Welcome to the June issue So, this month we have enjoyed our annual pilgrimage down to Cornwall, a couple of months earlier than usual and thankfully we were graced with some lovely weather, we managed a couple of days on the beach which pleased my son! Holidays with small children are definitely different to the days of laying by a pool and deciding which cocktail to order next! If you haven’t ever been I can fully recommend it, the journey is definitely rewarded with a beautiful coastline, clear waters and traditional fishing villages. But, back to reality and this issue! This month we hope to inspire you to pick up a new skill and take part in The Festival of learning, aimed to encourage adults to learn a new skill. There are many places who are offering discounted or free taster training courses for local adults. Did you know it’s also a time to celebrate the humble fish and chip dinner? June 2 is a day to get out there and celebrate the British dish. Don’t forget to mark in your diary July 6, it’s Boston Bike Night, if you enjoy something a bit different then make sure you pop into town for this event. And finally this month, Tim is giving the Ford C-Max a spin. All that’s left for me to say is enjoy the issue

NEWS Boston Triathlon Club
World’s flattest marathon goes global
Three friends from different sporting backgrounds met up socially all with a common interest to compete at the sport of Triathlon. During the conversation identified that there wasn’t a local triathlon club in Boston an agreement was reached that they would first gauge the interest if any from likeminded people with the same aspirations to compete at the sport of Triathlon. The club has come a long way since its formation in May 2016. Since then and after a lot of hard work there are sponsorship deals in place from local businesses and Funding from Lottery offering a great support network. The training is undertaken by professional qualified coaches in all disciplines at various locations and times to suit a wide range of local people. One important aspect of the club was to offer a good youth development programme and to this end coaches have made visits to local schools to encourage young people to get involved in a safe and healthy way of life whilst having fun. The club offers Go Tri events: Duathlons run cycle run, Aquathons swim and run, Triathlons swim cycle run, allowing people to come along and try out the sport. Recently juniors have taken part in the RAF Scampton Duathlon some of them for the first time returning some amazing results. We also had several adult members taking part in the Southwell Triathlon again with some excellent results, thus proving the combination of effort and good coaching really does pay off. For a new club we have a real togetherness from committee & members to make sure we succeed in creating a great atmosphere for everyone.

Analysis of the second Boston Marathon has shown that the event has very rapidly gone global. Runners who took part came from America, Canada, Germany, France, Hungary, Belarus, Jordan and India. Closer to home competitors also arrived in town from York, Cambridge, Chesterfield, Cleethorpes, Grantham, Hull, Huntingdon, Leeds, Lincoln, London, Norwich, Nottingham, Peterborough, Rotherham, Sheffield, Wisbech and of course, Boston. Chairman of the organising committee, Cllr Richard Austin, said: “The marathon was set up to help promote Boston, a healthy lifestyle and community integration. It has certainly achieved that. We also want to cultivate closer ties with our daughter settlement in the USA.” Plans are already in hand for the third annual Boston Marathon next year, which will take place on Sunday, April 15, the day before the Boston Marathon in America which is always held on Patriots Day. The first event attracted 350 runners, rising to 771 this year. It included a half marathon and a fun run. Local businesses benefited, reporting increased business on
marathon day and money was raised by runners for charities including Butterfly Hospice, Boston Women’s Aid, Centrepoint Outreach, Macmillan Cancer Support and the Brain and Spine Foundation. A competition to vote for the best team of marshals saw the bridge team give their £100 prize to Dementia UK. More than 100 comments were received including congratulations to the organisers for a “brilliant day” and praise for the “entertaining” marshals and those manning the drink stations. Angela runs for Boston Women’s Aid. Angela Thompson, from Skegness and District Running Club, competed in the half marathon, raising funds for Boston Women’s Aid. She completed the course in 1 hour 45 minutes - a personal best time. She is pictured presenting Boston Women’s Aid chairman Will Herbert with her sponsorship money, which came to more than £300. BWA’s aims are prevention of domestic abuse, raising awareness of the dangers and potential outcomes, and reduction of harm resulting from abusive relationships. It operates outreaches across South Lincolnshire so victims (men and women) can access services locally.

Lost fishermen A tribute to the “Lost Fishermen of Boston” is being planned by a small team of wood carvers. Members of Boston and South Holland Wood Carvers are to build an eight-foot high oak monument to fishermen who sailed from Boston at the outbreak of the First World War and were killed or taken prisoner. Some of the fishermen put to sea unaware that war had been declared and ten of 16 deep-sea trawlers from the port were sunk in the first month of the conflict. Nine of the 16 belonged to the Boston Deep Sea Fishing Company. The Admiralty ordered a recall of trawlers at sea, but the messages were compromised by the scarcity of radio communications at that time. At least 51 fishermen lost their lives and 53 more were held prisoners of war. A scale model work-inprogress can be seen every Wednesday and Saturday between 10am and 1pm when the wood carvers are at work in St Botolph’s Church in Boston. The “tribute to the lost fishermen of Boston” will feature a three-cornered seat and interlinked carved panels on three or four sides of a rising tower with imagery reflective of the fishing industry and Boston’s maritime history. There will be some descriptive words. A location for it has not yet been decided upon, but it is hoped
to place it somewhere along The Haven, within view of vessels leaving and arriving the port in time for the centenary of the end of the First World War next November. Dog Grooming to Raise Vital Funds Jerry Green Dog Rescue in Algarkirk, Boston have just launched their brand new grooming enterprise to help raise money for their rescue dogs. Now they are able to offer grooming not only to the rescue dogs in their care but also to the public’s dogs as well. This means people can now book appointments to have their dog groomed with a fully qualified groomer who only works with positive handling techniques while helping a rescue dog still looking for a home, as all the profits go back to the rescue dogs. “We are really excited to launch this enterprise,” says Elizabeth Hempstock, Fundraising and Communications Officer for the Charity. “Most people don’t know this but our charity doesn’t get any government or lottery funding, we run soley on donations from kind members of the public, organisations and our local community, so it is really important that we find new and innovative ways to raise money to keep helping these rescue dogs.” Heather Sayer is the new hire that has stepped into the role. She is qualified to level three in city and guilds and has gained lots of experience running her own grooming business from home. Heather adds “I was over the moon to join the Jerry Green team and thrilled to be helping them raise more money for the wonderful dogs here. It is a wonderful concept where you get to pamper your dog and help another at the same time for no additional cost.” To book a Grooming appointment with Heather or for more information about costs, please email heather. sayer@jerrygreendogs.org.uk or Call or text 07785472849.

Equality and diversity are crucial to providing a high quality service to clients and to the long-term sustainability of the Citizens Advice network. Diversity is about learning to accept people from all different cultures, backgrounds and races for the wonderful uniqueness that makes everyone an important part of our community. There are many ways of thinking about equality. For example, from the 1980s until 2010 different groups of people were protected under different laws from different types of discrimination, and some were not protected at all. Since the Equality Act 2010, everyone is protected against discrimination because of five characteristics we all have - our race, sexual orientation, sex, age, and religion or belief ( or absence of) in a wide range of circumstances. People are also protected because of disability (including mental health), gender reassignment, marital/civil partnership status, pregnancy and maternity. However the key thing about this is that equality is for everyone. It includes us all and is not about specific equalities groups. It covers disadvantage that’s not just about the characteristics or circumstances covered by the Equality Act 2010, so it includes those facing disadvantage due to social exclusion, poverty, rural isolation, and class. At Citizens Advice, our clients come from a wide range of backgrounds. Between April 2016 and March 2017, our teams in Boston & North Kesteven helped to resolve 24,861 separate issues for a diverse range of 12,079 local people. Between them clients held over 25 nationalities and spoke in excess of 20 different languages. 52% of clients had a long term illness or disability - 22% of which related to mental health. Over 20% of clients were non UK nationals, almost 360 clients helped were under the age of 19 and over 3800 were over 60. The Citizens Advice service is available to everyone living, working, or travelling through Boston & North Kesteven, regardless of race or nationality, gender, disability, sexual orientation, religion, age or marital status. At Citizens Advice Mid Lincolnshire (CAML),
we value diversity, promote equality and challenge discrimination. We want to make sure that everyone can access our services and we are constantly reviewing and extending our facilities. We want to offer that opportunity to a wider range of people by attracting an even more diverse range of people to our service, both as service users and as volunteers. A more diverse volunteer base will bring a wider range of skills, experiences and perspectives, bring new ideas, help us better reflect the communities we serve, increase our people’s awareness of diversity and create opportunities to build partnerships and attract and sustain funding. Through our Value of Volunteering research, we know the benefits of volunteering with Citizens Advice include access to new networks and opportunities, gaining skills, knowledge and experience and reducing loneliness and exclusion. Our research found 9 in 10 volunteers agreed that volunteering for us was helping them move into employment, education or training. Due to a successful application to the Big Lottery Celebrate fund, which aims to celebrate local heros and bring people together to get to know their neighbours better , Citizens Advice Mid Lincolnshire is inviting local people interested in volunteering at our Boston or Sleaford offices to join us at our Volunteer Conference on Wednesday 7th June at Boston West Golf Club, Hubberts Bridge PE20 3QX between 2pm and 4pm.. . We will be focusing on offering more volunteering opportunities for disabled people , those with long term physical and/or mental health conditions and to people from a wide range of cultural and ethnic backgrounds. We will be providing information on range of roles from receptionist and adviser, to campaigner, trustee and administrator. People will have the opportunity to talk to our volunteer team to learn how volunteering has benefitted them, and to find out how they can overcome some of the barriers that may be preventing them from volunteering. No prior knowledge or experience is required and the benefits are huge. It is possible to turn up on the day, however to take advantage of a FREE cream tea in the marquee, booking is advised: email karena.hall@citizensadvicemidlincs.org. uk. to secure your place. We look forward to Celebrating with you!

School news
Bicker Preparatory School Calling teachers, PTA members, pupils… Do you have exciting news at your school? Please send details to editor@simplyboston.co.uk In class five, we have been studying Space. One of our pupils was lucky enough to visit NASA in America. She was able to report back to her class mates on the Space Agency’s work. Class 5 made models of the solar system and produced their own Space magazine to sell to parents throughout the school. We then held a debate: the topic was ‘Is Space Exploration a waste of money?’ Pupils researched facts and figures to support their arguments. Above right, the photograph shows Kasandra Giermak opening the debate. Finally, we were extremely lucky to round off our space topic with a skype call to Professor Carol Norberg, senior lecturer at the Department for Physics at Institutet för Rymdfysik, Rymdcampus, Kiruna. Professor

Norberg went to Spalding High School with our Headteacher Mrs Julie Miles and was really pleased to renew the link with Mrs Miles and our school. She is an expert in the field of human spaceflight and has carried out research into Mars. Professor Norberg was able to answer many of the questions we still had about Space. Some of the class may now consider a career in Science and even in Space exploration. We thoroughly enjoyed our live chat...all the way from Sweden! Foundation stage pupils are planting herbs and garden plants. They know they need to care for the plants, watering them and protecting them from frost. They will also watch out for caterpillars and aphids. Upper School pupils (years 1 to 6) are growing potatoes, strawberries and raspberries this year. They have also planted a variety of flowering plants to bring colour to the garden. Finally, year 5 and 6 pupils worked with parents to decorate our gardening shed. They drew flowers and animals on the shed and painted them with enamel paints. The garden now looks ready for the 80th Birthday of our Principal, Mrs Sheila Page, in July.

Riverside Training Success Story
r e e r a I c r u o y n with us!
’m fortunate that my business is one where we celebrate many positive outcomes and success stories. We have more than 20 years’ experience offering independent courses and qualifications in childcare, management, team leading, customer service and business administration. And it’s a pleasure to work with many different clients including childcare workers, teaching assistants, administration staff and managers in the workplace. We are extremely proud of all our learners and what they achieve with us. And we really appreciate it when they are keen to talk about the ways in which our specialist training company has helped them achieve their goals and aspirations. Here Craig Turner, one of our recent graduates, talks about his career path and shares his experiences of our company. “After leaving sixth form I worked parttime in Boston and then went working and travelling in New Zealand. When I returned to the UK I started off looking for a job. I tried my luck in a nursery, ended up loving it, and decided that was the career
I wanted to pursue. I contacted Riverside Training for guidance about starting my career in childcare and was advised to start with Cache Level 2 Children and Young People’s Workforce and I also to take my pediatric First Aid qualification. They also helped me find a nursery that would support my training.” “I started out as a nursery bank staff member. This setting offered me the Cache Level 2 Children and Young People’s Workforce Apprenticeship and, after I completed the qualification, I decided to move on to my Level 3. I grew more

intrigued about the career pathway and Riverside Training discussed options with me. I discovered I could go onto higher education to further my career, so I worked hard to make sure I could secure a place at university.” “Riverside Training was a huge support with advice and training and encouraged me to succeed. They not only helped me to develop as a childcare professional, but also as a person. Everyone I dealt with was friendly and extremely competent. The team will help you hit your targets and get you to where you want to be. The support they offer is unbelievable and they are always there to point you in the right direction. I started a BA in Play-work and Child Development at Leeds Beckett University in September and am hoping to become a play therapist when I complete my degree.” We are delighted Craig found that our services not only met, but exceeded, his expectations and wish him well with his university studies and every success in the future. Hopefully Craig’s story will inspire you to consider training with us.

Boston Bike Night
T
housands of people are expected to visit Boston Bike Night on the evening of Thursday July 6th, it is undoubtedly the largest motorcycle event in South Lincolnshire, and has grown to encompass the whole of the town centre, offering something for bike enthusiasts, and general public alike. The event which will see riders of motorcycles, scooters, trikes & sidecars from all over the country descend upon Boston’s Town Centre from the Bargate End car parks, Pescod Square through to the far end of the Market Place, filling it with a spectacular array of machinery, including all types’ makes and models, from sports bikes, tourers, to classic varieties. Not only is the event a Mecca for riders and fans of motorcycles, it is also a great family night out. Last year it was estimated that more than 2500 Bikes, and over 3000 people were
visiting the Bike Night at any one time, to a total of probably of more than 8000. This is obviously a great boost for those businesses which are open within the town centre. The event started twenty one years ago, when a group of Boston motorcycle Riders Association members decided to organise a meet up of friends and associates from other motorcycle clubs in the centre of Boston. The organisers from that time to now have had a simple philosophy, that the evening should be free to all who attend, that the event should be about motorcycles and, it will never be about profit. The event is now organised by the Boston Bike Night Committee, a who are a group of Boston Motorcycle Riders, who even with the increase in numbers attending the event over the years and the increase in legislative requirements, still hold to the founding principles of the original event. This year will see the first motorcycle show within the event, this will be a show of classic motorcycles organised by two well known members of the Poachers section of the National AJS and Matchless
motorcycle club. The event will be open to all comers, there will be classes covering American, British and European machines up to 1985 and Japanese machines to 1990 with a class for customs and special of any age. Details of the show can be found on the Boston bike night website. So if you have something special or interesting tucked away in the corner of the garage, polish it up and bring it along, who knows you may even win a trophy. There is only one stipulation for this show and that is that you ride your pride and joy to the event.
“Not only is the event a Mecca for riders and fans of motorcycles, it is also a great family night out.”
The Boston Bike Night Committee puts on this event for fun, makes no profit from and has always felt that this event should be free of charge to all who attend. As with all events of this type, there is always a need for help and support, so if you are able to offer any help, perhaps help with the parking, please contact the organisers through the contacts to be found on the Boston bike night website or facebook. Details of the event can be found on the internet at HYPERLINK “http:// bostonbikenight.co.uk/”http://bostonbikenight.co.uk and on facebook. 16 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk

Family life
Get Holiday Ready sunscreen.it is recommend to use at the very minimum sunscreens with at least an SPF of 15, which blocks 93 percent of UVB rays. Higher SPFs provide even greater protection, but only to a certain point: SPF 30 blocks 97 percent of UVB and SPF 50+ (the maximum SPF you’ll find on sunscreen labels)
Family Life Sun Safety for Kids Just one blistering sunburn in childhood can double your little one’s lifetime risk of melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. Young, sensitive skin is especially vulnerable to damaging rays, so protect your child by being sun-care savvy. What does SPF stand for? Is a higher number more effective?
An SPF, or sun protection factor, indicates a sunscreen’s effectiveness at preventing sunburn. “If your child’s skin reddens in 10 minutes without sunscreen, SPF 15 multiplies that time (10 minutes) by 15, meaning she’d be protected from sunburn for approximately 150 minutes or 2 1/2 hours. Of course, this depends on an adequate application of
Home security tips for the holidays Holidays are a time to kick back your feet and let down your hair but the countdown can be quite stressful especially when you need to think about packing for the kids, providing for the pets and making sure your home is properly secure before you hit the road to your destination. Exterior check Take a walk around your property to inspect fences, walls and gates checking for any evidence of damage or tampering that could allow intruders access to the property. Post Before you go away arrange for a neighbour to collect any mail and newspaper deliveries as nothing shouts “empty house” to criminals louder than an overflowing mailbox. Neighbour to neighbour Ask your neighbour to keep an eye on
your property while you are away and visa versa. You could also perhaps offer your driveway as extra parking for them! Light up Research has shown that burglars do not favour breaking into a well-lit property, so make sure that you have sufficient outdoor lighting that switches on at night as well as timers on lights in the property. Lock up Remember to make sure all windows and doors are securely closed and locked before you leave and don’t forget to double check the windows in children’s bedrooms and bathrooms. Secure outbuildings Outbuildings are often an extension of your home, so there is yet more property to steal from. Often these buildings don’t generally have the best security, ensure rusty locks are replaced and doors locked.
Packing Tips If you’re still struggling to cram all those essential just-in-case outfits into your bag, here are some of the best packing tips to make your holiday a little easier. Reduce by a third We’ve all done it - packed 4 pairs of shorts and then only worn one pair all holiday. Don’t make the cardinal sin of over-packing. Lay all of your clothes on the bed and be ruthless - aim to get rid of a third. Breathing room This isn’t a pre-flight meditation technique we’re talking about your case. There’s no denying that when you return you’ll be packing some serious souvenirs for your friends and family - just leave enough room! Towel on top What’s the first thing everyone wants to do when they get to the hotel? Go to the beach, of course! Make life easier by packing your towel last - not only will it mean a quick turnaround from landing to lounger, but it will also cover any loose clothing in your case. Win-win! Use a vacuum pack They’re cheap to buy and don’t actually need a vacuum - just roll the air out. They keep all of your clothes packed neatly together and protect them from any spillages. Beware, your clothes may appear to shrink but they’ll still weigh the same. Clever accessorizing A few well-chosen accessories, rather than entire extra outfits, will keep you prepared for any unexpected holiday occasions. Think fancy flipflops, a beautiful scarf or tie, a smart belt or some fashion jewellery to give your outfit some oomph.
Top Tip: Wear your heavy items! How many clothes can you wear at once? On a serious note, make sure you wear your heaviest boots and pack your lightest flip flops. Not only will you save space in your case, you’ll also save on baggage allowance.

They started on 4th Jan and can really see improved fitness and energy levels and a more toned physique. It’s simple to follow with delicious recipes and fitness videos. I feel great releasing all those happy hormones at the start of the day! Before F15 I had never really been into regular exercise routines, preferring to be outdoors walking, but these are great and so easy to integrate into daily life. Forever is the world’s number one

National Fish & Chip Day: 2 June 2017
F
ollowing the resounding success of last year’s inaugural National Fish and Chip Day, NEODA is delighted to announce that Fish & Chip lovers across the UK are coming together again to celebrate the nation’s favourite dish on Friday, 2nd June 2017. But it’s not just about one day, it’s about supporting a British tradition all year round and keeping our independent fish and chip shops open. National Fish & Chip Day is about giving fish and chips the recognition it deserves and helping to secure its position as the nation’s favourite dish. The event,
which will take place on the first Friday in June every year, already has the backing of key players in the industry. The national event is once again being championed by trade organisation, The National Edible Oil Distributors’ Association, who represent packers and distributors of oils and fats in the UK. NEODA President, Andrew Marriott, comments, “National Fish and Chip Day celebrates the stars who work hard to bring Brits their favourite traditional takeaway. We want to bring the whole industry together to celebrate and showcase the great British institution that is fish and chips.”
“To help build support in anticipation for the event, we are urging people to start tweeting with the hashtag #NationalFishandChipDay.” Visit www.nationalfishandchipday.org.uk to find out more.
Fish & Chip Facts!
• Fish and chips make a balanced, nutritious meal. They are a valuable source of protein, fibre, iron and vitamins. • Fish and chips were first served together as a dish around 1860 - although their origin is contested. In London, the Malin family claims to be first, as do the Lee family in Manchester. • Fish and chips were served in newspaper until the 1980s. • British consumers eat some 382 million portions of fish and chips every year. That’s six servings for every man, woman and child.
• Annual spend on fish and chips in the UK is in the region of a staggering £1.2 billion! • During the Second World War Winston Churchill recognised the crucial role of fish and chips, referring to them as “good companions”. • Fish and chips were two of the few foods not subject to rationing because the government feared the dish was so embedded in the nation’s culture that any limit would damage morale. • Fish and chips played a part in the D-Day Landings - British soldiers identified each other by crying out ‘fish’ and waiting for the response of ‘chips’. • There are currently approximately 10,500 specialist fish and chip shops in the UK. • These dramatically outnumber other fast food outlets.
• There is a long tradition of funny chip shop names – our favourites are The Cod’s Scallops and mobile fish and chip shop Star Chip Enterprise. • Fish and chips appear in Charles Dickens’ “A Tale Of Two Cities”. • The record number of fish and chip portions sold in one day is 12,406 at Marini’s in Glasgow. The record was set in 1999. • The word batter comes from the French word battre, which means to beat - in reference to whisking the flour and water together. • The world’s largest portion of fish and chip’s was made by Fish & Chips @ London Road in Enfield, London, on July 2012. The mammoth portion of Halibut and chips weighed in at 47kg. • The World Record holders for the fastest portion of chips served from scratch belongs to Henley’s Fish & Chip Shop in Wivenhoe, Colchester, Essex. They took a raw potato, peeled it, chipped it, cooked to perfection and served up in an amazing 222 seconds! • The Guinness World Record for wrapping chips is held by Steph Celik of Blue Whale Fish & Chip Shop in Maltby, South Yorkshire. Beating a previous record by two seconds in 2012, speedy Steph wrapped up five 350g portions of chips, with added salt and vinegar, in just 58 seconds.

B
uying a new window or door can be tricky, let alone choosing an installation company. But double glazing can last for decades, so it is important to make sure you select a product that will suit your home and a bona fide company that will do the job right. Before you make your final decision, put your company to the test. Here are 10 questions you should ask your installation company before signing up for your new windows and doors to make sure they’re the perfect match: Do you have the style, material or colour I want? Good quality uPVC windows can last over 30 years and aluminium a couple of decades longer, so it is vital to choose a product you like. Don’t settle – you’re going to have to love your new windows and doors for many years to come. Can I custom-make my new windows and doors? All good installers order or manufacture your new double glazing product to your home’s exact measurements. This means that there may be a small wait for your windows or doors to be installed, because they’re busy being made for you personally.
and case studies they can provide, the better. Also, check the company’s credit rating to get an idea of how reliable a business they are. Can I get a feel for my new windows and doors? It’s hard sometimes to make a final decision based on images and colour swatches in catalogues. It would be a lot easier to make a decision if you could see the final result before installation. Check whether your chosen double glazing company has a showroom – this is a fantastic opportunity to see the products close up and get a much clearer idea about how the style, colour and material will suit your property. Is my deposit protected? As well as checking a company’s background, it’s important to make sure that your deposit is protected. Reliable installers should offer an Insurance Backed Guarantee – this guarantees your deposit is safe should anything happen to the company before installation begins. This guarantee also ensures the quality of the installation for 10 years after completion. Are your products CE marked? CE marking is an obligatory quality standard meaning that the products are uniform and can be
sold throughout Europe. All windows and doors must carry this mark, but unfortunately cheap replicas still flood the market. Ask your installer before sealing the deal and look for the CE logo before installation (it should be on the frame and the glass units). What happens if I need help after the installation? Say you have a question about how to operate or maintain your new windows – can you get back in touch with your installer or are they nowhere to be found?
“Before you ma your final d ke ecis put your co ion, mpany to the test.”
What do you specialise in? There is a lot of choice out there when searching for a double glazing company. Many offer similar product ranges – the trick is to discover which companies are experts in their field. How much experience do you have? Be wary of any company that can’t provide you with a detailed history or profile of their experience. New companies aren’t necessarily bad, but the more testimonials www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON | 23

New 2017 Ford Grand C-Max PROS ‘N’ CONS ➠ Practical ➠ Comfortablee ➠ Efficient ➠ Performance ➠ Perceived image
4 4 4 4 8
FAST FACTS (ST-Line 1.5T Eco 182PS AWD AUTO – as tested)
F
ord’s Grand C-Max is a car designed to carry up to seven people safely and comfortably. It’s got all the things that make life easier. Things such as sliding rear doors that mean the children can get in or out without bashing the doors on walls or other cars. What’s more, the Grand C-Max is roomy inside, with a smart set-up that enables the centre chair in the second row to fold beneath one of the other seats, leaving a space to walk through. I should add, the Grand C-Max Ford loaned me was the Titanium X 2.0 TDCi 150PS Powershift. Basically, I was handed the top of the range version - the one with all the bells and whistles. However, whether you get the entry level or the top level Grand C-Max, its function is the same – it’s a car that’ll hold lots of people. Granted, the third row of seats are tucked away for most of the time in the boot floor, and even though they’re only for kids, they’re still very handy. There’s also a ‘normal’ Ford C-Max, which is a spacious five-seater - so don’t feel you must go for the ‘Grand’ version. On test, I didn’t need to use the third row all that much, so the two spare seats often remained where they were. This was no bad thing, as without the third tier of seats in operation, the boot stays big. With the seats up, the load area is only good for about three bags of shopping, but with them down, you can knock yourself out filling it up. Not literally, you understand. Standard equipment on the Ford Grand C-Max is generous. It includes Ford’s Quickclear windscreen, sports-style seats, air conditioning and DAB radio. Upgrade to the flagship Titanium X trim and you get a panoramic sunroof, bi-xenon
headlights, a partial leather interior, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, rear parking sensors, and keyless start and entry. There’s also Ford’s Sync 3 infotainment system, with an easy-to-read eight-inch touchscreen. But the best thing is that the Grand C-Max is a surprisingly good drive. I say ‘surprising’ because I was a man who used to dislike MPVs because of their apparent dearth of dynamism. The 2.0 TDCi 150PS Powershift model is smooth and has lots of low down shove. It works particularly well with the sixspeed automatic transmission. In fact, it doesn’t drive like a bus – it behaves just like a decent 2.0 litre turbo diesel car should do. What’s more, it holds the road well, feeling planted on motorways and through twisty sections of tarmac. It’s also got a cheeky punch to it, with the Titanium X 2.0 TDCi 150PS Powershift variant able to do 0-62mph in 10.7 seconds. It’s efficient, too, consistently doing mid to late 40s real-world mpg.
➠ Max speed: 124 mph ➠ 0-62 mph: 10.7 secs ➠ Combined mpg: 56.5 ➠ Engine layout: 1997cc 4-cylinder turbo diesel ➠ Max. power (PS): 150 ➠ CO2: 129 g/km
Price: £28,865
So, I’ve got to say, as a dad-of-three, I’m impressed. In fact, I’m seriously considering buying the Ford Grand C-Max now I’ve lived with it for a while. I just might not be able to dig deep enough for the flagship version. First Drive Review by Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist Twitter: @carwriteups
