Strategic Housing Market Assessment Update 2010

The Peterborough Sub-Regional Housing Market Partnership is undertaking an update of the 2007/08 Strategic Housing Market Assessment (SHMA) for the four local authorities of Peterborough, Rutland, South Holland and South Kesteven. The SHMA update seeks to estimate the amount and type of market and affordable housing needed up to 2026 and will form part of the evidence base for Local Development Frameworks. A draft report has now been written and is available online at www.sholland.gov.uk with an invitations for comments and feedback from a range of stakeholders on the content of the report. Community Spirit Play Days are back!

This summer’s open play days are in the theme of PIRATES! Held across the district throughout the summer holidays, they are aimed at young people aged 5 - 14 years old (under fives are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult). ‘Open play’ means that children can come and go as they please and join in only if they want to. These play sessions are not child care and should not be confused with a child care facility. The following sessions are available: l Pirate theme lFree open access, play activities - can be messy and risky!! l Arts and crafts l Games including water games l Free healthy refreshments All helpers are CRB checked and first aiders will be present. These play sessions are provided by South Holland Tenants Group and Children’s Links Playrangers with support from South Holland District Council Housing Officers.

Little Lions Pre-School Opening in Holbeach St Marks

In September 2010 Holbeach St Marks School is opening a new pre-school, called Little Lions. Parents are able to take up the offer of a free place for their child from the term after they are three for up to 15 hours. Children may attend Little Lions in the term they are three for a small fee. Sessions will run from 8.45 – 11.45 every weekday morning. Susan Yoxall has always been interested in crystals, cards, psychic readings and spiritual healing and often bought crystals and cards from different on-line retailers but felt frustrated at the impersonal approach of not being able to touch and experience the items prior to purchase. After speaking to other like minded friends and discovering that they also shared the same frustrations, Susan began to consider the validity of opening a shop that offers a more hands on approach. Susan has now opened Fenchantments in Pinchbeck, to be a one stop shop offering gifts, alternative healing and complimentary therapies. So whether you’re new or experienced to spirituality, just looking for something that’s not a mainstream gift or want a complimentary therapy just for you, pop in, have a look and a chat you’ll be surprised what you find.

Take Pride in Holbeach

The Pride In Holbeach committee was formed 20 years ago and is a voluntary group made up of six parish councillors and five employees under the chairmanship of councillor Terry Harrington. The aim of the group is to bring some colour to the town by the planting up of areas in the closed churchyard, Church Street, Swtukeley grounds, the parish council office and various tubs and containers in and around the town. The planting is funded by the parish council and watered by the staff. The loyal voluntary persons help with the planting and the committee meet during the year to plan and organise the year’s work. The committee are always looking for volunteers either to tidy the town or help with the planting. Any help no matter how small would be most appreciated, please call into the parish council office at Coubro Chambers 11 West End, Holbeach (opposite the One Stop shop) or telephone the parish council office on 01406 426739 if anyone is interested.

Pupils to Cycle in Aid of Charity

Harry Barnett, William Jex and Oliver Maltby are cycling the length of Britain for Cancer Research UK. A trip covering the distance of at least 874 miles! The team are looking for as many donations to the event fund as possible, no matter how big or small for this very worthy cause. Camilla Smith and Ben Garner shall be accompanying the duration of the trip as support, if it is ever needed. If you would like to make a contribution, you can collect a donation form from Spalding Grammar School.

The Teenage Drop – In Station (TDS) now has a lease, insurance and is just awaiting confirmation of a change of use planning application. It is likely to have its first day on Wednesday July 7th, when 20 volunteers from the George Farmer School will be taking part in an art and photography workshop with the aim of putting on an exhibition later in the year. If you would like to volunteer a few hours to help run the centre, please let me know. Teenagers will be welcome to “drop in” to relax and chill out with friends in a safe and friendly environment. Opening times will shortly be advertised in the local press. Traffic Lights, A site meeting has just taken place with an LCC Highways engineer and myself to look again at the traffic lights to improve flow through the town. As a result we are putting in a bid for a new smart system that recognises when queues are building up and allows the lights to stay longer on green when it is required. “Keep Clear” markings on the road will also be put outside the entrance to Nat West to allow people to pull in or go out without holding up the traffic. Police & Portfolio Holder of Place Update. There is now a target date of July 18th to install 2 football goals on the Hall Hill Playing Field funded by the Police & Portfolio Holder of Place and hopefully to finish with a “Big Lunch”! Designs for parking, emergency access and landscaping are near completion for the ‘green’ and will go out to residents for consultation soon. Planting of the landscaped areas will now take place in the autumn. Two laptop computers will shortly be provided for Cecil Pywell Avenue Community Centre in Holbeach and Fleet Community Centre to enable the residents to have better access to information and keep in contact with relatives who live away via email and the internet. The project will be getting in some young people as part of a volunteer programme to teach the older ones how to use the laptops. Good stuff! Pupils from the George Farmer as part of the above mentioned volunteer programme will also be writing an article for Simply Holbeach(which we hope will become a regular feature), with guidance from the editor!

There is a new Interactive Community Website for Holbeach to help improve communication and to enable direct engagement with the public on specific issues via polls, social networking and daily news. More information is still needed to populate it – Go to Login at www.holbeachcommunity.info, then create an account and then you will be able to send in information from your local group, society or club. Boston Road Car Park now open on Sundays from 6.30am – 7pm. The Conservation Action Plan for Holbeach is near completion – once that piece of work is done, it, along with the draft Conservation Area Appraisal will be taken to South Holland’s Planning committee for approval. This will enable the council to have greater control over the types of retail premises, colour schemes and future building in the town centre. Roundabouts are now maintained by South Holland District Council on behalf of Lincolnshire County Council. If they are sponsored they will be landscaped and planted up. If they are not sponsored they will be cut 4 – 5 times a year. Currently neither of the Holbeach Roundabouts are sponsored. The cost is £1,500 in the

onsumers across South Holland are being urged to Shop Local in a concerted campaign to support the local businesses, breathe new life into the local economy - and do their bit to combat global warming. Simply Holbeacb is developing this enterprising initiative with the businesses to give residents the social, economic and environmental benefits that shopping locally can bring - including creating and retaining jobs. We are keen to counter common misconceptions that local shopping is more expensive or offers less choice. On the contrary, shopping locally can be the most eco-friendly option, while helping to keep your community vibrant and alive.

Spearheading the campaign

Simply Holbeach is leading the campaign but it’s you who can make the difference. Holbeach still has an excellent range of small, many of them family-run, shops, but they need local people’s support, if they are to continue to thrive in the future. Shop Local aims to raise awareness of the need to back local businesses, to preserve the unique character and economic viability of the town centre for generations to come.

Volcanic ash travel problems?

T

here is still some disruption to air travel caused by volcanic ash from Iceland and the fear of further volcanic eruptions. If you are planning to fly, it’s advisable to check with your airline for details of any flight disruptions before going to the airport.

Know your rights!

The following advice may be helpful: Flights from European Union (EU) airports or on EU airlines

If you are flying with an EU airline or from an EU airport and your flight is cancelled then there are rules which state that you must be offered a refund or the chance to be rerouted onto a later flight. If you’re abroad and your flight home is cancelled or substantially delayed you are entitled to meals and refreshments and any necessary hotel accommodation, while waiting for the airline to reroute you onto a later flight. However, since the current disruption is beyond the control of the airlines, there is no right under EU rules to any further compensation. You should check with your airline what they are prepared to provide. If you decide to accept a refund from your airline, you will not be entitled to any meals, refreshments or hotel accommodation.

Flights from non-EU airports

If you are flying with a non-EU airline to a non-EU destination you are not covered by EU rules and you should check the airline’s terms and conditions. You are likely to be offered a refund or the chance to rebook.

Complaints against the airline

If you think the airline did not do what it’s supposed to according to EU rules, you should make a complaint. You must complain to the airline first of all. If you get nowhere, you can complain to the Air Transport Users Council (ATUC), the official airline watchdog in the UK. The ATUC will need to see the airline’s response to your complaint and will then decide if you have a real grievance or not. If it thinks you do, ATUC will take it up with the airline. You will then be advised if your complaint has been successful or not. If not, ATUC will offer further advice. If you want to take your claim further you can, as a last resort, make a claim in your local county court for any losses you have suffered which the airline have refused to refund. If you paid by credit card

Finally, if you paid for your holiday by credit card, there is a potential claim against your credit card provider if you cannot recover your costs from your airline or travel insurer.

If you’re stranded overseas and have run out of money

If you are stranded overseas you should contact your airline for help. If you are short of funds, friends or relatives may be able to send money to

you via a commercial money transfer service. If you have a serious problem, contact your local embassy, High Commission or consulate for help or advice. Employment rights

Be hot on your horse’s health this summer!

As summer arrives it brings with it plenty of potential health hazards for horses. Here’s what to look out for and how to keep your horse healthy and happy over the coming months. Sweet Itch Sweet Itch is the common name for summer eczema. It’s an allergic reaction to bites from a certain species of midge which causes severe itching. The symptoms include restlessness, continual swishing of the tail to keep the flies away and you may notice your horse rubbing an area continuously against trees or fences. Excessive rubbing can cause damage and hair loss in that area too. These flies are around until October.

• Make sure stable doors are closed and windows have fine mesh screens to prevent midges entering the stable. • Creating a breeze in the stable, through the use of wall or ceiling mounted fans, will make it harder for midges to land on a horse when in the stable. • Avoid grazing your horse in a marshy, boggy field, this is where midges breed. Hives Also called ‘urticaria’ or ‘nettle rash’, hives is an allergic reaction seen as bumps on the skin that dent if pressed firmly. These are caused by an allergy to something, such as fly bites or contact/ingestion of a particular plant the horse is sensitive to. Hives can appear suddenly and can also be accompanied by swollen lips, eyelids and mouth. Large swelling can worsen as the days progress, but in most cases hives resolve themselves and you won’t need a vet. However, if the swelling affects your horse’s ability to breath or is severe contact the vet immediately.

There is no cure for sweet itch and, unfortunately, if your horse has an allergy they will suffer from it for life. The bites themselves not only hurt, but these flies may transmit harmful diseases, so prevention is definitely the solution. They can be controlled with repellants and electric light insect traps, mounted in the stable. There are other flies to consider too. The blackfly, which also lives on blood, will seek its meal inside the ear, the soft skin of the thighs and around the underside of your horse. If your horse has bloody scabs or crusted wounds, it’s likely they are infected. The best way to control these pests is using a repellant, ear nets and petroleum jelly on the targeted areas. Further pests you may find on and around your horse include small horn flies, sandflies and mosquitos. A good repellent and insecticide will help keep them at bay, also if you can keep your horse away from standing water, there will be less of them.

Sunburn Just like humans, horses can get sun burnt too. Unpigmented areas of your horse’s skin, such as the nose, are particularly vulnerable to sunburn. Avoid turning your horse out during the hottest part of the day in the height of the summer if you can and make sure there are shaded areas your horse can take cover if the heat gets too much. Also apply sun cream and should your horse get burnt apply soothing salves to affected areas. There are many ailments your horse can suffer with over the summer, but take some simple precautions to help protect your horse from as many as possible, and you’ll both enjoy the warmer weather!

Deaf Awareness Week D eaf Awareness Week ran from 28th June - 4th July, organised and co-ordinated by the UK Council on Deafness. It’s supported by over a hundred different deaf charities and organisations across the UK, all working together to raise further awareness of deafness and the wealth of support that is available. This year’s theme was called ‘Look At Me’, which aimed to help people develop their understanding of deafness by highlighting the different ways in which communication can be established. Written by Juliet England, a journalist who has severe hearing loss, the book aims to help people of all ages come to terms with their hearing loss or deafness and overcome the new challenges that daily life might bring. Nick Richer of Geo Adams & Sons in The Crescent, Spalding brings you his home made burger recipe. his recipe is made with good quality steak mince but you can use pork, turkey or chicken burgers following the same recipe. Mix the types of herbs and vary the amount of chilli according to your taste. I would suggest leaving out the chilli if cooking for children!

Ingredients

500g Steak Mince 3 or 4 slices of bread, dried for about 30mins and then crumbed 1 egg 1 medium onion, chopped finely 2 cloves of chopped garlic ½ fresh chilli 1tsp mixed herbs 2tbsp milk Salt & pepper to season

Method

Soften the onions in a small amount of oil and frying pan. In a bowl add the mince, onion, spices, egg, milk and half the bread crumbs. Mix well, keep adding more breadcrumbs until the mixture holds together and is tacky to the touch. Make into patties about 2cm thick and 8cm round (this mixture should make about 6-8) I usually oven cook at 200c for 25mins but you can cook in a frying pan, grill or BBQ. Being homemade they are more delicate and I find oven cooking keeps them intact. Serve in a bun with a good quality cheese slice, fried onions, mayonnaise, lettuce and tomato plus a portion of chips or potato wedges. As an extra treat, why not add a rasher of bacon too?

Top Tip

These ingredients make great meatballs, just make into rounds, put into an oven proof dish, cover with a tomato pasta sauce, bake at 200c for 45mins and serve with pasta. Spalding Hockey Club

M

odern day hockey, played on an all weather surface, is a fast, skilful and exciting game to play. It can also be very enjoyable when played at a more sedate pace and is a game for all members of the family. At Spalding Hockey Club, we try to accommodate players of all ages and abilities and appreciate that the off pitch social aspect is as important to many as playing the game itself. Venue

In June 2009, Spalding Hockey Club moved to a brand new all weather pitch set in the attractive surroundings of Glen Park in Surfleet. The ‘Revolution’ playing surface, the first of its kind in the world, not only looks magnificent but plays beautifully.

Senior League Teams

For this coming season, which starts in September, the Club will be fielding 8 adult league teams for the first time ever. As a result of an active youth policy and renewed interest from local players, there will be 3 Ladies teams playing in the Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire League and 5 Men’s teams playing in the East Leagues. The Men’s 1st team has enjoyed an outstanding year, winning their league in great style and gaining promotion for the coming season.

Social

The Club has an active year round social programme with something for everyone. The highlight of the year is the Dinner and Presentation Evening in April which was attended by almost 150 members and guests earlier this year.

Clubhouse

The Club is working hard to get funding together for a purpose built clubroom with changing facilities on site. Given the current economic climate, this is an uphill struggle but the Club plans to upgrade their current temporary facilities for next season.

The Club relies heavily on its membership to cover the ever increasing cost of running an amateur sports club and so financial assistance from any individual or company would be appreciated.

New member contact

New members, whether interested in playing, umpiring, team management or just wishing to be part of a thriving local organisation with its family based ethos, are always very welcome. Kelly Varley, who has joined the Club recently, wrote: “Following the birth of my first child last June I was looking for a new hobby to get me out of the house, meet new people and to try and improve my fitness/fatness! I had wanted to get back into hockey for such a long time after enjoying the game at school. I emailed Roz from the Spalding Hockey Club website and she informed me of the training sessions on a Tuesday and the beginners on a Friday. When I arrived at the pitch for the first time, my nerves hit me like a ton of bricks and I almost turned around and went back home! I managed to get myself onto the pitch somehow and was greeted by Fred’s friendly smile. He welcomed me and set me up in a team as they were playing in sixes as a bit of fun over the summer. It started well but by the end I could barely breathe! After more encouragement from Roz and Lou, I made it once again to training and stuck at it due to the friendly nature of the Club. My fitness began to improve and after a few months played my first league game which was also quite nerve wrecking! With Kate and Frances allowing me to grow instead of pointing out my mistakes, I have enjoyed many games and really look forward to next season. Anyone thinking about joining should just give it a go, I have seen many new members welcomed in the same way I was. It is a great Club to belong to and they help everyone at all levels to develop their skills.”

The Club holds coaching sessions for boys and girls aged 5 to 14 on Saturday mornings 9.30 to 11.00am between September and May. There is also the opportunity for young players to participate in local friendly, County based and National competitions through the season. Many of the Club’s youngsters have attended the Lincolnshire Junior Development Centre sessions based at Surfleet and gone on to represent the County at various age levels.

Hockey for Adult Beginners.

Several parents saw how much their children were enjoying playing hockey and wanted to have a go. As a result, informal sessions are now held on Friday evenings, 6.00 to 7.00pm for adult beginners and those who last played a while back at school. These evenings have proved to be extremely popular with the emphasis on gentle and social.

The UK’s Top Mini Event Mini In The Park 2010 will take place on Sunday 15th August at Santa Pod Raceway, and tickets are on sale now! Last year’s show attracted a record crowd of more than 9,000 Mini enthusiasts, plus over 1,000 campers, and the line-up of Mini action and attractions looks just as impressive this year. Once again there will be an opportunity to win the MITP Mini – last years winner, Kelly Richardson from Towcester, drove away this tasty MITP 1992 Mini Cooper from the show after buying a £2.50 ticket!
