Here we are at the beginning of Summer and all the anticipation for what the weather will be like is building up. May is always an exciting month locally, we have all the flower festivals at the churches as well as the two bank holidays, book-ending the month. What do you do the make the most of the bank holidays? For me I pack up the car and head to the seaside – there’s nothing better than a sea breeze, sand between your toes and a bag of fish and chips to finish the day. In this issue we are trying to inspire you to get at one with the outdoors and go camping! See our guide on page 27. With sunshine come gardening and we are hoping to get the green fingered amongst you out into the garden and growing your own, find out more on page 32. If you fancy going further afield this month why not visit Wodhall Spa or Skegness? We have more information on both towns in this issue. You may remember last month that I told you about my wedding plans? This month my focus has been on boxes, yes boxes as we have moved house. They say moving house, organising weddings and setting up a business can be some of the most stressful things to do in life and I am packing all three into 12 months, roll on June and my holiday! Our new home needs a few projects and I am pleased to be supporting local tradesmen with the work, I will keep you updated on my progress. If you would like to get in touch then please email editor@simplyspalding.co.uk or call me on 0845 676 9295; we always appreciate your feedback and questions.

Please help the local community stay vibrant by supporting local businesses - and don’t forget to mention SIMPLY BOSTON when calling or buying a product from an advertiser you have seen in the magazine! Without the loyalty of our advertisers we would not be able to deliver such a great magazine to you every month.

Councillors call for town centre drinks ban Mark Simmonds Visits Boston Manufacturer

- MP for Boston & Skegness Takes a Factory Tour Europe’s leading producer of remanufactured ink and toner cartridges, Boston based company, Dynamic Cassette International (DCi), was this week delighted to receive a visit from Boston and Skegness MP, Mr Mark Simmonds. On Thursday 27th March, Mark visited DCi’s impressive 32000m2 purpose built site at Marsh Lane Industrial Estate. Touring the entire factory, Mark saw how first-hand how every process is managed at the company’s site in Boston: from research and development, manufacturing and ink formulation, to packaging design and production. Importantly, Mark spent some time with DCi’s collection’s arm, The Recycling Factory (TRF), understanding how the company works with charities and businesses to collect and recycle over 8 million empty ink, laser toner cartridges and mobile phones each year which would otherwise go to landfill. Paul Needham, Operations Manager for DCi, explains what a visit from the company’s local MP means to DCi: ‘As an independent British manufacturer we are extremely proud of our achievements and contribution to the local community. With over 300 full-time staff, we are proud to offer local people long-term employment and career prospects. We are delighted that Mark wanted to visit our factory, seeing how we work and discussing our plans for expansion and the issues we face for future development.’ DCi has the current capacity to produce in excess of 2.5 million recycled ink cartridges and 100,000 toners per month, sold under their leading Jet Tec brand. Since its inception in 2005, TRF has raised in excess of £3.3 million for charities worldwide.

A complete ban on drinking all alcohol in the town centre and Central Park may now be the only solution to disgusting anti-social behaviour. That’s the opinion of councillors who say they are at their wit’s end. Responding to a recent flurry of complaints about drunkenness and urinating in public Cllr Yvonne Gunter, portfolio holder for parks and open spaces, said: “We have tried everything else – polite notices, warning notices, threats, face-to-face confrontation, reduction of corners they can hide away in, lowering the height of shrubs – but nothing has worked. I am at my wit’s end. “People are right to complain, but I really do think the only solution will be to completely ban drinking alcohol in the town centre and the park. If it’s illegal then firmer action can be taken against those who choose to flout the law.” Ward councillors Carol Taylor

and Mary Wright agreed. Cllr Taylor said: “If it means people cannot then enjoy a bottle with a picnic lunch in the park than that will have to be a price worth paying to stop these disgusting activities. The sad fact is that this kind of antisocial behaviour is committed by people who are drunk and have full bladders. It is also sad that they have nothing better to do with themselves than consume vast quantities of alcohol in public.” Cllr Mary Wright added: “It cannot be said that there are not public toilets available. There are public toilets immediately outside the park gates but people in drink and with full bladders urinate anywhere they please, in broad daylight.” The current Drinking in Public Places Order (DPPO), introduced to help control drinking of alcohol in public places in certain circumstances, is being repealed. It never was a ban and was

related to alcohol consumption in connection with anti-social behaviour. New rules are being introduced and Boston Borough Council is consulting in order to plot a way forwards. Cllr Gunter said it was not really the job of the council’s parks staff to act as police, although they did confront people behaving indecently and were often met with abuse and threats of violence for their trouble. She said they really cared about the park and it was disheartening for them to arrive for work in the morning to have to clear up overnight debris left behind by those who climbed the fence and got in after the gates had been locked at the end of the day. Inspector Jim Manning, Boston Community Policing Inspector, said: “Until a decision is taken to replace the DPPO we will continue to enforce it and dedicate patrols to it during the warmer months and ensure that it is robustly enforced.”

Boston & Spalding Slimmers celebrate 23 groups of big-hearted slimmers from Boston & Spalding are celebrating losing a huge amount of weight between them and raising money as part of a sponsored slim for various local causes Members of these Slimming World groups have taken part in a national campaign called Slim for Good running across all 11,000 Slimming World groups in the UK and Ireland. The aim of the six week drive, which kicked off on February 24th, was to help people to lose weight and improve their health while raising money for a good cause in their local area. Jenny Gardner who manage’s the team of Consultants of these groups says the Slim for Good campaign gave all members of the group an added incentive to achieve their weight-loss dreams: At Slimming World we pride ourselves on the care and support we give each other to lose weight – we’re known as the club with the big heart – so when members started talking about raising money for local community causes and what we could all do together, there really was no stopping us. I’m so proud of what the members in the groups have achieved during the last six weeks.”

Jenny hopes all the group’s successes will inspire other people in the local community to lose weight and improve their health too. S/he says: “Six weeks doesn’t sound like a long time, but in that period I’ve seen so many changes, people losing weight, feeling happier and healthier than ever, and their confidence increasing. And the really great thing is that as they’ve lost weight the Slimming World way, they’ve achieved all this without ever going hungry or feeling deprived.” Anyone wanting to join any of the local groups are welcome to come along or they can call Jenny on 01205 310173 for more information.

Willoughby Road allotments Gold again for Boston High School After months of preparation, Boston College’s annual sporting competition ‘The Games’, came to a head and saw the top 40 local young sporting superstars battle it out for the Grand Champion title. ‘The Games’ is an inter-school sporting competition involving 10 secondary schools from around the county competing against each other in a variety of practical and theory based sporting activities. The top 2 boys and 2 girls from each school were determined at heats back in December last year, and these finalists then came together to compete for individual titles as well as the coveted ‘Target Team Award’, awarded to the overall winning school. As the final was held at the recently refurbished Peter Paine Performance Centre, theory based sporting activities were introduced taking place in the College’s sport science lads, alongside the more traditional practical sporting activities. The event also utilised the centres new gym for chest presses, and sports hall for speed races. Boston College Sport students were coaching the visiting students earning them accredited sports certification towards their course and valuable experience that they can use in their future careers. Level 3 Sports Student Georgina Haslam said, “Being a Games leader is fun. I’ve meet loads of new people and it has definitely helped improve my confidence.” After an action packed day, the scores were counted up and the big announcement of who was taking home the title was made. For an amazing fourth year running ‘The Target Team Award’ was presented at Boston High School. Collecting the winning trophy from Martyn Bunce, Assistant Manager of Boston United Football Club, were team members Oliver Balsom, Frances Nuttell and Laura Hardy To top off a great day of competitive sports, the students also got the chance to have their selfie with the Barclays Premier League Trophy, which was visiting Peter Paine as a way of Barclays saying thank-you for the centre being a ‘Barclays Space for Sports’.

With plots now cleared and dug and everything looking clean and tidy Willoughby Road allotment holders invited children to help them prepare for National Gardening Week by helping set up a wild flower bed. Paul Collingwood and Angela Evans invited pupils from Boston West Academy to scatter wildflower and poppy seeds to also mark the centenary of the First World War. They were joined by Cllr Yvonne Gunter, Boston Borough Council’s portfolio holder for parks and open spaces and Alison Fairman, Chairman of Boston in Bloom steering committee. The patch was cleared by Angela, who decided to create this area for NGW (April 14 to 20 ) and to promote Britain in Bloom in association with the Royal Horticultural Society’s 50th anniversary. The allotment holders are focusing on transforming areas of derelict land into

green spaces. Paul said that during the growing season there is often a surplus amount of produce which the allotment holders donate to the Centenary Church for their meals and also The Salvation Army. If you would like to contact Peter with a specific question, please email info@simplyboston.co.uk

In every issue, Peter Bedford, The leader of Boston Borough Council, gives you an insight as to what is happening in and around Boston The Government minister tasked with managing flooding in Somerset has been to Lincolnshire to take back with him an example of best practise. Owen Patterson MP, Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs attended a meeting of the Lincolnshire Flood Risk and Drainage Management Partnership Framework, upon which I represent Boston Borough Council. This is a unique organisation which involves all the county agencies in joined-up thinking to deal with issues around fluvial and sea flooding and drainage in general. It is the only group of its kind in the country and we are recognised as having some expertise because of the low-lying geography of large parts of Lincolnshire, especially the Fens, where parts are below sea level and there is land reclaimed from the sea where constant controls ensure these areas remain dry. The internal drainage boards, in particular, together with the Environment Agency, are important partners in protecting residential and commercial areas as well as agricultural areas which have national food security importance. It is the second time recently that Mr Patterson has been to Lincolnshire. He was in Boston just after the December floods when I accompanied him on a tour of the flood-hit areas. He was very complimentary then about the way in which the borough council was dealing with the clean-up operation and now he has returned to the issues in Somerset having seen how our partnership of all councils, drainage boards, the EA, the water companies and Natural England, led by Lincolnshire County Council, works successfully together. Two recent events spell good financial news for the borough. More cash for Boston to cope with the flood has been pledged from the Government and cash from the sale of the Assembly Rooms will soon be converted into bricks and mortar – an investment which will save money. Boston Borough Council is to receive another £205,000 from Government, bringing the total now made available to help local people affected by the December flood to more than £4 million – the most awarded to any flood-affected area in the country. The awards to Boston followed a very constructive meeting that I, the council’s chief executive and MP Mark Simmonds had with Brandon Lewis MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for

Communities and Local Government. It reflects quite rightly the numbers of residential and business properties affected by the flood of December 5. The council is now putting together a special team to administer the different flood funds being made available to it by the Government in order that the money can be put to best use as quickly as possible. The council had already been informed by Government that it would receive £320,000 to help businesses. Now a further £200,000 has been earmarked for Boston to administer business support funding for businesses which have suffered significant loss of trade because of the flood. The council has already written to all businesses affected by the flood so they can be considered for business rates relief. If you are a business in the borough impacted by the flood and have not received a letter and application form from the council about this please do not delay. Contact Business Rates on 01205 314413 for an application form. All 590 flood affected homes and 105 businesses will also qualify for up to £5,000 each to help pay for work to make properties more flood resistant. There will also be £397,000 to help with the cost of recovery from flood damage Residents whose homes were flooded are also now being considered by the council for eligibility for council tax relief. We also gained, at the meeting with Brandon Lewis, agreement for talks with the Office for National Statistics to discuss Boston’s growing population. A more accurate assessment of our population is key to increased funding from Government for services we provide. Planning permission has now been granted for the council’s new depot at St John’s Lorry Park. This will see our environmental services operation, mainly refuse collection, move from our rented depot in Fen Road to land we own. We will be using the funds raised from the sale of the Assembly Rooms to develop our new depot, generating annual full-year savings of more than £100,000. The Assembly Rooms were subsidised when in council ownership and so using money from the sale of a venture which cost us to finance a venture which will save substantial amounts every year has to make good sense. Construction work will begin early in April with an expected completion in June, 2014. Work is underway to transform the way customer care is provided for depot activities including refuse, street cleansing and grounds maintenance.

The Shopkeeper’s Daughter by Lily Baxter

The Child’s Elephant by Rachel Campbell-Johnston

Family saga books have long been popular with library customers and Lily Baxter’s The Shopkeeper’s Daughter carries on that long tradition. It is 1944 and Ginnie Travis is working in her father’s furniture store in East London when bombing raids worsen and she is sent with her sister Shirley to stay with an aunt in Shropshire. There Ginnie embarks on a doomed love affair and eventually has to fight her hardest to save all she holds near and dear. Lily Baxter has written a number of books set in World War II and all of them have feisty women leading characters. This is a book to enjoy and remember.

Voting in the Lincolnshire Young People’s Book Awards carries on this month with a short list of 10 exciting and enthralling titles in the 9 to 11year and 12 to 14 year categories. The Child’s Elephant is one of the chosen books in the 12-14 year category making it suitable for young teenagers. When a baby elephant is orphaned on the African savannah, Bat a young herdsboy takes her home and cares for her. His family realise she cannot stay with them as the call of the wild will always be strong but they cannot realise what an important role she will play in Bat’s life. This is a grown up story of life in a dangerous region. If you wish to read the shortlisted books and vote for your favourite, ask at the library or go to the library website www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/libraries

Advice

- KNOW s y a d i l your rights Ho by Stuart Hellon

Spring is here at last! The sun is shining (maybe!), birds are tweeting, lambs are skipping … and Bank Holiday season is here again! There are four bank holidays during April and May. Many working people are confused about their holiday entitlement, so here are the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions.

My employer wants me to work on Bank Holidays. Doesn’t the law say that he has to give me a day off? Sorry, no. Although many workers are given time off work on bank and public holidays, your employer is not required by law to allow you time off on these days.

My boss said I can have the day off but he won’t pay me. Is this right? You do not automatically have the right to paid time off on a Bank Holiday, but you should check your contract of employment. If your contract says you have the right to time off work on bank and public holidays it should also say whether this time off will be paid or not.

So how much holiday can I have? Although there are some exceptions, most workers have the right to take 5.6 weeks’ paid holiday from work. This is called statutory holiday.

To work out how many days paid statutory holiday you can take a year, you need to multiply 5.6 by the number of days you work in a week. For example: • if you work a five-day week, you are entitled to 28 days’ paid holiday a year (5.6 X 5). • if you work 2.5 days a week, you are entitled to 14 days’ paid holiday a year (5.6 X 2.5). The maximum amount of statutory paid holiday you can be entitled to is 28 days in one leave year. This applies even if you work more than five days a week.

If I have a paid day off on a Bank Holiday does this use up some of my holiday entitlement? If your employer gives you bank or public holidays off, they will count towards your statutory holiday unless your employment contract specifically says that you get bank or public holidays on top of your statutory holiday. If you have a problem with holiday pay or anything else to do with your employment, you can get advice from Boston Citizens Advice Bureau using the details below. You can also contact the Pay and Work Rights Helpline on 0800 917 2368. This service is free and confidential and advice is available in over 100 languages.

I

am pleased to report that Boston in this period had one of the highest detection rates in the whole force showing that we detected 39.2% of all crimes reported to us. This high level of detection is a credit the all the Boston officers who work hard and who focus on the crimes and the offenders that do the most harm. This ethos is best demonstrated by the reduction in house burglaries of 25% in the last year and a detection rate of 55% for all violent crime. This week we will be re- launching Operation Dakota which is an initiative targeting anti-social behaviour caused by drinking in the street. Under the powers of the Designated Public Place Order (DPPO) anybody who is drinking in the street and displaying, or likely to display anti-social behaviour can be ordered by a Police Officer to surrender their alcohol and if they fail to do so, they commit an offence for which they can be arrested. This is not an outright ban on drinking in the street! A person may drink in the street providing they do not act or are not likely to act in an antisocial way. I know there are many people in the town who would like this to be an outright ban and so I am working with the council to bring in new legislation that would achieve this. The government

are replacing the DPPO with new legislation called a Community Protection Order which should come into law later on this year. At this stage the Borough Council have put this out to public consultation so you can all have your say on whether this legislation should be brought in. I have recently had talks with representative from the Lithuanian and Latvian community and was impressed by their commitment to the town and their communities. My team and I will be looking at ways to work with other agencies to combat the exploitation that people from these communities experience from unscrupulous employers, gang masters and landlords. We have also launched Operation Cyclone which is a crackdown on theft of pedal cycles which sees officers actively stopping and checking suspicious person on pedal cycles. Recently one of my officers stopped a person on a bike and checks revealed that it had been stolen from a burglary in the town and this month alone we have returned six stolen bicycles to their rightful owners. The May Fair is due in the next few weeks and plans are in place to ensure it passes off peacefully and without incident so it can be enjoyed by all who attend it. So I hope in my next article I will be able write about the great success we all hope it to be.

“This week we will be re- launching Operation Dakota which is an initiative targeting anti-social behaviour caused by drinking in the street.”

Festival of Learning

2014 Festival of Learning ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

T

The 2014 Festival of Learning invites individuals, families, communities and workplaces to celebrate and take part in learning

here are many opportunities for you to discover something new and celebrate the transformational power of learning. Thousands of organisations will be holding events demonstrating the learning opportunities that they provide, attracting new learners and inspiring adults to discover how learning can transform lives. Throughout May and June, in the run up to Adult Learners’ Week, events will be taking place both locally and nationally to inspire you to try something new. We detail some of these below.

than 80,000 young people attended to be inspired by opportunities available to them in further education, skills and Apprenticeships. The Edge Foundation is a premier sponsor alongside City & Guilds and Premier Colleges.

Museums at Night VQ (Vocational Qualifications) Day VQ Day celebrates vocational achievement and the benefits of practical, technical and vocational learning, This year, VQ Day is 4th June. Funding available for schools, colleges and learning providers to help celebrate vocational learning. The Edge Foundation is joining forces with The Skills Show to help students understand more about vocational qualifications and get the edge for their future careers. Education providers will be holding ‘Have a Go’ activities. These will be hands-on ‘bite-size’ tasters of a skill which give an introduction to possible careers that students might not have previously considered. Schools, colleges and learning providers will be holding events on and around VQ Day. There will also be the opportunity to take part in The Skills Show local programme, also taking place across the UK. Jan Hodges, CEO of the Edge Foundation: “VQ Day is about celebrating learning by doing and there is no better way to see this in practice than within the colleges, schools and learning providers that champion it”. The Skills Show inspires young people about vocational education, skills and careers through a series of interactive events. The main event takes place at Birmingham’s NEC from 13th-15th November and last year more 14 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON

Learning at Work Week 19th-25th May 2014 Learning at Work Week is an annual awareness campaign organised by the Campaign for Learning since 1999. It aims to put the spotlight on the importance and benefits of learning and development. Each year, thousands of organisations take part in the Week and run vibrant campaigns and activities which engage employees across their businesses in development and promote positive messages about learning. Many companies use the Week as a catalyst for change providing an opportunity to ‘rebrand’ or refresh learning and development, reinforcing the organisation’s commitment to staff development and celebrating learning that takes place all year round. The activities that companies run range from non-work related and interest-led activities through award ceremonies to business focused sessions. Learning at Work Week offers an opportunity to promote and deliver these in a way that is fresh, exciting and engaging. You can take part in LAW Week as a learner, workplace, learning provider, ULR or learning champion. Last year, thousands of organisations took part. Companies that have taken part in previous years include WH Smith, Warburtons, American Express, Prudential and BSkyB.

Museums at Night, which explodes into life from 15th-17th May, is an annual UK-wide festival which seeks to encourage visitors into museums, galleries and heritage sites by throwing their doors open after hours and putting on special evening events. There really is something for everyone here as events held at museums up and down the country are varied and not necessarily tied to what the museums are best known for.

Past events have included: A recreated air battle Build a beehive Make a clay or mosaic tile, or patchwork quilt square, for a community project Try Roman skills e.g. writing on wax tablets Go on military manoeuvres after dark with former soldiers Silent disco on light-up dance floor Firing historic guns, cannon and mortars Dissection night / learn surgical suturing / amputations Paranormal investigation Young Chefs challenge Community-made short films projected on to building Nature walks discovering moths and bats / learning to use bat detectors For more information on all of these events please visit www.alw.org.uk

Focus on Skegness

Oh, I do like to be beside the seaside... ❱ BY KATE CHAPMAN

W

Whether you’re looking for a fun day out, a weekend away or summer staycation, Skegness has something for everyone

ith its award-winning sandy beaches, amusements, bars, clubs, theatres and fairground rides there’s no doubt the coastal town is a great destination for young and old - making it one of the most popular in the country. Described by Lonely Planet’s Great Britain guide as ‘everything you could want in a seaside resort’, Skegness has an abundance of holiday accommodation to suit all budgets and needs throughout the summer season and beyond. As well as being the birthplace of Butlins’ holiday camps, the town also has a pier where visitors can enjoy ten-pin bowling and Laserquest plus the Lucky Strike seafront entertainment complex, where there’s indoor crazy golf, restaurants, adventure play area, milkshake bar and more all spread over three floors. While Fantasy Island is Europe’s largest seven day market with 220 stalls indoor and outdoor. The venue also boasts 24 thrill-seeking rides, the Pyramid Family Entertainment Centre plus bars, a food court, Scallywags Showbar, Castaways Bar and a Value for Money Family Carvery. Other landmarks include the Diamond Jubilee Clock Tower, built in 1898-99 to mark Queen Victoria’s Diamond

Jubilee and the Tower Gardens beyond. Skegness holds an annual carnival in August, including a week-long program of events throughout the town, and since summer 2009 it has also been home to a music, art and cultural event - the SO Festival - which coincides with a switch-on of seafront illuminations. The Gibraltar Point Nature Reserve lies two miles south of Skegness town centre and is a great place to see Lincolnshire’s wild coast. Made up of 430 hectares of sandy and muddy seashores, sand dunes, saltmarshes and freshwater habitats it is home to variety of wildlife, making it a tranquil place to unwind.

Skegness’ 1,843ft (562m) pier was opened on Whit Monday in 1881 at a cost of £20,840, and at the time was the fourth longest in England. It was T-shaped with a saloon/concert hall located at the pier head, while steamboat trips ran to The Wash and Hunstanton in Norfolk until 1910. In 1919 the structure was damaged by a drifting ship and it took 20 years to raise the money to full y repair it. The pier was closed during World War Two until 1948, with parts of the decking removed as part of anti-invasion policies. Adverse weather saw the structure severely damaged during the 1953 East Coast Floods and again in January 1978. Today Skegness Pier is just 387 feet (118m) long, with no evidence remaining of the old pier head, but nevertheless it remains a major landmark along the beach.

Luxury 4 star accommodation HH H H 5 star on tripadvisor HHHHH

H

Westwood Lakes… a really BIG adventure! ‘Proud of his town’ is a good way to describe Alan Coupland, owner of Westwood Lakes in Wyberton

e’s a man who is passionate about what he does and believes that businesses in Boston should give something back to the community. But we should really start at the beginning. A keen fisherman, Alan’s dream of owning his own fishing lake came true in 2006 and over the following years he has grown the site developed into a successful holiday location with four fishing lakes, 24 luxury holiday lodges, a restaurant and one of Lincolnshire’s biggest Tackle and Bait shops. Originally set up as a small bait and tackle shop to provide a service for guests’ requirements, it has now grown and developed to stock all major brands and has a section especially dedicated to the carp and course angler. The shop is managed by Alex Bates, former England Under 22 international match angler who has a wealth of experience and advice for both the keen match angler and the complete beginner! On top of all the fishing, Westwood Lakes is surrounded by woodland and flower parks, provided by The Boston Woods Trust. It really is the perfect setting for dog walkers, bird watchers, and ramblers. The staff at Westwood are always listening to the feedback their customers provide and as a result Alan has recently expanded by 10 acres and added three new fishing lakes. He explains: “It’s all about demand. They spoke, we listened. We found ourselves in the situation where locals wanted to fish and we just didn’t have the capacity. I firmly believe that local people should be able to turn up and fish on the weekends or whenever and that’s the reason we expanded. We’re at the point now where we should be able to accommodate everyone who comes here hoping to fish.”With a laugh, he adds: “And let’s face it, it’s a foolish man who doesn’t listen to his customers!” Whilst fishing is his bread and butter, Alan is equally as proud of the other facilities the Lakes

“We’re planning to build a social club so there will be a place for people to relax in the evenings.”

A special thanks to Boston Borough Council and the Woodlands Trust for their continued support

For more information you can visit www.westwoodlakes.co.uk or call 01205 724162 but, as Alan will tell you, the best thing to do is pay a visit and experience it for yourself!

Follow the brown tourist signs from the A16 or the A52 past Oldrids Downtown, down West End Road and on to Five House Lane.

has to offer. Firstly it’s a wonderful place to come and walk the dog. The wildlife is so varied and plentiful that people enjoy their hobbies here such as bird watching and oil painting. Add to that the ramblers and soon you find that there are people here for any reason but fishing! You will also find events linked to charities, with Westwood Lakes recently helping to raise money for the Salvation Army, the Butterfly Hospice and the Royal British Legion. It’s all part of the giving back that Alan is so adamant about. With such a rapid expansion is there anything on the cards for the future? “Absolutely!” says Alan. “We’re planning to build a social club so there will be a place for people to relax in the evenings. It will be a fantastic venue for parties and functions. I’m also looking at building a timber outhouse for the dog walkers and we’re hoping to offer a weekly hog-roast at the café and the installation of a pizza oven will allow you to create your own pizza to be cooked while you wait!”

Perhaps the best reason for a non-fishing visit is to try the food and drink at the café. The Fisherman’s Rest is a 48 seater and is open from 8am Monday to Friday and 7.30am at the weekends. If offers a full daytime menu including sandwiches, paninis, jacket potatoes and burgers. Also on sale is a wide range of confectionery, cakes and ice creams along with a selection of hot and cold drinks. There is also a licensed bar. The café has a superb a la carte menu with a wide variety of meals available from the renowned all day breakfast, one of the best in Lincolnshire, to a 24oz Rib Eye steak. Focus on Woodhall Spa

Woodhall’s silver screen ❱ BY KATE CHAPMAN

When it comes to watching the latest blockbusters, if atmosphere and surroundings are as important as the film itself, then Woodhall Spa’s historic cinema is just the ticket “The Kinema is believed to be the only full-time cinema in the UK still using rear projection.”

B

elieved to be the only fully functioning cinema in the UK to employ back projection, The Kinema in the Woods, dates from the 19th century, when it started life as a sports and entertainment pavilion. Set in the grounds of the Victoria Hotel overlooking tennis courts, croquet lawns and gardens, the two site’s association came to an end when the hotel burnt down on Easter Sunday in 1920. Two years later Sir Archibald and Lady Weigall bought the ruins including the sports pavilion and, with the assistance of Captain Carleton Cole Allport, transformed the latter into a cinema which opened to the public on September 11, 1922. The first film to be shown at 7pm that night was supposed to be The Lion Eaters, however the film failed to arrive and a Charlie Chaplin picture was screened instead. Due to the roof trusses in the building, which are too low for an image to be projected from the back of the auditorium, films in Screen One are projected from behind the screen and on to a mirror to flip the image. This is then shown on the back of the screen. The Kinema is believed to be the only fulltime cinema in the UK still using rear projection. Most of the auditorium was fitted with tip-up seats, while the front six rows were deck chairs. These were much sought after and were priced at 1s 6d, with other seats ranging from 1s 3d to 6d. The deck chairs remained in The Kinema until 1953. The first sound projector was installed in 1928 and was replaced 50 years later by two electronically

“In June 1987 a Compton Kinestra organ was installed. It is still situated in Screen One and is played by resident organist Alan Underwood during the intervals...” controlled projectors. Major Allport ran the cinema for more than 50 years, until 1973 when it was taken over by present owner James Green. In June 1987 a Compton Kinestra organ was installed. in chocolate button spikes, a pirate face and last year Nancy insisted the only thing she’d entertain on her cake was, of course, Peppa Pig. Even though he’s only two and can’t really say much yet, there’s no doubting what Peter wanted adorning his - a tractor. I got a bit carried away searching the internet for inspiration before settling on a rather extravagant twotier creation, complete with mud, gates and John Deere markings. My kitchen was covered in icing sugar and my hands looked like they belonged to the Incredible Hulk by the time I finished, but all the effort was worth it just to see the big grin on his face when it was presented to him. It’s by far the best thing I’ve ever made in the kitchen - and something I fear I won’t be able to top, although that hasn’t stopped Nancy putting in her order for a giant fairy come her birthday this summer. Let’s just hope I can pull it off and she gets to have her cake and eat it!

f you’d told me several years ago one day I’d be spending the best part of a whole day trying to carve a tractor out of sponge cake I’m sure I would have laughed in your face. Flash forward to 2014, and that’s exactly how I spent the other Friday - all in readiness for Peter’s second birthday. Some of you might suggest I have too much time on my hands, but ever since the kids came along celebration cakes seem to have escalated out of control. We’ve gone from a plain old Victoria Sponge, filled with lashings of jam and cream with a blob of icing on top, to what can only be described as works of art, involving hours of rolling out rainbow coloured icing and making intricate models from sugar paste. It’s my own doing - I enjoy baking and like trying new techniques but if I’m honest, I’m a little bit worried where it’s all going to end. We’ve had giant hedgehogs covered

Business Focus

The Hog Master of Spalding The Hog Master of Spalding is a family run business set up by Nick and Caroline Richer “We can offer the whole wedding breakfast including cheese boards, teas and coffees as well as full waitress service.”

For further details, sample menus and a booking form please head to www.hogmaster ofspalding.co.uk. Or call us on 01775 711259 or 07715 386613.

S

ince its inception the business has gone from strength to strength so much so that the couple have diversified from just providing hog roasts to meat roasts such as lamb and beef as well sausage

and mash. The rapid growth has also allowed Nick to give up his full time job to concentrate on developing the business. Nick says “we have started to accept a lot more corporate bookings during the week which is something we have never been able to do because of the timing and the fact that we were both working”. These corporate bookings include country fairs as well company functions such as open and away days and golf days. This move into the corporate world does not however affect the family hog roast celebrations which have been the bedrock of The Hog Master of Spalding. Nick and Caroline agree, “It works really well as the corporate functions tend to be during the week which leaves us the weekend to host the family occasions such as christening, birthday and anniversary celebrations. These events are really important to us as this is where much of our new business is generated. Many of our bookings are from guests who we have met at a hog roast. This, coupled with the number of recommendations we receive, has meant we haven’t had to invest in large marketing campaigns which in turn has meant we have been able to keep our prices competitive and in our opinion, very good value for money”. On that note the quality of the meat produced is a key selling factor in that all of the meat is locally sourced and is of a high quality. All of the salads and desserts are homemade including coleslaw, stuffing and apple sauce. This is crucial to the success and the power of the personal recommendations in generating future business. Anyone can empty a jar of shop bought apple sauce into a bowl and present it nicely but for Nick and Caroline this isn’t the reason why their guests recommend the Hog Master for future business. It is the fact that everything is freshly prepared, not forgetting the crunchy crackling which is always a highlight for the guests. In addition to the corporate and family occasions, weddings also feature heavily in the Hog Master’s repertoire. With couples often working to a tight budget, offering a hog roast with all the trimmings is a

good alternative to a hotel and considerably cheaper. Caroline adds, “many of the weddings we have catered for have been in church or village halls and they have been decorated beautifully. In doing so, there is far more freedom in the bride and groom controlling what they want as well as the flexibility around timings for serving of food etc. We can offer the whole wedding breakfast including cheese boards, teas and coffees as well as full waitress service.” The Hog Master of Spalding is certainly busy and getting busier so a word of warning is perhaps to plan ahead and book well in advance to help secure the date you want. As a final note, don’t forget that hog roasts are not all about meat eaters. The Hog Master also caters for vegetarians and vegans and Caroline is currently working on perfecting her home made hummus!

The attention to presentation also extends to the plates and cutlery used. The Hog Master now uses environmentally friendly banana leaf plates and cutlery. The plates themselves are a talking point as each plate has an individual natural pattern and colouring. “We got the idea from a 21st birthday party we catered for. We thought they were so unique and added a real wow factor to the evening. We haven’t looked back so thank you Annabel!” says Caroline. SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk |

Caravan & Camping

Pack Your Sleeping Bag ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

F

There are many advantages to holidaying in the UK in a caravan or camping...

or a start it’s much cheaper that renting a cottage or staying in a hotel for a week. It can be more flexible and also you need not be tied to the same base for the duration of your stay. Booking a holiday cottage usually has to be done well in advance, especially if you have specific requirements and are staying in a popular area, and that means you are committed to a week when there’s then no guarantee of good weather. Using a caravan or going camping, decisions on where and when to holiday can be more spur of the moment and dictated by a good weather forecasts. Scotland may be wonderful while Cornwall is experiencing a monsoon! It is worth noting though that the most popular sites in the country do book up fast. If you are planning a weekend away, first look at the long range forecast for an area and if it’s good for three days, but better somewhere else relatively nearby for the following days, you can simply split the week half and half between the two locations! Having a caravan or a motorhome means you can have all your creature comforts with you. It might be ‘compact and bijou’ compared with a self-catering cottage, but you’ll have a cooker, a toilet, a shower and in some cases central heating and a television! A quick search online, with good places to start being www.thecaravanclub.co.uk and www. campingandcaravanningclub.co.uk, will help you to select a caravan site; some sites will have pitches available the same day. You’ll pay extra for sites with more amenities and also for electric hook up – but it’s worth paying that little bit extra – and it really is a case of a few extra pounds – to ensure your stay is as close to being at home as possible. Camping is obviously more limited, although some sites will enable you to have a power supply should you need it. Before you go camping, make a checklist of the

“Using a caravan or going camping, decisions on where and when to holiday can be more spur of the moment and dictated by a good weather forecasts.”

essentials you need. That will be the tent (of course, but check you have all its poles, pegs and other components or else you could be in trouble!) Then don’t forget your sleeping bags and pillows. You might be ok with a simple roll mat or prefer to take airbeds – in which case don’t forget the pump! A torch or lantern is vital as are warm and waterproof clothes – remember even in a hot summer it can get chilly at night and waking up cold can be miserable – as well as making it very hard to get to sleep again! For eating you’ll need a stove or a single-use barbeque but if you choose the latter, do not forget to take a decent lighter or windproof matches. A decent camping stove is a must – but don’t forget to take a new canister of gas with you! Take a couple of small pots and pans, some cutlery and plates - and don’t forget the can opener! It might sound strange, but you’ll be surprised how much better canned food can taste when it’s cooked out in the open! For more civilised ‘dining’ take a folding table and chairs. Washing up liquid and a sponge, a water carrier and bin bags are also essential! For the morning you’ll need towels and toiletries, and, of course, clean clothes. If you really want to get basic then take washing powder and pegs to wash and dry your clothes, but a full bag with clean clothes for every day is the norm! For experiencing the great outdoors don’t forget hiking boots and other recommended accessories are toilet roll, dry wash gel, a first aid kit, insect repellent, suncream, hats, sunglasses, toys and games, books and magazines, maps and a GPS system, a picnic rug and a cool box. As ‘staycations’ become more popular a caravan or a tent can be a great easy way of getting away from it all and exploring the most beautiful areas of the country.

Security

Summer Security ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

H

During the summer we all look forward to a week or two away from our jobs and a much-needed getaway on holiday

owever, all the time you are away from home there can be the nagging worry that thieves may target your house. Unless you have someone willing and able to check the property over every day there are difficult decisions to be made such as whether to leave the curtains open or closed – either can give away that the property is unoccupied. But what else can you do to keep thieves at bay? And indeed what can you do to protect your house even if you are only out for short periods? Here are some tips to make your property more secure for any amount of time, be it an hour or a fortnight. Make sure you keep your valuables out of view – put them in drawers, cupboards and away from windows. Don’t leave watches, jewellery, stereos and iPods on display. For general security you can download tracking software onto laptops and mobile phones (see www. immobilise.com) as this will mean if the worse does happen and they get stolen, then if they are recovered they will be returned to you. Make sure windows are not just closed but locked as well when you go out – and ensure any keys used to close doors and windows are not left in the keyhole, but removed and put well out of sight. Keep all access to your house locked, so that means gates to the garden – remember any thief who can just walk round the back of your house will have a greater chance of being unnoticed and can undertake an attempted break in with less chance of being seen. A property alarm is a good bet. It’s widely known that thieves who scout areas looking for suitable properties to target will give those with an alarm a wider berth, and

“Keeping your property and possessions safe really is a matter of common sense and making sure that if you are not in, you are not inviting anyone else in!”

most likely leave them alone totally; it’s an extra hassle they do not need. So even if you have just a dummy alarm box on the side of the house, but in full display, then the chances are it will deter would-be thieves. But getting a proper alarm fitted, one that will activate, is well worth the expense. You can buy ready to install packages from the larger DIY stores or alternatively you can enlist the services of a security provider – it just depends upon your security needs. If you want your alarm to be monitored so that when it goes off someone is notified, the better option is professional installation from a reputable security provider. Some providers might offer keyholding services so that you can always be assured of a prompt response when the alarm goes off. Dave Simpson, Director of Donington-based security specialist GBSG is seeing more households opt for keyholding services for both peace of mind and practicality – peace of mind that a professionally trained and licensed security officer will attend to the alarm within a 20 minute timeframe when a house is empty, and practicality as there may be no family members living close by to look after the spare key. Plus, would you really want a relative or friend going to your home and entering a potentially dangerous situation? Another consideration is how an alarm might affect your insurance. Many insurance providers will offer a reduced premium for homes that have a professional fitted National Inspectorate (NSI) accredited burglar alarm – and that’s a good….time to remind you to make sure you have home and contents insurance and that it is up to date and will cover you for when you are away. If you’re gardening, hanging out washing, barbecuing or relaxing in the garden make sure your house is locked. An opportunist thief can get in and out of the house in a few minutes. And indeed these can be more costly – if you’ve left your wallet or purse in the kitchen worktop while you pop into the garden – a thief may see it and try their luck – if the front door is unlocked, you’ve basically handed it to them on a plate. Don’t leave garden tools outside, as while a hoe or a spade might not be of value, they could be used to force entry and commit a burglary. Even leaving a pile of bricks around is a gift for a burglar who is prepared to break the windows. On the subject of leaving things in the garden, where possible don’t leave bikes and outdoors and make sure your garage is also locked at all times – again, a wide open garage could see a thief in and out in a few minutes. Such opportunist moments could be avoided not only by removing temptation but also by the use of electronic gates – ideal for keeping unwanted visitors out! SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk |

Home Project

Make your bedroom a sanctuary Ideally the master bedroom is a quiet haven where you can get away from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the home

I

❱ BY KATE CHAPMAN

f you’re boudoir’s anything but a place of relaxation and rest maybe it’s time to think about changing the décor, to help create a more serene and welcoming environment. Its sounds an expensive exercise, but making your bedroom a calming and tranquil sanctuary doesn’t need to be costly - we’ve compiled a few handy tips to help you transform your room into your very own little haven.....

Switch off If you’re using your bedroom as a work space or a place to watch television, chances are you’ll find it more difficult to relax there. Why not think about switching off and removing electrical equipment to elsewhere in the house and make your bedroom a screen free zone.

Curl up If you’ve got the space, why not consider adding a cosy seating area? Not only will it give you somewhere to seek solace away from the rest of the house, but will also provide the ideal place to curl up and enjoy a good book in peace.

overflowing with clothes, shoes and accessories you no longer wear, take the time to sort them out, getting rid of the things you no longer wear.

Neutral tones

Glamour

Neutral colours are calming and create a wonderfully peaceful environment - think about incorporating these into your room’s colour scheme. Alternatively changing your linens is a cost-effective way of altering the look and ambience of your room, and if you still want a splash of colour go for cool tones like blues and greens rather than brighter red and orange hues.

Add a touch of glamour to your room by including some statement pieces like a sparkling chandelier or even a canopy above your bed. Think about adding a vanity unit if you don’t already have one, as this will give you a dedicated space to keep cosmetics and get ready for those special occasions. Rather than tuck a full length mirror away on the back of the bedroom door, make it a feature of your room with a large, ornately framed one in a prominent place.

De-clutter If your bedroom is covered in piles of clothes, books and even toys chances are you won’t be able to relax among the clutter. Tidy up and put everything away. If you’ve got wardrobes and cupboards

“transform your room into your very own little haven...”

Pictures Don’t confine pictures to your downstairs living areas - they can be a tranquil addition to any bedroom too. Why not hang some of your favourite photographs on a feature wall? Pictures of your nearest and dearest and favourite places will help you unwind, relax and remember happier times.

Gardening project

The Good Life! ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

Today, more and more people are allocating parts of their garden to growing fruit and vegetables and keeping chickens “It is hard work (although not complicated work) but this will pale into insignificance the first time you are sat enjoying a meal made in your own back garden!”

I

f you haven’t yet thought about doing the same or are wondering where to start then now is the time! Growing your own fruit and veg need not be a challenge. And owning chickens for meat and eggs can be enjoyable. For starters, eggs from your own, free range hens are far tastier than those you get from a supermarket. I have three hens who are all good layers. I get three eggs a day and they are perfect. It’s also nice knowing exactly where your produce has come from. To keep hens, you need to buy them from a reliable source; I got mine from a small farm near Boston where they showed me round so I could see the birds were kept well. They had all their vaccinations, been tested for Salmonella and were at the age where they would start laying. Sure enough, within a couple of weeks, we had our first results. The hens cost between £8 and £17 each (depending on the breed) so are not expensive. You’ll need a hen house and if you don’t want them roaming around your garden a chicken run, and you can get these from the local pet shop. Cover the hen house and nest box floor with suitable bedding, and make sure there is a decent size perch for them to roost on at night. Free range or cooped, make sure your hens always have

32 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON

access to fresh water and some approved hen food every day and that’s pretty much it. Clean the hen house out every week or so and spray to combat red mite (especially important in during the summer months), and treat them to a few veg and they’ll be happy. My hens particularly love nettles! Growing vegetables can also be very rewarding. First, plan your vegetable plot and improve the soil by digging it over and removing any roots and weeds. The next job is to add bulky organic material such as manure. Also make sure you start a compost heap as producing your own garden compost will provide a regular supply of goodness for your soil which is essential. When deciding what to grow, make sure you keep the following vegetables together: Cabbages, cauliflower, sprouts, kale, swedes and turnips / onions, shallots, leeks and garlic / carrots, celery and parsnips / potatoes and tomatoes / peas and beans. As long as these groups are on a different area each year during the cycle, other vegetables such as lettuce and beetroot can be fitted around them. To look after your crops they will need water which will mostly come from rain, but water them yourself if necessary to get them off to a good start. Water young plants for two weeks in dry weather to help them get going and thereafter there should be enough moisture in the soil. During a hot summer, make sure you give them a good drenching every week as opposed to a daily sprinkling. For most vegetables, using a balanced fertiliser will ensure the best results. Remember that weeds will compete for water and nutrients so must be controlled and removed. Also beware of minibeasts - keep pests off with fine netting and organic slug pellets will protect your patch from slugs and snails whilst not harming any other wildlife. Flying insects should be kept off by using garden fleece or fine mesh netting which you can pick up at your local garden centre. It is hard work (although not complicated work) but this will pale into insignificance the first time you are sat enjoying a meal made in your own back garden!

Mercedes-Benz SLK 250 CDI

T

If you really like driving then a roadster is the sort of car you probably desire – unless there’s one in your garage already

here’s something intoxicating about two-up, open-top motoring. Traditionally, these cars are powered with petrol. But Mercedes-Benz has gone one further with its SLK 250 CDI Roadster and fitted a diesel engine into it. While oil-burning drop-tops have been a premium manufacturer product for a few years now, this is the first two-seat, rear-drive convertible that runs on the stuff. The 204 bhp four-cylinder lump puts the MercedesBenz at the top of its class in several respects. With an average fuel consumption of 56.5 mpg it’s the most economical roadster in its sector. The frugal fuel drinking makes the SLK 250 CDI a car with superior long-distance qualities. It is for example quite possible to drive from the North Sea in the UK to a beach on the Mediterranean non-stop. Supportive sports seats, a decent suspension setup and the largest luggage capacity in this car category also do their bit to create the right conditions. I drove the 250 CDI AMG Sport model. Thanks to bags of low down shove and a 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission, it accelerates from 0-62 mph in 6.7 seconds. This means the car has another feather in its cap: it’s the most powerful diesel model in its class. The result is dramatic driving enjoyment both on twisty country roads and motorway stretches. As it shares the same genes as other members of the SLK family, the 250 CDI combines its alert

“To be honest, there are so few areas for criticism. The motor is what it is...”

acceleration with stylish comfort, a stunning sports car design and day-to-day suitability. The SLK 250 CDI is available with a choice of three versions of the German motor-manufacturer’s famous vario-roof – one of them the panoramic vario-roof with Magic Sky Control. This glass top can be changed from dark to transparent at the touch of a button. It’s clever stuff – especially if the weather means you can’t drop the roof but you still want to feel natural light flooding into the cabin. There are also three suspension versions available: a conventional steel suspension, a sports suspension with a stiffer spring and damper setup or a suspension with an electronically controlled, automatic damping system. The latter is part of the Dynamic Handling package, which also includes the Direct-Steer system and the Torque Vectoring Brake developed by Mercedes-Benz for particularly responsive and predictable handling characteristics. The SLK 250 CDI went on sale in 2012, yet it still looks like it’s just rolled out of the MercedesBenz design studios. Externally it’s no different in appearance from the petrol models. It even retains the twin exhaust system, and therefore has the same electrifying look for which all the SLK models are known. To be honest, there are so few areas for criticism. The motor is what it is: a two-seater sports car, so there’s little point moaning about lack of space for the dog and kids. Sure, I can see some petrol-purists turning their nose up at a diesel offering, but with the SLK 250 CDI’s pulling power and economy, it’s obvious why it’s such a good choice – even if you do need over £35,000 to afford a brand new one.
