Welcome to the September issue So, here we are at the start of the new school year for many children across the area. It’s an exciting time to catch up with what friends have been doing over the holidays as well as a little daunting for new beginnings, be that the first days at primary school or the move onto secondary education. Parents will enjoy the normality of the routine but long for the freedom of the holidays, it’s only a few weeks until half term! For me September is a great month as we usually go on holiday and my husband and I also celebrate our wedding anniversary, so there’s lots to look forward to in the Hammond household. In this issue we are helping you get rid of or at least work to banish the holiday excesses with hair repair from the sunshine and a few simple tricks to help you shed a few pounds. As winter will soon be here now is a great time to be prepared and we are offering our tips on getting ready and hopefully saving yourself some money too! If your child will be starting or changing school in September 2017 then make sure you read up on the advice we have on page 16. It can be daunting when we face change and especially as our children grow older but being well informed can make all the difference. Martin Lewis this month gives your wallet a workout and can literally save you hundreds of pounds in minutes! We are always looking for charities, community groups and events to feature in our local focus, so if you are involved in anything happening locally please get in touch to discuss further. All that’s left for me to say is to have a great month and enjoy the last of the summer weather!

NEWS A significant step forward for the Boston Barrier flood defence scheme Towards the end of August, the Environment Agency will ask the Secretary of State to grant powers to construct and operate a new tidal barrier with a moveable gate across the river Witham through a Transport and Works Act Order (TWAO). The Boston Barrier scheme is part of a phased approach to reduce the risk of tidal flooding to over approximately 14,300 properties in Boston over the next 100 years. The TWAO, if granted, would also authorise the construction of a new building to enable operation of the barrier, new flood defence walls on both banks of the Haven, a replacement gate across the entrance to the existing Port Wet Dock and enable the Agency to execute ancillary works, including dredging of the river. Members of the public and other interested parties will have the opportunity to give their
views on the proposals over a period of six weeks following the submission of the TWAO application to the Secretary of State. The barrier will also have the ability to be utilised in the future to control water levels, once appropriate subsequent approvals and works have been sought and granted, in the Haven generating economic and environmental benefits for Boston and aiding navigation between The River Witham and The Black Sluice Navigation. Although Water Level Management (WLM) originally formed a part of the Boston Barrier project, it was agreed that the further work required to take WLM proposals forward should not delay the tidal flood defence project in a Lincolnshire County Council Executive Committee decision in February 2015. Richard’s sky dive Richard Austin has always nursed an ambition to do a sky dive. Now, as an 80th birthday present from his wife, Alison, he is to leap from an aircraft at 13,500 feet. In typical fashion Richard, a borough councillor who lives at Wyberton, decided to put the thrill of his leap of faith to good purpose and is looking for sponsorship to raise money for a charity close to his heart – Boston Woods Trust. He joked that Alison, also a borough councillor, would not let him do the parachute drop until after they had celebrated their golden wedding anniversary earlier this month. He will make the tandem parachute descent in September from Langar airfield in Nottinghamshire. Richard said: “I have a head for heights. I have done a lot of abseiling and flying in my time, but this sky dive will be a first for me.” He has been heavily involved in the Boston Woods project from the beginning and it has developed to now provide free public access to 110 acres of woods containing 90,000 trees which have been planted and wild flower meadows with more than three-and-a-half miles of all-weather paths. However the project does needs funds for maintenance and improvement work.
The Trust is a charity run entirely by volunteers. You can help the project and sponsor Richard by phoning him on 01205 368351, emailing him at rwa@richardaustin. co.uk going online and making payment from your bank account to the Boston Woods Trust using the reference Sky Dive, account number 00216407, sort code 30-91-04 or by cheque made payable to Boston Woods Trust and sent to Richard Austin, Sky Dive, Cherry Tree Cottage, Low Road, Wyberton, Boston, PE21 7AP. Please write Sky Dive on the back of your cheque.
2017 Launch weekend at South Lincs Leisure South Lincs Leisure was established in 1992 as a family run dealership specialising in the sale of new and pre-owned caravans. Their business is based on the ethics of old fashioned personal service. Being one of the
smaller dealers in the industry they use this to their advantage, being able to give customers the time that buying a caravan or motorhome deserves. In 2011 they moved to a brand new site at Bridge Farm, Holme Road in Kirton. Offering a greater selection of caravans to browse and a refurbished workshop to carry out all types of work for caravans and motorhomes. They also have a fully stocked accessory shop for all your caravanning needs. On October 1 and 2 they will be showcasing the 2017 models along with a full celebration including BBQ and exclusive discounts, so why not pop down and see what a caravan could offer you.

Ombudsman complaints Boston Borough Council is among a small group of councils who have the fewest number of complaints referred to the Local Government Ombudsman, latest figures reveal. The council had no complaints made against it to the Local Government Ombudsman upheld in 2015/16. The borough council scored equal tenth out of 132 in a league table of total complaints – there are 364 authorities included but many tallied the same. A total of nine incidents concerning the borough council were reported to the Ombudsman and none were upheld. Two were referred back for local resolution and two were not upheld. Five were closed after initial enquiries by the Ombudsman’s office and the council scored a 100 per cent compliance rate. Birmingham City Council had the biggest number of complaints made against it at 527. The LGO’s annual review of local government complaints shows that it upheld 51 per cent of detailed investigations in 2015/16 – up from 46 per cent the previous year. The LGO received 19,702 complaints and enquiries about local authorities for the year ending March 31, 2016, which is a similar level to the previous year. It made 3,529 recommendations to remedy injustice in total. These include 633 recommendations to prevent injustice for the wider public, such as through procedural changes and local authority staff training. There were also 255 investigations where the LGO agreed the local authority had satisfactorily remedied the injustice before the LGO became involved in the complaint. Boston Borough Council’s Leader, Cllr Peter Bedford, said: “While it is gratifying to receive such a positive outcome in the Local Government Ombudsman’s annual report, we do value all the complaints we receive as opportunities for improvement.”

NEWS CELEBRATE WITH BIG LOTTERY FUNDING The Big Lottery Fund is calling on local groups and organisations in Boston to apply for funding to hold events or activities that will bring people together and celebrate what makes their local community special. A new £3.8 million grant programme called Celebrate is now open for groups and organisations of all shapes and sizes across England to apply for funding, between £300 and £10,000, to celebrate their local community in Her Majesty The Queen’s 90th birthday year. This opportunity comes as a survey* by the Big Lottery Fund found that given the chance, almost half (47%) of people in the East Midlands would like to celebrate the history of their local neighbourhood. The research also revealed that 61 percent of East Midlands people asked reported that they have never or cannot remember ever coming together to celebrate with their local neighbourhood. In response to these findings the Big Lottery Fund is putting people in the lead to come up with their own ideas on what they would like to celebrate, and what kinds of events they could host to bring all of their community together. The Celebrate programme is the perfect opportunity for people to showcase and enjoy something important to their community, be it an iconic building, a precious landscape, a unique service or a community hero. There will be £5 million available in total across the UK. Peter Ainsworth, UK Chair of the Big Lottery Fund said: “Celebrate gives people the chance to come together, whether that’s to mark something important to their community like The Queen’s 90th birthday, commemorate a historic local event, or simply get to know your neighbours better. We want to celebrate what makes your local community great, so I’d encourage groups of all sizes to get in touch with us with their ideas.” To be eligible, applicants must be part of a constituted group which has its own bank account. The Big Lottery Fund welcomes applications from voluntary or community organisations, schools and statutory bodies, particularly those who have never considered the Big Lottery Fund as a potential source of funding. Organisations are encouraged to submit their applications early to avoid disappointment as once funds have been allocated, Celebrate will close to new applications. For more information or to apply for a Celebrate grant please visit www.biglotteryfund.org.uk/ celebrateengland.

Volunteering helped Boston man break out of unemployment trap With money running low after a year of job hunting and the pile of rejection letters mounting, the last thing Andy Upsall felt like doing was working for free. Yet volunteering proved a turning point both in his life and career and now he is keen to tell others of the benefits. Andy Upsall, said: “I’d been unemployed for around a year when the Job Centre suggested I try volunteering to build up my CV. “I’d been made redundant from the printing firm Norprint, in Boston, where I worked on the machines, in the warehouse and did general physical work and wanted really to get into something more office based. “I did some computer courses and had been applying for five or six jobs a week – a large mixture of things but about 60 or 70 per cent office based – and getting nothing. “It knocks your confidence and makes you feel like doing nothing. My savings had run out by then and I was having to borrow money to pay the bills. “The idea of volunteering didn’t sit easily with me. It was a paid job I needed, but I agreed to meet with Lincolnshire Community and Voluntary Service (LCVS) for a chat. “I volunteered for just over six months when, finally, I was offered a job as a clerical officer at Pilgrim Hospital, Boston. “I was reluctant to volunteer at the start but it has helped me I am sure and I would definitely recommend volunteering to others.” Gill Williamson, LCVS’s community transport business development officer, said: “Andy’s contribution made a real difference to Boston Community Transport and we’re so grateful to
“I doubt if I would have got the job without the volunteering experience and the reference Gill, from Boston Community Transport, gave me.
him. It’s wonderful to know we have helped him in return and to see his volunteering serving as an effective springboard to the kind of paid employment he wanted.” LCVS supports charities and community groups to find volunteers and has details of hundreds of available roles. LCVS helps match would-be volunteers with the role that suits their needs in terms of time, skills and interest. David Fannin, LCVS chief executive, said: “Volunteering is great for job seekers and students who want to update, develop or broaden their CV. “But of course its appeal is very much wider than that too. Volunteering is great for people who might otherwise become isolated – offering them structure, a social outlet and to do something meaningful. It’s great for people who have skills they want to share with a worthwhile cause and it’s a perfect opportunity to try out something you’ve never done before whether that be working in an office or doing something more manual. Time and again we hear not only how valuable volunteering is to organisations but how it changes lives of individuals.” Volunteering roles currently available in Boston include opportunities to work with animals, children and older people and in everything from administration to gardening. An example of roles LCVS is helping to recruit to now include opportunities with the Specialist Young Witness Service to support young victims or witnesses or crime; St Botolphs Parish Church coffee shop to help staff it and reception work at the Len Medlock Voluntary Centre.

Each issue Peter Bedford, leader of Boston Borough Council, discusses the important topics in and around Boston
Peter’s Notes
A
t the time of writing this, to meet Simply Boston’s editorial deadline, the consultation for devolution of powers (and money) from Government to local authorities in Greater Lincolnshire was still live. By the time you read this we will have done our job and your consultation responses will be on the desk of the Secretary of State awaiting a decision. We have been told, in no uncertain terms, that your responses to the consultation will be a critical element in the final decision as to whether or not Greater Lincolnshire should have the benefit of devolved powers. Your views will also be considered by the House of Commons and the House of Lords. And that’s as it should be. It is only right that all residents have had a chance to have their say and those views are taken notice of. I recently attended a question-and-answer session about devolution on BBC Radio Lincolnshire with mid-morning show presenter Melvyn Prior. On the panel with me were Craig Leyland, the leader of East Lindsey District Council, Martin Hill, the leader of Lincolnshire County Council, and Ric Metcalf, City of Lincoln leader. We had a variety of interesting and searching questions fired at us. We are all agreed that the devolution deal will be good for Greater Lincolnshire, and I hope we were successful in persuading listeners likewise.
If the proposals get the go-ahead they will add up to the biggest shake-up of local government since reorganisation in 1974. In some regards this is even bigger – it will put powers which affect everyone in the hands of local councils acting for the benefit of local people. Some of the new powers, funding and responsibilities requested would provide additional investment for housing and infrastructure. Under the deal an additional £450 million over the next 30 years (£15 million per year) for such investment would be provided. It could also help develop a better approach to skills training provision and criminal justice in the area. These responsibilities are on top of the services already provided by councils in Greater Lincolnshire, which would be unaffected. For now, it is out of our hands. Fingers crossed we get the decision from Government that we want to make life better throughout our area. v There were concerns that existing trade might suffer when the new Marston’s Inn and Tavern pub and restaurant was planned for Swineshead Road, near Old MacDonald’s Farm. But I have it on good authority from the licensed trade that The Chain Bridge has brought new trade for all in that area and all are benefiting from the new business being attracted. Below: BBC Radio Lincolnshire presenter Melvyn Prior makes a point which amuses. The devolution panel, from left, Cllrs Craig Leyland (ELDC), Peter Bedford (BBC), Martin Hill (LCC) and Ric Metcalf (CoL).

Advice
Holiday problems...
F
lights that don’t exist, hotels next to rubbish dumps and cancelled transfers leaving people stranded are just some of the problems that are making people’s holidays a misery this summer, says Citizens Advice. With many families choosing to wait until later in the season to grab a trip away, Citizens Advice Mid Lincolnshire is sharing its top tips for travelling to help people avoid their dream holiday becoming a nightmare. The advice comes as new figures from the national charity reveal a rise in people seeking advice about holiday and travel matters. The Citizens Advice consumer service helped with 9,400 problems with package deals, flights and travel insurance between April 2015 and March 2016, up 9% from
the previous year. Similarly there was an 8% increase in people seeking online help, with advice on solving holiday problems viewed 152,000 times over the same period, up from 141,000 the year before. Common holiday issues reported to the Citizens Advice included poor customer service, deals being misrepresented and breach of contract, where holiday firms promise one thing but deliver another. Issues around breach of contract showed the steepest rise, with 35% more problems reported in comparison to the year before. These included substandard accommodation, people being booked onto flights that didn’t exist and tour operators swapping people’s holidays without offering them a chance to cancel.

CITIZENS ADVICE TOP TIPS FOR SUMMER HOLIDAYS Package holidays v Most holiday providers don’t provide a refund if you cancel. Take out travel insurance from the day you booked the deal. v Tour operators sometimes need to change your holiday before you go. If the change is significant, you don’t have to accept and can ask for a full refund. v All flights, transfers and
accommodation should be as described. If your beach hotel is in the middle of town, complain straight away to a rep. If no alternative is offered, use the tour operator’s complaints procedure to see if you’re entitled to compensation.
or a refund. v If your checked-in luggage is delayed, lost or damaged you may be able to claim on your travel insurance. You can claim compensation straight from the airline but they usually offer less financial compensation.
Flights
Travel insurance
v If you booked a flight that departed from the EU, or arrived in the EU on a European airline, you may be able to claim compensation if your flight is delayed. What you’re entitled to depends on the length of the delay, length of the flight and the reason for the delay. v Wherever you’re flying, if your flight is cancelled, you are entitled to a replacement flight
v Cheap travel insurance can keep your initial costs down but often has high excess charges if you need to claim. Compare the full range of costs. v Make sure your travel insurance covers everything you want to do on holiday. Some policies exclude activities such as watersports or trekking. v Some policies won’t pay out in certain circumstances - like
having an accident while under the influence of alcohol. Read the small print before you buy.
If your travel company or airline goes bust v If your holiday company or airline goes bust but is a member of the Air Travel Organisers’ Licensing (ATOL) then you should be able to get a refund if you haven’t travelled, or be able to finish your holiday without extra costs if you are already there. v There are limited options if it isn’t covered by ATOL but you could try getting money back from your credit or debit company if you paid by card and you’re not offered an alternative option. Or you could see if you’re covered by your travel insurance.

If your child doesn’t have access to a computer or the internet at home, work with teachers to develop appropriate accommodations. • Be available to answer questions and offer assistance, but never do your child’s homework for him or her. • Some children need help organising their homework. Checklists, timers, and parental supervision can help overcome homework problems.
TERRIBLE TWO’S! There’s nothing more embarrassing than your toddler having a tantrum in the supermarket. It’s not easy being two. You want to be independent, but you can’t quite manage that zip; you want juice but mum says it’s teatime; you want to explain something but just don’t have the words yet. The result? A tantrum: screaming, crying, shouting, kicking, throwing things – and a very embarrassed mum if you’re out in public. Dealing with a tantrum The best way to deal with a tantrum is to stay calm and ignore it, which is obviously a lot easier to say than do, especially if you’re in a public place! Your toddler’s meltdown is a cry for attention, so if you can absolutely refuse to give any attention – including shouting or negotiating – then it will die down more quickly. Stay calm and carry on with what
you were doing – chatting to a friend, shopping or whatever – and check to make sure your little one is safe every couple of minutes. Never give in It’s really important never to give in to the demand that caused the tantrum as it will teach them that having a meltdown gets you what you want. That’s a recipe for more tantrums. It’s tempting in the supermarket to say ‘ok, ok, I’ll buy those sweets if you’ll just stop crying and screaming’ just to stop the embarrassment, but stand firm. You may think others are judging you for having a screaming toddler, but they are probably just relieved they’ve passed that stage or have left their kids at home. Most likely they’ll admire your refusal to give in. Once the tantrum is over When your child begins to calm down, talk to them in a low voice, but don’t
16 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk
try to pick them up (unless they are in danger) and reassure your child that they will be fine: “Naming the emotion can also help here. Say, ‘I know you’re angry/upset because X happened, but you’re okay, we’ll sort it out. Mummy is here’.” Don’t try negotiating or reasoning – there’s no point. And don’t punish them after a tantrum, either: move swiftly on and give them lots of positive attention as soon as it’s over, without referring to the tantrum. Give your toddler your full attention and talk to them warmly as if nothing has happened. If you can find ways to notice and reward good behaviour, your little one is more likely to stay calm for longer. How to avoid a tantrum The best way to deal with a tantrum is to avoid it in the first place – sometimes easier said than done. • Are they hungry or tired?
• Try not to rush them all the time, especially when trying to leave the house in the morning. • Are you saying ‘no’ a lot? Sometimes we have to say no (‘no TV now, it’s bedtime’) but check if you’re saying it as an automatic response to their requests because it makes your life easier. If there isn’t a good reason for saying no (‘can I do finger painting?’), find ways to say yes sometimes. • Give them a choice within a choice. So, rather than saying ‘hold my hand when we’re crossing the road please’, say ‘would you like to hold my hand or the buggy?’ • Learn to spot your child’s triggers. Some children have tantrums when they feel anxious, if they’re worried you’re leaving without them, or if their coat zip isn’t quite pulled up to the right level. Deal with the underlying problem to avoid the tantrum.

Riverside Training (Spalding) Ltd
Riverside Training provides specialist childcare training across Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire, Norfolk and Rutland
S
o how does an independent training provider compare with the larger colleges in the area? ‘We are large enough to meet the training requirements of childcare providers,’ explained owner, Suzie Bulbeck, ‘yet we are small enough to care. We can be flexible in how we provide the training, tailoring it to individual needs.’ Clearly, this approach works as their learners achieve outstanding results. Last year, the pass rate across all of their courses was 95%. Riverside Training works closely with local schools and nurseries. They have a training centre in Red Lion Street, Spalding, but also offer bespoke in-house training. There has been a large demand from local childcare companies for this service and this is working successfully within childcare settings across Lincolnshire, Norfolk, Rutland and Cambridgeshire. Riverside Training offers QCF qualifications and Apprenticeships in Children and Young Peoples Workforce, including the new Early Years Educator suite of qualifications, Supporting Teaching &
Learning in Schools and management awards at centres throughout East Anglia and the Midlands. Many of their courses may attract local or national government funding . How can you be certain of the quality of training? Well, CACHE is the national awarding body for children and adult care. In December 2015 they carried out a Quality Assurance and Risk Assessment Inspection and awarded Riverside Training an excellent grade one. In addition to the quality of training, it’s the personal touch that makes Riverside Training so special and this is reflected in the many thank-you letters from individuals and organisations. ‘First-class training for staff.’ This is how Rachel Beresford of Munchkins Kindergarten Ltd spoke of Riverside Training. ‘I first used Riverside Training in 2006 as I needed to gain my Level 3 qualification to open my own day nursery. Suzie and her team supported me so well that I completed this within my time-frame ready for the opening of my nursery, said Rachel. ‘Munchkin’s Kindergarten Ltd has now been successfully
“I first used Riverside Training in 2006 as I needed to gain my Level 3 qualification to open my own day nursery. Suzie and her team supported me so well that I completed this within my time-frame ready for the opening of my nursery...” trading for the last 8 years starting with one building for all our children. In 2010, we had to expand to the next-door property to cope with the demand for places. ‘We have used Riverside Training for all of our apprentices, mature learners and to upgrade qualifications over the last 8 years and have always been totally satisfied with the service both myself as an employer and my learning practitioners receive from them – so much so that I have just completed my Level 5 qualification. Suzie also assists in finding suitable staff for my nursery to meet with the growing demand of qualified people I require for the smooth running of my nursery.’ The demand for qualified childcare workers and teaching assistants has never been greater, so whether you’re an individual looking to gain a new qualification or an employer seeking to train your staff, now’s the time to sign up for a training course with a quality, successful, specialist training provider for all your training.

Shift the Holiday Excess
A
fter the summer of BBQs and Pimms we all start to think about getting back to healthy eating and fitness. Here are our easy tips on how to make small changes in your life: Get rid of the leftovers. Whatever sweets and treats you have left get rid of them! Whether it’s giving them away, freezing them or just throwing them out. The last thing we all need it one more biscuit! Buddy Up. Having Take photos.. support from a Pictures are a great way to see friend, family physical changes, even if you don’t member, co-worker see them on the scales. Take a the at back and or working with photo of front, side start of your journey and a personal trainer then every 4 weeks. can provide that extra
support and accountability to get you going. Set goals that focus on the behaviour rather than the outcome. Instead of setting a goal of losing 5 lbs, set 3 small goals that will lead to the weight loss. For example, doing 3 exercise classes every week, bringing your lunch to work every day, and swapping out your evening snack for a bowl of fruit. Determine your ‘value to change.’ Take a moment to sit down and think about the real reasons this change is important to you and write those things down. When you’re feeling discouraged, which is inevitable for most of us, take a look at that list and remember why it’s important to you. Take it one step at a time. Although high motivation and energy is great, the key here is that you want it to last long-term, not just for a month. A diet that you can only follow for 2-3 weeks isn’t going to make a huge difference in the grand scheme of it all. Each
week pick 1 diet change and incorporate new ones in as you get comfortable with the last. For example, once you get into routine of having a healthy breakfast before leaving the house, then focus on bringing your lunch to work during the week. Attacking it all at once tends to get overwhelming and discouraging when you miss the mark.” Keep an eye on your progress. There are so many great self-monitoring devices, like scales and activity trackers, to keep you informed and accountable. Studies show that just weighing in regularly without any other changes can result in moderate weight loss. In addition, recording everything you eat, whether in an app or written down, can make you a bit more mindful of all the food choices you’re making and help keep your goals at the forefront.
Home Remedies for Luscious Locks Having healthy, shiny, and silky hair is a dream of every woman. Pollution, hair dyes, curlers and straighteners, blow dryers, over-exposure to sun are just some of the factors that take away your hair’s shine and moisture. But you can win this battle with store cupboard ingredients. Olive Oil Rich in vitamin E and antioxidants content present in olive oil help heal damaged hair by sealing the cuticle, with moisture. Olive oil can be used as a hot oil hair treatment to strengthen, add shine and restore moisture to very dry hair. • Put enough olive oil for the length of your hair in a cup or bowl and slightly warm it in a microwave. • Apply the warm oil thoroughly over your scalp and hair shafts. Massage your scalp gently for five to 10 minutes. Cover your hair with a warm towel and leave the oil on overnight, or at least for 30 tives.. minutes. Rinse and Alter naalso use then shampoo and You can , almond oil coconut r oil, jojoba condition. o

Mayonnaise Mayonnaise is an excellent ingredient for treating dry hair at home. It contains lots of protein that will help make your hair soft and shiny. • Measure out one cup of full-fat mayonnaise. Apply a thick layer of it on slightly damp hair and scalp. • Massage the mayonnaise into your scalp and then work it through your hair to the ends. • Cover your hair and head with a plastic cap for about an hour. Rinse and then shampoo and condition.
Eggs Eggs are also very helpful for dry and damaged hair. A good source of protein and lecithin, eggs help strengthen and repair damaged and lifeless hair by adding moisture, shine, and texture to it. • Whip an egg white thoroughly along with two tablespoons of lukewarm water. • Apply the mixture to your damp hair and scalp and massage with your fingertips in a circular motion for
15 minutes. Then shampoo your hair with cool water. Do this once or twice a week, depending on the condition of your hair.
Beer Beer works as an excellent hair conditioner. The protein in beer helps repair damaged hair cuticles and nourish hair follicles, which in turn makes your hair shiny and smooth. • Shampoo your hair as usual and then spray a small amount of beer onto your hair. Allow your hair to dry on its own. When it is dry, your hair will look smooth and shiny. • You can also spray beer onto your hair before blow drying or styling your hair. Note: The smell of beer will not remain on your hair if you let your hair dry naturally.
Bananas Bananas are another excellent ingredient for treating extremely dry and damaged hair. The high potassium and moisture content in bananas prevents split ends, and softens and improves the elasticity of your hair. • Mash one ripe or overripe banana and spread it thoroughly on your hair,
from the roots to the ends. Leave it on for up to an hour and then rinse your hair with lukewarm water. • Alternatively, mix one ripe or overripe banana, one tablespoon of almond oil and two tablespoons of honey. Apply this hair mask on your hair thoroughly. Leave it on for 20 to 30 minutes and then rinse well with lukewarm water.
Vinegar Vinegar helps remove built-up residue left by shampoos and other products, which is one of the main causes of dry hair. Vinegar also helps restore the natural pH level of the scalp and prevents itching and dandruff, two common problems associated with dry hair. • Mix one-half cup of vinegar with one cup of water. Use the solution to rinse your hair after washing it. Allow it to sit for 10 minutes and then rinse it out well. This remedy should be used only once a week. Note: Along with regular vinegar, you can also use apple cider vinegar to treat dry hair.

In a large plan, heat 1 tbsp. of butter (or oil if you prefer) and then crush the garlic cloves and add to the pan. Do this on a low heat for roughly 3 minutes until the garlic has softened. Then, add the chopped tomatoes and the canned tomatoes. Once you have done this, add the sugar, stock and seasoning. Turn up the heat and bring the soup mixture to a simmer. Let it simmer for 10 minutes until the tomatoes have broken down then take off the heat. With a stick blender, whizz the whole mixture together. Add half the sour cream and continue to use to stick blender. Make sure to taste as you go to adjust the seasoning or alternatively add more sugar if you prefer. When it is all blended, serve the soup into bowls.

Let’s get digital! Digital Tax Accounts One feature of the new system is digital tax accounts – both personal and business. Every individual and small business has had access to a digital tax account since April 2016. To access your personal tax account go to https://www.gov.uk/personal-tax-account You can use your personal tax account to: • check your Income tax estimate and tax code • fill in, send and view a personal tax return • claim a tax refund • check and manage your tax credits • check your State Pension • track tax forms that you’ve submitted online • check or update your Marriage Allowance • tell HMRC about a change of address • check or update benefits you get from work, e.g. company car details and medical insurance Many individuals who are currently required to complete a tax return will no longer need to do so and will instead update their digital tax account.
By 2020 the Government have pledged to make tax administration digital with HMRC interacting digitally with all taxpayers
Quarterly Reporting HMRC’s current schedule suggests that from April 2018, businesses, including everyone who is self-employed and those letting out property, will have to update HMRC at least quarterly. This change is likely to require significant adjustments to the internal accounting systems and procedures of many businesses. With approximately 20 months to go, there are still many questions which remain unanswered: • Will quarterly tax payments follow on from quarterly reporting? • What type of data will be reported quarterly? • When will a business’s accountant be given access to a client’s digital tax account? • Will free software be available for smaller businesses and those with less complex tax affairs? • What penalties will be imposed for late quarterly reporting or for inaccurate reports?
At Duncan & Toplis we are monitoring these developments closely to ensure that our clients are kept up to date with HMRC’s digital strategy.
For help and advice in preparing your business for the changes please call Matt Herd on 01205 310250 or email matt.herd@duntop.co.uk

PULL OUT YOUR DEBIT CARD – DO YOU HAVE A WINNER? A debit card reveals where you bank; and mistakes there are a plenty. Do you pay a monthly fee? If so, work out its annual cost (£15/month = £180) and then ask yourself if the ‘extras’ the bank gives are worth this. If not, cancel it. Plus, if you were flogged it or told you had to have it, you may be able to reclaim all packaged bank account fees (see www. mse.me/reclaimpackagefees). Does your bank make you happy? If not, then www.FirstDirect.com is worth considering switching to. It’s a fee-free account (as long as you pay in £1,000 a month), pays switchers £100 and has a linked 6% savings account. It’s won every service poll I’ve ever done, with 92% of its customers rating it ‘great’. Or www. Co-operativeBank.co.uk is giving £150, plus up to £5.50 if you qualify for its Everyday Rewards scheme, and 70% of its customers rate it ‘great’. Are you overdrawn? Debit cards can be debt cards too, and sometimes costlier than credit. For small overdrafts, you can switch again to www.FirstDirect.com which gives a £250 0% overdraft, and the £100 switch bonus will help clear some of it. Or the www.Nationwide.co.uk
FlexDirect gives a 0% overdraft for the first 12 months. For larger amounts, you can use special 0% credit cards to clear it see www.mse.me/moneytransfers Do you have savings? If so, use your bank account to max the interest, as some now pay by far the highest interest on savings. The top picks are www.Santander.co.uk’s 123, which pays 3% on up to £20,000 and www.LloydsBank.com’s ClubLloyds, which pays 4% on £4,000-£5,000. There’s also the www.Tsb.co.uk Classic Plus, which pays 5% on up to £2,000, plus up to £5-a-month cashback on contactless purchases.
2
PULL OUT YOUR PHOTO DRIVING LICENCE – IS IT VALID? A whopping 2.2 million licences have a picture that’s out of date. To check yours, look at section 4b on your photocard licence, it’ll show the expiry date. If you don’t and it’s expired, you risk a fine of up to £1,000. You can renew it online at www. gov.uk/renew-driving-licence or at the post office.
3
3. GOT A CREDIT CARD(S) THAT YOU PAY INTEREST ON? STOP It’s possible to save £100s or even £1,000s a year by getting a 0% balance transfer credit card – that’s where the new card pays off debt on old cards for you, so you owe it instead, but at 0%. This means more of your repayments clear the actual debt rather than just paying the interest, making you debtfree quicker. There’s up to 40 months 0% available with a fee, or 24 months 0% fee-free. My full best balance transfers guide at www. moneysavingexpert.com/bts includes a free eligibility calculator which gives card-by-card odds of which you’re most likely to get – so you can home in on your winner.
Not got a credit card? your’e less protected! Pay using a credit card and you get extra protection under the ‘Section 75 law’ – which means buy something costing between £100 and £30,000 on a credit card, and pay for any of it (even 1p) on it, and the card firm’s jointly liable with the retailer for the entire amount.
This get-out-of-jail-free card is hugely powerful if the retailer goes bust or won’t play fair, as Michelle found. She tweeted: “Successful Section 75 credit card claim, refunded £125 for nondelivery of phone order, used template on your website, thanks.”
PS: If you’ve been burnt with credit cards in the past, or have little financial discipline, then ignore this point. Better safe than sorry.
MARTIN LEWIS
By Martin Lewis @moneysavingex pert
Savings can be huge, as Victoria tweeted me: “I got my fiancé to transfer his credit card balances to a 0%, saved £1,500 interest.”

DO YOU HAVE A DONOR CARD? It’s a big decision, but joining the Organ Donor Register could mean you save or improve up to nine lives. If it’s for you, sign up at www.organdonation.nhs.uk or call 0300 123 23 23.
5
GOT A CREDIT CARD AND ALWAYS REPAY IN FULL? MAKE IT PAY YOU Every time you use a card, the retailer pays the card firm a transaction fee. With a cashback card, you effectively get this put back in your pocket. As new regulations have cut these fees recently, cashback’s been cut too, yet Amex cards are mostly exempted, so still pay a good whack. The fee-free www.AmericanExpress. com Everyday pays 5% cashback (max £100) for the first three months, then tiered up to 1.25% after. The best non-Amex is http://money.asda.com Mastercard which pays 0.5% cashback (1% in Asda). As Anna tweeted me: “@MartinSLewis Glad I read about Amex cashback card: I’ll get over £200 paid.” Yet only do this if you’ll set up a direct debit to repay IN FULL each month or you’ll pay 22.9% (Amex) or 18.9% (Asda) rep APR interest, which more than wipes the cashback gain.

Fiat Tipo
All things considered... the all-new Fiat Tipo is mediocre to drive and its cabin quality isn’t the best. But it does look good; it has bags of room; it’s comfortable and it comes loaded with kit. So even though 2016’s Fiat Tipo has a few negative points, it still represents good value for money.
1.6 Multijet II 120
Driven: Turin, Italy
I
have a soft spot for Fiat. Okay, I’m mean to be objective – but you always remember your first car, right? And mine was a Fiat Panda. There’s no logic involved here – it’s pure emotion – and so, for me, the Fiat brand is synonymous with 1988 and my glorious first days of true motoring independence. The same year I got that Panda, a new Fiat was unleashed – the Tipo. The five-door hatch was boxy but appealed to the media and the masses, winning the European Car of the Year award in 1989. Sadly, the adoration didn’t last and the Fiat Tipo went to the great scrapyard in the sky when it was replaced by the Fiat Bravo and Brava in ‘95. But Fiat may well have been listening to The Stone Roses at some point – particularly the track ‘I Am The Resurrection’. This title must have become stuck somewhere in the spirit of Fiat because here we are today with a brand new Fiat Tipo for 2016. Yes, the car is back from the dead and aims to replicate the early success of the former model. If truth be told, the Fiat Tipo is no stranger to being brought back to life – the moniker was first seen on cars over 100 years ago. And in 2016, Fiat is determined to keep the name going again by going down the Daciaesque value-for-money route. The Italian auto-maker is blunt about its intentions: the all-new Fiat Tipo is a car without frills and, even though it’s more or less emulating Dacia’s marketing strategy, its real competitor is the likes of the Skoda Rapid Spaceback. Now, I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but the all-new Fiat Tipo is, in my opinion, better looking than the Czech-made car. This is due to its elegant nose design, and neater overall shape. The Fiat Tipo’s price begins from a remarkably low £12,995 on the road, which is bound to shake up the British motoring market. The fresh Fiat Tipo is hitting our shores in September in fivedoor hatchback and ‘Station Wagon’ (estate) guises. The body forms are indistinguishable from the rear doors forward and the outside 26 | SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk
PROS ‘N’ CONS ➠ ➠ ➠ ➠ of the Tipo really doesn’t ooze ‘budget’ by any means. It’s only when you step inside that the ‘no frills’ element kicks-in. Some of the all-new Fiat Tipo’s switchgear is from the Fiat 500 range’s parts bin – as is the steering wheel. These components of the car feel good to the touch – it’s the plastics at knee-height on the doors and the dash that give the game away. The synthetic material is so cheap that it sounds hollow and scratches if you run your fingernails lightly over it. But, as with many things in life, there’s light and shade – and the Fiat Tipo’s factory-fitted kit tips the car back into the good books. All 2016 Fiat Tipo models receive six airbags, electric windows, DAB digital radio, USB and Bluetooth connectivity. We tested the flagship ‘High’ trim version (equivalent to Fiat’s ‘Lounge’ spec) of the Fiat Tipo hatchback at its launch in Turin. Equipment at this level includes sat-nav with TomTom LIVE services, climate control, a rear view camera and 17-inch alloy wheels - pushing the price-tag up to £17,995. The car we drove came with Fiat’s well-known 120hp 1.6-litre Multijet II diesel power unit - but the range also offers the choice of a 1.3-litre oil-burner and 1.4 and 1.6-litre petrol engines. Behind the wheel, it’s evident that the all-new Fiat Tipo has been put together so that it delivers comfort over everything else. Turin’s pot-hole ridden roads were a walkin-the-park for the Tipo hatchback – its soft suspension enabling the car to sail over them without any discomposure in the cabin. Point the all-new Fiat Tipo’s nose into a corner rapidly, though, and body roll is perceptible. The well-weighted steering helps to make up for this slightly, but it still doesn’t make you feel as connected with the tarmac as you’d First Drive Review by Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist Twitter: @carwriteups

Price: £17,995 like to be. From a power point of view, the all-new Fiat Tipo’s 1.6-litre oil-burning unit is nothing exceptional, but the car’s six-speed manual transmission impresses with its positive-shift action. In lower gears lag is obvious and, while it’s a quiet cruiser, things become rowdy from 3,000rpm onwards. It tugs well, though, once that rev range is reached and is swift enough for the class of car. Its carbon dioxide emissions of 98g/km are just below the Skoda Rapid Spaceback, which in 1.6 TDI CR 115 SE Tech guise emits 99g/km of CO2. Pricing is similar - the Skoda being just £675 cheaper at £17,320. The all-new Fiat Tipo gets things right again when it comes to room. It’s even lengthier than a far more expensive Volkswagen Golf, so legroom is bountiful for rear seat occupants. The slanting roofline cuts into head space a little at the back, but this will only concern passengers over 6ft tall. The hatchback’s loadarea is seriously decent, too - class leadingly so at 440 litres. In real-world terms, that’s more than enough space for the weekly shop and a couple of toddlers’ buggies.
