I really do love this time of year as there is so much to do. Country fairs, carnivals and shows are on all over the place and there is something new and exciting to experience at all of them. They run right through until September time so check the local listings and visit if you can, it’s a great day out for the whole family. In this issue we preview Pinchbeck Carnival and wonder how they are going to top last year’s superb effort. Elsewhere in the issue we offer up some information about driving lessons. Can you remember your first lesson? And, for that matter, the first time you went out in your car on your own after you passed your test? It’s an exciting time when you can truly get your first taste of freedom. Choosing the right instructor can be crucial to your success and choosing the right car to drive once you no longer need them can be just as big a decision. And how times have changed – a quick poll around the office revealed our first cars to be several Rover Metros, a Ford Fiesta and a Ford Orion. My first car was a Renault 5!! We also continue our home improvement series and look at extending your home. It’s so hard to know how to make the most out of your space but designers are getting more and more savvy when it comes to space saving designs and every nook and cranny can now be occupied! So whether you are thinking about a porch at the front or a large two storey extension at the back the trick is using the experience of the professionals and budgeting carefully! Enjoy the issue!

Kidney Research has “fantastic year” with Queensgate
New Management Team at AlleyKatz & Bounce Bar
Queensgate Shopping Centre’s 2014-2015 Charity of the Year, Kidney Research UK, is reflecting on an excellent year which has raised a grand total of £12,000! The charity has had a successful campaign of support from Queensgate since being named Charity of the Year in April 2014. Over the last 12 months, Kidney Research UK has hosted five major events in the shopping centre, helping to raise vital funds and awareness. Hannah Wysocki, Community Fundraiser at Kidney Research UK, said: “We have had a fantastic year working with the team at Queensgate and the people of Peterborough! We really appreciate the support we have had, which has helped us to raise the fantastic amount of £12,000! This allows us to continue to fund life-saving research for the three million people affected by kidney disease in the UK. “Our special thanks go to all the local businesses, organisations and independent volunteers that have helped us. Not to mention, the retailers, the Queensgate Centre Management and finally, everyone that has had their photo taken, put their change in a bucket, or had a Christmas present wrapped on behalf of Kidney Research UK.” The next charity partner is soon to be announced.
AlleyCatz Ten-pin bowling alley and Bounce Bar have announced the appointment of a new general manager at the site. Nico van den Berg has been working for the company and has swiftly moved up the ranks from a junior part time member of the team, through duty and deputy management levels. Having excelled in many areas of the business whilst at the company’s Boston venue, the Folly, Nico has finally reached the levels of commanding his own team, in his newly appointed role and location. Nico praised the outgoing manager “Firstly, I would like to take this opportunity to thank James Holland for his dedication and hard work he has done for the company and I would like to wish him luck in his venture.” A host of experience is being brought to the venue in this appointment, and whilst he has only recently been promoted to senior venue management, Nico is also a fully qualified trainer in various licensing and customer service qualifications. Being a
very hands on manager he stated “Whether it be cleaning, cooking or pulling a pint, you will always see me busy. My main focus is on customer experience and therefore I will strive to ensure all have a fun and enjoyable time during their visit to our centre.” Matt Clark director of Activ Group, the owner of the site, said “I am proud to say I helped to initially recruit Nico, he is extremely hard-working, dedicated and an asset not just to the company, but the customers he caters for.”

Five Course Dining Experience for Fairtrade Fortnight Catering and Hospitality students at New College Stamford delighted a full-house at their highly rated Gallery Restaurant for Fairtrade’s ‘Dine with a Difference’ Evening. The five course gourmet dining experience, prepared by talented students, was organised by The Stamford Fairtrade Steering Group to celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight 2015 utilising local and Fairtrade produce.
Starting with a drinks and canapé reception, the evening was a fantastic experience for students to practice and experience catering for gourmet dining and the use of Fairtrade. The Gallery Restaurant provides hands-on experience for students to showcase their talents on evenings like these and throughout the year serving lunches and evening meals to the public.
Sponsorship Appeal for Local Kickboxer Holbeach boy Oliver Maddison has qualified to be part of Team GB, representing Great Britain in Germany this October for the WFMC World Championships in Kickboxing. With kickboxing being an amateur sport it is an individual’s responsibility to find their own funding to attend the tournament. As such he is hoping for
sponsorship. Oliver is a 10 year old boy who has been very dedicated for the last 5 years. At the age of 8 he became Grand Champion of Norfolk in his category and has progressed immensely over the years. He trains at a local club Pride UK in Boston which is a non-profit club. The costings for Oliver to attend this event, with hotel accommodation, flights, tournament, Team GB kits is £699.00 per person. Due to Oliver being under18 he will need an adult to attend with him and this is a cost of £599.00. Any help would be truly appreciated. If you are able to help please contact Emma Maddison at emmamaddison1@btinternet.com SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk |

Tom’s Krazy for Kwizzes! Pinchbeck man Tom Bell has published a quiz book to test your knowledge, imagination and skill. Tom’s Krazy Kwerky Kwizzes will challenge your powers of perception and ability to think outside the box. Its original presentation and style make it an ideal pastime book for travellers, one that can be picked up and put down many times. Suitable for all ages, it is fun and enjoyable to complete as well as being informative and educational. Tom says: “My quiz book is what I consider to be an original, informative, and educational way of passing the time. It is different
from other quiz books and is made up of plays on words, cryptic clues, anagrams, and others which are ‘outside the box’. Some of the questions are meant to be challenging, others are quite straightforward. “My book should have a broad appeal to anyone who enjoys quizzes. They should complete the book because it may increase their knowledge, make them smile or laugh, and present them with some challenging thinking.” Tom’s Krazy Kwerky Kwizzes is available from Amazon (as a book and Kindle edition) or direct from the publisher, www.austinmacauley. com for £4.99.
John Hayes Frames Student’s Portrait in his Parliament Office Talented Art and Design student Megan Vellam from Spalding has had one of her portraits framed by South Holland and The Deepings MP John Hayes in his cabinet office in Westminster. As part of her course Megan was asked to draw portraiture and in the midst of the Election season and, after meeting him for herself, Megan decided to draw John.
Megan said, “I wanted to draw a picture of someone who was well respected and not just a celebrity. John Hayes is friendly and always has time for people in his constituency so I chose him”. John invited Megan to visit his Spalding office and when she presented him with the drawing John fell in love with it and asked to keep the original copy so he could frame
it in his office. John later asked Megan to meet him in Westminster where he gave her a tour of the Houses of Parliament and she was able to see her work exhibited on the wall of his cabinet office.

Make a difference to the life of a child adly, not every child has the best start in life. But that doesn’t mean that it can’t get better. And you can be a part of it. Fostering is substitute care in a family setting for a child or children who are unable to live with their birth family. There is no set time frame for fostering, it could be very short term or longer periods if it is decided that a child cannot be placed back with their own birth family. If you think that you would like to help but feel you don’t fit the right criteria then it would be helpful to put those feelings to one side as there not as many barriers are you might think. Are you renting a property? No problem - you just need to have a spare bedroom for a foster child to use. Perhaps you are a single male wanting to foster? Lincolnshire County Council welcome applications from all backgrounds regardless of gender, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation or marital status. Are you on a low income or receiving benefits? This is also not a barrier to becoming a foster carer. Whilst you would not be a legal parent or guardian you will step into a role which charges you with ensuring the child is well cared for so you will have to keep health appointments, attend meetings about your childs care and pay attention to their educational needs. You will have a support network around you which will include social workers, health professionals and Lincolnshire’s Child Services. But most of all you need to be understanding and ready for a challenging time as children can arrive feeling confused, upset or angry. If you are prepared to put the time and effort in then you really can make a difference to a child’s life and you are just what the service is looking for. If you are interested then get in touch with the fostering hotline on 0800 0933099.

Why it is the perfect time to get moving Is it just a rumour or does the time of year affect the saleability of your home? ❱ BY HAYLEY HAMMOND, SIMPLY PROPERTY
s the weather improves during Spring/Summer it is traditionally the busiest time on an estate agents calendar and 2015 seems to be no different. The weather is better, there are longer daylight house, and your garden looks far better than it does over winter. There is also the looming pressure for parents of moving before the start of the new school year. All of this means there are more buyers looking for property than any other time of the year. That’s not to mention the recent changes in stamp duty which has given the market a significant boost. Someone who buys a house for £275,000 will now have an extra £5000 in their back pockets, which is not to be sniffed at! So how can you maximise your chances of selling this Spring? We’ve all heard about tricks such as brewing coffee and baking bread before someone comes around for a viewing, but here are some of the less subtle ways to make your house stand out.
A
Try before you Buy Make an anonymous call to a potential agent to see them in action. Listen carefully to how they deal with your request. Look for enthusiasm and professionalism, and ask how they market and sell. Many buyers want to view at inconvenient times, say 7.30pm on a Tuesday, or when you’re on holiday. But can the agent provide this service? To get the sale your agent needs to be a flexible as possible. Price to maximise internet hits Look at the cut-off point of pricing bands when you search on the main property websites. If you market your home at just over a price band, you may miss some of your potential audience. It’s a simple fact, so be realistic when it comes to pricing your property. Don’t be flattered by agents who offer to market your property at an unrealistic price, all that will happen is your property won’t sell and you may eventually end up with a lower offer than if you had been realistic in the first instance.
together. If you need a mortgage for your next move, make sure you have an in-principle offer agreed early on. It’s often not getting the offer that’s the hard part but keeping a chain together – time is the biggest frustration for buyers and if there is anything you know may crop up then deal with it in advance. Target prospective buyers Talk to your agent about the different people who may view your home. Get the best possible understanding of them, and alter the interior and your sales pitch to match this. For example, if you know a family is coming to view your home, put a few toys around the place and make it as child-friendly as possible. For a young couple, hide the toys! Minimal and modern decoration is the best choice here. De-clutter It should come as no surprise that this appears in our top tips and is the oldest piece of advice
in the book, but probably one of the most important. Be ruthless. Buyers need to see clear-cut, well-presented space and each room must have a purpose, even if that means you beg borrow and steal from friends and family to turn that junk room into a guest bedroom. Remember, it only takes one buyer and one pro-active agent to successfully sell a house! If you are thinking of selling your home call Simply Property to arrange a no obligation free valuation on 01775 640622. Don’t forget they will save you money too as they only charge 0.85% + vat estate agency fees. Be Flexible If you really want to sell, be prepared to vacate to help a buyer. It may mean all the inconvenience of renting for a while and paying for storage, but it can make the difference between selling and staying put. Marketing Make sure your agent gives your home the publicity it deserves in the press and online. Today the internet is the major player, but local advertising can drive traffic to websites. A potential buyer reads an advertisement, likes the look of your house, then jumps on the internet to get the brochure, photographs and floor plans. How often will your property be seen and by who

Advice
Small Claims ❱ BY LISA BARWELL This information is about small claims cases. A small claims case is a defended case which the court has allocated to the small claims track. There are special rules about small claims cases and the procedures are described in this information. In most cases, the court will not order solicitors’ costs to be paid by the losing party in a small claims case, and if you instruct a solicitor you will have to pay the costs yourself. For this reason most claimants deal with a small claim without the help of a solicitor. It is possible to have the help of a friend or ‘lay representative.
Financial value of the case If the value of a case is £10,000 or less, it will generally be allocated to the small claims track. However, if it is a personal injury claim, it will be allocated to the small claims track only if the value of the claim for the personal injuries themselves is not more than £1,000. If the claimant is a tenant, and is claiming against their landlord because they want their landlord to carry out repairs or other work to the premises and the cost of the repairs or work is £1,000 or less, the case will be allocated
to the small claims track. In some cases, even if the value of the case is more than £10,000 the court could allocate the case to the small claims track. If this happens the usual rule about costs does not apply and if the claimant loses the case, they may have to pay the defendant’s solicitor’s costs. However, if the claimant wins the case, the defendant could be ordered to pay the claimant’s costs.
Types of claims in the small claims track The most common types of claim in the small claims track are: • compensation for faulty services provided, for example, by builders, dry cleaners or g arages • compensation for faulty goods, for example, televisions or washing machines which go w rong • disputes between landlords and tenants, for example, rent arrears or compensation for not doing repairs • wages owed or money in lieu of notice. If a case is complex, the judge may refer it to another track for a full hearing, even if it is below the financial limit of that track.
Before applying to the court You must try and settle a claim before taking court action. If you do not try to settle first, the court may penalise you. So, for example, if a television does not work, there is no point in applying to the court immediately for compensation - you must contact the shop which sold it first to try to solve the problem, and only use the court if you cannot get the problem solved by negotiation. The court will expect you to make your claim in writing, giving the other person a reasonable time to reply – a month is usual. You should also warn them that you will take court action if they fail to reply within the given time. You may be able to sort out your claim by using mediation if the other party agrees. This is where an impartial third party, called a mediator, helps both parties to reach a mutually-agreeable solution to a problem. Sometimes even if you start a claim, the court might refer your case to a mediator. You can find a local mediation provider by using the tool on the Ministry of Justice website at www.justice.gov.uk. You will be charged a fixed fee. You can find further information about mediation on the Civil Mediation Council website at www.civilmediation.org The court also offers free telephonebased mediation through its Small Claims Mediation Service. This is available to all small claims which are defended, and if both parties agree to it.
Starting a claim As a claimant, you start a claim by filling in a claim form (N1). Claim forms are available from local courts, and from HM Courts and Tribunals service at www.justice.gov.uk.

Red Queen
by Simon Scarrow
by Victoria Aveyard
The fierce courage of the men and women of the Greek Resistance is brought to vivid life in Sunday Times bestseller Simon Scarrow’s powerful new novel of World War II. 1938. A perfect summer on the Greek island of Lefkas for three young people untroubled by the simmering politics of Europe. Peter, visiting from Germany while his father leads an archaeological dig, has become close friends with locals Andreas and Eleni. As the world slides towards conflict and Peter is forced to leave, they swear to meet again. 1943: Andreas and Eleni have joined the partisan forces resisting the German invasion. Peter has returned - now a dangerously well-informed enemy intelligence officer. A friendship formed in peace will turn into a desperate battle between enemies sworn to sacrifice everything for the countries that they love.
This is a world divided by blood - red or silver. The Reds are commoners, ruled by a Silver elite in possession of god-like superpowers. And to Mare Barrow, a seventeen-year-old Red girl from the povertystricken Stilts, it seems like nothing will ever change. That is, until she finds herself working in the Silver Palace. Here, surrounded by the people she hates the most, Mare discovers that, despite her red blood, she possesses a deadly power of her own. One that threatens to destroy the balance of power. Fearful of Mare’s potential, the Silvers hide her in plain view, declaring her a long-lost Silver princess, now engaged to a Silver prince. But this is a world of betrayal and lies, and Mare has entered a dangerous dance - Reds against Silvers, prince against prince, and Mare against her own heart.

School News
Calling teachers, PTA members, pupils… Do you have exciting news at your school? If you would like to share your school news with the local residents please send details to editor@simplyspalding.co.uk
Spalding Grammar School We invited John Hayes of the Conservative Party and Dan Wilshire (an old boy) of the Green Party to address our students and answer any questions that they may have about the General Election. The previous week we heard from Labour, UKIP and the Liberal Democrats. To help our students understand the General Election, how it works and why it’s important to vote, SGS are holding an inter-House mock election within school. Interestingly, Dan Wilshire, this year’s parliamentary candidate for the Green Party, took part in this mock election when he was a student here....evidence to support just how much of an impact this school event can have on improving our students awareness and interest in current affairs. We have student volunteers to represent the main parties in the UK; Conservative, Labour, Liberal Democrats, Green and UKIP and
they have been campaigning for their parties and their policies since we returned to school following the Easter break, and will continue to do so until Election day. There are plenty of party posters throughout the school, and lots of students are also promoting their campaigns using the other resources available to them - the school televisions and website and our weekly newsletter.
Students will be able to vote for their chosen party and candidate of choice during Form Period on 7th May in the Sports Hall. We are encouraging the school community to get involved in the pre-election hype, take the opportunity to vote for who/what they believe in, and we look forward to hearing who managed to gain the most votes in the coming weeks!
Wisbech Grammar School Two top-flight flautists at Wisbech Grammar School have scored a notable success by gaining distinctions at the highest grade in the latest round of the Trinity College London instrumental examinations. The achievement by Lauren Mounfield (18) at grade eight comes hard on the heels of attaining a distinction with a near perfect score on the saxophone at the board’s top grade in November. Besides performing in numerous school based ensembles on the flute and saxophone, Lauren also plays the saxophone with the March-based Alan Norris Big Band and Training Swing Band. Richeldis France, who is still just 15 years old, has been learning the flute for less than five years. She has already achieved a merit at grade eight on the violin and she has obtained a good pass at grade seven on the piano. As a violinist Richeldis has been playing with the Norfolk Symphony Orcherstra and the Ely Sinfonia for two years. Director of music Mr Gabriel Fitzsimmons said: “Given the intensity of the Lent term, when pupils are focused upon coursework and external exam preparation, to undertake a practical assessment at this level is a particularly demanding challenge. “For Lauren to follow her earlier success on the saxophone with this achievement on the flute is the outstanding mark of a dedicated and hard-working musician – and for Richeldis to achieve a distinction at grade eight in such a short time frame is exemplary.”
Spalding High School On April 23, students participated in their mock election. In the run up to the election pupils were given information in assemblies, including presentations by five Year 9 girls about the five main parties in England. Pupils were then encouraged to go away and research and discuss key election issues in both their tutor time and at home. Following hustings the previous week, the school had been filled with political conversation and debate in the run up to polls opening. The end result, on a turnout of 55%, was quite close on the percentage of votes. Final results were: *Conservatives: 196 (37.7%) *Greens: 158 (30.3%) *Labour: 57 (11%) *Liberal Democrats: 26 (5%) *UKIP: 83 (16%) However, the use of first past the post meant that the final tally of seats won gave the Conservatives a majority of 3, in a parliament of 41 MPs. Mr Hempsall, the teacher running the election, remarked that “given we are consistently told that young people have zero interest in politics, this election has been interesting. The girls have been discussing little else at times and it has been really pleasing to see such engagement with important issues.” Overall, the pupils became more engaged in intense political debate and discussion, and were left eagerly waiting to see if their results matched the national picture on May 7th. When not busy with political issues Year 7 students found time for their Rivers Day Geography trip and students attending the Schools Trampoline Competition were gratified to win first place in both the Intermediate and Advanced categories. Their lifecycle can be anywhere from a couple of weeks to many months, so a few fleas can rapidly over-run your house. You‘ll notice your pets scratching if they are infested. Simply running a comb through their coat may reveal specks of blood, or even live fleas. Fleas spread easily because they can jump up to 10cm. Ticks Ticks on the other hand live in long grass. They transfer to you or your pet for a meal, and then drop off. They can spread Lyme disease so remove them safely with a cheap and simple tick twister. Never pull off ticks with your fingers, because the head may stay buried, and this can cause infections. How To Control Them! Dogs Dogs will scratch themselves raw if they are infested with fleas. Regularly use a spot-on treatment that kills fleas and ticks. Brush your dog and treat his bedding. Just washing it isn’t enough if fleas are present. You’ll need to spray it with a flea treatment. Rabbits / Guinea Pigs Use a spot-on treatment to keep them flea free. Because rabbits and guinea pigs don’t usually mix with others, or catch fleas from wild animal by hunting them, they may not pick up parasites. Be watchful though, and if in doubt treat them. Remember that house rabbits can catch fleas from cats and dogs.
Cats Cats generally loathe any kind of spray or powder. If your moggie does, use a spot-on treatment. A flea comb or tick twister will help tease any out whilst you wait for it to work. Keep a glass of water beside you to put live fleas in. You’ll have to be quick though! Caged Birds It isn’t likely your bird will have fleas, but they can catch mites and lice. An anti-mite spray is usually enough if you spot any scratching.
Take Care Dog flea products poison many cats each year as a result of accidental application, or close contact to a treated dog. Symptoms include drooling, tremors and seizures. It’s not safe to swap your flea and tick treatments between pets. If you are thinking about flea and tick control it’s worth worming your pet too, as fleas carry tapeworm larvae. Parasites will harm your pets and they may spread to your family too. With simple low cost treatment available there’s no time like the present to de-flea your pets.

BBQs
Enjoying Summer Barbecuing Our handy how-to guide to barbecuing k BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN f you don’t already own a barbecue then now is the time to go out and buy one for when the weather really starts to warm up and barbecue season gets into full swing. When buying your barbecue your first question is likely to be gas or charcoal? With this it really is a matter of personal preference. Following this comes the question of cost and finally the size. Many people enjoy cooking with charcoal. It is easy to light and it burns cleanly. The downside is that charcoal takes a while to get to the required heat to cook so you need to allow plenty of time between lighting the barbecue and putting food onto the grill. That said, food cooked this way gives a classic barbecue taste. In terms of ease a gas barbecue fits the bill. Generally, once lit you can put food on within a few minutes. Also some gas barbecues are fitted with gas burners and warming racks which can free up precious space on your grill!! You can also really go to town with a gas barbecue size-wise, owning something resembling an outdoor kitchen if
I
you so desire. A disposable barbecue starts at £2 - £3, charcoal barbecues from around £10 and gas barbecues start at around £50 however the sky is the limit and there are models with extras such as rotisseries which run into thousands of pounds. Whichever you choose you will also need to buy your accessories. Barbecue tools (tongs, skewers etc), mitts and basting and marinading utensils. Once you have your barbecue lit and ready to cook you need to make sure you cook safely to ensure you do not end up with food poisoning. Remember to keep food cool – salads, dips, cooked rice and cream for desserts should be kept refrigerated until needed.
“Remember to keep food cool – salads, dips, cooked rice and cream for desserts should be kept refrigerated until needed.”
Here are some hints and tips from the NHS Livewell website: • Ensure the barbecue is sufficiently hot. For coal barbecues make sure the coals are glowing red with a powdery grey surface. • Thoroughly thaw frozen meat before cooking. • Turn meat regularly and move it around the barbecue to cook it evenly. • Most meats (apart from steak) are only safe when piping hot in the centre, no pink meat is visible and any juices are clear. If in doubt, cut the meat at the thickest part to check. • Germs from raw meat can get onto your hands and transfer to cooked meat which can result in food poisoning. This is called cross contamination and there are things you can do to safeguard yourself against it: • Always wash your hands after touching raw meat. • Use separate utensils for raw and uncooked meat. • Never put cooked meat on a surface which has had raw meat on it. • Keep raw meat in a sealed container away from ready to eat foods such as bread rolls and salad. • Never wash raw chicken as it can spread Campylobacter bacteria. • Don’t put raw meat next to cooked meat on the barbecue.

Learning to Drive
Choosing a Driving Instructor You’ve got your provisional license and are raring to go. Choosing the right driving instructor is an important decision so make sure you choose wisely ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN he average cost of a driving lesson is £24, so you need to be sure that your money is being put to good use. People have different criteria when looking for a good match for them so it is important to do your research and, more importantly, have a good conversation with a potential instructor before you book a lesson. Start by calling an instructor and having an initial conversation. First and foremost, make sure they cover your area (especially if you use a national driving school) and parts of the route which will be on your test. If you are at college or sixth form are they able to pick you up from there for lessons? Staying local really is your best bet as you will have some familiarity with the roads. Speak to the instructor about their qualifications. To charge you money they must be ADI approved. To gain this qualification an instructor will have had an enhanced security check as well as a theory test, a driving ability and fitness test and assessment of their ability to instruct learner drivers. Having an ADI approved instructor gives you the confidence that your instructor is well trained and able to get you through your test. You can also ask about how long they have been an instructor and also what their success rates are like.
T
Ask about cost and what you get for that money such as how long a lesson lasts. Find out if there are any discounts available for booking several lessons in one go or for a first lesson. Ask about how many lessons on average a learner driver needs before they are ready for their test to help you budget properly (remember that this is just an estimate, however, everyone is different!). It might also be a good idea to ask about the car you will learn to drive in as different instructors will have different cars. Ask about the way a typical lesson is structured, that is, find out what you’ll be doing with your hour! You can also think forward to when you have passed your test – some instructors run courses for newly qualified drivers. As well as giving you confidence on the road you will be able to have the guidance of your instructor in areas you previously would not have covered such as motorway driving. Finally, remember that it really is a personal preference. Once you’ve had a conversation with a couple of driving schools you might start to get a feel for the one which is the best fit for you. From there, it’s time to book the first lesson and take the plunge – the business of buying your own car and sorting tax and insurance can wait until another day!
“...make sure they cover your area (especially if you use a national driving school) and parts of the route which will be on your test.”

Health & Beauty
How about a new Summer ‘do? Summer is the perfect time to pay a visit to the hairdresser and change your look for the warmer months ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
ummer sun can wreak havoc with your hair. To start with, it can dry out, especially the ends so visiting the hairdresser for a trim at the very least before the weather warms right up is a must. We tend to go out and socialise more in Summer so if you tend to put your hair up and out of the way every day or have had the same style for a while then maybe it is time to head to the hairdresser and get yourself a brand new summer look. If you are nervous about going for a completely new style then think subtle – something like an ombre through the ends can change your look, even though it is only a little lighter than your natural shade. Having some layers put through long hair can give it some real volume or getting a fringe cut in can transform your face. Take the time to discuss with your hairdresser your current hair regime – do you love to style your hair or do you have very little time to spend on it? Do you love your colour or would you like to try something new? When it comes to colour your stylist will know best. How well your hair will do with colour relies on several different things. The general condition of your hair will dictate how well it holds on to the colour. If you are looking at blonde colours then the shade of colour you can go will be determined by the amount of bleach your hair can cope with. If you opt for reds, you may find yourself having to take more regular trips to the hairdresser to get the colour topped up. And with dark colours take your skin tone into consideration. With all of these variables it really is the best idea to leave it to the experts as, let’s be honest, getting it wrong and having to leave the house with green hair is nobody’s idea of fun! You hairdresser will be up to date with the latest hair trends and will be able to recommend products to help you achieve your best look. While in the salon, if you are heading off on a
S
beach holiday then it is a good idea to talk about how to protect your hair and colour while you are away. Swimming in the pool and lounging on the beach in the sun can affect your hair. The best option all round is to wear a hat but failing that look at UV products such as UV based hairsprays or, even better, a leave in conditioner. There are also products to help out with the frizz should the humidity become too much for your hair. Arm yourself with the right products to ensure a stress-free summer for you and your hair! Focus on Pinchbeck
Pinchbeck Carnival 2015 Pinchbeck welcomes you to the Best of British ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN his year’s festivities kick off with the annual bingo night which is held in the marquee at Rotten Row playing field on June 12 at 6:30pm for a 7pm start. The following day the Carnival procession leaves from Wimberley Way at 12 noon and will arrive at the field at approximately 12:45pm. Look out for Carnival Queen Chloe Young and Carnival Princesses Melissa Wales and Elizabeth Neal. After the procession comes an afternoon of fun and games at the field. Entry to the Carnival is £3 per adult and £1.50 per child. The star attraction in the main arena this year are The Galloping Acrobatics who will be performing two different 30 minute horse shows, including lively commentary from horseback, skipping horses, equestrian dances and choreographed routines. The Breaston Highlanders will be performing again as will the Abbey High Fliers. Weather permitting it is hoped there will be a flypast by a Lancaster. Sticking with this year’s theme, Best of British, the handicrafts competition will once again be held in the marquee however 2015 sees an addition of a cookery category. Entry charges for the competition are just 25p per item for children and 50p per item for adults. Children’s categories include creating greetings cards, designing posters, making models, making a British Flag, creating a picture from handprints and fingerprints, decorating small cakes and biscuits and painting, all within the theme. Adults can enter their favourite categories from knitting or crochet, cross stitch or embroidery, greetings cards, flower arrangements, needlework, painting and photographic. The new cookery category challenges budding cooks and bakers to show off their skills in the following disciplines: Victoria Sponge, 4 small cakes, afternoon tea, savoury pies or pasties and sugar craft. Alongside all of this there will also be many stalls, a fancy dress competition, rides and an onion rolling contest. After the Carnival there will be evening entertainment from local band Bad to the Bone.
T
On the Sunday, to draw the celebrations to a close there will be a United Church service of worship at 10:30am followed by Sunday lunch at 12:30 for 1pm. Tickets are £7 and need to be purchased in advance from Chris who can be contacted on 01775 680444. There will also be a fun quiz and a raffle.

Extend Your Home Using the right people is key to a beautiful, hassle free extension ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN here are many reasons for putting an extension on your home. Generally it’s because people want more space. It may be that it’s easier and cheaper than moving to a larger house. It may also be done strategically to add extra value to the property for the future. In this case it’s almost always extra bathrooms and larger kitchens! If you are new to large house projects then it’s not a good idea to try and take everything on yourself. Begin with an architect. An architect can be as involved or not as you require. They can manage the entire building process or simply draw your designs and have no further input. They can also help with planning consent, building regulation certification, recommending a builder, monitoring progress, standards and safety on site, arranging input from specialists where required and overseeing construction to completion. When speaking to an architect take a look at their portfolio and see if they have been involved in any projects similar to yours. Take the time to ask any questions. Make sure that they understand exactly what you want to achieve and make sure you discuss your budget otherwise it makes planning difficult. As a guide, allow £100 - £200 per square foot of development. The quality of fixtures and fittings will determine whether the cost is at the higher or lower end of the band. Whatever you plan always allow a contingency budget for any
T
unforeseen problems which may crop up. As a rule of thumb 10% should cover it. Once you have decided on your architect they will come over and take measurements of your existing property and then go away and prepare your plans. The next thing likely to come up, dependent on the type of alterations you are looking to make, is planning permission. When looking for the right builder there are several things you can do to make sure you hire the right person. First and foremost speak to friends and relatives about who they have used in the past as personal recommendation is always a good starting point. When you meet them make sure their areas of expertise match the project you are putting forward. Ask about their experience in building projects similar to yours and ask for references and referrals. Any good builder will happily answer these questions for you and be able to point you towards previous customers who you can speak to. Also, look for signs of quality from the builder themselves. How in-depth are they when discussing your project? What building products do they use? How well do they answer any questions and concerns you may have about the job? Once you are happy that you have found the right people for the job then it’s time to take the plunge and begin the process of adding your extension.
According to the government website www.planningportal.gov.uk an extension or addition to your house is considered to be permitted development, not requiring an application for planning permission, subject to the following limits and conditions: • • • • • • •
No more than half the area of land around the “original house” would be covered by additions or other buildings. No extension forward of the principal elevation or side elevation fronting a highway. No extension to be higher than the highest part of the roof. Single-storey rear extension must not extend beyond the rear wall of the original house by more than three metres if an attached house or by four metres if a detached house. In addition, outside Article 2(3) designated land and Sites of Special Scientific Interest the limit is increased to 6m if an attached house and 8m if a detached house until 30 May 2019. These increased limits (between 3m and 6m and between 4m and 8m respectively) are subject to the prior notification of the proposal to the Local Planning Authority and the implementation of a neighbour consultation scheme. If objections are received, the proposal might not be allowed. Maximum height of a single-storey rear extension of four metres.
• Extensions of more than one storey must not extend beyond the rear wall of the original house by more than three metres. • Maximum eaves height of an extension within two metres of the boundary of three metres. • Maximum eaves and ridge height of extension no higher than existing house. • Side extensions to be single storey with maximum height of four metres and width no more than half that of the original house. • Two-storey extensions no closer than seven metres to rear boundary. • Roof pitch of extensions higher than one storey to match existing house. • Materials to be similar in appearance to the existing house. • No verandas, balconies or raised platforms. • Upper-floor, side-facing windows to be obscure-glazed; any opening to be 1.7m above the floor. • On designated land no permitted development for rear extensions of more than one storey. • On designated land no cladding of the exterior. • On designated land no side extensions.

Gardening
Landscaping Your Garden The smallest of spaces can be transformed into a beautifully landscaped, functional garden ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN he perfect garden can take on many different forms. For some, a large area for entertaining ticks all the boxes. For others attracting and supporting wildlife is the priority. Lawns, borders, hedges and fences add beauty, but in what proportion? And then there are the extras, like water features, gazebos and decking. Once you start, where do you stop! However beautiful your garden, it might be that it just doesn’t quite fit in with your lifestyle. Planning and landscaping can solve your problems. Begin by clearly defining what your garden needs in order to be functional for your particular lifestyle. Large patio spaces, play areas for children, room to grow vegetables? Begin by sketching out a few ideas. At this stage keep it informal and basic, looking at shapes and how they can work together. You don’t have to go right back to the beginning, if you have any features and plants that you enjoy then keep them in place or integrate them into the plans elsewhere within the garden. Take the sun and wind into account. These factors are especially important when planning a patio area. An area which sits in the shade all day is not suitable, nor is an area which is breezy. Keep an eye on where the sun is at different times of the day. Also consider the windows which look out onto the garden, have a look out of those and imagine your new garden from that perspective. Have a look at the soil quality in your garden before you plan your plants. Broadly speaking, soil can be clay, sandy, silty, peaty, chalky or loamy. Different plants enjoy different types of soil. For example, an Aster loves clay soil while Tulips will thrive in sandy soil. Make sure you have done your research before you plan your flower beds. Remember, if your soil doesn’t match up with your plans there is a lot of advice in gardening magazines and online as to how you can get around this. Similarly, if a vegetable garden is part of your plans then you will also need to allocate preparation time
T
to this as well. As important as soil quality is, light and shade also influence plants so this will also need to be taken into account. Also, when choosing your plants make sure you take into consideration how large they can potentially grow. Whilst they might be small and perfect for the spot you’ve chosen when you buy them, if they grow massively each year then they might not be appropriate! Once you’ve got a good idea going it’s time to put some more detailed plans together. At this stage, whilst your ideas may look visually stunning, consider how much time you will be able to dedicate to your garden. If you do not have much time for gardening then avoid high maintenance plants. Also, have a look at other gardens for inspiration, you may find something you never even considered ends up becoming a focal point! If you are not confident then you may wish to get a professional landscaper in to assist with your plans (and to actually implement them). In this way you will be able to use their wealth of experience to make sure you get it right first time.
“...consider how much time you will be able to dedicate to your garden. If you do not have much time for gardening then avoid high maintenance plants.”

his Infinity is no oil painting, but it’s not ugly either. The car is different, in a curvaceous sort
of way. Touches like the wavy bonnet arches, in-yer-face front grille and glitzy daytime running lights give it a blend of angry, yet sophisticated. Infinity is the posh arm of Nissan – so luxury abounds, but what about practicality? Well, the Q70 Hybrid offers loads of headroom, and legroom is generous in the front. The rear is a different story. Three adults will fit, but legroom is limited. The boot isn’t amazing either. There is 350 litres of load space in the Hybrid due to the electrical gadgetry stuffed behind the rear seat. This means you’re not going to get much else in once your kid’s buggy or your set of golf clubs is in there. The rear seats don’t fold down either, limiting your options further. The cabin is awesome though. The rounded dashboard is distinct because it’s so curvy and boisterous. German interiors are more logically laid out, but the Infinity does make a refreshing change. Behind the wheel, the Q70 Hybrid’s 3.5 litre petrol-powered lump and extra electric motor means you’re in for a speedy drive.
Acceleration is creamy smooth, yet you feel pinned to your seat when the pedal is to the metal. Zero to 62mph takes only 5.3 seconds, and the top speed is 155mph. The Infinity glides along and almost does the driving for you. Its seven-speed gearbox is silky and flawless and, with the press of a button, you can kick the whole car into sport mode if you want even more athleticism. I did a Kettering to Lincoln 150mile return trip and honestly felt fresh and relaxed after mile munching up and down the A1. The car is also good at carving through the corners on rural routes, but its steering is a little light so it doesn’t always feel as planted as German rivals like BMW and Merc. The Q70 is safe, too. Six airbags, intelligent cruise control, forward collision warning, lane departure warning and lane departure prevention all help to instil a sense of confidence. The Q70’s electric motor is there to perk up performance economically, so an official figure of 45.6mpg and 145g/km of CO2 emissions is no surprise. The Infiniti will even stay in electric-only mode if you keep at around 20mph and you don’t bury your right foot into the carpet. What’s more, the car’s eco and normal driving modes simply
relax the throttle response, helping you get a little bit more petrol for your pounds. Speaking of cash, you’re looking at forking out north of £40,000 for the Infiniti and over £47,000 for the Premium Tech trimmed Hybrid on test here, but you do get a lot of machine for your money. The car comes with a stack of kit on the inside and outside. Sat-Nav is standard, you get leather heated and ventilated seats, front and rear parking sensors, LED headlights, and meaty 18 inch alloy wheels. On the whole, the Infiniti Q70 Hybrid is a quick, luxury saloon with an ability to deliver you to your destination effortlessly. It is a great company car choice because of its low emissions, but it’s not as badgecool as a BMW, Mercedes-Benz or Audi. That said; it’ll tell the world you’re a little different – and you’ll be able to find your motor in the sea of German executive saloons in your firm’s car park.
