Welcome to the December issue Happy Christmas! I am sitting here writing my welcome and I am looking out onto a very miserable day, wet, grey and cold. I actually quite like the winter, wrapping up, sharp frosts and Christmas but the one thing I cannot stand is drizzle and rain. Over the last month we have had a busy few weeks in the Hammond household, a big ‘Spring’ clean to make room for the impending arrival of Santa’s delivery of more goodies for the little one, celebrating my stepfathers 65th birthday and a weekend away in Norfolk. That’s without Halloween, bonfire night and a couple of children’s parties thrown into the mix. As much as I love being busy nothing beats a pj day, films on the TV, some yummy food and hot chocolates all round and that’s what we have planned for the weekend, Do Not Disturb! As you’d expect this issue is all about Christmas, and is a jam-packed one! As much as we help you prepare for Christmas with recipes and Martin Lewis offering his advice on managing Christmas finances we look at other important topics too. We have a guide to repairs and updates in the home, tips on how to get the kids up and active as well as advice on how to help the elderly this winter. As always we are looking for charities, community groups and events to feature in our local focus, so if you are involved in anything happening locally please get in touch to discuss further. All that’s left for me to say is to have a great month and a very MERRY CHRISTMAS

NEWS £100 dog poo fine Tougher new rules to get dog owners to clean up after their pets have been approved by Boston Borough Council’s Cabinet. From February 1 it will be an offence in Boston borough if a dog walker cannot show that they have with them the means to clean up after their dog. The fine will be £100, but there will now be a period of education so that the public is informed before fines are levied. Cllr Michael Brookes, the Cabinet member with responsibility for waste services, said: “The only people this control will affect are irresponsible dog owners who do not clean up or have consideration for others.” Cllr Aaron Spencer said the council was getting tough because it now could. He said he had received many requests in his ward from residents for more action against those who failed to clean up after their pets. The fine for failing to clean up after your dog will also be doubled from £50 to £100. In addition dog owners could also be fined £100 for allowing their dog into an enclosed children’s play area or refusing to put a dangerous or nuisance dog on a lead. The new powers to control dogs are being introduced under the Antisocial Behaviour Crime and Policing Act 2014 which allows councils to create a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO). Public consultation showed that 90 per cent were in favour of it being an offence for dog walkers not to carry a bag or the means at all times to clean up after their dog. And 74 per cent agreed the fine should be £100. Dog poo bags are available for free from Boston Borough Council’s Municipal Buildings offices.

Queen’s visit The Mayor may have had the grandeur of the robes but for one day only he was topped by a “royal” visitor to the council offices. Cllr Stephen Woodliffe and Mayoress, Catharine Woodliffe, were hosts to HRH Doreen, Queen of Boston. Queen Doreen’s VIP visit was her treat for being chosen as Boston’s own lookalike Queen on the occasion of celebrations to mark the real Queen’s 90th birthday. Doreen Booth, from Boston, was given a guided introduction to the borough’s regalia and then sat down to tea and cakes in the Mayor’s parlour with

the Mayor and Mayoress and Jenny Elwick, of Boston Town Team and Boston’s Queen’s birthday celebrations organiser.

Boston’s newest honorary freeman has stressed the importance of volunteering, teamwork and positivity. Alison Fairman, currently the chairman of Boston’s gold award-winning in-bloom committee, told a packed council chamber: “Volunteering is very important to me; it is all about being a member of a team. Yes, we have challenges ahead in this time of austerity; we have the same challenges as every other town, we are not unique in that. “Let’s not focus on what divides us, but let’s focus on what brings us together. We have got to be positive in what we are and what we can do together. “Thank you for these amazing gifts and thank you for this singular honour, I hope to be worthy of it.” The ceremony, attended by Boston Borough Councillors and Alison’s family , friends and colleagues, was the first since 2006. Cllr Claire Rylott, nominating Alison, gave details of Alison’s active involvement in the community since arriving in Boston in 1979. A long list began with her work with Boston Citizens’

Advice Bureau in 1980 through to the latest in-bloom gold award this year. The official wording recognises “the significant contribution she has made to numerous organisations in the Alison Fairman with her proud husband, fourth from left, and family. Borough area”. Little ones wearing their tutus, went on an imaginary journey with Peppa and George Pig from their classroom to being Princes and Princesses at Buckingham Palace where they danced in front of the Queen. Together the 13,500 babyballet stars from across the country have raised over £260,000 for Tommy’s vital research into stillbirth, premature birth and miscarriage. Vote for memorial garden

An appeal has been issued for support for a bid for funding for a project to develop a memorial garden near Boston for all of Lincolnshire’s road accident victims. Appeal organiser Anne Bourne is asking for votes for the project on the Aviva community fund website. Got to http://www.aviva.co.uk/ good-thinking/community-fund/ and click on the “Vote now” tab. It will ask you to register and once you have done that you will have up to ten votes per person to use. Search projects for “Lincolnshire Road Victims Memorial” and you can use all ten votes to support the appeal. The plan is to develop a restful memorial space in Boston’s Westgate Woods accessible by all, for relatives, friends and colleagues to come and remember those who have died in tragic circumstances on county roads. Anne, of Boston, lost her daughter in a horrendous crash in which four people died and five children were left without their mothers. Her other daughter was seriously injured. If you want to make a donation you can pay in to the Louise and Sarah Memorial Fund at Lloyds Bank, account number 01303486, sort code 30-91-04

new gateway to Boston is taking shape, demonstrating a welcome to a town which is developing in an exciting and vibrant way. Those travelling on the A16 are already greeted by modern business premises before reaching the new roundabout at Wyberton with the promise of new development on both sides of the main road. There will shortly be new residential and commercial development on one side and a new community-centred football stadium on the other. Construction work has been continuing apace for the past few weeks and now sets the scene for Boston’s new quarter, presenting a new face for those arriving to do business, shop, use leisure facilities and live here. The Quadrant has so far seen sensitive construction of a new roundabout with minimal disruption to traffic and now paves the way for the new distributor road through to London Road. Work on the London Road end of this new route will begin shortly

NEW GATEWAY TO BOSTON

The new road will relieve some of the traffic which currently crosses Boston town centre and will open up land for 146 new homes and commercial use. The total new homes for the entire project will number 502. On the other side the new road will lead to the new home of Boston United and a modern stadium built with added-value community use in mind. The new A16 approach is heralded by two new commercial premises at Kirton – the Sports Bike Shop, which is now open for business, and a new showroom for Duckworth Jaguar and Land Rover, due to open early next year. All of this signals a bright future for Boston and demonstrates the confidence that business have in the area. And don’t forget the regular stall market held in the Market Place every Wednesday and Saturday, come rain or shine. Just the place to be for all types of bargains and fresh fruit and veg. The town’s biggest Christmas event happens on Thursday, November 24, when the town’s Christmas lights will be switched

This month, Julie a volunteer adviser at the local Charity answers a selection of questions from her clients: I am not sure if my friends and family will like what I’ve bought them for Christmas. If they don’t like their presents can they exchange them? You don’t have an automatic right to get your money back if you just change your mind about something you’ve bought and there’s nothing wrong with it. Debt problems in the New Year

Citizens Advice always sees a big surge in debt problems in the New Year with people in a desperate state because they’ve run up thousands of pounds worth of debt just to cover their Christmas spending, and they have no idea how they’re going to pay it back. No one wants to see their children go without presents and we all deserve a few treats but the ¬heartache of spiraling debt is not worth blowing your whole budget. It’s all too easy to overspend, but a bit of planning before the festive season can stop you falling into debt . ecently previous Boston College lecturer, Army, Navy and RAF chef Lisa Howarth visited the College to inspire Catering and Hospitality students and to share her many experiences with them. Lisa previously taught at Boston College as a Chef Lecturer, before returning to a career in the RAF, now based in Coningsby. Prior to working at Boston College she had worked in the Army, Navy and the RAF as a Chef, meaning that she has a wealth of experience within the catering industry, from cooking on board battle ships at sea to catering in tents. During her visit to Boston College, Lisa spent the morning in the kitchen with catering students, working alongside them to prepare the lunch time menu. This was very valuable time for the students as they were able to get to know Lisa and to ask her any questions that they had about catering careers within the military. Over the years, Lisa has become aware of the hypothetical issues that put students off following a career in the RAF, Army or Navy, and this provided the perfect opportunity for her to explain the reality of military life for a chef and tell them about her personal experiences. Family life

Help your family

get active

W

hen it comes to heart health, it’s important that we think not only of our own cardiovascular health but also that of future generations. A study last year found that obese children and teens have as much plaque in their arteries as a 45-year-old adult, setting them up for heart disease and other serious health conditions much earlier than their parents. If you’ve got kids, of course you want to make sure they grow up fit and healthy, but you also know it’s hard to juggle work, family, and physical activity. Still, setting a healthy example is a good start; research shows that parents who are physically active increase the likelihood that their kids will be active as well. So if you’re looking for ways to get your kids involved, check out these tips.

Plan outdoor activities Set aside one day a weekend to do something active as a family: swimming in the summer, or walking in the winter, or biking is good all year round. Taking along a picnic lunch—and splurging on some healthy

What to Do if You Find your Teenager Smoking

snacks after a good workout—will help the day go by without a complaint.

Take classes together Ask around at fitness clubs and community centers in your area about yoga or aerobics classes offered to parents and kids together. If your little one is too young to participate, look for classes that help you burn calories with your baby by incorporating them into your yoga moves or pushing them along during stroller workouts.

Redo your playroom Too often, a lounge or playroom is the center of laziness in a home: a comfy couch, a video-game console, a shelf full of DVDs, and nothing to encourage fitness or physical activity. There are ways to add in subtle reminders, however, without overhauling your entire room or dragging in a giant piece of workout equipment. Set a time limit on weekly television

The earlier that children begin smoking, the more likely they will become addicted. So what do you do if you find out that your children has been smoking? Try not to keep him or her away from friends, no matter if you think they are the ones influencing them. This wouldn’t be an effective punishment as they need your help and your understanding as they try to overcome the temptations to smoke. There are many reasons why children begin to smoke. Some are related to the physical pleasures involved in smoking, but my bet is that peer pressure and because they thinks it’s cool that he or she has friends who think the same way. Scare stories such as they will die from lung cancer or the “black lung” routine probably won’t affect the decision making because most young

Family Life viewing and why not leave a set of dumbells or resistance bands close by and set a family challenge for every ad break that it’s exercise time – who can do the most press ups? Squats? Star Jumps?

Make chores fun Instead of relegating each member of the family to doing separate chores by themselves, turn chores into a game you can all do together. Race to see how fast you can get the house cleaned, and then try to beat your old time the next week. Play music while you’re doing the washing, and enlist the kids to sing and dance while helping to fold and put clothes away. Take the dog for walks together, and squeeze in some running, roller-skating, or skipping while you’re at it.

people think they are indestructible or that these things don’t apply as they are so young. Discuss how smoking can impair athletic performance, appeal to others (yellow teeth, bad breath, smelling like an ashtray), and any allowance (of course you can’t continue to give an allowance if the money could possibly be used for cigarettes) would appeal as it affects the here and now Ask them if they would like to find a stop smoking program for teens to get help. Start your search with your GP or nurse at the doctors surgery, don’t worry they will have seen this many times and not think bad of you as a parent. Try this mixture of empathy, support, and practical help. Remember, he’s not trying to defy you by smoking; it’s not easy to stop. Hang in there with him. www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON | 15

Caring for Elderly

I

t’s difficult to witness the deterioration of physical or mental abilities in an aging parent, grandparent or other loved one. This is especially true in remembering the days when we, ourselves, were the recipients of their care. Whether or not we are wellequipped or prepared, the reality remains that many of us will be tasked with making impactful decisions associated with caring for an elderly loved one. Many of us would undoubtedly prefer that our elderly loved ones stay in our homes to ensure they are well taken care of and properly cared for. However, this situation can become very stressful for the family as a whole, since leaving an ageing parent home alone can pose a major issue if they slip and fall with no one around to help or are unable to follow hospital discharge regimens or daily routines on their own. With that said, we all know that life does not stop and give us a break when we take on new challenges or roles, and since nursing home costs continue to increase, today’s technology is striving to make that choice easier by providing families peace of mind in helping elderly loved ones age independently. Here are five things to consider when elderly parents choose to live home alone: Essential Needs Delivered to the Door Healthy eating is an essential component in ensuring physical and emotional well being. Driving can be a challenging activity for an elderly parent, which means basic needs like groceries and medicine refills need to be delivered to the door. To make things a bit simpler, efficient and work-from-home friendly, consider online grocery shopping to help reduce the physical stress of standing in line at the local market store. Online grocery stores allow customers to

Christmas D on’t hate me, I know it’s early, but it’s time to prepare (not celebrate), as Christmas is coming. I hate tinsel and Jingle Bells before December as much as the next man, but many festive savings are only possible if you do them early. This isn’t a trivial message. I’m fed up of every January people telling me they’re skint and when I ask why they reply, “Christmas of course.” Well I can tell you exclusively here, Christmas will be on 25 December this year, so it’s not an unexpected event – there is time to plan in advance to prevent problems. So here are my seven key things you should do now that’ll save you for festivities. I’ve focused on Christmas, but the same techniques work for Chanukah, Eid, and Kwanzaa too.

Agree to not give unnecessary presents. Gifts for kids, grandchildren or your spouse are fine. Yet it’s time to stop the ever growing list of people we buy for even when we’ve no idea what they want, know we’ll end up buying tat that’ll never be used, and add heaps of pressure on ourselves to do so. I’ve been campaigning to end unnecessary gifts for six years, and more and more people are doing it. Yet it involves agreeing a pact not to buy each

Set up a Christmas cupboard. Become a tactical shopper. Work out now what necessary gifts you need to buy, and then if you spot a bargain, you can pounce on it when there’s a code, voucher or discount that makes it cheaper (I put the best in my weekly email at www.mse.me/tips). Even better, as is part of many Money Savers’ Christmas arsenal, once you buy a present, bag it, wrap it, and pop it in a Christmas cupboard – gradually getting the chores done.

other. Even the joy of giving can be selfish if it obligates someone who can’t afford it to buy back. Julia tweeted me a couple of weeks ago: “@MartinSLewis, finally took your advice and told family I can’t afford Xmas presents. What a weight off my mind. Thank you.” So contact friends and family now and make an agreement not to buy, or to cap the cost, only give homemade or even to give to charity instead. See my full ‘why Christmas presents are bad’ explanation at www.mse. me/BanChristmas.

Not saved for it? Do it now – then you can split the cost by three. A typical family Christmas costs around £600-£800 - a huge amount from one month’s salary alone. But if you haven’t Book your train tickets 12 weeks started saving yet, there is still time. Small savings make merry Based on roughly 90 days, 75 working days and 13 weeks left till Christmas. So, if you buy a £2 coffee every work day, just give it up now, put the cash in a Christmas kitty instead and you’ll have £150 by the big day. I’m not telling you to do this, it’s about deciding priorities. If that’s cash you need for Christmas, are you willing to make the sacrifice? Earn 5% cashback on your Christmas shopping. If you’re going to be spending for Christmas, you might as well do it on a card that pays you every time you spend on it. The no annual-fee www.americanexpress. com Platinum Everyday credit card pays you 5% cashback on your first three months’ spending (maximum £100), so get it now and you get the big cashback during the high spend pre-Christmas period. It then follows with up to 1% after. The cashback is paid after a year, so you’ll get it in time to help next Christmas, though there’s a minimum £3,000 spend to get it. That sounds a lot, but do all your normal spending on it as it pays you and you’ll be fine. Of course, only do this if you’ve a direct debit

Not used it since last Christmas? Flog it. Walk around the house and examine everything; it’s time for your annual personal stock clearance. Many old items can be worth serious cash. And if you’ve not used things for a year, whether toys, prams, old coffee makers, mobile phones, gadgets, or even clothes, why not sell them? This isn’t just about eBay or car boot sales; Facebook now has a lot of good local sales groups too that can be an easy way to do this. There are also lots of recycling sites that will pay you for old mobiles and gadgets – just make sure you do your research first to find the one that’ll give you the most.

Food & drink special

Casual Dining

H

istorically, the ancient Greeks covered their bread with locally sourced oils, herbs and cheese. Modern pizza evolved from similar flatbread dishes in Naples in the 18th or early 19th century. Prior to that time, flatbread was often topped with ingredients such as garlic, salt, lard, cheese, and basil. Pizza has come a long way since then and although we offer a variety of Italian toppings we specialise, like the ancient Greeks, in using locally sourced produce.

Casual Dining Enjoy our no frills, inexpensive, quality, dining experience, the single course place to eat. Feeling especially hungry? Why not try our specialist garlic and caramelised onion pizza bread on the side? Those requiring further nourishment need only head to the bar! The Sauce Our unique recipe boasts a delicious blend of locally sourced peppers, tomatoes, onions shallots and herbs, roasted to perfection in our log fired oven to create the ultimate pizza sauce. Toppings Imported Italian pepperoni, award winning Lincolnshire sausage, homemade caramelised onion, smoked streaky bacon and fresh

pineapple cut to order. ADD Sliced peppers or fresh red onion. Like it hot? Ask us for La Nduja Calabresa picante (spicy sausage) or our home grown chillies to heat things up. Ground Steak Burgers Best Ground 100% steak with no additives form our homemade 6oz burgers. Presented in a toasted brioche bun with salad and homemade relish, accompanied by Steph`s secret recipe coleslaw and hand cut crisps. Definitely mouthwatering. The Punchbowl Garden Enjoy our award winning garden. Best Public House, Spalding and District. Gold award, East Midlands in Bloom and Best Pub Garden in East Anglia, Enterprise Inns.

Winter Maintenance for the Home

H

ome maintenance can continue during the winter months but obviously most of it is going to be inside. Your home maintenance checks for Autumn, Summer and Spring should have removed any likelihood of emergency outside repairs, so an indoor maintenance schedule is called for. Some of the work will be to ensure that the home is well insulated against heat loss and repair bills are kept to a minimum. Loft insulation needs to be checked and all pipework and tanks should be insulated. Take special care with gatevalves and stopcocks. Make sure they can be turned off and on again in the event of an emergency. If you do suffer from a frozen pipe, warm the pipe gently with a hairdryer after opening the tap fed from the pipe. Burst pipes occur when the water expands when frozen so if there is a leak, thawing gently will reveal it sooner allowing you to mend it. Make sure all drainpipes and gutters are clear of leaves, as the leaves will hold the water which will freeze and cause problems. Drain Tidys are great to keep out leaves and debris which are available from a local DIY store. Use Patio Cleaner to keep moss and algae from paths and patios and always have a supply of Rock Salt handy to spread when things get slippery (being mindful this can be dangerous if you have pets or small

inquisitive children). Dark Winter evenings are very popular with burglars and installing outside lights is a very good idea. Motion sensor lights will detect movement and switch themselves on, these can be spots, or lanterns and will also provide a welcome for legitimate visitors. T

he Abarth 124 Spider is cast from the same die as the Fiat 124, and to improve it Abarth has used the same tactic as it did to change the Fiat 500 into the Abarth 595. In other words, it has added lithe looks, noise and, most importantly, muscle. The Abarth 124 Spider uses the same platform as Mazda’s MX-5 and Fiat’s 124. However, while the Fiat has been constructed to be more of a cruising vehicle, the Abarth is more hardcore – and the most performance driven of the three brands. The Abarth uses the same 1.4-litre, four-cylinder turbo-charged petrol engine as Fiat’s 124 - except in the Abarth it produces 170PS, compared with the Fiat 124’s 140PS. The Abarth’s power unit spins with the proper Italian sports car vigour you’d hope for. It feels wayward and entertaining at high revs - and you’re aware of the turbocharger when you push on. The sports car is quick to respond and the gear change is rapid and exact. The best thing about the 124 Spider, though, is the noise it makes. Popping burbles emit from the quad tailpipes when doing the 0-62mph gallop, as I found out

testing the car at Silverstone Circuit, in Northamptonshire. The two-seater Abarth will reach the magical figure in 6.8 seconds, on its way to 143mph. Fold the roof, via a simple fastener, and the Abarth 124’s sound is even more delectable. For an added dose of pleasure, the Abarth 124 has a Sport setting. Hit the button and things become louder, tighter and faster. The throttle feels more insistent, and weight is also added to the steering, making you feel even more united with the road – or race track. The 124 Spider feels most pleased driven hard, with the tail-end hunkered down over the rear wheels. Even when you go too brutally into a bend and lose traction for a jiffy, the Abarth 124 continues to play nicely. Working out what the rump of the car is going to do soon becomes second nature. On the whole, the Abarth 124 Spider is a grin maker, although your beam might falter for a moment when you see the price-tag £29,565. Yes, it’s a large lump of cash, but once you’ve heard the melodious tailpipes, felt the performance and experienced the handling for yourself, you’ll appreciate that this car is worth every single bank note. Do you have a will and is it up to date? You may have a will, but perhaps made many years ago when circumstances were somewhat different. Here are some scenarios in which a review of your will may need to be carried out: “I made my will just before I got married” - wills are revoked on marriage unless they were specifically made in contemplation of that marriage. “We made our wills before the children came along” - in which case, did the will provide for the children and if they are still young, were guardians appointed to cover the position should both parents die?

Is the age at which the children will inherit still appropriate? One or more of the intended beneficiaries or Executors has predeceased - to whom should that benefit now pass and who should manage the administration? One of the grown-up children is involved in a messy divorce or has financial difficulties - is it appropriate

for them to inherit significant wealth at this time? Might a trust provide a better solution? You may have an interest in a business which is significantly more valuable than when the wills were made - is the will drawn in such a way that the business can continue and in the hands of the right people? The tax rules have changed - the introduction of the transferable nil rate band for Inheritance Tax can produce unexpected results in wills that were prepared before these rules came into force. Our advice for those with a will made four or five years ago, or whose circumstances have significantly changed, is to look them out, dust them down and make sure they still do the job you want them to.

If in doubt, please contact our in-house solicitor Graham England by emailing graham.england@duntop.co.uk or calling 01205 310250. If you don’t have a will and would like us to help you write one, please get in touch.
