-to-date about the great work all of our schools do across the area.

Boston College Boston College is celebrating after being ranked joint 5th out of over 180 Further Education colleges across the whole country. The result comes from the NICDEX 2019 national league table, which is compiled annually using official performance measures from the Department for Education (DFE). Points are awarded against four quality of provision measures; Learner Satisfaction, Employer Satisfaction, 16-18 year olds Positive Progression, Adults into Employment Progression. Overall the College scored an impressive 31 out of a possible 40 points, with exceptionally high scores in Employer Satisfaction (10/10) and Learner Satisfaction (9/10). This evidences the commitment and skill of the College’s staff team in ensuring a high quality learner experience which links closely to industry and employer requirements. Speaking of the results, Vicki Locke, Vice Principal – Curriculum and Quality said, “This is a fantastic achievement for the College. Results like this only come from a team effort and being closely focused on what matters most to learners. We have a clear and simple vision which is ‘to be a brilliant college and for every learner to be brilliant’. Ensuring our learners have the knowledge, skills, and behaviours to successfully progress into higher education or to employment is pivotal to our vision. We are very proud to receive this recognition in this year’s national league tables.”

Family Life
What kind of pet is best for my home? The perfect pet for you can be dependent on the type of home that you live in. Flats and houses, as well as those that have (or do not have) a garden can have a surprising impact on which pets are right for you. To help you figure out which animal is best suited to your home, we have put together this helpful guide – giving you a better idea of your options. House If you live in a house, then you will often have a little more space than a flat. This means that you can have a slightly wider variety of pets living with you in your home. Of course, if you do not have a garden, then it may not be suitable for most breeds of dog – especially those with high energy levels. Here is a list of pets that are suited to your home: • Rabbits (indoor) • Cats (indoor or outdoor) • Dogs with low energy levels • Caged rodents, such as rats and hamsters • Small birds • Large birds • Fish • Turtles
Flat If you live in a flat, then you often do not have a great deal of space for your pets to run around. As a result, large dogs and those with high energy levels are often not suited to this kind of accommodation. Here is a list of pets that are most suited to your home: • Rabbits (indoor) • Cats (indoor) • Small dogs with low energy levels • Caged rodents, such as rats and hamsters • Small birds • Fish • Turtles House with garden If you have a house with a garden, there are a wider range of pets available to you. Of course, your garden should be a secure one before you get any pets – especially those that you do not want to escape. Here is a list of pets that would be suited to your home: • Rabbits (indoor or outdoor) • Guinea Pigs
• Ferrets • Cats (indoor or outdoor) • Dogs • Caged rodents, such as rats and hamsters • Small birds • Large birds • Fish • Turtles House with land and facilities Some houses have land and additional facilities like stables and equestrian areas. For these homes, your options are even broader, and you can enjoy the opportunity to have just about any pet you like living comfortably in your home. Here is a list of pets that you can benefit from: • Rabbits (indoor or outdoor) • Guinea Pigs • Ferrets • Cats (indoor or outdoor) • Dogs • Horses • Donkeys • Caged rodents, such as rats and hamsters • Small birds • Large birds • Fish • Turtles
Did you Know? 1. Most hamsters are actually crepuscular, which means that they’re not nocturnal, they prefer twilight hours. 2. Tarantulas can regenerate lost legs when they go through a molt. 3. Male puppies will often let female puppies win when playing. 4. No two dog noses are the same. They are the equivalent to our fingerprints. 5. It takes about 60 bones to make the shell of a turtle
Latest findings from PDSA showed that: • 50% of UK adults own a pet. • 24% of UK adults have a cat with an estimated population of 10.9 million pet cats • 26% of the UK adult population have a dog with an estimated population of 9.9 million pet dogs • 2% of the UK adult population have a rabbit with an estimated population of 900,000 pet rabbits 14 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

If you’re facing the prospect of having to choice the music for a funeral? It’s a bit like Desert Island Discs, choosing the funeral songs that mean something to you or finding the best tunes for a loved ones’ farewell can be challenging too. Where once it was Debussy’s Clair de Lune that sent the funeral congregation reaching for their handkerchiefs, today it’s more likely to be modern funeral songs like Robbie Williams’ ‘Angels’, or Led Zeppelin’s ‘Stairway to Heaven’. These changes reflect how more people are opting for a funeral as a celebration of life over a traditional service. To give you some inspiration, here’s a selection of popular funeral songs as well as some more unusual choices. Poignant and uplifting funeral songs As you’d expect, sad songs feature highly in most top 10 funeral song lists. It’s not hard to see why these poignant and uplifting qualities are popular choices:
Sad funeral songs tlife • I’ll See You Again Wes Cassidy • Over the Rainbow - Eva gs - Bette • Wind Beneath My Win Midler You • Nothing Compares to Sinead O’Connor Pink • Wish You Were Here – Floyd
Happy funeral songs
• Always Look on the Bright Sid e of Life – Monty Py thon’s Life of Br ian • Bring Me Su nshine – More cambe and Wise • Don’t Worry. Be Happy – Bo bby McFerrin • What a Wond erful World – Louis Ar mstro ng • You Are the Su nshine of My Life – Stevie Wo nder

Pollywiggle Cottage Pollywiggle Cottage is a charming 3 bedroom Victorian cottage in the popular coastal village of Heacham available for short breaks and holidays. Just over an hour’s drive away it really is the gateway to the beautiful North Norfolk coast.
T
he cosy cottage built in 1882 sleeps 6 in 3 bedrooms (king, double & bunk) plus we have a cot for a baby. We welcome well behaved dogs and have tried to supply everything you will need for babies and pets - travel cot, high chair, baby monitor, dog crate, dog bowls etc. On sunny days the south facing enclosed garden is a great place to relax with table and chairs as well as a BBQ. Or on those winter nights you can warm up in front of the open fire. There is also complementary wifi & parking to the rear of the property. All prices include a full clean before and after your visit as well as linen and towels - you will just need your bikini and beach towels! The Local Area Heacham became popular as a seaside resort with the Victorians due to the opening of the railway between King’s Lynn and Hunstanton in the early 1860s. North Beach has an amusement arcade, a cafe and a fish bar. There are also beach huts available for hire. Both beaches have public toilet facilities. South Beach has its own cafe, which serves meals throughout the year and sells beach goods. It’s a 20-30 minute stroll along the promenade into Hunstanton where you will find an array of restaurants, amusements, fair rides, SeaLife Centre, swimming pool and much more. The beaches at Heacham are situated on the east banks of The Wash; this means it is one of the few beaches in eastern
England where the sun sets over the sea instead of over the land. Many say Heacham village is the largest village in the UK and has all the facilities you would need on your doorstep – Tesco Local, McColls, Indian restaurant, Fish and Chip shop, cycle hire, 3 pubs and the Coasthopper bus route stops just 30 seconds from the front door if you do not wish to travel by car to see all the sights of the coast. Pollywiggle Cottage is always well reviewed and every tripadvisor rating is either 4 or 5 stars! Here’s what our guests say: “Stayed for 4 nights in April with 13 month old daughter and our dog. Perfect little cottage in a handy location. Well equipped for babies, with high chair, travel cot, video monitor, black out blind and even toys! Shops, bakery, butchers, Indian/Chinese/ chippy takeaways all in walking distance as is the beach. Handy to have its own parking (all be it a bit tight for two cars). Nice safe enclosed garden for the dog and dog bowls & blankets provided. We even got amazing weather! Thank you.” “We have just returned from another wonderful weekend at the beautiful Pollywiggle cottage. We found the owners really have thought of everything you may need to make the stay feel like home from home. If your traveling with children they have all the essentials and more! There’s a toy box in the children’s room which kept our 3 entertained for hours. A baby monitor, stair gates, blackout blind, bed
rail.. you name it, it’s there! They even have the fur babies covered too with dog bowls, crates and balls! The cottage is very clean and tastefully decorated. We loved having the open fire roaring away on a cold winter evening! It really is the perfect place to warm up and relax with a glass of wine after a chilly afternoon walking on the beach. There are a few pubs and restaurants within easy walking distance. We can highly recommend the Spice garden for an evening meal and the Bushel and Strike for a pint. The Bushel is very dog friendly and has a children’s playground. We would highly recommend a stay here and hope to return in the summer.” “Second stay at the property. It’s just so cosy and lovely. Great location and the owner is very friendly and helpful. Perfect for a break away with your dogs. Quiet comfortable and clean :-) planning to go back next year too. Love it Thanks for the goody bags too much appreciated and really made it extra special!” “Lovely cottage with all the cosy extras (log fire/ blankets/ lighting ) with modern touches. Very clean and well-kept and with a parking space at the rear, with plenty more road parking close by. It is within walking distance of a number of pubs and beaches. Sleep 2 x Doubles and Bunk (3 Bedrooms) Welcoming for all ages and 2 fur babies.. (dogs). I will be returning again in the new year. Nice to find a clean wellpresented accommodation that makes you feel like it is “home from home”.

Boston a Town wi th History Boston is one of several historic towns identified by Historic England as meriting particular attention, to encourage people to appreciate and cherish their extraordinary heritage. We are all lucky enough to live here but sometimes you miss what is on your doorstep.
In medieval times, Boston was the most important port in England outside London, with connections throughout northern Europe. The network of alleys leading off the vast Market Place was established over 600 years ago, and many timber-framed structures lurk behind 18th and 19th-century façades. The Guildhall (now a museum), built in around 1390, is one of the earliest brick buildings in Lincolnshire. It still has the cells where two Pilgrim Fathers are thought to have been held when they first tried, unsuccessfully, to escape religious persecution by leaving for America. Boston’s prosperity is reflected in its buildings, for
22 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk
example the splendid Fydell House in South Square and other grand Georgian houses in the High Street and Wide Bargate. Many buildings are thought to resemble those of the Netherlands. Indeed, in 1942 – when filming could not be carried out in Nazi-occupied Europe – the town stood in for the Netherlands in Powell & Pressburger’s film ‘One of Aircraft is Missing’. The banks of the river Witham (which is called the Haven as it passes through Boston) show off Boston’s maritime past, including the Custom House (1725) and old warehouses, now mostly converted to apartments. In the early 19th century, Boston became an important industrial centre. Reminders of this are the Maud Foster windmill, which still produces flour, and a factory with a façade dominated by a giant swan. Why the swan? Because the factory processed feathers, once a major local industry. As Boston expanded, well-to-do citizens moved from the centre to handsome villas, especially along Spilsby Road to the north east and along the banks of the Witham. New churches were built, such as the beautiful Arts & Crafts influenced St Thomas’s and the almost baroque Centenary Methodist Chapel. Home & Property
Move or Improve?
Is it better to renovate and improve your current home, or move to a new place? If you’re one of the thousands of homeowners puzzling over that question, you’ll know there’s rarely an easy answer. Here are five key factors to consider. 1. Plan and budget Enjoy coming home to a tidy house every day by making use of shelves, hooks and storage boxes in your hallway. Dedicate a box and hook to each member of your family and keep everyone’s outdoor essentials looking spick and span. Using a combination of storage solutions will work wonders for keeping your entrance way clutterfree. If you’re leaning towards renovating... Planning is particularly important if you’re renovating, because the cost of renovating can vary dramatically. You need to keep track of your spending. Make a list of what you need to do to your property, and be strict with yourself when you make it. Focus on what you really need to do, and try to leave off those things you can live without. Once your list is made, try to stick to it as closely as you can. It can be tempting to throw in loads of extra improvements once the work gets started, but this can massively increase the overall cost of the renovation. Think about the future too. Do you have plans to sell your home later? If so, do your research, and check that the renovations you’re making will actually add value. 2. Think about your location So you’ve made your renovate vs move list, and there’s a clear winner in terms of costs. But there are other things to think about too - not least the location of your current property. Your current home might be in the perfect location. You might be near family, or have strong ties to the local community. Or maybe it’s just really convenient, with public transport,
24 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk
good schools and the nearest doctor’s on your doorstep. A great location is a rare thing. If you can’t find a new house in a similarly great place, it might be better to renovate than move, even if it is a bit more expensive. On the other hand, you might not like where you live, or it might not be suitable for you in the future. If you’re thinking of having children, for example, you might need to be closer to schools and public transport. Even if renovating is cheaper, it might be wise to move to get to a better location. Create a clean look in your bathroom Breathe new life into your bathroom with a chic set of storage units. Hide bottles and brushes away in the drawers and use the display units to put your mirror, favourite plant or prized products at centre stage. Embrace the Scandi trend and plump for crisp white cabinets. This timeless shade is easy to pair with any bathroom colour scheme, whether your walls are sophisticated dove grey or traditional blue. 3. Think about emotional attachments And then there are the intangible things. The things you can’t put a number on. Money’s important, and getting the right location is great, but don’t ignore how you feel. You might simply love your house, and can’t bear to leave it behind. If it makes you happy, it might be worth staying put and renovating, even if the house does have a few problems you can’t fix. 4. Consider if the property is suitable for renovating
Before you make your decision, you need to know whether your property is suitable for renovation. Will you need planning permission? If so, will you be able to get it? Making structural changes, such as knocking down walls or adding doors, usually requires planning permission, but internal changes are generally okay. There are exceptions to this, though, so you’ll need to do your homework. And if you want to extend your house, you’ll need to check the boundaries for the garden. There may be strict limits on how big your property can be. Checking the structure of a house isn’t easy, so it might be worth getting in touch with a professional. A property surveyor can help you avoid any costly mistakes. 5. Consider all the costs So you’ve made your budget and put together a meticulous plan, but be sure to take into account the less obvious costs of renovating or moving. For example. if you’re leaning towards renovating... • Storage: If you renovate, you might have to store some of your stuff
elsewhere while the work’s beng done • Pets: Dogs and cats might need somewhere else to go during the renovation, away from all the mess and work going on in your home • House surveys, to check that your house is suitable for renovating • Professional fees: depending on what you want to do with your house, you might need to hire surveyors, architects and other professionals And if you’re leaning towards moving... • Arrangement fees • Valuation fees • Survey fees • Stamp duty • Conveyancing fee • Land registry fee • Moving fees You might not have to pay all of these fees, but just a few of them can add a lot of money to the overall cost of buying your new house. So, should you renovate or move? In the end, it all depends on what you find important. Weigh up the costs, consider what you’ll want in the future, and follow what really makes you happy.
Banish Moss This Winter Are you fed up with breaking your back trying to clean weeds from your drive, or picking up moss balls every morning that are dropping from your roof? The Mossman could be the answer to your problems. We are different to other companies. We don’t use huge volumes of water, we don’t leave yours or your neighbours’ property in a mess and we use manufacturer’s guidelines to clean your blocks and tiles. A lot of people have a go themselves with wire brushes and/ or domestic pressure washers. Neither of these options kill the weeds or moss however, they simply remove the top greenery. In the case of the weeds it leaves the roots intact ready for regrowth and in the case of the moss any spores left behind have a nice damp environment to thrive. Pressure washing can also remove the sand on which the blocks are laid, making
your blocks drop and causing untold damage to your driveway which, in turn, could lead to having it re-laid. We kill the weeds and treat the moss and algae. We make sure the weeds have been killed at the root before brushing all the debris from between the block work. After all debris is removed we treat the surface to remove any algae left on the blocks. This will keep the surface of your blocks clean. We then re-treat the block paving every three months to help control the regrowth. As I’m sure you’re aware unless the blocks are maintained the weeds and moss will keep returning. We clean your drive from only £99.00. then, going forward, we maintain it from only £36 every three months. It’s cheaper than getting your windows cleaned. We also clean roofs. We do this in line with manufacturers recommendations and without jet washing water under your tiles. Again, we don’t just remove the
moss but apply our biocide to kill any remaining spores, lichen and algae. As part of the process all gutters are cleaned out and minor repairs made. Ask about our special rates for bungalows. Our services aren’t just for folks with lots of moss and weeds to deal with! If you’ve got a new roof or driveway or have recently had them cleaned, don’t let them get back to their old state again. Let us maintain
that fresh look so you don’t have to worry. We are fully qualified and insured for your piece of mind. Renault Grand Scenic Multi-purpose vehicles, once about as electrifying to look at as a soggy satsuma, are easier on the eye these days. You could even say they’re desirable, especially the current Renault Grand Scenic. Inside the French-made machine, digital instruments replace the conventional speedo that the old model housed. There’s also a prominent infotainment unit in the middle of the dashboard. If you can operate an iPad – it’ll be like falling off a log for you to use this. It all looks agreeably upmarket. But it’s not all about appearances. Behind the latest Grand Scenic’s stylish body and sporty 20-inch alloy wheels, you have a car that offers a practical transport solution for a family of seven. You never have to worry about where to put stuff as there are loads of oddment bins to keep coins, cans of drink – and toys. Picnic tables in the rear fold-out – and feel sturdy enough to put up with kids leaning on them and eating their lunch on. There are lots of trims to choose from, and I drove the Iconic, which comes with front and rear parking
sensors; DAB radio; cruise control and hill start assist. On the road, the Grand Scenic is agile for a large motor, and visibility is excellent. The car stays relatively free from body roll and offers a firm ride, but not an uncomfortable one. The five-door Renault is planted at speed, and it feels secure. And so it should, having achieved the top five-star safety rating from crash test body, Euro NCAP. The petrol version is the one to go for if you can. My test model had the 1330cc 140ps unit fitted. It gives just enough punch to make the car a good, efficient commuter. Top speed is only 119mph, but in a country besieged by safety cameras, is a fast car even relevant anymore? Not really – what’s more significant is the 40.9mpg the Grand Scenic can achieve with this engine. On top of that, you’ve got lowish CO2 emissions of 139g/km, meaning road tax is relatively cheap. As well as being transport for parents who haven’t given up on what their car looks like yet, the Grand Scenic offers a good seating set-up. In addition to the usual five chairs, two more can be raised from the cargo floor - making this a true seven-seater. Furthermore, one-touch folding seats collapse easily to give a flat floor. Oh, and this Renault is one of the only cars in its class - if not the only one - where you can activate this feature from inside the load area. The Grand Scenic also offers 596 litres of boot space when the five seats are up. And you still have 233-litres of cargo capacity when all seven seats are in use.
