The one word for April must be WOW...the weather has been gorgeous, I just hope we haven’t had the peak of the sunshine too early. As I write this I am looking across the fields behind our office a-wash with lushious greens, yellows and pinks, I often forget what a beautiful area we live in as I get on with my everyday life. The area really comes alive during May with all the flowers lining the fields, the Flower Parade in Spalding and all the churches, it seems like May is the month of celebration for South Holland. We now have The Food Festival to look forward to in July and August, so no longer do we have to wait until Holbeach Christmas Fair for the next big event. I have been out enjoying walks with my dog along the river banks, breakfast al fresco as well as plenty of barbecues. Royal British Legion Official Charity The Royal British Legion has been named as the official Charity of the Year for 2011/12 for Springfields Outlet Centre, Spalding, following a successful 2010/11 where visitors help raise £7,310 for Help for Heroes – the highest ever tally for a charity at Springfields. The Legion is the major voice for service and exservice people throughout the year. It campaigns and lobbies on a wide range of issues, including mental and physical health, housing and homelessness, employment, community and adult care, disability, skills development and debt. Its aim is to continuously improve the welfare and support provided for veterans, serving personnel and their dependants of all ages. Visitors to Springfields will be able to donate to the Legion every day, as there will be collection tins in stores and official merchandise available to buy at the Springfields Information Point, with all proceeds going to the Legion. Items will include pin badges, brooches, mugs, t-shirts and wristbands.

Grand Opening of New Food Heritage Centre

The Country Land and Business Association (CLA) has appointed a new Field Officer for South Lincolnshire, providing the rural watchdog with an increased presence in the county.

The much anticipated Red Lion Quarter in Spalding opened recently with a fantastic air of achievement and the combination of many partnerships hard work. John Hayes, Minister of State for Further Education, Skills and Life Long Learning and local MP, officially opened the building and congratulated the professional and hardworking team who have pulled together local resources, knowledge and understanding to create a multi-use, environmentally friendly, under budget and on-time building that hasn’t cost the taxpayer a penny. Chief Executive Officer of SHDC, Terry Huggins, welcomed guests who were invited to share the occasion with the staff and all those who have contributed to making the Red Lion Quarter a successful development. The Red Lion Quarter is a great addition to the town, a central resource that celebrates Lincolnshire’s food heritage whilst working with business’, suppliers and the community to develop fantastic partnerships that can help promote our counties many advantages and boost our economy.

Rural Watchdog Strengthens Presence in South Lincolnshire

Tim Pedlar, 46, of Eastwell, in the Vale of Belvoir, is a respected figure amongst rural communities in the region, having had a career in sales and property management, while living on his wife’s family farm for the last 15 years.

Local celebrity Karl Sergison of Sergi’s is a fine example. With his delicious food available to buy in the Red Lion Quarter’s food hall, and his skills being exhibited in the demonstration kitchen, not only can you experience the talented chef at work but you can enjoy his take on the freshly prepared food, all sourced and sold in the food hall too. The former buildings in Red Lion Street had been derelict for more than ten years and had become a local eyesore. The District Council purchased the whole site which was identified as an ideal town centre location, close to the facilities of the water taxi, within close proximity to the market place and likely to encourage increased footfall into the area.

The creation of a satellite of Boston College in the district will enable many of the local population to benefit from a range of vocational training courses and the development of IT skills in a central part of the town. The training restaurant ‘SAGE ‘ (operated by the College) has received the backing of Jason Atherton, a Michelin star chef, who has already agreed to aid the promotion of the facility. It will also benefit students and apprentices by enabling them to train in a realistic commercial environment.

John Hayes said, “As minister for Further Education and Apprenticeships, I am proud to see such a momentous building combine magnificent opportunities for the area.” He was then delighted to declare the building open, cut the ribbon and unveil the plaque that will mark a memorable day for all those that put their hearts and sole into the Red Lion Quarter, a celebration of our local community and our www.bulleydavey.co.uk food heritage.

The appointment comes as CLA members in the region take increasing advantage of the organisation’s professional advisory services and rely on its lobbyists to give the rural East Midlands a voice in the corridors of power. Avoid Wildfires in Dry Weather Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue are offering safety advice to prevent people accidentally setting grass and wildfires in the dry weather. Over the last bank holiday weekend, there were 19 grassland fires in Lincolnshire, compared to just 5 over the same time period last year. Sean Taylor, Group Manager - Community Fire Safety, said: “In warm, dry weather, do not have fires in the open as grass fields and woodland can be particularly susceptible to fires that can spread extremely quickly. “It’s important to make sure you don’t drop any burning materials such as cigarettes or matches while you’re out enjoying the countryside and the warm weather in Lincolnshire. Taking your rubbish home not only helps protect the environment but could also prevent a fire; glass particularly can reflect the sun’s rays and start fires.”

I will update you with the results in the June edition. Holbeach Parish Council did not have enough candidates to fill all the seats, so all those who put themselves forward were elected uncontested. I was also elected, uncontested, as the District Councillor for the Holbeach Hurn Ward. Crime statistics for Holbeach Parish were discussed and it was stressed that these were reported crimes only, so the emphasis is on you to ensure you report all crimes, including anti-social behaviour – this does make a difference! Criminal damage, mostly in Church Street was the single biggest statistic for March. The non emergency number to call the Police on is 0300 111 0300. If you want more detailed information about the area the Lincolnshire Police website is well worth a visit - www.lincs.police.uk The priorities for the panel for the next quarter are: • Anti-social behaviour in Church Street, Back Lane and Stukeley Gardens. • Publicising the Lincolnshire Police website so that you have access to all the latest information. • Clean up of Damgate pond and relocation of bench. The next panel meeting will be in July, so watch out on the public notice boards in town for the date and venue. Neighbourhood Planning is coming to Holbeach. Holbeach has been successful in gaining £20,000 to create a plan for Holbeach and at the time of writing South Holland District Council is awaiting confirmation of the scheme and how it works from the government. What does this mean to you? The following is a direct quote from the government, “Neighbourhood Planning gives local people a real voice in deciding the look and feel of development in their area, from determining the locations of shops, offices and schools to setting standards of design for new housing.” Minister Greg Clark said, “ Planning has increasingly become one of the most contentious issues in Britain, with communities becoming pitted against development. Often the reason is that local people feel alienated from the planning process, with no influence over changes to their area. Neighbourhood Planning will help to reverse that position by giving communities the ability to shape development in their area rather than being dictated to.” Holbeach is one of only 50 areas in the country to be successful with an application for funding a neighbourhood plan, so watch out in the coming months for how you can be involved in the process. Finally, I hope you will have noticed the vast improvement to traffic flow in the town as a result of a new traffic light system recently installed, which has proved far more effective than even I imagined!

National roll-out for Incapacity Benefit assessments - In England

The government has begun a national roll-out to convert claims for people who are getting some sickness and disability benefits to Employment and Support Allowance (ESA). The benefits affected are: • Incapacity Benefit • Severe Disablement Allowance (SDA) • Income Support based on disability grounds. If you’re currently getting one of these benefits, the Department for Work and Pensions will write to you between now and March 2014, inviting you to an assessment. However, if you reach state pension age at any time before 6 April 2014, you will not be affected by these changes. If the assessment finds you meet the qualifying conditions for ESA, you will be automatically transferred to this benefit. You won’t have to make a new claim. If you’re currently getting Incapacity Benefit or Severe Disablement Allowance (SDA), your benefit will be converted to contribution-based ESA. Contribution-based ESA is usually worked out according to how much you’ve paid in National Insurance contributions. But if you’re switching from Incapacity Benefit or SDA, it won’t matter how many NI contributions you’ve paid. If you’re currently getting Income Support, your benefit will be converted to income-related ESA. If your benefit is converted to ESA, you will be paid the higher rate of ESA straightaway. Usually ESA is paid at a lower rate for the first 13 weeks of the claim. You may also be entitled to extra money while your benefit is switched to ESA. This is called a transitional allowance. It makes sure that you won’t be getting less money than you were receiving before. This extra money will eventually stop. If the assessment finds that you’re not entitled to ESA, your Incapacity Benefit, SDA or Income Support will stop. You will then have to make a new claim for Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) or another benefit that suits your needs. If this affects you, you can expect the following from Jobcentre Plus, part of the Dept for Work and Pensions: Step 1 - A letter informing you that changes are about to commence and what to do next; Step 2 - A telephone call to give you more information and to find out if you need any extra help; Step 3 - A medical questionnaire to fill out; Step 4 - A telephone call from Atos Healthcare to arrange a Work Capability Assessment, if required; Step 5 - If required, you will be asked to attend the Work Capability

If you attend an assessment and are unhappy with the way it’s carried out, or you don’t agree with its outcome, you can get advice on what to do from your nearest Citizens Advice Bureau. Citizens Advice are keen to monitor the process, to see whether people are treated fairly and whether any medical evidence they have is taken properly into account. We are particularly keen to collect evidence about certain points in the system, such as the decision maker’s phone call to you when you are found fit for work. In some cases this call may be genuinely helpful, but we are concerned that there is a danger of it being used to persuade people that it isn’t worth appealing. We also want to build a picture of the general administration of the migration process and find out how clients are personally affected. Look after Yourself Over the Holiday Season If you are visiting a hot country where you will be sunbathing or spending time outside it is vital that you protect your skin from the sun. People with fair skin and freckles are at the highest risk of sunburn, and over exposure to harmful UV rays from the sun is one of the biggest causes of skin cancer. Always use suntan lotion; ideally the lowest you should ever use is SPF15. If you have fair or freckled skin, or have a lot of moles use a higher factor as you will be at an even greater risk of burning. For children do not cover them up in anything less than SPF 50. Remember that although a tan may look attractive now, it does age the skin so as you get older if you don’t adequately protect the skin you will wrinkle and your skin will appear more aged than it should. To help replenish the moisture back into your frazzled skin use after sun lotion - my top tip is to keep the bottle of lotion in the fridge so that it’s beautifully cool when you apply it to the skin. If you are a bit panicked that you aren’t looking bronzed enough, rather than hitting the oil slap on some fake tan. For a gradual tan use one of the

many gradual moisturing tanning lotions that are available to build on the colour, or for evenings before you don your flirty summer dress why not try an Instant Tan Make Up, guaranteed to give you an instant glow. Protect your hair from the damaging rays of the sun with a protective leave-in conditioner; the UV absorbents and amino acids in a leave in conditioner will help your hair retain its vital moisture and form an invisible barrier to help protect your tresses against dryness and split ends. From 14th – 20th May, it’s Adult Learners’ Week. Founded and co-ordinated by the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE), Adult Learners’ Week is held to celebrate and inspire adult learning. It’s a festival of learning to raise awareness of how learning can change lives, whether you want to learn a new qualification to further your career or just have fun! Supported by thousands of organisations across the UK, the week continues to be the largest drive for learning of its kind – and impressively, it’s celebrated in over 55 countries throughout the world!

One Swallow can Make Your Summer by Jeremy Eyeons

At the end of lasts months article I mentioned about seeing your first swallow of the summer,well I saw my first one in early April. And what fine birds they are too; the sight of them flicking over the fields again, hawking insects and flying in and around houses and buildings is almost as welcome as summer itself. Barn swallows (hirundo rustica) are small birds with glossy blue backs, paler underparts and long distinctive tail streamers. The house martin, sand martin and swift are all very similar birds so it would be prudent to swot up on the differences. If you are really fortunate you may come across fellow-migrant,the (very rare) red-rumped swallow, which has a streaky underbelly and a pale rusty red/brown head colouring. ‘Our’ swallows spend their winter in (the much warmer) South Africa; returning to our shores during April and May via the western coast of Africa (although some birds have been known to take a more direct route over the Sahara), over Morocco, across eastern Spain, the Pyrenees and western France. They migrate during the day, often feeding during flight, covering sometimes 200 miles per day with a maximum speed of 30/35 mph!

They need rain for wet mud which they use to construct their nests. During a hot, dry summer there may be limited mud available and young birds can die from heat exhaustion and also hunger if there is a shortage of insects. On the positive side, however, swallows have few enemies. Few predators are quick or agile enough to catch a swallow during flight, although hobbies and sparrowhawks have been known to succeed. Swallows and their nests are fully protected under the Wildlife and Countyside Act 1981 which stipulates that it is an offence to intentionally kill, injure or take any wild bird. It is also illegal to damage or destroy swallow eggs and their nests (whilst it is in use or being built). So enjoy these wonderful birds whilst they are with us, they really can add enjoyment to your summer!

Swallow populations usually fluctuate, being significantly affected by the weather.

Ear, what’s that? Travel sickness occurs when the balance centre in the inner ear sends messages to the brain conflicting with messages being sent by the sensory cortex, whose response is to then trigger vomiting and salivating.

“As many as one in six cats and dogs succumb to travel sickness of some kind caused by stress and discomfort of road trips!” Medicine Medications such as antihistamines and sedatives have previously been available, along with herbal remedies, which can be used to subdue the vomiting response. However a new product has recently been introduced to veterinarians which lacks the unwanted side affects of drowsiness brought on by sedation and allergy medications. The suitability of the medication for your pet would need to be discussed with your veterinarian since it is not an appropriate choice for dogs with cardiac or liver disease.

A little anxious? Anxiety plays a big factor in travel sickness, but anxiety alone can be a factor in cancelled trips if a pet is not gradually desensitised to the idea of traveling in a moving vehicle. Many ‘first’ journeys for pets are traumatic – a pup being separated from mother and siblings, a trip to the vet for a first set of needles – and it can be difficult to overcome the negative associations pets can have with getting into the car.

It is important therefore, to take the time to provide positive car ride experiences for the pet, so they understand that getting the car can be a good thing.Try having them get into the car, and then just sitting in the car till they become calm and then letting them out to play a game of ball with them. From there, progress to starting the car with the pet inside but do not drive anywhere. Then travel short distances and gradually lengthen the journeys you take, driving slowly and sticking to relatively straight roads where possible. Make sure the journey ends somewhere positive – drive to the park or see some doggy friends.

Positive association For cats, even the sight and sound of the cat carrier appearing in the house will often send them into fight or flight mode. If your cat develops anxiety around the cat carrier then integrate the carrier as if it is part of the furniture. Leave it sitting out, with a comfy blanket inside to entice them to sleep inside it. Feed them their meals inside the carrier also, to encourage positive associations with the crate.

Food for thought When’s dinner? With any journey, it is best to leave a considerable time between feeding and getting in the car. It is best to feed a fat-free meal around three hours before you plan to begin your journey.

Take five! During your drive, stop every 2 hours or so to give them a chance to relieve themselves and to stretch their legs. Remember to carry some bottled water and a bowl to offer them during these breaks.

Sport either club or county finals day in April. For those who make the ‘A ’team grade there are mens, ladies and mixed county league against other clubs within Lincolnshire. The mens‘A’team are current Division 1 champions! Spalding IBC has a very good name both on and off the green, with the club having plenty of success at national and international level. They say bowls is an old mans game, but times are changing and they have enjoyed a lot of success with our juniors. Run on a Saturday morning by trained coaches many good players have been discovered. The biggest success was winning the National Under 25 club double rink in 2004. At present Spalding is home to, two Under 25 lady internationals, have had two male Junior Internationals in the last 5 years and this year, four of our ladies became the youngest ever to win the national fours title, and now go on to represent England in the British Isles championships in Wales next year. Much of this is due to our coaching manager Colin Wilson. Spalding’s current Club Captains bowls career probably shows how the club’s support and the process of training can develop fantastic players. Joining at 18, Graham Smith played junior bowls to gain valuable experience, moving through leagues and into County League teams, he has now won numerous Club and County titles, been in theWorld Top 20 for the last 6 years and has been a full Men’s International for the past 3 seasons. A feast of good bowls is when the club hosts The Spalding Open in December, which this season had 6 of the world top 20 playing.

Get Up, Get Out! Many of us can get caught up in the routine of daily life and this can sometimesmean we don’t even leave the house! Spalding Indoor Bowls Club offers an alternative to this way of life. Players of all abilities are greeted with open arms into a friendly atmosphere in a modern stadium with good facilities. For the beginner, taster sessions are offered, followed by training sessions, run by qualified and experienced coaches. For those who want to take this one step further there are improver sessions, which, if followed up by joining the club can lead to many options. Individuals can join league teams or groups can get together and create new league teams; there are mixed leagues throughout the day, starting at 10am. Spalding Indoor Bowls Club are also very proud of the very successful ladies section, who have their own league on a Tuesday afternoon. It’s not just weekdays but at weekends there is always great fun and company on offer with the very popular Friendly Section. These games are followed by a great meal supplied by caterers J2. A place for everything, and everything in its place; how hard can it be?

ver the years we collect an unbelievable amount of clutter. Some things we hang on to for sentimental reasons, others we keep hold of – ‘just in case’, and sometimes it’s simply a matter of family growth. But how do we contain it all, especially now minimalist is the new trend? New houses never seem to offer enough storage space, whilst older properties offer space that is awkward and hard to utilise.

So, what can be done?

Start by looking around your home to consider the amount of storage space you realistically need. Identify your problem areas and be honest; would a clear-out help to free up storage space or is it definitely a matter of having to accommodate more? If it’s about accommodating more, look at updating single-functioning pieces of furniture with multi-functional ones to provide quick fix solutions. If updating furniture is not an option then simply decide what items need to be hidden away in order to generate more room. Identify any ‘dead’ space around your home – obvious places like walls and corners and not so obvious places like half-filled cupboards, single rail wardrobes, space under beds etc. Then search the internet or go down to your local DIY store to obtain some inspiration and possible solutions.

Hallways are notorious as dumping grounds. No matter how small your space you should find a way to accommodate visitors coats and shoes. If you have no carpet on the stairs, consider getting the bottom steps made into pull out drawers and if you have available space underneath your stairs, consider converting it. Pull out storage works great if your hallway is wide enough, if not; add shelves or use it to store household items such as the vacuum cleaner and ironing board.

Kitchen

Think about how you can utilise the space more effectively. Do you really need all those gadgets on show? Think about a drop down TV, or a pull out/drop-leaf table that will help to maximise minimal space. Stacking storage systems are available for internal cupboard areas that really help to maximise them to the full. Add more storage space by simply adding wire baskets to the inside of the doors. Keep utensil and cutlery drawers in order by investing in drawer dividers and organise the space under the sink by collating all cleaning materials together. If you are big on recycling then stay on top of it

by having designated areas for each of the materials you recycle. Add shelves or wire baskets to store your fresh fruit and vegetables and if your kitchen can accommodate a kitchen trolley, opt for one that offers a butcher block and some storage facilities.

Bathroom

Consider installing a bath panel that pulls down as these are great for storing bathroom items like shower gel, soaps, shampoos etc. Purchase a hammock with suckers, or invest in some string bags with hooks – these are terrific for storing kids’ toys or individual bits and pieces. If space allows, opt for a mirrored cabinet – these come in various shapes and sizes and provide excellent storage areas. Add over the door coat hooks to house spare towels, laundry bags, or individual wash bags.

Bedrooms

If you haven’t got floor to ceiling wardrobes, consider investing in some. Alternatively, think about internal fitments. Most wardrobes can accommodate two hanging rails. Install a pull-out trouser rail and you may even find you have enough space to install some shoe racks underneath. Purchase some hanging pockets that hook over the top of a door for housing shoes, scarves and belts and if you haven’t got a bed with drawers, make full use of the space underneath by investing in durable storage boxes or vacuum bags for seasonal storage solutions.

Living Room

As the main room of the house, this can get a little messy if items do not have a defined space. kid’s toys can be stored in blanket boxes, wicker boxes and storage pouffes or hidden behind multi-functional screens. Large multi-storage units are available that will house all game consoles, gaming equipment, audio equipment, CDs and DVDs that you have.

Whatever storage solutions you need, don’t be afraid to think outside the box. You may think space is an issue but there are lots of different storage ideas available and with a little imagination you will be surprised at what you can achieve.

Its styling, both inside and out, is geared towards making petrol-heads drool. New bumpers, enlarged rear quarter panels and a lower ride height give the car a more muscular presence than ever before.

Introduced at the end of last year, the 2011 Subaru WRX STi is a substantial upgrade to the high performance version of the Impreza. And it is a welcome comeback, because it sees a four-door saloon rejoin the range after a three-year absence from the UK.

Inside, the quality of the cabin materials has been upgraded, and the driver and passenger are assured of a secure and comfortable seating position thanks to the introduction of all-new RECARO bucket seats. Behind the wheel, your feet settle easily onto the drilled aluminium pedals and you instantly feel at one with the car. The thick, leather-wrapped steering wheel gives you easy access to audio switches and cruise control buttons, meaning you can concentrate on the road ahead without taking your hands off the wheel. The only thing left is a quick press of the push-button engine starter to bring the vehicle to life.

HE SUBARU WRX STI is like nothing else on the road. It combines power with precision and rally-bred performance with everyday practicality, putting it in a class of its own.

The major difference between Subaru and other brands begins with the balance and control that comes from its permanent Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and Boxer engine. But, unlike most performance cars, the Japanese motor manufacturer’s WRX STI doesn’t just excite while in motion.

Aficionados of Subaru performance motors will love the sound the car makes when it starts up; a new exhaust system, with a bigger centre muffler and larger diameter piping, enhances the engine’s iconic boxer ‘burble’. And at the core of the WRX STI beats the heart of a champion — the turbocharged 2.5-litre Subaru Boxer engine. The lump propels the car from 0-62mph in just 5.2 seconds and the

smooth 6-speed manual transmission lets you savour every sweep of the glowing red rev counter. As you match revs to extract the most of the engine’s charitable torque curve, you feel the 158mph performance potential of the WRX STI firmly within your grasp. But the fun isn’t all about being first off the lights because, unlike most cars, with the WRX STI you control the set up. The Subaru features a default setting of 41 / 59 per cent front / rear torque distribution for optimum balance, and you can adjust this while on the move using the four-mode (Driver’s Control Centre Differential) system. The WRX STI also incorporates Multi-Mode VDC (Vehicle Dynamics Control) – Subaru’s version of electronic stability control (ESC), allowing you to modify the point of intervention of this electronic driver aid to suit your own tastes. Subaru has further tuned its three-mode SI-Drive (Subaru Intelligent Drive) system, which can be used to adjust the engine’s characteristics to best suit a variety of driving conditions. You may have noticed during this review that there has been very little mention of the name ‘Impreza’. Well, there’s a reason for that – it seems those six letters (WRX STI) are so synonymous with automotive exhilaration that the moniker has been dropped and the new model is now simply known as the ‘Subaru WRX STI’. But whatever it’s called, the car will continue to be a superstar – certainly in the hearts and minds of speedy Subaru purists.
