Welcome
to the December issue What are your Christmas traditions? Do you spend Christmas Day at home with all the family or do you venture out and let someone else do all the cooking? Do you go away for Christmas, either in the UK or abroad? Whatever you do it’s always a good opportunity to relax after the inevitable craziness of December! At the very least it’s a chance to pause and take a deep breath before you hit the January sales! Whatever you are doing family and friends are often at the heart of our celebrations so make sure you enjoy every minute. We take a look at a few gifts you might like to buy as well as some recipes for Boxing Day which won’t take up too much of your relaxation time! Elsewhere in the issue we look at the importance of having a Will – it’s not something we think about in our day to day lives but once you are gone – especially if you have children – do you want your wishes to be known rather than the courts deciding? It’s not as difficult as procedure as you might think to get a Will put into place so if you haven’t already got one then now is as good a time as any to get it done. We also look at care options for the elderly, if you have a loved one who has recently found they are not coping so well on their own any more then there are choices available to them which you can help with. All that remains is for me to wish you all a very merry Christmas and wish you all the best for 2016. Enjoy the issue.

Cadets on CD Being a police cadet is not all about the rough, tough world of preparing to collar villains. Some of Boston’s cadets showed their gentler nature when they took part in a poetry and music project. The cadets joined with local musician Liz Lenten to explore, in words and music, what the Magna Carta meant to them as part of an Arts Council-funded project. Their efforts have been reproduced on a CD – Poets Laureate Lincolnshire Landscape 2015. The cadets were inspired by poetry by Carol Ann Duffy, the poet laureate, Gillian Clarke, the national poet of Wales, and Imtiaz Dharker, holder of the Queen’s Award for Poetry. They had been commissioned by Lincolnshire County Council to write a poetic response for the Magna Carta’s 800th anniversary. Lincolnshire has one of the best-preserved original copies of the document. Liz, a singer, songwriter and composer from
Gosberton Risegate, said: “It was interesting working with the cadets, discussing the impact of the Magna Carta then and now and the effects it has on democracy. It was interesting to hear their view on such issues as civil rights.” Together they wrote and recorded two of the six tracks on the CD – Look Where We Are Now and King John Rap. Liz said she was especially impressed with Cadet Ross Tarry’s idea of looking at the Magna Carta from the perspective of King John and then the way he and the other cadets developed the rap. Liz and her partner, Wan Hewitt, provided musical backing and recorded and mixed the tracks at their Scarlet Records studio at Gosberton Risegate (www. scarletmusicservices.co.uk) before they were mastered to professional broadcast standard. The Boston Lithuanian Community Group also participated and created four radio plays.

Mobile CCTV
Boston Borough Council operates one of the best and most up-to-date CCTV systems, but did you know that there is also a mobile CCTV system in operation, travelling the streets of the borough five days every week. The council’s bin lorries are each equipped with four CCTV cameras, offering 360 degree non-stop recording as they go about their business. The cameras serve several different purposes – they can be used for the safety and protection of the crew and the public and to improve efficiency and customer service. CCTV evidence can be called upon to investigate customer complaints – for instance, to check how a bin collection has been missed – confirming whether or not the bin had actually been presented at the time of collection. Images can also be used when there are issues around overloaded or contaminated bins. The cameras have already proved useful in providing evidence in cases of driving without due care and attention – one in which an impatient car driver put the bin men in danger by overtaking the lorry on the footpath. In another incident CCTV footage showed the circumstances in which two other vehicles were in collision as they were driven near a passing bin lorry. The footage settled the argument about who was to blame. The system is also proving beneficial in the support of other council functions including planning enforcement and council tax investigations. “They are all-seeing eyes on the vehicles which travel along every road in the borough where there is refuse to be collected.”

Every year Lawton’s Executive Coaches chooses a different town to visit with their loyal & generous customers for our Help 4 Heroes and Darren Grose Charity Fundraiser Shopper, which is a yearly event and has now been running for six years and on Sat 7 Nov it was decided by vote to go to thecentre: mk at Milton Keynes. Darren Grose is the son of an exdriver who had a stroke in 2006 when in his 30’s. His body is in a ‘locked in state’ and needs 24hr care. The amount collected this year was an amazing £675 bringing the total raised to date to more than £7000. The wheelchair-friendly vehicle is always driven voluntarily by an experienced driver whilst the coach & diesel is donated free of charge, so that 100% of the money collected is given 50/50 to these two worthy causes. Cheques have already been paid to both of these charities.

Cigarette mini bins giveaway Market Place shoppers were delighted to pick up the bargain of the day on Wednesday – a FREE gift to help them avoid picking up a £75 littering fine. Boston Borough Council’s environmental enforcement team, helped by Boston Big Local colleagues, manned a market stall to give away handy reusable pocket or handbag cigarette mini bins. Boston Big Local funded the mini bins as part of its efforts to meet the request of residents to clean up the town’s streets. Cigarette ends and related discarded litter are some of the most difficult to gather up. But it shouldn’t be thrown down in the first place – cigarette ends are officially litter when thrown down in the street, and anyone caught could face a £75 fixed penalty. Doreal Parras (50), from Fishtoft, would rather not be a smoker, but admits she has been hooked since she was about ten. She was pleased to accept a free cigarette mini bin and said she was careful about not throwing down cigarette ends because she didn’t want children to pick them up and develop a habit. She said she had given up smoking before, once for a year, but said it was difficult to quit and stay that way because of the physical and psychological addiction. “I am a smoker myself, but I would hate for my grandchildren to be smokers,” she said. The FREE cigarette mini bins are available from the reception desk at the council’s West Street offices.
Rogue landlords Continuing to work with landlords to improve housing conditions in Boston is the best way forward, a meeting of Boston Borough Council’s Cabinet heard. Cllr Ben Evans, portfolio holder for housing, property and community, responded as members discussed how difficult it was to recover the costs of taking landlords to court. The debate follows a recent campaign by the Local Government Association which has asked for tough new measures – including jail sentences –to tackle rogue landlords when all else has failed. LGA research found it can take up to 16 months to prosecute a rogue operator. LGA Environment spokesman Cllr Peter Box, said: “The current system for prosecuting rogue landlords is not fit for the 21st century. Rogue landlords are exploiting this and endangering tenants’ lives. The system allows landlords to treat fines as ‘operating costs’ and they can offset these against the profits they are raking
Discover Volunteering runs exciting competition in Boston Friday 23rd October saw the culmination of Boston’s Short Story Writing Competition for young people organised by Discover Volunteering on behalf of Young Lincolnshire and LCVYS. Young people from across the borough were involved in the planning and judging of this competition which attracted over 80 entries across the age groups. The 15 judges had a difficult task due to the high quality of entries. Over 40 people, including the winners and runners up, family and friends attended the celebration evening at the Revue Bar in Blackfriars Arts Centre. The organisers would like to thank Boston Library for their support and also Sarah Moore from Boston’s Waterstones store who helped in providing a venue
in. We need a system which protects the good landlords, whose reputation is being dragged down by the bad ones. “Councils are doing everything they can to tackle bad practice by rogue landlords. However, they are being hamstrung by a system wracked by delays, bureaucracy and feeble fines. “Magistrates should be able to take the seriousness of the offence into consideration and jail rogue landlords who put lives at risk. Fines must match the offence and the impact on tenants, not just the landlords’ ability to pay - which is an open invitation for exploitation. We are also urging the Government to establish a national database of rogue landlords, which councils can access.” Between April, 2014, and March, 2015, Boston Borough Council, under its Rogue Landlords project, formally inspected 188 properties – many more were visited but excluded for formal inspection. It issued 249 notices, prohibited five properties from being used, removed three
for meetings, in the judging and provided vouchers for the runners up. Matt Warman MP for Boston and Skegness presented the Certificates and prizes on the evening. Matt also read the winning story in the under 12’s age group. The winners who all received a Certificate and £50 were; Age 5 to 11 category: Thomas McMeechan Age 12 to 16 category: Myles McEvoy Age 17 to 21 category: Daisy Reid The 8 Highly Commended stories which received a Waterstones voucher and a certificate were written by: Olivia Clay, Harriet Moore, Isabelle Harmon-Chaffinch, Olivia Atkinson, Harry Blackman, Sam Despicht, Malena Baxter and Joshua Brooks.
sheds which were being lived in, visited 43 properties with the police and 30 landlords were subject to formal enforcement action. Many properties were improved but some landlords were prosecuted. In the most recent case Daniel Barry Matson pleaded guilty by letter, having failed to appear before magistrates on two previous occasions, to offences connected with the property at 3 South Terrace, Boston. Boston Magistrates on Monday, October 19, fined him £2,500, ordered him to pay £1,765.75 costs and a £120 victim surcharge - a total of £4385.75 – for failure to comply with a full improvement notice . The court was shown photographs illustrating human waste coming up into bath from defective toilet and macerator, an occupant using a gas stove on a timber floor to cook food, water penetration through a ground floor ceiling, a taped-up double electric socket at low level in the front ground floor bedroom, used by a family of three including an infant, and a steep unguarded staircase. Each issue Peter Bedford, leader of Boston Borough Council, discusses the important topics in and around Boston It’s wasn’t a long, hot summer. It was OK, but not one for the sunshine record books. Despite that the solar panels the council fitted to the roof of the Princess Royal Sports Arena have exceeded expectations. From the “on” switch being first thrown on June 18 to the first calculations being made on September 28 – just a couple of days more than 14 weeks – the panels have gathered 38,428.39 kwh of free energy from the sun worth £6,800. In little more than a quarter of a year the panels have returned almost half of the anticipated revenue for a full year. This is brilliant news and completely justifies the council’s decision to fit the £104,000 363-panel system. It has generated £3,800 in Feed-in Tariff payment – the Government payment made for onsite generation – and saved £3,000 in the PRSA’s electricity costs. On top of that it will also save more than 35 tonnes of carbon emissions being released into the atmosphere every single year. The PRSA is in a location which is not served by main gas, so energy costs have always been high. The solar array is only part of the answer to the high fuel costs. The LPG (liquified petroleum gas) system, which also contributes to the high energy costs, is to be replaced with a low carbon 500kw biomass boiler. Over 20 years it is forecast that this investment will produce a return of around £2million made up of fuel savings and Renewable Heating Incentive. The project is already making good on its promise of making and saving cash for the council to pay for repairs and improvements at the centre. Sport, leisure and recreation experts 1Life have now taken on full
responsibility for the centre. The council will fund repairs and improvements to bring the centre up to an improved handover condition – costs covered by savings made by energy efficiency improvements. The sport, leisure and recreation experts have a full repair and renew lease for the site, relieving borough council tax payers of any future financial responsibility. The solar panels on the roof of the PRSA are just part of a greater energy efficiency package to also include the Geoff Moulder Leisure Complex, where it is planned to install a biomass boiler and replace ageing pumps with more energy-efficient units. This all all points to a great future for the PRSA. The agreement with 1Life follows the council’s proven track record of partnership working with Boston College, Witham Academies Federation and Boston Amateur Swimming Club leading to improvements to the Peter Paine Sports Centre and the Geoff Moulder Leisure Complex, both showing increases in gym and swimming pools use. The partner organisations have injected cash into the facilities and had access to grant funding the council could not tap into, helping to drive forward attendances in all areas of exercise and fitness. Peter Paine had a £2 million investment provided by the college. Cllr Peter Bedford

With us, you great quality and fantastic value for money We all want our children to feel that special little tingle in the tummy at Christmas. At Johnsons Garden Centre, on Wainfleet Road Boston, children visit Santa in style - Johnsons Express train. On the way they stop at the ‘Owls Platform’ to meet real, live, snowy owls. The story goes that these magical birds carry messages to Santa from across the world! Then back on the Johnsons Express to meet the big man! Advice
Let’s Talk About Abuse… ❱ BY STUART HELLON
What is Domestic Abuse? The Home Office definition of domestic abuse covers any pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive or threatening behaviour, violence or abuse between people aged 16 or over who are or have been intimate partners or family members regardless of gender or sexuality. It includes the following types of abuse: • psychological • physical • sexual • financial • emotional abuse. Domestic abuse is most commonly experienced by women and perpetrated by men, but also happens in same sex relationships. Men can also experience domestic abuse. Many kinds of domestic abuse such as physical assault, wounding, sexual assault, rape, threats to kill and harassment are criminal offences. Friends and family can be a “lifeline to support” for victims of domestic abuse. Citizens Advice Mid Lincolnshire has highlighted that as many as 1 in 3 people in our area may know someone who is suffering from
domestic abuse, but that many will not know how best to help. On the back of new research from the national charity Citizens Advice, Citizens Advice Mid Lincolnshire is raising awareness of specialist helplines people can call if they suspect someone they know may be in an abusive relationship. Whilst friends and family can play a key role encouraging victims to seek specialist help, they currently face difficulties in helping victims this way. In its new report, A link in the chain, national Citizens Advice finds that most people in Britain do not feel equipped to help someone who is suffering from domestic abuse.
Findings from the report and a survey of over 2,000 British adults conducted by ComRes for Citizens Advice, also reveal: • Those with personal experience of domestic abuse are over three times more likely to say that their friends and family are aware of the abuse (48 per cent) than the police (14 per cent) • Only 16 per cent of British adults said no barriers would discourage them from telling
somebody else about their concerns. • More than 1 in 3 people (36 per cent) who have personally experienced abuse didn’t tell anyone else. Victims can be too afraid or isolated to talk to others about their abuse. As part of a new national campaign, Talk About Abuse, Citizens Advice Mid Lincolnshire is also suggesting the role family and friends already play in supporting victims of domestic abuse should be considered in the UK Government’s announced review of how it approaches domestic abuse. Family and friends can be a lifeline to support for victims of domestic abuse. Those suffering from domestic abuse may feel unable to reach out for help themselves, so people who want to support them need to know the steps they can take and where they can get specialist help. Citizens Advice Mid Lincolnshire is joining the national Talk About Abuse campaign so that we can help ordinary people know how to recognise abuse, talk about it safely and enable victims to make the right decisions for themselves. If you are experiencing domestic abuse, or you are concerned someone you know might be in an abusive relationship, you can seek help by calling confidential free phone helplines. You can also get help and support from Citizens Advice Mid Lincolnshire.
The helplines people can call are: • If the victim is a woman, you can get help from the freephone, twenty-four hour National Domestic Violence Helpline on 0808 2000 247 (run in partnership by Refuge and Women’s Aid). • If the victim is a man, you can get help from the Men’s Advice Line on 0808 801 0327. • If the victim is lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender, you can get specialised help from Broken Rainbow on 0300 999 5428

The Discworld’s arch enemy, the Elves, use Granny Weatherwax’s death as an opportunity to attempt to take control of Discworld. The flaw in their plan is that they hadn’t accounted for Tiffany who, aided by the Nac MacFeegles and her fellow witches, defeats the elven hordes. Exploring life, death, gender stereotypes, good and evil this novel is just as suitable for adults as teenagers.

Wills
The Importance of Writing a Will
E
It’s not something we often think about. After all, nobody likes to think of a time when they are not here. However, a little preparation now can save an awful lot of hassle in the future
ven if you don’t have a Will the chances are you will be familiar with what a Will is. For those who have never heard of one, a Will is a legal document which comes into effect upon the occasion of your death containing your wishes for the distribution of your estate and all of your assets (that is, your house and your belongings). Whilst it might seem a lot of trouble to go through while you are young, fit and healthy if you die without a will then your estate is shared out according to the rules of intestacy. If you die without a will then your spouse or civil partner will inherit. If you are not married to your partner, however, then there is no claim. Partners who are separated but not legally divorced will inherit though. Children of the intestate person will inherit only if there is no surviving married partner. In this case they will only inherit a proportion of the estate if the value is over £250,000. When you die without a will the following people will have no claim to inherit: Unmarried partners or gay or lesbian partners not in civil partnership Relations by marriage Close Friends and Carers If there are no surviving relatives then your estate will pass to the Crown. If that wouldn’t be your wish for your things then now is the time to get a Will written. When writing a Will the best place to start is by making a list of all of your assets, that is the things you own. On this list you will need to include property (not just your home but any other property you might own, both here and overseas), vehicles, savings, bonds and shares and possessions (jewellery, antiques etc). Once you have your list, to put it bluntly it’s time to decide who gets what! It is your opportunity to leave
❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
things of sentimental value to people you know will cherish them as well as any gifts of money to friends and relatives, not just the largest, most valuable items. You should also include details of your wishes regarding your funeral, particularly whether you want to be buried or cremated. If you have children under 18 you will need to name the people who you would like to be their guardian. Also name your executors, that is, the people who are going to carry out all of this for you. Make sure they are happy to do so before you name them! You can keep your Will safely at home or at a bank or with a solicitor (make sure your executors know where the Will is kept). For your will to be legally valid you must ensure that: You are 18 years old or over Make it voluntarily, of your own free will Be of sound mind Make it in writing Sign it in the presence of two witnesses who must also be 18 years old or over Have it signed by your two witnesses in your presence. Be aware that you cannot leave your witnesses or their married partners anything in your Will.
“If there are no surviving relatives then your estate will pass to the Crown. If that wouldn’t be your wish for your things then now is the time to get a Will written.”

Caring for the Elderly
Caring for the Elderly We all want the best for our loved ones. When a friend or relative isn’t coping so well any more then it is time they consider their options
E
verybody values their independence. Being able to do what you want, when you want is an important part of everyday life. As we get older things can happen which affect that independence. A decline in health, both physical and mental can sometimes mean that we can’t get around or do household chores the way we used to. These changes can happen gradually but over time can have a huge impact. If you have a relative who looks as if they are struggling then you can help them to assess their options. If day-to-day living is the issue then a good option is a care home. These are residential homes which provide meals and help with things such as getting washed and dressed and other help where necessary. An ensuite room is the usual accommodation and meals are provided. Your relative can maintain their independence with help available to them where necessary. Should it be a decline in health that has prompted the move (either physically or mentally) then a nursing home should be explored. As well as providing the services you would expect from a care home, nursing homes are also able to provide medical care with specially trained staff and a qualified nurse. If there is a specific mental condition such as Alzheimers there are nursing homes and care homes which specialise in providing care for these conditions so it is worth finding out what care is available. If your relative is well but struggles with the housework then looking at some home help could be the solution. There are agencies which can pop in throughout the day to help with any jobs which are proving too difficult such as cleaning, preparing meals, laundry and shopping. These agencies can also provide help to ensure that prescriptions are collected and are taken correctly. For relatives who are desperate to remain in their homes this can be a good option. Finally, if you have the room and facilities at home, could your relative move in with you? Much as they

cared for you when you were young are you able to now return the favour now they need some assistance? This isn’t always recommended if there are serious health issues but it can be a neat solution. If the space does not permit and your relative lives in a large house then downsizing should be investigated, especially if a move from a house to a bungalow can be made. In our area the average weekly cost for residential care is £555 and nursing care is £655 so cost can play a huge part in your decision making process. There are lots of funding options available from self-funding through to local authority funding and NHS funding so it really isn’t a small decision. SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk |

Boxing Day Recipes
Boxing Day Recipes After all that cooking on Christmas Day, grab the chance to relax on Boxing Day with these lazy recipes ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
Trifle Cake
Small Panettone 800ml whipped cream Zest of 1 orange 2tbsp caster sugar 1 punnet strawberries 1 punnet raspberries Toasted almond flakes to decorate For the syrup: Grated zest of 1 orange Juice of 2 oranges 3tbsp caster sugar 2tbsp Grand Marnier or Cointreau
Begin by making the syrup. Combine the zest, juice and sugar in a pan and bring to the boil, stirring as you go to make sure all of the sugar is dissolved. Simmer for one minute and then leave to cool. Stir in the alcohol. Remove the paper from the panettone, trim off the top and discard. Cut the panettone into 3 or 4 rounds. Drizzle the syrup onto each of the rounds. Beat the cream, orange zest
and caster sugar together until it forms soft peaks. Place one of the rounds on a plate and cover with a layer of whipped cream. Top with raspberries and strawberries. Repeat with the remaining rounds. When the panettone is rebuilt brush with any remaining syrup. Cover the entire cake with cream and top with any remaining raspberries, strawberries and the toasted almonds. Serve immediately.
Leftovers Bubble and Squeak
Any leftover meat, chopped Left over vegetables Left over boiled and roast potatoes 2tbsp olive oil Heat the meat in a pan. Crush the pota toes and add them to the pan. Add the vegetables. Add the olive oil and fry. Serve and enjoy that feeling of having actu ally used some of your leftovers!
Glazed Ham
5kg leg of gammon 150ml apple juice 2 cinnamon sticks 2 star anise 10 whole peppercorns 6 cloves, 4 bay leaves
Zest from 1 orange For the glaze: 250ml maple syrup 50ml apple juice 1tsp ground cinnamon 1tsp ground ginger 2tbsp wholegrain mustard
Heat the oven to 150°. Place the ham into a tin and pour in the apple juice. Top up with 500ml water. Add the spices, bay leaves and orange zest. Cover with tin foil and bake in the oven for around five hours. While the ham is baking mix together the ingredients for the glaze in a saucepan and bubble until reduced to a sticky glaze. Remove the ham from the oven and increase the temperature to 190°. Peel away the rind, leaving a thin layer of fat attached to the meat. Place into a roasting tray, fat side up. Score the fat in a criss-cross pattern and bake again until the fat crisps. Brush the glaze over the ham and return to the oven for 25 minutes. When baked decorate with the star anise and bay leaves and serve. 18 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON

Glam Up For Christmas
Getting Ready in a Hurry Last minute plans can lead to the best nights out but if time isn’t on your side how do you ensure you turn up looking party-ready?
F
or many reasons December is party season, with Christmas parties starting at the beginning of the month and ending with New Year’s Eve on the 31st. Sometimes you will end up staying late at work to get everything finished and find yourself short on time to get ready to go out. Other times it might be a last minute invite that you just can’t turn down! Either way you’ve precious little time but want to look your best. There are a few little tricks to save you precious minutes. Start with clothing selection. It is often said that a little black dress can be a lifesaver as it can be used for any occasion and this is very true in this instance. If your dress is black then your

How to do a TOPKNOT 1) Pull your hair back into a high ponytail. Get it as high as you can and tie with a bobble. 2) Divide the ponytail into two parts and wind each part around the other, starting closest to the bobble. Move in a circular shape and wind the hair completely around the bobble. 3) Secure the knot with hairpins in much the same way as you would secure a bun. 4) Add hairspray for any flyaway ends to keep it neat.
shoes and accessories can be any colour you like. You won’t have to spend a lot of time thinking about whether your dress and shoes are going to look good together. When you are in the bathroom use an inshower moisturiser to save time. Rather than having to shower, dry and then moisturise you can get the same results by using an in-shower alternative. When it comes to applying your make up, choose a good BB Cream and not only will this save you time when you are rushing to get ready but it will save you time in general. Many brands offer their own versions of BB Creams which act as a good all-rounder. It can be used as a primer or a tinted moisturiser, giving a light coverage so you can use it instead of your foundation. If nothing else it is a good pick-me-up for a tired complexion so you can head out of the door looking refreshed! You can even use one item of make-up for your whole look, for example a cream blush will look just as good on your eyes and lips as it does on your cheeks. When you come to do your hair make sure you don’t choose a style that will take up all of your time. There are many styles which take very little time but will leave you looking party-ready such as a messy bun, top knot or half up / half down wavy styles. SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk |

Winter Motoring
Getting your car ready for winter driving Keeping you safe over the coldest months
I
❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
f there is a problem with your car in summer it is far easier to be patient by the roadside while the sun shines down on you. In the cold and miserable weather though conditions can make it far more dangerous. There are a few simple things you can do to try and avoid any problems. Antifreeze. Check your coolant levels regularly and top up if required. If you are not too confident doing this then a local garage will be able to do it quickly for you. Check the battery. This is important for older cars as the older a battery gets the more it struggles in the cold. If you are in any doubt over your battery then get it replaced before the temperature drops. Tyres. Your tyres should have at least 3mm of tread. If you live in a rural area then consider winter tyres or even snow chains. As well as the tread make sure you regularly check the tyre pressure. Windscreen Wipers. Windscreens can become very dirty in the winter, make sure your wiper blades are in good condition.
“In case of a breakdown take a blanket so you can keep yourself warm.”
Windscreen Wash. The low sun in winter can give a real glare and a dirty windscreen can result in you being dazzled so make sure your windscreen is always clean and use a good quality screen wash as it is less likely to freeze during frosty weather. Fuel. Make sure that where possible you have enough fuel to get to and from your destination plus extra for traffic delays to ensure you never run out of fuel. The Right Equipment. There are items you can take which will help you in the event of an emergency. First and foremost if you have breakdown cover then have the details with you. Take a fully charged mobile phone so you can contact them if necessary. In case of a breakdown take a blanket so you can keep yourself warm. In case of snow a shovel, salt, an ice scraper and a piece of old carpet for traction can be helpful. Extra screen wash is also handy as you go through more in the winter than you do in the summer. Not being able to clean your windscreen can be very dangerous. And year-round, make sure you have jumper cables.
How to jump-start a car If your battery dies then a jump start can quickly have you back on your way. Knowing how to use your cables properly is very important though. Here’s how it’s done: 1) Park both cars in neutral and switch off the engines. Make sure that the cars are parked closely enough that the cables can comfortably reach each vehicle. 2) Connect the first end of the red positive lead to the positive terminal on the working battery (usually denoted by a “+” sign). Do the same for the other end of the lead for the flat battery.
22 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON
3) Connect the black negative lead to the negative terminal on the working battery (usually denoted by a “-“ sign). Attach the other end to a metal point away from the dead battery. 4) Check the leads are away from any moving parts and
then start the engine of the working car. 5) After a minute try starting the car with the dead battery. 6) Once you have your car running leave the engine on for a couple of minutes to charge the battery. 7) Remove the jump leads
in reverse order to the way you attached them. Make sure they don’t touch each other or any metal surfaces. 8) Drive for at least 30 minutes to give the battery ample opportunity to charge. 9) If you cannot start the engine then you will need to get in touch with your breakdown cover provider as there may be a bigger problem with your car.

It also boasts the highest ground clearance and is among the lightest vehicles in its class, aiding its genuine off-road ability, while a low centre of gravity enhances on-road handling. Recently, changes to the XV’s suspension have resulted in a smoother, more compliant ride but without sacrificing any of the stability that the XV is renowned for. However, among the most important improvements is a revised cabin, which now features better-quality materials and an all-new touchscreen infotainment and navigation system. The 7.0inch touchscreen display allows smartphone-style control, with a swipe and pinch function for map displays. The screen echoes the new blue glow of the driver’s instrument binnacle which has been completely redesigned with new graphics. The infotainment system also now houses a standardfit rear view camera, offering a crystal clear wide 160-degree field of view behind the car when reversing. The XV receives an extra USB jack too, allowing you to listen to music from one USB-compatible device while charging another at the same time. The centre-console cup holders have also been re-designed and now feature a sliding cover. In addition, you can expect to find traction control, front, side, curtain and knee airbags, 17-inch alloy wheels, and daytime LED running lights. Furthermore, noise from inside the cabin has been reduced, thanks to more sound-absorbent material being placed throughout the car. This does well in cutting the intrusion of engine, wind and road racket into the cabin. The XV’s underbody cover has also been reshaped to reduce wind noise around the
rear of the Subaru, while thicker glass for the front side windows and front quarter lights further reduces wind roar. The XV is therefore a hushed vehicle to drive - and a lively one, too. A decent electronic power steering system helps the drive by giving good stability and feel. There’s a nice weight about the steering too, giving you the confidence to manoeuvre swiftly and precisely. My diesel powered XV 2.0 SE Premium press car came with Subaru’s sixspeed manual transmission. The gear change is smooth and accurate, although the clutch is a bit heavy. Into the bargain, safety has been improved, with reinforcements around the base of the pillars that hold either side of the Subaru’s windscreen in place. This yields further improvements in the XV’s Euro NCAP five-star crash safety performance. In fact, the model has another ace up its sleeve: with a score of 90 per cent, it has one of the highest marks in the industry for child protection. So, if crossovers do it for you, this could be one to think about. Some cheap-looking cabin plastics are still noticeable here and there, but the XV is a sound choice if you’re keen to keep your family in safe hands.
