Over 25 years of fighting crime for the charity Crimestoppers
reached its 25th Anniversary.
Since its launch, Crimestoppers UK has gone from strength-to-strength, taking over 1.4 million phone calls, which has led to over 122,575 arrests, £126 million of goods being recovered and nearly £299 million of drugs being seized. Crimestoppers passes information about criminals to police forces across the UK and law enforcement organisations including Trading Standards and the Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA). Our independence from the police and law enforcement is what makes us unique, which is why so many people contact us with information anonymously. It is our work with volunteers in local communities that is integral to the success of the charity. Our network of 550 volunteers throughout the UK who are engaging daily with local people to find out about the crimes

Larry Miller comes to Donington Blues rock guitarist Larry Miller will be at The Royal British Legion in Donington on Thursday 20th February as part of his ‘Live & Outlawed’ tour, promoting his new live album. Last month ‘Live & Outlawed’ was included in the best blues rock CDs of 2013 in Classic Rock Blues magazine with a track featured on the cover mount CD. The same magazine had a reader’s poll and Larry Miller was voted number 3 in the UK only to be beaten by Joe Bonamassa and Walter Trout. Larry’s band features a superb rhythm section which now includes ex Gary Moore drummer Graham Walker who not only played on Gary Moore’s famous blues albums, touring with him extensively but has also played with BB King, Albert King, Albert Collins, , Eric Burdon and many more. Larry Miller is famous for his mesmerising guitar playing and high octane shows in the UK and around Europe, bringing his unique showmanship and energy to every performance. He holds the record for

New name for Donington Opticians Donington opticians, Molsom Family Eyecare Ltd is rebranding. Mr Molsom has decided to reduce his role in the company, although he will still be available for eye examinations. The new company will be named Clark Family Eyecare Ltd and will be wholly owned by previous co-director Mrs Cheryl Clark. As one would expect there will be a few minor changes. We have a new logo (see picture) and as you can see our new corporate colours are two tone blue. I am pleased to say there will be no change in our staff or services, you can expect the same friendly care and advice as you have always experienced. The Opticians practice was opened in Donington in May 2008 by Andrew Molsom & his sister Cheryl Clark after 11 successful years working together in Spalding, where Cheryl was Practice manager. Since opening the Donington practice, Cheryl’s daughter - Annica has joined the business and is working towards her Dispensing Optician qualification. Cheryl has over 30 years of optical experience and values the care given to the customers. “We pride ourselves on our professional services and the relationship we’ve built with local people, many of whom have become friends. It’s about putting people’s needs first every time.” said Cheryl. The business employs two additional Optometrists at Donington Tracey Griffiths who has been working with us since we opened in Spalding in 1997, and Robert Young who previously worked in
Boston. Andy and Robert both specialise in fitting Contact Lenses and Dry Eye Treatments. The practice caters for the requirements of both NHS eligible patients and private patients by offering a choice of eye examinations. “With today’s technology we can discover so much about a person’s general health as well as their eye care needs so we always encourage our patients to choose an advanced eye examination. This includes taking a photo of the retina; the inside surface of the eye. This is called Retinal Photography, and enables us to compare further photographs at subsequent eye examinations. This process helps us to detect even the smallest change and serves as an early warning system for all sorts of health conditions, not just those solely related to the eyes. High blood pressure, Diabetes and raised cholesterol levels are a few examples of what can be detected” said Cheryl. NHS patients can upgrade to an advanced examination if they wish for a nominal charge. In addition to the high-tech clinical services offered to patients, the business prides itself on the choice of spectacle collections, sunglasses and lens types available to suit everyone’s pocket. The practice teams are well-trained and are always very happy to offer advice on frames and lenses to ensure patients get the most from their vision and look good in the process. Clark Family Eyecare is located in the Market Place where we have disabled access. Local car parks are free.

Advice
Bailiffs at your door? by John Willoughby
If you owe money, one of the ways your creditors might try to get their money back is by using bailiffs he role of the bailiffs is to take your goods away and sell them to raise money to pay your creditors. If you’ve received notice that the bailiffs are coming, don’t ignore it. The bailiffs charge fees to come to your property and your debt will just get bigger if you don’t take action. Bailiffs shouldn’t threaten or harass you. If they do, you can make a complaint. You should also check the fees added to your bill, to make sure they’re not charging you more than they should. The rules about bailiffs are very complicated and what the bailiffs can do legally depends on what your debt is for. Bailiffs are commonly used if you have council tax arrears or if you have a court judgment against you. They can also be used for unpaid fines, child support arrears, rent arrears, income tax arrears and parking penalties (fines). The bailiffs almost always need a court order to take your goods away. Check with an advice agency whether creditors can threaten you with the bailiffs without taking proper legal action. If you’ve received notice that the bailiffs are going to come and take your goods away, you should get advice urgently. Do not ignore the notice. The bailiffs charge fees to come to your property and your debt will just get bigger if you ignore them.
Do I have to let the bailiffs in? In many cases, you don’t have to let the bailiffs in and they can’t force their way into your property. However, they are allowed into your property without your permission
if they can enter without breaking in. This is called ‘gaining peaceful entry’ and includes getting in through an unlocked door or open window. Sometimes, bailiffs are allowed to break in to your property. For example, if you’ve got unpaid criminal fines, bailiffs working for the magistrates’ court can, in some circumstances, use reasonable force to get into your home to seize goods. Also, in some circumstances, bailiffs can, with the court’s permission, force their way into commercial property if there is no living accommodation attached. However, it is unlikely that a bailiff would be allowed to break into your property in other circumstances. If this happens, you should get urgent legal advice.
example if you’re elderly, disabled, seriously ill or find it difficult to speak, understand or read English. Bailiffs shouldn’t discriminate against you because of your age, race, sex, disability, sexuality, or religion. This would include using racist, sexist or homophobic language.
Will they take everything away?
Depending on the sort of debt you owe, you might be able to complain:
There are rules about what the bailiffs can take and these rules depend to some extent on what the debt was for.
• to the person you owe money to (the creditor)
Can they take things that don’t belong to me?
• to the professional body the bailiff belongs to. There are several different professional bodies, depending on what sort of bailiff it is, so ask the bailiffs if they belong to a body and if so, which one
Again the rules are very complicated. The basic rule is that bailiffs can only take away things that belong to the person who owes money.
How can I complain about the bailiffs who come to my house? There are rules and policies about how bailiffs should behave. For example, they should treat you fairly. They are not allowed to threaten you or pretend to have more legal powers than they really have. They must take special care when dealing with people who are considered vulnerable, for
• to the court • to the police, if the bailiffs are committing a criminal offence, for example, threatening or assaulting you. If you have reasons to complain about the bailiffs, it’s best to get expert help. Don’t be ashamed to get help about bailiffs – it’s a very common problem.

House of the Hanged by Mark Mills
Mr Stink by David Walliams
Just the book for a long winter evening, House of the Hanged is set in a summery South of France in 1935 where former spy Tom Nash is rebuilding his life. His past catches up with him when an attempt is made on his life and Tom believes that he is in real danger. He is surrounded by those he holds near and dear who have all gathered to spend the summer in the Riviera warmth. Has one of them betrayed him to his enemies? Tom needs to find out the truth to save his own life. This is a real page turner and the surprises keep coming.
David Walliams star is definitely in the ascendant having written some of the best-selling children’s books of the past few years and seen them turned into highly successful television programmes as well. Mr Stink has always been a real favourite. Chloe is a very lonely little girl until she meets Mr Stink the local tramp who is the only person who has ever been nice to her. She offers Mr Stink a place to stay in her garden shed but her kindness has all sorts of repercussions. With Quentin Blake’s illustrations and David Walliam’s talent for funny and thoughtful stories this is well on its way to becoming a real children’s classic.

Focus on Kirton
Kirton: past and present ❱ BY KATE CHAPMAN
I
Home to more than 4,000 residents, Kirton is a bustling town with an interesting history t is one of the larger parishes in the Boston area, and has several satellite villages and hamlets taking their name from it, including Kirton Holme, Kirton End, Kirton Fen, Kirton Skeldyke and
Kirton Marsh. Located just five miles from Boston, town amenities include a library, town hall, primary and secondary schools, a wide range of local and national shops plus a leisure centre. And when it comes to eating and drinking Kirton has two pubs – the Merry Monk, on Willington Road, and the Black Bull Inn, on London Road. Neighbouring Kirton Holme is home to The Poachers Country Hotel, which has both a bar and restaurant serving homemade dishes, with menus changing weekly. The venue also boasts a spacious function room for special events and weddings. Originally the seat of Lincolnshire’s first Saxon kings, Kirton later became a market town. According to the Domesday account the settlement consisted of 52 households, 30 freemen, 16 smallholders, 12 ploughlands, 10 plough teams, a 60acre meadow, a church and two salthouses. In 1624 Thomas Middlecott, (later Sir Thomas) was empowered by a private act of parliament to found a free school for the instruction of Latin and Greek language, and English commercial and agricultural
If you know Kirton well, then the statue outside the Town Hall, in Station Road will be a familiar sight. (Above) The bronze figure, seated with crossed ankles and a walking stick is local farmer William Dennis (1841 – 1921) and was put up in 1930. The stone base is carved with three panels to represent potato production, drainage and wheat growing. Dennis made his fortune farming potatoes at the turn of the century and gave Kirton its Town Hall, the building outside which the memorial to him stands. He created Woodlands Farm from a number of fields he acquired in around 1870. The son of a farm labourer, he came 22 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

to be regarded as something of a visionary farmer, particularly in respect of his work with the potato. Dennis was also something of a philanthropist – for the King’s dinner to the poor following the coronation of King Edward VII in 1901, he provided enough potatoes to feed all of London’s poor. His legacy – Woodlands – is still a family farm today, now in the care of his great-grandson Andrew Dennis, who farms a mix of crops and livestock, including herds of Lincoln Red Cattle, Lincoln Longwool Sheep, Curly Coat Pigs, rare breed turkeys and chickens. education, to children from the town as well as the neighbouring villages of Sutterton, Algarkirk and Fosdyke. By 1835 the school had 40 pupils on its register, who were a mixture of free and fee-paying. During the 1830s a girls’ school for 14 day and boarding pupils, plus a Sunday school also existed in Kirton. Today, the current secondary modern school is called Kirton Middlecott in memory of its founding father. Moving forward to 1885 the village is shown in other records as having a station on the Great Northern Railway, chapels and almshouses for four poor women. and salads, and in April 2000 launched an organic vegetable box scheme, designed to provide affordable organic produce for people living locally. In addition to all of this, Woodlands practices an ‘open farm’ policy, encouraging school visits alongside open days for
customers and special interest groups. It also hosts an active arts program and demonstration days. * For more information about What’s On at Woodlands Farm visit www.woodlandsfarm. co.uk

The Perfect Pud ❱ BY KATE CHAPMAN
Roast beef and Yorkshire Pudding is undoubtedly one of the most famous British dishes and a firm favourite on dining tables up and down the country
S
o what better way to celebrate this great meal than by showing your support for British Yorkshire Pudding Day, which falls on Sunday, February 3, this year. The annual event was launched by Florence Sandeman, of website Recipes4us.co.uk, back in 2008 as a way of paying homage to this iconic delicacy. Although its name suggests Yorkshire Pudding originates from the north-east of England, little is really known about its ancestry - other than it has been enjoyed up and down the UK for hundreds of years. No-one really knows when the recipe was first used although some form of ‘batter’ or ‘dripping’ pudding as it was previously called, has been cooked for centuries. Earlier versions were much flatter than today’s puddings, and were cooked in a tin beneath a joint of meet being roasted on a spit over a fire, so it would catch all the drippings. The pudding was often served before the meat, perhaps with gravy, to help fill the stomach, so that less of the expensive meat would be consumed. And in some cases, where there wasn’t enough meat to go around, children would have been given Yorkshire Pudding as their main meal. Very occasionally it was served after the beef as a savoury too and sometimes leftovers were even eaten cold for dessert - spread with a little jam, or sprinkled with dried fruit. The name change to Yorkshire Pudding was made in 1747 - by Hannah Glasse in her cookery book called The Art of Cookery Made Plain and Simple. Today, individual Yorkshire Puddings are often preferred to the earlier versions which were made in one large tin. Ready-made frozen puddings can also be bought, while mini versions prove a tasty and popular canapé.
Why not celebrate British Yorkshire Pudding Day by whipping up a batch of your own? To make four individual puddings -
Ingredients
2 Eggs 180ml / 6 fl oz Milk 100g / 4oz Plain Flour 1/2 level teaspoon Salt Vegetable Oil
Preparation method 1 Pre-heat the oven to 220C (425F / Gas Mark 7). 2 Put around 3mm of oil into the Yorkshire pudding tin and place in the oven to get very hot. 3 Break the eggs into a measuring jug, and add enough milk to make it up to 300ml (10 fl oz) and whisk them together. 4 Add the salt and flour and whisk together until very smooth with no lumps. 5 Remove the tin from the oven and pour the batter into the centre of the holes, filling two thirds. Return to the oven and bake until well risen and golden. For four individual puddings allow 20 - 25 minutes. Interesting facts about Yorkshire Puddings • The first recorded recipe was in 1737 when it was called “A Dripping Pudding” • Ten years later it was re-written by Hannah Glass, the Delia Smith of her day and it became known throughout the nation. • Mrs Beetons recipe in 1866 was rubbish, Yorkshire folk blamed her southern roots! • The main purpose of the pudding was to fill people up before the main meal, especially the kids. “Them that eat most pudding gets most meat” • The main ingredients of a pudding are flour, eggs and milk, though the most important thing is hot fat and a red hot oven. Calling all chip lovers,
it’s National Chip Week! ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
Organised by Potato Council, this year’s Chip Week runs from 17th - 23rd February
T
hrough an extensive range of promotional activity, it aims to highlight the freshness, good value and great tradition of Britain’s high street chippies - and inspire the nation to tuck into a tasty portion! Whether it’s cod or haddock, comes with salt and vinegar and pickled onions, is eaten straight from the paper in the street or taken home as a tea time treat, fish and chips really is the nation’s favourite dish. But let’s go back to the beginning with the origins of the humble potato. Whilst first cultivated in Peru over 8,000 years ago, the potato didn’t arrive in Europe until the early 1500s and wasn’t grown in England until 1597. Introduced to Europe by the Spaniards, we get the word ‘potato’ from the Spanish word ‘patata’. Because they are rich in starch, potatoes are one of the world’s most important crops, up there with maize, wheat and rice. The potato has even been grown in space! Today, there are thousands of varieties of potato but the UK enjoys around eight ‘common varieties’ which we use in our cooking with King Edward and Maris Piper varieties said to make the best chips. Whilst it is accepted that fish and chips as a meal began in England, there is, to this day, great dispute as to whether it began in the north or the south. Either way, the country as a whole enjoys its fish and chips, regardless of geographic location.
Chip Week – Facts and Figures A visit to Chip Week’s website, www.chips. lovepotatoes.co.uk provides some fantastic chiprelated facts: 1. More than 1.6 million tonnes of potatoes are made into chips every year in the UK – weighing the same as over 14,000 blue whales or 4,000 jumbo jets. 2. The land required to grow potatoes for chips is 33,664 hectares – big enough to fit London’s Hyde Park 237 times, or 47,000 Wembley football pitches. 3. Over 250 million fish and chip meals are sold in the UK each year – that’s nearly 685,000 a day! 4. In one year we eat nearly three billion meals containing chips, with lunch time the most popular time to eat them (64%) and tea time the second favourite (24%). 5. Brits use at least 26 different words for fish and chips.
Where we live affects our chip choices, with people in the South preferring salt and vinegar on their portion while the Scottish are more likely than people in any other region to choose a portion of curly fries. People in the Midlands have a fondness for curry sauce and cheese with their portion; the Welsh are more likely than other regions to eat their chips straight from the oven; and a quarter of Londoners favour the French fry.
6. Using the right spuds for chips can make all the difference - to ensure your chips are lovely and fluffy try King Edward or Maris Piper. 7. Fish and chips outsell Indian takeaways by two to one. 8. The world’s largest fish and chip portion was made in July 2012 by Fish and Chips Ltd, London. The fish weighed in at 47.75kg and the chips 23.5kg, breaking the previous Guinness World Record which was held by the Wensleydale Heifer pub. 9. Celebrity chip fans include Rihanna, Kate Moss and David Walliams - and Michelle Obama recently revealed that her biggest food weakness is French fries. 10. A survey of 1,000 adults showed ‘chip shop chips’ are the nation’s favourite chips with nearly half (45%) of all respondents putting them first, followed by French fries (16%), oven chips (14%), potato wedges (8%) crinkle cut chips (7%) and curly fries (7%).

Elderly
There’s no need to be lonely ❱ BY KATE CHAPMAN
It’s a sad fact, but loneliness is a massive issue for many people in later life
“All of Age UK’s befrienders are fully trained volunteers, who freely give up their time to help support lonely older people.” Spalding District Age UK is open Monday to Friday and offers services including information on products for the over 50s, day care, a minibus and other social activities.
H
alf of all people aged 75 years and over in the UK live alone, while one in ten people aged 65 years or over say they are always, or often, feel lonely – that equates to just over a million people. And even more shockingly, half of all older people consider the television to be their main form of company. To help combat the problem of loneliness and isolation among our older generations, charity Age UK has developed a series of befriending services. These work by assigning each older person a trained befriender, who provides friendly conversation and companionship on a regular basis over a long period of time. This relationship not only promotes well-being and confidence, but can also help people in later life to keep in touch with the outside world. Many local Age UK branches including our own Spalding District - provide these befriending services, some via the telephone, while others operate a system where a volunteer visits the elderly person in their own home. This vital service provides a link to the outside world and often acts as a gateway for other services and valuable support. As well as providing emotional support, volunteers can also pick up on practical or health support needs the older person they befriended may have and - through liaising with Age UK - ensure
30 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING
the extra support is provided. Through the charity’s ‘Call in Time’ service, the elderly person receives a regular daily or weekly phone call, with the relationship structured so each befriender makes the call at a regular pre-agreed time. Those who have used the service have nothing but the highest praise for it, saying the regular contact has made a huge difference to their lives, while others who have tried it urge anyone else feeling isolated to give it a go too. All of Age UK’s befrienders are fully trained volunteers, who freely give up their time to help support lonely older people. The charity is always looking for more helpers and is keen to hear from anyone interested in getting involved. Alternatively, if you know of a lonely older person who you feel might benefit from Age UK’s befriending services, the charity urges you to get in touch too.

Focus on Crowland
Historic Crowland ❱ BY KATE CHAPMAN
S
Best known for its historic abbey and unique three-sided bridge, Crowland has a rich and fascintaing past
ituated on the Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire border, the pretty village’s humble beginnings date back as far back as 701, when a monk called Guthlac came to what was then an island in the Fens to live the life of a hermit. A monastic community followed in his footsteps, their abbey first dedicated to Saint Mary the Virgin, Saint Bartholomew and then in the eighth century, St Guthlac himself. Its medieval name - Croyland Abbey - remains today, but the building itself was destroyed and rebuilt several times during its early years. Following a fire in 1170 it was reconstructed again and from this point the area began to grow as the surrounding marshland was successfully drained. The settlement become more prosperous, while the Abbey went on to become one of East Anglia’s most oppulent. It was the abbot of Crowland from 1427, John Litlington, who is credited with founding Magdalene College, in Cambridge. He was licensed by King Henry VI to acquire a site so a hostel could be established in Cambridge for student-monks. This hostel went on to become Buckingham College, and eventually the renowned Magdalene College. The final abbott, John Wells (also known as John Bridges), held the abbey from 1512 until it was handed over to Henry VIII in 1539, following his orders for the Dissolution of the Monasteries. During the English Civil War, Crowland was captured after a short seige by Parliamentarian forces in 1643, and this is when serious damage was done to the abbey building. The nave roof fell in 1720, after which the main north aisle of the nave was refurbished. The impressive buildings remains in use as the parish church today. Such was its impact, that poet John Clare wrote a sonnet called Crowland Abbey, which was first published
TRINITY BRIDGE Another of Crowland’s most famous landmarks is Trinity Bridge - a unique three-way stone arch bridge that stands at the heart of the village, and dates back to the 14th Century. This unusual looking monument once spanned the River Welland and one of its tributaries, which have now been completely re-routed. The current bridge is thought to

have been built between 1360 and 1390, replacing previous wooden structures. At the time Trinity Bridge was an unusual and economical solution to crossing the waterways, as its unusual structure reduced the need for three separate bridges. Valentines
Valentine’s Day Gifts ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
Valentine’s Day is celebrated the world over every year on February 14
C
elebrating love, this is a day for exchanging cards and gifts with those most important to you. It is also a great opportunity for young love, with cards often being sent anonymously. In celebrating love and romance we send 25 million cards and spend a massive £1.3bn on gifts. Below we list the most popular gifts for him and her as well as giving you some ideas of how to add that personal touch.
Gifts for Her: 1) Flowers. With so many florists in the area this is a really good opportunity to shop locally and support these companies. Rather than picking up flowers from the supermarket or (don’t even think about it!) the local garage, take the time to talk to a florist and get a bouquet made up of her favourite blooms. 2) Home Cooked Meal. While restaurants are all well and good there’s nothing like a tasty home cooked meal to unwind and relax at the end of the day. 3) Lingerie. A perennial favourite with the men but please make sure you find out the correct sizes and where possible speak to the assistants in the lingerie departments as it is something they do day-in, day-out! 4) CD. Yes you know which artists she loves but how about being retro and putting together a ‘mix-tape’ of all of her favourites? 5) Jewellery. Rings, bangles and bracelets are the most popular here. Not forgetting big, shiny engagement rings… 6) Chocolates. Another traditional gift. But step away from the Milk Tray and put some thought into it. Many Chocolatiers give you the option of creating your own box. 7) Wine, Bath & Spa products. A glass of wine, a bubble bath and some luxury scrubs and creams to use. Always a winner! 8) Hotel Stay. This one does require some thought. Where do you most like to be as a couple? In the city or secluded in the countryside? 9) Romantic Dinner. So neither of you have to cook, head out to your favourite restaurant. 10) Perfume. Providing you have a snoop on the dressing table first it’s easy and it’s practical. And always well received.
Gifts for Him: 1) Experience Day. Top of the list most years, let him go wild. Driving sports cars, riding in helicopters or touring his football team’s stadium, there really is something for everyone. 2) Aftershave. A Valentine’s Day classic! 3) Watch. To make sure he’s on time for your date! 4) His Favourite Bottle. Be it fine malt whisky or Jager, you can’t go wrong with a bottle of his favourite tipple! 5) MP3 Player. Loaded with his favourite tunes or perhaps some new music for him to try. 6) Personalised Golf Balls. Or other sports equipment. A man whose hobby is golf is never too difficult to buy for! Head for your nearest club shop. 7) Football Tickets. Make a day of it and shop while he’s watching! 8) Books. This is a really broad type of gift! You can buy books by his favourite authors, something funny or full of facts. Maybe even a book to learn new skills. Just be brave and buy a book and not a book token! 9) Camera. If your man loves gadgets then a new camera might be at the top of the list. Definitely speak to your local retailer though as there are so many types of camera, each specialising in different uses so to make sure you get the right equipment do your research first! 10) Wallet. Somewhere stylish to keep your money when he takes you out for the evening…
Fun facts about Valentine’s Day Richard Cadbury produced the first box of chocolates for Valentine’s Day in the late 1800s. In medieval times, girls ate bizarre foods on Valentine’s Day to make them dream of their future husband. The most fantastic gift of love is the Taj Mahal in India. It was built by Mughal Emperor Shahjahan as a memorial to his wife. About 3 percent of pet owners will give Valentine’s Day gifts to their cats and dogs.
Family life
Now that our Christmas and New Year parties are over, we at Munchkins are planning activities to celebrate other cultures and religious celebrations during the coming year ❱ BY MELANIE FOSTER, MUNCHKINS KINDERGARTEN The governments Early Years Foundation Stage framework encourages practitioners to help children to ‘Know about similarities and differences between themselves and others, and among families, communities and traditions.’ (EYFS, 2012) With Spalding becoming more culturally diverse we are able to use first-hand information of how others celebrate their special times. We at Munchkins are looking forward to celebrating Chinese New Year which will begin on 31st January and will be using the ‘year of the horse’ to fire our children’s imaginations and use their particular interests to lead our future planning. We are also lucky to have families at our setting who celebrate this occasion so will be able to find out what families do to celebrate and include some of their traditions in our role play and storytelling. Valentines day is also a special day in our culture and we will be celebrating this by making cards for special people in our children’s
life’s, such as Mums, Dads, Grandparents and special friends as a way of saying thank you and showing them how much we care. Of course there are many more cultural and religious celebrations throughout the year and we will be especially focussing on those of our current cohort who include families whose roots come from Poland, Latvia, Portugal, Lithuania and
“We at Munchkins are looking forward to celebrating Chinese New Year which will begin on 31st January and will be using the ‘year of the horse’ to fire our children’s imaginations...” China. We, as adults are looking forwards to learning alongside the children and hope to gain a better understanding by sharing parents views and celebrating alongside them.

ow all the Christmas and New Year festivities are but a distant memory, I’ve had a little time to reflect, and decided that although I’m sticking to my resolution of ‘no resolutions’ this year, I might try and make one or two other little changes. Top of my list is time management. I don’t mean lateness - that’s always been a bug bear for me. Although I must admit now I have two little people in tow I sometimes find getting anywhere on time is not always an easy feat. No matter how organised or early you think you are, you can guarantee someone will need the toilet as soon as you’ve locked the door, fall over in a muddy puddle on the driveway so they need changing, or if you’ve got more than one, you can bet your bottom dollar that as soon as child number one has their coat, shoes and hat on they’ll remove all said items of clothing while you’re attending to child number two. This process will then be repeated at least twice if
you’re in a particular hurry! However, I digress. What I’m referring to is how I actually manage my time - as no matter what I seem to do, there are just never enough hours in the day. I’m fortunate that I’m able to fit my work in around looking after Nancy and Peter, for those mums who work full-time hours, I take my hat off to you, as I really don’t know how you do it. In between the school run, various activities and clubs, cooking and cleaning etc I constantly hear myself saying, ‘Just wait a minute,’ or ‘when I’ve done this’. I guess we’ve all been there, but the trouble is, they’re up growing up so fast, I’m in danger of missing out on all those precious moments because I’m too busy tidying up behind them or making sure the washing’s folded neatly. I saw one of those quotation plaques the other day bearing the message ‘Excuse the mess, my children are making memories’. I might just have to invest in one and place it above the kitchen sink as a timely reminder.....

Focus on Surfleet
Uncovering Surfleet’s past ❱ BY KATE CHAPMAN
A Surfleet community group is thrilled its hard work has come to fruition with the completion of a research project into one of the village’s most historic buildings “...it gave the children the opportunity to be educated before the 1870 Education Act came into place.”
T
he Fraiser Room was built in the grounds of St Laurence’s Church in 1764, thanks to the generosity of its namesake Lady Anne Fraiser, who set up a charity to fund the education of 20 poor children. Villagers have now been able to delve into its secrets and produce a 32-page book about the history of the little building, its benefactor and related history, thanks to a Heritage Lottery Fund grant. Committee secretary Judy Chapman explained it was just over four years ago that members of Surfleet Parish Plan Steering Group successfully responded to an invitation to apply for funding to research a heritage project. The Fraiser Room was their chosen subject and members set about looking into every aspect of its history, the findings of which have been published in The Fraiser Room Project. Surfleet’s free school was located in a simple building, provided by Lady Anne, whose dream was to bring education to the poor. A charity was set up by an indenture in October 1764 to fund the teaching of 20 girls and boys, while further funds were allocated in Lady Anne’s will, following her death in 1769, to give continued financial support to the school. The indenture also gave details of £600 invested in Turnpike Road, from Spalding to Donington, instituted by an act of parliament; the shares in the toll road and the
40 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING
profits were used to pay for a schoolmaster and provide education in reading, writing and arithmetic. The free school ran until 1870, when a new school was built in Station Road. The charity still exists today, while over the years the building has been used as a meeting place for community groups including the brownies, scouts, guides and WI. Today it hosts a bridge club, art classes and a popular mini-market and coffee morning, The group’s research uncovered details of the original charity trustees, Lady Anne’s family history, as well as that of the schoolmasters, plus the memories of residents who’ve used the Fraiser Room over the years. “The Fraiser Room is a very important part of Surfleet’s history,” said Mrs Chapman. “After all, it gave the children the opportunity to be educated before the 1870 Education Act came into place.” Pupils at Surfleet Primary School also carried out their own research into Victorian education and enjoyed a special event at the Fraiser Room, when it was transported back in time to its original state for lessons with a strict schoolmaster. * The Fraiser Room Project booklet is available free of charge from St Laurence’s Church, Surfleet Post Office and the mini market and coffee morning held every Friday at the Fraiser Room.

Home Project
A lofty solution ❱ BY KATE CHAPMAN
Think about your loft, and what springs to mind? A storage space for all your old junk, or perhaps a place suitable for setting up a giant train set?
I
f you’re running out of space at home, converting your loft could be the easiest way to create more room. As one of the most underused spaces in the home, a loft conversion is a far more cost effective solution than selling up and moving to a new, bigger property. The cost of an average loft conversion equates to around one third of the cost of moving to a property with an extra room, while the addition of a new room can increase the value of your home by up to 25 per cent. So, whether it’s an extra bedroom, office or child’s playroom your want, as long as you can measure 230 cm from the floor to the tallest part of your roof, you have sufficient height for a loft conversion. Under permitted development rights planning permission is not normally required for a loft conversion, although approval is required if you extend or alter the roof space and it exceeds specified limits and conditions. You can visit www.planningportal.gov.uk to find out more about the rules and regulations relating to this type of extension. It’s also worth bearing in mind that building regulations state that if a loft is to be transformed into a bedroom, bathroom, study, or playroom it must have a permanent staircase. Although the stairs leading to your new room need not be as wide as steps to the lower floors. If your loft is to be used as a ‘habitable space’ on a regular basis, your design must also comply with building regulations on issues such as fire safety, energy efficiency, ventilation, lighting and insulation. There are many practical elements to consider when planning a conversion, so it’s always wise to ask friends, family or colleagues who’ve undertaken a similar project for their advice before you start, as well as seeking the expertise of a professional builder or architect. If it’s bedroom you’re creating, think about how much extra it will cost to add an en-suite bathroom, but bear in mind how this might compromise the room’s proportions and factors such as will your system will be able to cope with the extra pressure required to supply water to an extra floor. Think about electrical points, have you got a party wall agreement with your neighbours, and how soundproofed will the new room be? How will you heat the new room - is your current boiler big enough to cope with extra radiators? Choosing the right windows is also an important factor as you need to make sure it is well enough insulated and ventilated.
“...building regulations state that if a loft is to be transformed into a bedroom, bathroom, study, or playroom it must have a permanent staircase.”

Fiat 500L Trekking 1.6 MultiJet 105hp
U
The Fiat 500L Trekking combines a fashionable look with special grip gadgetry called Traction+, which helps the car handle difficult and dicey surfaces
nder conditions of low or zero traction, the system detects slip, making it easy to maintain directional stability and control. The car is slow and cumbersome to begin with, but the technology certainly inspires confidence during bad driving conditions. The fresh model offers the same functional and practical qualities of the standard Fiat 500L, but has a more upright look. This is because the Italian automaker has raised the car’s suspension to enable it to drive over rough ground more effectively. Features on the 500L includes a touchscreen radio with Bluetooth, six airbags, ESC (Electronic Stability Control), cruise control, leather gearknob and steering wheel, dual zone climate control, side mouldings, parking sensors, electric windows, automatic lights with rain sensors, front fog lights and rear armrest. The Fiat also has high-tech fabric seat upholstery with eco-leather inserts. To be honest, all that the 500LTrekking lacks is a built in sat-nav. Other than that, my flagship test model came loaded with kit including 17” alloy wheels which were fitted with mud and snow tyres.
“.If you’re concerned about the wellbeing of you and your passengers then the Fiat will certainly tick your box.” 46 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING
To emphasise its outdoor disposition, the Fiat also has specific front and rear bumpers, a skid-plate and fog lights which help give it a rugged look. If you’re concerned about the wellbeing of you and your passengers then the Fiat will certainly tick your box. It’s one of the safest motors on the road today, as demonstrated by its prestigious Euro NCAP 5-star rating. In fact the 500L Trekking is the first car in the Fiat range to provide City Brake Control as standard. This system is designed to reduce the effects of lowspeed collision in traffic. It’s clever stuff. Overall, the big Fiat is a robust motor and will appeal to style conscious families who need the space for five people combined with functionality and practicality. Just don’t expect awesome acceleration and certainly allow yourself lots of time to overtake. With a 0-62mph pace of 12 seconds, life can get a little frustrating behind the sluggish, albeit inoffensive wheel of the Fiat 500L 1.6 MultiJet 105hp Trekking.
