Welcome to the August issue We are now in full swing of the school holidays and I cannot believe how the nights are drawing in and that can only mean one thing…we have to make the most of the warmer weather! The last month I have personally been getting out and about to the local family attractions before the busy times with all the school children, I know it is only a matter of a few years and I will be doing battle like many of my parent friends! The highlight of our last month was my little boys nursery trip to Rand Farm Park – well worth the journey if your children like animals! We have also enjoyed family bike rides and trips to the seaside. Enough about me, let’s talk about what’s in this issue for you! Martin Lewis Nursery trip to Rand Farm Park is offering advice on buying home insurance, making sure you have the best deal as well as the right cover. Our recipes this month are all summery – BBQ lamb, quick cocktails and smartie cookies that are easy to make on a MUNITY C A L COM rainy day as a family activity. Community says Thank You to hardworking nurse Sally Brown, 43, Dept. Sister at Johnson Community Hospital , outpatient ward in Spalding was given the surprise of her life when she won a Pop Up Party on July 5, in celebration of her work in the community with the NHS. The reward, which came courtesy of pork pie manufacturer, Pork Farms, was given in recognition of everyday heroes in the community, and Sally was one of five lucky winners shortlisted from hundreds to win a complete party set up to celebrate with her family and friends. Pop Up Party winner, Sally Brown said: “I’m in total shock, I was supposed to be going for a meal with a friend, so this was completely not what I was expecting at all, but very very much appreciated and thank you to Teresa for the lovely nomination. “I’m honestly really touched and really surprised this evening, it wasn’t at all what I was expecting, even more so I can’t quite believe that Teresa managed to keep quiet for this long! It’s a really nice honour to receive this award and to receive the recognition for the work that I do. I enjoy making my team happy and making sure my team are supported, so thank you again.” Colleague and nominator, Teresa Sheriff, 51, who also works at Johnson Hospital, Spalding said: “The reason I nominated Sally is because she does an awful lot for the town itself and everyone around her - She puts herself second to her department at work, the people of Spalding, everyone, and it’s about

time she feels appreciated and it’s nice to say thank you where thank you’s are deserved. “And to be honest the fact that everyone here has kept their mouths zipped in preparation for this surprise is a miracle! Not only do I respect Sally as my Sister but I love her as a friend.” The national campaign, that launched in May, gave UK residents the chance to thank their everyday hero by nominating them to receive a surprise Pop Up Party and Sally was finally chosen as one of the lucky five, whittled down from a shortlist of 25, to be surprised with the Pork Farms van and a whole spread of Pork Farms products. The five winning parties were visited in their local area as part of a weeklong tour around the UK between July 4 and 8 2016.

Spalding Air Cadets Wing Field Competition Success The cadets of 1406 Squadron Air Training Corps (ATC) recently participated in the Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire Wing Field Competition, this annual event sees thirty squadrons in the wing participate in a full weekend of competitions from Aircraft Recognition, Team Leadership Exercises, Music to Drill. This year the Spalding squadron placed 12th overall, its highest result in the last 5 years, partly resulting from the Young Adult First Aid Team winning for the third year in a row and the Youth Team winning for the second time in the last three years. A nice surprise was new Adult Sgt Maria Lockie also being awarded the Wing Commander Bower Award for her time and dedication as a Cadet Warrant Officer. Overall it was a great weekend and the cadets all had fun with lots of smiling faces. If you are between 13 and 17 and interested in joining Air Cadets, we are having a new intake recruitment on the 23 June 2015, call 01775 725185 (Parade evenings) Tuesdays and Fridays, 7pm – 9:30pm for more information, or visit our HQ at the ACF/ ATC Centre, Castle Sports Complex, Pinchbeck Road, Spalding.

Spalding Student Receives Accolade at Brits Style Awards Over 350 guests filled New College Stamford’s recently opened Borderville Sports Centre for a spectacular ‘Brits’ style End of Year Student Awards celebration. The 100 nominated students arrived with pride and delight of their outstanding achievements this year to have been invited to the phenomenal awards ceremony held on their behalf. Dressed to impress, and alongside their friends, families and tutors, they were welcomed with the glitz and glamour of a red carpet, wine and canapés. The evening saw 8 deserving students crowned winners after being nominated by their tutors in categories including: Level 1, 2 and 3 Awards for Excellence, Apprentice of the Year, Award for Enterprise, Volunteer of the Year, Determined to Succeed Award, Community Award and of course the coveted Student of the Year. Spalding student Sophie Rodgers was crowned this years’ Level 2

Award for Excellence winner. This was of course to the adulation of her tutors who had nominated her for the prestigious and respected accolade. Reading her nomination, Emma Hemmings, Head of Department said, “Our award winner has shown great drive, determination and such a positive work ethic in pursuing a career within Hotel Management that it has come as no surprise that they have successfully secured a place on the Concord Hotel two-year Management Development Programme, that is endorsed by the Institute of Hospitality.”

She becomes the second student in a row from the college to win this title. I’m really excited about getting to work with the Chef Bennett at the Sheraton Park Lane and cooking for the guests of the British Turkey Awards this September.” As well as having the chance to cook her dish, Pam has also won £300 of catering vouchers and her college receives £500. eadership elections, a new Prime Minister and leaving the European Union are undoubtedly going to dominate the news for some considerable time and will inevitably cause uncertainty in the markets and stability of the pound against other currencies, which will in turn have an effect on many who will be taking their annual holidays. It would not be difficult to look on all this with doom and gloom and only see the negatives, but I see it as an opportunity to start afresh with new ideas and opportunities. For me though life goes on, most businesses have contingency plans in place and those that export will be making hay while the sun shines. House prices as an example may fall which will be good for young people wanting to get on the housing ladder, but not so good for others. Importantly local councils, parish, district and county have to get on with delivering our every day services albeit with considerably less money than before. There are always opportunities. Devolution is a huge opportunity to bring in much needed investment into Greater Lincolnshire that we would not otherwise have to invest in road infrastructure, skills, flood management and more. Whether or not that will be with a Mayor which is well known to be universally unpopular, but currently a condition of central government funding, we shall see. With a new Prime Minister and cabinet there will be a new direction and with that opportunities for us to grasp, so in my view exciting times for local government and we hope that some of the financial pressures temporarily may be reduced, even if just in the short term. Currently most of our business rates go straight to central government, but by 2020 this is going to change and will be in the main

retained by local government allowing us to invest locally where it Is most needed, which is great news, but will also be challenging, as business rates in itself are unlikely to cover all our costs, so still some negotiating to do on that particular issue. The retail trade is under considerable pressure especially from the huge increase in Internet sales and therefore the High Street is also suffering. As a District we will continue to help where we can with rate relief and and reducing red tape wherever possible, processing planning and licensing applications within our target times, encouraging new businesses to the area and using 106 planning agreements to invest in our town centres. I am currently negotiating such an agreement for Holbeach which will bring in serious money for regeneration of the town centre, which is badly needed. The roundabout at Peppermint Junction that will reduce heavy traffic coming through the town will start construction in March. Work continues in Spalding on the Western Relief road and the Spalding Gateway project with conference centre and commercial business opportunities. A new business app is being unveiled that will help retail businesses in all our towns - look in the local papers for the latest on this project. The District Council is looking at all its’ major assets which are currently at a cost to the local taxpayer to develop business plans to make them cost neutral as a minimum and include the Priory Road Offices, where we can share more of our offices with other partners, creating a bigger revenue stream and reducing our costs there, the South Holland Centre looking at further income generation projects such as the option of more smaller cinema screens and introducing more cultural and heritage at Ayscoughfee Hall and Gardens possibly managed by an external heritage organisation. Partners and the public will be consulted once we we see the detailed business plans early next year. So irrelevant of what goes on Nationally, local government will continue with its day to day work with the many challenges that will bring and we will continue to strive to improve our services as best we can with the funding we receive. Enjoy the summer break.

It is your right to take maternity leave no matter how long you have worked for your employer. If you are in one of the following jobs, some of this information may not apply to you. You will need to check your contract of employment to see what maternity rights you have at work. This applies to: ❖ women in the police force (not civilian employees) ❖ women in the armed forces ❖ share fisherwomen. How much maternity leave can you take? Most women have the right to take up to 52 weeks’ maternity leave. This does not depend on how long you have worked for your employer. The first 26 weeks of maternity leave are called Ordinary Maternity Leave (OML). During OML, you will still get all the same rights under your contract of employment as if you were still at work. The only exception is that you will not get your normal pay unless your contract allows for it. You can also take an additional 26 weeks’ maternity leave called Additional Maternity Leave (AML). This makes a total of 52 weeks’ maternity

leave. Again, this doesn’t depend on how long you have worked for your employer. If you’re taking AML, this must follow on directly after Ordinary Maternity Leave and there must be no gap between the two. The GOV.UK website has an interactive calculator which helps you to calculate what maternity leave you are entitled to. Go to www.gov.uk . Your contract of employment may give you extra rights to maternity leave, but it can’t give you less than the law allows. When maternity leave begins and ends You can begin your maternity leave at any time from the 11th week before your baby is due. If you want, you can work right up to the day your baby is born. If you have an illness that’s connected to your pregnancy in the four weeks before the baby is due, your maternity leave may have to start from that date. If you are taking Ordinary Maternity Leave (OML), it will finish at the end of the 26th week after it began. If you are taking Additional Maternity Leave (AML), it will finish at the end of the 52nd week after it began unless you’ve agreed a different date with your employer. You don’t need to tell your employer that you are returning to work unless you want to return earlier. You must give your employer at least eight weeks’ warning if you want to return to work earlier than the agreed date. Since 5 April 2015, you may want to bring your leave to an end early to create leave which you can share with your partner. This is called shared parental leave.

Returning to work

You don’t need to tell you r employer that you are returning to work unless you want to return earlier. You must give you r employer at least eight weeks’ warning if you want to return to work earlier than the agr eed date.

When to tell your employer you want to take maternity leave You must tell your employer, by the end of the 15th week before the baby is due, that: ❖ you are pregnant ❖ the date your baby is due ❖ the date you want your maternity leave to start. You must give your employer a medical certificate called a MATB1. You can get this from your midwife or GP. It gives the date your baby is due. Once you have told your employer that you want to take maternity leave, they must write to you within 28 days and tell you the date you should come back to work. School news

Ayscoughfee Hall School The Juniors have spent the last term busy rehearsing for their production of ‘Go for Gold’, a musical based on the Olympic Games, both modern and in Ancient Greece. Year 6 were also working on their Leaver’s Assembly presentations and enjoyed the Prize Giving and the Leaver’s Lunch generously prepared by the P.T.F.A. Other classes, not to be outdone, have enjoyed trips to Pigeons farm, Sacrewell Farm, the Sealife Centre in Hunstanton, The Fitzwilliam Museum and University Botanic Gardens in Cambridge and the Eco Centre in Swaffham as well as local trips on the Water Taxi and to the Forge. Sport and music continue to be high on the agenda with rounders tournaments between the school Houses and in competitions in Grantham. All children who learn an instrument in school have had the opportunity to perform to their parents and the rest of the school in a series of music assemblies featuring piano, drums, violin, guitar, flute, cornet, saxophone,

trumpet and clarinet. The children were also lucky enough to spend a day in the company of prize winning gundogs and seven adorable puppies. Having been shown some basic hand signals and commands, they had the opportunity to try for themselves and were astounded at the skills and obedience of the spaniels. There was also the chance to cuddle the puppies and two lucky pupils have been invited to Shropshire to take part in the National Gun Dog Finals in September.

Spalding High School For Girls In between exams, Spalding High School has managed to fit in a packed schedule to finish the academic year. The whole school was delighted with the reception their inaugural Spring Fayre received. It is estimated that approximately 400 people passed through the doors to enjoy the stalls and activities. The day

was such a resounding success that the Spring Fayre is already in the Diary for next year with plans to make it an even bigger event if possible. The Sixth Form Young Enterprise team scooped a host of awards including trophies for Innovation and the Environmental trophy for their company Magbag.

The Environmental trophy was particularly special as the premise behind their company was for reuse and saving the environment. Students showcased their work in the ‘Exhibition ‘16’ show, an Art Exhibition designed to celebrate the outstanding creative achievements and hard work demonstrated by the GCSE,

AS and A2 students currently studying Art and Design, Food and Nutrition, Textiles and Product Design. The evening was very popular with students discussing aspects of their work with visitors. Staff and students are now looking forward to the new academic year in September.

Boston College James Kirkland, Level 3 Apprentice at David Ross Academy through Boston College, has won the regional round and is eagerly awaiting the news as to whether or not he has landed himself with spot in the nationwide final of the World Skills IT Competition. World Skills competitions expose young people to a variety of skilled careers and equip them with the tools and resources they need to build a future. This is done through a variety or organised skill competitions and events for young people on all levels and all over the world. Through taking part in these events, it is believed that competitors build confidence, commitment, and self-esteem and they also give companies, industries, and trades a chance to meet skilled people who have demonstrated that they are at the ‘top of their game.’ On Thursday 30th June, James Kirkland attended the World Skills IT Competition event at the College of NESCOT in Epsom Surrey, which was the final round for the whole of his region. He is currently working as an Apprentice IT Technician at David Ross Academy (previously Middlecott School, Kirton) supported by Boston College. At this event, all competitors represent the best of their peers and are all under the

age of 23 years. They demonstrate technical abilities both individually and collectively to execute specific tasks for which they study and/or perform in their workplace. On the day, James had to compete in a number of tasks lasting for four hours, each relating to the typical work of an IT technician, against a minimum of 30 other competitors from within the industry and from different colleges. In the IT Technician category, James’ competence at the tested skills successfully landed him the Gold Award. James is currently awaiting confirmation as to whether or not he has enough marks to attend the UK final in Birmingham on 19th November this year. This is a very exciting opportunity as the winner of the UK final will be put forward to attend the world wide event against extremely tough competition in Abu Dhabi (UAE) in 2017. When speaking about James’ success so far and the potential further success, his Lecturer Mick Bean said, “In all IT categories last year, no one form the UK was even placed. This is a very tough competition and as a college we are very proud that James has successfully made it this far.”

“This is a very tough competition and as a college we are very proud that James has successfully made it this far.” 12 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

As parents we teach our children social and behavioral skills as well as helping them to learn about the world that surrounds them. Many of the instinctive things we do help to teach them about the world and give them skills to prepare them for school and early learning. Can We Get the Work/Life Balance? It’s not easy juggling work and family that’s for sure. You can find yourself thinking you need to pick up nappies and make a Red Riding Hood cape for dress up day at school during a meeting and then find yourself thinking about that presentation you have to write when you should be playing tea parties with your little one. You can feel pulled in two directions and it’s hard to know how to get a balance. Here are our top 10 tips for creating a work life balance that works for you: Organise childcare you’re happy with. If you’re worrying about your child’s health and happiness while you’re at work, there’s no way you’ll be able to do your job properly. Find childcare that you and your child are happy with. If you’re lucky enough to have a support network of family and/or friends living nearby, make an informal agreement that you can call on them to help if your child’s ill. If you do not have a support network within family and friends there are still many options available to you such as nurseries, childminders or even discussing with your employer the options of flexi-hours so you and your partner could still both work but share the childcare?

Ignore the bad press Don’t bother reading pointless news stories based on ‘latest research’ and blaming working mothers for damaging their

child’s health/intelligence/long-term prospects. It just piles on unecessary guilt. These are the two things that matter: you know why you’re working and your children know you love them.

Don’t do everything yourself They say ‘women can have it all’ but in reality you’ll just fall over if it’s down to you to keep all the plates spinning and do everything yourself. Get help - from your partner, your family, the in-laws...Put systems in place to get everyone in the house to help. Don’t try to be superwoman.

Get organised Leave as little as possible to the manic mornings: pack bags and get clothes ready the night before. Buy enough school clothes and children’s socks and underwear so you’re not a slave to the washing machine every evening. Have a ‘grab and go ‘ spot for keys, purse etc. Give yourself a break You can only do what you can do. Be kind to yourself and don’t be too hard on yourself. It doesn’t matter if your home’s not immaculate. There will be days when you feel guilty and wish you could be the parent helper on the school trip when you had to work and equally there will be days when you feel guilty as you were knackered after a night with a poorly child and didn’t feel you gave it your all at work.

Get Online elf Don’t let yours st la always come

The internet can be a great time saver and life saver – do your grocery shopping online and banks now allow you to manage your finances from your sofa.

Try to draw a clear line between work time and family time Work when you’re at work and be there as a mummy when you are at home. It’s really hard with smartphones and emails pinging into your inbox after hours but be strict with

Family Life You can incorporate many activities into your daily life to help prepare your little ones for the bigger world, think about: ❖ Imaginary games ❖ Musical games ❖ Treasure baskets ❖ Puppets ❖ Counting ❖ Fun with shapes ❖ Painting and colouring ❖ Building ❖ Dancing and singing

yourself and try to make a clear line between the two roles. Make the most of weekends and holidays for family time. Switch off from work and cherish those times. They go by so fast after all.

Cherish the good things about working Apart from the money which pays the bills, hold onto the great things about your working day. It could be something as simple and everyday as having a good laugh with work mates, drinking a coffee without having a small child clamouring to eat the chocolate on top, having your boss praise you or simply having five minutes to read your book on the train. Similarly take time to hold onto the most magical parts of being a mummy too. There is room for both if you plan your time to make it work. www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 17

Health & beauty

Look after your eyes Because our eyesight changes as we age, almost all of us will need to wear glasses or contact lenses by the time we’re 65.

I

f you have regular eye tests, wear the right lenses and look after your eyes, there’s a better chance your sight will remain clear.

Have regular eye tests An eye test can pick up eye diseases, such as glaucoma and cataracts, as well as general health problems, including diabetes and high blood pressure. The good news is that if you’re 60 or over, you can have a free NHS eye test every two years. You can have a free test every year if you’re 70 or over. However, a 2011 survey from Age UK showed that nearly 2 million people over 60 did not take advantage of free eye tests in the previous two years.

Keep your eyes healthy There are several things you can do to keep your eyes as healthy as possible: v Eat well. Eating a healthy, balanced diet is important for your eyes. Eating plenty of vegetables and fruit will benefit your overall health and may help protect against some

conditions such as cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. v Wear sunglasses. Strong sunlight can damage your eyes and may increase your risk of cataracts. v Quit smoking. Smoking can increase your chances of developing conditions such as cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. v Stay a healthy weight. Being overweight increases your risk of diabetes, which can lead to sight loss. v Use good lighting. To see well, your eyes need three times as much light when you’re 60 as they did when you were 20. Increase the daylight in your home by keeping windows clean and curtains pulled back. Make sure you have good electric lighting too, especially at the top and bottom of stairs so you can see the steps clearly. For reading or close work, use a direct light from a flexible table lamp, positioned so the light is not reflected by the page and causing glare. v Exercise. Good circulation and oxygen intake are important for our eye health. Both

So you’ve cut out dairy and sugar, added acne-fighting oils to your skin-care routine, and taken up a de-stressing meditation practice-but you’re still battling poor skin condition? Wear the right lenses It’s important to wear the correct prescription lenses. This will improve your quality of life and reduce the risk of accidents such as falls. According to Age UK’s research, poor vision was a factor in 270,000 falls in people over the age of 60 in the previous two years.

of these are stimulated by regular exercise. v Sleep well. As you sleep, your eyes are continuously lubricated and irritants, such as dust or smoke, that may have accumulated during the day are cleared out.

Eye problems as you get older As you get older, you become more likely to get certain eye problems: v Difficulty reading. Eye muscles start to weaken from the age of 45. It’s a natural ageing process of the eye that happens to us all. By the time you’re 60, you’ll probably need separate reading glasses. v Floaters. These tiny specks or spots that float across your vision are normally harmless. v Cataracts. Easily detected in an eye test, this gradual clouding of the eye’s lens is extremely common in over-60s. A simple operation can restore sight. v Glaucoma. This is related to an increase in pressure in the eye that leads to damage of the optic nerve, which connects the eye to the brain. Left untreated, glaucoma leads to tunnel vision and, ultimately, blindness. v Macular degeneration. This is a disease of the retina caused by ageing. The retina is the nerve tissue lining the back of your eye. There are two types of macular degeneration. The first type, called dry macular degeneration, gets worse very slowly. The other type gets worse very quickly. This needs to be seen as an emergency in a hospital eye unit for prompt treatment.

Macular Society Optometrist of the year 2013 & 2015 Nominated

Andy Molsom of Molsom and Associates, has been nominated for the ‘Optometrist of the year’ award as part of the Macular Society’s Awards for Excellence. The nomination recognises his exceptionally good practice in the care of people with macular degeneration. Andy Molsom, who was also nominated for the awards in 2013, said: “I am very proud to have been nominated again for this award. It’s a great honour that a patient has thought my care is worthy for this Award of Excellence”. Cathy Yelf, Chief Executive of the Macular Society, said: “It is clear from his nomination that Mr Molsom works hard to improve the lives of people affected by macular degeneration, with excellence in advice and information. We are extremely grateful for his efforts in Spalding.” Age-related macular degeneration affects the central vision and is the most common cause of sight loss in the UK. More people are affected as our population ages. Kathleen Anna Pell, who nominated Mr Molsom for the award, said: “By making sure I had regular examinations on my eyes Mr Molsom quickly noticed the change in my right eye that dry macular had changed to wet macular and arranged treatment without delay. “Mr Molsom is well known in this area as a competent and caring optometrist and I recommend him for this award.” “By investing in the very latest technology, we are able to deliver an exceptional service for our patients. The latest 3D OCT retinal digital scanner helps us to find those patients who are at risk of sight problems, especially wet AMD, at such an early stage that treatment can make a real difference to retaining good eyesight and with it independence for our patients.” commented Andy Molsom The Macular Society is the national charity for anyone affected by central vision loss. We provide free information and support to improve lives today and we fund research so that one day we can overcome macular disease.

Home Insurance

H

ow much are you getting paid to take out home insurance? That’s right, PAID! The record so far this year from my cheap home insurance system is £23 profit – and the all-time record is £67 profit. So can you beat it? Of course not everyone can make a profit, yet the same steps that lead you to that can slice huge amounts off the cost of many people’s insurance, so it’s worth doing anyway. The most important thing to understand is that there is no one cheapest home insurer. This is all about how each company reacts to your own particular risk. Therefore, the only way to find it is to follow a system. My detailed cost cutting strategy is at www.mse.me/homeinsurance and a month ago someone told me they’d use it to get contents insurance for £3 – so I challenged the rest of my users to see if they could beat it. Ian came back saying he could trump it: “Paid £32 and have £55 cashback confirmed, so I should have £23 profit”. That’s now my record result in 2016, now the challenge is open to you to beat it.

1

KNOW HOW MUCH COVER YOU NEED There are two elements to home insurance: buildings and contents cover. An easy way to work out which each covers is to imagine you can turn your home upside down: everything that stays put is buildings, if it falls, it’s contents. Though if you need both, it’s usually best to get a joint policy, as it stops arguments between insurers over who covers what if there’s a problem. - Don’t over cover with Buildings Insurance. This is only usually needed by freeholders. If you rent or have a leasehold property it’s usually the landlord/freeholder who should have this. You’re meant to cover the rebuild cost – how much it would cost to rebuild your home should it get knocked down. But many wrongly cover market value, the amount it might sell for – which is often far higher. To find out how much you should cover see the calculator at http://abi.bcis.co.uk/ - Don’t under cover contents insurance. Most people have far more contents than they think. Walk around the house and add everything up (there’s a calculator on www.directline.com). Yet many underinsure thinking: “I’ve £40k of stuff, but will only cover £20k as I’d never claim it all.”

MARTIN LEWIS

However, if you do then claim, say for a £1,000 TV, the assessor may say: “You’ve only covered half your stuff, so we’ll only pay you out half.” It’s also worth considering fitting a secure lock, such as a five-lever mortice deadlock. The insurance saving means it can pay for itself, and cuts costs for years to come.

2

NEVER AUTO-RENEW. START BY COMBINING COMPARISON SITES If you just auto-renew, you’ll often be fined for apathy. Insurers bump up prices just because they can get away with it. And currently prices are rising, so this will be more noticeable. Comparison sites search a wide range of offers from insurers and brokers. Yet they don’t all search the same deals, or even have the same prices for the same deals. So use two or three. My current order to get the widest spread is www.Confused.com, www. CompareTheMarket.com, www.GoCompare. com and www.moneysupermarket.com. You may even be surprised that your current insurer turns up top of the list with a new customer quote that’s cheaper than your renewal. As Vicki emailed me: “My renewal quote was £700+. Using comparison sites got it to £188 with a better policy. Thanks.”

3

STEP 3: THEN CHECK INSURERS THAT COMPARISON SITES MISS Now you’ve a price benchmark, let’s try to smash it. Big insurers www.Aviva.co.uk and www.DirectLine.com are not included by comparison sites, so check them too. Comparison sites also tend to miss out special promo deals that insurers offer, so it’s worth checking out if there are any of these as well. There’s a daily updated list of hot home deals at www.mse.me/homeinsurance (which also includes special policies if you’ve high value contents).

4

IF YOU WANT TO STAY WHERE YOU ARE, HAGGLE Once you’ve found your cheapest policy take the price to your existing provider and ask them to see if they will match it – they often will. In a recent poll I did, 78% of customers who haggled with Direct Line said they had success, while 81% did with Admiral and 80% with Hastings Direct. So it’s worth a try. As Pat Olver tweeted me: “@MartinSlewis Sainsbury’s home insurance renewal £252. Same policy on confused was £186. Rang Sainsbury’s, talked them down to £181.”

5

IF YOU’RE MOVING, ONCE YOU KNOW WHAT YOU’RE GETTING, CHECK FOR CASHBACK Once you know your cheapest policy and, crucially, you’ve checked IT’S RIGHT FOR YOU, then see if you can earn cashback using a cashback site such as www. Topcashback.co.uk or www.Quidco.com. These sites pay you if you click through them. This usually works, but there can be tracking issues, so see this as a likely added bonus and always check ensure you’re getting the right policy. If you’ve got time and your top three policies are all much of a muchness, it can be worth seeing the cashback on offer for all three.

Final word of warning! And a final word of warning, beware paying monthly, it’s actually just a loan. In effect, the insurer pays upfront then loans you the cash, sometimes at hideous interest (e.g., Endsleigh’s 39.7% APR). If

you can’t afford to pay upfront, check the APR. If it’s high, you’re often better on your credit card, or, better still, get a 0% credit card (just ensure you pay it off within the year).

Easy Raspberry Prosecco Cocktail INGREDIENTS

2 tsp raspberry liqueur handful fresh washed or frozen raspberries Prosecco (or Cava), to top up INGREDIENTS

Preheat the oven to 180C or fan 160C. With a sieve, sift in the bicarbonate of soda, 1 tsp Bicarbonate of Soda baking powder, flour and a pinch of salt into a mixing bowl. 1 tsp baking powder In a separate bowl, mix together the butter and 350g Plain Flour sugar until smooth. Then add the egg and vanilla. 300g caster sugar Mix well until it forms a dough. 250g butter Roll the dough into 20 balls and place them on 1 egg a greased baking tray. Make sure to space them 1 tsp vanilla extract 4 x 40g boxes of Smarties evenly apart as they will expand when cooked. Press a few smarties into each ball, you may need to flatten the balls slightly to do this. Bake for 15 minutes until pale golden brown.

Spoon 1 teaspoon each of raspberry liqueur into two chilled Champagne flutes, then drop in a few raspberries. Hold a spoon inside the glass, over the top of the liqueur, and slowly pour in the Prosecco, pulling the spoon up slowly as you go – this will create the pretty twotone effect.

Fencing Your Boundary! Choosing a good fence is important to the exterior design of your house and its functionality

O

ne of the main reasons why people put up fences is for privacy although there are many other factors. The privacy factor is also crucial to the kind of fence that you choose. Here is a simple guide to the different types of fences:

Aluminium fences Aluminium fencing is quite popular and inexpensive. It can be designed to look just like most of the other fencing material. However, aluminum is not very strong and does not provide enough security as you may look for in a fence. It is not recommended for use in severe weather. On the plus side, aluminium is very easy to maintain.

Wood fences Wood is one of the oldest fencing materials and has stood the test of time due to its aesthetics, durability and great functionality. It still remains one the most popular types of fencing because of the amount of privacy it provides with its wide panels and great height. It is very attractive since it can be carved and painted into any of a variety of colours. Wood fencing has a warm and welcoming feeling without being too expensive. With good

maintenance, wood fencing can easily last as long as the lifespan of your home.

Wrought iron fence Wrought iron fences are great if you want some funky designs on top of your fence. Wrought iron is a strong and beautiful fencing material. They are great as a security measure since they are virtually indestructible. Wrought iron fencing have only one disadvantage, like wood fencing, they also require constant upkeep to prevent discoloration and rusting. You will need to repaint your fences at least once every two or three years.

Chain link fences Although they do not add much privacy, chain link fencing is one of the functional fencing material. Chain link fences are very popular in

ALUMINIUM Popular & inexpensive applications where functionality overrules aesthetics, they are easy on the eye too. Chain link is cheap, durable, easy to maintain and repair and suitable in a variety of applications such as pet enclosures, park enclosures, pool enclosures, school and playground fencing among many other functions.

Secure Your Home during the Holidays With schools soon to break up, we look ahead for a summer of fun. However, it’s unfortunately also a fruitful period for burglars and opportunist thieves. If you are planning to be away during the summer before you leave just double check that all keys and valuables are well hidden from sight, and leave a few lamps on timers so that when night falls it will look like you’re home, deterring

M PS LEAVE LA RS ON T I M E 26 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

any potential thieves who prey on empty properties over this busy social weekend. If you already have an intruder alarm, remember to let a trustworthy neighbour know that you’re away and if the alarm goes off to call you or a family member whom you might have left your key with. You may be close to your neighbour, like many of us are, and then feel safe to leave a spare key with them ‘just in case’. If you don’t feel like you have a neighbour whom you can trust, then you might want to consider an alarm monitoring service, whereby a professional security provider will monitor your alarm. Amanda Chesson from GBSG comments; “At GBSG we provide this service too many homeowners as it gives them peace of mind that if the alarm was to be activated someone will be alerted. For some clients who are away for

long periods we also act as the keyholder and will respond to any alarm activation on their behalf. “Increasingly homeowners are needing more from their security systems. At GBSG we can design an intruder alarm system that helps with home management to provide you with extra reassurance whilst you’re away from home. For instance, you may be an hour into your car journey when you remember that you haven’t switched the heating off – with our advanced integrated systems you would be able to access the system simply via your smartphone. The same for lights – if you forget to set timers you can control lighting remotely from your smartphone, from anywhere and at any time. Such a system helps with peace of mind as you can check the activity happening in your home at any time of the day. Not only helping when you are away on holiday, but also on a daily basis – you could check that the kids have left for school on time and similarly arrive home on time.”

Crossovers are popular in today’s motoring marketplace. But what is a crossover?

W

ell, it’s a sport utility vehicle (SUV) with a chassis more similar to a car than a traditional truck-based SUV. Most come with either two or four-wheeldrive, and having the fundamental elements of a car means a more contented ride. They also tend to return better fuel economy because of lighter construction and smaller engines. Suzuki’s SX4 S-Cross is one of the better value choices of this type of motor, although you may not have heard much about it. That’s because the Japanese automaker is a fairly small player within the UK car scene. Suzuki punches pretty hard above its weight though and, if the S-Cross is anything to go by, the manufacturer is only going to grow in strength in Britain. It’s a well made machine, packed with equipment and, even at flagship level, it only costs £25,149. The SX4 S-Cross’s bold and sporty design offers ample room for passengers and luggage. The front seats offer excellent support and hold you firmly in place, even on tight curves. Behind the wheel, the instrument cluster, although surrounded by a little too much cheap looking plastic, helps you focus on driving. For instance, an outsized speedometer and tachometer border a multi information display that shows anything from fuel consumption to time and outside temperature. High-rigidity in a car’s body is essential to handling, comfort, safety and performance. That’s why the SX4 S-Cross incorporates 28 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

The engine options are 1.6-litre petrol and 1.6-litre diesel. I drove the latter, in top of the range SZ5 DDiS 120 guise and equipped with Suzuki’s four-wheel-drive ALLGRIP system. The four-wheel-drive technology leaves no room for doubt that the SX4 S-Cross is the perfect fusion of family-friendliness, safety and performance. Don’t get me wrong, it’s no hardcore mud-plugger, but it’ll handle dirt, grass, snow, sand and a bit more – so it’s perfect for mini-adventures. The four-wheel-drive system is so adept because it has a variety of settings – AUTO, SPORT, SNOW, and LOCK. Price: £25,149 centre console. It works like this: AUTO prioritises fuel economy in typical driving conditions. The system uses two-wheel-drive by default and will switch to four-wheel-drive if wheel spin is detected. The SPORT setting is best for twisty roads. It makes maximum use of four-wheel-drive in response to how hard you press the accelerator. The SNOW option is optimal for snowy, unpaved and other slippery surfaces and uses four-wheel-drive all the time. LOCK is designed for extricating the car from snow, mud or sand. It does this by distributing high turning power to the rear wheels continually. Safety equipment hasn’t been overlooked either. Features include seven airbags for occupants and the bonnet provides impact absorption which lessens injury if the car hits a pedestrian. In fact, the SX4 S-Cross has been rated one of Europe‘s safest cars, according to independent crash testing results from Euro NCAP, receiving the maximum five-star rating.
