What’s On

Welcome

to the April issue This feels very strange for me to be saying but this will be my last welcome for a few months as I am due to have a few months off on maternity leave. I know I am leaving the magazine in the very capable hands of Vicky, however this has been my baby for over 2 years and will be difficult to not live and breathe all things Simply for a few months! I have definitely planned things right with a summer baby, so I am looking forward to some time off in the sunshine. This issue is one of my favourites of the year as it is full of excitement for the summer months, with the warm weather teasing us and the clocks going forward it won’t be long until we are relegating boots to the back of the wardrobe and pulling out the flip flops. So, I will be back later in the year to update you on my news and will be back working from the Autumn. Have a great summer!

Hayley x Hello!

Aside from Mother’s Day, my favourite day of March falls on the last Sunday when the clocks go forward. Lighter evenings, Spring weather and the distinct feeling that summer is on its way! And then it’s into April and Easter and all the fun associated with it. Spring is definitely my favourite season! Within the issue Spring is very much in the air with articles on Easter, gardening and days out. We also consider what to do with our furry friends when going on holiday and where to start if you are able to rehome an animal who is looking for their forever home. Enjoy the issue.

Could your staff help with Boston charity shop revamp? An organisation that supports homeless, lonely and vulnerable people is trying to attract a group of volunteers to give its charity shop a revamp. The Centrepoint Outreach shop, in Red Lion Street, Boston, is the main source of income for the charity and cannot be closed for a long period. Elizabeth Hopkins, Centrepoint Outreach chief executive, said: “We already have a team of dedicated volunteers who put in vast amounts of work in our shop and to assist our project workers to help the vulnerable and homeless and now we need a bit of extra outside assistance. The work we do relies upon the money we raise through the shop so we don’t want to see it closed for any longer than absolutely necessary.” Lincolnshire Community and Voluntary Services (LCVS) is working with Centrepoint to try to drum up the volunteers. LCVS runs an Employer Supported Volunteer project that aims to encourage businesses to mobilise their staff to assist with community projects. David Fannin, LCVS chief executive, said: “This would be the perfect project for a local employer who has a strong social conscience. Employers who have supported similar group social action in the past have said it is the most effective and best value team-building they have done. Employer Supported Volunteering benefits the business with the added reward of helping the community,

Old money Do you remember with a certain fondness the old coinage, before decimalisation? When a ha’penny could buy you four fruit cocktail chews (or the rather un-pc black jacks), the hefty jangle of a collection of thre’penny bits in your pocket, or the comforting feel of a half crown. If you have any of that old coinage cluttering up the corner of a drawer it still has a value to some. It is used as a solid reference for the elderly and those suffering dementia,

particularly those most in need.” The shop has already sourced donations of paint but some additional equipment, such as paint brushes and rollers would also be useful. A plasterer may also be needed to complete a bit of patching up on the walls before the painting can get under way. It is hoped the painting can be completed in two days if a team of 15 or so volunteers could be established. It could be possible to assemble the team through more than one business. Ideally the project will be completed in Spring. Centrepoint runs a drop-in centre which receives more than 1,000 visits per month where visitors are given access to a warm, safe and friendly environment for a free drink and snack. Visitors are signposted to other agencies for help with things such as housing and financial issues and substance misuse. Rough sleepers are given food, a sleeping bag and access to a shower and clothes laundering facilities. Centrepoint also takes donations of furniture which it distributes to people on low incomes or in emergency need, such as victims of domestic abuse who have had to leave their homes. It also provides food parcels. Anyone who can assist with this project either with plastering, supplying a group of volunteers for painting, supply of materials or individuals that would like to help should contact LCVS on 01205 365588 or email: joanne.h@ lincolnshirecvs.org.uk

helping spark memories leading to conversation. Boston’s emergency planning officer Ronnie Myers is appealing for your old coins for his wife Lynne to use as part of her work as activities coordinator at a residential care home. The activity is extremely popular and involves giving residents a small bag of pre-decimal coins in various denominations including penny, ha’penny, thre’penny bit, tanner, shilling, two bob, half a crown to the value of approximately between ten shillings and a guinea. They are then encouraged to

answer a series of questions designed to get them involved in conversation, to reminisce and talk about what they used to spend and how much various items cost “in their day”. Ronnie said: “The problem she has though is a shortage of the predecimal coins. If anyone would like to dig any out from their cupboard drawers they will be gratefully accepted and you can be assured they will be put to a very good use.” There is a collection box in reception at Boston Borough Council’s Municipal Buildings in West Street for the coins. Lottery grant could lead to £1 million heritage boost for Boston Boston’s history and architecture has won it two Heritage Lottery Fund grants - one of which could pave the way to future funding of more than £1 million. Boston Borough Council, working in partnership with Heritage Lincolnshire, has received initial support for a Townscape Heritage bid from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for Boston’s town centre, it was announced today. Development funding of £73,000 has also been awarded to help Boston Borough Council and Heritage Lincolnshire progress their plans to apply for a full grant at a later date totalling £1,069,000. The project aims to make a further investment to the eastern side of the Market Place in Boston, continuing the regeneration of the area through the conservation and enhancement of its historic architecture and street layout. It will enable essential repairs to historic buildings in parts of Market Place, Dolphin Lane and Pump Square including work that enhances those properties, such as the reinstatement of traditional shop fronts. Alongside the capital works, a programme to involve local people in learning about and celebrating the rich history of the town will also be delivered. There will be free training and workshops, giving people the opportunity to learn new skills in traditional building construction and archaeological building recording and research. Events and activities for families such as medieval fetes and markets will also be able to be delivered. There will be free training and workshops, giving people the opportunity to learn new skills in traditional building construction and archaeological building recording and research. Events and activities for families such as medieval fetes and markets will also be able to be delivered. Boston’s Market Place is medieval in origin, and the eastern boundary and historic lanes were laid out by the 12th century. At this time Boston was a major centre of trade and commerce. Following the drainage of The Fens in the 18th century, the town again enjoyed a prosperous period of growth, and the buildings we see today are important examples of the architecture of the 18th and 19th centuries. Cllr Peter Bedford, Leader of Boston Borough Council, said: “It is encouraging to hear that what Boston has to offer is considered good enough by the Heritage Lottery Fund to attract funding. This has the potential to be a very exciting project helping maintain and restore the most attractive aspects of some of our most historic town centre properties.” Cllr Derek Richmond, the council’s town centre portfolio holder said: “I was part of the small team to show the HLF officers around the town centre and I know they were certainly impressed by the quality of what we have here and absolutely saw the further potential. This can only be good in further enhancing the vitality and viability of Boston” Ben Greener, HLF’s Regeneration Advisor, said: “Regeneration involves transforming places. Heritage is often central to this process, whether in the form of restoring a much-loved landmark or refurbishing boarded-up buildings. “We believe that historic townscapes such as Boston’s are the beating heart of local places. Past Heritage Lottery Fund research shows that even small changes, such as improving shop fronts or restoring a building’s historic features, can make a real difference.”

Magna Carta may be 800 years old, but even King John would have been surprised to learn that some of its clauses are still relevant today. Among other clauses (63 in total), it meant that the King could no longer impose taxes on his people without the consent of the Barons (which evolved into today’s House of Lords) and later through a Parliament which became the House of Commons. Hence today we get the Queen’s Speech which sets out her government’s programme, including taxes. The Great Charter, as it was known, aimed to limit the power of the monarchy, leading to the democratic society we live in today. Magna Carta was created as a solution to the political issues of the time. Now it is of particular relevance yet again with The General and Local Elections on May 7th. Magna Carta has been proclaimed the greatest constitutional document of all time, placing England’s sovereigns under the rule of law for the first time and is now widely regarded as the foundation of democracy. It was first issued in 1215, then reissued in 1216, 1217(Charter of the Forest, protecting the rights of the common man) and finally in 1225. Lincoln Castle has both the 1215 original and the Charter of the Forest in its new Magna Carta Vault

which will open to the public on April 1st. Magna Carta is about freedom and liberty and has been cited around the world in constitutional charters from America and India to New Zealand and South Africa. Phrases first drafted from the charter of 1215 heavily influenced the 1628 Petition of Right, the 1789 Declaration of the Rights of Man and most recently the 1948 United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The main clauses relevant to today are parts of clause 1 (freedom for the church) and clauses 39 and 40, which state, “ No free man will be taken or imprisoned or outlawed or exiled or in any way ruined, nor shall we go or send against him, save by the lawful judgement of his peers and / or by the law of the land. To no one shall we deny or delay right or justice.” We only have to look at the world news on a daily basis to see the dire and deeply shocking consequences when freedom and democracy fails. When we near an election, as we are now, debates get heated, passions rise and things said that are often regretted later, political parties have very differing views, but it is you, the electorate that have the final say. That is what democracy is about – long live Magna Carta!

Advice

Neighbourly Advice ❱ BY STUART HELLON

Neighbours Neighbour disputes are far more common than you might think. What may seem like a neighbourly tiff can soon escalate into something more serious. So what should you do if you find yourself in a dispute with a neighbour? It’s spring so we all want to get outside in the open. It’s a time when you and your neighbour may need access, for example, for property repairs, hedging and trees. Children start to play outside and you may need to look at some renovation. What could go wrong?

Common neighbour disputes - Access to a neighbour’s land for repairs, shared amenities and repairs - Boundaries, fences, walls and part walls - Duty to erect a barrier and planning restrictions on barriers - CCTV - Children (noisy children, damage done by children) - Balls and ball games - Noise and noise in the neighbourhood - Burglar alarms - Parking spaces - Trees, roots, overhanging branches, preservation orders and hedges

Most of us will have had some experience with at least one of these disputes and managed to resolve matters on our own. However not everyone is able to resolve such disputes amicably without help and guidance from an external source. If you need a little guidance the Citizens Advice Bureau is here to help. There is plenty of information on our online self-help guide www.adviceguide.org.uk (search “neighbour disputes”) which provides more detail on all of the areas listed above and information on specific organisations that can help you further.

How to deal with a neighbour dispute Keep calm! We’d all like to think that we could solve neighbour disputes ourselves but this isn’t always possible. Approaching the neighbour should be your first port of call to see if you can reach some sort of amicable agreement. If this doesn’t resolve matters you may wish to try mediation or contact your landlord as a point of authority. If things should escalate or your neighbour becomes aggressive or abusive you may wish to consider further action. However it is important to note that such measures should only be adopted in serious

“If you need a little guidance the Citizens Advice Bureau is here to help.” circumstances when all other methods have been exhausted. More information on when you may take matters further can be found on www.adviceguide.org.uk

Need some extra reassurance? Here at the Citizens Advice Bureau we appreciate that not everyone is able to get the answers they need themselves. Therefore if you would like to speak to someone about your dispute you can pop into our office and make a face-to-face appointment with one of our friendly advisers.

Boston Library March 2015 The Sunne in Splendour by Sharon Penman I’ve recently started rereading this book that I first read for the first time 26 years ago. All of the media interest in the discovery and Adult choice reinternment* of Richard III brought it to mind. I was a little worried that it may not have stood the test of time, but it’s every bit as good as I remember. Sharon Penman spent many years meticulously researching this, her first book, and it shows. Her writing is some of the best historical fiction around. Her achievement with

Junior choice

The Sunne in Splendour has been to strip away the all-pervasive, villainous image of Richard and re-cast him as loving husband, loyal brother, capable soldier and well-beloved king. The 926-page book brings to life The Wars of the Roses through vivid and realistic characterisation. You can’t help but be swept along by the twists and turns and reversals of fortune. And, you’ll probably emerge at the other end having learnt a lot about this pivotal time in England’s history, without even realising you were doing it. *On 26th March, King Richard III is to be reinterred in Leicester Cathedral.

School news

Calling teachers, PTA members, pupils… Do you have exciting news at your school? If you would like to share your school news please send details to editor@simplyboston.co.uk

Bicker Preparatory School Chris Evans from the Boston Foodbank came in to talk to our KS2 pupils about his work at Boston Foodbank. The children were able to see some of the foodbags given to people in Boston who have fallen on hard times. They learnt how everyone is treated with respect and there are opportunities for people to talk to a volunteer, to have a cup of tea, or a meal and feel supported at a difficult time in their lives. Children learnt how supportive various supermarkets and businesses are in the town. Mr Evans talked about how the Foodbank leapt in to action when the floods hit Boston. Class teacher, Mrs Wendy Bell, said “The children were really interested and had many questions to ask. Mr Evans helped the children to see how simple actions make a difference to the lives of others”.

Boston St Nicholas Primary School Here at St Nicholas school we have had a new back gate, entrance and path made to the rear of the school which makes us far more accessible to the local residents. This new path is greatly used by our pupils and their parents. The school has also established a Sensory Garden for the children. The Sensory Garden has been a huge asset to the school and the children have benefitted immensely. As a school we take part in many fundraising activities both raising money for school and other organisations. Last year the staff and children raised money for Children In Need day and we will be taking part in Comic Relief. The school is also investing in a Multiuse games area which will be built in the next few months and will benefit both the children and the local community. Watch this space!

Boston College

National Careers Week 2015 ran from Monday March 2 – Friday March 6, and was a celebration of careers education, information, advice and guidance. In support and celebration of this week, Boston College held a number of events for students to participate in, in order to inform and inspire them. Careers Week encourages organisations to bring together students, local employers and advisers through careers events and activities. In line with this, Boston College’s Careers department organised a variety of different activities for students to attend. DeMontfort University were invited to the college to present to students on the theme of ‘Why HE?’. This event proved extremely valuable for all in attendance as it clarified various queries surrounding Higher Education. The presentation included issues such as: how to choose a course and university that is right for you, preparing for competitive courses, university experience days, student finance and student life. Following this, students had the opportunity to attend fascinating speeches on the Aerospace Industry by Marshall Aerospace and Defence Group. This attracted a lot of attention from students across the college as presentations were given on a variety of different jobs

within the industry and the alternative ways of entering it. Activities were also held internally by the Careers team at the college. They held drop in sessions for both college students and members of the public, where advice and support was on hand for CV writing, interview techniques, and the UCAS process. Rehoming an animal

Adopting a pet If you are considering becoming a pet owner then you might like to look at rehoming an animal. The process isn’t as difficult as it might seem and you can make a huge difference to an animal’s life

H

aving a pet at home can bring about any number of benefits. From company to stress relief, from helping you to get regular exercise to teaching children how to look after animals, your decision to have a pet can be a very personal one. The type of pets people now own are also expanding – gone are the days of having to decide between a cat and a dog, now people are owning goats and chickens as well as the traditional rabbits and guinea pigs. If now is the right time for you to get a pet then think about adopting, many local centres have a variety of pets waiting to be rehomed, often through no fault of their own. Before you plan a visit, however, there are a few things you will need to consider. The biggest commitment you will need to give to a pet is your time. If you would like a dog but the house is empty all day is this the right decision? How much time will you have each day to care for your pet? Do you have the right space, both indoors and outdoors? The larger and more energetic the animal the more space they will need. Do you have children and if so how do they feel about having a pet? Also, if you are buying a pet for your child consider the pet’s lifespan – if it is a long one then you will potentially become the primary carer for the pet when your children leave home! What provisions will you make for your pet when you go away on holiday or if you have long periods away from home? Make sure you are prepared financially. As well as the cost to buy a pet there are ongoing costs such as food, bedding, toys, vets bills and insurance. There are many rehoming centres in the area

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

"The biggest commitment you will need to give to a pet is your time."

ranging from specific types of animal such as dogs or cats to a wide variety of animals including chickens, goats and ponies! Many of these centres have websites so before your first visit it may be a good idea to take a look, familiarise yourself with their rehoming policies to make sure you meet any criteria and, of course, look at the animals hoping to be rehomed. On your visit you will be able to see the animals as well as learn more about them. Make sure you take your time with this part of the process, if you don’t see anything that is quite right then don’t compromise – it makes more sense to revisit another time, it’s a big decision so needs to be right! Once you have decided on the pet you want there will be forms to fill in which will include contact details as well as a little information about your circumstances. As much as the rehoming centres want to rehome their animals they need to be sure that the animal will be safe, well cared for and happy. But as you will want this too, the form filling should not be too much of an inconvenience!! The rehoming centre may wish to come and visit your home just to double check its suitability. This will be done at a time to suit you. Once all the forms have been filled in and the home checks have been carried out all you will need is one more appointment to go and pick up your new pet. And when you have your new pet don’t be afraid to keep in touch with the rehoming centre as they are more than happy to be on hand with any help you may need.

At the Geoff Moulder Leisure Complex we have various activities specifically aimed at those who are a little older.

Supporting Sutterton and Surrounding Area

It is recommended that we all take regular exercise to keep fit and healthy. This doesn’t mean sweating it out in a gym for hours on end. Simply becoming more active on a regular basis helps to keep muscles and joints supple and your body in good working order and helps to keep the mind active too. We have several group fitness classes a week which are instructor led to ensure exercise movements are correct and safe. The classes are also light-hearted, motivational and fun. Before and after the class, participants can sit and have a complimentary drink and a chat in our gym reception area.

Pet Holidays

Holidays for your Dog It’s the time of year when we are all planning our holidays, but what about our furry friends?

"If you are thinking of travelling to France or Spain then Brittany Ferries have a PETS Travel Scheme..."

S

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN mall animals and goldfish aren’t too difficult to cater for as friends and family can look after them but what if you have a dog? Well there are several options to ensure that you both have a good week

away. The most popular option is a boarding kennel. There are many high quality boarding kennels in the area which are dedicated to providing your dog with a stress-free week away from home. If you have never used one then arrange to visit to make sure you are happy with the facilities. When you go, make sure they are fully insured as well as having any extras which are important to you such as heating. Also ask about the opportunities for your dog to go for walks and exercise to make sure they will not be inside all day. Make sure you have your dog’s vaccination certificates to hand as a boarding kennel will need to see this before they can accept your dog. If you are not keen on boarding kennels you have the option of Home Boarding. This is where your dog goes to stay with another family. The benefit here is that your dog can feel comfortable in a home environment, especially if they don’t get along too well with other dogs. As with boarding kennels make sure you visit beforehand and take your dog so they can become familiar

with their holiday destination. If you’re not keen on that either you can take advantage of Dog Sitting, where someone stays at your home and takes care of your dog. Make sure you do your homework on this one as some dog sitters will not be there during the day whereas others will so make sure what is included in their fee. Dog sitting will mean your dog won’t need a change of scenery for your dog and they can keep all of their creature comforts to hand. If your dog is used to the finer things in life then you could try Doggy hotels or doggy spas. These luxury venues keep your pooches pampered and preened in relaxing surroundings. Be prepared to pay well for it though and be ready to come home to a dog who is more refreshed than you! If you really don’t like the thought of leaving your dog then why not take your dog with you? There are many holiday lets in the UK which are pet friendly. Or you could even look beyond the UK. If you are thinking of travelling to France or Spain then Brittany Ferries have a PETS Travel Scheme which allows you to take your dog with you. You will need a DEFRA approved passport (showing that your dog has been microchipped and has been vaccinated against rabies). SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk |

Focus on Skegness

Days Out in Skegness With the weather beginning to improve, where can you go in and around Skegness for a good day out? ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

Natureland Seal Sanctuary Natureland is well known for rescuing and rehabilitating orphaned and injured seal pups that become stranded on Lincolnshire beaches. Visitors can see the seals at various stages of their rehabilitation and hear about the rescue work at feeding times. But Natureland isn’t just about the seals! There are lots more beautiful and amazing animals. Watch the amusing antics of the penguins, be amazed by the tropical butterflies, squirm at the reptiles and creepy crawlies, feed the goats in the Pets Corner and marvel at the beautiful tropical fish in the Aquarium. Open from 10am daily. Feed the seals, penguins and baby seals at 11:30am and 3pm.

Lincolnshire countryside yet just 10 minutes’ walk from the beach, with loads of things to do and animals for you to meet feed and make friends with. It’s a great day out, whatever the weather! You can see pigs being born in our specially glazed breeding unit, feed the goats, cattle and many other animals allowing the children to learn about modern farming and interact with animals in a safe and fun environment. We also have baby Lambs, Goats, Cows and Chicks being born throughout the year. There is plenty of space for the kids to run off energy in adventure playgrounds, while you can relax in award winning tearooms with a hot drink or a bite to eat. Then if the weather is good, you can all go on a relaxing Cart Ride around the Farm with either Gemma our Shire Horse or Fergie the Tractor. With a giant outdoor play fort, and the new Haystacks Indoor Playbarn, there is plenty to do come rain or shine.

Dobsons Windmill & Heritage Centre (Burgh le Marsh) Gibraltar Point Gibraltar Point is a dynamic stretch of unspoilt coastline running southwards from the edge of Skegness to the mouth of the Wash. Gibraltar Point impresses by its sheer scale and diversity of wildlife but to appreciate it fully you need to see it in different seasons. In spring, when the first of the migrants stop off to refuel or establish territories. In summer, little terns may be seen fishing in the shallows and skylarks are in full song above the purple haze of the saltmarshes. In autumn, huge whirling flocks of waders can be seen on the high tides. And in winter, brent geese, shorelark and snow bunting can be seen as well as flocks of redwing and fieldfare.

On Your Marques ‘On Your Marques’ is a fascinating collection of model vehicles and motor racing memorabilia covering the many aspects of motoring history from the world of Formula 1, GT Racing, Rallying, Indycar and Supercars! The collection is housed in a barn that was converted for the sole purpose of displaying it to the public. Inside the displays are bright and colourful. Around 4500 models are presented each season with some new displays and guest collections constructed over the winter.

Hardy’s Animal Farm (Ingoldmells) Hardys Animal Farm is a great day out in over 7 acres of 22 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON

Enjoy a visit and take a step back in time at Burgh le Marsh Heritage Centre and Dobsons’ Mill, giving you the rare opportunity to tour a working windmill. The windmill, a Grade 1 listed building is unique in the fact that it is one of the few remaining examples of a left handed mill and still contains much of its original equipment. Free guided tours are given by knowledgeable and friendly volunteers of the Burgh le Marsh Windmill Heritage Group and vary in length with a maximum of up to 2 hours. Children especially find the windmill fascinating, for the disabled visitor and those who find stairs a problem there is a visual guided tour available to view in the Granary visitor centre. There is ample free car parking shared with the Windmill Restaurant.

Willow Farm Holidays Willow Farm are passionate about ponies. They welcome children on Riding Holidays to look after, ride, care for and compete a pony as their own for a week. They can also help with other animals, watch chicks hatch and even learn to milk a goat if they wish. They also run Riding Lessons on evenings and weekends for adults and children wanting to have a go or improve their horse riding skills.

Fantasy Island Just open again after the winter break, Fantasy Island brings you loads of rides and attractions for all ages as well as Europe’s largest seven day market selling fashion, gifts and toys, home and garden items and electricals. There are also two themed bars and regular shows by resident entertainers and special guest artists.

Skegness Stadium

The stadium has events all year round – check their website for dates and details (www. skegness-stadium. info). Over Easter you can see motorbike stunt teams, stock car and banger racing and monster truck car crushing.

February 2014. Miss Nina and all her little stars celebrated by throwing a magical party at one of her class venues, The Ridlington Centre in Boston on Sunday 22nd February 2015. Miss Nina says ‘it was a huge success and I felt very proud to see how far the business has come in just one year.’ I cannot believe a year ago I was setting up ready to teach the first babyballet Boston class, excited and apprehensive wondering if anyone would turn up or if I would be dancing on my own! However I didn’t need to worry as I couldn’t have wished for a more amazing first year. What a journey Twinkle and I have been on since then. The job satisfaction is like no other, it is an amazing feeling when I see one of my little stars achieve something new e.g a first jump or hop, or the first time they come out in the front of the class, and even the first time an 18month old To celebrate turning 1 shows me a beautiful curtsey or bow, babyballet boston held Fantastic classes!! Would makes me feel very proud as a teacher. highly recommend to everya tea and tutu party I also love to see the friendships that one with a little girl or boy!! with special guests – MIKEY EMERY twinkle and teddy the have developed amongst children babyballet bears. (and the parents) who attend class. Dance is a fantastic education, is great for keeping The early years between a child and parent are so very children’s bodies and mind’s active and makes you feel precious, I feel very lucky to be able to offer something happy, and a babyballet class certainly does all those very special to do with their children once a week. things. babyballet is great for children on all levels, such as children who are very shy and timid to children who have immense energy to burn. The babyballet syllabus is designed to teach children the basics of ballet without them realising they are learning so many more skills at the same time. Children attending classes get so much more out of the class than I could ever imagine. babyballet won The Loved By Parents award for the ‘best baby/toddler class’ in 2014!

Easter

Easter Recipes Spring is such a wonderful time with new life all around us and Easter usually means a family get together – why not try these traditional recipes?

Leg of Lamb Preheat your oven to 190°c. Rub the leg of lamb with salt and pepper. Transfer to a roasting tin and add rosemary, either on the stalk or taken off. Cook for 45 minutes and then lower the oven temperature to 160°c and continue to roast until the juices run clear. Once cooked remove from the oven and leave to stand. Carve and serve with seasonal vegetables.

Simnel Cake Preparation method Preheat the oven to 150°c. Line a 20cm deep round tin with silicone paper. Mix the ingredients together and put half the mixture in the bottom of the cake tin. Divide the marzipan into 3 equal parts and roll out one piece into a 20cm circle. Put it on top of the cake mixture. Spoon the rest of the mixture on the top. Bake for 2 and a half hours until brown, well risen and firm to the touch. Allow to cool. When the cake is cool warm up the apricot jam and brush the top of the cake with it. Roll out half of the remaining marzipan to the size of the top of the cake and press down on the top of the cake. Roll the rest of the marzipan into 11 balls and place around the edge of the cake. Brush the whole of the top with egg and grill until the marzipan turns a light golden colour.

Easter Biscuits Preparation method Preheat the oven to 180°c and line 2 baking sheets with grease proof paper. Combine the butter and sugar. Add the egg and the flour and mix until you have a firm dough. Wrap the dough in cling film and put into the fridge for at least half an hour. When the dough is chilled roll it out to a thickness of roughly quarter of an inch. Cut out shapes using an Easter theme such as eggs, chicks and bunnies. Put the biscuits onto the baking tray and bake for 8-10 minutes until golden. When cooked remove from the oven and leave to cool. Once cool decorate the biscuits.

Gardening

Making your own compost Spring in the garden is an exciting time when all of your planting can get underway - we take a look at the humble compost heap and the benefits it can have for your garden

L

et’s be honest, sitting in your bright and beautiful garden in summer admiring the results of all of your hard work you put in during Spring, feels great. A large part of your preparations once the weather starts warming up is to encourage everything to grow and compost can be especially handy. Rather than buying compost how about making your own? You could even go one step further and build your own compost bin. The beauty of your own compost is that it is easy to make, free to make and will benefit your garden. As well as using mowings from the lawn, other garden waste such as annual weeds, dead leaves and old bedding plants can be used to bulk up the heap. Uncooked vegetable peelings and teabags from the kitchen can also be thrown on. If you are going to put kitchen waste on the heap make sure there are no food scraps in there and if you are throwing old plants on make sure there are no perennial roots or weeds with seed heads. Many garden centres sell compost bins both wooden and plastic and are easy to transport home. If you fancy having a go at building one yourself make sure it is big enough so that heat can build up, allowing the compost to work well. If you allow

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN about a cubic metre this will allow you to layer properly and heat will be able to build up. If you are building a bin from scratch remember that you will need easy access to the compost when it is time to put it on the garden so make sure you build your bin in such a way that the compost will be easily accessible. Once you have your bin ready and in place then you can start to fill it. There should be plenty of drainage in the bottom followed by your first layer of garden waste. If possible try to vary your layers – perhaps use your kitchen waste in between grass cuttings. When you have put your waste onto the heap then cover it – this can be anything from polythene to a piece of carpet to even building a lid onto your bin. Then all you have to do is wait! A few months is generally a good amount of time to wait which is why starting now will pay huge dividends in Summer! From time to time take off your cover and aerate the compost (putting in your garden fork should do the trick). This adds air which helps everything to rot. Once ready you can use your compost as mulch around your plants or in your vegetable patch. You can even use it for potting plants. So with a little work in Spring your garden will thank you in Summer!

Citroën C4 Cactus

he Citroën C4 Cactus isn’t the prettiest car on the block – but it does have appeal. Indeed, the bold and distinctive Cactus won over the judges in the highly-prized small hatchback category at the UK Car of the Year Awards 2015. It’s been described as “the quirkiest car of the year”, with “refreshing looks” and “a sense of fun”. I’d agree with two out of those three points – but the ‘refreshing looks’ statement is stretching the truth a bit. The high-set LED running lights are the best features of the car, with slightly out of sorts headlights positioned lower down. But the most bizarre and unsightly elements of the Citroën are the ‘Airbump’ protection panels on the side doors. They’re designed to stop parking knocks – and are replaceable. I’d rather get a ding and have it knocked out than have these grotesque slabs of plastic

28 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON

❱ BY TIM BARNES-CLAY glued to my motor. Aesthetics aside, crossover vehicles, such as the C4 Cactus, sell like hot cakes and any car manufacturer worth its salt seems to have one in its line-up. Citroën is obviously going head to head with the Nissan Juke and Renault Captur - but, there’s a major difference: the French firm has gone its own way, stripping the car to its bones to lower cost and weight, and boost efficiency. Inside the cabin, some of the plastics are cheap to the touch, and the car’s flat surfaces are interrupted by a bare minimum of switchgear. Most of the Cactus’s functions are operated via a touch screen that rests on top of the centre console, and an instrument display screen sits to the front of the steering wheel. The front seats are wide but lack support; there’s no obvious lumbar adjustment and I found it fiddly, even with the adjustable steering column, to achieve a comfortable driving position. Even worse, the five-speed

manual box’s action is like limp lettuce. The C4 Cactus has a wide range of engines, but it’s the 1.6 diesel 100bhp BlueHDi I drove that’s destined to be the most popular; it offers a respectable blend of power and economy. The car’s punchy enough, though the long gearing forfeits agility for efficiency. Zero to 62mph in 10.7 seconds is par for the course for the class, but this is a vehicle built for getting you from A to B in relative calm rather than pure pace. Top end is 114mph and you can expect up to 80mpg on an average run. The mpg figure will be this car’s real selling point. On the practical side of things, a 358 litre boot is excellent for the class and the deep, wide shape is valuable. Back seat passengers have oodles of headroom, though leg room isn’t all that remarkable. Based on an extended version of the same chassis as the popular, youth oriented DS3, the Cactus is okay, but Citroën has tried too hard to make it look different. The result is a pretty ugly car which I don’t think will age particularly well. On the other hand, if you’re looking for a motor that genuinely stands out from the crowd, and doesn’t drink much fuel, the C4 Cactus 1.6 diesel 100hp BlueHDi makes a compelling case for itself.

Putting local people first

The old Westminster Parties have taken Boston and Skegness for granted. As a local Councillor in Skegness I have helped many local residents and aspire to do much more as your MP.

2

VOTE LOCAL MAN ROBIN HUNTERCLARKE AS YOUR NEXT MP FOR BOSTON AND SKEGNESS

Your candidate Boston & Skegness born and bred

Robin is the only candidate born and raised in Boston and Skegness. Ask the Conservative candidate where will he go should he lose the election? Robin is one of us win, lose or draw.

3

Meet your local MP Candidate at the UKIP Shop in Boston Town Centre

Curbing immigration

Boston and Skegness has seen a huge influx in European migration over recent years. This has put a strain on our health system, schools and jobs. Only UKIP believe in a fair immigration system that will be based on an “Australian points based system
