“Remember, remember the fifth of November, Gunpowder treason and plot. I see no reason why gunpowder and treason should ever be forgot….” And so the poem continues. What a great excuse to wrap up, head outside and get warm in front of a bonfire before watching some spectacular fireworks! Whether you are having a get together at home or are going to an organised event it’s hard to believe that we are symbolically celebrating the foiling of a treasonous plot which occurred 410 years ago! Well, all of us apart from St Peters School in York which doesn’t celebrate the night out of respect to its former pupil, Guy Fawkes! If you are holding your own party this year you can find some delicious recipes in this issue to keep your guests happy and as always, make sure your pets are kept inside where possible and away from all of the loud noises. Elsewhere in the issue we think about the cold weather and look at the best ways to keep warm this winter as well as discussing insulation to make sure you keep in any heat you do generate! Finally, a big thank you to Arnas Lucinskas for this month’s cover photo, great picture. Enjoy the issue!

Spalding wins gold – again! Dedicated staff and volunteers have been thanked for helping Spalding win a prestigious horticultural award for the second year in a row. It was revealed this week that the town had won gold in the Large Town category of this year’s East Midlands In Bloom contest – the same result achieved in 2014. The award has delighted organisers who ensured that hanging baskets and plants in the town centre were looking spectacular for the visit of the judging panel back in July. Staff at Ayscoughfee Hall played their part by tending to the venue’s historic gardens, which were also visited by the judges. Cllr Angela Newton, who helped to organise preparations, said: “We are thrilled to have won gold again, it is a fantastic accolade for Spalding. “I would like to thank everyone who got involved and dedicated their time to making the town centre look magnificent. I would also like to thank businesses and individuals who sponsored baskets and tubs. “Spalding faced much competition, so to win gold is truly outstanding. Hopefully we can make it a three in a row next year.” Three other South Holland towns also won awards with Crowland, Holbeach and Long Sutton all collecting Silver Gilt accolades in the Small Town category.

Another podium finish for Andy Molsom Andy Molsowm of Molsom & Associates Optometrists took home a 3rd place and a 6th place recently racing at Castle Combe in Wiltshire. At Castle Combe, qualifying and racing was condensed into one day, and was a mixed grid of 41 cars. Qualifying didn’t go as well as expected, but Molsom started from 9th and 8th in class in race 1 and race 2 respectively. Andy said: “I was unlucky with losing so many places near the start of the race, but thankful that it wasn’t the end of my race. With very little run off at Castle Combe, the armco is very close, and that usually means disaster.”

Grants4Growth success celebrated Representatives from businesses across the region celebrated the success of a funding scheme which has boosted local firms to the tune of over £1million since 2013. A recognition event to mark the conclusion of the Grants4Growth programme took place at Springfields Events and Conference Centre in Spalding on September 8. Attendees included Anna Graves, Chief Executive of South Holland District Council, and Cllr Nick Worth, portfolio holder for business growth. The EU-funded scheme, which was managed by South Holland District Council’s Economic Development Team, has funded 107 businesses across Lincolnshire to help them grow and improve efficiency. Cllr Worth said: “Grants4Growth has been a resounding success and helped many different companies to expand and become more efficient.

“It was very pleasing to be able to welcome some of the companies involved to Springfields to share their success stories and achievements. “The event was also an excellent networking opportunity for these firms and we had plenty of positive feedback.” During the past two years Grants4Growth helped to create 85 new jobs whilst safeguarding 443 positions. It has also produced an estimated aggregate increase in turnover of £5.6million among the firms who have benefited.

The largest grant handed out was for £40,000, the smallest was £1,000 and the average amount was £7,926. The event saw several representatives praise the straight-forward and fast manner of the grant application process. SHDC’s Economic Development team also revealed plans to secure future funding to launch a successor to the scheme. Any decision on funding is likely to be made towards the end of 2015. For more information about the scheme visit www.grants4growth.org.uk.

New cleaning machine hits the streets

What’s on at

Cigarette butts and chewing gum are being blitzed from streets by South Holland District Council’s powerful new cleaning machine. The potent machine is highly effective at cleaning up cigarette butts, drinks bottles and chewing gum from pavements. It is electric and runs silently, using a lengthy vacuuming nozzle to clear hard-to-reach pavement cracks and kerbsides. A pavement sweeper is also being used in conjunction with the machine to clear dirt from walkways. Cllr Roger Gambba-Jones, portfolio holder for Waste Management, said: “We’re confident that the machine will prove extremely effective at clearing litter from our streets.

Dog service scoops Silver award The dedicated work of council staff who rescue and re-home stray dogs the district has been recognised with a prestigious award. South Holland District Council recently won a Silver RSPCA Community Animal Welfare Footprint Award – 12 months after being awarded a Bronze accolade under the same scheme. The award is for the council’s stray dog service as a whole and reflects levels of policy and procedure, kennelling arrangements, relief cover, re-homing, microchipping and education, including information provided via the Council’s website and Facebook page, as well as the care and welfare of stray dogs. Cllr Malcolm Chandler, portfolio holder for Environmental Health, said: “This has taken a lot of hard work from our Environmental Health team which runs the service and from those involved in bringing the service

in-house. “To win a Bronze and then a Silver award shows that the service has gone from strength to strength since we brought the function back in-house in 2013. It also shows that the team has worked hard and made continuous improvements to the service. “We want to continue to improve, especially around reuniting lost dogs with their owners quickly and effectively and continue providing high standards of care and welfare, working closely with our kennelling partners. “I would also like to urge dog owners to get their pets microchipped. We provide this valuable service which supports our key objective to re-home lost dogs.” For more information about the council’s stray dog service and microchipping visit www.sholland. gov.uk/environmnet/animal/welfare

Greater Lincolnshire, which includes North and North East Lincolnshire, Lincolnshire County Council, the seven District Councils, University of Lincoln, Bishop Grosseteste University, The Lincoln College Group, Greater Lincolnshire Local Enterprise Partnership, the Police and Crime Commissioner and the six Clinical Commissioning Groups have together put forward a bid for the devolution of specific powers along with associated funding from central government, to ensure we can achieve economic growth quicker than anywhere else in the UK. In itself this is a significant achievement. If successful the bid would increase the value of the Greater Lincolnshire economy by £8billion, create 29,000 new jobs, deliver 100,000 new homes and redesign locally, services for the administration of justice, health and social care, flood and water management and public safety. The bid would aim to grow (literally!) the areas of agri-food, manufacturing and engineering and the visitor economy. Agri-food in Greater Lincolnshire produces 25% of the Country’s vegetables and processes 70% of UK seafood. Manufacturing is currently worth £1.8billion and the visitor economy attracts 17.4million visitors to our coastal resorts, areas of outstanding natural beauty and heritage sites. Businesses tell us that access to high speed telecommunications as well as the road infrastructure are key to future growth. This means that we need recognition from government that both the A17 and A16 are nationally important in moving goods as well as people and funding should be devolved to improve those road networks, along with others in the county. The bid also seeks to devolve powers to reshape and restructure Further Education provision, funding streams of post 16 education and

Skills Funding Agency budgets, responsibility for funding relating to career information, advice and guidance and transferring the duty on schools to provide careers information to the Greater Lincolnshire LEP. This should then enable the delivery of higher paid skills, both professional and technical that respond to the needs of local businesses. With a growing workforce, alongside an increasingly elderly population who are staying longer in their homes and therefore not releasing them onto the market, requires the delivery of 100,000 new homes across Greater Lincolnshire, with an appropriate number of affordable housing and starter homes, supported by the appropriate infrastructure. Alongside this is the prioritisation of flood risk on what is a highly vulnerable coastline. A serious coastal flood would seriously compromise the UK’s capacity to produce high grade crops for up to seven years. An integrated approach to Health and Social Care that will provide more cost effective public health services, enable people to be more active and engage in cultural and arts activities, further develop neighbourhood based services, increasing care closer to the home and a model for emergency care, urgent care and planned care services that deliver high quality services which are both affordable and sustainable. These are just some of the proposals being put forward for devolved power and funding from central government, which if after dialogue with government and all the parties involved gets the go ahead, will then require new governance arrangements to manage the devolved powers that would be best suited to Greater Lincolnshire. That may well be the greatest challenge!

Look Beyond the Obvious Looking to what a house can be rather than what it is currently can make your dream home a reality

W

❱ BY HAYLEY HAMMOND, SIMPLY PROPERTY

“A viewer may see an integral garage, but a savvy buyer will see the potential of a straightforward garage conversion to add an extra room.”

hen looking around a potential new home it is often all too easy to take into consideration things which are completely irrelevant such as the furniture (which, of course, will no longer be there once you move in!). It sounds bizarre but it happens more often than you think! Decoration is also something which people find influencing them even though in most cases a coat of paint will solve the problem quickly and cheaply. The most savvy buyers, however, are those who are able to look past all of the superficial barriers in front of them and instead can see the true potential of any building. Let’s face it, no house is going to be absolutely perfect for you from the outset. We have previously discussed the importance of doing your homework and a little preparation before viewing any property. Not only should you have made a list of things that the house absolutely must have (number of bedrooms, for example) you should also research the area and look at surrounding homes. Have a think about what you could do to any house to turn it into your dream home. A viewer may see an integral garage, but a savvy buyer will see the potential of a straightforward garage conversion to add an extra room. A viewer may see a large garden which will need maintaining whereas a savvy buyer will see the potential to extend the house and take advantage of that land. And take advantage of the local knowledge of your estate agent.

SIMPLY PROPERTY If you are thinking of selling your home or are looking for your next home please call SIMPLY PROPERTY on 01775 640622 to arrange a free valuation or to be added to our mailing list. 10 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

Here at SIMPLY PROPERTY we have all the answers you need about the area and the properties around it. Often when you receive details of a property from your estate agent they contain a floor plan. It’s perhaps your first opportunity to start playing around with the space in your head. Whatever walls you see don’t necessarily have to stay put and before you know it you are about to bag yourself an amazing house because you have had the vision to look past what most other people see. It may be something as simple as changing the layout of a house without making any structural alterations – swapping a front room and a dining room around might just make all the difference. All details from SIMPLY PROPERTY contain a floor plan as we feel they are invaluable to selling a property by helping buyers to assess its suitability and compare it with other properties when in the early stages of house hunting.

Police news

Lincolnshire Police Volunteers What Could You Do?

V

The Police and Crime Commissioner for Lincolnshire Police, Alan Hardwick, challenged Lincolnshire Police to increase the number of volunteers within the county

olunteer roles are in place to help increase community involvement, provide volunteers with new skills and create an insight for those wishing to start a career with Lincolnshire Police. This project is ongoing with roles from The Special Constabulary, Volunteer Police Cadets, and Police Support Volunteers (PSVs) to Volunteer Police Community Support Officers (VPCSOs). Across the county Lincolnshire Police have 532 volunteers, 30 of which are based in Spalding. The vision of Lincolnshire Police is aligned to the National Policing Vision 2016, and the objectives of the organisation are to: Reduce Crime; Provide a Fair Deal for the People of Lincolnshire; Provide Police and Services that are there when you need them. To achieve these visions with community involvement we are looking for more volunteers to join Lincolnshire Police today. The roles of Special Constable and Volunteer PCSOs involve uniformed patrol and are available to anyone over eighteen

12 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

upon passing assessment criteria. These roles enable volunteers to interact with the community and receive training in order to fulfil the needs of the community. PSVs cover a wide range of roles from administrative support, vehicle maintenance and restorative justice, to name a few. Training is provided at a management level and allows the volunteer to see how the local station runs on a daily basis. Volunteering with any organisation is an excellent way to boost your CV, gain new skills, keep old ones in practice and fill up some of your free time, all whilst giving back to your community. There is no upper age limit and by volunteering in your area the local policing teams benefit massively from the local knowledge people bring to the roles. Whether in a uniformed patrol role or a ‘behind the scenes’ support role you can make a valuable contribution by allowing for additional time to be given to high visibility patrolling in communities and dealing with local issues. Currently Lincolnshire Police are looking for VPCSOs and Specials within Spalding

and its surrounding areas. So, if you think that you would like to be an active member of your Neighbourhood Policing Team, you can commit to a minimum of sixteen hours per month and take on a new, innovative volunteer role within Lincolnshire Police then please get in touch with the Volunteer Challenge Team at the details below: Visit the website: http://lincs.police.uk/Join-Us/Volunteers Call The Volunteer Challenge Team: 101 Extension 47244 Email us: 1000volunteerchallenge@lincs.pnn.police. uk Alternatively you can call into your local station and discuss local opportunities with the team there, why not ask an existing volunteer what they do and how you might help? We look forward to hearing from you soon!

Advice

Motor insurance When do you need motor insurance? ❱ BY LISA BARWELL

While driving or parked on a public road - If you drive your vehicle on the road, or leave it parked in the street, the law says that you must have motor insurance. It is a criminal offence not to insure your motor vehicle. - The police can ask you to show them your insurance certificate or cover note. If you can’t produce the right document on the spot, they will give you seven days to do so at a police station of your choice. - If you are stopped under the ‘fixed penalty system’, the police can tell you which police station you must go to. If you can’t produce a document within seven days, the police can seize your vehicle and sell it (although you can claim back the proceeds of the sale)

While keeping a vehicle off a public road If you keep your vehicle off a public road, even if it is in your driveway, garage or away from your home address, the law says that you must have motor insurance. You will not need to have insurance if your vehicle: - has a valid Statutory Off Road Notice (SORN) - has been kept off a public road since before 1 February 1998 - has been scrapped, stolen or exported and proper notification has been made - is in between keepers - is held in stock by an authorised motor dealer You can make a SORN using a V14 application form which is available from Post Offices or online at www.direct.gov.uk/vehicletaxrefund. If your vehicle appears to be uninsured, you will receive a letter from the Motor Insurers’ Bureau (MIB). This letter will tell you that you

are uninsured and warn you to either: - insure your vehicle or - ensure that your insurance company has correctly entered the correct insurance policy details on the MIB database (MID). If your record does not appear on the MID, then you should contact your insurance company immediately to get the MID updated. You can check the MID for free at: www.askmid.com. If you do not insure your vehicle within a specified time the DVLA will give you a fixed penalty. If you still fail to insure your vehicle it could be clamped, seized and destroyed or you could be taken to court. If you think that there has been an error you will be able to appeal to the DVLA, using their official complaints procedure. You can find more information about what to do as a vehicle keeper on the Motor Insurers’ Bureau website at stayinsured. askmid.com.

Choosing motor insurance Before you buy motor insurance, decide who will be driving your car, and how much cover you would like. There are three main types of motor insurance: • Third party insurance This is the minimum amount of insurance cover that you must have by law for your vehicle. Third party insurance only covers

you for damage to someone else’s vehicle or property, or injury to someone else in an accident which involves your car. This includes accidents caused by your passenger. If your vehicle is damaged in the accident you will have to pay for the repairs yourself. • Third party, fire and theft insurance This includes third party cover and, additionally, damage to or loss of your car by fire or theft. • Comprehensive insurance This includes third party, fire and theft insurance. In addition, it will also pay for repairs to your car. There is a range of extra cover that some policies provide, including: - cover for your own death or injury, or that of your partner or other member of your family, up to a limited amount - cover for your personal belongings if they are stolen from your vehicle or damaged - cover for your medical and legal expenses hiring a replacement vehicle. The cost of an insurance policy is called a ‘premium’. Ask for quotes from several insurers to help you to get the best deal for your circumstances. You will need to compare: - what each policy covers, and any exclusions (risks which are specifically excluded, for example, allowing drivers under 21 to drive your car) - the amount of any excess. This is the first amount of any claim, for example the first £50, that you will have to pay yourself. Some policies allow you to pay a higher excess in return for a cheaper premium. Most young drivers (under 21 or 25 depending on the policy), and inexperienced drivers are expected to pay a compulsory excess which is higher than usual.

Adult book choice Slade House By David Mitchell From the Bestselling author who brought us The Bone Clocks, Cloud Atlas and Black Swan Green. Keep your eyes peeled for a small black iron door. Down the road from a working-class British pub, along the brick wall of a narrow alley, if the conditions are exactly right, you’ll find the entrance to Slade House. A stranger will greet you by name and invite you inside. At first, you won’t want to leave. Later, you’ll find that you can’t. Every nine years, the house’s residents - an odd brother and sister - extend a unique invitation to someone who’s different or lonely: a precocious teenager, a recently divorced policeman, a shy college student. But what really goes on inside Slade House? For those who find out, it’s already too late. . . . Spanning five decades, from the last days of the 1970s to the present, leaping genres, and barreling toward an astonishing conclusion, this intricately woven novel will pull you into a reality-warping new vision of the haunted house story - as only David Mitchell could imagine it.

Spalding High School The Spalding High School academic year is now in full flow. Alongside the usual studies students have found time for exam and competition success. Two teams from the High School have successfully gained a place in the national final of the Nesta Longitude Explorer Competition. The competition presents students with the exciting prospect of engaging with satellite data as developers and inventors, rather than just end users. The High School teams comprised Year 7 and 8 students, meaning their success is even more exceptional as the competition is open to students from Year 7 to Year 11. To reach this stage, judges were interested

in the concept of the idea. The next stage of the competition sees the judges looking at how well the team can demonstrate their understanding of the criteria by developing their idea. The winning team will receive a prize of £25,000 for their school, as well as having the opportunity to win the individual prizes on offer. Further up the school three 6th Form students are celebrating their success in their recent

Willows Day Nursery Just three years ago, The Willows Day Nursery opened, with eleven babies joining them throughout the year. This year, they have graduated along with eleven other pre-school children. They were our first babies at the nursery so will always be very special to us. The nursery held a Graduation Barbecue for the children and their families following their Pirate Themed Sports Day and Big Toddle. The children raised over £1,000 for Barnardos, which is a fantastic achievement. Staff, parents and children took part in a range of pirate activities for Sports Day, including a Walk the Plank race, Ship Mate carry and Cannonball Kick. The weather was perfect

and whilst the children were busy being pirates, the parents of the Pre-School children were very busy themselves. They set up their own tent on Fleet Field and under the noses of all the staff, put together two beautiful presentation frames with all of the children’s handprints and names in. This was then presented to the staff at the Graduation Barbecue and now has pride of place within the nursery reception. We also had another reason to celebrate as the nursery, for the past eighteen months has been working towards The Healthy Child Award. The award was presented by Heather Steed from Healthy Child as she came to the nursery to officially open the new children’s full working kitchen. Part of the Healthy Child Award is linked to Healthy food and promoting healthy lifestyles. To give the children a life-long love of healthy food, the children now have their own mini kitchen that they use on a daily basis. Their current favourites are making bread, real fruit lollies and growing window sill herbs to feed to their new pet tortoise.

LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) exams. Ellen Baker received a Distinction (Gold) in her Grade 8 exam, with an almost unheard of pass mark of 98, whilst Seren Cave and Francesca Hayward received Silver awards in their Grade 7 exam. The LAMDA course is an extracurricular activity, taught by Ian Mann, which is available to students through the High School. Mrs Fisk, Head of Drama, commented that studying LAMDA has really benefitted the students in their development as young performers and is also excellent preparation for audition and interview. With Drama taking centre stage this term students throughout the year groups have also been busy rehearsing for the schools production of ‘The Sound of Music’.

Spalding Parish Church of England Day School The school recently held a Macmillan Coffee Morning. Children and staff baked cakes for our parents and carers to enjoy with a tea or coffee. So far we have raised £177.64, however there will be a further cake sale after school. Year 6 children supported the staff in serving cake and collecting donations.

Surfleet Primary School We have a packed agenda leading up to Christmas! We have already had a Class 1 trip which saw the Reception and Year 1 children, enjoying a boat trip from Springfields in to Spalding and then on to Ayscoughee for picnic lunch, nature hunt and various games. We held a non-uniform day on the 9th October for ‘Stand up to Cancer’. We had teams take part in a local Hockey and Football Tournament this month and our Harvest Festival was held on the 13th October. We will be having our Bikeability week for year 4, 5 and 6 pupils and raising money for Children in Need. Our Remembrance Service will be held at St Laurence’s Church in Surfleet on the 11th November. We will be holding a Road Safety Week in school from the 23rd November and another Hockey Tournament to attend! We have planned our dates for Class 1 and Class 2 performances in December, together with our Christmas lunch and party dates, our Christmas Church Service and a ‘Christmas Jumper Day’. I wonder if we’ll get a surprise visit from Father Christmas this year? Let’s hope the children have been good! SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk |

6th Form Options

6th Form Options If you are in your GCSE year then you will soon need to start focusing on the question “what next?” Taking the time to consider your options now will pay dividends in the future

I

t may seem early to start thinking about what you want to be doing in just under a year from now or, even more so, what you want to do for your career, but putting in the time now will ensure you are able to make well-informed decisions down the line. After your GCSEs you will need to decide your next step – whether it be A Levels or vocational qualifications you will need to think about the best place for you to study. The best place to start is to make a list of sixth forms and colleges in your area that you would like to consider. At this stage it is best to not rule anything out unless you have a really specific reason. Once you have your short list you can start to investigate a little further. Most schools and colleges will have a prospectus available and a website so start reading! If your school has a sixth form attached then of course you have the option of staying there but it is not obligatory so you should explore fully all of your options, even if you choose to stay put as a result! Perhaps the most important thing to bear in mind is the subjects you wish to study. At the end of your GSCEs you should have an idea about what you enjoy studying and, more importantly, what you are good at. Study at A Level is more in depth and so having an interest in the subject is important. If you know you want to study A Levels but don’t know what and don’t really have a clear idea of what you want to do afterwards then consider studying subjects

which appear often in entrance requirements across a broad range of degrees. Maths (and further Maths), English Literature, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Geography, History and Languages will leave a huge range of courses open to you at degree level. If you are thinking that a vocational qualification is the way forward then you can narrow your searches accordingly. Have a look at the courses available and how strong the ties are between the college and local businesses. If you are learning a new trade or profession then you will need to practice along the way and if you can do it in a professional setting then even better. When looking at courses and subjects check the entry requirements. Many A Level courses will have minimum GCSE requirements, usually a Grade C or above. Whether you choose A Levels or vocational qualifications you will be developing new skills and studying in a much different way so you will be expected to become a more independent, original thinker. Be confident that you will be able to manage →

6th Form Options

→ 6th Form Options (Continued) the workload. Similarly you will need to become proficient in time management so the physical location of the sixth form or college might be important. Once you have whittled your list down to your favourites the next thing to do is find out when their open days and evenings are and plan a visit. While a prospectus and website will give you information on sixth forms and colleges there is no substitute for a visit in person where you can get a real feel for the atmosphere. During your visit take the opportunity to speak to the staff and pupils so you can really gauge what the place is like. While looking at classrooms is very important take the chance to look a little further afield - visit the grounds themselves, the library, common room, study areas and most definitely the canteen! You are going to be spending a lot of time in these places over the next two years and you need to be comfortable in the facilities. Once you have decided on a place you may have an informal interview as well as having to fill in your application form. Take this opportunity to ask lots of questions (as well as answering them!), both from an academic point of view such as pass rates, where students go onto after finishing sixth form and the such) as well as anything important to you personally, for example, clubs you can join and opportunities to socialise. If university is part of your plan then you will be making your application whilst in sixth form, generally in the first term of your second year. If you are looking

to begin work once you have finished then you will similarly need to be thinking about compiling your CV and putting forward some job applications. Whichever way you are looking at going, have a look at the provision your sixth form or college has set out to help you achieve this. Most of all it has to feel right for you. As important as it is to have the opinions of your friends and family only you will know what it truly right for you. If you are in any doubt then speak to the institutions you are considering and ensure all of your questions have been answered before you take that decision. After all, this is one decision that must not be taken lightly.

6th Form Tips

Sixth Form Tips How do you go about making sure your time in sixth form is a productive and rewarding one? We provide our top tips

D

ecisions, decisions! It doesn’t seem like five minutes since you chose your GCSE options and now you are being asked to think about what to do after your exams! There are some choices ahead of you which will affect your life in a big way. A little forward planning before you start though can ensure you make the most of your time in sixth form. 1) Make the right subject choices It’s been said time and again that your subject choice can be critical to your success. Look at the subjects you enjoy, what you are thinking of doing for your career and what your sixth form has to offer and make an informed decision by doing lots of research. There are many people able to help you, from your teachers to your careers advisor at school and advisors from your potential new college. You can even ask your parents and friends for their opinions but remember, at the end of the day the decisions have to be right for you. If you need to, start by making lists and narrow them down. You will be able

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

to move forward with confidence if you feel like you have explored all of the avenues available to you. 2) Make sure you have the right equipment Whether it’s A Levels or a vocational course, having the correct equipment is key. Before you start back in September your sixth form or college will provide you with a list of all of the equipment you will need so make sure you have everything you need bought in good time. Have a good look and don’t leave it until the last minute because although your list may just contain simple items such as notebooks and stationery it could contain things which need ordering in good time so pay close attention.

3) Develop good study habits Being in your GCSE year you should already have some good study habits in place. The demands of A Levels or vocational qualifications are more than those placed on you by your GCSEs so planning your time will pay dividends. Make full use of your free periods and any resources availalable to you. Prioritise the tasks you have and write up notes as you go along (and if you have the time making revision notes now will stand you in good stead down the line). Read more widely outside your course texts – it will help broaden your understanding of the subjects you are studying and will prepare you well should you be hoping to go to university. 4) Ask for help Finally, and this is a biggie, always ask for help when you need it. Post-GCSE you will be expected to be more independent in your learning and if you have any questions or feel yourself falling behind then you must ask for help to ensure it does not spiral out of control. Staff are there to help you – all you have to do is let them know!

IN ASSOCIATION WITH

Pets Corner

Keep Safe On Darker Nights The nights have closed in and it’s getting dark at 4pm. This time of year can be unsafe, but your pets still need exercise or it can lead to behavioural problems. So what can you do? Here are some ways that pets and their owners can keep safe this winter.

Walking The Dog

• • • • •

Buy a high visibility coat for Rover, so you’ll spot him in the dark and be safe near cars. If you don’t want to buy a coat, try a high visibility collar or lead instead. LED lights are a good idea. You can attach them to collars. Always take a torch and check it over before you leave the house. Don’t forget your phone. Use an extendable lead rather than allowing your dog to run off into the dark. Exercise in a well-lit area.

Don’t Forget About Your Cat Some cats like darker evenings because the mice come out earlier! It’s a good idea to buy a reflective collar, so drivers can spot a bolting cat. Just make sure the collar is quick release that’s the kind that unclips if Puss gets tangled. On very dark and cold nights you might consider keeping your cat indoors, particularly if they are young or elderly.

a safe, warm hutch with plenty of bedding. Tie a duvet around the hutch when it’s really cold. Remember they’re at your mercy and not able to find elsewhere to warm up.

Dogs Die In Cold Cars Too We all know that dogs die in hot cars, but in winter your car goes the other way. Don’t leave your pet in the equivalent of an ice box. It’s a good idea to let their coats grow a bit now as well, don’t shear off all their warm fur because they need it! If you haven’t done so already, consider getting your pets micro-chipped, just in case they end up lost on darker evenings or have an accident.

Outdoor Pets As dusk falls earlier make sure your outdoor animals are shut in and safe from predators. A hungry fox will make a meal out of your rabbit, guinea pig or hens - it doesn’t need to be pitch black. Make sure your rabbit or other animal has

Don’t Forget The Birds Feed wild birds earlier than usual, because they’ll roost at sunset. High-fat foods and clean water are important during these cold months. You can provide some warm roosting sites too, such as a stuffed nesting box. Come and chat to us if you need any advice or help. Remember - be safe, be seen.

Christmas Gift Guide

Popular Christmas Toys 2015 At some point in our lives, every parent has experienced the trauma of trying to secure a “must have” toy for their child before Christmas. But Mums and Dads take heart, it’s not a new phenomenon! ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

A

s a nation we love Christmas. OK, we like to moan when Christmas displays go up in the shops in September but by and large it’s our favourite time of year. And as such we love to do it right. According to YouGov, Britons spend £22.5 billion on Christmas every year. Each household spends an average of £604 on presents, £174 on food and drink and £43 on cards, trees and decorations. So it’s safe to say we go all out! Christmas shopping can be a fun experience, provided we leave ourselves enough time (gentlemen, I’m thinking specifically about you here). Visiting the shops all decorated and festive for a shopping spree can be fun if done with friends. Even internet shopping of an evening to get it all done without leaving the house can be strangely satisfying. Perhaps the one spanner in the works comes in the form of the “must have” toy for children. As if there aren’t enough awesome toys to choose from, every single child must have the one thing that is in short supply. All hail the gods of marketing I suppose! While it may feel like this is a recent phenomenon it really isn’t. A hundred years ago toys were being released which quickly became a craze such as the hula-hoop in the

Coming back to the present, which toys are this year’s “must have”? Well Hamleys, Toys R Us, Amazon and Argos all released their top presents back in July (remember that moaning thing I said we did? Now would be the time to do it quickly) and here are what looks to be the main contenders – although don’t discount something newer coming out later just to keep us all on our toes!!

Home Improvement

Insulating Your Home With the cold weather on its way now is a good time to make sure your home stays warm this winter

E

nergy prices are always in the news as they climb ever higher. It’s especially annoying as the colder months see us using more energy as we heat our homes. More and more of us are taking to the internet to use price comparison websites to find the lowest tariffs but there are things that you can do to your home to ensure that when you do heat your house you are not losing that heat to the outside. We all know that heat rises so the first place to look at is your loft. An uninsulated or poorly insulated loft can be responsible for you losing up to a quarter of your heat through the roof. The thickness of your insulation should be at least 270mm of blanket-style glass or mineral wool. If you already have insulation in your loft check its thickness. Should you have none or wish to re-insulate to bring it up to current guidelines and your loft has easy access then it is possible to insulate it yourself. You can buy rolls of insulation from your nearest DIY store which will roll our between the joists then roll over the top. The rolls are built to last so they will pay for themselves many times over. If you are at all uncertain about what to do then use a professional installation team. Once you have put in all the time and effort to insulate your loft, as a last job make sure you put some draught excluding strips on your loft hatch to ensure that there are no draughts coming back down into your home. Once you have sorted your loft then it’s time to take a look at your walls. According to the Energy Saving Trust, in an uninsulated home you can lose

“Lagging water tanks and pipes and insulating behind radiators reduces the amount of heat lost.”

“According to the Energy Saving Trust, in an uninsulated home you can lose around one third of your heat through the walls.”

around one third of your heat through the walls. Most houses built since the 1990s will have wall insulation. If your home is not insulated and has cavity walls then you can have cavity wall insulation to stop the escape of the heat. The process involved an installer drilling small holes in the outside walls of your home and then uses specialist equipment to blow insulation in through the holes. Once the insulation is in the installer will fill in the holes made in the brickwork so you will barely be able to see where they have been. Due to its specialist nature this work must be carried out by a professional installer but your disruption will be minimal and it is work which can be carried out in just a few hours. After that you can think about your central heating and hot water. Lagging water tanks and pipes and insulating behind radiators reduces the amount of heat lost. The Energy Saving Trust recommends the fitting of a British Standard Jacket over your hot water tank as it will reduce your heat loss by around three quarters. Similarly, insulating your pipes will keep your hot water hotter for longer. Radiator reflector panels behind your radiators is a cost effective way of conserving heat. By placing a reflective panel behind your radiator any heat is reflected back into the room so less heat is lost through the walls behind the radiators.

Keep Warm This Winter

Being Energy Efficient The winter months can be a source of worry for many people as energy prices continue to rise, but there are some things you can do to ensure you are being as energy efficient as possible

P

erhaps the most important thing you can do it insulate and draught proof your house. Turn to page 32 to learn more about insulation and draught proofing. It is important to keep as much heat in as possible, especially if you are trying to save money. More people are buying electricity monitors so they can keep an eye on how much power they are using and, indeed, where the largest costs are coming from. You can buy a monitor from around the £20 mark. Consider your appliances and assess how energy efficient they are. With many appliances now being A rated you might find there are large savings to be had by upgrading to newer models in the long run. Also, when using appliances make sure you are using them efficiently. Wait until you have a full load of washing or the dishwasher is full before you run the appliances. On bright days you might like to hang the washing outside rather than use energy running the tumble dryer. If you haven’t already then change your lightbulbs to the energy efficient variety. As well as saving you money they also last longer than the old-fashioned lightbulbs they are replacing. And speaking of light, grab a compass and see if any part of your roof faces south. If it does you need to speak to someone about getting some solar panels put up there! There are still some companies who will install them for free for you, allowing you to take advantage of free electricity generated during the day without having a huge outlay. One of the quickest ways to save money is to switch your energy supplier which is an easy process provided you have internet access. Using

a comparison website is your best bet as they are able to compare a wide variety of companies and tariffs. Before you go online make sure you have the following details to hand: your address and postcode, the details of your current electricity and gas supplier, the details of the tariff you are currently on, how much you pay and your bank details to allow you to set up a direct debit (which is another good tip for energy bills – you will often receive a discount for paying by direct debit). Simply enter your details on the website’s form and the results page will bring up all of the options available to you. If you find that there are savings available to you then all you need to do is complete the switch form and your new supplier will do the rest for you – there won’t be any disruption to your energy supply. Just make sure that you don’t have any cancellation fees in place with your current supplier before you make any changes. SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk |

Divorce and the Blame Game

here are around 118,140 divorces each year in England and Wales and unless couples have been living apart for two years, one of them must apportion blame, whether it be adultery or unreasonable behaviour, upon issuing a divorce petition. This, clearly, creates unnecessary conflict and makes reaching a mutually acceptable agreement very difficult. Indeed, academics have shown how the legal requirement to assign blame can undermine attempts to resolve disputes outside of court. It also inevitably inflames matters and fuels conflict between parents which can cause significant distress for the couple and their children. Divorce without blame was provided for in the family law Act 1996 but it was never enacted. Indeed, the Government’s

own Family Mediation Taskforce recently recommended that divorce without blame be introduced. If blame were removed from the divorce process, it is highly unlikely that it would encourage people to separate. However, it would make it easier for people to manage their separation with as little conflict and stress as possible and would probably limit the likelihood of them having to enter the court arena in order to fight the issues out before a judge. In 2012, there were over 72,000 divorces where adultery or unreasonable behaviour were cited. Should couples have to participate in the ‘blame game’ simply to bring their relationship to a dignified conclusion? Many other countries to include Australia, the United States and Spain allow divorce without blame. Why not England and Wales?

Colin Luesby Interiors Celebrates 55 Years

A business doesn’t trade for 55 years by chance – a winning mix of quality and excellent customer service has allowed Colin Luesby Interiors to look forward to the next 55

aul Trevor from Colin Luesby Interiors is in a good mood. It’s ten o’clock in the morning and he’s already been working for four hours but he has a fantastic coffee maker and much to celebrate. The family business has turned 55 and is going strong. And Paul knows the reason why: “The quality of our kitchens speak for themselves. Add to that the standard of our work and the customer service we offer and that leads to repeat business. We’re always happy to see previous customers return.” Paul has recently fitted a third kitchen for a customer who first bought from Colin Luesby forty years ago. That sort of customer loyalty is rewarded by a fantastic aftercare service. During my visit a customer came in asking for replacement parts for an appliance no longer stocked. But that wasn’t a problem and a couple of codes later and the replacement parts were on order. Colin Luesby Interiors offer a full service from the very beginning when you begin to have ideas about what you are after right through to design and installation. There is a team of in-house fitters to professionally

fit the kitchen and plumbing, electrical and tiling is all included. New customers are always free to call but Paul recommends they hop in the car and head to Swineshead and have a chat about just what they have to offer. Vouchers

The Gift of Beauty Over Christmas billions of pounds worth of vouchers change hands and many people head straight out to the January sales to get them spent. Rather than joining the crowds you could be sitting back and relaxing instead...

C

hristmas shopping can be fun. And buying vouchers is not a difficult job so all in all a voucher is a good bet for a gift. It’s great for giving the recipient a huge choice and you can feel safe in the knowledge that you haven’t bought the wrong gift! Each year the gift card industry grows and it’s not difficult to see why, there is pretty much a voucher for everything! Experience vouchers – driving fast cars, hot air ballooning and so on, are increasing in their popularity but maybe the best idea might lie with something a little closer to home. As much fun as December is it can also be quite stressful. There is much fun to be had seeing family and friends, catching up with people who sadly don’t get as much of your time as they should and Christmas parties. On the flipside though there is the shopping for Christmas presents, Christmas dinner and other sundries and ferrying the children around to various pre-Christmas shows and parties. So finding time to relax can be something which quickly gets pushed back into January. Having a gift voucher for a local beautician or hairdresser can be a quick route to a New Year chill-out. You can take time out specifically for you and choose a product or service that you perhaps wouldn’t choose normally. Who doesn’t love a treat?! There are many salons in the area who offer gift

vouchers and your choice is varied. If you are given a voucher for a beautician then you might like to have a manicure and pedicure to treat your hands and feet. Or book in for a facial and give your skin some love after lots of late nights out! You could go all out and have a full body massage to ensure you feel completely relaxed. The larger salons will have a large menu of products and services to choose from or many beauticians who will visit your home will specialise. Either way you can choose the right pamper package for you! January is a month in which many people decide to try something new. Some make huge changes such as putting their house on the market or looking for a new job. Others like to take a look at themselves and make changes to their appearance. A voucher for a hairdresser can allow you to make as many changes as you want without breaking the bank. So if you fancy a new colour (or several new colours…) or a new style or even going from really long hair to really short it’s your fastest route to a new you! Most hairdressers sell the products they use so you could also treat yourself to some professional salon products to keep your new do looking its absolute best. Skoda Fabia SE-L 1.2 TSI 90PS

E

very Skoda Fabia comes with six airbags, stability control and oodles of safety kit. This includes a system that will brake the car if you get too close to the vehicle in front, and one that automatically applies the brakes after an accident to limit the scale of any ensuing collisions. This all helped the familycosseting Fabia secure the highest possible five-star crash test rating from the experts at Euro NCAP. Indeed, if you are after a new, inexpensive car, for you and your kids, then the Fabia challenges its closest contenders – the Volkswagen Polo and Ford Fiesta on cost. The Fabia is also economical to run and holds on to its value fairly well. Inside, there is a good deal of space – particularly when it comes to head and legroom. The rear is large enough for two adults, or three small children, to be comfortable, and the boot has enough room for the weekly shopping and a buggy. The cabin is a tad austere, though. Everything is uncluttered and tightly bolted together, but the slabs of black, unimaginative plastics, don’t inspire you. On the plus side, the build-quality continues with the switchgear having a solid

feel - and everything is simple to operate, too. On SE models upwards, you get alloy wheels, rear parking sensors, a decent stereo, and a leather steering wheel. My test car came in SE-L trim, which adds cruise control, climate control, audio buttons on the steering wheel and a handy automatic dimming rear-view mirror. The 89bhp 1.2 TSI model, under the spotlight here, is generally hushed and smooth. At motorway speed, wind noise is a bit of an irritation, specifically from around the windscreen pillars and the door mirrors, but it is not so bad that it’s a deal-breaker. The car also has quite a bit of low-down thrust, pulling hard in any gear. This means you don’t need to thrash the Skoda to get it up to

speed. The manual transmission is light and clear-cut, too, making the Fabia driving experience pleasurable, rather than a chore. The Skoda Fabia’s steering is sharp and agile enough to communicate what the front wheels are up to. The ride can get a little unsettled when the obligatory potholes appear, but otherwise the hatchback is fine - even handling the twisty bits keenly. All things considered, the Fabia is an entertaining, reliable, and largely refined little number – whether you are on the school run or taking your small family on holiday. And because the car has that five-star safety stamp of approval, this Skoda should protect you well if you are unfortunate enough to be in a collision.
