Macular Society Optometrist of the year 2013 & 2015
Nominated
Andy Molsom of Molsom and Associates, has been nominated for the ‘Optometrist of the year’ award as part of the Macular Society’s Awards for Excellence. The nomination recognises his exceptionally good practice in the care of people with macular degeneration. Andy Molsom, who was also nominated for the awards in 2013, said: “I am very proud to have been nominated again for this award. It’s a great honour that a patient has thought my care is worthy for this Award of Excellence”. Cathy Yelf, Chief Executive of the Macular Society, said: “It is clear from his nomination that Mr Molsom works hard to improve the lives of people affected by macular degeneration, with excellence in advice and information. We are extremely grateful for his efforts in Spalding.” Age-related macular degeneration affects the central vision and is the most common cause of sight loss in the UK. More people are affected as our population ages. Kathleen Anna Pell, who nominated Mr Molsom for the award, said: “By making sure I had regular examinations on my eyes Mr Molsom quickly noticed the change in my right eye that dry macular had changed to wet macular and arranged treatment without delay. “Mr Molsom is well known in this area as a competent and caring optometrist and I recommend him for this award.” “By investing in the very latest technology, we are able to deliver an exceptional service for our patients. The latest 3D OCT retinal digital scanner helps us to find those patients who are at risk of sight problems, especially wet AMD, at such an early stage that treatment can make a real difference to retaining good eyesight and with it independence for our patients.” commented Andy Molsom The Macular Society is the national charity for anyone affected by central vision loss. We provide free information and support to improve lives today and we fund research so that one day we can overcome macular disease.

Welcome to the December issue
Nick’s Notes - P6
Happy Christmas! I am sitting here writing my welcome and I am looking out onto a very miserable day, wet, grey and cold. I actually quite like the winter, wrapping up, sharp frosts and Christmas but the one thing I cannot stand is drizzle and rain. Over the last month we have had a busy few weeks in the Hammond household, a big ‘Spring’ clean to make room for the impending arrival of Santa’s delivery of more goodies for the little one, celebrating my stepfathers 65th birthday and a weekend away in Norfolk. That’s without Halloween, bonfire night and a couple of children’s parties thrown into the mix. As much as I love being busy nothing beats a pj day, films on the TV, some yummy food and hot chocolates all round and that’s what we have planned for the weekend, Do Not Disturb! As you’d expect this issue is all about Christmas, and is a jam-packed one! As much as we help you prepare for Christmas with our Gift Guide, recipes and Martin Lewis offering his advice on managing Christmas finances we look at other important topics too. We have a guide to repairs and updates in the home, tips on how to get the kids up and active as well as advice on how to help the elderly this winter.
ITY L COM M U N YOUR LOCA local community
As always we are looking for charities, community groups and events to feature in our local focus, so if you are involved in anything happening locally please get in touch to discuss further. All that’s left for me to say is to have a great month and a very MERRY CHRISTMAS

Guiding Lights new volunteer mentoring project in Spalding A new volunteer mentoring project aims to help both individuals who have experienced mental ill health and community groups that need more support. The Lincolnshire Community and Voluntary Service (LCVS) Guiding Lights project sets out to train a team of mentors to support individuals who have experienced mental ill health or distress to take their first steps into volunteering. Ruth Copleston, senior community development officer at LCVS, said: “We know that people who have experienced mental health issues can feel isolated, stuck at home and lost as to how to move forwards. “Volunteering can have a life-changing impact on their wellbeing and sense of self worth but taking those first steps can be very daunting. “This project is all about developing a team of people with the knowledge, experience, compassion and time to offer support to help individuals to begin making a valuable contribution. “We understand that charities and organisations would love to have more volunteers but don’t always have capacity themselves to offer a lot of additional support. Through this project we aim to put in place what’s needed to help individuals get up-tospeed and help groups have a bigger pool of volunteers to help them achieve their goals.” Initially, the Spalding-based project aims to identify and train volunteer Guiding Lights mentors who will receive ongoing support. They will then work alongside individuals and organisations to help make their volunteering a success. Guiding Lights mentors will either take on the role as a stand-alone volunteering

opportunity or may take it up as an additional responsibility in a role they already hold. Mrs Dawn McClements has been appointed project officer. Originally trained as an occupational therapist – a profession that involves working with people to set goals in the face of physical and mental illness, Dawn also has personal experience of volunteering. Her occupational therapy career grew out of volunteering, then when she left it behind to have a family she took up various volunteering opportunities, including with LCVS, to remain involved in professional settings. She said: “This is a fantastic project that could have very far reaching benefits for both individuals and community groups. “I’m really excited to be on board and very keen to hear from groups and individuals who would like to get involved.” The project has been funded with £15,000 from Lincolnshire’s Managed Care Network Mental Health Promotion Fund. Councillors in favour of combined authority South Holland Councillors have voted in favour of a Mayoral Combined Authority for Greater Lincolnshire. At a meeting of full council on Wednesday, October 26, 31 councillors voted in favour of the proposals, with three voting against. Cllr Malcolm Chandler, deputy leader of South Holland District Council, said: “ I am delighted
with the far-sighted decision taken by SHDC councillors at the council meeting on Wednesday. “It demonstrates the determination of the council for the District to share and benefit from accelerated growth and increased value of the Greater Lincolnshire economy which a devolution agenda is aimed to deliver. “The final date for
the ten leaders to sign off the current deal is 21 November 2016 and it is important that all ten councils continue to work together to achieve the full benefits of Devolved powers and the associated financial support available to Greater Lincolnshire. “I am delighted that South Holland will continue have a seat at that table.”

Empty homes work generates a bonus A reduction in the number of empty homes in South Holland over the past 12 months has generated a financial bonus for South Holland District Council. Between October 2015 and October 2016 the number of vacant properties fell from 258 to 232 and as a result, the council will receive a New Homes Bonus Payment of £180,745 from the government. The authority’s Private Sector Housing Team works alongside owners of empty homes to help bring them back into use. Cllr Christine Lawton, Portfolio Holder for Housing, said: “I would like to congratulate the team for their dedicated work over the past year. Getting such a big bonus payment is a fitting reward for their efforts. “Bringing empty homes back into use can be a long process, taking up much officer time. We are determined to carry on reducing the number of empty properties in the district.” The team has been helping to renovate an empty property in Railway Lane, Sutton Bridge, which had fallen into disrepair and was being targeted by vandals and fly-tippers. Initially the owner did not respond to letters from the team, so a Housing Health and Safety Rating Inspection was carried out earlier this year. Due to its dilapidated condition, an Emergency Remedial Notice was served, meaning broken windows could be boarded up. An Improvement Notice was then served, forcing the owner to carry out necessary repairs at their own expense to bring the property back to a decent standard. This prompted the owner to get in touch and they have been in regular communication with the team ever since. The property has recently had a new kitchen, bathroom, electrics and windows fitted. New plumbing has also been installed as most of the original pipes had been stolen and decorating and garden clearance work carried out. The renovation work is due to be completed at the end of November and the owner has agreed to let the property out. If you have an empty home in your street that is causing problems report it to the Private Sector Housing team on 01775 764712 or email privatehousing@sholland. gov.uk

Nick Worth, The Deputy Leader of South Holland District Council, gives you an insight as to what is happening in and around Spalding and the surrounding villages
Nick’s Notes
tatistics are something that as a politician I see plenty of and you often come away wondering why someone spent so much time compiling them. However at a recent local government meeting my attention was certainly grabbed with some sobering statistics around accidental drowning. Maybe not the most cheerful of subjects but as winter embeds itself it is perhaps timely. One of the most striking characteristics of last year’s UK wide data on accidental drownings is that the majority of victims did not leave home on the day they died intending to go into water of any significant depth. Although most of those who drown can swim, over half the fatalities recorded for 2015 involved victims who either entered the water on the spur of the moment to assist an animal or person or to retrieve an object (35), entered accidentally while running, walking or cycling (70), or were playing beside water or paddling in shallows (26). Seven others died while angling and eight were occupants of motor vehicles.Nine people drowned accidentally whilst having a bath. 83% of drownings involve men and a third involve alcohol, especially pertinent over the Christmas period. So while we will all be enjoying the festive period, please be careful out there. The Christmas period is also one of the busiest for our emergency services, police, ambulance, paramedics and of course firefighters, who during the course of the
last year spent 47% of their call outs on coresponding ( attending to people with medical emergencies such as heart attacks). Training is vitally important to ensure they have those key skills to save lives and just recently firefighters from across Lincolnshire ( 7 appliances in total) attended a major exercise at Bakkavor in Spalding. In a very realistic but simulated exercise involving smoked out buildings in complete darkness, they had to rescue a ‘body’ trapped under a pallet and another who was unaccounted for who they had to find and recover. They did this using breathing apparatus in conjunction with a specialist Ambulance team called The Hazardous Area Response Team (HART). They provide medical care to patients in the “hot zone” of hazardous environments such as collapsed buildings, patients at height or in confined space, water rescue and flooding, firearms incidents and explosions. The exercise was extremely useful in that neither had worked together before and there were many useful lessons learn that will undoubtedly help to save lives in the future. I certainly left the exercise with a renewed feeling of pride in our emergency services and admiration and respect for what they do. Thank you to all of them. Finally please be careful when buying Christmas presents. Only the other day I was at a presentation from Trading Standards who were showing us a number of items that had been confiscated, including hair straighteners that had a mounded plug and no fuse – extremely dangerous if plugged in. Ensure you check the packaging carefully because they do look quite realistic, but usually the wording, ( not the greatest English in this case) gave the game away. I hope you all enjoy a very merry Christmas with your families and friends and will look forward to what will be no doubt a very challenging New Year with Brexit, a new US president and County Council elections if not a general election.

educational needs Children have special educational needs (SEN) if they have a much greater difficulty in learning than the majority of other children of their age. The definition of SEN also includes children who, because of a disability, cannot use, or have difficulty in using, the educational facilities which other children of a similar age use. A child with SEN might have needs in connection with any of the following: ❖ communication ❖ understanding or thinking ❖ physical problems ❖ sensory difficulties ❖ emotional difficulties that require support. Many, although not all, children with SEN will also be disabled within the meaning of the Equality Act 2010. The Act requires schools not to discriminate against disabled pupils, for example, by unreasonably excluding them from normal school activities. Special educational needs assessments Local education authorities are responsible for identifying, assessing and making educational provision for children with SEN. This has to take place in a mainstream school, unless this would be incompatible with the efficient education of other children in the school. If you and the school think your child needs additional help, you or the school can request a statutory special educational needs (SEN) assessment. Additional help might include help from another member of staff, an outside specialist or the use of specialist equipment. The local authority will assess your child’s
needs and decide how they can be met. They will obtain reports from an educational psychologist, doctor and any other relevant professionals. The local authority may write a formal statement explaining what it will provide or arrange for your child. The local authority must reply to your request within six weeks. If you have not been able to reach agreement with your local authority about support for your child’s special educational needs, you may be able to appeal to the Firsttier Tribunal dealing with Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND) about the decision made by the local authority. From 1 September 2014, Education, Health and Care (EHC) plans will replace SEN statements and Learning Difficulty Assessments, and will cover children and young people from birth to age 25. An EHC plan sets out your child’s educational, health and care needs, and how they should be met. If your child already has a SEN statement, they will be transferred to the new system within the next three and a half years. Where an EHC plan is in place, a parent or young person over 16 can request a personal budget. This is funding to buy services or support set out in the EHC plan and gives parents or young people more control over the process. If you have not been able to reach agreement with your local authority about your child’s special educational needs, you may be able to appeal to the First-tier Tribunal dealing with Special Educational Needs and Disability (SEND). An appeal can only be made after mediation has been considered.
Appeals to the First-tier Tribunal You should make an appeal within two months of the date on the local authority’s letter giving their final written decision. It may be possible to make an appeal after the two months have passed if there are special circumstances which meant that you were not able to send your appeal in time. You can find information about how to appeal against a decision on the Ministry of Justice website. Special Educational Needs and Disability – Appeals – Ministry of Justice at www.justice. gov.uk Complaining to the Local Government Ombudsman (LGO) You can complain to the Local Government Ombudsman (LGO) if you think the council has failed to deal properly with your child’s needs, for example: ❖ delays in an assessment or issuing a statement ❖ failing to implement a statement ❖ failing to carry out an annual review. Complaints about special educational needs - Local Government Ombudsman at www.lgo.org.uk Independent Parental Special Education Advice (IPSEA) IPSEA offers free independent advice and support to parents and carers of children with special educational needs. In some cases, it can provide representation for parents appealing to the First-tier Tribunal. They will give free second opinions on a child’s needs and the provision required to meet those needs. Ayscoughfee Hall School Children at Ayscoughfee Hall School are enjoying a busy Autumn term, both in the classroom and beyond. Year 3 visited Flag Fen near Peterborough as part of their work on the Bronze Age and Year 6 travelled to Nottingham where they enjoyed a day at the Galleries of Justice as an introduction to their Victorian topic. Junior children have been busy in the kitchen, making Christmas cakes which they are now icing and decorating in time to take home for the end of term. Not to be outdone, the younger children have been making vegetable soup and have enjoyed using the Soup Kitchen kindly donated by SHDC last academic year. The choir have been rehearsing for the Remembrance Concert at the South Holland Centre and the school football, netball and Cross Country teams have been busy with fixtures at home and at other schools. Three of the older juniors travelled to Essex to take part in the Independent Schools Eastern Region Cross Country competition whilst several others had success in the regional art competition, with their work on display in Saffron Walden. The charitable activities of the school continue, with shoe boxes being collected for Operation Christmas Child.
Weston Hills CofE Primary School News 11+ tests have taken place and we have several children who have gained a selective place at secondary school. Year 5&6 children went on the annual residential trip to Aylmerton Field Study Centre in October. Wonderful weather and activities over a fantastic weekend! Christmas is fast approaching, and we have several trips and plans over the coming term. Ben Smith (Marathon runner) will be coming
into school to talk to pupils about his sporting life. Class 5 children will be attending Christmas Unwrapped which is run by the Baptist Church where they will be retelling the Christmas Story in a fun and creative way. The programme will include decorating a Christmas biscuit, a DVD presentation, refreshments, a rap and games. The end of November saw our Bikeability Week for children in Year 6.

Family life
Help your family
get active
W
hen it comes to heart health, it’s important that we think not only of our own cardiovascular health but also that of future generations. A study last year found that obese children and teens have as much plaque in their arteries as a 45-year-old adult, setting them up for heart disease and other serious health conditions much earlier than their parents. If you’ve got kids, of course you want to make sure they grow up fit and healthy, but you also know it’s hard to juggle work, family, and physical activity. Still, setting a healthy example is a good start; research shows that parents who are physically active increase the likelihood that their kids will be active as well. So if you’re looking for ways to get your kids involved, check out these tips.
Plan outdoor activities Set aside one day a weekend to do something active as a family: swimming in the summer, or walking in the winter, or biking is good all year round. Taking along a
picnic lunch—and splurging on some healthy snacks after a good workout—will help the day go by without a complaint.
Family Life
Take classes together Ask around at fitness clubs and community centers in your area about yoga or aerobics classes offered to parents and kids together. If your little one is too young to participate, look for classes that help you burn calories with your baby by incorporating them into your yoga moves or pushing them along during stroller workouts.
Redo your playroom Too often, a lounge or playroom is the center of laziness in a home: a comfy couch, a video-game console, a shelf full of DVDs, and nothing to encourage fitness or physical activity. There are ways to add in subtle reminders, however, without overhauling your entire room or dragging in a giant piece of workout equipment.
Set a time limit on weekly television viewing and why not leave a set of dumbells or resistance bands close by and set a family challenge for every ad break that it’s exercise time – who can do the most press ups? Squats? Star Jumps?
Make chores fun Instead of relegating each member of the family to doing separate chores by themselves, turn chores into a game you can all do together. Race to see how fast you can get the house cleaned, and then try to beat your old time the next week. Play music while you’re doing the washing, and enlist the kids to sing and dance while helping to fold and put clothes away. Take the dog for walks together, and squeeze in some running, roller-skating, or skipping while you’re at it.

Elderly care
Caring for Eldery
I
t’s difficult to witness the deterioration of physical or mental abilities in an aging parent, grandparent or other loved one. This is especially true in remembering the days when we, ourselves, were the recipients of their care. Whether or not we are well-equipped or prepared, the reality remains that many of us will be tasked with making impactful decisions associated with caring for an elderly loved one. Many of us would undoubtedly prefer that our elderly loved ones stay in our homes to ensure they are well taken care of and properly cared for. However, this situation can become very stressful for the family as a whole, since leaving an ageing parent home alone can pose a major issue if they slip and fall with no one around to help or are unable to follow hospital discharge regimens or daily routines on their own. With that said, we all know that life does not stop and give us a break when we take on new challenges or roles, and since nursing home costs continue to increase, today’s technology is striving to make that choice easier by providing families peace of mind in helping elderly loved ones age independently. Here are five things to consider when elderly parents choose to live home alone: Essential Needs Delivered to the Door Healthy eating is an essential component in ensuring physical and emotional well being. Driving can be a challenging activity for an elderly parent, which means basic needs like groceries and medicine refills need to be delivered to the door. Henry’s
W
Food & drink special
Fish & Chips
hen it comes to fish and chips there isn’t much that Trevor Smith, owner of Henry’s in Long Sutton, can’t tell you. Since leaving school 35 years ago Trevor has been in the trade and proudly opened his own shop in 2001. More recently he has been joined by his son and so is able to leave more of the frying to him and be the face of the business. Trevor commented on the importance of fresh, local produce; “We have always tried to sell locally produced potatoes,
our skinless cod comes from Grimsby which is frozen at sea also as with haddock plaice and Pollock. This ensures everything we sell is as fresh and tasty as possible.” Whilst the takeaway and 20 seater restaurant offers traditional fish and chips as well as all the other foods you would expect Trevor is aware he needs to move with the tasting taste buds of the nation and three years ago installed a pizza oven and started to sell wraps. Initially it felt a bit of a gamble Trevor explained but he has been overwhelmed with the support he continues to receive from local residents. If you would like to eat in the restaurants the prices remain exactly the same as the takeaway. Trevor added; “We are a traditional fish and chip shop making our own batter and frying in beef
dripping, but we find we need to move with the times as to what our customers would like.” Next time you are visiting or passing Long Sutton why not pop in to take a look at their varied menu which includes chicken burgers and pukka pies. Are you organising a function? Henry’s have on occasion supplied large orders to local caravan clubs and occasional charity dances local factory lunches and parties, so could offer an alternative for your event catering.

Tastes so good... Melting Snowman Biscuits INGREDIENTS 200g fondant icing sugar 6 white marshmallows (cut in half) 6 large flat biscuits (digestive are ideal) 24 mini coloured sweets or beans Tube black writing icing Cold water
Method: 1. Put the icing sugar into a bowl and add cold water a teaspoon at a time until the mixture is runny but thick enough to coat a spoon. 2. Drizzle a little more icing onto the biscuit to make it look like melting snow.
3. Draw arms using black writing icing. Stick orange sweets/ beans on for the noses using extra icing if needed. Stick three coloured sweets/ beans on each biscuit to represent the snowman’s buttons, or use writing icing for all decorations.

Pour the wine into a heavy saucepan over medium heat, and add the cinnamon, cloves, allspice, lemon rind and orange rind. Heat gently, but don’t bring to the boil. Stir in 2 tablespoons of the sugar, and once dissolved, taste to see if you’d like the wine sweeter and add more if so (take care not to burn your mouth as this will be hot!). Keep hot on medium to low heat for 20 minutes to let the flavours infuse the wine. Strain your mulled wine into heatproof glasses or mugs and serve at once, perhaps accompanied by mince pies or just enjoy by the fireside. An easy mulled wine recipe for the festive season, brimming with Christmassy spice. Don’t bother with expensive wine a cheap red will work beautifully and no one will ever know the difference! Christmas D on’t hate me, I know it’s early, but it’s time to prepare (not celebrate), as Christmas is coming. I hate tinsel and Jingle Bells before December as much as the next man, but many festive savings are only possible if you do them early. This isn’t a trivial message. I’m fed up of every January people telling me they’re skint and when I ask why they reply, “Christmas of course.” Well I can tell you exclusively here, Christmas will be on 25 December this year, so it’s not an unexpected event – there is time to plan in advance to prevent problems. So here are my seven key things you should do now that’ll save you for festivities. I’ve focused on Christmas, but the same techniques work for Chanukah, Eid, and Kwanzaa too.
Agree to not give unnecessary presents. Gifts for kids, grandchildren or your spouse are fine. Yet it’s time to stop the ever growing list of people we buy for even when we’ve no idea what they want, know we’ll end up buying tat that’ll never be used, and add heaps of pressure on ourselves to do so. I’ve been campaigning to end unnecessary gifts for six years, and more and more people are doing it. Yet it involves agreeing a pact not to buy each
Set up a Christmas cupboard. Become a tactical shopper. Work out now what necessary gifts you need to buy, and then if you spot a bargain, you can pounce on it when there’s a code, voucher or discount that makes it cheaper (I put the best in my weekly email at www.mse.me/tips). Even better, as is part of many Money Savers’ Christmas arsenal, once you buy a present, bag it, wrap it, and pop it in a Christmas cupboard – gradually getting the chores done.
other. Even the joy of giving can be selfish if it obligates someone who can’t afford it to buy back. Julia tweeted me a couple of weeks ago: “@MartinSLewis, finally took your advice and told family I can’t afford Xmas presents. What a weight off my mind. Thank you.” So contact friends and family now and make an agreement not to buy, or to cap the cost, only give homemade or even to give to charity instead. See my full ‘why Christmas presents are bad’ explanation at www.mse. me/BanChristmas.

to repay it IN FULL each month, or you’ll be charged 22.9% rep APR, which kills the gain.
Not saved for it? Do it now – then you can split the cost by three. A typical family Christmas costs around £600-£800 - a huge amount from one month’s salary alone. But if you haven’t Book your train tickets 12 weeks started saving yet, there is still time. For in advance. example, if you put £200 aside from Wherever you’re planning on spending the festive season, if your October and November you need to travel by train, IPSEditor income, it’ll spread the cost. NEeYFoT MO de book your tickets 12 weeks Save what you can. un r & is is th Martin Lew oney Saving Expert. If you’re saying you in advance. That’s when M in Chief of million people who 10 e y th kl can’t afford that, then I’m most cheap advance tickets ee in w To jo Tips tin’s Money get his Mar ail, go to launch, so you get maximum afraid you’ll need to go em ngexpert vi sa ey availability. So this is close to on cold turkey. Christmas is www.m tip .com/latest the perfect moment to be buying just one day, it’s not worth tickets if you’re away visiting friends overspending and ruining your and family for Christmas and New Year. New Year. Small savings make merry Based on roughly 90 days, 75 working days and 13 weeks left till Christmas. So, if you buy a £2 coffee every work day, just give it up now, put the cash in a Christmas kitty instead and you’ll have £150 by the big day. I’m not telling you to do this, it’s about deciding priorities. If that’s cash you need for Christmas, are you willing to make the sacrifice? Earn 5% cashback on your Christmas shopping. If you’re going to be spending for Christmas, you might as well do it on a card that pays you every time you spend on it. The no annual-fee www.americanexpress. com Platinum Everyday credit card pays you 5% cashback on your first three months’ spending (maximum £100), so get it now and you get the big cashback during the high spend pre-Christmas period. It then follows with up to 1% after. The cashback is paid after a year, so you’ll get it in time to help next Christmas, though there’s a minimum £3,000 spend to get it. That sounds a lot, but do all your normal spending on it as it pays you and you’ll be fine. Of course, only do this if you’ve a direct debit
Not used it since last Christmas? Flog it. Walk around the house and examine everything; it’s time for your annual personal stock clearance. Many old items can be worth serious cash. And if you’ve not used things for a year, whether toys, prams, old coffee makers, mobile phones, gadgets, or even clothes, why not sell them? This isn’t just about eBay or car boot sales; Facebook now has a lot of good local sales groups too that can be an easy way to do this. There are also lots of recycling sites that will pay you for old mobiles and gadgets – just make sure you do your research first to find the one that’ll give you the most.

Winter Maintenance for the Home
H
ome maintenance can continue during the winter months but obviously most of it is going to be inside. Your home maintenance checks for Autumn, Summer and Spring should have removed any likelihood of emergency outside repairs, so an indoor maintenance schedule is called for.
Some of the work will be to ensure that the home is well insulated against heat loss and repair bills are kept to a minimum. Loft insulation needs to be checked and all pipework and tanks should be insulated. Take special care with
gatevalves and stopcocks. Make sure they can be turned off and on again in the event of an emergency. If you do suffer from a frozen pipe, warm the pipe gently with a hairdryer after opening the tap fed from the pipe. Burst pipes occur when the water expands when frozen so if there is a leak, thawing gently will reveal it sooner allowing you to mend it. T
he Abarth 124 Spider is cast from the same die as the Fiat 124, and to improve it Abarth has used the same tactic as it did to change the Fiat 500 into the Abarth 595. In other words, it has added lithe looks, noise and, most importantly, muscle. The Abarth 124 Spider uses the same platform as Mazda’s MX-5 and Fiat’s 124. However, while the Fiat has been constructed to be more of a cruising vehicle, the Abarth is more hardcore – and the most performance driven of the three brands. The Abarth uses the same 1.4-litre, four-cylinder turbo-charged petrol engine as Fiat’s 124 - except in the Abarth it produces 170PS, compared with the Fiat 124’s 140PS. The Abarth’s power unit spins with the proper Italian sports car vigour you’d hope for. It feels wayward and entertaining at high revs - and you’re aware of the turbocharger when you push on. The sports car is quick to respond and the gear change is rapid and exact. The best thing about the 124 Spider, though, is the noise it makes. Popping burbles emit from the quad tailpipes when doing the 0-62mph gallop, as I found out
testing the car at Silverstone Circuit, in Northamptonshire. The two-seater Abarth will reach the magical figure in 6.8 seconds, on its way to 143mph. Fold the roof, via a simple fastener, and the Abarth 124’s sound is even more delectable. For an added dose of pleasure, the Abarth 124 has a Sport setting. Hit the button and things become louder, tighter and faster. The throttle feels more insistent, and weight is also added to the steering, making you feel even more united with the road – or race track. The 124 Spider feels most pleased driven hard, with the tail-end hunkered down over the rear wheels. Even when you go too brutally into a bend and lose traction for a jiffy, the Abarth 124 continues to play nicely. Working out what the rump of the car is going to do soon becomes second nature. On the whole, the Abarth 124 Spider is a grin maker, although your beam might falter for a moment when you see the price-tag £29,565. Yes, it’s a large lump of cash, but once you’ve heard the melodious tailpipes, felt the performance and experienced the handling for yourself, you’ll appreciate that this car is worth every single bank note.
