Welcome

to the November issue With Halloween and Bonfire Night out of the way the countdown to Christmas can well and truly begin! This issue we take a look at the children’s toys which have the potential to become the “must have” toys this Christmas. In the article we also look back at the toys that every child wanted in days gone by. It’s fun to compare them – do you think children today would go mad for a teddy bear in the way they did in 1910? And I’m not talking all-singing, all-dancing electronic bears. I’m talking a does-nothingbut-look-cute teddy bear. That said, who knew that a craze involving rubber bands tied together as bracelets would sweep the nation? Watch this space…. Elsewhere in the issue we are interested in heat – both insulating your home and making sure you stay warm this winter. There are lots of hints and tips so make sure you have a good read. We also explore options for those who are looking to start sixth form next September. It seems like such a long time away but will be here before we know it and it’s never too early to start thinking about your future. Finally, many thanks to Katrina Justovica for this month’s cover image. Enjoy the issue.

Boston College shortlisted for Beacon Award Great news came in for Boston College last week when their shortlisting for a Beacon Award was announced, recognising outstanding leadership and improvement. The Beacon Awards recognise excellence and Boston College has been shortlisted for an award in the category of ‘Association of Colleges Award for Outstanding Leadership of Improvement’. The focus within this category is on effective leadership and management of organisational change, on creating a studentfocused culture and on improving teaching and learning to produce positive results that have a significant impact on students. This award is open to all further education, sixth form and tertiary

colleges in the UK, making being shortlisted an incredible achievement in itself. The college has provided evidence of its ‘Be Brilliant’ strategy to demonstrate the positive impact on students. Assessors will be visiting Boston College on Tuesday 22nd September and will be looking at visionary and ambitious leadership and management in action. On being shortlisted for this award, college principal Amanda Mosek said “I am delighted that Boston College’s high standards and continuing success has been nationally recognised. The College really is a great place to study and all staff work incredibly hard to fulfil our mission, which is to transform the lives of individuals.”

Boston in Bloom gold award It’s official Boston is bloomin’ golden. In just four years Boston has gone from first entry to a gold - the highest standard – in the annual in-bloom awards. There was also a gold judge’s award for the gardens and volunteers at Fydell House. Judge Jeff Bates said: “The efforts of the volunteers are playing an everincreasing role”. When Boston first entered three years ago, it received a silver East Midlands in Bloom award, followed by a silver in 2013, just one point short of a silver gilt which it received last year. Now the town has hit top spot and, receiving the gold award, Cllr Claire Rylott, Boston Borough Council’s portfolio holder for grounds and open spaces, and Alison Fairman, chairman of Boston in Bloom, praised the huge community volunteer effort. Cllr Rylott, said: “Thank you to everyone who has been involved in Boston in Bloom. “I have been overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and time given by many people, many being volunteers, working tirelessly to help to make Boston a greener and tidier market town to work in, live in and visit.

TJ Gymnastics Academy Results Recently, TJ Gymnastics Academy hosted an artistic competition for girls and boys ranging in age from 4 years old to 16 years old. TJ Gymnastics Academy based at the PRSA in Boston offered the chance for local clubs to join them and the response was amazing with 102 budding gymnasts agreeing to take part. For many of the girls and boys this was the first time that they had taken part in a competition so rightly so nerves were always going to be a factor. The clubs that joined TJ’s on the day were Spalding Gymnastics Club, Sleaford Gymnastics Club and Apex. The competition was split into various groups called Sunshine, Lollipop, Ice Cream, Daisy and Sandcastle. Then the groups were split down further into age groups. Within each section the gymnasts competed on Vault, Trampette, Tumble, Beam

4 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON

and finally Range and medals were awarded for each piece within each age group in every group. TJ’s had several stalls on the day including food, drinks, games and a raffle. They were also joined by Little Star Leotards, who sold a fantastic range of leotards and accessories. DE Photos also joined in the fun taking an amazing array of action shots and podium poses that could be purchased during the competition and also online after the event had finished. The competition was keenly contested throughout a fun filled day and in true gymnastics spirit every child was supportive of each other. In total over the 5 levels 250 medals were awarded and 5 giant lollipops were handed out to the overall winner of each level. The overall winners were of each group

were Lucy Rudd from Spalding (Sunshine) Darcy Orford from Spalding (Lollipop) Liberty Foden from Spalding (Daisy) Hannah Rushen from Sleaford (Ice Cream) and Lillie Manning from TJ Gymnastics Academy (Sandcastle). TJ Gymnastics Academy artistic head Rudi Wall was quoted as saying “I am so incredibly proud of the efforts of all my gymnasts, for many of them it was their first competition and they excelled themselves. We as a club managed a medal haul of over 100 medals and special awards for an outstanding performance on a piece of apparatus. We also managed to raise over £600 towards new equipment for the children so that is a massive plus. I would like to personally thank the coaches of the other clubs who took part and made such a fantastic day a possibility. I would also like to thank the parents and relatives of all the gymnasts who took part and helped make the atmosphere so good.” TJ Gymnastics Academy founder Tony Hockley was blown away by the support given by the clubs parents who all pulled together to help get the gym ready for the competition and also after a long day stayed behind to tidy up and get the Academy ready for training on the Monday. He also said “The support we received from parents was outstanding who did everything from baking cakes to hoovering but we also had the backing of local businesses The Rose Of Bengal, Tulip ltd, Bakkavor, Pots Of Fun and Woodco and this was so helpful as their support was invaluable.”

Illuminate The Pilgrim Fathers’ Mayflower will set sail again... as part of this year’s Christmas lights switch-on event in Boston. A giant three-part model of the Mayflower – the ship which took the early settlers from England to America – will parade through the streets of Boston on the night of Thursday, November 26, as part of ‘Illuminate’ - a lantern procession, accompanied by music. This year’s event will build on the modest, but successful, lights switch-on event held last Christmas, organised by the council after Boston BID had been dissolved. It will again include free entertainment in the Market Place and a Christmas market. Illuminate will also be the launch pad for events culminating in 2020 for the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower’s world-changing voyage to the New World. Illuminate is being organised in partnership with Transported, the Boston and South Holland arts organisation funded by Arts Council England to increase participation in the arts. Boston’s part in the events which made history will be included in a celebration involving towns and cities in England, Holland and America. The very earliest group of Separatists, as they were known, planned to leave England for Holland without the permission of the King, which was then a requirement. They were seeking freedom from persecution because of their religious leanings, and planned to sail across the North Sea from Scotia Creek, near Fishtoft. But they were betrayed and the “pilgrims” – men, women and children from Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire, were arrested by the militia and marched to Boston where some were imprisoned in the Guildhall cells and others kept there under house arrest. Eventually they did make their way to Holland, returned to England and then sailed for America in the Mayflower. The rest is history – the history of the development of what was to become the most powerful nation on earth. A stage will be put up near the Christmas tree, facing into the event area in the Market Place for song and dance entertainment from 5pm to 8pm. The Christmas market will be similar to last year’s and include refreshments. There will also be fairground rides and, of course, Santa this year in a grotto. The highlight will be the twin lantern processions which will converge in the Market Place. During the arrival of the

NEWS

procession the town Christmas lights will come on, followed later by those in Pescod Square where more festive events will take place. Over the coming weeks residents will be able to be involved in construction of the models in Illuminate workshops run by artists Julie Willoughby and Ruth Pigott. Keep an eye on the Boston Bulletin and the Transported website for further details (www.transportedart.com). The second annual Christmas shop window competition will also be held in the run up to the switch-on event. Details will be hand delivered to shops in the coming weeks. BTAC (Boston Town Area Committee) has agreed to make a £2,500 contribution to the Christmas lights switch-on event. Cllr Paul Skinner, Boston Borough Council’s portfolio holder for the town centre, said: “We are thinking way in advance so we can be in the best position possible for Christmas and New Year 2016/17. We want to start discussions at the earliest opportunity with anyone and everyone who can help support us in future Christmas lights provision for Boston. “It is virtually unthinkable for Boston town centre not to be covered by Christmas lights. It is a commercial time of year for most town centre shops and businesses and we want to be sure the town appears welcoming and inviting.” “I am pleased that BTAC has already shown support for this. I hope that others, such as town centre traders, businesses, partners, agencies and community groups will also show support.” Arrangements are now being made for a meeting with business representatives and Boston’s Town Team to discuss the future of the lights. Anyone interested in receiving more information about how they might help should call on 01205 314401 or email elaine.henton@boston. gov.uk or luisa.stanny@boston.gov.uk Cllr Paul Skinner said provision of Christmas lights was not a statutory duty and said the council was facing difficult decisions about which services it continues to support and maintain. He said now was the time for the council, businesses and the retail community to think about how the town could best secure festive lighting for 2016 and beyond at a cost each year of between £25,000 and £30,000. Including this coming Christmas, businesses in town have made a contribution towards the lights - £20,000 over the five years - through the now defunct Boston BID.

Trevor finds a new sense of purpose through volunteering Having been out of work through sickness for many years Trevor Turner, 52, began job seeking again recently. He made an appointment with an LCVS volunteering officer at Boston Job Centre and found out about the London Road community shed. The shed is full of gardening and litter picking equipment for use to clean up community areas. Trevor now spends three days a week tackling grot spots in and around London Road. He said: “I am really enjoying it. I just like making the place nice and tidy.” Trevor has already tamed the overgrown area around the shed and tackled a patch of land close to the petrol station opposite. Jody Raggo is secretary of the newly merged High Street South and Boston East Neighbourhood Action Group, which manages the shed, as well as an LCVS volunteering officer. He said: “You can already see the difference Trevor has made. It’s just amazing what a

couple of days volunteering can do for an area.” The shed came into operation earlier this year. Mr Raggo said: “We have all the equipment in place and have a few committed volunteers including Trevor. We just need a few more like them to get on board.” Married father-of-three Trevor has been taking it upon himself to keep the area around his home in Peck Avenue, Boston, free of litter for some time. Now he is involved with the community shed he is properly equipped with litter picker and gloves. He goes out about once a week and collects up to two bags of litter from the surrounding area. LCVS volunteering officers have access to details of hundreds of volunteering opportunities in the local area. They have the time and enthusiasm to match individuals to their ideal roles whether they have one hour to spare every now and again or a number of days per week. There are roles in

caring, administration, working with animals, technology, DIY, the list is endless. Contact Boston LCVS Volunteer Centre to find out more on 01205 365588 or email vb@ lincolnshirecvs.org.uk

If you would like to contact Peter with a specific question, please email info@simplyboston.co.uk

Each issue Peter Bedford, leader of Boston Borough Council, discusses the important topics in and around Boston Many people contact me to ask questions about the council’s responsibilities. There must be many more who want answers. So I am making good on an undertaking I gave early in the life of this council for residents of the borough to ask any questions of the portfolio holders face-to-face. This will be a regular opportunity for members of the public to ask a question of the most senior councillors who form the executive, or Cabinet. The first chance for people to put their points to them personally was on Monday, October 19, when the first Cabinet question-and-answer session was held. The next will be at 6pm on Monday, January 25. This open-house session ensures that, as far as is possible, anyone has an opportunity to raise an issue. We will hold the question-and-answer sessions at intervals – possibly quarterly – as part of our policy of demonstrating openness, transparency and access. The new council has settled to its tasks and new councillors appointed to important portfolio roles are now familiar with their responsibilities, so now seemed the right time to hold the first questionand-answer evening. In order that portfolio holders can present the most comprehensive answers, by having all pertinent information available, those wishing to ask a question are asked to firstly submit them in writing, and then be prepared to attend the session in person to ask their question and receive the answer. It will not be a requirement for questions to be submitted in writing in advance, but it will make for more satisfactory answers. Questions must be relevant to the council’s duties and responsibilities or issues that affect the borough. Councillors will not be permitted to ask questions of the Cabinet as there are other existing mechanisms for them to use. These sessions are exclusively for members of the public resident in Boston borough.

Questions should be sent by email to askthecabinet@boston.gov.uk or by post to Lorraine Bush, Democratic Services Manager, Boston Borough Council, West Street, Boston, Lincolnshire, PE21 8QR, or they can be hand delivered to the council offices. All questions should be given the subject “Ask The Cabinet”. One of the best aspects of my review of each month is being able to report good news from Boston, and the ways in which the town continues to attract new businesses and investment from existing businesses. To me this says volumes about the confidence displayed in the town by people prepared to risk their own futures with us. Boston has just won its first Britainin-Bloom gold award, so we must be doing something right. Two of the town’s long-standing businesses have done their homework and are investing substantially in their businesses. The White Hart is developing a new bar and cafe area and the exterior of Oldrids Downtown stores is having a facelift. I wish them both continuing prosperity. They help put Boston on the map. It is, of course, wonderful to have new businesses opening, expanding and relocating to our area as in the case of farm equipment manufacturers Fliegl, Pep & Co, Pandora and B&M, for instance. But it is especially gratifying to hear that existing businesses, familiar with the area, their clientele and the potential for growth, are investing large sums. They do not do this without a sound business plan and confidence in Boston. Lidl has permission to open a new store in Boston and that is progressing and Leggates, one of our most established farmers, is to build a new packhouse at Wrangle, creating local employment. Other applications are in the wind, so their merits have yet to be determined by the planning committee. Screwfix wants to open in Norfolk Street, and Marston’s want to open a new pub on land off Swineshead Road. Cllr Peter Bedford

Advice

Are you being affected by Dementia? There are around 800,000 people in the UK with dementia (Department of Health 2013). However there are many more that have not been diagnosed and are living with the condition without support. In Lincolnshire alone, it is estimated that 10,502 people are currently living with dementia, 62% of those without a formal diagnosis ❱ BY STUART HELLON Dementia doesn’t only affect those with the condition, but also has an impact of family members and carers. Caring for someone with dementia can be physically and emotionally exhausting, putting pressure of relationships as well as finances. However many continue to struggle as they don’t realise that there may be extra help available to them. Citizens Advice Boston and Citizens Advice Sleaford have begun working in partnership on a new project funded by the Dementia Support Network (DSN). The project focuses on supporting people and families dealing with dementia. The DSN project went live on 1st August 2015 and aims to improve client access to advice services and to ensure that people are better equipped to deal with financial matters associated with dementia. The Citizens Advice advisers are highly trained in a variety of areas including debt, benefits, housing, relationships, tax and employment. Clients have already accessed the project regarding a variety of issues. Many clients have been very concerned about not being able to care for their partner any longer. They are therefore worried about the implications of the partner moving into a care home. One of our clients visited the bureau as she had been struggling to care for her husband after he was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease two years ago. The client was of poor health herself and felt unable to care for her husband any longer. She felt that her only option was to consider moving her husband into a care home. She didn’t know where to go for help or even where to start. A community nurse suggested that she contact Citizens Advice for help. We were able to provide our client with

other options that were available to her including access to care and support services. She also received advice relating to care home fees and the financial implications of moving her husband into a care home and how this may impact upon her benefit entitlement. Other frequently asked questions include: I have been diagnosed with Dementia. What financial help is available to me? If you are sick or disabled, there are a number of different benefits and tax credits you may be able to claim. • If you are aged 16-64 and you have a long-term health condition or disability that affects your ability to live independently, you may be able to claim Personal Independence Payment. • If you are 65 or over and you have care needs, you may be able to claim Attendance Allowance. • If you are unable to work, you may be able to claim Statutory Sick Pay or Employment and Support Allowance • If you care for someone who is disabled, you may be able to claim Carer’s Allowance. You may be able to get other benefits as well depending on your circumstances. For example you may be able to get benefits for being on a low income like Housing Benefit or benefits because you have children. You may also be able to claim Council Tax Reduction to help with your council tax. Will my benefits be affected if I go into a care home? Personal Independence Payment: The daily living component is not normally payable whilst you are a resident of a care home in which any of the costs of your

accommodation, board, personal care or other services are met out of the public or local funds. However the mobility component is not usually affected by a stay in a care home. Attendance Allowance: Can only be paid to a resident in a care home for up to a maximum of 28 days if any of the costs of accommodation or personal care are paid for out of public funds. Who is responsible for paying care home fees? Once the local authority has assessed a person as needing a care home place, s/he will be given a place in an independent home or in a local authority managed home. The local authority will then assess the client’s income and capital to see whether s/ he will have to pay towards the fees of the home, or whether some or all costs will be met by the local authority itself. Will I have to sell my home to pay for a care home for my partner? If you own a property with your partner and they go into a care home, the value of your property must be disregarded as capital when the local authority is assessing your income/ capital. However this only applies if there has been no divorce, estrangement or dissolution. If there has been a divorce, estrangement or dissolution, the property will only be disregarded if you are a lone parent. Queries surrounding dementia and the impact that it can have on you and your loved ones can be complex and daunting; however help is available. To speak a member of the DSN project, please contact us on 07922625161 or email enquiries@bostoncab. org.uk and we can arrange a free and confidential appointment for you to see one of our advisers.

Borough coastline to be part of new national trail

N

Boston borough’s coastline is being mapped out as part of a new national footpath. The walking route will give people right of access around all of England’s open coast for the first time

atural England is working closely with Lincolnshire County Council on the proposals, and will be beginning to hold detailed meetings with relevant parties regarding the alignment of the stretches between Sutton Bridge and Skegness Pier and Skegness Pier and Mablethorpe, to make sure the route is the most appropriate one for residents, landowners and visitors. Once these sections of the path are completed, which is expected to happen in 2018, the county council will be responsible for this element of the route, which will be granted National Trail status. The remaining section within Lincolnshire, from Mablethorpe to the Humber Bridge, will be worked on subsequently, with a provisional opening date of 2019. Cllr Claire Rylott, Boston Borough Council’s portfolio holder for leisure and

open spaces, said: “This will give increased access to the wide open spaces we have along the borough coastline. Places such as RSPB Frampton Marsh and RSPB Freiston Shore already attracts locals and visitors. Some areas of the sea bank and wider marsh also offer opportunities to enjoy the countryside and fresh air. This new project will join these up and give more people easier access to the coastline – whether they want to walk long distances or just visit the area closest to them. “The Wash coastline is already an internationally-important area for bird populations and the South Lincolnshire coastline in particular is famed for its natural unspoilt beauty and its huge skies and spectacular sunrises and sunsets. This new project will being new visitors to the area.” For more information on the England Coast Path, visit https://www.gov.uk/ government/collections/england-coastpath-improving-public-access-to-the-coast

What’s on at Boston Library in November

Adult choice Warfare in the Ancient World by Brian Todd Ever wanted to get into reading non-fiction history but found most books too boring? Warfare in the Ancient World might just be the book for you. Brian Todd Carey has a captivating style of writing that will certainly keep you gripped. It makes the heroic effort of covering the advances made in battle tactics and technology, starting from ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt right up to the fall of the western half of the Roman Empire. It does this in a progressive chronological order, looking at twenty-six selected battles and the use of dozens of tactical maps.

Shared Reading Group 10.30-11.30am Mondays 2nd, 16th, 30th November Storytime Every Friday 2.00-2.30pm Social Knit Work – informal gathering for crafters every Saturday 1 -4pm

Junior choice Carlo and the Really Nice Librarian by Jessica Spanyol This is a beautiful story about a young Giraffe called Carlo and his first visit to the Library, he is very impressed by the all the books, the colourful posters and the chairs with wheels on. He meets the Librarian Mrs Chinca (who is a crocodile, yikes!) and at first she seems a little scary. But the Librarian tells Carlo about the all the library books with beautiful pictures and exciting stories. Carlo couldn’t believe how much Mrs Chinca knew about books and that she really isn’t so scary. This is a lovely book about a very first library visit, getting a library card and meeting library staff, and an ideal read to introduce any young child to the joy of libraries, reading for pleasure and taking books home to borrow for free.

Please note Boston Library will be closed the morning of Friday 20th November for staff training - it will open from 1.30-5.00pm

School news

Calling teachers, PTA members, pupils… Do you have exciting news at your school? If you would like to share your school news please send details to editor@simplyboston.co.uk

Fishtoft Academy

Bicker Preparatory School At the end of September Year 5 pupils enjoyed Bikeability training around the roads of Bicker. Class teacher Mrs Wendy Bell said “This course is excellent training in road safety, the children learn how to check their bicycle, maintain it and learn various rules to keep safe on the road. We like our pupils to take this course before they move on to Secondary Schools where they negotiate busy town roads either as a pedestrian or a cyclist.”

Boston College Boston College’s Animal Care department have launched into their exciting new venture this September, by opening their brand new Animal Care facilities on the Rochford campus. A transformation has taken place on the Goodliffe Centre over the last few months, meaning that Boston College can now provide the ideal facilities to bring the practical elements of the Animal Care course back to the Rochford campus. This facility means that all learners on the course have full access to animals every day. The new specialised unit now has bespoke aviaries housing, small finches and parakeets in an enclosed outside area along with the grounds for rabbits and guinea pigs. There is inside accommodation for the small animals such as: mice, hamsters, rats, degus and chinchillas. An environmentally controlled warm room has been installed for the exotic species like chameleons, bearded dragons, snakes, amphibians and invertebrates. mammals such as dogs and cats will be coming on day visits to the college, and students will be able to study large mammals on the college visits that they will be taken on throughout the year. When speaking about the new facilities and wealth of animals at the college Animal Care, Instructor, Jackie Clarke-Williams, said “The students have a theory session in the classroom and can get hands on with the animals, assist in feeding, watering and cleaning out. Students will get to do health checks on the animals, weighing them and monitoring their wellbeing. All the resources are in one area and bring a huge advantage of being all on site at the main campus. Theoretical learning can be reinforced with the practical element of this course without leaving the building. All the animals have been donated to the college with the animal care staff working with local charities and animal organisations making those very important employment links for the students in the future.”

The governors, staff, children and parents of Fishtoft Academy are delighted to share with you their new outdoor learning environment. During the summer term the school embarked upon a project to improve the outdoor space at the front of school. The children asked for a separate play area for Star Fish class as well as a quiet area, the staff thought it would be great to have an outdoor learning space and the parents hoped for a sheltered area. A number of designs were created by different companies and the staff and children shared their thoughts about each one. Eventually a design was agreed upon and over the summer holidays, Newby Leisure started work! The small tired areas at the front of school were in desperate need of transformation, but would there be the space to include everything on the growing wish list? Everyone had to wait until September to find out, what the design would look like in reality and still wondered if it was really going to be possible to squeeze so much into such a small space. On the 2nd of October, Mr Newby joined an array of guests at the tree planting ceremony to officially celebrate the opening of our outdoor learning environment. All involved with Fishtoft Academy are delighted with the new space and have many people they would like to thank. Obviously, to Mr Newby for the design and works completed; to local residents who had lorries and noise to contend with, but also to a number of people who made donations to help us further enhance the area: Mr Malc Firth kindly donated a tree; Mr Green (Fishtoft’s caretaker) donated grasses, plants and his time to plant the raised beds; Johnsons Garden centre have donated a range of ferns, grasses and bamboos to complete the raised beds and Irelands Farm machinery who bought a tractor for the children to explore at the ceremony and generously donated a number of tractors for the children to play with in the new area. All that is left now is for the children to raise money for pebbles and cobbles to put in the raised beds and toy dinosaurs, animals, fairies and cars to play with in amongst the plants.

Join us at the start of Boston’s Mayflower 400 journey for Illuminate, the first of a series of events leading up to the international celebration of the 400th anniversary of the sailing of the Mayflower in 2020. It’s going to be a dazzling evening! Community groups and schools are working throughout November with artists Julie Willoughby and Ruth Pigott to make a spectacular lit lantern parade which will include stars, fish, pilgrim puppets and the Mayflower ship. The groups will parade the lanterns in two spectacular processions, with everyone meeting in Market Square. Once there they will sing a beautiful song composed by groups in Boston with Jo Freya. Rhubarb Theatre will also be performing Mayflower, a modern telling of the epic journey of the Mayflower Pilgrim Fathers.

6th Form Options

6th Form Options If you are in your GCSE year then you will soon need to start focusing on the question “what next?” Taking the time to consider your options now will pay dividends in the future

I

t may seem early to start thinking about what you want to be doing in just under a year from now or, even more so, what you want to do for your career, but putting in the time now will ensure you are able to make well-informed decisions down the line. After your GCSEs you will need to decide your next step – whether it be A Levels or vocational qualifications you will need to think about the best place for you to study. The best place to start is to make a list of sixth forms and colleges in your area that you would like to consider. At this stage it is best to not rule anything out unless you have a really specific reason. Once you have your short list you can start to investigate a little further. Most schools and colleges will have a prospectus available and a website so start reading! If your school has a sixth form attached then of course you have the option of staying there but it is not obligatory so you should explore fully all of your options, even if you choose to stay put as a result! Perhaps the most important thing to bear in mind is the subjects you wish to study. At the end of your GSCEs you should have an idea about what you enjoy studying and, more importantly, what you are good at. Study at A Level is more in depth and so having an interest in the subject is important. If you know you want to study A Levels but don’t know what and don’t really have a clear idea of what you want to do afterwards then consider studying subjects

which appear often in entrance requirements across a broad range of degrees. Maths (and further Maths), English Literature, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Geography, History and Languages will leave a huge range of courses open to you at degree level. If you are thinking that a vocational qualification is the way forward then you can narrow your searches accordingly. Have a look at the courses available and how strong the ties are between the college and local businesses. If you are learning a new trade or profession then you will need to practice along the way and if you can do it in a professional setting then even better. When looking at courses and subjects check the entry requirements. Many A Level courses will have minimum GCSE requirements, usually a Grade C or above. Whether you choose A Levels or vocational qualifications you will be developing new skills and studying in a much different way so you will be expected to become a more independent, original thinker. Be confident that you will be able to manage →

6th Form Options

→ 6th Form Options (Continued) the workload. Similarly you will need to become proficient in time management so the physical location of the sixth form or college might be important. Once you have whittled your list down to your favourites the next thing to do is find out when their open days and evenings are and plan a visit. While a prospectus and website will give you information on sixth forms and colleges there is no substitute for a visit in person where you can get a real feel for the atmosphere. During your visit take the opportunity to speak to the staff and pupils so you can really gauge what the place is like. While looking at classrooms is very important take the chance to look a little further afield - visit the grounds themselves, the library, common room, study areas and most definitely the canteen! You are going to be spending a lot of time in these places over the next two years and you need to be comfortable in the facilities. Once you have decided on a place you may have an informal interview as well as having to fill in your application form. Take this opportunity to ask lots of questions (as well as answering them!), both from an academic point of view such as pass rates, where students go onto after finishing sixth form and the such) as well as anything important to you personally, for example, clubs you can join and opportunities to socialise. If university is part of your plan then you will be making your application whilst in sixth form, generally in the first term of your second year. If you are looking

“During your visit take the opportunity to speak to the staff and pupils so you can really gauge what the place is like.

to begin work once you have finished then you will similarly need to be thinking about compiling your CV and putting forward some job applications. Whichever way you are looking at going, have a look at the provision your sixth form or college has set out to help you achieve this. Most of all it has to feel right for you. As important as it is to have the opinions of your friends and family only you will know what it truly right for you. If you are in any doubt then speak to the institutions you are considering and ensure all of your questions have been answered before you take that decision. After all, this is one decision that must not be taken lightly.

Sixth Form Tips How do you go about making sure your time in sixth form is a productive and rewarding one? We provide our top tips

ecisions, decisions! It doesn’t seem like five minutes since you chose your GCSE options and now you are being asked to think about what to do after your exams! A little forward planning before you start though can ensure you make the most of your time in sixth form. 1) Make the right subject choices It’s been said time and again that your subject choice can be critical to your success. Look at the subjects you enjoy, what you are thinking of doing for your career and what your sixth form has to offer and make an informed decision by doing lots of research. There are many people able to help you, from your teachers to your careers advisor at school and advisors from

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN your potential new college. If you need to, start by making lists and narrow them down. You will be able to move forward with confidence if you feel like you have explored all of the avenues available to you. 2) Make sure you have the right equipment. Whether it’s A Levels or a vocational course, having the correct equipment is key. Before you start back in September your sixth form or college will provide you with a list of all of the equipment you will need so make sure you have everything you need bought in good time. 3) Develop good study habits Being in your GCSE year you should already have some good study habits in place. The demands of A Levels or vocational

qualifications are more than those placed on you by your GCSEs so planning your time will pay dividends. Prioritise the tasks you have and write up notes as you go along. If you can, take time to read more widely outside your course texts – it will help broaden your understanding of the subjects you are studying and will prepare you well should you be hoping to go to university. 4) Ask for help Finally, and this is a biggie, always ask for help when you need it. Post-GCSE you will be expected to be far more independent in your learning and as such if you have any questions or feel yourself falling behind then you must ask for help to ensure it does not spiral out of control. Staff are there to help you – all you have to do is let them know!

Christmas Gift Guide

Popular Christmas Toys 2015 At some point in our lives, every parent has experienced the trauma of trying to secure a “must have” toy for their child before Christmas. But Mums and Dads take heart, it’s not a new phenomenon! ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

A

s a nation we love Christmas. OK, we like to moan when Christmas displays go up in the shops in September but by and large it’s our favourite time of year. And as such we love to do it right. According to YouGov, Britons spend £22.5 billion on Christmas every year. Each household spends an average of £604 on presents, £174 on food and drink and £43 on cards, trees and decorations. So it’s safe to say we go all out! Christmas shopping can be a fun experience, provided we leave ourselves enough time (gentlemen, I’m thinking specifically about you here). Visiting the shops all decorated and festive for a shopping spree can be fun if done with friends. Even internet shopping of an evening to get it all done without leaving the house can be strangely satisfying. Perhaps the one spanner in the works comes in the form of the “must have” toy for children. As if there aren’t enough awesome toys to choose from, every single child must have the one thing that is in short supply. All hail the gods of marketing I suppose! While it may feel like this is a recent phenomenon it really isn’t. A hundred years ago toys were being released which quickly became a craze such as the hula-hoop in the

Coming back to the present, which toys are this year’s “must have”? Well Hamleys, Toys R Us, Amazon and Argos all released their top presents back in July (remember that moaning thing I said we did? Now would be the time to do it quickly) and here are what looks to be the main contenders – although don’t discount something newer coming out later just to keep us all on our toes!!

Colin Luesby Interiors Celebrates 55 Years

A business doesn’t trade for 55 years by chance – a winning mix of quality and excellent customer service has allowed Colin Luesby Interiors to look forward to the next 55

aul Trevor from Colin Luesby Interiors is in a good mood. It’s ten o’clock in the morning and he’s already been working for four hours but he has a fantastic coffee maker and much to celebrate. The family business has turned 55 and is going strong. And Paul knows the reason why: “The quality of our kitchens speak for themselves. Add to that the standard of our work and the customer service we offer and that leads to repeat business. We’re always happy to see previous customers return.” Paul has recently fitted a third kitchen for a customer who first bought from Colin Luesby forty years ago. That sort of customer loyalty is rewarded by a fantastic aftercare service. During my visit a customer came in asking for replacement parts for an appliance no longer stocked. But that wasn’t a problem and a couple of codes later and the replacement parts were on order. Colin Luesby Interiors offer a full service from the very beginning when you begin to have ideas about what you are after right through to design and installation. There is a team of in-house fitters to professionally

fit the kitchen and plumbing, electrical and tiling is all included. New customers are always free to call but Paul recommends they hop in the car and head to Swineshead and have a chat about just what they have to offer. Keep Warm This Winter

Being Energy Efficient The winter months can be a source of worry for many people as energy prices continue to rise, but there are some things you can do to ensure you are being as energy efficient as possible

P

erhaps the most important thing you can do it insulate and draught proof your house. Turn to page 32 to learn more about insulation and draught proofing. It is important to keep as much heat in as possible, especially if you are trying to save money. More people are buying electricity monitors so they can keep an eye on how much power they are using and, indeed, where the largest costs are coming from. You can buy a monitor from around the £20 mark. Consider your appliances and assess how energy efficient they are. With many appliances now being A rated you might find there are large savings to be had by upgrading to newer models in the long run. Also, when using appliances make sure you are using them efficiently. Wait until you have a full load of washing or the dishwasher is full before you run the appliances. On bright days you might like to hang the washing outside rather than use energy running the tumble dryer. If you haven’t already then change your lightbulbs to the energy efficient variety. As well as saving you money they also last longer than the old-fashioned lightbulbs they are replacing. And speaking of light, grab a compass and see if any part of your roof faces south. If it does you need to speak to someone about getting some solar panels put up there! There are still some companies who will install them for free for you, allowing you to take advantage of free electricity generated during the day without having a huge outlay. One of the quickest ways to save money is to switch your energy supplier which is an easy process provided you have internet access. Using

a comparison website is your best bet as they are able to compare a wide variety of companies and tariffs. Before you go online make sure you have the following details to hand: your address and postcode, the details of your current electricity and gas supplier, the details of the tariff you are currently on, how much you pay and your bank details to allow you to set up a direct debit (which is another good tip for energy bills – you will often receive a discount for paying by direct debit). Simply enter your details on the website’s form and the results page will bring up all of the options available to you. If you find that there are savings available to you then all you need to do is complete the switch form and your new supplier will do the rest for you – there won’t be any disruption to your energy supply. Just make sure that you don’t have any cancellation fees in place with your current supplier before you make any changes.

❱ BY TIM BARNES-CLAY

eep is celebrating its most fruitful year in Britain ever. It is a vital market for the company because we Brits buy more Cherokees than anywhere else in Europe or Africa. The American auto maker aims to echo this success in 2016. But how is it going to do it? Well, one way is to give the admired Cherokee line-up more ‘oomph’. So, that’s why the good-looking Jeep is now obtainable with 185hp and 200hp outputs. It offers an appreciably wider spread of pulling power from low revs, giving greater bang for your buck. But it isn’t just about enriched performance, the 2.2 Cherokee oil-burner now offers better fuel economy than the departing two-litre 170hp automatic lump. Available only with Jeep’s smooth changing nine-speed automatic gearbox, and paired to the company’s Active-Drive four-wheeldrive systems, the all new Cherokee 2.2 versions are inundated with equipment. The range now has more spec as standard, including an electrically adjustable driver’s seat, an automatic anti-dazzle rear-view mirror with built-in microphone and an electric

30 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON

tailgate. Perhaps more significantly, though, all Cherokees score highly with safety – achieving the maximum 5-stars in Euro NCAP’s tough tests. But back to the new engine under the bonnet. It is assembled for our market in the Pratola Serra plant, near Avellino, Italy. Armed with the 4x4 Jeep Active Drive I system, the Cherokee 2.2 MultiJet II 200hp reaches a maximum speed of 127mph. It accelerates from zero to 62mph in 8.5 seconds, has a typical combined fuel consumption figure of 49.6mpg and CO2 emissions of 150g/km. The Cherokee 2.2 MultiJet II 200hp with Active Drive II and lowrange has a top speed of 126mph, 0-62mph time of 8.7 seconds, and a combined fuel consumption of 46.3mpg, with 160g/km of CO2 emissions. Finally, Longitude and Longitude+ trim levels are provided with a 2.2 MultiJet II 185hp variant, in combination with 4x4 Jeep Active Drive I and the nine-speed automatic transmission. Prepared in this way, the Cherokee reaches a maximum speed of 125mph and gets from zero to 62mph in 8.8 seconds. Combined fuel economy and emissions are 49.5mpg and

150g/km. Behind the wheel of the quickest diesel – the 2.2 MultiJet II 200hp Limited 4WD automatic with Active Drive I - I found everything rapid enough. Certainly, the more commanding motor is a real step-up from the unit it supersedes. You no longer have to work the engine like a dog to make spirited progress. It is even quite soothing when you’re not pushing the pace. Undeniably, one of the Cherokee’s fortes is its ride. For a midsized sport utility vehicle (SUV) with off-road know-how, the Cherokee handles adeptly. The only time you notice the Jeep get a little unsettled is if you throw it in to a bend. Then there is perceptible body roll. The new 2.2 MultiJet II engine certainly places the Jeep Cherokee towards the crest of the mid-size SUV class for pace, poise and proper efficiency. It is no BMW X3 but it brings the fight to the likes of Honda’s CR-V – and is sure to put the fabled motor manufacturer on track for even more success in the United Kingdom next year. The Jeep Cherokee range starts at £26,095 for the 2.0 MultiJet II 140hp Longitude FWD manual, rising to £37,995 for the 2.2 MultiJet II 200hp Limited 4WD automatic.
