Some of my friends have already finished and started wrapping – I’m not that organised! As the weather has turned, make sure you wrap up warm and keep an eye on any elderly neighbours as the winter really is about to set in!

The doors, equipped with special sealing and locking mechanisms, are a no-fuss “passive” answer to reducing the risk of flooding. And you can view one of the doors in the atrium at Boston Borough Council’s Municipal Buildings in West Street, where it is on display. UK Flood Barriers have been busy in town fitting the new doors and removable flood barriers to properties which suffered flooding last December. These property owners have applied for and received up to £5,000 each to spend on flood-protection measures. The cash has been made available to Boston Borough Council by central Government.

A new mapping resource goes live on the soundLINCS website this week to help people find community choral groups in their area and to get Lincolnshire singing! Lincolnshire Sings is a mapping tool which displays choral groups across the county, allowing you to filter and search for a group relevant to you and to discover more information about them; including their contact details and rehearsal time and venue. The resource was put together by soundLINCS, working with the Lincolnshire Music and Arts Education Hub and Lincolnshire Music service, following a lengthy consultation period and a concentrated press and publicity campaign. The project received over 100 responses from all corners of the county, covering a diverse range of singing opportunities in Lincolnshire, from rock choirs to barbershop quartets, sea shanties to Gilbert and Sullivan. Allison Jackson, Programme Development Manager at soundLINCS, commented: “Lincolnshire Sings will be a one stop shop for aspiring singers or teachers wanting to
find groups close to them that they can get involved with. We hope it will encourage and enable young people and adults who love to sing the opportunity to easily find out how & where to go to join others with a passion for singing!”
The map can be viewed on the soundLINCS website at www.soundlincs. org/lincolnshire-sings-mapping. If you know of any other singing or vocal groups in your area not on this map please get in touch with soundLINCS at info@soundlincs.org or by calling us on 01522 510073 and we will happily include them.

Christmas in Boston 2014 Boston’s traditional town-centre Christmas tree will be the focus for the festive lights switch-on in November. Sponsorship by Magnadata Group and the Port of Boston will ensure that both the tree and the lights on it will be spectacular. Cllr Carol Taylor, who originated the Christmas event idea for this year, and is a member of the organising committee, said: “We want a real ahhh factor when this year’s Christmas lights are switched on. The Christmas tree is an annual gift to the town from the Port of Boston and this year and next will be a focus for the town’s Christmas lights switch-on. “The Market Place is the right place for the Christmas event to be held, but, because it is such a big space and the Christmas lights are spread thin it’s not much of a spectacle when they suddenly come on. That will be addressed this year by the Christmas tree lights. Cllr Paul Gleeson, chairman of the committee, said: “We are very grateful for the sponsorship and interest shown by the Magnadata Group. This is a large company, employing many local people, which has enjoyed success in our town for many years and it is nice to know that it has the interests of the town and its population at heart.” A committee of Boston Borough Councillors, business
representatives and representative of the public, Boston postman Callum Butler, is organising this year’s Christmas event which will take place at 6.30pm on Thursday, November 27. There will be entertainment in the Market Place, to include live music and school choirs singing, Santa will arrive on his sleigh with treats for children. There will be fairground rides and a Harry Potter-style wizard with owls (Silver Birch Falconry from Yorkshire). Boston’s own Endeavour Radio will MC the event and provide background music. For older children there will be a craft market and refreshments available and shops will stay open late. Tate’s Traditional Fish and Chips will keep serving until all supper customers are satisfied. The Transported Arts project will host an event called Light Waves, a programme of exciting digital light commissions especially for Boston, complementing the traditional Christmas association with light. In partnership with St Botolph’s Church and Pescod Square, Transported has commissioned artists Chris Squires (Impossible Arts) and William Lindley to create several new artworks that will be exhibited in November and December. Several projected pieces inside the Stump will include a spectacular illumination on the ceiling inspired by the solar system. Different artworks and projections will include digital cameras which will allow viewers to interact with the pieces themselves. A spectacular illuminated globe called “LightWeight” will enchant visitors of all ages.
Light Waves is a partnership to use the arts to add to the visitor experience, celebrating what makes Boston special. Light Waves can be seen at both locations on late night shopping nights on Thursdays, November 27, December 4, December 11 and December 18, with a special showing in St Botolph’s on Friday, December 5, as part of the events taking place to mark the anniversary of the flood. There will be free parking in all borough council-controlled car parks from 4pm that day, and then from 4pm every Thursday afterwards in the run-up to Christmas. There will also be free parking at borough council car parks ALL DAY on Saturday, December 6. All-day free parking in council car parks will also be available every Sunday, beginning November 30 until Christmas, and on Christmas Eve.

A Missionary In England? Francesca Ross, a 23 year old young lady living in Boston, has just returned home after eighteen months away from all its comforts and securities. So what is so surprising about that? Francesca has spent those months in Southern England, from Devon to Surrey, endeavouring to teach individuals of all ages, nationalities, and faiths, the precepts of Christianity. Busy techno, T.V dominated lifestyles leave little time for exploration of religious teachings, so having an opportunity to discuss them face to face on a one to one basis, can provide a unique occasion for an individual to satisfy their curiosity. After completing her university course she decided that this was a good time for her to take advantage of the support from her church and family and submit her application to church headquarters. Francesca could have been sent anywhere in the world to fulfil her ambition, but the church decided that her faith and dedication were needed in her own country. In February 2013 Francesca packed her bags, said goodbye to her family, and set off for Preston, Lancashire, to attend a Missionary Training Course. Two weeks later she was on her way to Devon to join the Southern Area Missionary team. All too quickly Francesca’s eighteen months of hard work, dedication, life changing experiences, and enjoyment came to an end. This time it was a sad goodbye to newly made friends, and return home to family, old friends, church duties and earning a
Local lady thanks Good Samaritans Lorna Edmonds from Swineshead telephoned the Simply Boston offices to ask if we could help her to pass on her thanks to the people who helped her after a recent fall. We love a story with a happy ending so were only too happy to help. Having only moved to Swineshead from South Wales six weeks earlier, when Lorna suffered a fall she was surprised by the amount of people who came to her aid. She says “Where I moved from, people wouldn’t have given me the time of day but here lots of people stopped to help me and kept me dry and warm while I waited for the ambulance. Kindness from people you have never met is really touching. I am very grateful and would like to say thank you.” After being checked over at the hospital Lorna is now back at home and improving slowly. So well done Swineshead, community spirit is truly alive and well. 6 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON
living. If you ask Francesca “Was your missionary efforts worthwhile?” she will respond with a great big smile and tell you. “It was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, but the most rewarding at the same time. I wouldn’t change it for the world. I didn’t earn a single penny as a missionary, I worked and saved in order to fund myself before I left. But what I did gain is worth far more than all the riches money can buy. I am grateful I had the opportunity to serve those in my own country. Among the many things I learnt being a missionary, this is one I’d like to share with you “Love and happiness are two things that double when you share them”.
Property Grants Boston Borough Council is offering grants for private owners with eligible historic properties to help with repairs, signage improvements and reinstatement of historic features. The English Heritage and Boston Borough Council Partnership Scheme in Conservation Areas (PSICA) has been running since 2012 and six properties have so far benefitted from the grants with another 16 in the application process. The scheme has been so successful that English Heritage has extended it into 2015. Boston Borough Council is still interested in hearing from people within the scheme area and will offer to pay for 50 cent of repair works and 90 per cent of reinstatement works, with priority given to historic shop fronts. Kelly Appleton has taken over the management of this scheme and is keen to hear from eligible property owners. She said: “I am very much looking forward to seeing the properties in the application stage come to completion, and to working with local people to get more properties in Boston benefiting from this scheme.” The partnership aims to achieve a high-quality built environment that Boston residents can be proud of as well as increasing visitor numbers and investing in local businesses. Church Street has been given a major lift since two schemes have been completed successfully. As well as repairing historic buildings within the Conservation Area, these properties will invite visitors to explore the Lanes off the Market Place giving vital economic regeneration to businesses within this area. Eligible properties include buildings on the Market Place, Bridge Street, High Street and many others. For advice, information or help with applying please contact Kelly Appleton at Boston Borough Council to arrange a meeting at your property on 01205 314339 or email kelly.appleton@boston.gov.uk

Paper Art Installations Art inspired by our area created in library workshops with local people is being exhibited in three libraries this Autumn. Transported has commissioned artists The Cabinet of Curiosity to explore Lincolnshire’s cultural heritage through paper craft, as part of their ongoing partnership with local libraries called Open Book. The “Storyville” series was created by participants guided by The Cabinet of Curiosity in a number of workshops which took place in the Boston, Kirton and Donington libraries in July and August, and the work from those workshops is now being displayed in all three libraries. The art reinterprets stories relating to Lincolnshire’s cultural heritage through the medium of paper craft techniques using recycled books and maps provided by the libraries. These site specific installations share a common theme of time and travel that relates to Lincolnshire’s contribution within navigational innovation. The Boston Library installation is called ‘The High Tide on the Coast of Lincolnshire’, and showcases a miniature origami paper landscape inspired by the imagery from Jean Ingelow’s poetry, the Pilgrim Fathers, and local architectural icons. Jean Ingelow was a 19th century female poet from Boston, a celebrated contemporary of the Victorian poet Tennyson and best known for her epic poem ‘The High Tide on the Coast of Lincolnshire’. Boston’s trade links to Europe in the 17th century fostered progressive protestant religious thinking in the region such as Calvinism. During the early 1600s many Boston radicals left England for the Netherlands, who then left the ‘old world’ of Europe for the ‘new world’ of America as the Pilgrim Fathers on the Mayflower. St. Botolph’s Church tower, known affectionately as the ‘Boston Stump’, is a striking architectural landmark which boasts one of tallest medieval church towers in England. The small scale installation is a pop-up paper landscape of Boston recalling the Shakespearean imagery of Jean Ingelow’s poetry. All objects are made from recycled maps distinct to the locality that combine origami architecture techniques commonly found in pop-up books. The ‘Clockwork Kirton’ installation at Kirton showcases a working paper clock inspired by the craft tradition of the Bothamleys at Kirton. The Bothamley family were a dynasty of clock makers, spanning four generations in Lincolnshire who were established in Kirton during the 18th century. The
Bothamleys specialised in conventional ‘longcase’ wall clocks, commonly known as ‘Norfolk’ clocks displaying distinctive craftsmanship with highly elaborate faces such as moon dials. The window installation displays elements of a paper clock such as coggs, decorative face, and pendulum made from recycled book pages combining origami and quilling techniques. The Donington Library installation, ‘Ode to Trim: Being the True Story of a Brave Seafaring Cat’ showcases a mobile of papercut silhouettes inspired by the story of Flint the cat, faithful companion of Captain Flinders the 19th century explorer from Donington.
Flinders was a distinguished English navigator and cartographer, who was the first to circumnavigate Australia and identify it as a continent. The installation takes the form of a mobile made from recycled book pages combining cut paper and silhouette techniques that will tell the story of Flint the cat. The piece aims to be a companion piece to the stained glass window in the local church dedicated to Matthew Flinders. Cabinet of Curiosity have also documented the project via Pinterest, and you can take a look here; http://www. pinterest.com/cabinetscurios/transportedopen-book-storyville/. Each issue Peter Bedford, leader of Boston Borough Council, discusses the important topics in and around Boston Boston Borough Council will be doing its bit to support businesses in the run-up to Christmas by offering free parking in its town centre car parks. Plans are now at an advanced stage for an event on Thursday, November 27, in the Market Place to launch the festive season in Boston, and the free parking will assist the success of this. This year Boston Borough Council has taken the lead and a committee of councillors, plus representatives from businesses and the public, have been working hard since early summer to put things in place. With the first anniversary of the flood coming around it is important that local businesses get as much support by way of your custom as possible. Many town centre businesses were affected by the flood last December and Christmas trade this year will be doubly important for them, so please consider doing your Christmas shopping locally first. On Thursday, November 27, there will be an afternoon and evening of free fun and entertainment in the Market Place which will include a Christmas lights switch-on at 6.30pm. The Christmas tree near the Ingram Memorial will be the place to be at that time. As we are approaching the time when flooding will again be called to mind I am pleased to see that real survey work has begun on the town’s £90 million barrier
flood protection scheme. Drilling is now taking place at the construction site to gather information for the design of the barrier and associated flood walls. Although we have known for some time now that the barrier will definitely be built, the works make it more real. The barrier will give real and improved flood protection for Boston as well as further regeneration opportunities and an improved waterways system. Everything is on course to meet the earliest possible construction timetable. The flood defence scheme is currently expected to begin construction in 2017 and be completed by December 2019. The Secretary of State has announced that he will not “call in” the Quadrant planning application. This means he will not involve himself in the planning application that the borough council’s planning committee has already indicated it wants to approve. The decision was taken at the special meeting organised so as many people as possible could put forward their views, it agreed to plans for 500 new homes – 100 affordable, shops, leisure and commercial development and a new stadium for Boston Utd on land at Wyberton. It will also provide the first section of Boston’s long-awaited distributor road. Borough council officers are now working on the Section 106 agreement. This will ensure contributions from the developer of £500,000 towards an extension for Wyberton Primary School, £200,000 for health provision in the area and £166,000 towards a travel plan. Peter

It has been a good summer for the town in terms of crime and anti-social behaviour
U
sually the hot weather leads to an increase in burglaries as people leave their windows open making it easy for thieves to get in but this summer, despite the warm weather, we have not seen such an increase. In fact house burglaries are down by 20% compared with this time last year which means fewer victims experiencing this upsetting crime. We continue to enforce the drinking restrictions in the town centre with alcohol being confiscated or tipped away almost every day but still the problem continues. It is now looking like January that the outright ban comes in place because the Council has not fully approved this measure yet but I am very confident it will be approved in its entirety. I have been receiving complaints about persons cycling through Straight Bargate and over St Botolph’s Footbridge. Usually when these people are seen by my officers they are asked to get off their bikes and push them. However this message doesn’t seem to be getting through so we will be taking tougher measures with people starting

to get Fixed Penalty Notices. I am sure some people will be very happy with this while others will say, “have you nothing better to be doing”. I can actually understand both points of view but when there is a problem that annoys and poses a risk to the public and polite warnings don’t seem to be working, we have to take a tougher line. Cycle crime is down 12% in Boston but people are still leaving them out in their front gardens and opportunist thieves are taking them. If you do leave your bike out in the open please buy a good lock! We have locks for sale at the Police Station which does the job so people are more than welcome to come down and purchase one. Your bike is worth a lot to a criminal, please protect it.

Advice
The Warm Home Discount Scheme - money off your winter fuel bills Worried about how you will pay your electricity bills this winter? You could be missing out on a £140 discount! Read on to find out more … ❱ BY STUART HELLON
What is the Warm Home Discount Scheme? The Warm Home Discount Scheme is run by energy companies. Not all companies offer the discount, but the largest ones are required by law to offer this rebate. The discount is £140 for winter 20142015. The money comes off your electricity bill, usually between October and March. You can also qualify for the discount if you use an electricity meter. Your electricity supplier can tell you how you’ll get the discount if you’re eligible. For example, you may receive a voucher you can use to top up your meter.
Is it the same as the Winter Fuel Payment? No! The Winter Fuel Payment is an amount between £100 and £300 to help pay your heating bills if you were born on or before 5 July 1952. Most payments are made automatically between November and December. You should get your money by Christmas. You usually get a Winter Fuel Payment automatically if you get the State Pension or another social security benefit (not Housing Benefit, Council Tax Reduction, Child Benefit or Universal Credit). If you qualify but don’t get paid automatically, you’ll need to make a claim. Phone the Winter Fuel Payment centre on 08459 15 15 15.
Who qualifies for a Warm Home Discount? Pensioners If you were a pensioner by 12 July 2014, you can qualify for a warm home discount if you get the Guarantee Credit part of Pension Credit. Your name or your partner’s name must be on your electricity bill, and your energy company must be taking part in the Warm Home Discount scheme. People on a low income If you are on a low income, it will be up to your supplier to decide whether you can get the Warm Home Discount. You may be eligible if you’re on a low income and you have a disability, long-term illness or children. The actual criteria used will vary depending on your supplier. Remarkable Creatures by Tracy Chevalier
On the banks of Plum Creek by Laura Ingalls Wilder
Remarkable Creatures is the story of the unlikely friendship between a gentlewoman, Elizabeth Philpott and a workingclass girl, Mary Anning. Elizabeth has benefitted from a formal education whilst Mary is possessed of a native intelligence that belies her young age. The women form a bond based upon their interest in fossil hunting on the beaches and cliffs around Lyme Bay. I loved the feisty heroines of this novel; in many ways they seem so modern. Away from the strict confines of London society Elizabeth enjoys freedoms few other women of her era would have known. Tracy Chevalier brilliantly evokes the spirit of an age when scientific discoveries forced people to question old certainties about the world and shook their religious beliefs to their foundation.
This is the third in a series of books relating the life of a young girl and her family living in the heartland of America about 150 years ago. Wilder’s engaging and descriptive prose vividly conjures up the daily trials of a life so very different from our own; before electricity, motor cars and all the conveniences of our modern life. A life where Pa builds a house from scratch, Ma makes all the clothes and music is playing the fiddle and singing. But the life is not just hardship and Laura and her sisters manage to get into scrapes and have fun. Those of you who are familiar with the TV adaptation of the books will recognise Nellie Olsen, who is every bit as mean to Laura in the book as she is on screen. I first read this book about 35 years ago and enjoyed it as much now as I did back then.

Focus on Swineshead
Focus on Swineshead Nestled in the heart of Swineshead, The Wheatsheaf has been offering old fashioned Lincolnshire hospitality for over three hundred years. With historical records dating back to the 1700s we present a (very potted) history of this popular venue 1700s Coaches and strangers would require a guide to lead them over the boggy terrain to Spalding or Sleaford, whichever direction they were travelling in. The land had not been fully drained at that time and a stranger to the district would not be familiar with the dry ground. From Swineshead The Wheatsheaf supplied the guides; it was known as the principal hostelrie in the town of Swineshead and also noted for its good accommodation (Pigot’s Directory of Lincolnshire). There was once stabling for sixteen horses at the back of the hotel and cottages for the ostlers positioned around the yard. The tethering rings for the horses were there until just after the Second World War, according to a newspaper article. The coaches would also leave their mailbags at The Wheatsheaf and it was from here that local people would collect their letters. This meant that in effect it was the village’s first Post Office. Some time at the turn of the century, Bank House, the property adjoining The Wheatsheaf, became the Post Office and the mail was left there. A few years later the Post Office moved to High Street in what is now part of Forresters Court Art Gallery and eventually to its present position.
1800s A document seen at The Gentleman’s Society in Spalding showed that in 1801 The Wheatsheaf belonged to John Jessop. He was part of a large family who owned much property in the village at that time. The Wheatsheaf passed to his son Zebedee Jessop and then to his son, another John. This meant it belonged to the same family for the best part of half a century. The Jessops, however, did not live at The Wheatsheaf all the time but sometimes put in a landlord. In 1820 or thereabouts, Edward Cole, landlord of the Neptune Inn on the river bank near Skirbeck church, moved to Swineshead to become the landlord. In 1821 Swineshead had 1,696 inhabitants. By 1826 William Kirkham had taken over as ‘mine host’ for a while. White’s Directory of Lincolnshire for 1826 stated that William Kirkham was the proprietor of The Wheatsheaf. Swineshead has a market on Thursdays, but it is now nearly deserted and very little business is done at it, except in the evening when the principal farmers generally assemble in one of the inns. The Morris Directory and Gazeteer of Lincolnshire for 1863 recorded Seth Cawthorn as being the proprietor of The Wheatsheaf a Commercial Inn and Posting House. It also had the following statement: Such was the state of this part of the country within the last century that strangers travelling to Sleaford in the wet season were

obliged to have a guide, people for that purpose being in attendabce and supplied from the Wheatsheaf, then and now the principal hostelrie in the town. In 1895 the Independent Benefit Society was meeting at The Wheatsheaf. The Boston Guardian reported that in January of that year the members attended a ‘splendid dinner provided by Host Pickersgill’. However, all the occasions taking place at The Wheatsheaf were not so jolly. Three months later on 1st April a sale took place at the pub. A disturbance broke out amongst a group of people. The landlord intervened and was punched to the ground by a Swineshead labourer George Holland. The landlady, Elizabeth Pickergill, attempted to pull George Holland off of her husband and she herself was struck by George’s brother Henry.

1900s By 1910 Ernest Callow Stammers had taken over as the landlord, he remained at The Wheatsheaf until 1918. According to a newspaper article in the Boston Guardian dated 7 September 1938 the original stables were still standing in the yard at the back. On 5 October 1938 George Houghton became landlord of The Wheatsheaf which he ran for almost 17 years with his wife Mary Ethel Houghton. In 1955 The Wheatsheaf was sold by the brewery and this pub became a ‘Free House’. It was in a derelict state and no brewery wanted to invest the amount of money required to restore it to its former glory. In May 1955, a Polish man, George Helsing, bought the place and he took control of the renovations. He replaced ceilings and added oak beams, put in twenty-seven hot and cold taps (as there was no modern plumbing in the building) and panelled the walls of the bar. In September 1982 The Wheatsheaf was purchased by John and Rita Hewitt. The opening evening of Friday 24 September proved to be memorable, at around 10.45pm, John and their youngest son Garry were serving customers at the bar when all the draught beers ran out due to unexpected high demand! On 1 April 2001 The Wheatsheaf was sold to Punch Taverns plc with then chef, Phil Baker, becoming the first leaseholder. On 1 April 2003 Phil transferred the lease to three local businessmen Carl Gibbard, Steve Gilmartin

and former landlord Anthony Luto. In August 2010 The Wheatsheaf was given a refurbishment. The old Public Bar and Pool Room was turned into a stylish Lounge and Dining Room. The former Lounge became the Sports Bar, retaining many of the traditional features including the unique hand carved bar front and real coal fireplace. Solid wooden floors were installed throughout, natural slate features and contemporary colours have refreshed the public areas while retaining the original character. The refurbishment provided an enlarged restaurant area, which together with flat screen television in the bar and complimentary Wi-Fi throughout the building have brought The Wheatsheaf well and truly into the twenty first century. On 28 May 2012 The Wheatsheaf returned to the Hewitt family when David Hewitt and his family assumed control. In November 2012 The Wheatsheaf received the coveted Cask Marque accreditation for its real ales. On 11 September 2014 The Wheatsheaf was delighted to announce it had been included in the Campaign for Real Ale’s Good Beer Guide 2015. The Good Beer Guide includes more 4,500 pubs in rural and urban areas with details of food, opening hours, beer gardens, accommodation, transport links, disabled access and family facilities. There are full reviews of every pub which have been tried and tested by CAMRA members.

Sixth Form
Choosing the right 6th Form Plan ahead to get it right
I
f you are in your GCSE year then you soon have to give some serious consideration to your future. What next? If you are looking to do A Levels then you need to consider not only what you want to study but also where. Your choices are influenced by many factors such as which institutions offer the subjects you are looking at and what your chosen career path is.
Choosing Subjects If you know what you would like to study at University then that will largely dictate the subjects you choose. Make sure you do your research – know exactly which subjects and grades your preferred universities require as it would be an absolute disaster to start your A Levels only to realise that they are not compatible with your university choices. There is more work involved with A Level study than there is at GCSE level so make sure you really enjoy the subjects you choose as you’re going to be studying them in depth. If you are not sure what you would like to study at University then there are certain A Levels which will give you a broader selection of course options when you do come to decide. These include the sciences (Biology, Chemistry and Physics), English, Maths, History, Geography and Languages (both modern and classical). These are especially important if you are looking at a member of the Russell Group of universities. Conversely, taking subjects such as Dance will not be weighted as highly as
❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
those above (unless, of course you are looking to study Dance!).
Choosing a 6th Form Your school might have a 6th Form attached to it but you are not obliged to choose it. You will be spending 2 years in 6th Form so it has to be right for you. Many 6th Forms hold open days and evenings which you can attend to get more information and, most importantly, a feel for the school and the staff. You may want to be with your friends, or had recommendations from your parents and teachers but remember that it has to be right for you so listen to the advice given but remember that you don’t have to follow it. An open day is your best opportunity to experience for yourself what life in 6th Form is like as well as the chance to take part in some sample lessons. You will also find out what grades you need to achieve at GCSE to be able to study at A Level. Most 6th Forms ask for at least 5 grade A – C passes at GCSE to include English and Maths but often 6th Form centres will have their own requirements when it comes to specific subjects. ä

Choosing the right 6th Form
As the most recent addition to Boston’s Post 16 provision, Haven High Academy Sixth Form is fast building an excellent reputation. Since opening its doors in September 2012, the numbers of students, from both inside and outside of the Academy choosing to study at the Tollfield campus, has steadily grown with some young people now travelling from as far afield as Sleaford and Skegness to take advantage of everything this new and vibrant provider has to offer. Following a £1.8 million pound makeover which was completed in 2013, Sixth Form students enjoy access to outstanding facilities. From the high tech television studio where the Creative Media students create their own programmes to the state of the art gym where all students can enjoy access to fitness facilities; from the University style lecture theatre where larger groups of students are taught or attend presentations by visiting speakers to the Drama studio complete with stage area, sound and lighting rig and professional standard dance studio; everything students need to complete their courses is provided. Boston Grammar School was given a charter to educate the young people of Boston during the reign of Bloody Queen Mary in the Tudor period. Ever since then, students have grown up to take a leading role in commerce, industry, agriculture, education, the Church and even government. The school is a centre of academic excellence: In 2014, Advanced Level students at Boston Grammar School attained better grades than in any other school or college in the Boston area. 46% of students achieved A*-B grades and 98% achieved A*-E grades. In Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Physics, students attained between 60-100% A*-B grades. Boston Grammar School is free to attend. With a 22 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON
“Make sure you do your research - know exactly which subjects and grades your preferred universities require as it would be an absolute disaster to start your A Levels only to realise that they are not compatible with your university choices.”
Questions to ask during your visit: What entry qualifications will I need? How many A Levels will I be expected to study? What have previous results been? Is there a catchment area? Can you meet the tutors / head of 6th Form? How will your parents be contacted? What clubs and societies are available to join? Is there any opportunity for sport? Is there a uniform or dress code? What are the facilities (eg canteen, study areas) like? Can you speak to current students about their experiences? What is the most studied subject? Do they have recommended subject combinations? What do students go on to do after their A Levels? If you don’t get your predicted grades what options are available to you from your 6th Form of choice? When is the application deadline/ What is the best way to apply?
good set of GCSEs from Year 11, anyone can join the school’s sixth form. Being part of the school’s history and traditions can be very beneficial for a young person’s future. Studying at Boston Grammar School raises aspirations among students: students study medicine, Maths and English at Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial College and Durham, amongst other universities. When you visit an open day or evening
you might like to take a list of questions with you. You will be hearing and receiving a lot of information so keeping a list handy of the questions that are most important to you will ensure that you don’t forget to ask anything. Talk to members of the current sixth form about their experiences (make sure you ask for the bad as well as the good) and be sure to see the facilities that aren’t linked directly to learning but are just as important such as the canteen.

Being the parent of a 6th Former So it only seems like 5 minutes since you took your child for their first day at Primary school and here they are now looking at potential sixth forms... ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
H
elping your child into the next phase of their life can be challenging for you both. From their perspective they don’t want to feel like you are telling them what to do and from yours, your child’s decisions might not agree with yours which can make you feel like interfering. But there is a middle ground to be had whereby you can support your child without making decisions for them. Rather than telling your son or daughter your sixth form of choice you can make them aware of the dates of open days and evenings of the sixth forms in the area and help them to choose the ones they want to attend. If these events are in the evening then go with your child to see what each sixth form has to offer and to ask questions of your own. When it comes down to it, if there is a decision to be made as to a favourite then you can sit down and discuss together the pros and cons of each one and see which one comes out on top in the balance. Unlike University, your child does not have to state a preference and so can hold conditional offers from several sixth forms. Conditional offers are dependent on GCSE grades and most 6th Forms will ask for specific grades at GCSE level for subjects you wish to study. You might be lucky and your child will know what they want to study at both A level and degree level in which case finding a 6th Form will revolve around which offers the best opportunities in those subjects. If your child is unsure then you can help them take a look at the subjects that they enjoy and, more importantly, the subjects they are good at. You can then help your child to focus on what job they might like to do in the future which involves the subjects they enjoy. After that you might like to check that the application forms have been sent off on time! Then it’s all about playing the waiting game until GCSE results day. It’s a really busy day at schools so if you can go with your child to collect their results then you will be able to help out if grades don’t go as expected. You may also find that once your child has their results in front of them they change their mind about what they want to study at A Level or even change their mind to a vocational qualification. If so you are on hand to make sure that the school are doing all they can to help you are offering your support when needed then it will make it much easier on your child. If they do change their mind, rather than
being difficult be glad that they are making decisions that are right for them and they are getting it right now rather than having to start again down the line. If the results have gone the right way and everything is as it was regarding choices of courses then you need to make sure your child accepts their place and then knows what day they are starting after the summer holidays. Then it’s time to step back and enjoy watching your child take their next steps in education. But don’t relax too much as the UCAS forms and visits to potential universities are not too far away…
“... you need to make sure your child accepts their place and then knows what day they are starting after the summer holidays.”

Cache in on the latest craze Are you looking to take up a new hobby?
I
f you are stuck for something to do on a Sunday afternoon or fancy taking up a new hobby then maybe Geocaching is for you. Geocaching is an outdoor recreational activity, in which participants use a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver or mobile device and other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers, called “geocaches” or “caches”, anywhere in the world. A typical cache is a small waterproof container such as a plastic tub or metal box, containing a logbook and pen or pencil. Once found, the geocacher enters the date they found it and signs it with their code name. After signing the log, the cache is placed back exactly where the person found it. The larger the container, the more is contained within it and contents can be traded. These are generally toys and trinkets of little value. When it began, Geocaching bore similarity to the 160-year-old game letterboxing, which uses clues and references to landmarks embedded in stories. Bringing letterboxing bang up to date, Geocaching was conceived after the removal of Selective Availability from the Global Positioning System on May 2, 2000, because the improved accuracy of the system allowed for a small container to be specifically placed and located. Typical cache “treasures” are not high in monetary value but may hold personal value to the finder. Aside from the logbook, common cache contents are unusual coins or currency, small toys, ornamental buttons, CDs, or books. A fun variation on a theme are objects which are moved from cache to cache called “hitchhikers”, such as Travel Bugs or Geocoins, whose travels may be logged and followed online. Cachers who initially place a Travel Bug or Geocoins often assign specific goals for their

Examples of goals are to be placed in a certain cache a long distance from home, or to travel to a certain country, or to travel faster and farther than other hitchhikers in a race. Higher value items are occasionally included in geocaches as a reward for the First to Find (called “FTF”), or in locations which are harder to reach. If a geocache has been vandalized or stolen it is said to have been “muggled”. Those who are not familiar with geocaching are called muggles, a term borrowed from the Harry Potter series of books. The most popular website on Geocaching is www. geocaching.com which has details of Geocaches all around the world. On the website you will also find more information about the hobby as well as the rules. There is also an App attached to the website called Geocaching (by Groundspeak Inc) which is a more direct method. Once the App has located you it will give you a list of caches in your area which just leaves you to get started. A word of warning though, once you get started you will be hooked. So how does all of this relate to Kirton? On the website / App you will also find details of a tricky to find Geocache hidden at Kirton Marsh. Let us know how you get on. Happy hunting! Keep warm in winter
With the weather now turning cold, what can you do to make sure you stay warm this winter? ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
Boiler Servicing: We rely on our boiler to provide hot water and central heating and so it is worth taking the time to look after it. Much like a car or something smaller like a petrol lawnmower, if your boiler is serviced regularly it will perform better in the long run any problem can be detected before it becomes serious and potentially lead to further damage. Also, regular servicing ensures that your boiler is working efficiently which will ensure that it doesn’t use more power than it needs to, keeping your bills to a minimum. Servicing only needs to be done annually and isn’t usually a long job, but make sure you use a qualified engineer. Many companies offer boiler cover which is paid in small monthly amounts giving you peace of mind that not only will you get a service every year but if something does go wrong you are able to get an engineer out quickly so you are not left without heating or hot water.
Chimneys: If you have an open fire then it is important to get your chimney swept every year. It is important for your safety first and foremost but also should the worst happen and you have a chimney fire, you will need to prove that you have taken good care of your chimney to avoid a charge from the fire service and your insurer refusing to pay out. Sweeping your chimney will rid it of soot, bird nests, cobwebs, general blockages and creosote which is highly flammable. It will also ensure that
“...should the worst happen and you have a chimney fire, you will need to prove that you have taken good care of your chimney...” dangerous gases are able to escape and not come back into the room and cause danger to you. If you need to find a chimney sweep then start with the National Association of Chimney Sweeps (NACS). You can find them online at www.nacs.org.uk where you can also download a free guide to heating your home safely.
Insulation: Insulating and draught proofing your home is an important way of keeping your heating bills down over the colder months. For loft and cavity wall insulation there are grants available so it is worth doing a little research before you book someone to do it as you may not need to pay anything at all. As well as the loft and the walls it is wise to ensure that your water pipes are insulated, both indoors and out. Once it begins to get dark make sure you close your curtains to keep the heat in and any draughts out.
Energy Bills: It is worth putting in a call to your energy supplier to check that you are on the best tariff based on your usage. If you feel that you are not getting the best deal then it is worth shopping around. Make sure you have your latest bills to hand and you can either call the companies or go online and use a comparison website which is much faster. If you have roof space which faces south you could consider solar panels – provided your roof qualifies there are schemes which provide solar panels for free and you can take advantage of the free electricity they generate, bringing down your bills in the process.
Finally: If you know of someone who is elderly or vulnerable who looks like they are not coping with the cold weather then let them know about the Priority Service Register – this is a scheme which offers free services to people who are of pensionable age, are registered disabled, have a hearing or visual impairment or have long term ill health. Services include help with your meter, free advice and information and help arranging your bills. 30 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON

Christmas
S
Planning the Party! ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
o Christmas is around the corner and everyone in the office has decided that a Christmas party within the next few weeks is the order of the day. And as you are the most organised out of the lot of you would it be OK if you were left in charge of making sure the Christmas party is the best ever and is talked about for years to come? Of course you’ve agreed, you are lucky in that the area has lots to offer by way of Christmas parties. After a year of hard work in the office, a Christmas party is a great way to get together socially before the Christmas break. As well as celebrating with those who you are closest with it is also a great opportunity to get to know people outside of work who you wouldn’t normally see day to day. For some added fun why not organise a Secret Santa – everyone picks a name secretly from a hat and spends a small amount on a gift for that person. Gifts are then pooled together so the person receiving the gift doesn’t know who it is from. Gifts can range from food to bath gifts and joke presents. But before you see to the finer details there are bigger decisions to be made! One of the most important things you can do is to make sure you book as early as you can once you have decided what you are doing. The best venues tend to book up very quickly and you don’t want to find yourself having to hold the party in the office as everywhere was full! Start by taking a look at everyone who is going to attend the party – what sort of thing do they like to do on a regular office night out?
32 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON
What are they going to be like regarding family commitments and how far are they going to have to travel? Consider sending round an email asking everyone what they would like to do and go with the majority – remember that it is impossible to please everyone! If there is travelling involved you might like to look into booking taxis in advance (this can be cheaper for large groups) or even hiring a minibus. This way your colleagues don’t need to draw lots to see who has to drive! So on to the choices available to you and your colleagues. Christmas parties take many forms, from drinks at the pub after work to a Christmas meal at a restaurant to an evening of bowling. How about ice-skating or a team game like Laser Storm? For those with a competitive streak how about Go Karting? Or something more traditional such as an outing to the local pantomime with a night out on the town to follow? If you like to celebrate with lots of people then there are some larger venues which provide party nights with food and a disco. Whatever you book make sure the venue confirms your booking on the email and be clear with everyone in the office about when deposits need to be taken and when the full balance will be due. Once everything is booked and monies paid, check with your venue if there is anything you need to do as you might like to add some final touches such as table decorations. When the party starts try and enjoy it, just because you have organised it doesn’t mean you have to be on call all night! Make sure at the end of the party that everything is paid for and everyone knows how they are getting home! And finally, if the party is mid-week make sure you know how to handle any potential hangovers the following day!

Focus on Spalding
Wardentree Lane ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
A
Drive down Wardentree Lane and you’ll quickly see that it is the industrial heart of Spalding
s well as Morrison’s Supermarket you will find companies from many industries side by side on the road from local companies such as Uniq Prepared Foods to County Interiors and national companies such as transport giant Scania Ltd. So it’s safe to say that diversity is high on Wardentree Lane! One of the companies on this road, Lloyd Loom, has a fascinating history that still influences the company today. Now synonymous with Spalding, if you haven’t been before then pay a visit, it is well worth the trip. Lloyd Loom is the name given to a woven fabric and furniture that was invented by Marshall Burns Lloyd nearly 100 years ago. It inspired a generation of furniture designers in the 1920’s and 30’s, associated with the art-deco period and the classic ocean-going liners of the time. It became immensely popular in the UK before the London factory was tragically destroyed in the war, spelling an end to large scale production. Lloyd Loom weave is made from twisted paper and wire and the frames are traditionally made from steambent beech wood. The furniture is renowned for its longevity and durability. Manufacturing of Lloyd Loom furniture was started in Spalding in 1985 by David Breese, a Lincolnshire furniture maker. He had been supplying a growing demand for reconditioned pre-war Lloyd Loom pieces and was beginning to experience difficulty in sourcing good examples of the most popular designs. He researched the techniques involved in weaving the original paper and wire fabric and commissioned new looms based on originals from the Lancashire textile industry. He was already experienced in beech bentwood techniques and was soon experimenting with his first prototypes recreating the original designs. He gradually trained his workers until he had a staff skilled in the unique trades required for the creation of Lloyd Loom furniture. The weaving of the fabric and braids required, the assembly of the bent-wood
34 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON
components, the complicated “upholstery” of the different models and the braid techniques required in finishing. In this way he revived techniques that had first been used in the 1920s. There was a strong demand for the new chairs and Lloyd Loom of Spalding extended the range, ventured into export and were soon sending the majority of their output to Germany, Holland and Belgium. The company expanded rapidly and in 1995 and several subsequent years won the Queen’s Export Award for Industry. Since then, the company has invested in cutting edge design and has introduced many new models, some in the classic Lloyd Loom style and some which explore other avenues, creating modern classics using the unique properties of the paper and wire material in innovative ways. The colouring process has also evolved over time, changing recently to recognise the growing demand for eco-friendly water based paints and the introduction of kraft paper dyed before the weave stage on some models, removing the necessity of paint spraying the end product. The best way to appreciate the craftsmanship is to take a look for yourself, the showroom is open Monday to Thursday from 8:30 – 5pm and Friday 8:30 – 4pm.

The main chiropractic treatment technique involves manual therapy, especially manipulation of the spine, other joints and soft tissues.
Aromatherapy Aromatherapy uses plant materials and aromatic plant oils, including essential oils, and other aromatic compounds for the purpose of altering your mood, cognitive, psychological or physical wellbeing. Aromatherapists utilise blends of therapeutic essential oils that can be issued through topical application, massage, inhalation or water immersion.
Acupuncture Acupuncture is the stimulation of specific acupuncture points along the skin of the body involving various methods such as penetration by thin needles or the application of heat, pressure, or laser light. Acupuncture aims to treat a range of conditions, though is most commonly used for pain relief.

purposes, to stimulate blood circulation and treat the symptoms of certain diseases. Various therapies used in the present-day hydrotherapy employ water jets, underwater massage and mineral baths.
Reflexology Reflexology is the physical act of applying pressure to the feet, hands or ears with specific thumb, finger, and hand techniques. It is based on what reflexologists claim to be a system of zones and reflex areas that they say reflect an image of the body on the feet and hands, with the premise that such work affects a physical change to the body.
Yoga Yoga are the practices or disciplines that aim to transform body and mind. The term denotes a variety of schools, practices and goals in Hinduism, Buddhism (including Vajrayana and Tibetan Buddhism) and Jainism, the best-known being Hatha yoga and Raja yoga. Dance Yourself Slim
Dance Yourself Slim For those who hate going to the gym and exercise in general, how about dancing to lose the weight and tone up those muscles? ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
T
hink about the celebrities on Strictly Come Dancing and how they look on the night of the final compared with how they looked at the beginning of week 1! If you’re not too bothered by the number on the scales but want to do something about those ‘bingo wings’ then dance can really help. There aren’t many hobbies that combine getting fit and healthy with having lots of fun and socialising. You will find that there is a type of dance for everyone, regardless of your age and level of fitness.
Zumba The undisputed king of dance fitness. Zumba is a dance and fitness craze which has slowly worked its way across the world and now has millions of followers. Zumba works by using a set of dance moves in different routines set to upbeat Latin tunes. It sounds simple enough but it’s not for the faint hearted! Saying that the moves are easy to pick up as they are repeated in different variations and you’ll find that if you go to the classes as a group of you go then you’ll have lots of fun as well as not feeling too
“There aren’t many hobbies that combine getting fit and healthy with having lots of fun and socialising.” foolish if you don’t pick certain moves up at first! And you’ll see results quickly as it is a great cardio work out as well as working all the major muscle groups. Calories burned per hour: 500-1,000
Jazzercise Using dance and fitness in a way that is similar to Zumba but it uses Jazz music instead of Latin. Each 60-minute workout routine blends dance and muscle toning movements choreographed to music including Top 40, jazz, country, funk, and classics. Every dance fitness class includes a gentle warm up, 30-minute aerobic workout, muscle toning and strengthening segment with weights, and a stretch finale. Calories burned per hour: 600
Street Dance Mainly using hip hop as its starting point, but anything goes, this is a high energy dance style and you can use pretty much any music so long as it has a good beat. You can learn routines in a group or freestyle and either use a selection of moves in a random order or create your own moves and start a new craze! No two routines are the same as Street Dance likes to put the emphasis on being an individual and seeing what you can create. Calories burned per hour: 400
Belly Dancing Definitely one for the ladies, belly dancing is one of the more popular kinds of dance to help you lose weight. It is also good for helping you tone up that middle area that a lot of us have 38 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON
trouble with! Again it’s more fun if a group of you do it together. It’s also great for all abilities and fitness levels as it isn’t as energetic as other dance forms and relatively easy to pick up. It’s great for several of your core muscle groups and if nothing else is a great party trick! Calories burned per hour: 275
Ballroom dancing Ballroom dancing is good exercise for both men and women but don’t be fooled, while it may look effortless and graceful when you see the professionals dancing, it takes a lot of work and practice to get to that point! The benefit of ballroom dancing is there is a lot of variety – dances can be slow or fast, anything from a slow waltz to jive, cha-cha to foxtrot. It is the most social of the dance types as many classes encourage you to switch partners for different dances. Calories burned per hour: 150 – 300 depending on the type of dance.

Fireworks
Helping your pets during Fireworks Bonfire Night is an exciting time, going to bonfire parties, eating toffee apples and, of course, watching spectacular firework displays. But what about our pets and how do we keep them calm?
F
“If you have a cat flap which locks then make sure it is locked for the duration of the evening.”
❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
or many pet owners, bonfire night can become a night full of dread (and the evenings either side of it) because of the effect it has on their animals. Dogs, cats and smaller animals such as rabbits are unable to understand fireworks and so know there is nothing to be afraid of but there are things we can do to make the evening easier. Most dogs and cats that are afraid of the loud sounds they are hearing will instinctively run and hide. Where you can, let them do it as it helps them feel less afraid. If there is nowhere to hide you might like to consider creating somewhere your pet can hide. If your pet does hide then leave them there until they feel safe enough to come out, it is not helpful to your pet to try and remove them from a place they feel safe as it will increase their fear again. If you have a pet which scares particularly easily it might be worth a trip to the vets before bonfire night. Most vets stock pheromone plugs which release calming scents which dogs and cats are able to smell but humans can’t. In extreme cases a vet can prescribe medication which will help your pet remain calm or recommend you take your pet to a behavioural therapist who will use various techniques to desensitise animals to their phobias. Also, while you are at the vets make sure your pet is microchipped so that if it does get scared and the worst happens and it runs away then it can be reunited with you easily when it is found. If your pet is already microchipped make sure that all your details are up to date – if you have moved house, for example, then your address details will need to be changed. On bonfire night itself, make sure you draw the curtains and close doors and
“In extreme cases a vet can prescribe medication which will help your pet remain calm or recommend you take your pet to a behavioural therapist who will use various techniques to desensitise animals to their phobias.” windows when it starts to get dark. If you have a cat flap which locks then make sure it is locked for the duration of the evening. An easy thing you can do to help your pets is to put on the television or play background music to distract from the sounds outside. If you keep small animals such as rabbits and guinea pigs it is a good idea to bring their hutches inside for the night if you are able. If this is not possible then make sure they have plenty of bedding and consider covering the hutch with a blanket for the night to help reduce the brightness and loudness of the fireworks. If you have a puppy or you find that on bonfire night your dog or cat starts displaying fear for the first time then there are plenty of online resources that will help you to identify the behaviour and give hints and tips on first time fear. Peugeot RCZ GT HDi 163 ‘GT’ STEMS from the Italian phrase gran turismo which pays homage to the custom of the grand tour. In other words the GT badge is meant to represent cars that are able to make fast, long-distance journeys in both comfort and style
I
am not quite sure the Peugeot RCZ HDi is my idea of a grand tourer. I guess that’s because I’m being snobbish. My image of a GT is an Aston Martin Vantage or a Maserati GranTurismo. But in its favour, the Pug is a tiny proportion of the cost of these cars and it does have the traditional GT two-door coupé with a two in the front, two in the back seating arrangement. Grand tourers differ from typical two-seater sports cars in a few ways: they are typically engineered bigger, and emphasis is often put on luxury rather than unadulterated performance. The RCZ GT HDi 163 has some of these points but the diesel engine is the irregularity. Or is it? Porsche unveiled its big GT – the Panamera Diesel in 2011 and, predictably, it’s the most economical Porsche in the entire vehicle range. So even though an oil-burner lump never seems right in a GT, it does actually make sense if you’re planning lots of miles. This is where the head starts ruling the heart rather than the other way around. With that in mind, the Peugeot RCZ GT begins to look like quite a good compromise. For a start, it’s a
44 | www.simplyboston.co.uk | SIMPLY BOSTON
❱ BY TIM BARNES-CLAY looker, especially after its January 2013 face-lift. It also drives well. Its low body and stiff suspension mean it hunkers down through the bends and it will hit 0-62 in 8.7 seconds, spinning up to 137mph on the straights. Okay, the rigidity of the car does make travelling over pothole-ridden roads rather a filling loosening experience, but comfort is assured for the most part. On top of this, the motor returns over 50mpg. That’s what you need if frequently filling up at the pumps isn’t your idea of fun on a European road trip. The athletic Peugeot costs £26,350 if you’re determined to buy new. For your money you get beefy 19 inch alloy wheels and an interior sports kit, complete with a flat-bottomed steering wheel and eye-catching leather seats. The manual six speed gearshift action is precise but the steering column, although adjustable for reach and rake, protrudes too much for my liking. The cabin of the RCZ is a pleasant place to be for you and your front seat travelling companion. However, as with all 2+2’s, you’re only going to get the extremely vertically-challenged or, more likely, a pair of toddlers in the rear seats. The boot is a different story; it’s gigantic and substantial enough to take two full sized suitcases and maybe a couple of golf bags. Again, another reason to go for an RCZ if motoring holidays are your thing. If diesel-power still doesn’t float your boat but the rest of the RCZ package does, then there are a couple of petrol versions available – a 1.6 in 154bhp and 197bhp states of tune. But if I were you, and if you really are petrol purist, then go for Peugeot’s most rampant RCZ yet – the 260bhp RCZ R. It was launched at the end of 2013 – and delivers thrills and spills like no Pug has done before.
