Welcome to the November issue Last month I started my welcome talking of crisp, sun filled days but to be honest October has been anything but! I had been organised and swapped all our summer clothes for winter ones, packed the flip flops and suncream away but in reality had to drag some of it back out as the beginning of the month can only be described as an Indian summer…does this mean we are in for another harsh winter. To be honest, I hope so!

This month we have enjoyed lots of family adventures, I celebrated my birthday with a trip to Thomas Land! Not quite sure what Hayley of 5 years ago would think to that, but we had a great day, if you’ve got a train fan then I’d definitely recommend the trip. We went to the New Theatre, Lincoln and watched Bing Live! which was my sons first visit to the theatre. He has also started football classes and my daughter is signed up for baby ballet. November is going to seem a bit boring.

Enough about us, back to the issue. As the nights will be drawing in once the clocks go back we look at home security, we have a focus on Kirton, a guide for you if you’re thinking about eating out at Christmas there’s also tips on safer driving through the winter months with some basic motor checks.

News People in East Midlands urged to download app to improve dementia diagnosis

People in the East Midlands are being urged to help improve the speed and accuracy of dementia diagnosis…by playing a smartphone game.

Alzheimer’s Society, the UK’s leading dementia charity, is calling on people to download and use GameChanger – a new brain games app – for just five minutes a day over one month.

Researchers say data recorded on the app will enable them to understand more about how people usually perform – which will later help them to identify the warning signs of Alzheimer’s.

There are 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK, including 60,000 in the East Midlands. The national figure is set to exceed one million by 2021.

Someone in the UK develops dementia every three minutes, but a third of cases are undiagnosed. It is hoped GameChanger will lead to better understanding of the condition which, in turn, will result in improved diagnosis rates.

Alzheimer’s Society has worked with scientists at the University of Oxford’s Big Data Institute on the app, which features a series of games designed to test specific aspects of memory and thinking that are affected in the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease.

It is hoped the app can eventually be used to find people in the very early stages of the disease and develop new treatments to stop it in its tracks.

Dr Chris Hinds from the University of Oxford’s Big Data Institute, commented: “People using the app are just playing games but their phones are doing much more – collecting data that we can use to learn about the brain, to help us understand what is a natural part of ageing and what’s a warning sign.

“Technology can open up these hugely exciting areas of dementia research, but we need people to get involved and help drive the GameChanger project forward.

Hopefully with enough support one day we will be able to spot those very early changes in the brain and stop the disease from developing.”

Beyond GameChanger, Alzheimer’s Society has a research portfolio of 182 active projects worth over £35 million this year alone, and as a founding funder of the UK Dementia Research Institute it is committed to spending at least £150m in the next decade.

Volunteers Honoured For Stepping Up

Dedicated volunteers have won awards for going above and beyond encouraging people to stay fit and healthy by joining local health walks.

There are more than 60 regular volunteer-run health walks across Lincolnshire’s seven districts, that all come under the national Ramblers Walking for Health scheme.

During a recent celebration event at Market Rasen Racecourse, nine of the hard-working volunteers who help lead health walks were recognised with awards.

Lincolnshire Co-op supports health walks in Lincoln, South Kesteven and East Lindsey and helps bring together a network of walks across the whole county alongside other agencies such as Greenwich Leisure and One Life.

Walk leaders Nev and Chris Padley from Skendleby near Spilsby organise the East Lindsey Heart Support Group and were honoured with a special health award.

They joined the group 14 years ago and became walk leaders two years later in 2006 and have led walks ever since. They support people with health conditions and go the extra mile by arranging lunches at Batemans Brewery after their Wainfleet walk near Skegness, asking the tea rooms at Burgh Le Marsh to open especially for the walkers, and visiting a farmer

to make sure his cows are not in a field when the group are walking.

“It’s a total shock to win and it’s lovely that people have voted for us. We love walking and it gets people out giving them confidence to make friends and meet new people.”

Health walks can benefit people in lots of ways. As well as improving people’s physical wellbeing, walkers can meet others and enjoy their local area enhancing their mental health.

Walk lasts between 30 and 90 minutes and takes place on a regular basis. Groups cater for different abilities so everyone can enjoy walks at their own pace.

Lincolnshire Co-op Community and Health Walks Co-ordinator Karen Doherty said: “We’re immensely proud of all volunteer walk leaders and want to say thank you for their dedication and enthusiasm in leading groups and supporting others.

“Winners were put forward by fellow volunteer walk leaders and walkers and we were really impressed with some of the nominations that came in. Amongst many attributes, they were praised for their commitment, friendliness, encouragement and endless kindness.”

Bloomin’ ‘eck – pubs are winning awards as well What a bloomin’ great end to the year for Boston – gold and top prizes in the in-bloom competition and now awards for the top pub displays.

Goodbarns Yard received first prize in the first Pub in Bloom competition organised by Boston in Bloom and sponsored by Coaching Inn Group. The pub in Wormgate received the winner’s plaque and a gift voucher for £50 to spend on its garden at Chanson Flowers and Plants, Wrangle.

Judges awarded the prize after visiting the garden and open-air dining area at the rear of the pub, overlooking the river and in the shadow of Boston Stump.

Manager Allison Gott praised gardener David Luto who had worked so hard to give customers a colourful, peaceful and relaxing area in which to enjoy the glorious summer we have had. The judges also commended him for his use of evergreens in the window boxes at the front of the pub which will continue to give year-round appeal.

Runners-up were the Hammer and Pincers in Swineshead Road and The Coach and Horses in Main Ridge.

Both were commended for their use of colour, especially in their hanging baskets. They received plaques and £25 each to spend at Chanson Flowers and Plants, Wrangle.

Every pub which entered received a £10 voucher to spend at the nursery.

Alison Fairman, chairman of Boston in Bloom, which last week learned Boston was the overall winner for the East Midlands in the large towns category, and picked up its fourth gold medal for the fourth year running, said: “We were pleased with the response our first Pub in Bloom competition received, and we will run it again next year, when we hope word will have got round and more, especially pubs in the

villages, will take part. I have seen some fabulous pub gardens in the borough.

“Pubs, in town or the villages, remain at the heart of our way of life and it is really great to see so many staff taking the time and trouble to make them even nicer for their customers who want a pleasant place to relax with friends.”

In this year’s East Midlands in Bloom competition the art deco garden in Central Park was awarded the prize for best new permanent landscape, receiving a £250 voucher for trees, and the floral piano and soldier display in the Stump grounds received the best First World War award.

hope you all had a great summer. For once we cannot complain about the weather.

And it’s my hope that no one will have complained that there was not much to do in Boston.

And 2018 isn’t done yet. We have a number of big events still to take place, including the major Christmas celebrations to round off a successful year.

Already a full programme of community events is at an advanced stage for next year, with some still to be revealed, which I am sure will prove very popular. Watch this space.

Boston Borough Council, Boston Town Area Committee and their partners have been working hard to generate year-round events for all ages.

Thousands have enjoyed a diverse programme of fun events, ranging from face painting and craft days for children through to beach days for the over-60s, funded by Boston Big Local, and family events such as outdoor cinema screenings. The Greatest Showman was especially popular, selling out in Central Park.

We have had many encouraging comments back from those who attended and enjoyed themselves. We are so grateful to those who have worked alongside us and, in some cases, sponsored the events.

The Christmas in Boston community team has been working hard to make the town Christmas lights display even bigger and better this year. Electricians and supporters have been busy behind the scenes throughout the summer months, making and preparing the lights and festive displays following the successful effort last year.

Organisers of the community group now want to hear from businesses which would like an illuminated Christmas tree for their premises, or some other festive display. And a crowd funding page for public donations can be found at www.christmasinboston2018. co.uk and the Christmas in Boston 2018

Boston Borough Council has agreed to match fund from the migration fund everything they raise up to a maximum of £10,000 for Christmas 2018 and again for 2019.

There will be two light switch-ons on Thursday November 29. One will be in the Market Place at 6.30pm when the main Christmas tree near the Ingram Memorial will be the main focus, then another for Pescod Square.

During the switch-on night there will be a fourth big Illuminate parade by arts organisation Transported, live entertainment in the Market Place and a Christmas Market organised by Boston Borough Council extending from the Market Place to Wide Bargate.

Christmas craft and gift fairs will take place in the Market Place on Thursdays, December 6, 13 and 20 when there will be also be late-night shopping and free festive entertainment and free parking in ALL Boston Borough Council-run car parks from 4.30pm to 8.30pm on each of those days.

Please be aware free parking is only availalable in car parks owned by Boston Borough Council and this does not include on-street parking including the Market Place, which are controlled by Lincolnshire County Council. Please don’t let your night out be spoiled by picking up a parking ticket.

I hope that free car parking will encourage lots to come into town for these events, and there is a choice of one, two, three or all of the nights to enjoy, all of them with free parking.

On Sunday, December 16, there will be another festive market and Boston’s first Santa Run will take place in Boston Market Place and Pescod Square.

It would be remiss of me not to congratulate our hard-working in-bloom team who scooped a fourth gold medal and came top of the large town’s category in the annual East Midlands In-Bloom awards.

It’s really gratifying to have independent recognition and confirmation of what a great place Boston is to live, work and visit.

Ideas to improve the weekly markets in Boston, including one from students for a “welcome” arch are now being investigated further. The students also recommended that street performers should be encouraged to “create an atmosphere”, local theatre and dance groups and musicians should be allowed to perform on market days and specific cultural events should be staged during the summer.

The Cabinet has agreed the introduction of a cultural offer supporting the markets, bigger and better signage and stalls for students during school holidays.

Other recommendations which have already been implemented include new rubbish bins and advice to traders about better use of trader bins provided on market days, new seats for the public and a large notice board in the Market Place.

There will also be a relaxation of the current rules which determine how many regular traders selling the same goods can stand.

I want to thank everyone who contributed to the markets review.

hildren live in a world that is there to be discovered by themselves - they have to find their own way and path their own futures, adults along with children don’t always learn right from wrong through the mediums of grown-ups saying no.

Practice makes perfect and this is why the Lincolnshire Mini Police program has been written around the pedagogy of Pupil Voice.

The Mini Police program has been written as a broad and balanced curriculum that falls in line with the national curriculum for PHSE Education and fits into the Social, Moral, Spiritual, Cultural Curriculum headers (SMSC) and Fundamental British Values,

there is a pathway through the Mini Police Curriculum and all the subjects are interweaving and link into Local and National crime Priorities. With it being written as a curriculum with lesson plans it helps the police service to be pro-active and ensure consistency across Lincolnshire as well as building children’s aspirations and in some cases we are igniting a love for emergency services, policing or a drive to be involved in their local communities via the means of Pupil Voice.

We no longer attend schools and say they “must do this”; we now deliver a snippet of factual information and now ask “how could you make this better”. It is all in the language used and we have to remember not all children or areas are the same, and as the Mini Police programme is being ran in 119 schools across our county consistency was key. Pupil voice allows for a great deal of reflection and free thinking in the children and the facilitator. They are our future so why not give them the power to change it going forward.

Countdown to Christmas at Vancouver Quarter

T

here are so many reasons to visit King’s Lynn during the countdown to Christmas.

There will be the festive LateNight Shopping spectacular program of events, an enchanting Christmas market, and Father Christmas will be jetting in to meet children in his grotto just to name a few!

But all of these follow King’s Lynn’s Christmas Lights switch on event that promises to be an afternoon of festive fun on Sunday 25th November. Starting at 12 noon, there will be street entertainers, a glitter bar and face-painters, music and family-focused activities, before the countdown to the switch on begins at 4pm on the Tuesday Market Place.

Father Christmas will be opening his grotto doors on the 25th of November, just in time to pop along and help switch the Christmas Lights on too! Father Christmas can be found in the Vancouver Quarter every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday right up to Christmas. The

grotto is a free event however booking is essential and bookings need to be made via the Vancouver Quarter website.

Late Night Shopping launches on November 29th, this year there is a fun packed program of street entertainment, workshops and music. Back for a second year, on the King’s Lynn countdown to Christmas is a local makers market on November 29th that will see 60 traders all around the town selling a whole range of Norfolk handmade wares – perfect for finding unique presents for all the family.

A

ctive Birth is a phrase used by lots of people in relation to your labour and birth but what does it actually mean?

For the majority, it conjures up images of moving around during labour, walking up and down hospital corridors, climbing up and down stairs, maybe dancing or swaying with contractions – in general, keeping moving.

In part this is true, but maybe Active Birth should be renamed ‘Not Passive Birth’. I realise this doesn’t quite roll off the tongue in the same way!! All the way through your labour and birth you and your baby are having a magical and silent conversation with each other about navigating your pelvis. On a base level, babies are designed to be born and women are designed to give birth. That’s not to say there aren’t problems on the way, but if it wasn’t true we would have died out a long time ago and humans would cease to exist.

Babies are very adaptable and are capable of moving through your pelvis in the most energy efficient way possible. All the way through they are giving you little hints and tips about what they need. If they want a bit more space on the left to move a stubborn arm, and if you listen to your body, you will find yourself leaning to your right to free up some space.

Your baby is also responsible for all the seemingly random positions you adopt in labour ‘just because it feels right’ – kneeling, squatting, bending, twisting etc.

In listening to your body you are listening to your baby and working together to birth. Your baby is telling you you aren’t a passive part of the labour. You can’t just lie there and wait for it to happen. As a rule, what happens to you, happens to baby.

If you’re tired, so are they. If your blood sugar is low, so will theirs be. The shorter your labour, the less likely your baby will indicate that they need some help, and the less likely you will be to need medical intervention. Reserve your energy, eat and drink, listen to your body (and your baby) and put up the least resistance possible. Don’t waste a single calorie! This is the part where ‘active’ labour can give the wrong impression. If you instinctively need to rest, then do so. Keeping moving and using up valuable glucose and energy might not be the best thing. Sitting, kneeling, birth ball, in the birth pool… anywhere but flat on your back.

Your coccyx (the bit at the bottom of your spine that really hurts when you land on it) can move up to 3cm to help your baby be born. It can’t do that if you’re lying down though. 3cm is about 30% extra space!! Help your baby by listening to what they have to tell you – while it’s not a full proof plan, it will go a long way to helping you have the birth you want.

Year 12 and Beyond What are your Options?

S

taying in education does not mean you have to stay in school. While joining your school’s sixth form might feel like the most comfortable thing to do, it is worthwhile looking into local colleges as well as Apprenticeships, Traineeships and Volunteering if you feel like you are ready for the world of work.

If you would like to study A-levels, you may have a sixth form attached to the school you currently study at but it is worth taking a look at other sixth forms in the area as the courses offered will vary. Local colleges will also offer A-levels so make sure your search is a thorough one. Alongside A-levels you will be familiar with such as English, Maths and Science you can study subjects which may be new to you such as Film Studies, Business and Law. Your GCSE grades will determine where you are able to study so take into consideration the subjects that you do well

in and enjoy when you are deciding which subjects to take forward.

If you are more interested in learning a trade and getting busy with practical lessons, then a vocational qualification may be a good fit for you. Many vocational qualifications do not need you to have any prior experience, however most courses will still require grade A-C (new grades 9-4) passes in English and maths. Should you not achieve those grades you must continue to study them as part of your post-16 education, so you may still be accepted onto the course of your choice whilst achieving the required maths and English alongside.

This area has some excellent colleges which offer a wide range of academic and vocational courses, with some even offering university level courses which would mean you could stay close to home, reducing your costs! Make sure you do your research to narrow down

your options as you will find that colleges offer many courses. Start by visiting websites for information and check out when open events and taster days are so you can visit and get a feel for the places and the areas you would like to study.

If you are eager to get to work then an Apprenticeship is a great way to learn ‘on-thejob’ and gain quality work-based training whilst also getting paid. You will gain experience in the workplace but also have the support of a college where you will spend some of your time learning in the classrooms (or workshops, depending on the type of work placement). If you want to do an Apprenticeship but don’t feel quite ready then a Traineeship could be a better option for you. Completed over a much shorter period of time it gives you the opportunity to see how you fit within a business and sample the type of work you might do. Once you have gained the confidence and abilities then the next step could be on to an Apprenticeship.

You also have the option to study for a qualification and also carry out some volunteering work in between your studies.

Not only can you gain work experience in an industry you hope to one day work in and develop skills which will look good on your CV, volunteering can also be a good inclusion when you are preparing to fill our your UCAS forms and personal statements for university.

Causes of ear pain

Spotting earache in babies and young children A young child might have earache if they: • rub or pull their ear • don’t react to some sounds • have a temperature of 38C or above • are irritable or restless • are off their food • keep losing their balance Earache and ear pain can affect one or both ears.

Whilst we would always recommend visiting your pharmacist or doctor there are some other home remedies you may want to try too!

Hot and Cold Packs Heat from an electric heating pad or hot pack can reduce inflammation and pain in the ear.Apply a hot pad to the ear for 20 minutes. For best results, people should touch the neck and throat with the hot pad.

The heating pad should not be unbearably hot. People should never fall asleep with a heating pad, or allow a child to use a hot pack without adult supervision.

A cold pack can help with the pain of an earache. Try wrapping ice in paper towels or freezing a cold pack and then covering it with a light cloth. Hold this

to the ear and the area immediately under the ear for 20 minutes.

The cold should not hurt, and parents should never apply ice directly to their children’s skin.

Some people find that heat offers greater relief than cold. For others, alternating hot and cold packs (20 minutes hot, followed by 20 minutes cold) provides the best pain relief.

Garlic Eating a clove of garlic a day may help prevent ear infections.

Garlic has long been used in folk medicine to relieve pain. Some research suggests it has antimicrobial properties that can fight infection.

People should not use it as a substitute for antibiotics a doctor has recommended. Instead, consider adding garlic to an antibiotic regimen to speed up relief.

To prevent ear infections, try eating a clove of garlic each day.

Garlic ear drops may also reduce pain and prevent an infection from getting worse. Cook two or three cloves in two tablespoons of mustard or sesame seed oil until brown, then strain the mix. Then, apply a drop or two to each ear.

Tips for Motoring in the Winter Winter is here, which means earlier sunsets and reduced visibility on the roads.

Get your lights and windscreen wipers in order In colder weather, clear windscreens of condensation or ice before setting of.

Always give yourself extra time, to ensure visibility is at an optimum before starting your journey.

Windscreen wipers - Make sure your wiper blades are in good condition. If they squeak as they wipe, they probably need replacing, always make sure they are turned off before starting the ignition to save the blades and the risk of a blown motor fuse when the first frost hits.

Blades will last for two years at the most. New blades clear the screen more effectively and so help reduce dazzle from the sun.

Now is a good time to renew worn blades.

Clear out plenum chambers - the tray-like area under the bonnet, below the windscreen.

This can fill up with water when it gets blocked with leaves.

This water can seep into the car’s electrics, causing expensive and potentially dangerous damage.

Windscreen washer fluid Top up and treat with a good quality, purpose-made additive to reduce the chance of freezing.

Don’t use ordinary engine antifreeze but do check the handbook carefully to make sure you fill the right reservoir.

Don’t use washing up liquid either as this can cause a blockage.

Battery and Bulbs Keep the top of the battery clean and dry and make sure the terminals are tight and free from corrosion.

If a battery is more than three years old, check it now; you might save yourself many a frustrating start to a morning.

This is one of the most common causes of breakdown at any time of year, but particularly in the winter when electrical loads are higher.

If there’s any sign of the battery struggling now, the likelihood is that it’ll let you down at some time during the winter, particularly if it’s more than five years old.

It makes sense to renew the battery now to avoid the hassle and inconvenience of an unplanned failure later.

Check all bulbs regularly (at least once a week) not forgetting

brake lights and number plate lights.

The handbook will show you how to change bulbs, though some head light bulbs may require a visit to the garage.

Best to carry some spare bulbs!

Take the 20p test Check all tyres for condition, pressure and tread depth. We recommend at least 3mm of tread for winter motoring, so if the treads are getting low think about buying new tyres now before the colder weather sets in.
