Welcome

to the September issue So that’s the summer holidays over and done with and the children are heading back to school – I know I say this every year but doesn’t it go quickly? Due to having building work at home I was unable to enjoy my garden this summer but it did prompt visits to green spaces away from home which was lots of fun! If you have children who are coming up to school age or are due to make the move up to secondary school we have shared our thoughts on why it is so important to go to school open days and what to look out for. Choosing the right school for your child is so important you owe it to both yourself and your children to do it right. If you are at the start of your searches then good luck and we hope that attending open days and evenings will enable you to make an informed decision. Elsewhere in the magazine we share some hearty autumn recipes using the humble Lincolnshire Sausage, there’s nothing better than a little comfort food when the summer weather finally begins to fade! Our motoring correspondent Tim Barnes-Clay has a look at some of the new cars being released with the 65 plates, if you are shopping around for a new car then this might article might point you in the right direction! Finally we pay a visit to Rolec in Frampton and tell the story of this award-winning company. Enjoy the issue.

You can help set crime-fighting priorities for 2016 Residents of Boston Borough, East Lindsey and South Holland are invited to complete an annual community safety survey to help the East Lincolnshire Community Safety Partnership focus on issues identified by the public. Give them your views on crime and anti-social behaviour and you could be in with a chance of winning £30 in high street vouchers. Last year they worked on issues you identified through the survey including: Programmes to deter young people from engaging in anti-social behaviour (Activate in South Holland and Street Smart in Boston

borough). ‘Safezones’ in each district to educate people about safe drinking levels, personal safety and deterring violence. Implementing a Public Spaces Protection Order in Boston Town Centre to manage anti-social behaviour related to street drinking. Introducing a ‘voluntary code of conduct’ for off licenses in Spalding Town Centre to promote responsible management of alcohol sales. Operations Cyclone and Shout to tackle cycle thefts and shoplifting in Boston Town Centre. The survey is available to complete online from

Monday, August 3 to Friday, October 30 by visiting the Boston Borough, East Lindsey or South Holland websites. If you would prefer to complete a paper copy these can be obtained from your local council reception area. The East Lincolnshire Community Safety Partnership is a statutory body comprising of the police, district and county councils, fire and rescue, probation and health. It is required to undertake an annual review of crime and community safety issues and to produce a partnership plan to outline how it will tackle crime and ASB and to make people feel safer.

Neighbourhood groups’ future secured Two neighbourhood action groups that work to improve their local communities have come together to become a bigger force and secure their future. High Street South and Boston East Neighbourhood Action Group has been formed out of the previous High Street South and Main Ridge East Placecheck groups. The new group has also agreed to take Tower Road and Lindis Road under its wing. Jody Raggo, previously secretary of the High Street South group and now of the new partnership, said: “By coming together, the High Street South and Boston East groups now have an even bigger voice when tackling and raising community issues with our service providers such as Lincolnshire Police and Boston Borough Council. “The themes of littering, street drinking, antisocial behaviour, street parking and speeding are common for these two areas and, as our neighbourhoods back onto each other, it was a natural fit to join up and tackled these issues together.” The groups decided to merge after the leaders of the previous Main Ridge East group stood down. It left that group without leadership and the other group was beginning to struggle for members. Mandy Exley, Lincolnshire Community and Voluntary Service (LCVS) community development worker, provided free support to help the groups find a way to form a partnership rather than let either of them fold. Mandy then supported the groups to ensure bank accounts

and paperwork was properly completed to allow the merger. Mr Raggo said: “Not only do we try to be the voice of our community, we also carry out regular litter picks and environmental improvement projects such as shrub removal and planting to make our area a more attractive place to live. “We’re passionate about Boston and helping to improve the area. If you are too, the group would love to hear from you. We’re all likeminded people who care about our area.” The groups were originally formed under the Placecheck Project, a partnership between LCVS and Boston Borough Council funded by the Health and Well-being Programme, which aimed to enable community engagement to drive positive change in Boston neighbourhoods and began in 2009. LCVS works to help community-minded individuals and groups to get established, achieve their goals and flourish through providing support with paperwork and governance, resources, sourcing funding and finding and training volunteers. In addition, LCVS’s health trainers work with individuals to help them kick bad habits and get on the path to better health. High Street South and Boston East Neighbourhood Action Group meets on the first Tuesday of every month at 6.30pm at Boston Baptist Church, High Street, Boston. All welcome. For more information contact Jody Raggo on 07903 857263 or email highstreetandbostoneast@gmail.com

Each issue Peter Bedford, leader of Boston Borough Council, discusses the important topics in and around Boston Boston continues to present an attractive proposition to enterprising businesses, with news of another new store opening. The judgement of Asda’s former chief executive is that Boston should be one of the first towns chosen for one of his new shops as part of a 50-strong national roll out. A point I have been making is being proved – build it and they will come. In recent months we have had a steady influx of new businesses which have generated interest among other businesses. This is also recognised by the chief executive of the new store, Pep&Co, who has said they will play their part in helping the town centre thrive. The new jobs created will be welcome, as will the plugging of holes in the high street – or, in this case, Pescod Square. The new shop will take over the large space previously occupied by Clinton Cards, which has been empty for quite a long time. Pep&Co, family fashions and homeware, will join a growing list of “newcomers” to Boston including a butchers (not really a newcomer, but they have opened their second shop), a farm equipment manufacturer, B&M with their new store at Alban Retail Park, Pandora, a national jewellery chain, Maud’s, another jewellers, Wilcox and Carter’s expansion and Lildl, with plans to open a supermarket here. Not bad for the first few months of 2015. While we welcome all to our town, especially businesses and people who want to do business with them, there have to be controls and rules on parking, otherwise we would have a chaotic freefor-all. Recently there has been an issue about on-street parking, and there is confusion about who is responsible for what. Boston Borough Council only has enforcement responsibility for its own car parks. These are the car parks which are off the street

for which you must buy and display a ticket for the period you want to park. Parking on the street, and this includes the Market Place, is governed by Lincolnshire County Council, not the borough council. There was much interest at the recent Local Government Association national conference in two case studies presented by Boston Borough Council. Other councils were interested to hear and learn from our experiences dealing with a major crisis – the flood of December, 2013. We laid out how we dealt with the recovery and resilience operation. It is encouraging to hear news of many more people being signed up for automatic flood warnings. The Environment Agency has teamed up with digital communications company EE for a new scheme to send flood warnings to mobile phone users in Boston borough. All EE customers registered in flood risk areas in the borough will receive messages from the Environment Agency’s Floodline Warnings Direct service, giving people valuable time to prepare. The scheme is the first of its kind in England and is recognition of Boston’s frontline position . This innovative move and the work currently underway to ensure the Boston Barrier is built without any delay reflects the importance placed at national levels to help the town and its residents be better protected from future flooding. Our second best-practice study was the Rogue Landlords Project and the council’s efforts to improve the quality of privatelyrented properties. Finally, after the elections the council has settled down to another period of activity and I am pleased to have at my side a Cabinet of experienced and enthusiastic councillors who are passionate about the town and borough and have their sleeves rolled up ready for hard work ahead. Cllr Peter Bedford

Home Improvement

Garages and Outbuildings Having the space you want and need

T

here are many ways to add space to your home. Taking advantage of the space you have outside of your house is a good place to start. Whether it’s at the bottom of the garden or at the side of the house, making smart decisions will give you that all-important additional room. If you have an integral garage then there is the option to convert it into a room to give you more space in the house. Doing this you can add a dining room, family room, office or whatever you have the need for. Surveys suggest that nine out of ten homes with a garage don’t actually keep their car in them so it is space which is begging to be used! If you do like to put your car away in the evenings but also want that extra room in your house then consider building a garage next to the house. Provided you do not live in a listed building then garages are usually considered to be permitted development and as such planning permission is not required. It is always good practice to check though and all of the guidelines can be found at www.planningportal.gov.uk Round the back of the house you might like to consider a garden room at the bottom of the garden. Also referred to as home offices or studios these structures are usually made of timber but are connected to mains electricity for the purpose of being a fully functioning room. People who work from home but like to have their own dedicated space will benefit from a garden room. If you love evenings in your garden then you should look into summer houses. Whilst most summer houses look similar on the outside, the way they look on the inside is limited only by your imagination! Some people have a set of garden furniture in there, others decorate more elaborately. It’s not uncommon for a summer house to be decorated in the same way as a room in the

8 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

house! As well as being used for appreciating the nice weather and the garden some are used for entertaining (a fab space for a bar…) whereas others become ‘man caves’, the increasingly popular retreat for the men in the household. Get in there quick though boys as the ladies are reclaiming them and turning them into ‘she-sheds’!! Coming away from the fun and back to the utility, a garden shed can be the key to keeping your garden looking its best. Storing tools, the lawnmower, bikes and other sundries a garden shed keeps everything stored and secure. You can also keep seasonal garden items stored when they are not in use. Most new sheds come with a ten year guarantee and take very little maintenance so if you don’t have one then you should give it some thought. Finally, growing your own - flowers, plants, vegetables, the list goes on! If you want to start growing your own then the conditions need to be right and if you have the space then a greenhouse will provide those for you. If space is limited then you can buy smaller lean-to greenhouses or even smaller still portable greenhouses which use polythene instead of glass and can sit unobtrusively on the patio.

“Whilst most summer houses look similar on the outside, the way they look on the inside is limited only by your imagination!”

Advice

Did you know that Boston Citizens Advice Bureau is a local charity? Our team is mainly made up of volunteers – people like you who give up a few hours of their spare time to help others in their local area ❱ BY STUART HELLON Our volunteers provide our community with FREE, impartial, independent and confidential information and advice on everyday issues including debt, benefits, employment, family and housing. But is doesn’t stop there – we are also able to help our clients with other problems that they may be experiencing such as consumer, budgeting and careers information. Due to the high demand for our service, we really need new volunteers to help with all areas of work in the bureau. We currently have the following opportunities available: assessors, advisers, administrators, receptionists and campaigners. Many people have been put off volunteering at the bureau in the past as they

believed that they would need to be legally trained or from a professional background. However this is simply not the case. We want to recruit volunteers who are representative of our community. This will help our clients to feel at ease when attending the bureau for support. So whatever skills you have and whatever your background, we really want to hear from you. Volunteering at the Boston CAB will not only allow you to help your community, you will get to meet new people and learn new skills. We will provide you with and an in depth induction and training programme which will follow your pace of learning, giving you the confidence to use your new skills.

Volunteer Quote “I am a housewife but I do have previous experience of working with DWP and helping people to get back into employment. I decided to become a volunteer at the bureau for two reasons. Firstly, I was new to the Boston area and thought that volunteering would help me to meet other people and to learn about the area. Secondly, I thought that volunteering at the bureau would be interesting and that the skills I have gained during my employment

would be put to good use. I don’t want the commitment of work at the moment but still want to keep using my skills so volunteering fits in really well. It gives me a sense of purpose - I enjoy the feeling that I have contributed and given something back. I have a strong sense of commitment to the bureau as I have been given lots of training and support by the bureau staff. I really enjoy working with the clients and the variety of issues- I never know what is coming next!”

So if you fancy a challenge and would like to make a difference to our community or would simply like further information about volunteering, please contact Louise on 01205 318645 or email enquiries@bostoncab.org.uk for an application pack.

The Memory Of Blood by Christopher Fowler If you haven’t come across Bryant and May and their Peculiar Crimes Unit yet, you’re in for a treat. The series occupies that unusual territory between comedy and crime where there might be something nasty around the corner, but you’re in for a laugh while you’re getting there. Vivid characters spring to life in this expert crime caper, and the author seems to be enjoying it almost as much as the reader. Has Mr. Punch really thrown the baby out of the impresario’s penthouse window? Will Colin Bimsley the clumsy DC ever get his girl? Just how old is Janice Longbright, and will Victor the yellow Mini make it to the end of the chapter? The plot is almost beside the point as set pieces and great cop-team dialogue bounces off the page. This is an expert writer who knows how to entertain without dumbing down, and any book in the Bryant and May series is the right place to start. Junior choice Underwater Dogs by Seth Casteel This is a fabulous book by the award winning pet photographer Seth Casteel. Packed full of charming and funny images of dogs swimming and diving, this book will delight readers of all ages regardless of whether they are dog lovers. If you want more then there is a similarly titled adult version with even more photos.

Suicide! Would you be able to ask the question “Are you thinking of suicide?”

One in 20 people at any one time in Britain are having thoughts of suicide and Lincolnshire figures have been higher than the national average. As ASIST Lead for Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, Rita Blackler is determined to help save lives... “We want to spread increased suicide awareness throughout the county, particularly in areas where there has been a high suicide rate. As a county we are working really hard with lots of organisations coming together to bring the suicide figures for Lincolnshire right down. People are often frightened to ask if someone is having thoughts of suicide as they fear they won’t know how to help if the answer is “Yes!” The majority of people who take their own lives don’t actually want to die they just want to be free of the pain and situation they are in. The more we talk about suicide, the more we can affect change. If the stigma and the taboo can be reduced, people at risk will hopefully talk to someone about their feelings and will find reasons to stay alive. There is often a lot of shame and guilt

attached to suicide because people feel they could or should have spotted the signs and done something to help, especially when it’s someone close to them”. If you would like to be ready, willing and able to save a life please consider enrolling on one of our courses: ASIST: A two consecutive-day training course teaching ‘suicide first aid’ to keep someone safe. safeTalk: A three and a half hour suicide awareness course.

To find out more about either of these courses which are free for those who live or work in Lincolnshire please contact the ASIST administrator Maureen Toogood by calling 01529 416251 or email Maureen.Toogood@LPFT.nhs.uk

Choosing a School

Open Days and Evenings

A

Why it is so important to take the time to attend

friend of mine has a daughter who is about to reach school age and she feels like she’s at the start of a very long journey. “Getting the right start is so, so important” she said to me, “I don’t want to base my decisions purely on an Ofsted report, I want to know more”and she’s absolutely right. I’ve also got friends who have children who will be starting secondary school in September 2016 and they also have the task of finding the right school. So whether your child is about to start primary or secondary there is a lot to consider. Which is why Open Days and Evenings can be really important. No matter how good a website or school brochure is,nothing beats walking through the door and you and your child having a good look around in person. You will both be able to get a feel for the school, take a look at what is important to you (which will be different things!!) and hopefully help you hone your options until you are ready to make a decision. For parents of primary age children often their first port of call is to speak to the local authority and see which schools are in their catchment area which will very quickly narrow down the choices available. For secondary schools, eleven plus results will reveal the options. When you have made your shortlist find out when the Open Days or Evenings are and put your name down to attend. You might like to have a conversation with your child to find out the most important things they hope to find at their new school. For secondary children, think about the extra-curricular activities they like to do and bear them in mind. Generally speaking, Open events tend to follow a similar format with a welcome from the head and possibly some of the teachers. You are then taken on a tour of the school. It’s the perfect opportunity to speak to the head, the teachers and current students. If it’s an open day rather than an evening then there is a very good chance you will get to see a typical day at the

school. Enjoy looking around the classrooms and pay attention to the displays on the walls, they give a good flavour of what is being taught and how the children’s work is presented and celebrated. Take a look at the number of students in each class and the teacher to pupil ratio, it will give you a good idea how much contact time your child will have with their teacher. Also ask about the level of contact between parents and teachers - how often do they get in touch, what for and how? Many schools take part in the ParentMail system which keeps parents up to date via email and text. If you like regular contact then make sure you will receive it! Ask about extra-curricular activities and school trips. Even if you are pretty sure that you know which school you would like your child to attend make sure you look around more than one school to give you a really good idea of how the school compares to others. More than anything ask yourself “Will my child be happy here?” Each school will have its own strengths and matching them to your child’s interests and strengths is the ultimate aim.

65 Reg Cars

Top new 65 reg cars The first day of September will see status-conscious motorists across the United Kingdom making a beeline for cars with shiny new 65 plates

S

❱ BY TIM BARNES-CLAY

o, if you’re thinking of getting in on the latest registration as a buyer or your company vehicle’s up for renewal, check out the these top new cars of 2015. 1 - Volkswagen Passat GTE Saloon The new VW Passat is one of the most pioneering business-cum-family sized cars to hit Britain. It is the first Passat with a plug-in hybrid drive system, delivering zero-emissions, too. Thrills haven’t been forgotten either, because, in GTE mode, the Volkswagen sprints like an athlete. The car is well-built, and the seats are comfortable. Leg and headroom are very good, as well, while the boot is gigantic. This is possibly green motoring at its classiest. The Passat GTE is available to order now, with first UK deliveries in October. Priced from: £33,000 2 - Jaguar XE This new Jaguar comes brimming with technology, ultra-efficient engines and sharpsuited aesthetics. Inside, there are slabs of wood, leather and brushed aluminium, bringing the XE level with other business sized premium saloons. There is plenty of capacity for adults up front, and legroom in the rear equals what you get in German rivals. And with 455-litres of boot space you’ll easily get the family’s luggage in at weekends. The Jaguar has accomplished an amazing balance between ride comfort and handling prowess. Where competitors like the BMW 3 Series sits on the dynamics side of the fence and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class prefers luxury, the XE achieves both. Priced from: £26,990

3 - Subaru Outback The new Outback sports a fresh exterior design, a higher quality interior and a raft of new safety tech. The Subaru is available with diesel or petrol power, and has been developed to offer space, practicality, safety and all-terrain versatility, too. This makes it a very adaptable business-cumleisure motor – especially if you’re based in more rural areas. The boot capacity has increased against the departing model to 559 litres, with a new Smart Power Tailgate for greater ease-of-use. Priced from: £27,995 4 - Audi Q7 Although the exterior dimensions have been reduced, the new Audi Q7 offers more interior room, and has the all-important seven seats. All Q7s come with heaps of kit, including keyless go, cruise control, and 19 inch alloy wheels. All seats in the second and third rows have Isofix fixtures for child seats. Busy parents can therefore mount up to six child seats in the new Audi Q7. This Audi ticks all the boxes needed to be a success for business, family or pleasure, thanks to its large carrying practicality, classy interior, powerful performance and relaxed ride. Priced from: £44,995 5 - Volvo XC90 The new XC90 has an interior that’s contemporary, airy and neat. Amongst the soft leather, wood and metal finishes, the seven-seater features chairs that free up space, both in the second and third rows. The SUV boasts all the virtues that made the initial model one of Volvo’s most profitable cars ever, combining brilliant handling and comfort with superior get-you-there ability and

3 6

flexibility. The XC90 does it all; it’s perfect for a family, it looks good for business and it’s just the thing for anyone needing a safe, grippy car for all seasons. Priced from: £45,750 6 - Ford Mondeo Vignale This is the first vehicle to be introduced as part of Ford’s new Vignale luxury brand. Available in four-door and estate body styles, the Mondeo Vignale delivers exceptional executive car refinement with a quilted and tuxedo-stitched leather interior. It delivers a comfortable ride and incorporates enhanced sound insulation to better isolate road noise. The Ford Vignale Mondeo is available to order now at new flagship Ford Stores, currently opening across the UK. Priced from: £29,045 7 - Audi A8 Offered in standard or Long Wheelbase formats, the latest A8 features a rationalised choice of engines. It is loaded with a host of awesome tech, too, making the driving experience as luxurious as possible. The Audi A8’s cabin is sophisticated and sturdily built and the power-plant’s available mean the car is rapid, whichever model you opt for. The entry-level A8 is the 258bhp 3.0-litre TDI diesel and this is as swift as you’re ever likely to need. A more potent 4.2-litre TDI is also obtainable, while the lightening quick S8 has a 4.0-litre twin-turbo petrol engine that delivers 513bhp. Combined with the A8’s titanic size, the more powerful engines aren’t cheap to run, but if you keep with the oil-burners, official fuel economy figures are approaching 50mpg. Priced from: £59,585

Moving House

Moving House The end is in sight – you have sold your house, found a new one and are just about to receive your moving date. Now comes the job that everybody dreads, the packing!

T

he biggest job when moving house can be the packing, especially if you are downsizing as you will need to look extra carefully at what you are going to take with you. But whether your new house is smaller or not you can take the opportunity to go through your belongings. The easiest part is to throw away anything you no longer want or need. Next, create two piles in each room. One pile should be good quality items you no longer require and these can be sent to a charity shop who will be grateful of the donation, not to mention a little feelgood factor for you. The rest is everything you want to keep and these are the things you will need to pack. Once you have sorted your belongings you can decide whether to pack your things yourself or speak to a removal firm who can pack for you. If you choose to pack your things yourself then make sure that you have enough boxes, insulation (such as bubble wrap, newspaper, tissue paper) and tape (masking tape, parcel tape). As you pack make a note on each filled box of which room they will need to go in at the new house as well as brief details of what is in the box to help you to find any items you might need early on after the move. You can get boxes from a removal firm even if you are not using them for packing which is a good idea as they have

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

“However you decide to pack and move it is always a good idea to pack a separate bag and box with the essentials you will need on your first night in your new home...”

boxes that are a little different to your run-of-the-mill boxes such as wardrobe boxes which contain a rail for ease of moving your clothes. Whether you are using a removal firm or not as soon as you have your moving date you need to organise the removal. If you are hiring a van yourself then call and reserve a van for your moving date. One of the biggest mistakes you can make here is to hire the wrong size van. Underestimating the size you will need could result in you having to make many more trips or even not getting the job done in time which could cause problems. If in doubt, speak to the hire company who will be able to advise you. Unless you don’t have much to move however, it is always best to use a removal company. When using professionals you will need to get in touch with a moving date as soon as you can. Have a good look at their insurance documents to make sure everything you are moving will be covered. If not you may need to make alternative arrangements for those items. If you want the removal firm to pack for you then let them know as they will need to build in extra time to do this. When you speak to a potential removal firm for the first time you will need to let them have the following information: Where you are based and the area you are moving to The date and the time you will need them How much you think you have to move Details of large items of furniture which will need moving However you decide to pack and move it is always a good idea to pack a separate bag and box with the essentials you will need on your first night in your new home to stop you having to search through boxes. As well as a change of clothes and your toiletries you might like to keep the kettle handy so you can have a cup of tea before the mammoth task of unpacking begins! goals. Through weekly meetings you will learn more about your approach to food and gain hints and tips from others. You begin with a free food list which contains all the foods you are able to eat in unlimited amounts. You will set your own goals and be given the support you need to achieve them. Weight Watchers Over the last 50 years Weight Watchers has been in the business of changing the way people view food. Moving with the times you are able to follow their healthy-eating programme in a way that suits you , either online only, by attending weekly meetings or a combination of the two. Using the Weight Watchers ProPoints weight loss system no foods are off-limits. Within their literature you will find that every food has a ProPoints value. Depending on your weight you will be allocated a daily ProPoints allowance for you to spend in any way you choose (there are even extra points available during the week should you need them). Cambridge Diet The Cambridge Plan was created by Bio-chemist Dr Alan Howard and Dr Ian McLean-Baird as they sought to develop the “perfect diet”. It was launched in the UK in 1984 and 30 million people around the world have used it. Their soups, shakes, bars, savoury rice, spaghetti Bolognese, vanilla rice pudding and porridge can be used as a sole source of nutrition or combined with regular food for a more gradual weight loss or as a weight management system. Method: Preheat the oven to 220C / Gas Mark 7. Sieve the flour and salt into a large bowl. Cut the butter and lard into cubes and rub them into the mixture until it resembles bread crumbs. Make a well in the centre and pour in the water, mixing until you have a firm dough. Cover with cling film and leave to rest for 2030 minutes. Turn out the dough. Knead it lightly and flatten out into a square. Use a rolling pin to roll out a rectangle, roughly 30cm long and 25cm wide. Trim the rough edges and cut lengthwise down the middle to make 2

smaller rectangles. Lay 3 sausages end to end down the middle of each half. Fold the dough over the sausages to make long rolls with the dough overlapping at the bottom. Slice each roll crosswise into as many pieces as you require (depending on whether you want large or small sausage rolls, anywhere between 3 and 9 per half ). Transfer to a baking tray and brush the top with egg for a glaze. Bake in the oven until golden brown.

Ingredients

225g plain flour, pinch of salt, 30g lard, 125ml iced water, 200g butter, 6 Lincolnshire Sausages, 1 egg for glazing.

Toad in the Hole

140g plain flour, 3 eggs, 300ml milk, pinch of salt, 4tbsp oil, 8 Lincolnshire sausages.

Method: Preheat the oven to 220c / Gas Mark 7. Whisk together the flour, eggs, milk and salt. Pour oil into a large tin and brush it over the sides. Pour the batter into the tin and place the sausages on top. Cook in the oven for 30-40 minutes

Sausage and Bean Casserole Method: Preheat the oven to 200C / Gas Mark 6. Heat the oil in a pan and brown the sausages. Add the veg, stir in the tomato puree and fry. Add the beans and the stock and simmer. Remove from the heat and transfer into a casserole dish. Place in the oven and bake for 25 – 30 minutes.

Ingredients 

1tbsp oil, 8 Lincolnshire sausages, 2 chopped sticks of celery, 2 chopped peppers, 2 chopped carrots, 1 chopped onion, 1tbsp tomato puree, 800g baked beans in tomato sauce, 200ml vegetable stock.

Bathrooms

How to plan your bathroom for the best results Today there is so much choice when it comes to bathrooms it is easy to forget your personal taste and end up with a bathroom that while it might be beautiful doesn’t quite fit with your lifestyle. We have some tips for the planning stages

I

t is always a good idea to begin by thinking about the function of your bathroom, and it’s not as simply as it sounds. What do you use it for the most, for example is it a family bathroom? Which do you use most, shower or bath? Do your treat your bathroom as somewhere to relax and unwind or is it purely functional? Thinking ahead to a potential remodel, consider how much space you have to play with. Making sure everything will fit will save you problems down the line!! Do you get ready in the bathroom in the mornings – if you put your make-up on in the bathroom would a double sink and mirror be handy? If you are a shower person would a shower room or wet room be more appropriate? Narrowing down your options before you really start will can save you hours once you begin shopping. Most people begin by buying their bathroom suite. Many stores that sell bathrooms will offer a free design service so you can see how your bathroom will look before you order. Generally people will buy a bath or shower, a sink and toilet initially. These tend to be from the same range to give a uniform look to the bathroom. If you’re choosing a bath then you have the choice from a huge range from your standard panelled bath right up to freestanding roll top baths and everything in between. Showers are similiarly bountiful when it comes to choice so take the time to think about what your favourite shower features are to help narrow the search!! For sinks and toilets you can now choose between floor and wallmounted which can alter the look of the bathroom considerably. Once you have chosen you can choose your taps which gives you another opportunity to stamp your personality on the room. From there it’s all about storage – cabinets, under sink storage and shelves all provide the solution. The flooring and the walls will give your bathroom its ‘feel’ – modern, traditional, functional. Whether you choose tiles or lino flooring needs to be waterproof and non-slip. Most people prefer to tile their bathroom walls today and you can take your pick from ceramics, stone, glass and mosaic. You can really have fun with textures. . Finally your lighting. When choosing lighting you must consider how close it will be to a water source before you make your selection. Electrically speaking, your bathroom is divided into zones and only certain types of light can go into these zones 24 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

“Many stores that sell bathrooms will offer a free design service so you can see how your bathroom will look before you order.”

(it is calculated based on how likely the lights are to come into contact with water or water spray). Before you purchase your lights speak with your electrician to ensure you are buying the correct ones to avoid delays in fitting. All you need to do then is arrange fitting – if the company you bought from does not offer a fitting service then you will need to find a fitter and an electrician. Finally, be prepared for some upheaval as there may be some time during fitting when you will not have a water supply and if refitting is a big job you may not have a bathroom for a while so be sure to make alternative arrangements!!

❱ BY TIM BARNES-CLAY

he Toyota Prius Plus looks a little sexier now it’s had a facelift. The Japanese auto maker has given the green people carrier a sharp new front end, with LED headlamps and LED rear light clusters. Meanwhile, inside, there’s now a multimedia touchscreen with DAB, a reversing camera and Bluetooth. On higher trimmed Excel and Excel Plus models, Toyota’s ‘Touch 2 with Go’ system adds navigation and connectivity functions. These versions of the Prius Plus also benefit from tech features that improve safety and contribute to smoother and easier driving. They feature Toyota’s Pre-Crash Safety system, which is designed to help you avoid a collision, or to reduce the consequences should a crash happen. Behind the wheel, the instrumentation is still as bizarre as the Prius’ exterior. The dashboard is a blend of all kinds of materials, with irregularly organised switchgear. None of that, apart from some cheap feeling plastics is bad, though – just different to the norm. And that’s kind of refreshing.

28 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON

When you think ‘Prius’ – cool, rock and film stars who want to save the environment come to mind. But actually the Prius Plus is just as likely to be seen on the school run in suburban Britain as it is in Hollywood. There’s masses of headroom and the seven seater car’s third row of chairs is no worse than many. In other words, these extra seats are for kiddies only – not adults. No big deal there. With those two child friendly seats folded into the load floor, the resulting boot space is decent, albeit shallow. With all five seats folded down there’s a really practical long surface, with enough space for a trip to buy lots of tall furniture at IKEA, and other similar stores. In the middle row, each individual seat can glide forwards and backwards, and the outer ones tip forwards so your kids, or kids’ friends, can access the third tier. Under the bonnet, there’s a 1.8-litre petrol engine mated to an electric motor. A battery pack provides the ‘green’ power, supported by an engine-driven generator when possible. The basic car will do an official 68.9mpg, when fitted with 16-inch

wheels, but of more interest is the CO2 output of 96g/km, meaning you won’t have to pay road tax in the UK – at least for now. On the move, the Prius Plus skates away in ghostly silence under electric power - then the petrol engine kicks in with a noticeable thrum when the pace picks up. That said; the car’s continuously variable transmission (CVT) automatically and seamlessly changes through the gear ratios, making driving effortless. The Toyota doesn’t exactly rock when it comes to handling – with noticeable lean through country lane corners and light steering at motorway speeds. However, it never feels unsafe –which is the least you should expect of a people carrier. For enthusiasts of low emission motoring who have gone on to have a family, then, short of pedal power, this is a great way to transport the rug-rats to school and further afield. The Toyota Prius Plus is a truly realistic motor, albeit not the most thrilling of people carrying machines on the market. But, for its green, yet powerful talents, this Toyota is a car many more British families are likely to take to their hearts.
