Welcome
to the March issue Well Winter never really happened, did it? Despite the papers predicting the coldest winter since records began it was so mild that the trees that line my road were blossoming before the end of January. The husband of a friend of mine described it as a “funny old world” as he told me that all of the daffodils in his garden were flowering in January. So much for “Snowmageddon”! Either way Spring is off to a good head start and it will hopefully lead to a nice warm summer. With the weather looking better we start to look ahead and look at Weddings. If this year is your year to get hitched or you have just got engaged we have provided a handy checklist of things which need to be done before the big day. We also share some of our favourite hints and tips. Elsewhere we take a look at where to start when choosing a preschool or nursery. It’s never too early to start thinking about what is most important to you in a nursery and going for a look around – sometimes these decisions are harder on you than your child! Finally we look at the Boston Marathon (the one here, not the famous USA marathon), making its return after 25 years. Enjoy the issue.

Borough council finances Boston Borough Council is set to be the seventh worst hit in the country over the next four years following the draft local government finance settlement 2016/17. With reductions and the eventual withdrawal of all Revenue Support Grant (the main funding from Government) and the likelihood of a further £2 million savings to be found in the next five years £700,000 to find in 2017/18 - there will need to be large-scale transformation of the council in the coming years. The council has already made £2.4 million in savings since 2009, so the scale of the future savings challenges should not be underestimated. Cllr Aaron Spencer, the council’s portfolio holder for finance, said: “Let’s be clear – there is no place to hide. The challenges that lie ahead are unprecedented. Tough decisions will have to be made about the services this council provides going forward. This council can no longer afford to fund all it once could. Residents will see a change to what this council does and how it provides its services. In order to ensure this council can continue to provide the services it is required to do so by law, whilst also supporting the district’s most vulnerable residents and invest in the economy, it must continue to strive to be as efficient as possible in all its work, whilst ensuring it maximises the income it receives.” He said that the Local Government Association’s initial assessment of the scale of the challenge facing councils included the comment that "Even if councils stopped filling in potholes, maintaining parks, closed all children's centres, libraries, museums, leisure centres and turned off every street light they will not have saved enough money to plug the financial black hole they face by 2020”. He added: “We will have some very hard decisions to make and I ask that residents bear in mind what the Government has tasked us with when we have to make those decisions. So far the council has been able to make the savings required of it. It has an ongoing transformation programme but, as time goes on and we become ever
leaner, it becomes more and more difficult to sustain all that we have always done. “The council will achieve a balanced budget for 2016/17. Most significantly we have reduced our senior management structure to what is arguably the smallest in the country and consulted with residents on the introduction of an annual fee for the successful garden waste service. The budget for 2016/17 proposes an increase in council tax of just below two per cent. This will give an average band D council tax increase of 6p per week, with 89 per cent of residents paying less than this. This will be considered first by the Cabinet when it meets on Wednesday, January 27 Cllr Spencer said: “This budget is designed to meet such challenges head-on and ensure that the best possible services are provided to the people of Boston.” Cllr Peter Bedford, leader of Boston Borough Council, said: “There will need to be large-scale transformation in the way the council currently operates in order to achieve this level of savings. The county council has also issued warnings about how future finances will determine levels of service provision with leader Cllr Martin Hill describing forthcoming cuts in finance from central Government as “the deepest we’ve ever faced”. He said the council’s annual spend would have to be cut by at least £130 million over the next four years, on top of the £129 million reduction made since 2011. The county council’s executive councillor for finance, Cllr Marc Jones said over the next 12 months the council’s spending will have to be reduced by £40 million. “The stark truth is that the budgets for almost everything we do will have to be cut to some extent. Some nonessential services will have to be stopped altogether. We may also have to increase council tax much more than we’d like, simply to generate extra income,” he said.
Murder Capital Claims “Tabloid newspaper rubbish” New crime figures from the Home Office recently led to Boston being branded the “murder capital” of the UK by the national press. Cllr Stephen Woodliffe, Boston Borough Council’s portfolio holder for community safety, said: “There are statistics, misinformation and Tabloid newspaper rubbish. According to some newspapers over the weekend, repeated by TV, radio and local newspapers, Boston was the murder capital of England and Wales for the year ending September, 2015. “This conclusion has been arrived at by some thoroughly irresponsible manipulation of Office for National Statistics figures. In reality, Boston has had two murders. Of course, two murders is two too many, but Lincolnshire as a whole had eight, the lowest in the East Midlands region. That’s what the ONS figures say. Greater 4 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON
Manchester had 38, West Yorkshire 27, Nottinghamshire and Northamptonshire both had ten. The City of London had one, but has been placed by some journalists, playing with the figures, as second to Boston: but the actual figures reveal the truth that Boston is one of the safest places to live. Both the City of London and Boston have small resident populations in comparison with the large cities, which distort the figures. So, using irresponsible manipulation of the figures, one murder in a house in a tiny hamlet with a few residents would, proportioning it up to a population of 100,000, immediately catapult it to the top of the list. “The Daily Mail has even produced a map showing Boston to have 7.8 murders per 100,000 residents; but Boston doesn’t have 100,000 residents and hasn’t had 7.8
murders. It is a shameful manipulation of information. “Both I and Lincolnshire Police have agreed that any incidents of violence in Boston are of major concern because such incidents are rare here. Those violent incidents that have occurred have been domestic incidents that have occurred inside homes, and are not random attacks on people in the streets. As has been reported in the local press, every incident has been investigated promptly by the Police and all those involved have either been dealt with by the courts, or are in custody awaiting trial. “If newspaper editors carefully examine the ONS figures for themselves, they will see that Lincolnshire has much less crime than most other areas, and that Boston is a safe place to live and visit.”

Lincolnshire ladies wanted for This Girl Can and Sport Relief campaign Lincolnshire Sport and Sport England’s This Girl Can campaign has teamed up as part of a nationaldrive to raise money for Sport Relief. Sports clubs, groups and organisations across the county are hosting fundraising events throughout March to encourage more women and girls to take part in sport. Janet Inman, Chief Executive Officer at Lincolnshire Sport, said: “Sport England’s This Girl Can campaign is a fantastic way to encourage more women to take part in sport, and we’re huge advocates at Lincolnshire Sport. Since we announced the partnership with Sport Relief last week, we’ve been overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and response we’ve had from the This Girl Can community in Lincolnshire.” Funds raised through Sport Relief will help transform lives across the UK and the world’s poorest communities. The activities in Lincolnshire are part of a national campaign – so women who get sweaty are part of a nationwide effort to do something active and amazing for people in need. Most of the activities in Lincolnshire will take place on Tuesday 8 March – International Women’s Day – or the weekend of Sport Relief, Friday 18 to Sunday 20 March. To help encourage other women to get involved, the This Girl Can team has created an app where you can upload a personal
photo and add one of the special This Girl Can Sport Relief mantras, including: ‘I’m jiggling generously for Sport Relief’, ‘Slow fundraising beats no fundraising’ and ‘I’m donating my red face for Sport Relief’. You can shout about this, and other ways you’re getting involved, by including #ThisGirlCan #SportRelief in all your posts and tweets. Tanya Joseph, This Girl Can campaign director, said: “We’re really thrilled to be joining forces with Lincolnshire Sport and Sport Relief to raise vital funds for people who need help both here and in some of the world’s poorest countries. We know that it can be difficult to find the time and motivation to get out there and be active, so what better way than to do it than helping good causes at the same time. Fundraising is just like exercising; it’s not about how much you raise, or how you do it. What’s important is that you are doing something and having fun. That’s what matters, and it should be celebrated.” Any sports clubs, groups or organisations wanting to get involved with the campaign in Lincolnshire and hold an activity to raise money for Sport Relief, should contact Hayley Cook at Lincolnshire Sport on 01522 730 325 or email communications@ lincolnshiresport.com.
Council Tax Support Scheme Working age residents who need help to pay their council tax will continue to receive it, Boston Borough Council has agreed. Those who are eligible will be able to continue claiming a discount of up to 75 per cent. The council consulted with the public as part of an annual reassessment of the Council Tax Support Scheme. The majority of those who responded to the consultation wanted the scheme beginning in April 1, 2016, to stay as it is – the maximum amount of support remaining at 75 per cent of the annual council tax amount for all households other than pensioners and war widows of all ages, who would continue to qualify for up to 100 per cent. This was agreed by the council on Monday (January 18). The Government abolished council tax benefit in 2013 and the main elements of the council’s scheme have been the same for the past two years – but for 2016/17 it asked for opinion on different options, some reflecting expected cuts in council funding and the increasing challenge of fully-funding council tax support. Some small technical changes to align the scheme with the national position were approved. These include those who are self-employed meeting a minimum income level, a maximum one-month backdate period for working-age claims – in 2014/15 backdated council tax support was more than £100,000, removal of the family premium for new claims from May 1 - this is where £17.10 is disregarded when there are children in the household and tax credit is received. The Government has indicated that this is to be removed for all new claims for housing benefit. Cabinet also recommended abolishing the second adult rebate. This is where a person whose income is too high to qualify for main Council Tax Support may receive a reduction of council tax of up to 25 per cent if other adults in the household are below the income threshold. This costs £11,000 a year. Council Tax Support will remain unchanged for those living in properties in bands A to D inclusive, but for those in properties in bands E to H inclusive the amount of Council Tax Support permitted for working age claimants is to be capped at the level which can be claimed in a band D property.
Boiler Scam A resident has alerted readers to a telephone con after she received a phone call from a company selling replacement central heating boilers. The caller claimed that Boston Borough Council would be enforcing boiler replacements in 2016 and tried to convince the woman that she would be required to change her boiler. The phone was put down on her when she asked for the company’s name and address. There is no such scheme and the council is not and will not be enacting any kind of boiler replacement enforcement across all households. This is a scam but if you are unsure contact the council to confirm on 01205 314200. SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk |

If you would like to contact Peter with a specific question, please email info@simplyboston.co.uk
Each issue Peter Bedford, leader of Boston Borough Council, discusses the important topics in and around Boston I was recently taken to a property in Boston which some had called home. It was a cold, grey, miserable day. It was even colder, greyer and more miserable inside this property. It was, in a word, grim. The good news it won’t stay that way for much longer. This property, with its leaking roof, damp and sub-standard accommodation throughout is now under the wing of Alistair Arundell, of Smartmove Stress Free Lettings Agency, based in Boston, a reputable letting agent who has the agreement of the owner to make improvements. It will be fit for habitation in the 21st century. The privately-rented property came to the council’s notice under the Rogue Landlords Scheme – a project pioneered by the council to improve living conditions. As a result of information received the council inspected the property and served an improvement notice, detailing what work needs to be done. The new letting agent will now undertake that work. The success of this scheme in getting rogue landlords to clean up their act has again been recognised by Government. Despite shrinking finances the Government has awarded the council the full amount it requested to continue dealing with rogue landlords. This is good news and recognition of Boston’s recent successes. Particular thanks go to the council’s housing team who worked on this. The MP, Matt Warman, recognising how important this work is for Boston, also made the
case for us direct to the Minister. We initially had funding for this work from Government two years ago. When that funding was used we thought this to be such important work that we carried it on with council funding. This grant means we can still carry on, and eases the burden on the council tax payer. The council will receive £74,600 – the full bid amount for a 13-week campaign. The main thrust of the council’s rogue landlords initiative has been to investigate cases where accommodation provided has been sub-standard and to prompt landlords into rectifying defects. Successes have seen landlords invest in their properties providing modern, comfortable and sanitary conditions for their tenants. In a few cases the council has shown that, when all else fails, it has been prepared to take rogue landlords to court, especially where, when working with Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue, there have been hazards presenting a risk of injury or even a risk to life. The council also works closely with Lincolnshire Police. In differing ways the rogue landlords scheme has been a success since its inception. Our aim has always been the same, to improve living conditions for all tenants in private rented accommodation and to persuade landlords to do the right thing for their tenants. This is work we are pleased to undertake, but also additional to the routine work of the housing department staff. So this funding is welcome and important in allowing this important work to continue. Cllr Peter Bedford

Callers will need to give the address of the property, a brief account of the issues and, if known, the name of the landlord. They will not need to leave their own details, but it may prove useful for borough council housing officers should any additional information be required. They do not have to give this information, but if they chose to do, it will be kept strictly confidential. There may be occasions when the information is shared with Rogue Landlord partners - the police, Lincolnshire Fire and Rescue and the Gangmasters Licensing Authority.

Advice
Are unscrupulous practices causing local charities to miss out on vital donations? ❱ BY DEBRA LEE Last week we had a call from Maureen , who told us: “Someone has been going from door to door on my street asking for donations to Charity. I don’t have much money and I already donate where I can. They were quite pushy and in the end I gave a donation to make them go away and now I’m concerned they might not be a legitimate charity. What should I do?” With public donations dwindling and ongoing cuts to public spending following the 2008 financial crash, many charities, national and local have experienced drastic cuts to their incomes. Some have chosen to adopt aggressive fundraising techniques to replace income that has dried up. The people of Britain are amongst the most charitable on earth but their continuing generosity depends on their trust in the charities that fundraise. The recent creation of a new regulatory body was recommended in a review of fundraising practice carried out by National Council for Voluntary Organisations. It followed a summer of negative media coverage that highlighted a series of poor fundraising practices. Examples included 92-year-old Olive Cooke who jumped to her death after being hounded by dozens of charities. Olive had been bombarded with direct mail and telephone calls requesting more and more charitable donations. It is suspected that her address and other details were sold on to numerous other organisations. Olive who had been pursued by “cold calling” charities and a constant drip of begging letters had found it difficult to say
“The people of Britain are amongst the most charitable on earth but their continuing generosity depends on their trust in the charities that fundraise.” no. In one month alone she had collected 267 items of post from dozens of different charities asking her for a donation or help with fundraising. With the introduction of fundraising watchdog the government now have powers to regulate big charities that do not safeguard their supporters from high pressure fundraising techniques. The watchdog is aimed at making sure large charities stick to a strict code of good practice, including protecting the identity of donors. Anyone who is inundated with fundraising marketing material from charities will be able to stop receiving this material. All Citizens Advice offices are independent local charities, primarily staffed by volunteers and are responsible for raising their own funds which are spent in the local area. At the heart of the Citizens Advice service in Mid Lincolnshire is the promise to those who need us, to put them first and be guided by their needs. Our simple aim is that everyone in the local area will be able to access free advice to find a way forward. With Local Councils facing some of the deepest cuts in history, it’s even more important that we fundraise to ensure that we
can continue to be here when people need us, but no genuine Citizens Advice volunteer or anyone connected with the Citizens Advice service would ever send begging letters, phone or text someone completely out of the blue. Our local fundraising is carried out via online giving, at public events and by voluntary donations from clients and the public. We have a strict code of confidentiality which means that we would never divulge anyone’s personal details without their explicit consent, so if you’re ever cold called or get a text by someone claiming to be from Citizens Advice about things such as donations, loan offers, help with debt problems or accident claims – it is almost certainly a scam. Our advice to Maureen? “ Don’t agree to make a donation on the spot, especially if you can’t afford to do so or if you are unsure or have any reason to doubt .Legitimate collectors should be happy for you to take their details and say you need more time to make a decision. As with all cold callers and doorstep sales don’t agree to or sign anything without first telling someone you trust. Having this conversation with a family member, friend, good neighbour or contacting your local Citizens Advice for help could stop you from losing money. If you are concerned about a phone call, letter or cold caller , think you may have been caught out , or if you are concerned for a relative or neighbour, call the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on our helpline on 03454 04 05 06. If you’ve fallen for a scam, report it to the Police .You can also report it to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.”

The 16 drop-in sessions held across the area were attended by over 1,000 people and we received plenty of helpful feedback as a result. n This included concerns about the ability of existing community and physical infrastructure to cope with new development. n Questions were also raised over whether the large number of houses proposed is justified. n There is support, in principle, for the delivery of a Boston Distributor Road. n New sites have been submitted for us to consider for housing in various settlements. n Further work is planned to help address these important issues.
The public consultation on the draft Local Plan has now finished and we would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who gave their views.
What happens next? n All of the comments received will be taken to the South East Lincolnshire Joint Strategic Planning Committee in April 2016 so that the key themes and issues raised through the consultation can be discussed by Councillors. n Changes will be made where appropriate to the Local Plan. n A six week public consultation will then be held on the Publication Draft of the Local Plan later this year where we will be inviting comments on whether the Local Plan is ‘sound’ and ‘legally compliant’. n The Local Plan will be submitted to the Planning Inspectorate for Examination by the end of the year with adoption scheduled for early 2017. To keep up-to-date with the progress of the Local Plan please visit our dedicated website: www.southeastlincslocalplan.org SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk |

Adult choice Man Up DVD My boyfriend rolled his eyes when I brought home a romcom for our evening’s entertainment but a quote on the DVD cover said ‘the best British rom-com in years’. It was a bold claim to make but we found ourselves chuckling at key moments throughout the film, especially as we, like the characters, had met on a blind date. Unlucky-in-love Nancy accidentally meets recently-divorced Jack under the clock at Waterloo station, who believes her to be his blind date. It’s not a Richard Curtis –style rollercoaster of emotion but my boyfriend and I preferred this witty film to the unrealistic schmaltz other rom-coms can offer. New DVD releases are charged at £2 for two nights. Older titles are priced at £1 for one week.
Junior choice I know an Old Lady who Swallowed a Fly by Colin and Jacqui Hawkins This traditional tale in the form of a lift-the-flap book will be a favourite with children of all ages. The amusing illustrations and comic expressions of the creatures swallowed by the old lady are sure to delight.

Fishtoft Academy Out of This World... Fabulous Phoenix 500 Strikes Again! A giant egg mysteriously appeared in the playground last year and sparked all sorts of controversy- along with sparking some amazing writing. Surely, nothing untoward could happen this year? Could it? Well… yes! Surprisingly, Fishtoft Academy has experienced most unusual and unexplainable happenings once more. Again, the playground seems to be where strange phenomena’s begin. This year, unbeknown to anyone, an object in the form of a space craft came to rest in a corner of the playground. It appeared to have crash landed and was oozing some strange- coloured slime. How it got there, why Fishtoft again- nobody could explain. After the area had been
certified as safe by an Alientologist from the Alien Investigation Team, children were able to go outside and see the space ship for themselves. It was certainly strange and once the buzz of excitement settled, intrigue took over. There were questions and theories galore- yet no answers. Research into theories took place in classrooms and when outside, children kept a very close eye on the craft- checking for possible life on board. Some children say they saw a little green hand emerge from behind the space ship. Others heard peculiar noises. After a while, a further discovery was made. Three large boxes containing books had been left for each class and then came a visit from Agent Keeler who was an expert in reading
alien text. He was able to decode a letter which had been left and explained that boxes of books would be left at school. In return, the children needed to write some new stories, which the aliens could take back home with them. They loved their books but needed new stories to keep them entertained. All the children rose to the challenge. They were very keen to keep the new books and were more than happy to create alien masterpieces which could be taken away. Fishtoft staff were incredibly proud of the writing produced by all of the children and on December 8th, the Phoenix 500 2015 award ceremony was held at Blackfriars. The night was a celebration of the writing achievements of children from each school in the trust.
Bicker Preparatory School
On Tuesday 19thJanuary the ‘Happy Egg’ bus visited Bicker Preparatory School. Every class visited the bus during the day to take part in ‘hands on’ science and maths activities. The children enjoyed looking at different sizes of eggs and learnt about their structure as well as learning about irreversible changes such as when eggs are whisked with air to make meringue. Head Teacher Mrs Julie Miles said ‘The children really enjoyed working in a different learning environment. The staff provided some excellent activities for every age group.’ SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk |

Boston Marathon
Boston Marathon The day before the world-famous Boston Marathon in Massachusetts, there is another Boston Marathon being run in the original Boston in Lincolnshire
T
he Boston (UK) Marathon is back after 25 years and has already attracted much interest from runners. Starting at 9am on Sunday April 17th there are one thousand places for marathon and half marathon runners. There will also be 50 spots for relay teams (with up to 5 runners in a team) so if you don’t think you could quite make a whole or half marathon there is still room for you to enter! The route can be seen on the website, www. bostonmarathon.co.uk and will be run on the roads. Being in Lincolnshire the course is completely flat, which should help with your times!! The Marathon begins at Boston Market place and ends at Boston College. There will be 9 drinks stations along the route as well as toilet facilities every couple of miles. Unusually, there will also be free physio advice at the finishing point – handy if you are relatively new to running or if you notice anything throughout the course which might need your attention at the end. Boston College is also providing car parking, changing facilities and bag storage for all runners. Even though it is not a County Council event, the Marathon is being supported by Big Local Boston with a £8000 sponsorship. Boston Big Local is one of 150 areas that have been awarded £1million to make a lasting and positive difference to their local community as part of a ten year programme, managed by Local Trust aiming to make a big difference to the local area and bring longlasting change to the lives of those people living and working there. There are cash prizes for the Full and Half Marathon (separate prizes for men and women) and one set of prizes for the Relay. First prize takes £250, second £150 and £100 for third. There are no charity restrictions

Choosing a nursery
Choosing the right nursery for your child If you choose to take your child to nursery or pre-school, how do you go about making the decision about where to send them? Everyone has different criteria, so where do you start?
F
or many people, the first thing they do when considering nurseries is to ask the people around them – gaining a personal recommendation can be invaluable to some parents but be careful that the person doing the recommending has the same goals as you. For some parents the educational aspects are the most important thing when choosing a nursery, for others it might be that their child’s creativity is given centre-stage, and others may feel that a fast paced, busy environment suits their child best. The great thing is that you know your child best of all so are best placed to decide which nursery will suit them best. By all means begin by taking a look at recent Ofsted reports but nothing comes close to actually paying a visit. A quick call to the nursery will tell you not only if they have space but get a time booked in to visit. When you visit make sure you take your child! You will be able to tell how well they get on while you are there and if they are likely to enjoy it there. Make sure you are looking and listening very carefully when you are there – starting from the outside! What does the nursery building look like? Is it secure? Does the outdoor play equipment look of good quality and well cared for? It might surprise you how much you actually pick up on before you have even gone through the door.
❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN When you get inside look at the facilities – how to the toys and play areas look? Is there a kitchen onsite and if so are all the meals prepared there? Do they use fresh produce or frozen? What are the menus like? Ask about a typical day to find out what your child will be doing. Find out also about how much time they will get to spend outside. Ask about how many of the staff are qualified – there are national guidelines on this but some nurseries will go over and above. Look at the leadership team (often the nursery manager and senior staff) and decide if they look like a strong team. Strong teams will ensure the smooth running of a nursery which can only be of benefit to the children within them. Perhaps most importantly of all, look at the children. Do they look happy, engaged and well stimulated? Are they listening well to the staff? What sort of activities are they taking part in? Look at the variety on offer to them and it should start to show you if it would fit in with your child. Come away and ask your child what they thought – did they enjoy it? Would they like to go back? If you had a good feel for the place and your child seemed to enjoy it then a taster session should follow next. Just remember that at any point you can change your mind – going with your gut feel is often a valuable experience!
“Perhaps most importantly of all, look at the children. Do they look happy, engaged and well stimulated?”
“When you visit make sure you take your child! You will be able to tell how well they get on while you are there and if they are likely to enjoy it there.”

ROLLA
Photography Documentary to Focus on Boston United Documenting The Pilgrims
W
ith the 2018 football World Cup three years away, and with FIFA announcing that the Brazil World Cup generating a profit of £2.6 billion, photographer ROLLA will investigate the opposite end of the financial scale within the football industry. So who is ROLLA? ROLLA is an award winning Fine Art Photographer who began her documentary work during her time in the Royal Air Force. She has had her work featured in international publications and has won recognition awards in international photographic festivals. Alongside her professional practice she is also a photography lecturer. What will she be during her time with the club? The Grassroots project will document the people connected with Boston United over a two year period. By capturing all aspects of the club this documentary will look to explore the struggles and triumphs of a National League North team and prove that
when it comes to football, passion and pride is more important than profit. Already one month into the project, photographer ROLLA already has some understanding of just how important the club is to the people of Boston: “I am delighted that Boston United came on board with this project. I attended one of their matches as part of my research into this project and I knew instantly this was the club I wanted to focus on. The club has a unique quality that I want to capture. The supporters are real characters and the club itself has close and positive links with the local community. The club has had its fair share of turmoil, but to me it remains resilient. The passion the supporters have is quite something. If I manage to capture that then I would consider this project a massive success”. Once the assignment has been completed the Grassroots project will look to exhibit nationally and become a published body of work.

Healthy Lifestyle
Health trainers out and about in Boston Lincolnshire Community and Voluntary Service (LCVS) health trainers are getting out and about in Boston to spread healthy eating and lifestyle tips
A
“Things like good portion control can make a massive difference, having an awareness of alcohol volumes and being aware and cautious of the sugar content in certain drinks and foods.”
s well occasionally heading out into the town for events, a health trainer is to begin regularly attending Boston Body Hub, in Wide Bargate, 10am to midday, on the first Monday of every month. Jan Gould-Martin, senior LCVs health and social care officer, said: “There are loads of little things people can do to improve their health and lots of things that can stand in the way of them achieving their goals if they don’t know about them. “Things like good portion control can make a massive difference, having an awareness of alcohol volumes and being aware and cautious of the sugar content in certain drinks and foods." Jenny Elwick, Network Development Officer for Boston and Sleaford for Lincolnshire Chamber of Commerce, said: “'Boston Town Team has a planned programme of events for 2016, not only celebrating the amazing local produce we have on our doorstep but also promoting and encouraging healthy food choices and lifestyle”. The LCVS health trainer service is a free, informal, confidential advice and support service available to anyone aged 16 or over. Health trainers work one to one with clients for six to eight sessions to identify and address habits holding them back from living a healthy lifestyle. That can include helping clients to scrutinise and change their eating habits, get on the path to giving up smoking, increasing their activity and much more. Health trainers can not only suggest ways to improve things but support clients to implement the ideas through things like healthy cooking lessons or identifying a suitable local exercise class and even attending the first one with the client if desired. LCVS health trainers are based at the Len Medlock voluntary Centre, St George’s Road, Boston (near the bus station). Contact them on 01205 510888 or email: health@ lincolnshirecvs.org.uk
TOP TIPS FROM LCVS HEALTH TRAINERS: Know how many units of alcohol you are consuming: One unit is roughly: One small (275ml) bottle of lower strength (4 per cent) alcopop; a half pint of lower strength (4 per cent) lager, beer or cider; a single pub measure of spirit (40 per cent). Three units is: One pint of medium strength (five per cent) lager, beer or cider; a large glass 250 ml) of low strength (12 per cent) wine; a large bottle of lower strength (four per cent) alcopop. It is advised not to drink more than 14 units per week – much less if you are having other sugary and fatty treats. Get your portion control right: Aim for about one third of everything you eat to be fruit and vegetables, one third to be bread, rice, potatoes, pasta and other starchy foods and the other third to be split between milky and dairy and non-dairy proteins such as meat, fish and beans. It’s ok to have a small amount of sugary and fatty food such as cake or chocolate – be realistic. Per day aim for: Around five portions of fruit or vegetables – one portion is three heaped tea spoons of root vegetables, a handful of grapes, one apple, a whole corn on the cob Seven or eight portions of bread, rice, pasta or starchy food – a portion is 50 to 75g of pasta or rice, one slice of bread, one potato the size of a lightbulb Three portions of dairy – one portion is a matchbox sized piece of cheese, a 200ml glass of milk, a 200g pot of yoghurt Two to three portions of protein – three fish fingers, two eggs, a piece of cooked lean meat the size of a pack of playing cards You can have 100 kcl to 200 kcl of fat or sugar – a chocolate bar (around 240 kcl), two plain biscuits (around 100 kcl), one small bag of crisps (around 150 kcl) Drinks – water is best, avoid fizzy drinks, you can include tea and coffee but make sure it isn’t your only source of fluid, alcoholic drinks should count as part of the foods high in fats and sugar Make smart swaps Swap an ordinary fizzy drink for sugar free Swap whole milk for semi skimmed Swap sugary cereal for plain

Kitchens
Making your kitchen truly yours Once you have chosen your kitchen, what are the things you can do to add that personal touch?
C
hoosing the right kitchen for you can take time. For starters there is a huge amount of choice out there. From the type of kitchen (traditional, contemporary, rustic, the list goes on) to deciding on layouts, many people now use the help of Computer Aided Design (CAD) drawings to best visualise what the end result will look like. Working together with your kitchen supplier and installer will ensure that your kitchen will be as functional and versatile as you imagined. With more choice than ever it is important to think about the function of your kitchen – what do you use it for the most – just cooking or entertaining too? Is space an issue for you – will you need to look into clever spacesaving ideas and appliances? What changes and advances have been made since your last kitchen was installed – what would you like to do differently? When you start along these lines you will often find that more questions will be thrown up than answers but it will lead you to a thoroughly researched decision. Most kitchen suppliers or fitters will offer a full measuring service and will then be able to advise on the best layouts and materials based on the information you give them. They will also be able to tell you what will work based on your budget and the most effective way to spend the money you are putting to it. Once the kitchen has been decided on you can turn your attention to putting the finishing touches to it, starting with appliances. Once again this will be decided based on how you use your kitchen – if you don’t cook that often or there are only a couple of you in the house it may be that buying a huge range cooker isn’t the right decision for you. Also if you are a large family then a small, built-in refrigerator will not suit your needs. If you are style conscious then your kitchen is a great place to express yourself. Contemporary hobs and extractors can bring a stylish aspect to your kitchen and the trend for large

“...the trend for large American-style fridge-freezers can also add a modern flair.”
American-style fridge-freezers can also add a modern flair. Your walls are also a good way to personalise your kitchen. You can choose to tile from floor to ceiling, or paint or even paper and everything in between. There is a wide selection of tiles to choose from in all shapes, sizes and colours. You can even choose the colour of your grout for a different look. Many tile places offer a tile loan service whereby you can take a tile home and look at how it will look on the wall. It’s a good way of deciding if a certain look will work. While you look at walls take a look at the windows as well and have a think about blinds. Most types of blinds work really well in kitchens and are a good way of introducing a secondary colour or pattern. It is always a good idea to get your windows professionally measured to ensure that your blinds are the right size. As well as looking at your kitchen design look up! What are your lights like? Will they be in keeping with your new kitchen? Putting in new lights at the same time as your kitchen is being installed will save you time and trouble afterwards! If you are having any lights in the kitchen units themselves then speak to your installers about using their electrician. Finally it is worth planning what you are going to do while the installation is taking place – where are you going to prepare food and where are you going to eat? Suddenly being without a kitchen, even for a short amount of time can quickly become a problem. Check with your installers how long they are going to take and plan accordingly – safe in the knowledge that soon you will be cooking in your new, personalised kitchen.

s a far as Jags go, this isn’t the fastest or the biggest – but it is a looker and it makes a change to the similarlysized, and rather ubiquitous, BMW 3 Series. The Jaguar XE comes brimming with technology, ultra-efficient engines and sharp-suited aesthetics. Its smooth body hides a construction that’s 75 per cent aluminium - a material not only sturdier than the steel used by its rivals, but also lighter. Handling is first-class, too. That lightweight physique comes into its own here. Even if you pick the Comfort suspension setup (you can also choose from Sport and Adaptive), the XE feels quick to respond. Inside, you’ll find the InControl infotainment system. This brings the XE level with its challengers, like BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz and Lexus, straight from the off. You can even fine-tune the climatecontrol, play around with the door locks and start the engine with your smart phone! A sporty drive is key to any Jaguar and that energetic feel starts from the driver’s seat. Like most models that went before it, the XE cossets you, thanks to a raised transmission tunnel and high window line. Another keystone of the Jaguar experience, a sense of sumptuousness, comes in the form of costly materials covering most of the cabin – leather upholstery is in all but the rudimentary model. To call the XE spacious is stretching the truth but, as alluded to earlier, it’s comparable with the room you would find in its BMW 3 Series opponent. In the real world, that means there’s plenty of capacity for adults up front, but not so much in the rear. There, legroom equals what you get in the German foe, but the low roofline and seemingly tighter interior
26 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON
impacts on upper body comfort. The Jaguar also offers largely the same interior storage space as you would expect from any of its adversaries. There are pockets in all doors, a pair of cup-holders in the front and a cubby that doubles up as a front-centre armrest. And with 455-litres of boot space you’ll easily get your golf bags in! Like most modern motors, the XE comes with a full set of active and passive safety technologies to keep you out of harm’s way. Complementing the standard traction and stability control is the innovative All Surface Progress Control – a system that instinctively moves the car off from a standstill in greasy conditions to thwart wheel spin. On a long commute, the XE is more comfortable than the BMW 3 Series. Indeed, however you choose to spec your Jaguar, it feels clued-in and up to the challenge. Out on the motorway, the car is hushed. In fact, it’s so quiet, engine noise is almost non-existent. You can choose between an eight-speed auto ‘box or a six-speed manual gearbox. I drove the 2.0 i4 180PS model, fitted with the latter do-it-yourself cogchanger. The gears feel perfectly harmonised with the engine’s power band and the sharp-witted nature of the XE. The turbocharged diesel – fitted with a 178bhp four-cylinder 1999cc power-unit - feels effortless and refined in its operation. It shifts from 0-62mph in 7.4 seconds and tops out at 140mph, returning around 67mpg. After a few hundred miles in the saddle, it’s very clear that Jaguar has accomplished an amazing balance between ride comfort and handling prowess. Where the BMW 3 Series sits on the dynamics side of the fence and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class prefers luxury, the XE achieves both.
