Welcome to the October issue Wow, how can summer be over and I am thinking of dragging my boots out from the depths of my wardrobe? It only seems like a few weeks ago we were basking in hot summer days with the holidays before us and here we are teetering into Autumn and Winter. September has been a great month, we have enjoyed a family holiday in Cornwall and celebrated our wedding anniversary while we were there. We have had a family wedding, which is a great time to catch up with relatives I don’t see too often as well as an opportunity to get glammed up for the day! And on top of this I have my birthday to look forward to in a few weeks, I just don’t relish the thought of being another year older, my thirties are flying by! Talking of weddings in this issue we are helping you plan for the big day and entertain your guests, so if you are getting married this year make sure you check out our wedding special from page 27. In Health & Beauty this month we are looking at complimentary therapies and how they can help treat every day aliments. It may seem a long way off but Christmas is just around the corner and for those of you tasked with organising a works Christmas party it is no mean feat, hopefully we can help you with our guide on page 30 to ensure there aren’t any hiccups along the way. Once again Martin Lewis offers his invaluable advice and this month he is talking about the links between mental health problems and debt. As always we are looking for charities, community groups and events to feature in our local focus, so if you are involved in anything happening locally please get in touch to discuss further. All that’s left for me to say is to have a great month and enjoy the last of the light nights before we change the clocks back on October 30!

Local App for Local Businesses and Events A new mobile app is being launched to promote businesses and events across the towns of South Holland. ‘Towns of South Holland App’ has been by produced by South Holland District Council to promote retail sectors in the district and give residents and visitors a quick and easy way to get the goods, services and information they require. The free app can be downloaded from the Google Play store or the Apple App store. Spalding, Holbeach, Crowland, Long Sutton, Sutton Bridge and Donington towns are featured, each with their own dedicated section within the app. Each section covers what’s on, what to do, where to eat, where to shop, where to stay, services and an A-Z search. There is also a general section which lists local news and weather and will give businesses the opportunity to promote their special offers. Cllr Nick Worth, South Holland District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Business Growth, said: “Using a phone app is now second nature for many people and we wanted to create an App that would specifically help businesses, residents and visitors to South Holland. “There are many different apps out there, but this is unique because it covers local
communities and allows users to get the information they need quickly. “We are committed to helping the South Holland economy to grow and develop and are confident that Town App will play a successful role in this.” For information about the app and how to use it visit www.townapp.co.uk.

Macular Society Optometrist of the year 2013 & 2015 Nominated
Andy Molsom of Molsom and Associates, has been nominated for the ‘Optometrist of the year’ award as part of the Macular Society’s Awards for Excellence. The nomination recognises his exceptionally good practice in the care of people with macular degeneration. Andy Molsom, who was also nominated for the awards in 2013, said: “I am very proud to have been nominated again for this award. It’s a great honour that a patient has thought my care is worthy for this Award of Excellence”. Cathy Yelf, Chief Executive of the Macular Society, said: “It is clear from his nomination that Mr Molsom works hard to improve the lives of people affected by macular degeneration, with excellence in advice and information. We are extremely grateful for his efforts in Spalding.” Age-related macular degeneration affects the central vision and is the most common cause of sight loss in the UK. More people are affected as our population ages. Kathleen Anna Pell, who nominated Mr Molsom for the award, said: “By making sure I had regular examinations on my eyes Mr Molsom quickly noticed the change in my right eye that dry macular had changed to wet macular and arranged treatment without delay. “Mr Molsom is well known in this area as a competent and caring optometrist and I recommend him for this award.” “By investing in the very latest technology, we are able to deliver an exceptional service for our patients. The latest 3D OCT retinal digital scanner helps us to find those patients who are at risk of sight problems, especially wet AMD, at such an early stage that treatment can make a real difference to retaining good eyesight and with it independence for our patients.” commented Andy Molsom The Macular Society is the national charity for anyone affected by central vision loss. We provide free information and support to improve lives today and we fund research so that one day we can overcome macular disease.

Think Before you Dispose of Your Waste A man has been hit in the pocket after his unwanted household items were found dumped beside a country lane. Kevin Cosgrove employed a man with a van to take away several items including a fridge and mattresses which were later dumped by the side of Low Road in Crowland. The items were spotted by South Holland District Council’s Environmental Investigations Officer, who was able to trace them to Cosgrove’s address in Whittlesey. Although he did not dump the items himself, Cosgrove failed to get any details of the man he hired to take the items or ensure that he had a waste carriers licence. Cosgrove appeared at Peterborough Magistrates’ Court recently and pleaded guilty to failing in his duty of care. He was given a 12 month conditional discharge, ordered to pay costs of £150, compensation of £150 and a victim surcharge of £15.
“When there is clear evidence of this illegal activity we will look to take action.”
South Holland District Council would like to remind residents that they have a duty of care to ensure that waste is disposed of correctly. Failure to comply can result in a fine or even imprisonment. Cllr Roger Gambba-Jones, South Holland District Council’s Portfolio Holder for Environmental Services, said: “Fly tipping blights the area for everyone making the place unsightly, potentially hazardous and often attracting even more such dumping. “When there is clear evidence of this illegal activity we will look to take action. “We are pleased with this verdict and hope it makes people aware that they have a legal obligation to ensure their waste is not passed on to unauthorised persons. “If you intend to use anyone other than the council to remove your waste, you must make sure they have a waste carrier license.” If you are thinking of hiring a private waste collector… • Ask the waste carrier to provide you with their full address and telephone number • Ask to see their waste carrier license issued by the Environment Agency • Contact the Environment Agency directly on 08708 506 506 and ask for a free instant Waste Carrier Validation Check, alternatively you can check online on the Environment Agency website: https://

The pods are situated in the reception area of the offices in Priory Road, Spalding, and allow users to access the council’s website www.sholland.gov.uk. Through the website, residents can complete services including paying council tax and reporting a range of community issues. The pods have access for disabled people and can be used at any time during office opening hours. Cllr Malcolm Chandler, Portfolio Holder for Transformation, said: “We are confident that the new pods will help residents get services completed in a quick and straight forward manner, reducing the amount of time spent at the council office. “As part of our ongoing Transformation Programme we are committed to providing digital services that are so good people choose to use them.” Staff at the council’s reception are on hand to help residents use the pods and offer any assitance.

Advice
Claim compensation for a holiday If something went wrong with your holiday you might be able to get compensation from the company you booked with. If you went on a package holiday You’re legally entitled to compensation if: ❖ the holiday you went on was lower in value than the one you booked, eg you paid for a deluxe room but only got a standard room this is called ‘loss of value’ and you can claim back the difference in value ❖ you had to spend extra money because of a problem with the holiday, eg you had to pay for another hotel because there were fewer beds than you booked - this is called claiming for ‘out-of-pocket expenses’ ❖ something goes wrong that causes you distress or disappointment, eg if the pool was closed for the whole trip - this is called ‘loss of enjoyment’ There’s no strict guidance on how much you can claim for loss of enjoyment. You’ll need to think of an amount that reflects the portion of the holiday that was affected. You’ll only be able to get the full cost of the holiday back if it was completely ruined - this rarely happens. You can’t get compensation if: ❖ you simply didn’t enjoy the holiday, even though it matched what you booked
❖ the problem was out of the holiday company’s control, such as bad weather ❖ you’ve already been compensated such as the hotel paying you compensation you while you were staying there If your flight was cancelled Your package holiday organiser should arrange an alternative flight or give you a refund if the flight you were booked on is delayed or cancelled. Check the information you received when you made the booking to see what you’re supposed to get. If you don’t get the service you’ve been promised, you may be entitled to compensation for breach of contract. If the airline you were flying with goes bust If you book a holiday that’s covered by the Air Travel Organisers’ Licensing (ATOL) scheme and the airline you’re supposed to fly with goes out of business, you’ll get: ❖ a refund if you haven’t travelled yet ❖ to finish your holiday and a flight home without paying extra, if the airline goes bust during your holiday You can read the information on how to claim on the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) website. If you organised the holiday yourself It’s harder to get compensation if you
IF YOU’RE STILL UNHAPPY If you booked a package holiday you might be able to complain to the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA). 1. Check if the company you booked with is a member of ABTA. You won’t be
able to complain to ABTA if they’re not a member. 2. Register a complaint on the ABTA website. 3. The company should get back to you.

organised the holiday yourself, because it’s likely that you’ll have different contracts with different companies - for example, hotels, airlines and travel agents. If those companies were based abroad, you won’t be protected by UK law and your rights could be completely different. However this doesn’t mean you can’t try. Most companies will have a complaints procedure that you can go through, so you might get some compensation. Write to the company and ask for compensation Write directly to the company, accommodation or service provider concerned Make sure you include: ❖ your booking reference ❖ clear details of what went wrong ❖ copies any evidence you have such as photos ❖ copies of receipts ❖ how much compensation you want It’s a good idea to send the letter by registered post, so you have proof that the holiday company received it. If the company makes you an offer that you think is too low, you can ask for more. They might come back to you with a higher offer.
If this doesn’t work you can get ABTA to mediate between you and the company. This means that ABTA will work with both you and the company to reach an agreement. There’s a fee for this service. Alternatively, you could choose a Trading
Standards-approved ADR scheme yourself to try and solve the problem more informally. As a last resort you can take the company to the small claims court. However, this can be expensive and take a long time.

School news
Spalding Parish C of E day school Calling teachers, PTA members, pupils… Do you have exciting news at your school? Please send details to editor@simplyspalding.co.uk
For the first year ever, Spalding Parish C of E Day School were invited to the Lincolnshire Media Education Awards in Lincoln as Emily, in Year 3, was shortlisted for the Primary Writing Award from a great number of entries. Emily was nominated because her writing ability is outstanding and it is always a pleasure to read and share her written work. She is only in Y3 but her writing could easily be mistaken for a child in Year 6 or even secondary school. Emily should be very proud of the written work she produces. Whatever the brief, she puts in 110% effort. Her style of writing is thoughtful, creative and showcases a range of language features. She uses vocabulary maturely and cleverly. It was an amazing evening celebrating the achievements of children and adults across Lincolnshire. Emily was awarded runner-up within the category for her outstanding writing.
Warm welcome to Wisbech Grammar school new joiners New starters to the Prep, Senior and Sixth Form at Wisbech Grammar School arrived in the sunshine to a warm welcome from excited pupils and staff returning earlier in the month. The 2016/17 Academic year brings exciting developments at the School. The Prep and Senior School timetables have been transformed and the School Day extended allowing greater flexibility for the whole School community and a greater variety of extra-curricular activities for pupils to choose from. The School also welcomed its first group of Academic and All-Rounder Scholars and
Exhibitioners selected following the launch of the programme last year. Headmaster, Chris Staley, said, “I was delighted to see so much excitement and positivity on our return to School this week. It is an incredibly exciting time at Wisbech Grammar School with developments to the School Day, the inaugural Scholars and Exhibitioners taking up their important roles within the School and the launch of new Performing Arts, Music and Sports programmes. We encourage pupils throughout the School to be involved in all areas of the curriculum and they are all positively encouraged to discover and follow their passions. These developments further enhance the all-round education offered across the School and create a solid foundation for our pupils’ success at School, University and beyond”.

Weston Hills Cof E school We have had a very busy start to the new school year, with 21 new children starting with us. 20 of these were in our Reception class, and they have all settled very well. Parent meetings were held for all year groups within the first two weeks of the start of term. 11+ tests have taken place within school for all Year 6 pupils hoping for a selective place at secondary school. Good luck! Class 4 have had a trip to the National Space Centre in Leicester – this linked in with class topics for this term. Year 5&6 children will be going on the annual residential trip to Aylmerton Field Study Centre in October. Tempest will be coming into school photographs this term, including mums and toddlers at the end of the school day. Rev. Brown will be coming in to take our Harvest Festival on 19th October at 2.30 p.m. in the school hall. Parents welcome. We will be holding a non-uniform “Stand up to Cancer Day” on Friday 21st October. The PTA have organised school discos for Wednesday 13th October, and will be organising more events throughout the year. Our extra curricular activities this term include Hockey, Football, Choir, Jigsaw, Cross Country, Construction & Outdoor Learning, Multi Skills & Homework.

Library news Adult Book Choice The Lie by C.L Taylor
Jane Hughes is happier than she’s ever been. Jane Hughes has a job she loves, a man she adores and a lovely cottage in Wales. But Jane Hughes does not exist. Five years earlier, Jane and her best friends went on what should have been a trip of a lifetime, but rapidly descended into a nightmare that claimed the lives of 2 women. Someone knows the truth about what happened, and they won’t stop until they’ve destroyed Jane. A brilliantly tense psychological thriller packed with twists and turns about friendship, betrayal and murder!
News about Lincolnshire Library Loans: From the 1st October 2016 the standard loan period for books and talking books borrowed from Lincolnshire Libraries will be changing from four weeks to three. Changing to a three week loan period will enable a greater turnover in stock giving customers a wider selection, of new and popular titles in particular, as well as reducing reservation waiting times for “out of library items”. Not all loan periods will change though. Items borrowed from Mobile Libraries will retain the four week loan in line with scheduled stops. DVD hire and loans to subscription groups, Listening Lincs and Home Library Service customers will also remain unchanged. To ensure customers have time to adjust to the change in loan periods, an eight week fines amnesty will be held from 1st October to 26th November 2016. This will cover the first two new loan periods and mean that customers won’t be penalised for forgetting about the new arrangements. Please ask a member of library staff for more information if you have any questions.

Celebrating
7 Years of Success
F
itzgerald’s Bed Centre opened it’s doors 23 years ago in Bourne and is now celebrating 7 years of trading here, in Spalding. The family business also has stores in Stamford and Peterborough. Back in 2009 in the midst of the recession local businessman Paul Fitzgerald bucked the trend of filling the space of an empty retail outlet. The bed store in Westlode Street has welcomed hundreds of new customers through the doors since opening on September 25th 2009.
The First Fitzgerald’s Bed Store It was 23 years ago that Paul opened the first Fitzgerald’s Bed Store in Bourne which has always been based on Abbey Road. Ten years ago he also opened in Stamford on West Street and 5 years ago he opened his fourth store at Cygnet Park, Hampton, Peterborough. All four stores offer a wide choice of beds at very competitive prices and Paul prides himself on the company’s excellent customer service and will often go that extra mile for his customers. Fitzgeralds is under the management of Ian Yarnell who has been with the company for 7 years of offers all customers a wealth of knowledge. Both Paul and Ian are passionate about good old fashioned customer service.
“We are often asked many questions relating to the best mattress for health conditions and it isn’t a simple one size fits all, it’s often a case of trying three or four for 5 or 10 minutes to see which has the right feel and comfort for each individual” Great Service, Fantastic Prices It’s not just beds Fitzgerald’s sell, they have memory foam style mattresses, pillows, futons and a selection of bedroom furniture also available. Paul says, K C I U “Fitzgerald’s prides itself on great Q Y R E V I L E service, fantastic prices and we have D dard ivery is stan el D l ca Lo many repeat customers in all our stores ed Free n be arrang and can ofte ys if the bed or Stamford which speaks volumes. There’s no rush, we allow customers to take their time and to try as many beds as they like before making their final choice.”

Spooktacular Fun Have an ‘incy-wincy’ bit of fun this Halloween
I
t’s October, a time of ghoulish costumes, grinning pumpkins, creepy crawlies and things that go bump in the night! Whether you love or hate trick or treating, (personally I can’t abide it and delight in taking homemade cookies to all our neighbours to spread cheer instead), spiders and witches are likely to feature somewhere in the celebrations. Which brings me to my 10-year-old son’s brain teaser – ‘Would you rather bathe in eels or shower in spiders?’ – Hobson’s choice if ever there was one, although if pushed it would have to be eels! Spiders and creepy crawlies have a special role in scaring the life out of many of us. There’s something about their speed and unpredictability, not to mention the fangs poised for action. Or perhaps it’s just too easy to imagine them scaled up like some scary sci fi creature? For a young baby, watching a daddy long legs walking precariously on its delicate limbs is a thing of wonder to marvel at. Intrigued by its bobbing movement but already conscious of not wanting it to come too close, of course adult’s reactions to spiders help shape children’s future fears. Anyone familiar with nursery rhymes and fairytales will know that suspense, excitement and a surprising amount of horror are essentials for captivating and thrilling

children. With most fairytales exploring the polarities of good and evil, beauty and the beast, spiders, dragons, witches and creepy crawlies add to the interest of peek a boo and hide and seek as Incy Wincy disappears and reappears to a squeal of delight. Scary as they are, Bruno Bettleheim understood the importance of children being exposed to contained ‘islands’ of scariness, preparing children as they do for life’s ups and downs and helping them face their fears. With a bit of inventiveness, Halloween can help capture children’s interest and get them involved in exploration, reading, writing, maths and crafts. Unlock
children’s imagination with story-telling, from ‘Aaaarrgghh, Spider’ to ‘Harry Potter’, with a range of voices and some well-chosen props, prepare to watch children delight in their magical spookiness. Or make counting fun by weighing and mixing up potions or wizard’s favourite fairground game - catching rubbery spiders and snakes hiding in yukky tubs. October is the perfect time to fuel children’s imagination with some scary stories and these creepy crafts and ‘spooktacular’ activities.

hen you are unwell, you see your GP for advice and you may leave the surgery with a prescription. Your doctor - and the medication they prescribe - is considered part of conventional medicine. If you also visit a chiropractor or acupuncturist for treatment, you’d be in the field of complementary and alternative medicine, sometimes referred to as CAM.
There are a number of alternative and complementary therapies available in the UK. Some of these treatments have been claimed to help some people alleviate the symptoms of certain illnesses. However, other alternative therapies don’t have enough medical evidence to determine if they are effective. Complementary and alternative therapies should not be used to replace the treatment recommended by your doctor.
Many complementary and alternative therapists are registered with the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC) which was set up by the government to give a degree of regulation to the sector.
Acupuncture What it is: Traditional Chinese acupuncture is based on the theory that vital energy called Qi circulates around the body along channels called meridians. Blockages in the flow of Qi are thought to cause ill health. The aim of acupuncture is to restore a balance of energy and good health to the body. The evidence: Many of acupuncture’s benefits still haven’t been confirmed. That’s because more studies on acupuncture need to be performed. However, evidence suggests that acupuncture holds promise for relieving vomiting caused by cancer chemotherapy. Also, hospitals, hospices and clinics use acupuncture to help relieve pain.

Reflexology What it is: Reflexology is based on the belief that there are reflex areas in the feet and hands which correspond to all organs and parts of the body. Particular massage movements on these areas are thought to improve mood, aid sleep and relieve tension. The evidence: A study in 2008 failed to find any good-quality evidence that reflexology can effectively treat any health condition. The following year, a review of available research found that reflexology was an effective treatment for people with multiple sclerosis (MS) who had bladder problems. aromatherapy works. Various reviews of the effect of aromatherapy on conditions including pain management in labour, dementia and psychiatric disorders have usually concluded that more studies or better designed research is needed.

The evidence: Chiropractic medicine does seem to provide some relief for lower back pain, although it may not be any better than other back pain treatments, such as painkillers, exercise and physiotherapy. However, there is no good evidence that spinal manipulation is an effective treatment for any other health condition.
Hypnotherapy What it is: Hypnotherapy is a technique designed to direct a person’s imagination in a way that helps change their thoughts, feelings and behaviour. It can help as part of psychotherapy because the hypnotic state allows people to explore painful thoughts, feelings and memories that they might have hidden from their conscious minds. People may seek help
from a hypnotherapist to relieve anxiety, improve sleeping, stop smoking, address phobias or deal with issues over their weight. The evidence: Hypnotherapy is not ‘mind control’ or ‘brainwashing’ and is only effective if the subject is committed to relaxing and has an open mind receptive to the therapist. Although hypnosis is not considered a dangerous procedure, it does pose a risk of creating false memories - usually as a result of unintended suggestions by the therapist.

Go abroad and debit and credit card firms freeze your accounts if they detect unusual spending patterns. Why not allow people to voluntarily apply that to all spending? Then if unusual spending patterns happen, their card is cut off for a set time, say 10 weeks, unless a nominated trusted friend or mental health case worker agrees it should be unfrozen, because the high spend is, for example, just due to a house move. Of course there are many other conditions too, such as dementia, which require other solutions. (go to http://www.moneyandmentalhealth.org.uk /join-our-research-panel/) Yet that’s all in the future. SPEAK TO A NON-PROFIT DEBT HELP AGENCY. If you’re in debt crisis, then www.CitizensAdvice.org.uk, www.StepChange.org, www.NationalDebtline.org and especially www.CapUK.org can help – I say especially as it also does emotional counselling too. CAN YOU CUT THE INTEREST RATE? The lower it is the more of your repayments clear the actual debt. A balance transfer credit card can shift debt to 0% for 40 months. CONSIDER INFORMING YOUR BANK. Once a lender is aware that a customer has a mental health condition, it has to make adjustments. The Lending Code says banks should consider keeping a debt inhouse rather than passing it to debt collectors, and they should make court action the last resort. Though telling your bank is a decision to discuss carefully with a caseworker or debt counsellor. YOU CAN’T BE DISCRIMINATED AGAINST FOR YOUR MENTAL HEALTH. In other words, if the fact you’ve declared your illness to a bank affects your ability to get other products with them, such as a mortgage, it would likely breach the Equality Act. KNOW THE EARLY WARNING SIGNS. Even when people plunge into debt, issues like depression don’t bite overnight. Look out for tension headaches, arguments at work, back pain or bad skin. And seek help.

PRIORITISE HEATING AND EATING. Don’t simply pay those who hassle you the hardest. The debt counsellors above can help. BANKING CONTROL IF YOU HAVE BIPOLAR. A few banks have minor procedures to allow you to register your mental health issues and stop your overdraft going beyond a certain amount. Bipolar disorder sufferers, who may be prone to overspending during a manic episode, could consider discussing this with their bank. It’s worth chatting through with a debt counsellor or case worker first. CONSIDER ADDING A NOTE ON YOUR CREDIT FILE. If you overspend when you are unwell, you can volunteer to add information on mental health problems to your credit files in what’s called a ‘notice of correction’. This alerts potential lenders so they don’t lend further credit. This can be added or removed whenever you want though. Yet it may stop you borrowing when you are well. 8. CONSIDER PAYING BILLS BY DIRECT DEBIT. This can simplify your finances, helping to ensure bills get paid when you’re ill. Yet while direct debits for gas and electricity bills, home phone and broadband can save you money, home and car insurers charge you interest so annual payments better. THERE’S NO SUCH THING AS AN UNSOLVABLE DEBT. For as long as I’ve been doing my job, I’ve never once seen a debt case that isn’t solvable. It may not be easy, it may not be quick, but I want you to know it is ALWAYS doable. If you start to sort it out, it does get better.

Make your wedding day a day to remember
A
British wedding is always something special, so why not celebrate in style with wedding entertainment to keep your guests entertained all afternoon and right into the night too! Even if the sun doesn’t always shine, you can easily make your special day sparkle with delightful entertainment. Check out our ideas here: All the fun of the fair Give your wedding a retro setting with a village fête or country fair theme. Hire a traditional style marquee complete with peak top, be generous with the bunting and complete the look with fresh flowers. Remember the PA system for those important announcements about the forthcoming entertainment! Game on! Test your skill and judgment with traditional outdoor games such as outdoor skittles, giant snakes and ladders, jenga, and chess. Perfect for indoor fun too! Super side stalls Set up traditional side stalls with all those fun games you loved as a child, from coconut shies to ‘ring the bell’ strength tests, ball in the bucket, cork gun ranges, knock the cans, hoopla and a ‘bran tub’ lucky dip for the kids.
Abracadabra! Add a little magic to everyone’s afternoon with a table top magician, amazing your guests with clever card tricks, cunning coin illusions and maybe an odd dove or three! Isn’t that..? Yes, you can have David Beckham, Madonna or even the Queen at your wedding! Stop your guests in their tracks with celebrity looka-likes, who will mix and mingle. Something for the kids Let’s be honest, weddings can be boring for kids, with those big gaps between food and the dancing! Keep the little ones laughing and enjoying themselves with professional children’s entertainers such as balloon modellers, clowns, face painters, stilt walkers and even a mob of meerkats in a mobile petting zoo. Wicked! Outside, inside Just in case the British weather should prove a trifle inclement during the proceedings, choose artists and entertainment that works well inside and out, such as close-up magicians, caricaturists, celebrity look-a-likes, small format jazz bands, soloists and most children’s entertainers. Ready for your closeup Everyone loves a photo booth, so relive those teenage years - get in there, make faces and laugh at the results. The photos make great souvenirs of your wedding too. Sound stages for all ages Why have one band when you can have three! The secret here is to see what formats

your evening party wedding musicians offer. A function band might offer an acoustic set, a jazz band a reduced line-up, a funk band a duo of singer and sax. And don’t forget those church singers from the wedding ceremony, who probably can belt out a fab show tune or two on request. Voilà – perfect entertainment for your sound stages! Service with a song. Imagine the look of surprise on your guests’ faces as the waiter who’s been serving them all night suddenly decides he wants to sing, and then other waiters join in too!

Singing waiters really can bring the house down with terrific singing and lots of laughter. Sundown celebrations The sun is setting, your evening guests are arriving, and everyone is looking forward to a wonderful night of music, laughter and entertainment. So, let’s get the party started with guests walking into your venue past living statues, who can hand out welcome drinks. Or serve your welcome canapés from “living tables” decorated to match your theme, complete with a character performer standing in the middle to delight and amuse! Make some magic Your wedding breakfast is the perfect opportunity for those entertainers to come inside to delight your guests. Your magician can tour the tables before the food arrives, to fill that inevitable gap between taking your seats and tucking in, as can your caricaturist. Play it (again) Sam Create a lovely atmosphere with your cocktail pianist playing gently in the background during the meal – make sure to ask if he takes requests, the guests will
really enjoy having their favourite songs played! Star gazing When your guests have drunk, dined, danced and discussed to their fill, why not give them one last show – the night sky. Lay out some cushions and bean bags on the lawn, scatter a few laminated star maps, and let nature do the rest. And if it’s cloudy, get the DJ packing the dance floor, the cocktails flowing and your guests will be having a party of a lifetime. What more could you ask! Delightful sounds Give your drinks reception a touch of class with the gentle sounds of a string quartet, solo guitarist, harpist, or cocktail pianist. The low music levels will also ensure people can actually talk to each other too! Hold the front page! Turn your guests into instant celebrities with comedy paparazzi. Skilled photographers and entertainers in disguise, these relentless news hounds create comedy chaos as they
The Flowers The right mix of style and simplicity has been the cornerstone of fabulous wedding floral arrangements in 2016. Just picked. Arrangements that feature both whatever is in season and whatever is local are gaining traction. Sometimes couples request a “wild” look but what they’re after are freshly picked flowers. These free-form bouquets and centerpieces often include a mix of big and small blooms in more than one color, and might use spiky flowers or fruiting vines to serve as exclamation points. Tone-on-tone explosion. A concentrated cluster of one color lends a graphic impact to centerpieces. Ask your florist to choose three to five different flowers in the same shade — the slight color variations create an ombré effect. For an uber-romantic feel, stick to the opposite ends of the color spectrum — either pale or deeply saturated. Or set the table up for fun by picking a hyper-vivid neon or a playful sorbet shade.

Petite seasonal fruits and vegetables are another way to layer on color. Flowers not necessary. Potted trees, succulents, ferns, lavender sprigs and decorative leaves (such as magnolia, begonia) are no longer reserved for anchoring flower arrangements — these days they can become the focal point of the décor. Flowering plants and blooming branches (think flowering quince, crab apple or cherry blossom) also work well as creative centerpieces. And a budget-friendly elegant idea is to adorn bare branches with crepe-paper flowers or sparkly jewels.

Christmas party planning
The recipe for a
great work Christmas party
‘T
is the season of Christmas parties! If you’ve been tasked with organising your festive works do this year, you’ll undoubtedly want to make sure it’s an evening to remember – for all the right reasons, of course. It’s no mean feat choosing a venue and a menu that will please everyone, but with some careful preparation and a healthy dose of creativity, it can be achieved. We believe the following ingredients make up the recipe for the ultimate Christmas party.
A pinch of organisation We know, we know – planning is sometimes considered the boring part, but it really is necessary if you want the festive get-together to go without a hitch. Book your venue well in advance, and make sure your plans are inclusive of everyone’s age, budget, dietary requirements and location. Employers often forget to put on transportation to and from the party – but whether it’s a taxi, minibus or coach, this is always a most welcome touch.
A sprinkle of originality While we’re all fond of tradition, there’s something to be said for breaking the mould and trying something new for your Christmas do, as opposed to a sit-down meal with turkey and all the trimmings. Don’t even think about putting up some tinsel and holding the party in the office! Getting the team out of the usual day-to-day environment can really bring people out of their shell, help colleagues mix and break down any hierarchies. Why not try something totally different like wine tasting, cocktail making or even zip lining?
A dollop of gratitude
A smidgen of a theme
A theme for your Christmas party will really help create a sense of unity – and it can be as silly or as sophisticated as you like. From themes such as ‘ballroom’ and ‘winter wonderland’ to ‘the naffest Christmas jumpers’, choose one and give your team plenty of notice to get their outfit sorted. There’s bound to be a load of photo opportunities – the results of which you can attach in the next company newsletter!
The Christmas party is an ideal time to show your appreciation for the hard graft your team has put in throughout the year. Recognise individuals as well as the workforce as a whole, and think of a few heartfelt and funny words to say. You could even include a mini prize-giving ceremony, including awards such as “Tidiest Desk” and “Most Punctual”!
“...show your appreciation for the hard graft your team has put in throughout the year. Recognise individuals as well as the workforce as a whole...”
A spoonful of fun and games The team that plays together, stays together! Games are a great way of getting colleagues to interact – just make sure they’re both fun and inclusive, and that they’re organised prior to the event, not during!

Funerals
Funerals Humanist Funerals The death of someone we know and love is often shocking and painful, even if it is expected. Humanist funerals and memorial services offer a personal and fitting way to say goodbye to those who have lived without religion. Many thousands are conducted by our celebrants each year. Humanist funerals bring people together to express sadness at the loss but also to celebrate the life lived. They focus sincerely and affectionately on the person who has died, paying tribute to the connections they made and left behind and the way they lived their life.
Practicalities Whilst a funeral director is the professional most likely to deal with the practical arrangements of a funeral, what type of ceremony you choose is entirely up to you. And since funerals themselves have no legal status, humanist funerals – like all others – can be held in a variety of places, although in practice most are held in crematoria, cemeteries or

woodland burial sites. “Whilst still sad, people thought it was a beautiful and uplifting funeral and many commented that is was the most personal funeral they’d ever been to.”
Working with a celebrant British Humanist Association funeral celebrants are sensitive people, empathetic to the experience of bereavement but focused on providing a funeral ceremony that will be most fitting for the circumstances. They are familiar with cremation and burial procedures and will guide you through the whole process of arranging a funeral ceremony. Funeral celebrants: • Meet with the family or friends most closely connected with the person who has died to learn more about that person and ensure that the funeral justly captures their life and personality • Advise on practical matters, such as options for the committal, for example, or the amount of time available for the ceremony at the crematorium

• Listen to your ideas on music or readings and provide their own suggestions if needed • Share their ideas and draw on their experience when appropriate • Liaise with those involved in the ceremony, for example, anyone who will be reading a tribute or a poem / piece of prose • Write a unique ceremony that’s absolutely fitting for the person who has died and the circumstances • Have a calm presence on the day, leading the ceremony with warmth and dignity • Give you a presentation copy of the final script. “You struck exactly the right tone and balance. Many people commented to me that they could not believe that you had never met her! People were also very interested to hear details of her life. For most it was the first time they had attended a humanist service of any description and I only received positive comments. They appreciated the honesty of the service and the fact that it was all about my mother with no other influences.”

Pulled Pork Sandwiches Ingredients
for 12 servings
1 medium onion (chopped) ½ cup of ketchup ¼ cup of packed brown sugar ¼ cup of tomato paste 2tbsp. Worcestershire sauce 1/3 cup of cider vinegar 2tbp. sweet paprika 1 ½ tsp. Salt 1 ¼ tsp. ground black pepper 4lb boneless pork shoulder 12 buns or ciabatta rolls
Equipment: Large slowcooker, large bowl, forks
Method: Mix together the onion, ketchup, brown sugar, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, paprika, mustard and then add the salt and the pepper. Once you have done this, pour the sauce mixture into the slow cooker pot and add the pork, making sure to also coat it in sauce. Pop the lid on top of the slow cooker and cook the pork. Do this on a low setting (one which the manufacturer recommends). Cook until the pork is tender for between 8-10 hours. When it is finally cooked, move the pork from the slow cooker into a large bowl. Change the temperature setting on the cooker to ‘high’, cover

the pot and then cook the sauce. Do this until boiling point is reached to make the mixture thicker. Pull the pork apart into shreds (you can use 2 forks for this). Then put the shredded pork back into the slow cooker, mixing it into the sauce. Cover once again and cook on high. Finally, once warmed through, spoon mixture into buns and serve.

Blueberry Muffins
INGREDIENTS 100g caster sugar 100g butter 2 large eggs 300g self-raising flower 1tsp baking powder 1tsp vanilla extract 140ml milk 150g blueberries
Mix together the butter and the sugar until the mixture is creamy and fluffy. Then add the eggs, making sure to add them one at a time. Once you have done this, add in the flour and baking powder. When the mixture has turned into a thick batter, add the vanilla extract and milk. After both the milk and vanilla are mixed in, spoon the blueberries into the mixture. Line a muffin tray with paper muffin cases and then spoon the mixture into the cases. Cake in the oven for 15-20 minutes (180c or Gas Mark 4).
36 | SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk
INGREDIENTS for 4 servings 6 large eggs 200g mature cheddar 200g bread 225ml bag baby leaf spinach 1tbsp English mustard powder 425ml milk
Equipment: Shallow 2-litre dish, colander, food processor Oven: Gas Mark 5, 190C
Method: Begin by buttering the dish and preheating the oven. For the spinach, you can either cook it in the microwave as per packet instructions or empty the spinach contents into a colander over the sink. After boiling the kettle, pour the boiling water over the spinach and leave to wilt. Then begin to make your cheese base by breaking up the eggs into a food processor bowl. Proceed to add the milk, the mustard and a tsp of salt. Break up all of the bread (including the crust) and whizz it all together until the mixture is smooth. Pour the mixture into a large bowl and grate 3 quarters of the cheese in. Once you have done this, to get rid of all the water, squeeze the spinach. Then put the spinach within the cheese mixture and stir in before pouring the finished mixture into the dish. Once this is done, grate over the rest of the cheese on top. Bake in the oven for 30-35 minutes until risen and golden. Allow to cool before serving.

Transform Your Home with a Change of Flooring
A
re you thinking about replacing flooring in your home? Consider the costs, benefits, and the downsides of each type of flooring before you commit. Here is a list of the most popular types of flooring, their pros and cons, and the rooms for which they are best suited.
hardwoods also need treating occasionally in high-traffic areas. Standing water can also ruin hardwoods. Best Rooms: The best place to put hardwoods is in a living room. It looks good and is stylish. It is not a high-traffic area such as a hallway so the wood can remain protected. You can also use a rug to muffle the noise a bit.
Hardwoods
Laminate
Costs: Depending on the type of hardwoods you go with can massively affect the total cost. Engineered wood will cost you a little less. On top of the cost of materials, you will need to pay to get it installed which will likely run you in the hundreds or thousands of pounds. Pros: Hardwoods look very nice and have a great resale value. They are easy to clean and maintain and usually only require vacuuming. Cons: The cost is the largest drawback. Like tile, hardwoods are also loud to walk on. Real
Costs: Again, this ranges in price, but if you are a handy DIYer laminate is something that you could self install. Pros: My favorite thing about laminate is that it does not easily scratch. And if it does, a little vegetable oil rubbed on the scratch will get it right out. It also can look like real wood or tile, and it can even be difficult to tell if it is real or not. Like hardwoods, laminate is easy to clean. It is also great for pets because they can’t scratch or stain it.
Cons: Standing water will ruin laminate flooring. I learned this the hard way after having a refrigerator leak, and I ended up having to replace all the flooring in my kitchen. If the laminate does get ruined, unlike read hardwoods, laminate can not be refinished. Best Rooms: Laminate is great for high traffic areas such as a hallway or any room with a lot of activity because of its durability. I highly recommend not putting it in a kitchen, bathroom, or a laundry room since laminate should not get wet.
Carpet
Costs: The cost of carpet varies greatly depending on the quality. You will also need to have an underlay, you can improve the feel of quality with a thicker underlay. 2 - Tile Pros: Carpet not only feels soft, but it also Costs: There are many different types of tile. Vinyl
Costs: Vinyl flooring is a great low cost flooring option Pros: Like carpet, vinyl is quiet and easy on your feet. It is inexpensive compared to some of the other flooring types. Cons: Although vinyl has come a long way and can be made to look like wood or tile, it still does not look as good as the real thing. Vinyl can dent and tear. Best Rooms: Vinyl is great for a kitchen or utility room as it can shield a lot of the sound from your washing machines. It could also work well in bathrooms because of the warmth it adds. www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING | 39

Gadgets To Smarten Up Your Home The smart home The internet is gradually making its way into everything from appliances to thermostats, and you’ll soon be able to control most things in your house from your phone. But letting WiFi connected things into your house is a big step — they can watch you at all times and know a great deal about your most intimate life. So it’s worth getting one you trust and believe in. Some of the smart home gadgets on the market can be a little complex and pointless. But a number of them blend into your normal life — making things easier and smarter, rather than getting in the way. How about these to ‘tech up’ your life?
Smart electricity switches are simple They can be hooked up to anything to make them internet-enabled. Plugging a lamp will mean you can turn it on and off over the internet, for instance, and you can hook it up to other services like your thermostat or your phone’s location so that they’ll go off and on when you arrive and leave. Efergy Energy Smart Socket allows you to control electrical appliances wherever you are via an app. You can switch lights on and off, turn on appliances plus monitor their useage. Put Your Feet Up and get the Vacuuming done! Prepare for the robot age by investing in a Roomba. It will drive itself around your home, hoovering up as it goes whatever the surface, and then drive itself back to charge before starting all over again.
iRobot Roomba 980 £799.99 It’s an investment but the Roomba 980 gives you cleaner floors, throughout your entire home, all at the push of a button. Roomba seamlessly navigates an entire level of your home, keeping track of its location and recharging as needed until the job is done! And with the iRobot HOME App, you can clean and schedule on the go.
Have Hot Water Ready and Waiting An internet-connected kettle perhaps isn’t an essential but it will mean that you’ve got boiling water ready for your tea before you arrive in the kitchen. It can be turned on from the app, and scheduled to warm up ready for when you wake up.

T
he UK Window group, responsible for manufacturing 10,000 + window, doors and conservatories each week, supplying some of the biggest household names in the industry, have struck a deal with local installers Fusion Home Improvements to be an outlet for their high quality products. The business model is to serve the trade and retail markets and to facilitate thisa new show centre and trade counter has been created in the Old Railway House in Sutterton on the main roundabout where the A16 meets the A17. Windows and doors are available in 5 days from order and at the site is a full stock of building plastics, underground drainage and rainwater goods which can be sold as they are or fully installed. “We needed more space to cope with the extra windows, doors and conservatories that will be passing through our firm, serving builders, independent window installers and the DIY market”. Owner Richard Fairbanks explains “this is all extra to the retail business that we have been and will continue to install to local customers. The move to Sutterton
“Fusion Home Improvements have always been competitive on price but the tie up with UK Window Group gives them access to unrivalled support and group bulk buying power..” sits us in between our old base in Pinchbeck and on the link road to our main target markets of Boston, Sleaford and King Lynn. We aim to serve as many people as possible hence the show centre, we have displays of windows, conservatories and composite doors so people can touch and feel the quality of the products. Both our windows and doors have unrivalled levels of security using Yale locks for added peace of mind for our customers.”.
Fusion Home Improvements have always been competitive on price but the tie up with UK Window Group gives them access to unrivalled support and group bulk buying power. “Pop in for a quote and a coffee, have a look at our products and see what you could save” for the opening month of October, just bring in a quote and it will be beaten, regardless of product. That applies to fully installed windows and doors, conservatories or building plastics.

“The current Kuga is smart enough and has a generally reliable history, although it is starting to come over as a tad dated – but at least it’s a safe car.”
T
he Kuga came on to the scene in 2008. Built in two-wheel-drive and four-wheel-drive it was Ford’s response to SUVs, such as the Nissan Qashqai. It was also built to challenge more established 4x4s, such as the Honda CR-V. While it is no rocket ship, the Kuga 1.5T Ecoboost, on test here, does pick up pace fairly well (0-62mph in 9.7s) and feels particularly nippy around town. Its manual six-speed gearbox has a positive, smooth, action and the Ford delivers a relaxing, yet well-ordered ride at low speeds. The steering is light and direct – and this makes city driving and parking a breeze. Alas, there is far too much din in the road and wind noise department for the Kuga to be a serious motorway vessel. Safety is first-rate, though, with side and curtain airbags helping it achieve a five-star Euro NCAP crash-test result. Inside, the Kuga is quite spacious in the front, but its plunging roofline intrudes
on headroom for taller passengers in the rear. Legroom for anyone approaching six-feet tall is also limited, however it’s a fine area for kids to sit comfortably. The 406-litre boot is bigger than the Ford Focus’ 316-litre offering – making the loading of a bulky pushchair and the weekly supermarket shopping even less of a hassle. As alluded to earlier, the Kuga’s key rival is the Nissan Qashqai, with other opponents including the Kia Sportage and Volkswagen Tiguan. All of their boots are even bigger than the Ford’s by some margin. In fairness, though, the Ford Kuga Zetec 1.5T EcoBoost makes a good buy. It offers a decent mix of performance and size for families looking for a school-run-mobile. It is also front-wheel-drive - and this variant is really what you should try and get, unless you are desperate for 4x4 traction and off-road ability. Front-wheel-drive Kugas are a little bit cheaper to run than the fourwheel-drive versions and, if buying used, may well have been better cared for. The current Kuga is smart enough and has a generally reliable history, although it is starting to come over as a tad dated – but at least it’s a safe car. Fortunately, we won’t have too long to wait for a fresh First Drive Review by Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Journalist Twitter: @carwriteups
