Without the loyalty of our advertisers we would not be able to deliver such a great magazine to you every month. Like us at Simply Boston
Welcome
to the April issue Hello! It’s great to be back at the helm after 10 months away, Vicky has done a fantastic job of keeping you all updated with the local news and information whilst I have been away having my baby. Little Stanley is now 10 months old and crawling, so I’ve had to develop eyes in the back of my head. Life as a working mum certainly presents some challenges at times whether that’s an unwanted 3am wakeup call with a deadline the next day or missing out on an activity you both enjoy but I wouldn’t change it for the world. I will keep you all updated on his progress over the coming months – for now here’s us on a cold March day at Pigeon’s Farm! Back to the job in hand and the April issue – this edition is full of Spring. We guide you through setting up your own vegetable patch at home, talk to The Caravan and Camping Club about towing, a must read if you’re thinking of buying a caravan this year and we also met with Velo One Cycling Team to find out about the club. Without giving too much away – keep an eye out for the next issue as we are making some changes to the magazine. We have conducted research with you, our readers and listened to what you would like to see in Simply Boston and you will hopefully be pleased with our new look and content. For now though, enjoy the issue.

Big Boston Clean-up 2016 Lincolnshire primary schools challenged with sporting event Primary schools across Lincolnshire are invited to take part in a one-day School Sport Challenge this summer. The event, which caters for up to 200 pupils per day, is coordinated by Lincolnshire Sport to encourage more young people to try new sports and activities. Primary schools can choose from three sporting packages; athletics, ball sports and striking – with up to seven activities per package. Lucy Blakey, Children and Young People Officer at Lincolnshire Sport, said: “Our School Sport Challenge events incorporate a variety of inclusive activities and sports which are suitable for every pupil as an intra-school sport challenge. It’s a great way for primary schools to utilise some of their Primary School Sports Premium funding by encouraging the whole school to try new sports or activities in a fun and relaxed environment, whilst also learning about the School Games competition.” Sessions are delivered by fully trained Young Leaders from Lincoln College, and pupils will all receive a Bronze, Silver or Gold certificate at the end of the day. Schools also have the option to raise funds for the school during the challenge. For more information, contact Lucy Blakey on 01522 730 325 or lucy.blakey@ lincolnshiresport.com.
The Big Boston Clean-up this spring will be by royal appointment. The Right Royal Big Boston Clean-up 2016 will support a national tidy campaign, Clean For The Queen. And you can nominate local right royal eyesores that you’d like to see cleaned up. Boston’s clean-up will take place over four days, from Monday, April 4, to Thursday, April 7, and will incorporate the nationwide campaign to clear up Britain in time for Her Majesty’s 90th birthday, which will be officially celebrated in June. The campaign calls on individuals, volunteer groups, local councils, businesses and schools to do their bit. Volunteers are now being recruited for the ninth annual Big Boston Clean-up to do the right thing for Boston, Queen and country. There will be opportunities for teams of neighbours, friends and relatives to work together, helping clean up their own areas. You can sign up now using the online pledge form http://forms.boston.gov.uk/survey/ cleanup/pledge.asp, by contacting Jen Moore at
Boston Borough Council on 01205 314583 or by emailing Jen at jenny.moore@boston.gov.uk “We start at 9am and finish at 3pm each day, but volunteers can do as little or as much as they want to. There’s a coffee break and a free lunch provided each day. ” She said volunteers needed to wear clothing appropriate to anticipated weather conditions and stout footwear. Everything else – highvisibility vests, litter pickers, sacks and gloves are provided. The clean-up starts each day at 9am at Municipal Buildings. A separate Big Schools Clean-up is also organised before the Easter break. For the past four years 1,598 primary school children have taken part, clearing litter from in and around their school grounds. If your school has not so far signed up and wants to be involved, contact Jen. Boston Borough Council will register the town effort with the Clean For The Queen national campaign – see more at www. cleanforthequeen.co.uk

Health trainer service restructuring under way A restructuring effort has begun to try to retain a Lincolnshire-based health service which has suffered a funding blow. Lincolnshire County Council Public Health has given three months notice that it is to cease funding the Lincolnshire health trainer service. Lincolnshire Community and Voluntary Service (LCVS) delivers the service in Boston, South Holland and South Kesteven. David Fannin, Lincolnshire Community and Voluntary Service (LCVS) chief executive, said: “Of course we are disappointed. The risk of developing diseases that are affected by lifestyle, and the benefits of 4 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON
healthy eating and exercise for people vulnerable to diabetes and dementia, are widely recognised. We have a core group of qualified health trainers who have made a big difference to a lot of people’s lives over the years. We are working on a new business model and are determined to make sure the knowledge, skills and experience of the health trainers is not lost in Lincolnshire.” Health trainers help their clients to assess their lifestyles and wellbeing, set goals for improving their health, agree actionplans, and provide practical support and information that will help people to change their behaviour.
Last year, Lincolnshire County Council funded the LCVS health trainer service with £240,000 from the public health budget. LCVS employs ten people in health trainer roles, including one senior officer who works across all three districts and, in a mixture of full and part time roles – three in South Holland; four in Boston and two in South Kesteven. All those staff have been told they are now at risk of redundancy. It is hoped alternative funding will be found to retain at least some of the positions. No new clients are currently being taken on, but LCVS is maintaining a list of those who wish to access the service.

After the flood When a crisis comes calling it’s bad enough for businesses coping with the immediate physical effects of flood, fire and general mayhem and destruction. In the understandable panic of an emergency situation there may be a moment’s memory blindness – where are the main switches for gas and electricity and the stop cock for the water? Then there’s who to call and what to tell them – electricity, gas and water supply, insurance contacts and details and other essential information. Wormgate hair and beauty salon owner Aston Robinson has been through that nightmare scenario. His was among the many businesses, along with the hundreds of residential properties, flooded in December, 2013, when the water spilled over the tidal Haven’s defences. God forbid that should ever happen again, or any other similar disaster with enough impact to knock a business off its feet. But if it does, Aston is now better prepared. He has completed his Business Continuity Plan – an essential document containing all the information he requires for his business in one handy folder; from the concealed location of his premise’s stop cock to his insurance policy number. It includes a tick box guide of actions to take to deal with the immediate emergency and then to make a quick recovery and get back to business. Any business can have help from Boston Borough Council to put together their own Business Continuity Plan, tailored specifically for their business, and it’s free.
Aston Robinson, centre, with his Business Continuity Plan, outside his business premises which were badly flooded in 2013. Also pictured, left Cllr Stephen Woodliffe and right, Ronnie Myers.
Aston said he is confident that his new plan will help in any future crisis. “I wish I had one of these plans when I was flooded in 2013, I would have got my business back up fully trading again much quicker than I did.” He thanked Boston Borough Council for help in the production of the plan and recommended other business owners make contact with Ronnie Myers, Emergency Planning and Business Continuity Officer, to complete one for themselves. Ronnie said: “The plans are individual and specifically designed to help businesses recover from any emergencies they may face in the future such as flooding, a fire, loss of power, computer systems failure and more.” Cllr Stephen Woodliffe, Boston Borough Council’s emergency planning portfolio holder, said: “With the best will in the world we can all find ourselves at a loss in an emergency, scrabbling round for vital information that we need to access quickly. This document takes the hassle and the panic out of that, can saves heaps of time and reduce stress levels. It makes sense for all businesses to have a document such as this, and the council will help provide it for free. All businesses have to do is devote a little time to it.” Business owners interested in having a plan for their business should contact Ronnie on 01205 314 444 or email to ronnie.myers@ boston.gov.uk
Skegness attraction bought by major International Leisure Group International events and leisure group, Mellors Group, brings stability to Fantasy Island Management at Skegness tourist attraction, Fantasy Island, have confirmed that the resort has been bought by major international leisure group, Mellors Group. The news signals positive change for the attraction, which was placed into administration on 4 August 2014. Mellors Group, who already own a leisure park in Dubai – coincidentally also called Fantasy Island –are responsible for popular events including London’s Hyde Park Winter Wonderland, Nottingham Winter Wonderland, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park Beach, The Nottingham Beach and the siting of giant Observation wheels around the UK. They now intend to bring

a lot of their family’s showmanship to the East Coast. The Group, who is also familiar with caravan park operations within the UK, brings vast and varied experience to the Skegness resort. James Mellors, Managing Director of the Mellors Group said; “It is a very exciting time for our company as we have seen strong growth in our events business throughout the region and abroad. We pride ourselves on delivering the highest standard of attractions and we have some interesting investment plans and new rides for Fantasy Island in the near future.” The group’s ownership of the 41acre freehold property is expected to transform the current leisure offering, which already delivers record-breaking roller coasters and Europe’s largest sevenday market, as well as 340 static caravan pitches.
Don’t lose your vote in 2016 Letters will soon be dropping through letterboxes across the borough giving details of people who are currently registered to vote at that address. If the information contained in the letter is all correct you do not need to take any further action. However, if people need to be added you can register online at www. gov.uk/register-to-vote or call the Electoral Services Office on 01205 314220 / 314221 to obtain registration forms. If some or all of the people listed no longer live at the address contact the Electoral Services Office on the above numbers to update the information. An election for a Police and Crime Commissioner for Lincolnshire is to be held on Thursday, May 5, and the EU Referendum has been called for Thursday, June 23. To be able to vote your name needs to be on the electoral register and some people may not realise that they have to register every year. Just because you pay council tax does not automatically mean you are registered to vote. The register is also used by credit referencing agencies and if you are not registered you may experience difficulties in obtaining credit, a mortgage or even a mobile phone contract. For more information contact your local Electoral Registration Officer on 01205 314220 / 314221 or e-mail Elreg@boston.gov.uk

Each issue Peter Bedford, leader of Boston Borough Council, discusses the important topics in and around Boston I have great sympathy for young people these days finding a home to call their own. I have a son and a granddaughter, and I understand the worry that securing their own independence and putting a roof over their head brings. Boston Borough Council has been working for years to help enable housing providers to bring a supply of affordable homes to the market, and it is pleasing to see all that hard work beginning to pay off. Since 2012, as part of its housing strategy, the council has worked with housing providers to identify suitable sites and unlock funding to help build affordable homes – to rent and to buy. And to make purchase as painless as possible, there are shared ownership deals on offer. It will give me immense pleasure later this month (March) to cut the ribbon marking the completion of 41 new affordable homes at Blue Street in Boston. Not only has this development provided smart new homes built to the latest standards, but it has brought into good use a previously derelict parcel of land. Waterloo Housing Group has been a great partner to work with after the council “pump primed” this scheme. A further 13 affordable homes have been built at Brothertoft Road by Waterloo, which is to deliver 48 homes at Broadfield Lane, Boston, in 2016/17, followed by 75 more in a second phase in Broadfield Lane in 2017/18. It also has plans for 32 properties in Toot Lane in 2017/18. Other affordable home schemes are being developed in Swineshead, Tytton Lane, Wyberton, and Old Leake. More than 300 new, affordable homes will be delivered through our partnership with Waterloo and a funding mix from the council, Waterloo, the Homes and Communities Agency and the
Greater Lincolnshire Local Economic Partnership Housing Unlocking Fund; that means more than £25 million invested in homes for people in need over five years and that’s no mean feat. The Blue Street scheme is on the former Pilgrim Foods depot. The development cost just over £5 million and received investment support of £157,000 from Boston Borough Council and £1million from the Homes and Communities Agency. Our funding originally came from New Homes Bonus - £872,000 in total made up of £550,000 initially and £322,000 as tranche two. This, and our work with Waterloo Housing Group and with other partners on the GLLEP Housing Unlocking Fund has meant that that we have been able to secure much more investment and deliver many more schemes and affordable homes than originally planned. We are still in the process of Identifying potentially two further schemes for which we have funding. Once you have your new home you need to furnish it, and it’s great news that Bensons For Beds has moved into the former retail unit occupied by Carpet Right, between Pets At Home and Halfords, off Queen Street. I don’t have a problem with shops changing use. It shows a retail market which is active. I do have a problem with empty retail units, so it is good news that this unit is still occupied Any new business coming to town, and a national retailer at that, is certainly good news in my book.
It’s all about the figures It is vital that businesses know how they are performing to enable them to make the right decisions and react quickly to changes in the market place
A
s accountants, the question we are often asked is how to capture this information and report what is happening on a regular basis. The answer is that one system will certainly not suit every business and whatever is decided will need to be tailored to the individual circumstances and needs of the business. The starting point to reporting financial performance is ensuring that information is recorded accurately, consistently and in a timely fashion. There are many packages and tools available to help with this and finding the right one to suit the needs of your business is not always easy. The decision will be influenced by the type of business, the complexity of the transactions, the way you prefer to record items and what reports you will need to be able to run. Speaking to your accountant at an early stage will help you make the right choice. There are now many cloud based accounting systems available that allow users to access their records at any time and from anywhere.
Access can also be granted to different people from different locations to log-in simultaneously, for instance, adding your accountant means that advice can be given in real time using a more
collaborative approach than traditional face to face meetings at irregular intervals. Part of any good reporting system is to set budgets for both the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and financial information so the report produced can compare the actual results to these budgets. Being able to have this information to hand allows the business owner to make informed decisions and take action without delay. Ultimately, the successful growth of a business depends on its ability to remain responsive to the market in which it operates. This means being proactive and using a good cloud accounting solution with the support of an experienced adviser will help to achieve that. Duncan & Toplis has launched a cloud accounting service to simplify the bookkeeping process for owner managed businesses. D&T ONLINE provides support for Xero, QuickBooks Online, KashFlow and Sage One and offers a free consultation and software demonstrations to help clients decide which cloud software is best for their business.

Advice To view the report visit : www.citizensadvice.org.uk/shy-of-retiring/
Shy of retiring? Citizens Advice report addresses under-saving among self-employed people Self-employed people would rather invest cash in a savings account, cash ISA or property than pay into a private pension, reveals new research by Citizens Advice. In their recent report Shy of Retiring, the national charity finds that a lack of trust, understanding and information is holding self-employed people back from saving into a pension. Based on focus groups with self-employed people as well as a survey of 650 people who work for themselves the report identifies three key issues standing in the way of selfemployed people saving into a pension: • Lack of understanding: over two thirds of self-employed people (67 per cent) do not understand the tax breaks offered by cash ISAs and private pensions with a quarter (25 per cent) wrongly thinking that an ISA offers better tax breaks than a pension. • Lack of trust: half of self-employed people (50 per cent) say they do not trust private pensions as a safe place to invest their money. • Lack of information: over a quarter of selfemployed people (27 per cent) say they have never received any information or advice about pensions from anyone. Stuart Hellon CEO, Citizens Advice Mid Lincolnshire said “While many self-employed people are happy in their work, most hadn’t given a great deal of thought to when, if and how they might retire. Many assume they will continue to work (either full, or part-time) long past retirement age. While for some this is due to having a strong sense of ownership of their work, others, less positively, have little provision for retirement and so feel they have no choice but to continue working.” While the number of people in selfemployment has increased in recent years, at the same time the number of self-employed
people saving into a pension has halved. This may be partially explained by the rise in part-time working and the drop in median income, which means that for many selfemployed people, saving may simply be unviable. But this does not tell the whole story; self-employed people tend to start saving into a pension later than their employed counterparts, and only 24% of self-employed people with a household income of £1,000 or more a week are paying into a pension. So why are so few self-employed people contributing to a pension? There is no evidence to support the idea they are relying on cash savings instead - cash savings accounts (including ISAs) are equally popular with self-employed people and employees, and among most age groups, the value of their savings are similar. Pensions are not perceived to offer good value for money. Shy of Retiring reveals widespread misunderstanding of the tax breaks associated with pensions among selfemployed people and employees alike - seven in ten (69%) do not understand the tax breaks provided by a pension. This, coupled with the lack of an employer contribution leaves many feeling that pensions are not a worthwhile investment. This is compounded by both a lack of trust and lack of information. For instance, many are unaware of the flexibility offered by most pension providers - they believe that they would need to continue to pay into their pension, even if their income dropped or if they stopped working. Furthermore, while employees tend to get information about pensions from their employer, self-employed people have to be pro-active and seek this out from other sources. As such, self-employed people can feel isolated in terms of not receiving information and advice about their options, resulting in
bewilderment and inertia. A self-employed person will not make the pro-active decision to contribute unless they both understand and trust pension products: a double barrier. The report argues that to increase trust and understanding of pensions among self-employed people, a concerted effort is needed to help them recognise the pros and cons of this type of saving and Citizens Advice highlights that the Government, pension providers and advice bodies must increase information and advice to selfemployed people about pension options, so they can make informed decisions about how best to save for their retirement. The report also suggests that increasing appetite for pension among self-employed people should also be accompanied by incentives and action to make it easier for self-employed people to set up and save into a pension. “It is really important that self-employed people are offered up front information about how pensions can work for them and paying into a pension needs to be made easier and come with similar incentives for self-employed people as those currently enjoyed by employees.” said Stuart “Citizens Advice recommends the creation of an opt-in pensions system on self-assessment returns, mirroring the autoenrolment option available to employees which has worked well to increase pension take-up. In practice this would allow people who work for themselves to tick a box when doing their tax return which would automatically create a pension account which they can contribute to at a rate that suits them.” In addition the charity also recommends the Government match pension contributions of self-employed people up to a level of 1 per cent of gross income.

Adult choice Man Up DVD My boyfriend rolled his eyes when I brought home a romcom for our evening’s entertainment but a quote on the DVD cover said ‘the best British rom-com in years’. It was a bold claim to make but we found ourselves chuckling at key moments throughout the film, especially as we, like the characters, had met on a blind date. Unlucky-in-love Nancy accidentally meets recently-divorced Jack under the clock at Waterloo station, who believes her to be his blind date. It’s not a Richard Curtis –style rollercoaster of emotion but my boyfriend and I preferred this witty film to the unrealistic schmaltz other rom-coms can offer. New DVD releases are charged at £2 for two nights. Older titles are priced at £1 for one week.

School News
Calling teachers, PTA members, pupils… Do you have exciting news at your school? If you would like to share your school news please send details to editor@simplyboston.co.uk
Wyberton Primary School children join the Big School's Birdwatch The entire school went bird crazy in their annual Big School's Bird count week as part of the RSPB's annual Big Schools' Birdwatch. From the 1st to the 5th of February Wyberton Primary School used birdwatching as a centre piece for their learning across the curriculum from Reception to Year 6! They were practising recognising birds, feeding birds, improving their school grounds to help the birds, painting pictures of birds, analysing data, studying habitats...the list goes on! The school really loves it's outdoor learning - being the first school in Lincolnshire to have a hive of honey bees! The bird count is just one example of the love of the outdoors that the school tries
to embed within its children. Activities go on throughout the year that encourage a connectedness with nature which will hopefully develop children who are responsible custodians of our local area and wider world. The Big Schools' Birdwatch is a simple activity that gets children and their teachers closer to the birds visiting their school grounds. 75,000 children and teachers took part in the wildlife survey last year. By participating in the Big Schools' Birdwatch, children and teachers are also helping to give nature a home at their school. To learn more visit the School's website www.wybertonprimary.org.uk
St George’s Preparatory School, Boston is celebrating second consecutive Ofsted ‘Outstanding’ rating Since September 2015, Ofsted have introduced a new round of inspections which gives schools a half day notice of inspections. Historically, independent and state schools were inspected using different criteria, however since September 2015, all schools are inspected using the same framework and identical judgements. This puts all schools on a ‘level playing field’ so that parents and the general public are able to make a better informed decision regarding schools. Her Majesty’s Inspectors visited the school which formed in 2011 for two and a half days in mid January and conducted a thorough and rigorous examination of teaching, learning, policies and health and safety across the school. Ofsted found, “Pupils receive a well-rounded education and success is measured not only in academic achievement but in social success and success in the arts and sports as well......pupils excel in many areas and are well prepared for life in modern Britain.” The school was judged on the quality of teaching, learning and assessment, outcomes for pupils, personal development, behaviour and 12 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON
welfare, the effectiveness of leadership and management and early years provision. St George’s Preparatory School was judged to be outstanding on every level. Inspectors praised the school for creating a positive environment with well mannered and self disciplined children. Children were recognised not only for their academic endeavours, but also for achieving highly in the sports and arts, with the Forest School curriculum being at the heart of everything the children do and learn. The teaching and learning was found to be of the highest quality with most children achieving standards beyond their chronological age and those with special educational needs making rapid progress due to early identification of their needs and a programme of intervention. During the inspection, inspectors met with pupils, who impressed the visitors with their maturity, knowledge of current affairs, their manners and the ability to articulate with confidence. “Pupils are confident and selfassured learners. From the youngest pupil to the oldest, pupils know that they are valued and known as individuals.”
An 'Ofsted-style' church school inspection has found Boston’s St Nicholas Church of England Primary School to be 'Outstanding' The National Society Statutory Inspection of Anglican and Methodist Schools Report upgraded the Woad Farm Road school from “good” to “outstanding” The school has 239 children with a larger than average proportion from Eastern Europe. Many new arrivals have little or no experience of English when they join the school. Inspector Anne Platt said the distinctiveness and effectiveness of St Nicholas as a Church of England school are outstanding with the vision of the head teacher, effectively supported by staff and governors, embedding strong Christian values which underpin all aspects of school life. Contribution to the Christian ethos are valued and celebrated, there are high expectations, rigorous self-evaluation and a committed community with the school at its core, supporting the spiritual, social, moral and cultural development of all learners, said the inspector. The strong sense of community means that pupils and their families are very well supported and nurtured. Areas to improve included expanding the learners’ understanding of Christianity as a multi-cultural world faith by increasing the range of representatives from different Christian traditions who contribute to collective worship. And increasing the involvement of pupils in the planning and delivery of collective worship in order to increase their sense of ownership, confidence and ability to lead. The inspector said: “St Nicholas is a highly caring, nurturing and welcoming school. Children are proud of their school and talk confidently about why it is special to them. “Parents speak highly of ‘everyone accepting each other regardless of any language differences’, praising the genuine family ethos they find in this school. “Pupils realise how privileged their lifestyle is compared to, ‘people who are homeless through disasters or wars.’ Pupils quickly learn to celebrate and appreciate diversity, both in school and the wider community. As a result they begin to develop their own values that will provide a foundation for their future lives. “The effectiveness of the leadership and management of the school as a church school is outstanding.”

Caravan & Camping
How to tow a caravan Thanks to improvements in modern tow car and caravan technology, towing a caravan is now safer and less stressful than ever before. In this guide, we explain how to ensure a safe and stable car and caravan outfit match, and how to ensure you stay safe on the road ❱ BY ANDREW ROBSON, THE CARAVAN AND CAMPING CLUB How to load a caravan It is important that before taking to the open road, all windows are securely fastened and loose objects safely stowed away, either in storage in your ‘van or in the rear/boot space of your towing vehicle. Ensure heavier items are located low over the caravan axle. Avoid stashing heavy items in overhead lockers or at the very rear of the caravan. It is illegal to travel in your caravan while it is being towed. All passengers must travel in the towing vehicle. The caravan should ride level or slightly ‘nose down’ when loaded for the road and hitched to the tow car. Don’t overload the
gas locker or interior space at the front of the caravan as this can cause excessive ‘noseweight’, or downward force on the car’s tow ball, and lead to an unsafe towing experience. When travelling downhilll, it is important not to accelerate. An increase in speed can amplify lateral movement of the caravan: this is also referred to as ‘snaking’. How to make sure your ‘van is safe on the road Basic checks must be completed before the start of any journey. These include: checking that the towing electrics and breakaway cable between your tow bar and caravan
are correctly connected; that your caravan’s road lights are working correctly; make sure the tyre pressures are correct on both the ‘van and car and that the jockey wheel is safely stowed and secured in place before the start of any journey. It is worth checking all is secure and working correctly at regular intervals during the course of a trip. Keeping other road users happy Do not hold up a long queue of traffic, especially if you are driving a large or slow-moving vehicle. Check your mirrors frequently, and if necessary, pull in where it is safe and let traffic pass. (GOV UK, The Highway Code – Using the road 169).
The Camping and Caravanning Club’s top tips for towing Check your driving licence - if you passed your test before 1 January 1997, you will automatically have a BE category entitlement. This means you can drive car and caravan combinations up to 8250kg. If you passed your test since then, your licence will have categories B and B1, which means the combined maximum weight of the car and caravan, cannot be more than 3500kg. It’s very important to ensure your tow car and caravan are safely matched. Check your car’s kerb weight and its towing limit, and also the maximum weight of the trailer when it’s fully loaded - beginners should tow no more than 85 per cent of the car’s kerb weight to help ensure a safe and stable towing experience on the road. Get a proper number plate made up that matches that of your tow car (i.e., no marker
18 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON
pen on cardboard), and fix it securely to the caravan or trailer. It must be illuminated at night. Fit towing mirrors to your car when towing. The law says that anyone towing a caravan must be able to see 20 metres behind them and four metres either side of the trailer. To meet this requirement, almost all vehicles need additional towing mirrors. But don’t forget to remove them when you’re not towing - it’s illegal to drive with them on if you don’t need them. Load the caravan carefully when preparing for the road: the heaviest items should be placed on the floor, directly over the axle. Also, try to ensure sufficient ‘noseweight’ on the tow ball. Know your speed limits before towing on the open road: they’re often lower when
you’re towing. Don’t exceed 50mph on single carriageways or 60mph on dual carriageways and motorways. Also, you may not tow in the furthest right (or ‘outside’) lane of a three-or-more lane motorway, unless instructed to do so. When you’re towing, you’ll need to give yourself more time and space for manoeuvring. Brake earlier, accelerate more slowly, and be conscious of the extra length, width and height of your outfit. You’ll need to take corners more widely than normal, so the back of the caravan doesn’t clip a kerb or cut a corner. Similarly, be aware of height restrictions and overhanging tree branches. Be aware of side winds from lorries, and crosswinds on the open road in turbulent conditions. Also, ease off the accelerator when descending hills - this will help to cut
down on any lateral swaying movement of the caravan behind the car, known as ‘snaking’. When reversing around a corner, onto a caravan pitch or driveway, first turn the steering wheel in the opposite direction to the way you would turn it if you were driving solo. As you reverse, and the caravan begins to turn, turn the steering wheel back in the other direction so the car follows the caravan onto the pitch or into the driveway. The Camping and Caravanning Club run a number of caravan manoeuvring courses up and down the country, which will take you through all you need to know, from hitching up your caravan and car to safe towing and reversing. For details of our manoeuvring courses please visit: www. campingandcaravanningclub.co.uk

Get Your Dog Microchipped …It’s the Law! The Government is bringing in compulsory microchipping for all dogs from 6 April 2016 to help reunite owners with lost or stolen pets, relieve the burden on animal charities and local authorities and protect the welfare of dogs by promoting responsible dog ownership
O
wners of dogs found by the police or local authorities not to have a microchip will have the benefits explained to them and be given a short period to comply with the microchipping law. If they do not, they will face a fine of up to £500. Defra is working with database providers and microchip suppliers to ensure minimum standards of service for commercial databases and standards of microchips, and that there is updated implantation guidance and training available as well as a one-stop enquiry point for microchipped lost and found dogs. The idea behind the move is to make tracing ownership easier, tackle the growing problem of strays, promote responsible dog ownership, improve animal welfare and reduce the burden on the taxpayer and welfare charities. Figures from Defra state that each year more than 100,000 dogs are dumped or lost at a cost of £57 million to the taxpayer and welfare charities. 110,000 stray dogs are picked up by police, local authorities and animal welfare charities each year. Over half (52%) of these stray dogs could not be rehomed because their owner could not be identified. 6,000 dogs are put down each year because their owner is unknown and they cannot be rehomed.
Common Questions Will it hurt my dog? No, it does not hurt the dog. No anaesthetic is required and the procedure should cause no more discomfort than a standard vaccination. Does my dog still need to wear a collar? Your dog will still need to wear a collar and tag that states the name and address of the owner when in a public place. But from 6th April 2016 all dogs are required to be microchipped, the chip needs to be linked to the owners most current contact information to be compliant. 20 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON
❱ BY HAYLEY HAMMOND
“Figures from Defra state that each year more than 100,000 dogs are dumped or lost at a cost of £57 million to the taxpayer and welfare charities.” Is there a fine/penalty if I don’t get my dog microchipped? All dogs aged 8 weeks and over must be microchipped by 6th April 2016. To be considered as microchipped, a microchip must have been implanted into your dog and your details recorded on an approved database. If your dog does not have a microchip, or if your current details are not recorded on an approved database, you may be served a notice giving you 21 days to comply. If you do not comply with the notice, you could face a fine of up to £500 on conviction. Alternatively an enforcer, such as a
dog warden, may seize your dog, microchip it and register the details and then recover the cost from you. Do I have to pay to update my details? Yes, you may have to pay a fee every time you amend your contact details to the database. Most databases offer a premium service which often works out cheaper over the course of your dogs life. Check with your provider for more details.

Gardening
Starting Your Vegetable Patch this Spring I love gardening. Every spring I start dreaming of all the veggies I’m going to plant. Have you ever thought about starting a home garden?
W
th food prices rising and more people trying to save money due to the economy, home gardening has taken off in a big way in recent years. Many vegetable seed companies report sales have shot up 30-50%, which is a clear indicator that more people are putting on their gardening gloves and getting to work. Home gardening is a hobby that can bring great joy to your life, enable you to get some free exercise, and bring the entire family together. Although it may not sound exciting on the surface, it’s something you should consider if you enjoy the outdoors
Step 1: Look at Your Sun Availability First, look at your garden. Where do you get the most sun? How much sun does each area get? One of my biggest mistakes when I started gardening was assuming that my garden needed 8 hours of sun every day. The truth is that many vegetables grow very well in part shade; that is, if they get at least 3 hours of sun, or consistent dappled sun throughout the day. What grows well in part shade? Here’s a list of 10 types of vegetables to get you started: • Salad Greens, such as leaf lettuce, endive, and cress. • Broccoli • Cauliflower • Peas • Brussels Sprouts • Radishes • Swiss Chard • Leafy Greens, such as spinach, and kale • Beans These 6 vegetables, on the other hand,
❱ BY HAYLEY HAMMOND grow best in full sun: • Tomatoes • Potatoes • Aubergine • Peppers • Squash • Sweetcorn You can also save money on your vegetables by purchasing them from independent nurseries or garden centres.
Step 2: Look at Your Space Now look at the land or space you have to work with. Remember, you don’t need a lot of space to grow a garden! If you’re working with limited space, then you’ll want to consider two options: container gardening, and vertical gardening.
Vertical Gardening If space is short then instead of planting a garden out (like a traditional garden in the ground, go up. For instance, you can attach rain gutters to the side of your house and plant shallow crops, like lettuce and herbs, in them. You can use canvas hanging shoe organizers off your patio for shallow crops. You can build outdoor shelving and have several layers of pots on your patio. You can use your garden fence to grow climbing veggies like peas and cucumbers. There are tons of creative (and frugal) ways to plant fruits and vegetables in your garden. If you do have some extra space to work with, you’ll be able to plant your veggies right in the ground. You’ll first need to rip up the grass (or whatever plants are currently growing there) and till the soil, making it nice and loose for the vegetables you’ll be planting. You’ll probably also want to put up some
Container Gardening Don’t limit your search to traditional terra cotta pots! For instance, you can grow herbs and greens in chipped teapots and vintage olive oil cans (as long as you put sand or stones at the bottom for drainage). These containers can be picked up for pence at car boot sales, and have a lot more character than traditional terra cotta pots or plastic pots! 22 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON
kind of fencing to keep animals out. This doesn’t have to be expensive; even chicken wire will work.
Step 3: Consider Your Watering Needs How are you going to water your garden? Is the site you’ve selected easily accessed by your hose pipe? It’s important to analyse how you’re going to water your garden before you plant it. And, now is a good time to seriously consider investing in a water butt. I have two, and they are essential in the summer months for keeping my garden well watered rather than increasing my water bill.
Step 4: Plant Your Garden Once you’ve analysed your light, selected a site, and prepared the garden, you can now start planting! Make sure you give your plants a drink of water before you stick them in the garden; this wets the root ball and makes it less likely they’ll go into shock when you transplant them. Your garden will likely need water at least twice a week. Of course, this depends on how much rain you get, and what you’ve planted. Research the plants you’re growing so you’re informed on how much water they need. As a rule, it’s best to water either early in the morning or later in the evening; watering during the heat of afternoon sun can actually burn your plants. Asking children to help can be a very rewarding task for them as they will be very proud to serve their home grown potatoes to granny and grandad on their next visit! Not to mention teaching them responsibility to water and nurture your vegetables.

Win The Golden Ticket Boston May Fair is always a special time of year for young, and not so young. But this year it will again be extra special for one lucky youngster - the winner of the coveted golden ticket ❱ BY ANDREW MALKIN, BOSTON BOROUGH COUNCIL
O
nce again the Showmen's Guild of Great Britain has agreed that one lucky reader will win the golden ticket – a ticket to ride... all the rides at the fair as many times as they want. Paul Maltby, Secretary of the Derby, Notts, Mid and South Lincs Section of the Showmen's Guild of Great Britain, said: “This will be the third year that a lucky youngster has had a chance to win a golden ticket at Boston May Fair. It is always great fun and always brilliant to see the
smile on the winner’s face when they receive their golden ticket.” Last year the showmen decided to allow TWO golden ticket winners. First out of the hat was Emi-Mai Forman. But as she was only four-years-old the May Fair showmen agreed another name should be pulled out to give an older person the chance of enjoying the bigger thrill rides that Emi-Mai could not go on. Next out was 12-year-old Ben Walker. Emi-Mai, of Mill Lane, Butterwick, and Ben, of Horncastle Road, Boston, received their
golden tickets as VIP guests at the annual May Fair proclamation by Boston Mayor on the steps of the Gallopers on Fish Hill in Boston Market Place. This year’s winner will also be part of the special May Fair proclamation, receiving their ticket from Boston Mayor, Cllr Richard Austin, and a representative from the Showmen’s Guild of Great Britain, as tradition dictates, on the steps of the Gallopers at noon on Saturday, April 30. The fair will open for business in the Market
“The fair is rated as being in the top five street fairs in the country. Families of showmen have been coming to Boston for generations, occupying the same pitches with their rides and stalls, which are jealously guarded.”

Place in Boston at 11am that day. The May Fair is an event all the family can enjoy. Young and older enjoy the rides and the other attractions. Boston's town centre will be completely taken over by a wide variety of fairground attractions, including thrill rides, children's rides, game and food stalls from Saturday, April 30, until Saturday, May 7. It will be open from 11am to 11pm on both Saturdays, from 11am to 10.30pm on weekdays and from 1pm to 9pm on the Sunday. The civic proclamation ceremony is attended by VIP guests including mayors and mayoresses from neighbouring authorities and representatives of the
Showmen’s Guild. They will then enjoy themselves on the rides – usually doing battle on the dodgems. The fair is rated as being in the top five street fairs in the country. Families of showmen have been coming to Boston for generations, occupying the same pitches with their rides and stalls, which are jealously guarded.

❱ BY TIM BARNES-CLAY, MOTORING JOURNALIST
he French-made Renault Kadjar is one rung higher up the greasy pole than many of its competitors. You see, there are lots of Qashqai clones on the market, but the Kadjar genuinely shares the popular Nissan’s platform and power units. What’s more, the car is cheaper to buy than the fashionable Qashqai and has that extra sprinkling of French flair. The front-wheel-drive 1.6 dCi 130 Signature Nav, on test here, is impressive. The turbo-charged oil-burner starts out fairly meekly, but then things under the bonnet hot up, resulting in plenty of mid-range pull. This is satisfying because it means you don’t need to work the gears hard to utilise the clout on tap. Push the Renault into twisty country lanes and the car stays bonded to the tarmac. There’s a little bit of body roll noticeable, but it never disturbs ride comfort. In fact, the Kadjar arouses confidence in this sort of driving environment due to its consistently wellweighted steering. The brakes are excellent, although their urgency takes you by surprise on occasion. However, a capacity for quickly scrubbing-off-speed is no bad thing. The gearshift-action is a little heavy, and some diesel-din sneaks into the interior when the whip is cracked, but this Renault is not the sort of car bought by out-andout driving enthusiasts. It is a vehicle that will spend the majority of its time in town, on the school run or on family outings. Unsurprisingly then, the Kadjar is comfy for a family-of-four and handles scarred, urban road surfaces well, due to its nicely-cushioned suspension set-up. The boot is better than the Qashqai’s, in terms of load space, and it has the same ingenious flooring that can be elevated, dropped, or used as a partition to
26 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON
keep your possessions from tumbling about. Indeed, the Kadjar is a pleasant place to be, due, in no small part, to it having one of finest cabin’s in its class. From a tech point of view, the glass is just as full. The sat-nav system is a doddle and – in this flagship model – the car comes fully loaded with a top-quality Bose sound system, Bluetooth, faux leather upholstery, and a panoramic sunroof. Definitely more important than cabin toys is a car’s safety prowess. And the Kadjar has layer upon layer of kit to keep you protected. Equipment includes traffic sign recognition, lane-departure assist and even parking sensors at the front and the rear of the car. As mentioned, the Signature Nav is the top of the tree model, so unless you really need all the trimmings, you’ll enjoy the Kadjar just as much in its slightly lowerdown-the ladder ‘Dynamique’ guise. The car is still wellappointed and represents excellent value for money, whether bought outright on a PCP finance deal. To be honest, it’s hard to justify buying a Nissan Qashqai now that the Kadjar is on the scene. The car is just a good-looking, it’s great to drive, it has a bigger boot and its price-tag is lower. Unless you’re desperate to have the Qashqai moniker ornamenting your drive, save yourself some cash and go for the French marque instead.
