10% off for Senior Citizen Tuesdays a Andy Molsom of Molsom and Associates, has been nominated for personnel the ‘Optometrist of theon year’ award as part of the Macular Society’s Awards for Excellence. The nomination recognises his exceptionally good practice in the care of people with macular degeneration. Andy Molsom, who was also nominated for the awards in 2013, said: “I am very proud to have been nominated again for this award. It’s a great honour that a patient has thought my care is worthy for this Award of Excellence”. Cathy Yelf, Chief Executive of the Macular Society, said: “It is clear from his nomination that Mr Molsom works hard to improve the lives of people affected by macular degeneration, with excellence in advice and information. We are extremely grateful for his efforts in Spalding.” Age-related macular degeneration affects the central vision and is the most common cause of sight loss in the UK. More people are affected as our population ages. Kathleen Anna Pell, who nominated Mr Molsom for the award, said: “By making sure I had regular examinations on my eyes Mr Molsom quickly noticed the change in my right eye that dry macular had changed to wet macular and arranged treatment without delay.

“Mr Molsom is well known in this area as a competent and caring optometrist and I recommend him for this award.” “By investing in the very latest technology, we are able to deliver an exceptional service for our patients. The latest 3D OCT retinal digital scanner helps us to find those patients who are at risk of sight problems, especially wet AMD, at such an early stage that treatment can make a real difference to retaining good eyesight and with it independence for our patients.” commented Andy Molsom The Macular Society is the national charity for anyone affected by central vision loss. We provide free information and support to improve lives today and we fund research so that one day we can overcome macular disease.

Perhaps you are a single person looking to open your house and heart to a foster child? Applicants are welcomed from all backgrounds. This Foster Care Fortnight (16th – 29th May) Lincolnshire Fostering Service is asking the public to consider if they have the time in their life and love in their heart to care for a child or young person in need. Nationally around 9,070 new foster families are needed this year alone to provide loving, stable homes for vulnerable children and young people. In Lincolnshire, there is a particular need for foster carers of: • Children and young people with additional needs and disabilities • Older children and young people (including those who have been remanded to local authority care) Unfortunately, there is a shortage of foster carers coming forward for these groups of children and young people. hursday, May 5th is the date of the election for Police and Crime Commissioners (PCC’s) across the Country including the Lincolnshire PCC. At the last election Alan Hardwick was elected. Alan is not standing again and therefore at the time of going to press there were three candidates to choose from, details below. ❖ The PCC will have a responsibility to hold the police to account on behalf of the public. They will also have to hold the chief constable to account for the performance of the force area’s officers and staff. ❖ They will provide the local link between the police and communities, working to turn the desires and ambitions of the public, in terms of policing and crime reduction, into action. ❖ They will receive all the funding relating to policing and reducing crime and after consulting the chief constable, will be responsible for how it is spent. ❖ They will set the strategic direction and aims for Lincolnshire Police through the Police and Crime Plan and set the local precept (council tax charge). ❖ They will appoint the chief constable and remove them from office if necessary (as long as the relevant legal requirements are met). ❖ They will have wider responsibilities, including responsibility for delivering community safety and reducing crime, commissioning victims’ services, the ability to make crime and disorder reduction grants within the Lincolnshire area, and a duty to deliver better value for money or improve the effectiveness of policing.

Day to day operations The PCC does not ‘run’ the police force. Chief constables continue to be responsible for the day to day operations of the police, but they are accountable to the public via the police and crime commissioner.

Three candidates The three candidates at the time of writing are Marc Jones (Conservative), Victoria Ayling (UKIP) and Lucinda Preston (Labour). Here are brief comments from all three, which I hope will help you come to a decision.

“The PCC does not ‘run’ the police force. Chief constables continue to be responsible for the day to day operations of the police.” Marc Jones, who is currently the executive member for finance at Lincolnshire County Council said: “My priorities will be boosting both neighbourhood and rural policing, as well as working with our hard working officers to ensure victims of crime are at the forefront of everything we do. I will also be a police and crime commissioner who will work in a positive way with our government and MPs to get the best funding deal for Lincolnshire Police.” Victoria Ayling, also a Lincolnshire County Councillor and trained barrister said “Currently I believe Lincolnshire residents deserve better from their police. I am not blaming the officers but the systems they have to work within. For example, an obsession with targets means red tape is preventing bobbies being on the beat. Meanwhile, many residents feel it is becoming pointless calling the police if they are a victim of some crime, other than to get a crime number for insurance purposes.” Lucinda Preston is the Head of English and Associate Assistant Headteacher at a school in Sleaford. She said “I see the role of Police and Crime Commissioner as two-fold: firstly, to hold Lincolnshire’s Chief Constable to account on behalf of the people of Lincolnshire to ensure that police services are effectively and efficiently delivered for the benefit of this large and diverse county; secondly to engage with those who live and work in Lincolnshire, including those people who are most vulnerable in our society, to further identify their needs and the best ways to support them.” Whoever you decide to support, please ensure you vote – your vote is important!

Advice

About

redundancy R edundancy is a form of dismissal. It’s where you are dismissed because the work you did is no longer needed, for example, if your employer goes out of business. Situations where you can be made redundant include: ❖ your employer’s business, or part of the business, has stopped operating or has gone bust ❖ your employer’s business is failing ❖ your employer is moving into a new line of business which no longer needs your skills ❖ a new system or technology is being introduced which means your job is no longer necessary ❖ your job no longer exists because the work is being done by other people, following a reorganisation of the workplace ❖ your employer’s business, or the work you are doing, moves to another area ❖ your employer’s business is taken over ❖ your employer was the sole owner of the business and they die

Your skills are no longer required You can be made redundant if your employer is moving into a new line of business which no longer needs your skills.

Reorganisation of the workplace You may be made redundant if your employer reorganises the business to improve its efficiency, or brings in new

technology so that fewer people are needed to do the same amount of work. You may also be made redundant if a new process or system is introduced which means that your job is no longer needed. However, you won’t always be redundant just because a new process or system has been introduced. Some new systems or technology may just mean that the same job can be done differently, rather than replacing jobs or creating a different job. If this is the case, you shouldn’t be made redundant. Sometimes, a reorganisation of the workplace or introduction of new technology mean that the tasks you would normally do are given to other people. If this means that the job you were doing no longer exists, your employer can make you redundant. If you and your colleagues are union members, you should talk to your union rep about the problem. Even if there is other work available for you to do in the company, you will still be redundant. It’s the fact that there is less need for the work you were employed to do which makes you redundant, regardless of whether other work is available. However, if you are made redundant, your employer should offer you suitable alternative work wherever possible. Your employer may move their business to another area. You can be made redundant if your employer stops carrying on business in the place where you were employed to work. Your employment contract may say

It is quite common for employees to be dismissed unfairly when a busines s is taken over so if you’re made redundant when a busin ess is taken over, you should get expert advice urgently.

you have to work anywhere the employer asks you to. This is called a mobility clause. However, even if you have a mobility clause, you can still be made redundant if the business moves and you aren’t able to move to the new area. For example, it may not be practical for you to move a long way from home if you have childcare responsibilities. This is a complicated issue.

Your employer’s business is taken over Where a business is transferred from one employer to another, this doesn’t automatically mean that you are redundant. Your employment contract will continue and you will keep the same terms and conditions of employment with your new employer. This is known as protection under the Transfer of Undertakings (Protection of Employment) Regulations, also referred to as ‘TUPE’. However, there are circumstances where you could get made redundant because of the transfer. This could either be by your old employer before the transfer takes place, or by your new employer after the transfer has happened. Your employer would have to show that: • you were genuinely made redundant, because there’s no longer any need for the work you were doing, and • the transfer itself was not the only, or main reason, for your redundancy.

School news

St Bartholomew’s Calling teachers, PTA members, pupils… Do you have exciting news at your school? Please send details to editor@simplyspalding.co.uk

Pupils from St Bartholomew’s CE Primary School have been selected to represent Lincolnshire in the final stage of a national cooking competition. Apple Class, children aged 4,5 and 6, is one of ten finalists selected to be in with a chance of being crowned the UK’s Young Pea Chef of the Year 2016, a national recipe competition which challenged children aged 4-12 to develop a delicious recipe using peas. The Yes Peas! campaign, which represents the UK’s pea vining sector, joined forces with Waitrose to launch the Young Pea Chef of the Year competition which received hundreds of entries from children across the UK. St Bartholomew’s recipe for Pea and Mint Cake beat off hundreds of hopefuls to be selected as one of the final ten by a panel of judges, including TV chef Rachel Green, Waitrose Frozen Foods Buying Manager, Michael Simpson-Jones, and representatives from Birds Eye and

To vote, all you need to do is visit the Yes Peas! Facebook page where you will find information on all the finalists and their pea-inspired recipes – www.facebook.com/YesPeas. To find out more, visit www.youngpeachef.co.uk

Pinguin Foods. The next stage of the competition calls upon the public to show their support and vote for their favourite recipe. The young chef with the most votes will be crowned Young Pea Chef of the Year 2016 and will win £500 worth of cooking equipment for their school from competition sponsor, Waitrose. Rachel Cannon, class teacher at St Bartholomew’s CE Primary School, said: “The children in Apple Class were so excited to take part in this competition. They wanted to create a Pea and Mint cake so they set themselves a challenge to make one. The children enjoyed cooking a delicious Pea and Mint cake at the same time as learning about the importance of peas.”

Tulip Pre-School Curious and enthusiastic, the children of the Tulip Pre-school, Spalding, have recently taken part in an array of exciting activities. Easter egg hunts, Easter rabbit crown craft and making chocolate nests are just a few of the engaging challenges that our children finished off the spring term with. These were then showcased and celebrated within a church service at St Mary and St Nicolas Church The spring term has been packed full of fun things; our favourite being a visit from the Play Bus. It gave the children the opportunity to climb, jump and roam freely around the converted double decker bus. This provided open challenges for all the children who showed perseverance and enthusiasm as they climbed the soft play equipment.

Our children have also taken part in many other adventures. Our celebrations for World Book Day included a visit to the town Library to listen to some exciting stories and a day dressed up as our favourite fictional character. Chinese New Year, saw a visit to the Crystal Inn which gave the children experiences of another culture and the chance to try Chinese food. Finally the children and staff took part in raising money for Sport Relief, where they had great fun completing a Danceathon and performing to parents and guests.

Our thanks for the generous donations.

Ayscoughfee School Children at Ayscoughfee Hall School have been enjoying a wide range of extra curricular visits and activities in recent weeks. The Choir and School Band entertained many parents and staff at their Spring Concert and solo, duet and ensemble groups performed on drums, piano, violin, guitar, trumpet, saxophone and flute. Kindergarten and Reception children enjoyed a delightful afternoon at Grove Farm where

12 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

they had the opportunity to see many new born lambs. Year 2 had a fantastic Saturday trip to London as part of their topic on The Great Fire of London. Together with their parents, they visited the Museum of London, St. Paul’s Cathedral, The Monument and Pudding Lane with some of the more hardy parents accompanying their children to the top of The Monument. Year 4 enjoyed a trip to Rockingham Castle whilst Year 6 had a highly educational trip to a Mosque in

Peterborough, with a visit to the Cathedral afterwards. The school continues to do well in sporting fixtures, with the mixed Under 11 netball team winning through to the Regional Finals. We look forward to an exciting summer term with plenty of cricket and rounders! The parents had their excitement courtesy of the fantastic Glitter Ball, with proceeds going to the newly refurbished library, to be opened early next term.

Adult Book Choice Our Endless Numbered Days

What’s On in May

by Claire Fuller

CHILDREN’S EVENTS Elmer Day 2016 To celebrate Elmer Day this year we will have a special storytime and craft on Tuesday 24th May at 2:00 pm in the children’s library.

1976: Peggy Hillcoat is eight. She spends her summer camping with her father, playing her beloved record of The Railway Children and listening to her mother’s grand piano, but her pretty life is about to change. Her survivalist father, who has been stockpiling provisions for the end which is surely coming soon, takes her from London to a cabin in a remote European forest. There he tells Peggy the rest of the world has disappeared. Her life is reduced to a piano which makes music but no sound, a forest where all that grows is a means of survival, and a tiny wooden hut that is everything.

HALF TERM WEEK We will have a craft table out for the half term week with lots of colourings, activity sheets and crafts to make for free. Come and create something in your library!

Children’s Book Choice Quick Quack Quentin by Kes Gray

From the award-winning author of Oi, Frog! Quentin was a duck with a very quick quack. ‘QUCK!’ said Quentin. ‘What’s wrong with me?’ Quentin’s quack has lost it’s A. Do any of the other animals have one to spare? Brilliant for reading out loud and teaching children about vowels and animals.

FOR MORE INFORMATION about any of our events please come in and ask a member of staff or call 01522 782010 and ask for Spalding library.

❖ Spalding Library opening hours: Monday 9am – 5pm, Tuesday 9am – 5pm, Wednesday 9am – 5pm, Thursday 9am – 6pm, Friday 9am – 5pm, Saturday 9am – 1pm ❖ Pinchbeck Library opening hours: Tuesday 10am - 1pm, Wednesday 10am - 1pm, 2pm - 4pm Thursday 10am - 1pm

Market Basket Challenge

M

arkets offer fresh, seasonal, local ingredients – often at prices that compete favourably with the Big Four. When you buy from a market stall, you are also keeping your money local, putting more pounds into your economy, as well as supporting small businesses, farmers and growers. May is markets month with the annual Love Your Local Market celebrations happening in markets across the UK and we would love it if you could fill your shopping baskets with produce from our local market to take part in the national Market Basket Challenge.

What’s

in season?

Rules of Engagement May 1st to 31st – you have one month to fill your market basket and make a meal from the ingredients, which you will post on Instagram and post along with the name of the market or markets you bought the produce from, along with and the ingredients and method you used to create the dish. All entries will be judged on originality, seasonality, sustainability, ingredients and photography. The winning picture will be decided on May 31st, the close of Love Your Local Market fortnight.

Asparagus New potatoes Chicory Radishes Crab Rocket Elderflowers

Sardines Gooseberries Spring onions Lamb Watercress Nectarines

The Challenge The more seasonal produce you buy, the higher you score but don’t forget you can get so much more from a market than simply fruit and veg. What we really want to see, is what you do with your market basket at home and this can include produce from a plethora of artisans across the country producing everything from charcuterie and cheeses to rearing eggs and British wines. Working with Love British Food, the organisers of British Food Fortnight, the local markets have put together a list of what is in season in May and we would love to see what you make from your market basket – simply post a picture of a dish you have prepared on Instagram with the list of ingredients, your method and the market you bought it from. To post just include #MarketBasketChallenge

IN ASSOCIATION WITH

Moving Home How to keep your pets happy

M

oving is a stressful time and it’s no different for our pets. They are generally territorial and often create strong environmental bonds. If you can’t place your pet in a cattery, kennels or with friends during the move, try these tips.

Dogs Outdoors ❖ Dogs should be kept on the lead until you’re sure the area is safe. Check the garden over thoroughly and put a warning on the gate. Even the most placid dog may nip if it feels threatened in a new environment.

Travelling ❖ Ensure your pet is in a safe, secure carrier with no room for escape. Try spraying some synthetic pheromone on bedding such as Feliway for cats to help keep them calm. ❖ Ensure the vehicle is cool and not noisy - turn the radio down and the air conditioning up.

Indoors ❖ On arrival keep your dog or cat confined to a single room with some familiar furniture. Put food and water down plus bedding from their previous set up. Pets like rabbits, hamsters and birds should be kept in their original cage or hutch for familiarity.

❖ Keep strangers away as all animals are unpredictable when afraid. ❖ Cats and dogs should have gradual access to the rest of house, but ensure all windows, doors and escape routes are closed. ❖ Keep feeding and walking routines at similar times to build up their confidence. ❖ If you are doing any DIY such as painting make sure you have fume-free varieties and don’t paint a room that your pet is shut in.

Outdoors ❖ Keep an eye on where the sun falls and where cold drafts are in the new garden and make your pet comfortable

Cats Outdoors ❖ Cats should be kept indoors for at least two weeks. Ensure you have lots of cat litter - you’ll need one litter tray per cat. ❖ When you let your cat out for the first time make sure they haven’t just eaten and they are wearing a tagged quick release collar if the microchip isn’t up-to-date yet. Don’t panic if Tiddles jumps straight over the fence. Give them time, call for them and shake those treats. An empty stomach often wins over the urge to explore.

Finance

Student loans

MARTIN LEWIS

There’s been a furore in Parliament about the scrapping of student grants

E

very time politicians get lairy over such issues, the news focuses on the scrap and the real truth of what’s actually happening gets lost. I’ve been swamped with panicked questions about student grants from students, future students, graduates and their parents, so I want to mythbust what’s really happening. In many ways, financially it’s a no win no fee education. An easy way to think of it is a bit like an extra income tax, with the one difference that once you have repaid what you borrowed (plus interest) it stops. For far more help on this, see my full 20 student loan mythbusters guide at www.mse.me/studentloan.

Q

A

SO WHAT’S HAPPENING TO STUDENT GRANTS?

Until now, students from lower income families (roughly below £43,000 income) had some of their loan replaced by a non-repayable grant for up to £3,400. From September 2016 grants are being scrapped in England and Wales. Yet there’s much confusion about this. There are two big things to note: 1) This only applies for new starters starting from 2016. Those already at university and getting grants will keep getting them. 2) This doesn’t mean they’ll have less money coming in. New 2016 starters will get a bigger loan to replace what they would’ve got in grants. In fact, the loan figures for new starters (not continuing students) have been upped by a chunk.

This is useful, as often the big issue that hits students isn’t the size of the loan, it’s that they don’t have enough money to live on day-to-day.

Q

ISN’T THIS LIKELY TO REALLY HIT POOR STUDENTS HARD?

A

You may be surprised that I’m going to say no. In many ways the big problem is the confusion and psychological deterrent, not the practical finances. For most students it makes no practical difference. The replacement of a grant with a loan will ONLY cost more for those who leave university and have long-term very high earnings. That’s because if you compare the current and new system, the fact it’s a loan and not a grant would only cost you more if you would’ve repaid your entire tuition fees, remaining maintenance loan after the grant, and interest in the 30 years before the debt wipes anyway. Most students won’t, so there’s no cost to them. In fact, my calculations estimate only those on STARTING salaries of £35,000 and up, and then above inflation pay rises would actually pay more. However, the big question is ‘will the system remain unchanged?’

Q

WHAT’S THIS RETROSPECTIVE HIKE TO STUDENT REPAYMENTS?

A

As I explained earlier, since 2012, graduates only repay 9% of what they earn over £21,000. The government had

Student finance: the basics When you go to university, if you’re a first time UK undergraduate you don’t need to pay upfront. The Student Loans Company pays your tuition fees for you and gives you money for living, then you owe it. ❖ You only start repaying when you leave university and, even then, only if you earn over £21,000. If you don’t earn over that you don’t repay. ❖ The amount you repay is proportionate to earnings. You repay 9% of everything above £21,000 (eg, earn £31,000 and, as it’s £10,000 above the threshold, you repay £900 a year). ❖ If you haven’t cleared what you owe within 30 years, the debt is wiped. ❖ If you never earn over £21,000, you never repay.

By Martin Lewis @moneysavingex pert said this threshold was due to rise each year from April 2017 in line with average earnings. Yet the Government has now decided to freeze it for at least five years, meaning many low- and middle-earning graduates will pay thousands more back than they thought they would when they signed up. After all, if we go back to thinking of it like a tax, if you were to pay 9% of everything earned above £22,000, but now repay everything above £21,000, that’s a hike. It’s received little publicity though, as it doesn’t immediately seem such a big problem. Here I need to declare an interest: I was head of the Independent Taskforce on Student Finance Information in 2012 when the system changed. The Government repeatedly told me the threshold would rise, and I, of course, told people, and used it in all my cost calculations. Well I refuse to missell these loans in hindsight. So I am actively campaigning on it – I’ve written an open letter to the Prime Minister and have personally hired lawyers to see if it can be challenged (read it at www.mse.me/studentloanhike). The big problem, even more important than the additional cost, is the message this sends. The Government is not just freezing it going forward, it’s freezing it for everyone who signed up since 2012 - effectively changing the contract after people have signed up. The regulator would not allow any commercial lender to change its terms this way. This could destroy any trust current and future generations can have in the student finance system, and perhaps, even more widely, in the political system as a whole. I said above that the impact of replacing grants with loans isn’t actually as bad as many think under the current terms. Yet the real concern is, as the Government has shown it’s willing to change loan terms even after you’ve got them, who knows what may happen in the future. www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 23

Family life

We need to get our children outside! A recent global study has revealed children around the world spend less time outdoors than prisoners! One in two children spend an hour or less outside per day, in contrast to prisoners who are guaranteed two hours in the open air every day, a global study has revealed. A survey of 12,000 parents with children aged from five to 12 years old, in 10 countries, found almost a third of children play outside for just 30 minutes or less a day. This research formed the basis of laundry brands’ OMO and Persil’s latest campaign - Free the Kids - Dirt is Good.

Family Life

When a prisoner from a maximum security facility in America was told how little time children spend outside on average around the world, he replied: “Wow, that is depressing. That really is.”

Children’s Party Etiquette Any parent knows that children’s parties can be stressful. From who to invite to chasing RSVPs! You’re not alone – visit any of the major parenting forums and you’ll find plenty of posts detailing the same concerns. Here are some of the most common concerns on the Netmums forum, and some of the great advice users provided. Am I being mean to only invite half the class to the party? This is a common concern – how do you decide who to invite from your child’s class? Only invite a select few and you run the risk that someone’s feelings will be hurt, invite everyone and your budget can spiral out of control. The consensus seems to be that only inviting half the class is fine, as long

as you make sure you aren’t just leaving out a couple of children. It’s fairly common for parents not to invite the whole class, especially if their child isn’t close to all of its members. Why people don’t RSVP? Is there anything more annoying than people who don’t RSVP? Unfortunately, not knowing who’s going to turn up seems to be a common problem This can be particularly problematic when ordering party bags or food. A good tactic is to include a politely worded caution in the invitation. Something along the lines of ‘food and party bags will be ordered on XXX, so could you please RSVP by

26 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk

then to let me know either way’. Would you be happy with these as party bags? Handing out party bags has become a staple of children’s parties, but knowing what to put in them is causing some parents a headache. Whilst you don’t want to look like you’ve gone completely over the top (largely due to the impact on your budget!), You don’t want to look like you’ve been too stingy either. The general consensus is that just a couple of quality items is more than enough, with many parents including a mixture of sweets and small toys, with one or two different items for boys and girls.

It’s fairly common for parents not to invite the whole class, especially if their child isn’t close to all of its members.

Motoring Sharpen up...

The Stuttgart’s firm’s ‘Sport’ setting just up s the ante a bit, providin g a heavier steering reac tion and a mor e ‘on-rails’ like experience through corn ers.

Mercedes -Benz GLE 350d Coupe 4Matic AMG Line FAST FACTS Max speed: 140 mph 0-62 mph: 7.0 secs Combined mpg: 39.2 Engine layout: 2987cc V6 turbo diesel ➠ Max. power (bhp): 255 ➠ CO2: 187 g/km ➠ ➠ ➠ ➠

If you love pomp and ceremony, you will adore this broad-shouldered offering from Mercedes-Benz

T

he GLE 350d Coupe 4Matic AMG Line, on test here, doesn’t know the meaning of ‘subtle’. It doesn’t need to. After all, why buy a machine of this magnitude if you don’t want people to notice you? The car’s looks will divide opinion. It’s a bit like looking at a certain well-known, generous-nosed, French actor. Some women swoon, other’s scowl at the sight of him. But, whether you think the GLE is handsome or hideous, it is definitely mesmerising. So, what exactly is the GLE Coupe all about? Well, it’s Mercedes-Benz’s answer to super-SUVs, such as the Porsche Cayenne, Range Rover Sport and BMW X6. The goliath houses either a 3.0 litre V6 diesel, churning out 255bhp or a far less sensible V6 petrol, producing 362bhp. Both engines come hooked up to a slickshifting nine-speed automatic ‘box. Behind the wheel, the diesel model has more than enough pull for British roads and, in AMG Line trim, you can either waft or thunder along encased in splendid surroundings. Kit includes: heated front seats, climate control, a DAB radio tuner, auto dimming and folding mirrors, parking sensors and a reversing camera. On the move, body roll is not really noticeable – which, considering the heft of the GLE, is a feat of engineering and design in itself. The permanent four-wheel

“The air-suspension hides the fact that you’re riding around on 21 inch alloys by soaking up even the evillest of potholes.” drive set-up provides tons of traction, too, so the mighty Merc is safe, as well as talented at delivering driving enjoyment. You can sharpen up the steering and throttle response, and you can even adjust the air suspension at the touch of button. But, if you don’t want your passengers throwing up, the Merc is best left in its standard ‘Comfort’ mode. Here, the SUV is in its ‘natural’ state, allowing you to control its power in a more measured way, while the well-weighted steering guides the car through twisty tarmac effortlessly, rather than crazily. The air-suspension hides the fact that you’re riding around on 21 inch alloys by

Price: £60,680 soaking up even the evillest of potholes. There is only one price to pay for the awesomely outsized wheels – and that’s a bit of extra noise. This is only really noticeable at motorway speed, but combined with 70mph wind-blast around the wing mirrors, the calm of the otherwise hushed cabin can become threatened at times. The GLE Coupe will take five-up, no problem - and even though it’s a coupe, rear passenger head and leg-space is ample. Only six-footers, upwards, will be vaguely bothered by the low-slung roofline. Room in the boot is very good, too, with plenty of space for a pushchair and the weekly shop. Only the high load lip rains on the parade, making the lifting of heavy items into the cargo area more of a chore than it should be. When all is said and done, the Mercedes-Benz GLE 350d Coupe 4Matic AMG Line is a well-appointed, fine-driving vehicle. The engine and automatic gearbox are nothing short of perfect; the steering response and handling are bang on the money – and even the sophisticated switchgear takes some beating.
