Athletes Can Apply for Funding Applications for the Lincolnshire Elite Athlete Programme (LEAP) 2012 are now open. Sportsmen and women from Lincolnshire, who are competing at a National or International level, are encouraged to apply for the programme for funding and support throughout 2012. Rachel Belcher, LEAP Project Officer at Lincolnshire Sports Partnership, said: “This year, we have funded 50 athletes and donated nearly £10,000 to sportsmen and women across Lincolnshire. Next year, to celebrate the London 2012 Games, we want to support

athletes who are aiming to compete at an Olympics or Paralympics, and want as many athletes as possible to apply for the programme.” An application form for LEAP 2012 can be found online at www.lincolnshiresports.com. Chattertons Solicitors IT specialist, Liam Osborne, has raised over £1,200, mostly supported by staff from across the firm, for the Lincolnshire and

Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance by doing a Bungee Jump in Switzerland. The firm chose the Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance as their Charity of

the Year for 2011/2012. The Verzasca Dam in Switzerland was not only used to film James Bond’s “Goldeneye” but provided Liam with the chance to jump off the second highest Bungee in the world which stands at 220 metres. He left the UK on the 4 August and flew to Milan before driving to Ticino in southern Switzerland. The jump took place on the 5 August and Liam returned back to the UK the following day.

Four town centre conservation areas in Spalding, Crowland, Holbeach and Long Sutton have been earmarked under the scheme. Traditional repairs and work to reinstate the authentic look of commercial properties could be part paid for through the Partnership Schemes in Conservation Areas (PSICA).

The future of a South Holland leisure centre will be debated in the coming months with a range of future options on the table. South Holland District Councillors will be examining sports provision in the district with the future of The Castle Sports Complex in Spalding at the heart of the agenda. The centre was opened nearly 40 years ago and the council is in the process of paving a way forward that will take into account the current economic climate, involve residents and benefit the whole of the district. Key sporting organisations, businesses and political figures will be encouraged to participate in future discussions on sporting facilities.

Councillor Howard Johnson, South Holland Portfolio Holder for Property, said: “This is a big decision for our community. We are looking at a number of solutions and following any decision will consult widely on the way foward. In the current financial times we will not be able to please everyone so there will have to be difficult decisions. “The Castle Sports Complex is 40 years old and it is time to decide its future. We need to consider the options available to the council that provides the most cost effective provision for the community, from doing nothing, replacing it or refurbishing it. These are the issues that we will look at.”

Important Changes To Housing Benefit If you are under 35, single and currently receive benefit towards renting a one bedroom property you will only receive financial assistance towards renting a room in a shared house.

HOUSING benefit claimants in South Holland are being warned that help towards their rent is likely to be reduced from next year. Changes to housing benefit legislation were introduced in April this year, which saw a reduction in the amount of Local Housing Allowance that some people were eligible to receive. Claimants currently receiving nine months’ protection as a result of this legislation change will no longer do so from January 1 next year.

Return of the Pumpkins Organisers are already getting pumped up for this year’s spectacular Spalding Pumpkin Parade. With just two months to the annual festival a sackful of events and activities have already been drawn up that won’t ‘squash’ your expectations. Thousands of youngsters and their families are expected to stroll through town in a sea of orange in recognition of South Holland’s status as pumpkingrowing capital of Europe.

The maximum rate of housing benefit will also be limited to the rate for a four bedroom property and not five bedrooms.

Food, fancy dress, spectacular fireworks, entertainment including music and drama, and the romance of the Flower Queen being escorted through the town centre in a pumpkin carriage have all been lined up for the town’s centrepiece event.

Current claimants will be notified of their new entitlements by the South Holland District Council when their annual review is due.

An exciting programme is being drawn up to celebrate all things pumpkin with thousands of South Holland residents and visitors expected to descend upon Spalding town centre on October 7.

South Holland District Council Deputy Leader Councillor Nick Worth said: “The Pumpkin Parade is one of the highlights of the year in South Holland and we are looking forward to another colourful celebration of harvest time in which whole families can get involved.”

Avoid being taken for a ride by rogue doorstep traders

During the summer months, there is often an increase in rogue traders who knock on people’s doors, offering to do work. They often target older people. They may say they’ve been doing work in your area and have spotted your house needs work doing. This could be to do with your roof, paving, general building work, or offering to do insulation or install burglar alarms. They often end up running off with your money without ever doing the work, doing a very poor job, or doing work that never actually needed doing. Doorstep selling is when you buy something from someone face-to-face but away from trade premises, for example, at home or from a salesperson at your workplace. If you buy something from a doorstep sale, as well as the usual rights you have when you buy from a shop, you also have the right to a seven-day ‘cooling off’ period. To have this right, the goods or service you buy must cost over £35. It does not matter whether or not you invited the salesperson into your home. The cooling off period gives you seven days in which you can change your mind and cancel your order, without having to pay anything. The sales person must tell you that you have this right, in writing, when you place your order. If they don’t, you can cancel your order at any time and get your money back - even if this is after seven days. If a trader doesn’t tell you about your right to cancel an order made in a doorstep sale, you should complain to Consumer Direct on 08454 040506. It is not an offence to knock on someone’s door and try to canvas or trade but this initial call can sometimes lead on to criminal offences. These offences can include distraction burglary or unnecessary home maintenance that is unwanted and both can cause occupants to lose a large quantity of money.

Here are some top tips to help you avoid getting involved with a dodgy trader: • don’t ever agree to work or sign anything on the spot – take their full details and say you’ll get back to them • check their details – they should give you their business name and

address and not just a mobile phone number. Then check these to see if they are real • Check if they are a member of a professional trade body, belong to a local authority assured trader scheme, or to the TrustMark scheme, which can help you find trustworthy tradesmen in your area. For more details about these schemes, go to www.direct.gov.uk • Ask them for details of other customers they did work for and contact them to check this out • Don’t get taken in by their sales banter – they might claim there is a special offer on only for that day or that they’ll get sacked if you don’t employ them. This kind of talk is likely to be a sales pitch and you shouldn’t take it seriously • Always get more than one quote before employing someone – it’s usually best to contact other traders your friends or family have recommended • Don’t ever make a cash payment upfront – a reliable trader won’t ask for money before doing the job – not even if they need materials. If they run a business, they should have enough money to cover these costs themselves and only ask for payment once they’ve completed the job, or done a reasonable amount of work • If you think a trader is trying to con you speak to Consumer Direct on 08454 040506. They can report anything suspicious to your local Trading Standards Department • If the trader becomes aggressive or threatens you, this is criminal behaviour and you should call the police straight away.

How does it work?

In your first meeting your Consultant will weigh and measure you and then discuss the range of Cambridge weight management programmes available. Together you will decide which programme best suits your lifestyle and dieting needs – a major factor

So, you’re either bored of counting sheep or have found that the little furry creatures don’t cut it for you when you want to fall asleep fast. Here are some other tricks you can use so that you’re asleep almost as soon as your head hits the pillow.

This could be as simple as opening or closing a window. Or it could involve changing your duvet for one with a more appropriate tog rating.

This suggestion isn’t a five minute solution but it is one that, with practice over time, is a great way to unwind and let you go to sleep faster.

It’s too easy to think that you’ll do this tomorrow - that isn’t an option if you want to get a good night’s sleep tonight. Think about what makes you restless in bed. Too hot? Too cold? Make sure you rectify this as soon as you can.

Choose a method that you get along with, whether that’s meditation, hypnosis or some other method of getting your mind to calm down. Once you learn this trick, you’ll be able to get to sleep fast no matter what.

Pencil in some relaxation time before you go to sleep - whether it’s the mug of warm milk like you used to drink as a child or a relaxation MP3 or anything else that will allow it to untangle those last few things you were working on and allow you to get to sleep fast. Cut out the caffeine later in the day It’s that old culprit again! Caffeine is generally bad news if your aim is to get a good night’s rest. If you really need an almost constant caffeine fix, experiment for a few days to find out how late you can drink a caffeinated

British Food Fortnight - Celebrating British Produce

This year it’s the tenth anniversary of one of the most spectacular events in the food calendar - the British Food Fortnight. Running from17th September until 2nd October, this is the largest national celebration of British food, with organisations from all across the UK food industry getting involved to champion fresh, local and seasonal produce, as well as produce specific to individual regions. Here in Lincolnshire, we have a lot to celebrate locally - from the produce grown in our Fenland silty soils and our tasty local foods (sausages, pork pies, cheese and plum bread to name but a few!), to our local pubs and restaurants. And, of course, there is our impressive food production industry!

How did British Food Fortnight begin?

British Food Fortnight was first launched in 2002 at the same time as Harvest Festival week. Established just after the Foot and Mouth crisis, the idea behind the event was to draw the public’s attention to British food and promote British produce. Since then, it’s become an integral event for the nation to celebrate – the general public as well as everyone involved in the food business. Love British Food (www.lovebritishfood.co.uk), founded in 2008 by the organisers of British Food Fortnight to provide consumers, retailers, caterers and schools with a one-stopshop of advice on everything they need to know about British food, believe that the event is more than just a date in the diary. ‘It is proving an important influencer in engaging the retail, catering, education and volunteer sectors and in establishing a more robust market for Britain’s food.’

Who’s getting involved?

Throughout the two weeks, organisations all over Britain will join in with the celebration of British food - whether its caterers hosting cooking classes, local education centres running food education courses, tasting sessions in local shops and food promotions in supermarkets. Pubs and restaurants involved will be launching special British menus and experimenting with new dishes and local ingredients.

I’m a consumer - how can I join in?

The British Food Fortnight have put together 14 ways for you to get involved in the event. One idea for each day! 1. When you are shopping make a special effort to seek out British food. When next in the pub, team up a local beer with a local speciality. 5. Think beyond the chicken nugget when planning a family meal out. 6. Explore food from different regions of Britain as a fun way of experiencing our culture and heritage. 7. Ask the caterers who provide the food for your staff or

school restaurant if they will consider serving distinctly-British produce. 8. Encourage teachers in your children’s school to run foodrelated activities during the Fortnight. 9. Cook a British meal for friends. 10. Planning a family outing? This year’s event starts the countdown to 2012 when British Food Fortnight will run at the same time as the London Olympics. The aim is to stage the biggest showcase of British food the world has ever seen - to really show off British produce. The organisers are using this year’s event to rally every pub, restaurant, hotel and food service outlet in the country to start planning their promotions now, so they are ready for the opportunities that the Olympics will bring. Blackberry and Apple Crumble

For me, this is where Autumn begins, yummy comfort food for me! A crumble is perfect as the nights draw in and the weather turns.

Ingredients: For the filling:

Three large apples, peeled, quartered & cored. Two teaspoons of cinnamon. 100g demerara sugar. 300g blackberries.

For the crumble topping: 175 plain flour. One teaspoon of cinnamon. 140g soft brown sugar. 35g porridge oats. 180g unsalted butter (hard).

Own a dog? Know the rules ...

Dog owners in the UK must abide to certain rules that apply to owning a dog. It is important to understand the laws and make responsible choices as a result. The rules have been implemented with dog welfare and public welfare in mind. Since the introduction of by-laws new cases of dog attacks have decreased significantly.

Scoop the poop! Everyone has stepped in dog poop and it’s gross! The Dogs (Fouling of Land) Act 1996 states that dogs should not be allowed to foul in public areas by their owners, and if the dog does foul, it is the owner’s responsibility to clean it up. A few more reasons to scoop poop:

Off the leash Under The Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005 owners could be fined up to £1,000 for breaching orders to control dogs. Although local authorities differ, general offences are:

• Animal waste may contain harmful organisms such as Giardia, Salmonella and E. coli that can be transmitted to humans and other animals through ingesting waste particles, typically through water.

• Failing to scoop the poop, allowing a dog off leash.

• Roundworms and hookworms deposited by infected animals can live in the soil for long periods of time and be transmitted to other animals and humans.

• Allowing a dog to run freely on land where dogs are excluded.

• Being a responsible pet owner and removing your pet’s waste can encourage more areas and parks to accept pets. • Your community will appreciate your good manners.

• Not restraining your dog when asked to do so.

• A cap on the number of dogs you are allowed to take on to land.

Breeding To breed five or more litters of puppies a year requires a license under the Breeding and Sale of Dogs (Welfare) Act 1999. Regardless, if you are breeding for business purposes, you must be licensed even if you are breeding fewer than five litters.

To protect the welfare of the dogs, a bitch under 12 months old cannot be bred; breeders are not allowed to whelp two litters of puppies from the same bitch within a 12 month period and must also keep an accurate record of puppies, not selling them until they have reached eight weeks of age. Dog tagging It is a sad fact that thousands of pets go missing every year and are not returned to their owner because they have no form of identification. As animals cannot speak for themselves, it is extremely important to know that they are properly identified so that if lost, when found, they can be returned to their relieved owner as quickly as possible. The Control of Dogs Order 1992 states that any dog in a public place must wear a collar with the name and address (including postcode) of the owner engraved or written on it, or engraved on a tag. Your telephone number is optional (but advisable). Most tags can only have a maximum of four lines engraved on each side. And the more characters on a line, the smaller the engraving.

Dangerous dogs The Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 was brought into effect to protect the public and other animals from dogs that are deemed dangerous or unpredictable. In particular, the act targeted dogs that were dogs bred for fighting, such as pit bull terriers and Japanese tosas, or any dog appearing to being bred for these purposes. As such, it is illegal to breed from any dog with these characteristics. Additionally, the sale of these dogs is prohibited. Any dog that is deemed dangerous or unpredictable should be muzzled while out in public.

Help Children Deal with Bullies Bullying, what is it? Bullying is a serious problem and one which parents need to be aware of. Of all the things parents have to worry about - did you ever think your child’s peers were one of them? According to the US Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration... “Bullying is aggressive behavior that is intentional and that involves an imbalance of power or strength; typically repeated over time.” Bullying can take many forms: Physical - hitting, punching, kicking, etc Verbal – threats, teasing or name calling Social Exclusion – nonverbal or emotional, being excluded from a group of friends, stopped from making new friends, manipulation, being the victim of vicious rumors, repeated teasing of someone who clearly exhibits signs of distress Cyber – insulting or threatening electronic messages by email or instant messaging Bullying, “A new issue?” This issue is certainly nothing new – everyone can think back on their younger days and remember the playground or neighbourhood bully of their childhood. Such memories will certainly bring with them differing emotions depending on your viewpoint – that of being the bully, just an innocent bystander, or the victim of that bully’s wrath. Just because it is not a new issue it should not be brushed aside as simply “just how kids are” and nothing to be worried about. In recent years this issue has received widespread attention as people are now realising that it is much more serious than simply a natural part of growing up. As any victim will attest to, bullying, of any form, can have severe and lasting effects.

Encourage the development of any talents of hobbies – another good self-esteem booster. Stay involved and supportive of your child’s school and extra-curricular activities. Do not allow your child to hang around empty playgrounds or stay late at school alone. Teach them to always use the buddy system. Do not allow your child to carry large sums of money or valuable possessions. Sometimes children exhibit certain behaviours that irritate or provoke others. If this is the case, help your child to find more suitable ways to interact with friends and peer groups. Always keep the lines of communication open with your child. Encourage them to tell you about troubling situations. It is important that any child that is experiencing bullying has somewhere safe that he or she can return home to and openly discuss issues, it is only then that you can help them deal with the situation.

How do we stop bullying? As previously mentioned, bullying is not an issue that should be brushed aside as “just how kids are.” If you suspect your child may be a bully, or you suspect your child may be the victim of a bully, you should act quickly to intervene and diffuse the situation. In either situation the first step is always to talk to your child and maintain open communication. An Introduction To Golf Now that you have become interested in playing golf, how do you actually go about getting started? Lots of people just go down to their local driving range or par three course, hire some clubs and start hitting. Playing golf looks easy doesn’t it!

Mark Jackson, resident golf professional at Toft Hotel Golf Club, explains why you should try the sport. Why do people play golf? Below are a few points to help you understand more about golf and how to start enjoying this wonderful and highly addictive game. Social: Golf is a great way to socialise with friends or to meet new people Exercise: Not many people realise this, but you can walk around 6 miles when playing 18 holes! Competition: Get your competitive juices flowing! Whether you have only been playing a few months or you are a tournament playing professional, with golf’s handicap system everyone can play on a level playing field.

Lessons: The best advice you can get is visit your local PGA Professional. They can advise you on everything to do with golf - some specialise on coaching, and they can help you improve your game more than a designer set of clubs ever will! Different types of coaching will include: individual lessons, group lessons or a quick taster session. Equipment: Each club is composed of a shaft with a grip and a club head. Woods are used for long distance shots and irons are used for shots from a variety of distances. Rules and Etiquette: My recommendation would be pick up a copy of the “rules of golf”. This book is free of charge and a copy can be found at any golf course. The rules and etiquette have been put in place to make golf safer and more enjoyable for golfers and to minimise possible damage to golf equipment and courses. Where to play: Golf is not always played on a championship 18 hole golf course. It can be enjoyed at many different facilities: from a ‘putt putt’ course in Skegness, to a 9 hole pitch and putt or a local pay and play public.
