Welcome

to the April issue This feels very strange for me to be saying but this will be my last welcome for a few months as I am due to have a few months off on maternity leave. I know I am leaving the magazine in the very capable hands of Vicky, however this has been my baby for over 7 years and will be difficult to not live and breathe all things Simply for a few months! I have definitely planned things right with a summer baby, so I am looking forward to some time off in the sunshine. This issue is one of my favourites of the year as it is full of excitement for the summer months, with the warm weather teasing us and the clocks going forward it won’t be long until we are relegating boots to the back of the wardrobe and pulling out the flip flops. So, I will be back later in the year to update you on my news and will be back working from the Autumn. Have a great summer!

Please help the local community stay vibrant by supporting local businesses - and don’t forget to mention SIMPLY SPALDING when calling or buying a product from an advertiser you have seen in the magazine! Without the loyalty of our advertisers we would not be able to deliver such a great magazine to you every month.

Aside from Mother’s Day, my favourite day of March falls on the last Sunday when the clocks go forward. Lighter evenings, Spring weather and the distinct feeling that Summer is on its way! And then it’s into April and Easter and all the fun associated with it. Spring is definitely my favourite season! Within the issue Spring is very much in the air with articles on Easter, gardening and days out. We also consider what to do with our furry friends when going on holiday and where to start if you are able to rehome an animal who is looking for their forever home. Enjoy the issue.

Holbeach town band music cafe On Saturday 11th April between 1pm and 3pm, Holbeach Town Band will open its doors to the general public as they host their first Music Café. Everyone is welcome whether you’re 7 or 70, an accomplished player or beginner, even if you fancy just popping along for a biscuit and a brew. The Band have regular Open Days, but this will be their very first Music Café. Band Chairman, Yvonne Butter, commented “You meet so many great people in the brass band world and have a tremendous amount of fun along the way. Pop along on Saturday 11th April and see for yourself.” The Music Café will start at 1pm at the W.I. Hall in Holbeach and there will be a chance to meet members of the Holbeach Town Band and the Holbeach Victoria Training Band and see them perform. Players will give demonstrations of their instruments throughout the afternoon and it wouldn’t be a music café without giving you the chance to grab a cuppa and a cake (or two!). The band also provide our members with an instrument, so you may even end up taking one home with you!

New council tax scheme Too much month left at the end of your money? Why not make it easier on yourself and spread the load.A new campaign to help South Holland residents manage their Council Tax payments with ease is being launched. The council want to do all they can to help and that’s why they are giving you the option to spread your instalments over 12 monthly payments instead of 10. Making the switch could see your monthly outgoings substantially reduced and will put your Council Tax payments in line with other bills – such as your gas, electricity and TV licence. For residents who live in band A or B properties, the scheme could reduce monthly payments between £16 and £19, while for band C homes the reduction could be £21 or more. Cllr Gary Porter, leader of South Holland District Council, said: “We understand that not everyone likes paying their Council Tax over 10 months. So we want to give them the chance to do it over 12. For full details about the scheme or to sign up email 12not10@sholland.gov.uk

Animal Management student jets off for an Internship in Italy. Ex-HND in Animal Management student Rosie Drew from Spalding has been offered an Internship to work with hummingbirds and exotics such as flamingos in Northern Italy. Rosie studied with New College Stamford since leaving school and once finishing her studies pursued her passion for animals by becoming an Animal Care Technician at the College. With over 150 different animals in our Animal Care department Rosie was able to experience caring for a huge range of species. She said “When I applied for the role in Italy they told me that my CV was brilliant and they couldn’t wait to transfer my knowledge. My employer recognised my broad range of experience with animals and that is thanks to the colleges excellent resources – others don’t

have such a range of species on site." From receiving her first breeding incubator at only 11 years old, Rosie has always been keen to care for animals but didn’t realise she could have a career out of something she loved! Now she has just that. Vocational training in impressive facilities provides students with the real skills they need to progress into their dream jobs, allowing them to reach their potential whilst learning about something they love, just like Rosie did. If you love animals and this sounds like something you would be interested in find out more information about the courses at our open evening on Thursday 26th February, visit www.stamford.ac.uk or call 01780 484 311.

Queensgate plants a forest for Peterborough Queensgate Shopping Centre was thrilled to be supporting the Forest for Peterborough by attending its tree planting day on Wednesday 25 February. Volunteers from the Queensgate management team donned their wellington boots and gardening gloves to help Forest for Peterborough with its ambitious plans to plant one tree for every person living in Peterborough by 2030, in order to create spaces for people and wildlife to flourish. The initiative, developed by the charity Peterborough Environment City Trust, aims to create a network of wooded areas to improve Peterborough’s green spaces and air quality, as well as ensuring the city is prepared

for the anticipated new homes to be built over the next six years. Trees are distributed across the city, in areas such as parks, playing fields, farms, and rural green spaces. Queensgate’s Environmental Manager, Carol Wakelin, will be heading up the team of volunteers. Throughout the day, the group will plant around 200 saplings which will be nurtured for 15 years, at which time they will be fully established. Carol commented: “The team and I are really excited for the tree planting day; we’re all ready to join in and make a difference to the local area. By planting these trees and supporting Forest for Peterborough, we are making sure our city doesn’t

lose vital green areas which are so important for both the environment and the people that live here.” Simon Belham, Forest for Peterborough’s Project Officer, said: “We are delighted that the Queensgate team has given their support to the Forest for Peterborough Project by joining one of our planting days. This day will help to improve the natural learning area at the East of England Showground for school children. Queensgate’s assistance will make a vital difference to the environmental landscape of the city and its surrounding areas, and will move us one step closer to our goal of planting 180,000 trees by 2030.”

Thorpe Hall – your local fundraisers Kirsty Clipston is the fundraiser working with supporters from across south Lincolnshire to raise money for Thorpe Hall Hospice. Kirsty is one of a team of fundraisers working at the Sue Ryder hospice to help raise the £6 million needed to build the hospice’s new in patient unit. She has special responsibility for looking after people raising money for Thorpe Hall in Spalding and the surrounding villages – a key area of support. Kirsty said: “The people in this area have historically been incredibly generous with their time, efforts and money. We’ve had people biking the length of the country, swimming lakes, shaving their heads, dressing down, baking – you name it they’ve done it! “My job is to support all those people to

make sure they have everything they need to raise as much money as possible for our appeal.” Kirsty, a mum of three, is no stranger to the area – in fact, she’s Stamford born and bred. The former Casterton Community College (now Business Enterprise College) pupil, Kirsty worked at the town’s branch of estate agents Bairstow Eves for a number of years. She said: “A good friend works at Thorpe Hall and has always spoken about the great work done at the hospice. Another friend’s mum was cared for at Thorpe Hall and she

always says Thorpe Hall gave her her mum back for those precious final days. My husband running the London Marathon to raise money for Sue Ryder was the spur that finally made me get involved. I wanted to make a difference too.” If you’re interesting in holding an event to raise money for Thorpe Hall Hospice, joining in a Sue Ryder challenge, volunteering or just finding out more about how you can get involved do get in touch with Kirsty. Cowbit St Mary Church wins Heritage Lottery Fund support Cowbit St Mary’s has received £8,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) for an exciting project to conserve and communicate the heritage of the 14th Century Cowbit St Mary and its clock. The project, led by volunteers from the local community, will repair and improve the clock in the church tower and communicate the heritage of the church to the local community. The work will start very soon and the project will be completed by the end of 2015. The grant will allow vital repairs to be carried out to the clock and belfry floor. It will enable new and existing volunteers to undertake research visits to relevant projects, exhibitions and institutions and to work with the National Association of Decorative & Fine Arts Societies (NADFAS) and local school children to develop church trails. This learning will be shared with a wider audience via a display and workshop. A clock commemoration event is planned at the end of the project. The official project launch will be held at Cowbit St Mary on Saturday the 11th April starting at 14:30. There will be an opportunity to meet and share memories of Cowbit and the church. The highlight of the afternoon will be a talk by Darlah and Steve Thomas on the famous manufacturer of the clock (J

B Joyce of Whitchurch, Shropshire). The Grade I listed Cowbit Saint Mary's, founded by the Prior of Spalding in 1384, is an important local landmark at the centre of the fenland village of Cowbit. Since the opening of the much needed A16 bypass, the last pub in Cowbit, dating back to the 1500s, has been lost to arson and visitors to the village have greatly reduced. Despite a strong campaign from the villagers, the pub site will now be developed for housing. The clock project is planned as the first of many initiatives to help revive the village, the quality of life for residents and to communicate the Cowbit heritage before it is lost to future generations. Commenting on the award, Dr Shirley Pugh said: “We are thrilled to have received the support of the Heritage Lottery Fund and are confident the project will ensure the long term future of the clock and help attract visitors back to this historic landmark. Vanessa Harbar, Head of HLF East Midlands, said: “The historic St Mary’s Church is the focal point of the Cowbit community and an important local Lincolnshire landmark. The Heritage Lottery Fund’s investment to restore its clock and belfry floor is a vital first step in reviving interest in the church and strengthening the sense of community within the village.

No zero food hygiene ratings Great news for food lovers in South Holland – there are currently no takeaways or restaurants in the district with the lowestranked Food Hygiene rating. Following inspections, two Long Sutton eateries which previously had a zero ranking (urgent improvement necessary) have seen their ratings boosted. Food Hygiene ratings tell you about the hygiene standards in restaurants and are usually displayed on green and black stickers at the premises – the higher the score, the better the food hygiene procedures. Within South Holland there are currently (as of 5/02/15) 625 Food Premises that have been rated. Of the premises:299 are rated 5 (increase of 18 since Nov14) 176 are rated 4 (drop of 7 since Nov 14)) 125 are rated 3 (no change since Nov 14) 12 are rated 2 (drop of 1 since Nov 14) 13 are rated 1 (drop of 2 since Nov 14) 0 are rated 0 (drop of 1 since Nov 14) (NB not all premises are required to be rated under the national rating scheme). For more information about Food Hygiene ratings or to check the rankings of local business visit www.ratings.food.gov.uk.

Carpentry students build shelter for WW2 Veteran's mobility scooter Construction students studying Carpentry, Electrical Installation and Bricklaying have recently been working together to complete a Community Project for a WW2 veteran in Stamford. Their remit was to design and build a shed for a Mr Rudkin who resides local to the College campus in Stamford. The shed is to house his mobility scooter securely overnight in a space directly beneath his first floor flat. Three students from the College’s popular Carpentry and Joinery course – James Breakall, Patrick Mills and Kieran Young, felt confident to take on the challenge and have built the shelter from scratch with help from their tutor Tom Conway. An excellent example of the skills being demonstrated by the Carpentry students. Support from the College’s Electrical

Installation students also means the shed will have an electrical supply fitted in order that the scooter can be charged up each night, and a firm ground, once Bricklaying students have also concreted slabs for the shed to sit on.

Face of Rooke’s Calendar raises £768 for Wood Green, The Animals Charity Rooke’s Pet Products, based in Spalding, today handed over a cheque for £768 to Wood Green, The Animals Charity from the sale of their 2015 Face of Rooke’s Calendar. The Face of Rooke’s competition, a popular annual event, sees customers enter photos of their gorgeous pets in the hope of winning the highly desired title and discount card. This year, the 13 finalists became the stars of a calendar which was sold in aid of the Charity. Jason Rooke, Managing Director at Rooke’s said, “We’ve been blown away by the popularity of the calendar and support for Wood Green, The Animals Charity. These things are tricky to plan for; you never know how many you will sell. But the results speak for themselves and it’s great to support such a worthy cause” The Calendars have been on sale in Rooke’s Spalding store, Wood Green’s charity shop in the town centre as well as at their 6 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

As one of the leading animal welfare organisations in the UK, Wood Green The Animals Charity has been in operation since 1924, helping animals of all shapes and sizes to find their loving forever home. Katja Jones, Corperate Relations Fundraising Officer says, “All animals deserve a happy life. At Wood Green, The Animals Charity, we take in unwanted and lost animals, provide shelter and care and find them secure and loving homes. This work cannot be carried out without the aid of our donors and volunteers. It is wonderful to see the support offered through the sale of this calendar and we are incredibly grateful to everyone who has purchased one.” Plans are underway for the return of Face of Rooke’s 2015 later this Spring, with the 2016 charity calendar following in the Autumn.

Over 200 tonnes of rubbish cleared Over 200 tonnes of rubbish – the equivalent of 30 adult Elephants - has been cleaned up across the district as part of our Pride in South Holland campaign. Litter and fly-tipping which blighted alleyways, footpaths, roadsides and verges has been blitzed by our dedicated street sweeping team in recent weeks. They’ve retrieved a variety of items including car tyres, bags full of rubbish and even a bath! Earlier this year we announced that a new street sweeping machine had joined our ranks and along with our two permanent vehicles aimed to ensure that as many small towns and villages are cleaned as possible. So far the teams have travelled all over South Holland clearing litter from Crowland, Cowbit, Deeping St Nicholas, Donington, Holbeach, Surfleet, Sutton Bridge and Long Sutton as well as heading along the A16 and A17 to clean up roundabouts and traffic islands. They will continue to scour the district over the coming weeks. Last week community payback teams tidied areas in Spalding including Low

Road, Queens Road and the Enterprise Way Industrial estate. Cllr Roger Gambba Jones, portfolio holder for waste management, said: “The Pride in South Holland campaign has made a positive and noticeable impact across the district. “We are also working hard to prevent fly-tipping and littering. Our environmental enforcement officer has been very busy familiarising himself and dealing with our hotspots and the number of reported flytipping incidents in December was half what we expected.” The Pride in South Holland campaign was launched last year, to target eyesore sites across the district and has already made a big difference. With the former Bull and Monkie pub in Spalding cleaned up, other sites are now being actively targeted. Over the coming weeks, as the weather improves, the campaign will also see play equipment across the district repainted. To report an incident of fly-tipping in South Holland call 01775 761161 or visit www.sholland.gov.uk/doitonline

Council Tax cut again Another cut to the district council share of the Council Tax bill was unanimously agreed by South Holland District Councillors last night. This is the fourth year in a row that South Holland councillors have agreed to reduce their portion of the Council tax bill and continues their pledge to protect hard working people and the services they rely on across the district. South Holland District Council is one of only half a dozen councils in the country to deliver year-on-year reductions in Council Tax, which when added to the freeze introduced in 2010 means a real terms cut for South Holland residents of 16% over the last five years. "Our commitment to easing the burden on hard working people is stronger than ever, despite the challenging financial climate with constant pressure to make cuts," said council leader Cllr Gary Porter, who points to a number of key savings being made. "Back in 2010 we created a company to deliver greater efficiency of some back office services. The joint initiative with East Lindsey District Council saved a combined £10 million at the end of its fourth year. “Add to this the £550k we are saving every year by sharing senior management with Breckland Council and you can see how our careful financial management means we are able to retain services such as the weekly refuse collection our residents value so much, and still cut our share of the Council Tax for the fourth year in row." The council has also just launched ‘12not10’, a new scheme aimed at reducing people’s monthly outgoings by allowing them to request Council Tax instalment payments over 12 months instead of 10. “We will not waiver in our commitment to give hard working people in South Holland the best deal possible," added Cllr Porter. "Our budget and the efficiency savings we are making means next year South Holland Council is able to keep providing the wide range of services our residents so rightly demand."

Magna Carta may be 800 years old, but even King John would have been surprised to learn that some of its clauses are still relevant today. Among other clauses (63 in total), it meant that the King could no longer impose taxes on his people without the consent of the Barons (which evolved into today’s House of Lords) and later through a Parliament which became the House of Commons. Hence today we get the Queen’s Speech which sets out her government’s programme, including taxes. The Great Charter, as it was known, aimed to limit the power of the monarchy, leading to the democratic society we live in today. Magna Carta was created as a solution to the political issues of the time. Now it is of particular relevance yet again with The General and Local Elections on May 7th. Magna Carta has been proclaimed the greatest constitutional document of all time, placing England’s sovereigns under the rule of law for the first time and is now widely regarded as the foundation of democracy. It was first issued in 1215, then reissued in 1216, 1217(Charter of the Forest, protecting the rights of the common man) and finally in 1225. Lincoln Castle has both the 1215 original and the Charter of the Forest in its new Magna Carta Vault

which will open to the public on April 1st. Magna Carta is about freedom and liberty and has been cited around the world in constitutional charters from America and India to New Zealand and South Africa. Phrases first drafted from the charter of 1215 heavily influenced the 1628 Petition of Right, the 1789 Declaration of the Rights of Man and most recently the 1948 United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The main clauses relevant to today are parts of clause 1 (freedom for the church) and clauses 39 and 40, which state, “ No free man will be taken or imprisoned or outlawed or exiled or in any way ruined, nor shall we go or send against him, save by the lawful judgement of his peers and / or by the law of the land. To no one shall we deny or delay right or justice.” We only have to look at the world news on a daily basis to see the dire and deeply shocking consequences when freedom and democracy fails. When we near an election, as we are now, debates get heated, passions rise and things said that are often regretted later, political parties have very differing views, but it is you, the electorate that have the final say. That is what democracy is about – long live Magna Carta!

Suicide! Would you be able to ask the question “Are you thinking of suicide?”

One in 20 people at any one time in Britain are having thoughts of suicide and Lincolnshire figures have been higher than the national average. As ASIST Lead for Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, Rita Blackler is determined to help save lives... “We want to spread increased suicide awareness throughout the county, particularly in areas where there has been a high suicide rate. As a county we are working really hard with lots of organisations coming together to bring the suicide figures for Lincolnshire right down. People are often frightened to ask if someone is having thoughts of suicide as they fear they won’t know how to help if the answer is “Yes!” The majority of people who take their own lives don’t actually want to die they just want to be free of the pain and situation they are in. The more we talk about suicide, the more we can affect change. If the stigma and the taboo can be reduced, people at risk will hopefully talk to someone about their feelings and will find reasons to stay alive. There is often a lot of shame and guilt

attached to suicide because people feel they could or should have spotted the signs and done something to help, especially when it’s someone close to them”. If you would like to be ready, willing and able to save a life please consider enrolling on one of our courses: ASIST: A two consecutive-day training course teaching ‘suicide first aid’ to keep someone safe. safeTalk: A three and a half hour suicide awareness course.

To find out more about either of these courses which are free for those who live or work in Lincolnshire please contact the ASIST administrator Maureen Toogood by calling 01529 416251 or email Maureen.Toogood@LPFT.nhs.uk

Advice

House sale ❱ BY LISA BARWELL

Tender process Some estate agents have introduced a practice of selling a property by a tender process. Buyers view the property at an open day and submit offers through sealed bids. Usually as part of the process, the buyer agrees with the agent to pay the agent’s commission fee. The seller is charged a small marketing fee or no fee. The sale by tender process is not illegal but can be confusing for both the buyer and seller if an agent is not clear about the process. There are pros and cons for both the seller and buyer if they decide to use the tender process. The Property Ombudsman (TPO) has produced useful guidance on the sale by tender process which is available on its website at www.tpos.co.uk.

Finding a buyer yourself If you wish to find a buyer yourself, you must first decide what price you want to ask for the property. Many estate agents do free valuations so it is always possible to arrange for two or more local estate agents to provide this information. If you want a formal valuation, you could arrange for an estate agent to provide this but you would have to pay a fee. Before deciding on a price, you may wish to consider:l doing any repairs or decorating if this would make it easier to sell the house l arranging for a survey if you think there are any major problems that might affect the value of the house, for example, a roof in a bad state of repair. You should also decide in advance if you are prepared to include any extras in the sale, for example, curtains and carpets. These are known as fittings. A price for these

can be included in the asking price or a separate price can be asked in addition. There are some items that you must sell as part of the house unless you make it clear to the buyer that such items are not included in the sale. These are known as fixtures and include such items as fireplaces and a central heating system. However, in some cases it is not always clear whether something is a fixture or fitting so it would be useful for you to draw up a list of any items you intend to remove or are prepared to sell to avoid problems later. It is normal practice for a potential buyer to offer a lower price for the house than the seller is asking.

If you wish to use an estate agent If you wish to use an estate agent, you should find out about local estate agents and find out the following information:l what type of property the estate agent

specialises in l how much the estate agent will charge l the reputation of the local estate agencies, if possible. Estate agents must comply with laws that protect consumers from unfair sales and marketing practices. Nearly all estate agents calculate their fees as a percentage of the final selling price. You should also check if the following are included in this percentage fee or have to be paid for in addition:l advertising costs l costs of preparing details of the house including photographs l a ‘For Sale’ board l VAT. If you decide to use an estate agent, the estate agent must confirm the charges and rate of commission that will be made. The estate agent must do this when they agree to act for you.

School News

Calling teachers, PTA members, pupils… Do you have exciting news at your school? If you would like to share your school news with the local residents please send details to editor@simplyspalding.co.uk

Spalding Monkshouse Primary School We have had quite a busy time with many activities and themes going on. The children in Nursery really enjoying their topic on stories relating to food. They made some healthy rainbow fruit kebabs and pizzas. They even made and tried to toss some pancakes, (several landed on the floor!) before trying them with different fillings. KS1 children, who are learning all about Africa, had an African Day. A visitor came into school to talk all about his journeys in Africa and the animals and people he encountered on his travels. The children then made couscous, choosing the fruit and vegetables that they wanted to use.

Children in KS1 and KS2 competed in an annual gym competition at Holbeach and Fenland gym club in Long Sutton. All of the children performed to the best of their ability and we were very proud of them all. Children in Year 4 held their own ‘Premiere Evening’ which was a great success. Everybody, including teachers and parents, came in their best clothes and walked down the red carpet. The film was an amazing production which was made by Miss Harris’ class and staff from Enrich IT. During ‘Take one Picture’ week, Lower Key Stage 2 focussed on mosaics. Their original piece was a

Ayscoughfee Hall School It has been a busy time for the children at Ayscoughfee Hall School. The School celebrated the joy of reading by dressing up as their favourite book characters to commemorate World Book Day. The children and teachers looked fantastic in costumes ranging from Pingu to Ratty from The Wind in the Willows. The Year 1 class loved performing “The Gruffalo” in their class assembly and all spoke out well and performed beautifully in front of the whole school and proud parents. The Junior Police Cadet scheme is being well supported by the school, embracing community responsibility and respect. Our Junior PCSOs, Abigail Hodgett and Amy Naylor, with encouragement and input from Spalding Police, led an excellent anti-bullying assembly and poster campaign.

There has been much activity on the sports field over recent weeks. The junior children competed in the local schools cross country event and returned with two trophies. The Year 5 and 6 girls’ team and Year 3 and 4 boys both won their events with the Year 3 and 4 girls coming a close second. In the Spalding schools netball tournament, the A team were successful in winning the plate trophy. The hockey tournament was competitively fought but with no trophies won on this occasion. Football fixtures were enjoyed against Grantham Prep School and netball against The Peterborough School. Finishing on the subject of healthy exercise, the whole school enjoyed participating in Zumba dance taster sessions, with a view to this being added to the School’s wide range of after school clubs.

Spalding Parish CofE Day School Children were delighted to become published poets in the Young Writers, Monster Poetry Competition. The successful poems were selected on the basis of imagination, expression, interpretation of poetry, use of language and description. It was a fun competition that inspired and motivated them. They used a range of language features to write their own narrative poems based on the ‘Monster Theme’. The children are now looking forward to seeing their poems in print, in the Regional Anthology. 14 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

Roman Mosaic and they looked at the different shades, tones and textures of the piece. They then went on to research different mosaics and started to look at more modern pieces. Finally they were ready to design and make their own mosaic.

Wisbech Grammar School A multicultural music workshop has given pupils at Wisbech Grammar School’s preparatory school a chance to try their hand at a string of exotic instruments. During a visit by world music specialists ‘Earthsong’ the pupils at Magdalene House Preparatory School enjoyed a melodic jaunt across the continents, getting hands on experience of djembe goblet drums and kora harps from West Africa, as well as Indian sitars and Chinese harps. Director of music Marie Cunningham said: “The pupils listened to traditional stories and songs from many different cultures, and we even started the Chinese new year celebrations early with a dragon dance, which was great fun for all of us.”

The Stranger

Adult book choice

Events in April at Spalding Libraries

Harlan Coben

The Stranger appears out of nowhere, perhaps in a bar or a parking lot or at the grocery store. His identity is unknown. His motives are unclear. His information is undeniable. Then he whispers a few words in your ear and disappears, leaving you picking up the pieces of your shattered world. Adam Price has a lot to lose: a comfortable marriage to a beautiful woman, two wonderful sons, and all the trappings of the American dream: a big house, a good job, a seemingly perfect life. Then he runs into the Stranger. When he learns

a devastating secret about his wife, Corinne, he confronts her, and the mirage of perfection disappears as if it never existed at all. Soon Adam finds himself tangled in something far darker than even Corinne's deception and realizes that if he doesn't make exactly the right moves, the conspiracy he's stumbled into will not only ruin lives - it will end them. Caravan & Camping

Buying a caravan and camping equipment What’s not to love about the great outdoors? A caravan or tent can give you huge flexibility over where you stay and when you go away

“Pop-up tents - for those who don’t like the idea of taking time to put up a tent, simply take it out of its case and throw.”

I

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

f you are thinking about buying a caravan you have two choices – buying new or buying second hand. They are different processes but both can leave you with a fantastic caravan which will give you pleasure for many years to come. Buying new As with buying second hand the first thing you will need to do is to decide on a budget. If you have never owned a caravan before there are quite a few extras which you may need to buy so make sure you have some flexibility with your figures. Also consider ongoing costs such as insurance and maintenance. Once you have arrived at your figure the next thing to do is to match the caravan to the car which will tow it. Your caravan should weigh no more than 85% of the kerb weight of your car. If you’re not sure of the numbers then your car manufacturer can give you a weight. Then think about how the caravan has to match your needs. What will you be using it for? How many people will be using it and how many berths will you need? Dealerships are all very well but if you can visit a caravan show as you will get to see all of the different makes and models available in the same place which should allow you to be able to compare them more easily. You should then start to have an inkling as to which you prefer. And while we are talking about dealers, make sure you buy from a reputable source. Your local dealer will be able to advise you on handling, servicing, finance and warranties. They will also be able to make sure you have taken all you need into account – if you are new to caravanning there may be something you haven’t considered. Once you have made your purchase it is advisable to join a club – The Caravan Club or The Caravan and Camping Club which will give you access to sites, insurance and breakdown cover as well as giving advice. Buying Second Hand As with buying new you need to decide on your budget as well as considering your ongoing costs. One of the main things to bear in mind with a second hand caravan is that if you are not buying through a dealer you will not have any protection should there be any problems with the caravan. When you go to view a caravan make sure you inspect it in daylight and take your time to do it properly as there are many parts of a caravan which aren’t immediately

18 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

accessible that can hide signs of wear and tear. Check for damp, check doors and windows, check the chassis and running gear (the hitch, suspension, corrosion on the chassis), check the jockey wheel winds up and down easily and roatates freely. Also check the electrics and gas – use a professional if you need to. Ask up front what is included in the sale. Items such as leisure batteries, battery chargers, gas bottles, electric hook-ups, hitch locks and TV equipment can always be negotiated. If you are able to negotiate for an awning or get it included in the price then do - an awning can be an expensive additional cost. Check the history and get an HPI check. Find out the distances the caravan has travelled and, most importantly, that the address of the seller and the address on the caravan’s registration document match. Camping If camping is more your thing then there are several types of tent to choose from and the best tent for you will depend on your type of usage: Pop-up tents – for those who don’t like the idea of taking time to put up a tent, simply take it out of its case and throw. Festival tents – cheap and cheerful and designed for weekends away. Just make sure there is a built in porch for muddy wellies! Family tents – the scope here is huge. Designed for families from a 3 berth to a 10 berth plus, family tents tend to have large living areas and several bedrooms. You can also buy tent carpets for these as well as footprints to reduce wear and tear. Backpacking tents – these tend to be much smaller in size and lighter in weight to other tents to make them easy to fit into a backpack. They are also a different shape to other tents as they have been designed to cope with the challenges of being pitched in the open.

Pet Holidays

Holidays for your Dog It’s the time of year when we are all planning our holidays, but what about our furry friends?

"If you are thinking of travelling to France or Spain then Brittany Ferries have a PETS Travel Scheme..."

S

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN mall animals and goldfish aren’t too difficult to cater for as friends and family can look after them but what if you have a dog? Well there are several options to ensure that you both have a good week

away. The most popular option is a boarding kennel. There are many high quality boarding kennels in the area which are dedicated to providing your dog with a stress-free week away from home. If you have never used one then arrange to visit to make sure you are happy with the facilities. When you go, make sure they are fully insured as well as having any extras which are important to you such as heating. Also ask about the opportunities for your dog to go for walks and exercise to make sure they will not be inside all day. Make sure you have your dog’s vaccination certificates to hand as a boarding kennel will need to see this before they can accept your dog. If you are not keen on boarding kennels you have the option of Home Boarding. This is where your dog goes to stay with another family. The benefit here is that your dog can feel comfortable in a home environment, especially if they don’t get along too well with other dogs. As with boarding kennels make sure you visit beforehand and take your dog so they can become familiar

with their holiday destination. If you’re not keen on that either you can take advantage of Dog Sitting, where someone stays at your home and takes care of your dog. Make sure you do your homework on this one as some dog sitters will not be there during the day whereas others will so make sure what is included in their fee. Dog sitting will mean your dog won’t need a change of scenery for your dog and they can keep all of their creature comforts to hand. If your dog is used to the finer things in life then you could try Doggy hotels or doggy spas. These luxury venues keep your pooches pampered and preened in relaxing surroundings. Be prepared to pay well for it though and be ready to come home to a dog who is more refreshed than you! If you really don’t like the thought of leaving your dog then why not take your dog with you? There are many holiday lets in the UK which are pet friendly. Or you could even look beyond the UK. If you are thinking of travelling to France or Spain then Brittany Ferries have a PETS Travel Scheme which allows you to take your dog with you. You will need a DEFRA approved passport (showing that your dog has been microchipped and has been vaccinated against rabies).

IN ASSOCIATION WITH

Pets Corner

Run Rabbit Run! We all know that exercise is good for us, but it’s important to remember that it’s good for our pets too. Obesity leads to illness, and illness leads to vet bills Cats Cats are notoriously lazy. Unless your puss is an avid hunter, they may spend all day just eating and sleeping. This inactivity can lead to obesity. Try playing with toys such as laser pens, fishing poles, towers, or anything with catnip as it stimulates playfulness. A cardboard box is a good option too. You can even buy swimming fish apps created especially for your cat to pounce on. Cut down on your cat’s food if they just won’t move

Unless they are ill, all pets need to move around, stretch their legs, and exercise every day. Some are enthusiastic about the prospect, whereas others need encouragement! Let’s take a look at methods of pet exercise now that spring is on its way. Dogs A walk is the obvious option. Come rain or shine, no matter the size of your pooch, they need some exercise. To help them get into the spirit, try a ball thrower. They are inexpensive and will save your arms. Another option is an extending lead, as this opens up the space they have to run. Extenders are a good option if your dog is not good at returning. Spring can be chilly. If your dog is uncomfortable they won’t want to move around, so try a fleece or waterproof coat to keep them happy. Use small, healthy treats to get that doggy running. A splash in the lake is great exercise too, but make sure there are no running currents, and the banks are not steep.

Rabbits, Guinea Pigs and Hamsters All caged animals are susceptible to obesity, so make sure you are not over-feeding them. Bunnies and other outdoor animals should have enough room to run and stand on their hind legs. If you have a small run, consider bringing them indoors to run safely. Hamsters and other small pets should have spinning wheels. It’s a great idea to let them run around in your empty bath.

Birds Birds can be let out to fly around if safe, but it goes without saying - shut all windows and doors first and close curtains as they will see the outdoors as a way of escape. Confine them to one room, and drape sheets on anything that won’t agree with bird poop - just in case! Exercise is an essential part of a healthy pet’s lifestyle. You might also find that sharing this time with your pet is a great de-stressor for you too!

Rehoming an animal

Adopting a pet If you are considering becoming a pet owner then you might like to look at rehoming an animal. The process isn’t as difficult as it might seem and you can make a huge difference to an animal’s life

H

aving a pet at home can bring about any number of benefits. From company to stress relief, from helping you to get regular exercise to teaching children how to look after animals, your decision to have a pet can be a very personal one. The type of pets people now own are also expanding – gone are the days of having to decide between a cat and a dog, now people are owning goats and chickens as well as the traditional rabbits and guinea pigs. If now is the right time for you to get a pet then think about adopting, many local centres have a variety of pets waiting to be rehomed, often through no fault of their own. Before you plan a visit, however, there are a few things you will need to consider. The biggest commitment you will need to give to a pet is your time. If you would like a dog but the house is empty all day is this the right decision? How much time will you have each day to care for your pet? Do you have the right space, both indoors and outdoors? The larger and more energetic the animal the more space they will need. Do you have children and if so how do they feel about having a pet? Also, if you are buying a pet for your child consider the pet’s lifespan – if it is a long one then you will potentially become the primary carer for the pet when your children leave home! What provisions will you make for your pet when you go away on holiday or if you have long periods away from home? Make sure you are prepared financially. As well as the cost to buy a pet there are ongoing costs such as food, bedding, toys, vets bills and insurance. There are many rehoming centres in the area

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

"The biggest commitment you will need to give to a pet is your time."

ranging from specific types of animal such as dogs or cats to a wide variety of animals including chickens, goats and ponies! Many of these centres have websites so before your first visit it may be a good idea to take a look, familiarise yourself with their rehoming policies to make sure you meet any criteria and, of course, look at the animals hoping to be rehomed. On your visit you will be able to see the animals as well as learn more about them. Make sure you take your time with this part of the process, if you don’t see anything that is quite right then don’t compromise – it makes more sense to revisit another time, it’s a big decision so needs to be right! Once you have decided on the pet you want there will be forms to fill in which will include contact details as well as a little information about your circumstances. As much as the rehoming centres want to rehome their animals they need to be sure that the animal will be safe, well cared for and happy. But as you will want this too, the form filling should not be too much of an inconvenience!! The rehoming centre may wish to come and visit your home just to double check its suitability. This will be done at a time to suit you. Once all the forms have been filled in and the home checks have been carried out all you will need is one more appointment to go and pick up your new pet. And when you have your new pet don’t be afraid to keep in touch with the rehoming centre as they are more than happy to be on hand with any help you may need.

Easter

Easter Recipes Spring is such a wonderful time with new life all around us and Easter usually means a family get together – why not try these traditional recipes?

Leg of Lamb Preheat your oven to 190°c. Rub the leg of lamb with salt and pepper. Transfer to a roasting tin and add rosemary, either on the stalk or taken off. Cook for 45 minutes and then lower the oven temperature to 160°c and continue to roast until the juices run clear. Once cooked remove from the oven and leave to stand. Carve and serve with seasonal vegetables.

Simnel Cake Preparation method Preheat the oven to 150°c. Line a 20cm deep round tin with silicone paper. Mix the ingredients together and put half the mixture in the bottom of the cake tin. Divide the marzipan into 3 equal parts and roll out one piece into a 20cm circle. Put it on top of the cake mixture. Spoon the rest of the mixture on the top. Bake for 2 and a half hours until brown, well risen and firm to the touch. Allow to cool. When the cake is cool warm up the apricot jam and brush the top of the cake with it. Roll out half of the remaining marzipan to the size of the top of the cake and press down on the top of the cake. Roll the rest of the marzipan into 11 balls and place around the edge of the cake. Brush the whole of the top with egg and grill until the marzipan turns a light golden colour.

Easter Biscuits Preparation method Preheat the oven to 180°c and line 2 baking sheets with grease proof paper. Combine the butter and sugar. Add the egg and the flour and mix until you have a firm dough. Wrap the dough in cling film and put into the fridge for at least half an hour. When the dough is chilled roll it out to a thickness of roughly quarter of an inch. Cut out shapes using an Easter theme such as eggs, chicks and bunnies. Put the biscuits onto the baking tray and bake for 8-10 minutes until golden. When cooked remove from the oven and leave to cool. Once cool decorate the biscuits.

Gardening

Making your own compost Spring in the garden is an exciting time when all of your planting can get underway - we take a look at the humble compost heap and the benefits it can have for your garden

L

et’s be honest, sitting in your bright and beautiful garden in summer admiring the results of all of your hard work you put in during Spring, feels great. A large part of your preparations once the weather starts warming up is to encourage everything to grow and compost can be especially handy. Rather than buying compost how about making your own? You could even go one step further and build your own compost bin. The beauty of your own compost is that it is easy to make, free to make and will benefit your garden. As well as using mowings from the lawn, other garden waste such as annual weeds, dead leaves and old bedding plants can be used to bulk up the heap. Uncooked vegetable peelings and teabags from the kitchen can also be thrown on. If you are going to put kitchen waste on the heap make sure there are no food scraps in there and if you are throwing old plants on make sure there are no perennial roots or weeds with seed heads. Many garden centres sell compost bins both wooden and plastic and are easy to transport home. If you fancy having a go at building one yourself make sure it is big enough so that heat can build up, allowing the compost to work well. If you allow

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN about a cubic metre this will allow you to layer properly and heat will be able to build up. If you are building a bin from scratch remember that you will need easy access to the compost when it is time to put it on the garden so make sure you build your bin in such a way that the compost will be easily accessible. Once you have your bin ready and in place then you can start to fill it. There should be plenty of drainage in the bottom followed by your first layer of garden waste. If possible try to vary your layers – perhaps use your kitchen waste in between grass cuttings. When you have put your waste onto the heap then cover it – this can be anything from polythene to a piece of carpet to even building a lid onto your bin. Then all you have to do is wait! A few months is generally a good amount of time to wait which is why starting now will pay huge dividends in Summer! From time to time take off your cover and aerate the compost (putting in your garden fork should do the trick). This adds air which helps everything to rot. Once ready you can use your compost as mulch around your plants or in your vegetable patch. You can even use it for potting plants. So with a little work in Spring your garden will thank you in Summer!

Beautiful Bedrooms Extra special finishing touches

Y

"...a pair of curtains for display make the room look a little softer? Perhaps voiles could do the same job?"

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

ou’ve spent time, effort and money decorating your bedroom to turn it into an oasis of relaxation and comfort. The walls and the floor look stunning, the furniture fits beautifully and it’s nearly finished. What’s missing are those finishing touches which reflect your personality and truly make it yours. Before you start, decide on a theme. It can be a colour scheme, a pattern or texture. Make sure they will look good with the colours or patterns already on the walls. As a rule, anything too busy isn’t going to help you fall asleep at night! Once you have decided on your theme think about how much space you’ve got – clutter is not a good look. Then comes the fun part, the shopping! You can either hit the shops or use the internet which can be handier if you are looking to compare items. Saying that, sometimes you need to see the items in person to make sure they are the right shade, shape or size. Here are some of our favourite finishing touches: Rugs. If you have wooden flooring in the bedroom then a rug can give a feeling of warmth and comfort. Colours, textures and patterns can all come into play here. You can also play around with sizes and they can go either by the side or at the end of the bed. Which leads to… The bed. There is no reason why the bed shouldn’t be the focal point of the bedroom. A change of headboard can transform the look of a bed. Dressing the bed is also essential with beautiful duvet sets, elegant runners or deluxe throws giving the bed a feeling of complete luxury. Throw pillows. Try and resist your urge to go mad and buy twenty throw pillows! Half a dozen will look fantastic and different patterns and sizes can look especially good here. Throw pillows really do make a bed look extra inviting and comfortable. Bedside table. You’ve invested in new bedside tables so take it one step further and populate them with beautiful things. It’s an opportunity to put your stamp on the room. Think lamps with gorgeous lampshades, your favourite books and even flowers to bring a touch of freshness. You can even think practically and add a carafe for water and a jewellery stand for taking off your jewellery at night. Look at the walls. You have a new coat of paint or roll of wallpaper on there – do they need anything else? Photographs in frames or pictures look fab. Even large paintings or a canvas can look good. Seating. Have somewhere to sit that isn’t the bed. Comfy chairs to relax in in the evening or somewhere to check your emails and social media before bed. Or you can add a touch of glamour and add a chaise. Again you can have fun with colours and textures. Windows. If you are a blinds kind of person would a pair of curtains for display make the room look a little softer? Perhaps voiles could do the same job?

Birthday Parties ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

Keeping the Kids Entertained

irthday Parties. Bigger than they used to be, that’s for sure! Gone are the days of having three or four friends over to your house for a game of pass the parcel and a party tea, children these days expect bigger and better – and we are lucky enough to live in an area that is able to cater for teenies right up to teenagers. I must admit that our household loves parties and we never turn an invitation down. Over the last few months I have taken my daughter to a cinema party, a football party, a Mad Science party, a Frozen party and a whole host of others. I’m also looking forward to a tobogganing party in a couple of weeks. Talk about variety! I have my own daughter’s party to organise shortly and I’m feeling the pressure a little this year (after a bit of a disaster last year with a DJ who arrived armed with only a handful songs that the children recognised and a rather unfortunate incident with a stick and a Dad who was helping out with a Pinata). So this year I’ve decided to leave it to the professionals and hire somewhere where everything is done for you. All I have to do is bake the cake! That way I know it will be done right. And any injuries to parents can be taken up with someone else… A quick search online will show you not only how many venues there are around here but also how many entertainers from discos to magicians and arty type parties to roller discos and the staunch favourite for young ones, the Fun Farm. You can also outsource your food – as much fun as I had making seemingly endless sandwiches last year I have since been to parties where Happy Meals and Pizza have been served. Much less hassle and the kids loved it. So as much as I love a traditional party I do love the variety that modern birthday do’s bring.

Citroën C4 Cactus

he Citroën C4 Cactus isn’t the prettiest car on the block – but it does have appeal. Indeed, the bold and distinctive Cactus won over the judges in the highly-prized small hatchback category at the UK Car of the Year Awards 2015. It’s been described as “the quirkiest car of the year”, with “refreshing looks” and “a sense of fun”. I’d agree with two out of those three points – but the ‘refreshing looks’ statement is stretching the truth a bit. The high-set LED running lights are the best features of the car, with slightly out of sorts headlights positioned lower down. But the most bizarre and unsightly elements of the Citroën are the ‘Airbump’ protection panels on the side doors. They’re designed to stop parking knocks – and are replaceable. I’d rather get a ding and have it knocked out than have these grotesque slabs of plastic

34 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

❱ BY TIM BARNES-CLAY glued to my motor. Aesthetics aside, crossover vehicles, such as the C4 Cactus, sell like hot cakes and any car manufacturer worth its salt seems to have one in its line-up. Citroën is obviously going head to head with the Nissan Juke and Renault Captur - but, there’s a major difference: the French firm has gone its own way, stripping the car to its bones to lower cost and weight, and boost efficiency. Inside the cabin, some of the plastics are cheap to the touch, and the car’s flat surfaces are interrupted by a bare minimum of switchgear. Most of the Cactus’s functions are operated via a touch screen that rests on top of the centre console, and an instrument display screen sits to the front of the steering wheel. The front seats are wide but lack support; there’s no obvious lumbar adjustment and I found it fiddly, even with the adjustable steering column, to achieve a comfortable driving position. Even worse, the five-speed

manual box’s action is like limp lettuce. The C4 Cactus has a wide range of engines, but it’s the 1.6 diesel 100bhp BlueHDi I drove that’s destined to be the most popular; it offers a respectable blend of power and economy. The car’s punchy enough, though the long gearing forfeits agility for efficiency. Zero to 62mph in 10.7 seconds is par for the course for the class, but this is a vehicle built for getting you from A to B in relative calm rather than pure pace. Top end is 114mph and you can expect up to 80mpg on an average run. The mpg figure will be this car’s real selling point. On the practical side of things, a 358 litre boot is excellent for the class and the deep, wide shape is valuable. Back seat passengers have oodles of headroom, though leg room isn’t all that remarkable. Based on an extended version of the same chassis as the popular, youth oriented DS3, the Cactus is okay, but Citroën has tried too hard to make it look different. The result is a pretty ugly car which I don’t think will age particularly well. On the other hand, if you’re looking for a motor that genuinely stands out from the crowd, and doesn’t drink much fuel, the C4 Cactus 1.6 diesel 100hp BlueHDi makes a compelling case for itself.

Easter Egg Hunt Venue: Moulton Windmill Time: 10am – 3pm Come along to the tallest windmill in the country and join in their Easter Egg Hunt. Follow the clues that the Easter Rabbit has left around the mill to receive a bag of eggs! There will be a charge per child.

Henry Sandon Venue: South Holland Centre Time: 2pm An entertaining afternoon in the company of the Antiques Roadshow’s much-loved ‘Potaholic’. Henry Sandon was born into a musical family, later studying at the Guildhall School of Music, singing in the Worcester Cathedral Choir and teaching at the Royal Grammar School. However his life was drastically diverted from this musical path by the finding of Medieval and Roman pottery in his garden. This led to him becoming a ‘potaholic’, in love with his pottery and porcelain. He is best known for his many years on The Antiques Roadshow where his most famous discovery was the highly valuable Ozzie the slipware owl. Henry will share witty anecdotes from his lifetime’s passion for pottery and will finish with a chatty question and answer session. If you have a ticket for the show and would like a free valuation of your most interesting piece of pottery (one per person) please bring it along to the Centre prior to the show. We will be issuing numbered tickets for valuations from 12 noon on the day only on a first-come-firstserved basis.

Henry will begin valuations at 1pm and will endeavour to view as many pieces as possible but we cannot guarantee that everyone will be seen.
