Welcome

to the August issue I feel a bit mean writing about education in the August issue – it is the summer holidays after all! Nevertheless I’ve done it anyway – it’s such a tough decision for any parent to make. Where is the best nursery or preschool for my child? Which primary? Secondary? College? University?! With every parent having different preferences and priorities, the sooner you start the better!! I’ve balanced it out by including another feature looking at fab days out to take advantage of over the next few weeks. Some days you feel like staying local and others venturing a little further afield so we’ve travelled a little wider this issue. We’re also running a feature about Pub Grub and what it is that we love the most about having a meal out at our local. At this time of year the beer garden seems to shout louder than ever and what could be more sociable than meeting up with your friends and family and spending a few hours in the pub enjoying something to eat and drink? And with more choice than ever on the menus there really is something for everyone. Enjoy the issue.

Store opening was a sight for sore eyes! A Boston opticians celebrated in style at the official launch of its new store on Saturday 13 June. Boston United’s assistant team manager Martyn Bunce joined Hayley-Jo Whitney, the star of the Specsavers ‘Workout’ TV commercial, to cut the ribbon at the re-located Specsavers store at 9 Wide Bargate. Hayley-Jo Whitney, who played the role of a shortsighted fitness teacher accidently performing at a bingo evening for the elderly, performed outside the store and encouraged shoppers to join in with her fun routine. There was also a caricaturist on hand who created customers’ portraits in return for donations to St Barnabas, Lincolnshire Hospice – the store’s nominated charity. As a thank you to the store’s first customers, store director, Joanne Curtis, presented them with a bottle of Champagne and a box of chocolates. Joanne says: ‘We had a fantastic day on Saturday and it was great to see shoppers joining in with Hayley-Jo and making donations to St Barnabas, Lincolnshire Hospice. We’ve been made to feel very welcome and look forward to meeting our new customers and getting settled in to our new home.’

#BostonHero – a new art project for Boston Borough The search is on for our unsung heroes – community-spirited people in Boston Borough who quietly go about their duties, paid or otherwise, so we can all enjoy a more pleasant place to live. The roles these people have and the instantly recognisable places they work in are going to be celebrated in twelve new artworks by artist Sarah Brown. Sarah has been commissioned by Transported, the Boston and South Holland arts programme, to design new artworks for six of Boston Borough Council’s refuse/recycling collection lorries, working in partnership with Boston Borough Council. Sarah wants to hear from local people, so that she can meet, understand and create drawings of the people who will inspire these new artworks. Nominating your heroes couldn’t be simpler. You can help Sarah to find her inspiration by simply sharing a photograph of your unsung hero with a brief description of their role, along with your own name and the hashtag #BostonHero on Twitter or Facebook. You can also fill in the nomination form in the paper, or pick up a form from the Boston Borough Council offices, the library or the CVS, and send it in to the Transported office at the following address: Transported, Holbeach St Marks Community Association Building, Sluice Road, Holbeach St Marks, Lincolnshire PE12 8HF. The deadline for nominations is Friday 24 July. An initial advert on the refuse/recycling collection lorries will publicise the search, and the finished artwork vinyls will appear on the lorries in September. Melissa Poulson, Communications & Relationships Manager of Transported, said: “Two of Transported’s main aims are to bring the arts to unexpected places, and to celebrate what is so special about our local area. We’re delighted to be working with Sarah and Boston Borough Council on a project which combines both, through artistically commemorating the local heroes we almost certainly come into contact with, but might not realise are there. The fact that the project is on

refuse freighters not only makes something extraordinary out of the ordinary, but means that they will be seen regularly out and about in Boston Borough as a little reminder of the fantastic people we have here.” Sarah will be at Boston Market on Wednesday 1 July, along with staff from Boston Borough Council and the Transported team to talk about the project, encourage nominations, and offer some creative opportunities! Please come along to meet her and hear more about these exciting new artworks. Sarah Brown, artist, said: “This is a real opportunity to celebrate the work of individuals we all know. They do not ask for praise or recognition, but they do deserve it. I can’t wait to create exciting artworks based on the community in Boston. The idea for the project is to look at local people and groups who make a difference to the community – they could be the local postie, shopkeeper, playgroup leader, hospital volunteer, village hall caretaker, litter picker or sports coach who have been there for many years and are favourites among people. Those who quietly go about supporting their communities, often as unpaid volunteers.” Sarah, who has already spent a day on a refuse/recycling collection lorry with one of the crews, added: “The photographs I take when I meet people will be translated into illustrations and in turn made into artworks for sides of the lorries for all to enjoy.” Boston Borough Council’s Head of operations, George Bernard, said: “We are all really excited at the opportunity to recognise local people and their efforts amongst our community through Sarah’s artworks on our fleet, which may well be unique across local authorities. Our operational staff are particularly excited to see how the designs for their specific vehicles will come to fruition, which would not have been possible without the support of the Transported team and their ideas”. For further information, please contact Lucy Lumb from the Transported team, by emailing lucy.lumb@litc.org.uk or phoning 07834 520958. Sky Revolutions Ltd Takes Flight A new aerial surveying, photography and filming business has just launched in Langtoft and will use unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) to make aerial photography more accessible for everyone. Sky Revolutions Ltd was founded by qualified UAV pilot Ben Gorham after he spotted a gap in the market for affordable aerial surveying. Usually if a person required aerial footage they would need to hire an aerial photographer, a helicopter or plane and a pilot to fly it or else a scissor lift or cherry picker. Not only are UASs much less expensive than hiring a plane or helicopter but they also eliminate health and safety risks associated with working at height. They are also quicker to deploy and much more manoeuvrable, allowing them to get closer to the action and capture more accurate shots. The footage can be viewed from the ground in real time using a video downlink so that the pilot and the customer can see exactly what the UAS is seeing. This allows the pilot and customer to work together to capture the perfect shot. Ben has years of experience in property and roof surveying and realised that the process could be made much easier using UASs. He found this was also the case for a number of other services

including surveying development land, taking photographs for property listings, insurance assessments, surveying utilities, GIS mapping and agricultural surveys. He teamed up with local businessmen Richard Hiblin who has years of experience in launching successful startups and brings a wealth of skills and

resources from within his existing group. Having received CAA permission for aerial work, Sky Revolutions is now up and running and has already received a lot of interest from homeowners and businesses. To see more you can visit www. skyrevolutions.co.uk.

Young Beekeepers All schools have a playground and most have playing fields. Many, these days, have garden areas and some have a pond for pupils to experience outdoors learning. But only one in Lincolnshire now also keeps bees. Wyberton Primary School has added bee keeping to its curriculum in support of its initiative to promote business and enterprise. It’s early days – two of the school’s three hives have their first colonies of “baby” bees – but the aim will be, by next year, to harvest, market and sell Wyberton School Honey. Executive head of Wyberton and St Thomas’ Schools, Helen Richardson, explained: “A curriculum based around business and enterprise gives an opportunity to prepare the children for life after school and the world of work and to be successful as adults.” Staff and children have had to learn and research all about necessary preparations to ensure the bees thrive and eventually produce honey which can be gathered if the enterprise it to be profitable. This involved taking advice from a local bee-keeping expert Eddy Gadd about where best in the school grounds to position the hives, bee-friendly plants to introduce to the immediate environment and the wider school grounds and how to nurture the young bees in the first few weeks and months of life in their new home. When the honey is ready to be gathered the children will then work on strategies for promotion and marketing of their produce, label designs and selling and working to a profit. Bees, of course, can sting, but only rarely and usually for good reason (from the bee’s point of view), so as well as training and provision of proper bee-keeping equipment extra safety precautions have been taken. A special screen near the hives forces the bees to overfly the school playing field rather than buzzing straight across it and a second barrier

keeps children not wearing bee-proof kit at a safe distance from the hives, but close enough to observe the comings and goings. At the moment children and staff who are members of the trained bee-keeping team are feeding the young bees a special sweet solution and already the clever insects have built themselves a special ladder from inside the hive up to the openings on the upper tier where the food is provided. Gemma Hodgson, Key Stage 2 leader, runs the bee club. She said: “Already the children have learned so much about bees and bee keeping.” Design and Technology lessons, for instance, now involve children in making copies of the first commercially-supplied frames on which the honey will be collected. Bee keeper Paddy Everitt (9) said: “I never expected we would be looking after bees at school. I have seen bees in my garden – they could be from our hives. I like honey and can’t wait to taste our own.”

Marks & Spencer staff helping the community The 60-strong team of staff at Boston’s Marks and Spencer are finding new ways to help their community. Lincolnshire Community and Voluntary Service (LCVS) is working with the store to link staff with volunteering opportunities. Nationwide, Marks and Spencer offers its staff the chance to volunteer for one day per year at a charity of their choosing. Staff are encouraged to find a cause they would like to support and given paid time off work to do it. Jo Herbert, LCVS volunteering officer for Boston, said: “Marks and Spencer Boston approached us saying staff were really keen to make a difference. We were able to go through our database of organisations that involve volunteers and offer staff a wide array of things they could chose to do on their annual volunteering day that would assist their community. The scheme is brilliant because organisations not only get help for a day but a chance to make a connection with the store and individual members of staff who may be able or willing to offer further support in the future.”

Opportunities LCVS was able to tell staff about included: Boston Woods Trust – a chance to help hands on with planting, pruning, path making and general tidying Jerry Green Dog Rescue – a chance to help with fundraising, maintaining the buildings and grounds or exercising the dogs Salvation Army, Boston – helping to serve refreshments and lunches at community get-togethers Mrs Kim Bavetta administration assistant

at Marks and Spencer Boston, has spent half a day with St Barnabas Hospice Lincolnshire day centre in Boston helping out with an open day. She was keen to help St Barnabas Hospice because it supported her when she was caring for her late mother. In addition, Kim is preparing to spend half a day at a residential home delivering a cooking demonstration to residents. She said: “I think it’s a fabulous idea because I like to give back but don’t get a lot of spare time to volunteer.” Ann Randall, community liaison officer for Boston and Skegness for St Barnabas Hospice Lincolnshire, said: “This partnership between LCVS and Marks and Spencer is incredibly helpful. “As with most charity organisations we are reliant on volunteers and without them we wouldn’t be able to function. “It’s essential for us to create links with the community and keep up awareness in the community and to have the opportunity to create a link with an organisation like Marks and Spencer is phenomenal.”

Small gardeners Some of the borough’s smallest gardeners are now experts at small-space gardening. For they grew an abundance of salad crops and flowers in... a pallet. Children at nine primary schools took up the challenge in the spring to design and grow a garden based on a lorry pallet. Boston Borough Council supplied each of the schools with a pallet, a bag of compost and some seeds. The children used their ingenuity (with a little help from teachers and parents) to adapt the pallets into suitable growing containers – one was even a high-rise growing space. The pallets were provided by Western Power Distribution and the Sack Store and Johnsons Garden Centre in Boston. The compost came from Bettaland at Crowland, who turn Boston borough’s garden waste into compost, and the seeds were donated by a local seed company. The garden in a pallet was the brainchild of Paul Collingwood, chairman of Willoughby Road Allotments Association and a Boston in Bloom volunteer, who said he thought it would be good to encourage children to become involved in growing their own produce. There were prizes on offer from the Lincolnshire Food and Health Programme and the winner of £100 worth of garden centre vouchers was Wrangle Primary School. Theirs was a high-rise garden utilising left over weed-proofing membrane, chicken wire and strips of wood to keep everything in place. They even devised an automatic watering system using old plastic milk bottles.

Second prize of £50 worth of garden centre vouchers went to Boston West Academy where the children had fun recreating Mr McGregor’s garden, complete with angry Mr McGregor chasing naughty Peter Rabbit out of the vegetable patch. Third placed, and receiving £25 worth of garden vouchers, was Park Academy, where the Eco Club and Gardening Club grew a variety of salad crops. Other entrants – Carlton Road Academy, Old Leake Primary and Nursery School, Hawthorn Tree, St Mary’s Roman Catholic, Swineshead St Mary’s and Wyberton Primary Schools all received £10 runner-up garden centre vouchers. s this issue hits the doormats the summer holidays will be in full swing. Depending on which school your children attend you will be mid-way through anything from 6-8 weeks - worth of holidays. It’s a time for your children to relax and enjoy the best that the summer weather has to offer. It’s a slightly less relaxing time for parents though as the time is spent either ensuring the children are entertained or organising cover for while you are at work! Either way some serious organisation is required! Whatever your circumstances, many people do manage to get away (either at home or aborad) and enjoy some family time together. Before you know it though the summer is over, the nights are pulling in and the new school term is very much on the horizon. And this invariably means a trip to the shops to stock up with new bits and pieces for school. The biggest expense for most parents comes with the purchase of school uniform. I am feeling particularly unlucky this year – in a bid to get every last penny’s worth out of the school uniform I have always allowed plenty of “growing room” when buying. My daughter has grown so fast this year and not only caught up with but overtaken with the size of her uniform, leaving me the task of replacing her entire uniform and PE kit. Ouch! And don’t even get me started on shoes!!! After the uniform comes my favourite part – stationery! When I was at school I used to love choosing new stationery – a pencil case, pens, maths equipment, you name it. And then top it off with a new lunch box and school bag. It was my reward for not bringing the entire store down with my temper when shopping for the aforementioned uniform. So the next time you are feeling that the holidays will never end and you are running out of ideas to keep the children entertained remember that it could be worse - the uniform shop is on the horizon. Good luck!

Advice

School Holidays School holidays … endless days of fun and laughter … or a childcare nightmare? Read on for our guide on what you can do ❱ BY STUART HELLON

It’s difficult to find anyone to look after my child during school holidays. How old does he have to be before I can leave him on his own? You can be prosecuted for leaving a child under the age of 12 at risk of burning. Otherwise, there is no law which sets an age limit at which children can or cannot be left alone. If any child at any age is thought to be neglected or at risk of significant harm the parents may be prosecuted. The child could be taken into care by the local authority. Whether a child is judged to be at risk or not would depend on the age and development of the child and the environment in which he was left.

issues relating to children. Phone 0800 195 1635 Monday to Friday 8 a.m. – 6 p.m.

How old do children have to be to babysit? A child can babysit at any age – there are no legal restrictions relating specifically to age, whether the babysitter is being paid or not. However, if the child being looked after is thought to be at risk then criminal proceedings could be taken against the parents or the child could be taken into care.

How can I find out about childcare?

I think my neighbour is leaving two small children alone in the house whilst she goes to work. I’m really worried about them. What should I do?

Can my child get a job during the school holidays? There are lots of rules and restrictions on work for children under school leaving age. Children under 14 are basically restricted to babysitting and odd jobs. Local by-laws may allow 13-year-olds to do a paper round or light agricultural work. Between 14 and 15 children can work during school holidays in ‘light work’ for a maximum of five hours a day on weekdays, but no more than 25 hours a week in total. If they are 15 or over they can work a maximum of eight hours a day on weekdays, but no more than 35 hours a week in total. No child under school leaving age can work more than 2 hours on a Sunday. The restrictions are much tighter during term time. There are other restrictions about breaks and the type of work allowed. You can check with the local authority, who will also require an employer to obtain an employment permit countersigned by the parent.

School news

Calling teachers, PTA members, pupils… Do you have exciting news at your school? If you would like to share your school news please send details to editor@simplyboston.co.uk

Bicker Preparatory School The children have been taking part in Sponsored Events to raise money for outdoor equipment for the school. They came dressed in national costumes from around the world. Countries represented included India, Africa, many European countries and America. The children learnt about the different countries as they chatted to their teachers about where their friends costume originated. Then everyone changed into their PE kits for the sponsored events. Foundation Stage children walked around the back garden as many times as they were able. They enjoyed the course in wonderful sunshine. Meanwhile, Upper School children went to Bicker Playing Field and set up a course with hurdles, hoops etc. Every child was keen to beat their own personal best for laps around the playing field. Some of the older children completed more than 20 laps. Now, children will complete their sponsor forms and we look forward to purchasing outdoor den building and other equipment for the school garden. Headteacher Wendy Bell said “We are very grateful to parents and families for helping their children decide on a national costume and also for sponsoring their children in this event.

The children loved dressing up and talking to their friends about which country they represented.”

Pioneers Free School Academy Children at Boston’s newest school are to get a whole load of new fishy friends thanks to their green credentials. Youngsters at Pioneers Free School Academy in Fydell Crescent joined in the Big Schools Clean-up, part of the annual Big Boston Cleanup, and won a prize for their efforts of £300 to spend on improving the school environment. Presenting the cheque Boston Borough Council’s Jen Moore and Ian Farmer told the children how impressed they had been at the bags and bags of rubbish they had collected in and around the school grounds.

School principal Jo Bland impressed further when she revealed, as a direct result of the enthusiasm the children had for the clean-up, a “green team” had been formed to carry on the good work. The children are to use the money to pay for fish and plants for their new pond in the school grounds and for a high-tech bug hotel which will come complete with a tiny camera so they can watch the little critters making their homes inside it. Owen Brookes, the school’s very first pupil, and celebrating his sixth birthday on Thursday, received the cheque on behalf of the school. The school has an outdoors learning policy, encouraging children to get out of the classroom, and pursues an environmental programme, engaging with the natural world. The children help to grow fruit and vegetables in the school grounds and are to have their own mini-tools so they can help maintain the garden. The green team – Saimonas Stanaitis, Lloyd Thorn, Thomas Chapman, Markuss Vite, Alesha Granger, Megan Keightley, Scarlett Barkworth and Holly Cardwell – helped design the landscaped area at the front of the school The pond will add to the outdoor attractions alongside the current fire pit, where children gather for stories with teachers, enjoying marshmallows toasted in the flames. Summer Days Out

Summer Days Out This month we go a little further afield in our quest to find the best days out this summer

L

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN ast issue we looked at local attractions to keep you busy over the summer holidays. This issue we travel a little further to find fun things to do.

Fantasy Island, Ingoldmells With six extreme rides, ten family rides, ten childrens rides and a baby space cadets play area there is something for everyone at this resort. If the weather is not so pleasant then head into the Pyramid indoor entertainment centre. You will also find character shows, a sports bar a show bar and over 40 eateries. If you manage to find the time you can also visit Europe’s largest seven day market so you really can shop till you drop! The Parrot Zoo, Friskney The Parrot Zoo seems to be ever expanding and while you might like to plan a visit to have a look at the beautiful parrots, softbills and cranes they have on display you might not know that they now also have Bengal tigers for you to take a look at! There are also reptiles and mammals to look at and learn about. Throughout the summer holidays the Parrot Zoo is open from 10am – 5pm. Natureland Seal Sanctuary Skegness Now in their 50th year and celebrating a certificate of excellence from TripAdvisor the Seal Sanctuary at Skegness is still very much concerned with rescuing and rehabilitating orphaned and injured seal pups that have become stranded on Lincolnshire’s beaches. During your visit you will also get the chance to see penguins, tropical butterflies, reptiles, creepy crawlies, goats and tropical fish. The Sanctuary is open from 10am – 5:30pm with last admissions at 4:30pm.

“If you manage to find the time you can also visit Europe’s largest seven day market...” badminton, table tennis, croquet and the putting green are all available for hire. If you want to make a weekend of it or have a short getaway there is also a caravan and camping site so you can enjoy the beautiful surroundings. Lincoln Cathedral and Castle Lincoln has much to offer by way of a day out but we are going to concentrate on the Cathedral and Castle. The Cathedral run tours from Monday to Saturday – floor tours, roof tours (which give you views of inside of one of the cathedral roofs and lets you get up close to the stained glass windows) and tower tours (running through the summer this tour allows you to climb the highest tower in the cathedral and admire the views at the top). The Castle is open daily from 10am – 5pm. As well as enjoying the scenery and taking a tour you can also take a medieval wall walk, visit a Victorian prison and view a copy of the Magna Carta. With this year being its anniversary it would make a timely visit! There are also regular events, with August playing host to a medieval battle, a performance of the Sorcerer’s Apprentice, a children’s festival of history and a Steampunk Festival.

Jubilee Park Woodhall Spa Now under the stewardship of Jubilee Park Woodhall Spa Ltd who have made many improvements such as rose gardens, tree planting and outdoor recreational areas, Jubilee Park is especially good on a warm day. As well as the children’s play park and picnic area there is also a heated outdoor swimming pool which is a popular attraction. You can also visit the games hut – SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk |

Education Plan

Choosing the right educational setting With so much to consider and places vying for your attention, how do you decide where to educate your child?

Y

ou may not think about education when you are choosing a nursery but it might be worth asking where their children go to once their time at nursery comes to an end. Some nurseries are “feeder” nurseries where the children go to a particular school when they reach school age. If you already have a primary school in mind then they will be able to recommend nurseries to you. It can be a good decision as your children will get to know other children who will be in their class at school before they even start!! As usual make sure you view any nurseries that you like the look of and take the time to get all of your questions answered so that you feel comfortable leaving your child there. Many nurseries offer taster sessions so that your child can have a shorter time there and get used to the setting before they start longer hours. When it comes to choosing a primary school your choices may be dictated by where you live, also known as your catchment area. The schools which fall in your catchment area will be your choice. Many schools have open days so take the opportunity to go and have a look around and see if there is anything that you think your child would particularly like. Once you have decided you will need to apply for a place for your child. The council has information on this process if you are unsure, you can either pop in to the council offices or take a look at their website. If you would prefer an independent school then the process is slightly different and you should begin by contacting the school directly and they will talk you through their individual processes. Before your child reaches Year 6 you will need to decide whether you are going to enter them for the 11 plus exams. If they take them and pass then they will have access to the area’s grammar schools. Whether you choose a grammar school or not you will need to visit the school on one of their open days or open evenings so you can get a real feel for the kind of education your child will receive. It’s always useful to bear in mind your child’s interests and make sure they match up. For example, if your child is sporty then look at the sports facilities and ask about achievements in that area. If they are academically minded then ask about exam results. Make sure also that you get your child’s input! You may like it but if your child doesn’t get the same feeling then you may

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

“If your child is looking to go to University then UCAS will have all of the information they need...” have problems down the line! After GCSEs the big question becomes ‘what next’? A levels or vocational training? And sixth form or a college? If the secondary school your child is attending has a sixth form then it can be easy to continue there as they will be familiar with the school, staff and all of its processes. But it is always worth taking a look at all of your options so when you see an open day or evening advertised take advantage and pay a visit. If your child is looking to go to University then UCAS will have all of the information they need, (www,ucas.com) as they have details of all of the colleges and courses available as well as the grades required to secure a place on the course. Schools and colleges will work closely with your children make sure they make the best decisions when it comes to post-18 decisions but it is worth keeping involved.

Pub Grub

Pub Grub Why we love heading to the pub for a bite to eat

W

hether it’s after an evening walk in the summer or to escape the cold in front of a roaring fire in the winter we, as a nation, do love a trip to the pub. While we’re there we also love a meal, usually something we wouldn’t usually cook at home. So what do we love to eat in the pub? Tastes are always changing and the top pub meal will change from one year to the next. Today we are faced with so much choice we can pretty much take our pick of what we fancy. Top of the list is still the Sunday roast, all the satisfaction with none of the preparation. Of the Sunday roasts available it is still carvery which comes out on top, with people preferring more than one type of meat on their plate. Theme nights are still as popular as ever with curry nights, steak nights and burger nights the favourites. Alongside these theme nights there are also Tasting Menu evenings where you get to sample lots of dishes from the menu in miniature form. It’s a great way of sampling many dishes without having to have the full version. Early evening visits to the pub were made for sharing platters! With their popularity on the increase the variety you can get now will suit all tastes – texmex and nachos are always a hit but dessert platters and cheeseboard platters are new favourites. If you are unable to decide on what you want to eat a sharing platter is always a welcome addition to the menu as there are often several things to try. The message to ‘Eat Local’ is all around us and a very easy way to do this is to eat at the pub! Many pubs use local butchers and growers to source their ingredients. Aside from the positive effect on

“...we love these old faithful dishes, they go so well with the good beers that the pubs have on offer.”

the environment, locally sourced food tends to be particularly tasty as it hasn’t had to travel far to get to your plate! Fresh, seasonal produce often takes pride of place on a menu and rightly so, not only is it helping the local economy but also treating you to the best the area has to offer! We love a traditional pub meal! Pie and chips, fish and chips, steak, the list goes on. A perennial favourite, chicken in a basket, is also making a resurgence albeit presented in a more up to date way. One of the reasons we love these old faithful dishes is that they go so well with the good beers that the pubs have on offer. Finally, the specials board. Most of us have a ‘local’ which is our pub of choice, although the meaning has changed somewhat as this is no longer automatically the pub nearest to you! When it comes to enjoying the food the chefs all tend to have a selection of dishes that they do particularly well. This will vary from chef to chef but it’s meals like this that keep people coming back for the food. Have a think about the pubs you love and the particular food that you love to go there for – is it for any of the above?

Business Focus

Riverside Training (Spalding) Ltd

S

Riverside Training provides specialist childcare training across Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire, Norfolk and Rutland

o how does an independent training provider compare with the larger colleges in the area? ‘We are large enough to meet the training requirements of childcare providers,’ explained owner, Suzie Bulbeck, ‘yet we are small enough to care. We can be flexible in how we provide the training, tailoring it to individual needs.’ Clearly, this approach works as their learners achieve outstanding results. Last year, the pass rate across all of their courses was 95%. Riverside Training works closely with local schools and nurseries. They have a training centre in Red Lion Street, Spalding, but also offer bespoke in-house training. There has been a large demand from local childcare companies for this service and this is working successfully within childcare settings across Lincolnshire, Norfolk, Rutland and Cambridgeshire. Riverside Training offers QCF qualifications and Apprenticeships in Children and Young Peoples Workforce, including the new Early Years Educator suite of qualifications, Supporting Teaching & Learning in Schools and management awards at centres throughout East Anglia and the Midlands. Many of their courses may attract local or national government funding. How can you be certain of the quality of training? Well, CACHE is the national awarding body for children and adult care. In December 2014 they carried out a Quality Assurance and Risk Assessment Inspection and awarded Riverside Training an excellent grade one.

In addition to the quality of training, it’s the personal touch that makes Riverside Training so special and this is reflected in the many thank-you letters from individuals and organisations. ‘First-class training for staff.’ This is how Rachel Beresford of Munchkins Kindergarten Ltd spoke of Riverside Training. ‘I first used Riverside Training in 2006 as I needed to gain my Level 3 qualification to open my own day nursery. Suzie and her team supported me so well that I completed this within my time-frame ready for the opening of my nursery, said Rachel. ‘Munchkin’s Kindergarten Ltd has now been successfully trading for the last 8 years starting with one building for all our children. In 2010, we had to expand to the next-door property to cope with the demand for places. ‘We have used Riverside Training for all of our apprentices, mature learners and to upgrade qualifications over the last 8 years and have always been totally satisfied with the service both myself as an employer and my learning practitioners receive from them – so much so that I have just completed my Level 5 qualification. Suzie also assists in finding suitable staff for my nursery to meet with the growing demand of qualified people I require for the smooth running of my nursery.’ The demand for qualified childcare workers and teaching assistants has never been greater, so whether you’re an individual looking to gain a new qualification or an employer seeking to train your staff, now’s the time to sign up for a training course with a quality, successful, specialist training provider for all your training.

All about eyes Glasses or contacts? Contacts or glasses? How to decide which is right for you then how to choose

O

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

nce you have had your eye test and received your prescription you are faced with the task of selecting either a pair of glasses or contact lenses. In both instances your choice is wide and whilst it might be fun trying on everything in the shop it might be less time consuming to take a little advice… If you are fashion conscious then many opticians stock ranges of designer frames which are a bit of a one stop shop if you are looking for a style which is up to date and on trend. A pair of glasses which match your personality might practically jump off the shelf at you – bright colours, large frames, retro style or a particular shape, in which case problem solved! Much like the shape of your eyebrows, the right style of glasses can be dictated by the shape of your face. Round – this face type will benefit from narrow frames and a rectangular shape. Oblong – nice deep frames suit this type of face shape. Diamond – leave those eyebrows on show and try a pair of rimless glasses. Square – make sure the frames are a soft shape to complement the strong angles of your face. Oval – lucky you! Most styles of glasses will suit you, particularly rounder frames. When it comes to contact lenses people have concerns about wearing them but many of their worries can be addressed by having a discussion with their optician. Technologies in contact lenses are always improving and if you have thought about using them before but decided against it then now might be a good time to think again. Today there are many types of contact lenses which fit around not only the type of eyesight you have and any conditions you might have but also your lifestyle. If you are busy and prefer daily contact lenses you can pick up (or in some cases, have delivered) a set monthly. If you prefer to stick with the same pair

fortnightly or monthly there are lenses for that too. If you need bifocal or varifocals that’s not a problem and nor is age. If they are deemed appropriate then there is no reason why children cannot wear contact lenses and the elderly are also suited. The biggest concern many people have is that they won’t be able to put them in themselves or that they will be uncomfortable. When you decide that you want contact lenses your optician will work with you to ensure there are no problems. Whilst it does take a little practice at the beginning you will soon be able to put them in and take them out with ease. Once you have got your lenses your optician will keep in touch with you to make sure you have no problems and should you need to you can always pop in for advice and tips. Most opticians offer a free contact lens trial so if you are not sure you can take the opportunity to try before you buy!

Home Improvement

Garages and Outbuildings Having the space you want and need

T

here are many ways to add space to your home. Taking advantage of the space you have outside of your house is a good place to start. Whether it’s at the bottom of the garden or at the side of the house, making smart decisions will give you that all-important additional room. If you have an integral garage then there is the option to convert it into a room to give you more space in the house. Doing this you can add a dining room, family room, office or whatever you have the need for. Surveys suggest that nine out of ten homes with a garage don’t actually keep their car in them so it is space which is begging to be used! If you do like to put your car away in the evenings but also want that extra room in your house then consider building a garage next to the house. Provided you do not live in a listed building then garages are usually considered to be permitted development and as such planning permission is not required. It is always good practice to check though and all of the guidelines can be found at www.planningportal.gov.uk Round the back of the house you might like to consider a garden room at the bottom of the garden. Also referred to as home offices or studios these structures are usually made of timber but are connected to mains electricity for the purpose of being a fully functioning room. People who work from home but like to have their own dedicated space will benefit from a garden room. If you love evenings in your garden then you should look into summer houses. Whilst most summer houses look similar on the outside, the way they look on the inside is limited only by your imagination! Some people have a set of garden furniture in there, others decorate more elaborately. It’s not uncommon for a summer house to be decorated in the same way as a room in the

house! As well as being used for appreciating the nice weather and the garden some are used for entertaining (a fab space for a bar…) whereas others become ‘man caves’, the increasingly popular retreat for the men in the household. Get in there quick though boys as the ladies are reclaiming them and turning them into ‘she-sheds’!! Coming away from the fun and back to the utility, a garden shed can be the key to keeping your garden looking its best. Storing tools, the lawnmower, bikes and other sundries a garden shed keeps everything stored and secure. You can also keep seasonal garden items stored when they are not in use. Most new sheds come with a ten year guarantee and take very little maintenance so if you don’t have one then you should give it some thought. Finally, growing your own - flowers, plants, vegetables, the list goes on! If you want to start growing your own then the conditions need to be right and if you have the space then a greenhouse will provide those for you. If space is limited then you can buy smaller lean-to greenhouses or even smaller still portable greenhouses which use polythene instead of glass and can sit unobtrusively on the patio.

T

❱ BY TIM BARNES-CLAY

he new ŠKODA Superb Estate is the ideal companion for everyday family and working life. Examining it at launch in Bavaria, Germany, I discovered the new car has the largest boot in the automotive mid-class. Although the Superb Estate is only 23mm longer than its predecessor, the load area holds 27 litres more than before with the rear seats up. By putting the chairs down in the back, the capacity will increase to almost two cubic metres - 85 litres larger than that of the secondgeneration model. Even carrying long objects is possible; the front passenger chair can easily be folded down when required. This allows objects of up to 3.10 metres in length to be transported. The new ŠKODA Superb not only triumphs in terms of space, but also in its practical solutions. Up to 31 Simply Clever features are on offer for the model – 11 of which are in the boot alone. Just as with the saloon version, the latest ŠKODA Superb Estate is also optionally available with a virtual pedal, which enables you to

open the electric tailgate handsfree with a simple foot movement around the bottom of the rear bumper. Another new addition making its debut on the new ŠKODA Superb Estate is the practical tip-to-close function that initiates the electric boot closing mechanism with a simple pull. Additionally, folding down the rear backrests can be done at the touch of a button in the boot of the new Superb Estate. The variably adjustable false boot floor offers the highest practical benefits in the ŠKODA Superb Estate. This intermediate moveable floor can divide the boot in various ways making it more flexible. The system also creates practical storage space: the boot’s coat shelf and the retractable cover can be stored under the double floor. The roller cover has been designed as a manual retractable load covering. By applying gentle pressure, it automatically moves back and the boot is free for loading. The cover also has an automatic unlocking roller blind. This means it will automatically move one notch back when the boot door opens. Another practical feature is the new coat shelf, which can be found

under the roller cover. This can hold flat items, such as a jacket. Four folding hooks in the boot can help to securely transport items that might otherwise move around, for example shopping bags. The net programme is also useful here; one horizontal and two vertical nets can secure items when required. Finally, in the boot you will also find a removable LED torch, which can be used outside the vehicle. The flashlight is charged automatically in its holder as you drive, and is also magnetic. The ŠKODA Superb Estate I drove - and highly recommend - is the 2.0 TDI 148bhp six speed manual SE Business model. It offers bags of pull, up to 68.9mpg - and 0-62mph in a respectably quick 8.9 seconds. It’s obviously a larger, heavier version of its latest hatchback sibling, but this doesn’t affect its dynamic ability. All the key controls feel smooth and well-weighted – hearteningly classy, even. And the Superb goes about its business in a hushed, unruffled manner, irrespective of the engine you choose. The box fresh Superb Estate goes on sale in the UK in July, ahead of first deliveries from September 2015. SIMPLY BOSTON | www.simplyboston.co.uk |
