The band was formed in 2005 and gigged regularly for number of years until 2012 when the band split. Like all good bands they were not dormant for long and re-emerged by popular demand in 2013. The band’s set was particularly popular with crowds at this summer’s festivals at Needingworth, and latterly the Willow Festival in Peterborough where Burlesque rounded off the Saturday evening to a packed tent of enthusiastic followers. the organisation was launched in 1988 has reached its 25th Anniversary.

Since its launch, Crimestoppers UK has gone from strength-to-strength, taking over 1.4 million phone calls, which has led to over 122,575 arrests, £126 million of goods being recovered and nearly £299 million of drugs being seized. Crimestoppers passes information about criminals to police forces across the UK and law enforcement organisations including Trading Standards and the Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA). Our independence from the police and law enforcement is what makes us unique, which is why so many people contact us with information anonymously. It is our work with volunteers in local communities that is integral to the success of the charity. Our network of 550 volunteers throughout the UK who are engaging daily with local people to find out about the crimes

bringing relevant skills to the table that aids Crimestoppers’ work in their area. If you would like to get involved or learn more please contact regional manager for East Midlands Kiran Dhanda on kiran.dhanda@crimestoppers-uk. org This way, we can focus our efforts on those crimes and attempt to create a safer environment for us all to live in. If you would like to pass on information about crime anonymously you can contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or through the charity’s Anonymous online form at www. crimestoppers-uk.org. The show, which features children from all the Wildcats classes is the culmination of a full year of work - showcasing group pieces as well as work from the Wildcats Post 16 Academy and West End Wildcats troupe. The show, which was themed around the musical ‘We will Rock You’ was attended by a full house of parents and families of children involved in the theatre school classes.

Empty Homes Benefit from Discounts Scheme A host of local firms have teamed up with South Holland District Council to offer attractive discounts on services and products for empty homes. The scheme - one of a number which the council is promoting to help make best use of the housing stock - would particularly appeal to anyone wishing to sell, rent or renovate a property. However, anyone wishing to carry out home improvements or decorating could benefit too. Several estate agents thoughout the district have agreed to offer discounted selling fees through the scheme and some letting agents have cut-price administration fees. Anyone wishing to take advantage of the discount scheme must first contact South Holland District Council to obtain a qualifying document. It is simply presented to a participating firm to claim the agreed discount. To register interest in taking part in the scheme – either as a customer or a firm willing to offer a discount on a product or service – email privatehousing@sholland. co.uk or call the Private Housing team on 01775 761161. There are good savings to be made on a wide range of goods and services.” South Holland District Council is promoting the scheme as part of National Empty Homes Week, which began on Monday. The council is also involved with two further schemes aimed at homes which have been empty for six months or more. There is a lease and repair scheme and

Cllr Christine Lawton, the district council’s portfolio holder for housing, said: “Prevention of homelessness is a strategic priority for the authority. “These figures are testament to the effectiveness of key council-supported services in the district. “I would encourage anybody experiencing housing-related issues to seek advice at the earliest available opportunity.” Currently there is one family in temporary accommodation, awaiting permanent accommodation, that the council owes a duty to under homeless legislation. New EXCITING OPPORTUNITY to join transported board Applications are being invited to join the Management Group of Transported, the community-based arts programme that has been taking place in Boston Borough and South Holland since May 2013. As part of the preparation for this next, ambitious phase of the programme, Transported is now inviting applications for new members for the Management Group, which will play a crucial role in driving forward the project’s ambitious plans to make a real difference in the two areas and strategically planning ahead to sustain the programme beyond the initial funding. Transported are looking for members with a real interest and enthusiasm for the project and a wide variety of skills and experience which do not have to be solely arts based; applications are encouraged

from other sectors, eg. health and wellbeing, haulage, heritage etc. As part of an ongoing aim to work closely with the communities surrounding the programme, Transported would also love to hear from those connected with existing local networks and businesses. This is one of the biggest and most exciting arts and community orientated projects to ever take place in Boston Borough and South Holland – this is your opportunity to get involved and make a real difference! Transported is funded as part of Creative People and Places from Arts Council England, an initiative aimed at increasing the number of people engaging with the arts specifically in areas where engagement is lower than the national average; Boston Borough and South Holland currently form one of these areas and Transported was set up to in order to apply for the funding offered. It launched in May 2013 in Carter’s Park in Holbeach and has since completed a three month initial consultation process in which artists took activities and performances all over the two regions, allowing Transported to ask more than six thousand people who were at those events what arts they would like to see more of as part of the next phase of the programme. Transported also took over two empty shops in Boston and Holbeach in August 2013 programming arts activities throughout the month, and brought Night of Festivals

to Boston in October 2013, working with creator ArtReach. Phase II has eleven different strands of activity, decided through analysing the public feedback received, and will start to be rolled out from the New Year. For more information and how to apply, please visit http://www.transportedart. com/management-group-pack/, or for an informal chat please contact Elaine Knight on 07715 494194.

Police news

The Force in numbers There has been national media attention recently about disclosures that some other police forces may manipulate crime figures...

ner

Jim Tyicing Inspector Pol Community

THE TEAM

I

Sgt Stuart Hurst (estates & rural)

n South Holland, and across Lincolnshire, we accurately record all crimes that are reported to us. There is no manipulation of these figures and we have strict audit systems in place to ensure officers comply with the national crime recording standards. We normally expect seasonal trends of certain crime types compared to previous months, for example the darker evenings usually bring an increase in burglaries compared to the previous month. However if you compare the year-to-date crime figures with the same period last year, there are still less crimes being reported overall.

PC Craig Lockton (estates)

For example, if we look at reports of dwelling burglaries between 1st April & 30th November:

PCSO Natalie Hines (town centre) PCSO Lisa Waterfall (town centre)

PCSO Zara Nacheva (town centre)

The Suttons have had 18 dwelling burglaries. This is the same as this time last year. n The Holbeach and Whaplode beat area has had 40 dwelling burglaries. This is 39 less than this time last year: a 49% reduction. n Crowland & Cowbit has had 7 dwelling burglaries. This is 11 less than this time last year: a 67% reduction n The North Rural beat (Pinchbeck to Donington) has had 40 dwelling burglaries. This is 11 less than this time last year: a 21% reduction n The Moulton and Weston beat has had 8 dwelling burglaries. This is the same as this time last year n The Spalding estates beat has had 35 dwelling burglaries. This is 10 less than this time last year: a 22% reduction n Spalding town centre has had 12 dwelling burglaries. This is 5 less than this time last year: 29% reduction I use burglary as an example, because this is a crime that people are likely to report to us. Across South Holland, there have been 116 dwelling burglaries. That’s 39 less burglary victims than this time last year and a 25% reduction. I often hear that Spalding town centre isn’t a safe place to go out. Actually, since 1st April there have been 98 assaults in Spalding town centre (that’s an average of 3 a week), which is a reduction of 15 crimes compared to the same period last year. The assaults in the town centre tend to be linked to the night-time weekends, so I am pleased with this reduction, as it is the result of a n

lot of work with licensees and door-staff and increased police patrols. However, we are experiencing a rise in assaults on the Spalding Estates beat area: 106 assaults reported to us compared to 85 last year. Many of these assaults tend to be linked to domestic violence. We encourage an increase in reporting of domestic abuse because for far too long those suffering from domestic abuse were often the silent victims. In all other crime types, the Spalding estates are experiencing a reduction in the number of offences reported to us. I am sometimes asked, if we are experiencing such a reduction in crime why do we need more officers and further Special Constable volunteers? Recorded crime may be down, but not everything that is reported to us is a ‘recorded crime’ for the purpose of the national crime recording standards. Some incidents are offences, and offenders are prosecuted, but they are not crimes according to the national guidelines. For example: two of the most consistent themes of correspondence last year were street drinkers and cyclists without lights or cycling on pavements. Readers of your magazine or followers of our Twitter account will already be aware of the significant amount of officer time that is devoted to these two issues. However, although every incident is recorded, neither of these issues is a ‘recorded crime’, so the falling crime figures do not necessarily represent the issues that matter most to our community. In addition to crime incidents, every week my officers deal with traffic incidents, collisions, breath tests, concerns for welfare and suspicious incidents. We regularly have to provide the immediate response to people suffering mental health crises or are vulnerable in other ways. On a daily basis we mediate where neighbours have fallen out. None of these are matters which are recorded as crimes, but still take up a significant amount of our time. So, do the crime figures matter? Yes, they still provide an indication of our performance. The Police and Crime Commissioner has set performance targets for us to achieve a 3% reduction in recorded crime across the county. In South Holland we are currently enjoying a 12% reduction. What is important to me, though, is that this means, across all crime types, in South Holland there are 332 fewer victims than this time last year.

Polish School hosts Sir John Gleed School Staff Two Teaching Assistants from Sir John Gleed School recently visited Elblag in Poland to observe at first hand the teaching of Humanity subjects and English in Polish schools. “We felt this was an excellent opportunity to help us understand how to best support Polish students who have recently joined the school.” said Sharon Caress (pictured right) Sharon and Carmel Bombardini (pictured left) received funding from the Comenius In-service training programme via the British Council to enable them to visit the 11 Lyceum of General Education which has students from 13 – 18. Here they met and observed teachers and students at work, and were honoured guests at a formal lunch with the school’s Headteacher Agnieszka Jurewicz (Centre). Now they have returned to Sir John

Gleed school, they will be presenting assemblies to students on their experiences at the school in Poland and disseminating information to teaching staff to help those who teach EAL students understand the sort of education background that Polish students have had prior to joining the school. Carmel Bomardini said “I found the experience very thought provoking and it has helped me understand some of the issues our Polish students can face when joining a school in the UK.” The links made with the school in Elblag

Monkshouse School Governors, staff and pupils of Monkshouse School are celebrating a successful OFSTED inspection which judged the school good in all four areas; achievement, teaching, behaviour and safety and leadership and management. The inspectors, who were in school on the 7th and 8th November, commented that, ‘Pupils make good progress because teaching is good,’ and, in a quarter of the lessons seen the teaching was judged to be outstanding. The inspector noted that developing reading skills has a high profile in the school and pupils read well as a result. The team also commented on how much the school had improved since the last inspection with, ‘previous weaknesses’ having been ‘eradicated’ by an effective team.

It was reported that parents and carers were full of praise for the school. Pupils stated that they feel safe in school and well-looked because of the connection between staff and pupils. Mrs Sue Goodsell, Headteacher said, ‘We are delighted with this OFSTED report which recognises the sustained improvements the school has made and reflects the hard work and dedication of all members of the Monkshouse community, pupils, staff, governors and parents. As areas for improvement OFSTED recommended that the school ensure that pupils with special educational needs make consistently good progress and that planning for outdoor activities in the Nursery and Reception classes is linked more closely to that for the indoors in order that children can acquire new skills more quickly.

will continue, with students emailing each other and taking part in Skype conferencing. Teachers from the school in Poland are applying for funding to enable them to come to Sir John Gleed School next year to take part in a similar job shadowing project.

Weston St Mary CE Primary School The Autumn term theme for the children’s learning was The Tudors. The children went on a visit to Burghley House, one our local fine tudor houses. The children heard Henry V111 speak to them about his wives and they also learnt about Tudor traditions at Christmas. We had a candle making workshop in school where the children watched and found out about how candles were made in Tudor times. The children very much enjoyed the opportunity they were given to make their own candles with cold wax which they then took home. The whole school was thoroughly entertained by the Working Space Theatre Group performing “The Snow Queen” on Tuesday 3rd December. We have held a few services at Weston St Mary’s Church during December. The Christingle service on Thursday 5th December, our federated Christmas service on Tuesday 10th December and then our end of term Achievement Assembly on the 18th December. We thank you all our parents/grandparents, carers and the wider community for their support.

The pupils, staff and governors of the school hope you had a lovely Christmas and wish you all a Happy New Year.

ST JOHN THE BAPTIST COE PRIMARY SCHOOL Pupils and their families show huge support for local and worldwide charities We are extremely proud of the incredible support offered by pupils and their families during fund raising events towards the latter part of last year. Just look at the fantastic work they did…….. Parents, family members and friends attended our coffee morning as we took part in the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning raising funds for Cancer Research. We had a huge donation of beautiful cakes which we sold to raise funds and people donated

generously for their refreshments as they gathered in our school hall. Children could also purchase cakes during play times, which was a real treat!! We had a lovely morning and raised £280 for this worthy cause. The children have been involved in supporting “Operation Christmas Child”, which sends gifts to disadvantaged children around the world. The gift parcels are made up in decorated shoe boxes and pupils watched a video showing some children receiving the parcels and the joy that these

donations bring to them. Children had a non-uniform day and in return bought into school gifts of small toys, toothbrushes, colouring books and pencils etc. Some children chose to donate money to pay for the distribution cost of the parcels. Through the donations we were able to make up 65 shoe box gift parcels and pay for them to be distributed.

HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM EVERYONE AT ST JOHN THE BAPTIST PRIMARY SCHOOL

Ayscoughfee Hall School The children of Ayscoughfee Hall School have been enjoying lots of activities both in and out of school to enrich their knowledge and enthusiasm for learning. The Year 4 children enjoyed a Viking Day in school where they dressed up in Viking costumes and learnt lots about Viking life, even acting out a battle. Year 5 became Tudors for a day visiting Burghley House to experience a Tudor Christmas. They learnt about Tudor customs in the Great Hall, played

traditional games and dazzled with their dancing in amazing costumes. Year 6, meanwhile, brought their history topic to life learning about Victorian England with a trip to the Galleries of Justice in Nottingham. They re-enacted a case involving 2 convicted children in an actual Victorian courtroom and experienced the harsh conditions in a Victorian jail. The children also enjoyed a busy and exciting build up to the Christmas festivities. The whole school

loved their special Christmas lunch, especially as it was served by the teachers! The school was delighted with recent successes of 3 of its pupils. Peter Cook won a special Key Stage prize in the Independent Schools Association regional art competition and Melissa Wales and Zak Macaulay were both shortlisted in the primary age group of Bookmark’s poetry competition with Melissa then being named as the eventual winner.

Furniture Recycling,

Information & Advice and Day Care Services Our Furniture Recycling unit started on the Fleet Road Industrial Estate in Holbeach in February 2012

F

urniture Recycling is a joint project with Age Uk Spalding District and Age Uk Boston & South Holland. This was a completely new venture for us and was 3 fold in that with the recession people in the area were finding it difficult to purchase good quality furniture at a reasonable price and we realized that a lot of people had furniture they wanted to donate to a good cause; also we needed to find a sustainable service to fund our Information & Advice service. Our Volunteers have increased in numbers and the original ones are still with us and are enjoying the opportunity to work on a project that is really making a difference to older people in the area through helping to fund the Information & Advice Service. Beds, pine goods and G plan bedroom furniture are our best sellers and lots of our customers are returning to pick up more bargains from all departments including chairs, settees, tables, sideboards, pictures and clocks. The list goes on! As at the end of November we have collected 2024 items of furniture since our start and good quality items are still being donated regularly. It’s always worth a look as stock changes very quickly and you never know what is going to turn up. Our Furniture Van is in constant use delivering and collecting four days a week. It is often stopped by members of the public who require our services! We have an overflow store in Gedney Hill for furniture we haven’t room to display and photographs are displayed at the Holbeach unit where they can be brought to if anyone is interested in viewing them. The Unit is open Monday to Friday 9.30 to 3.30 and Saturdays from 9.00 to 1.00pm and the number to ring to speak to Richard is 079 468 371 33 who will be happy to help with any enquiry. Our Information and Advice service is a key service provided by Age Uk and is helping numerous local elderly people. This service is funded by the money raised from the furniture recycling, so by donating furniture you are helping so many people. We have a dedicated Information and Advice adviser called Alison who can be reached on 01775 761951 Alison works with volunteers to fill forms in and make home visits to people not able to travel to the Day Centre. Attendance allowance, benefits advice, pension credit, utility supply advice are just a few of the topics covered by Alison and her volunteers, we have access to all the Age Uk factsheets and lots of local knowledge to help you.

Secrets from the Past by Barbara Taylor Bradford

Lulu Loves the Library by Anna McQuinn and Rosalind Beardshaw

Ever since her massive, worldwide success with a Woman of Substance, Barbara Taylor Bradford has been a hugely popular writer of romantic fiction. Her latest novel Secrets from the Past carries on that tradition and proves to be a real winter warmer of a story. Talented war photographer Serena Stone is asked by her father to take care of Zachary North, her former lover, who has returned broken from a spell in Afghanistan. Together Zachary and Serena discover some surprising secrets about her family past. Expect an emotional rollercoaster to keep you curled up on the sofa as the tale unfolds.

Lulu Loves the Library is a very simple picture book much loved at library storytimes. Its beautifully illustrated pages introduce young readers to Lulu and her Mummy who visit the library every Tuesday. The book explains all about what happens on a library visit and the fun of reading the books together at bedtime. It is a lovely introduction to the pleasure of libraries and reading, recommended for pre-school children from around two years upwards.

Advice

What is a Sale?

E

by John Willoughby

ither just before or straight after Christmas many stores have a sale; it is therefore worth reminding ourselves of our consumer rights of goods bought in a sale When you buy goods in a sale, you have the same rights as if you have bought non-sale goods. However, if the goods were reduced in price because of a fault the trader showed you, or if you’ve just changed your mind, you’re unlikely to be able to ask the trader to put things right. What is a sale? Many traders hold sales where you can buy goods at a discount from their usual price. Sales usually last for a limited time. The goods may be reduced in price because the trader needs to clear stock at the end of the season, because they want to attract customers, or because there are known faults with the goods. Your rights when you buy goods When you buy goods in a sale, you have the same rights as if you have bought non-sale goods. The law says that any item you buy from a trader must be: • of satisfactory quality • fit for purpose • match any description given. If it isn’t, you can usually get one of the following: • a repair • a replacement • your money back (a refund) • some of your money back (a partial refund). You may not have these rights if: • there is nothing wrong with the goods – you have just changed your mind about wanting them • the fault you want to complain about was brought to your attention before you bought the goods • the trader pointed out the defect that you now want to complain about you have damaged the goods yourself • the problem is the result of normal wear and tear • the goods have lasted for as long as could reasonably be expected. If the goods were reduced because of a fault the trader showed you You can’t claim that an item you bought in the sale is faulty if it only has faults you were told about before you bought it. For example, if you buy a coat which has a label saying there’s a hole in it, you can’t complain later about the hole. The same applies if you found a fault and asked for

the price to be reduced because of it. However, if the item has another fault, apart from the one you were told about, you can still complain about it. For example, if you were told about the hole in the coat but the stitching in another part of the coat came apart, you would still be able to return it and ask for a repair, replacement or your money back. If you’ve just changed your mind A trader doesn’t have to give you a repair, replacement or refund if you’ve just changed your mind about goods you bought in a sale. However, some traders have their own returns policies which might offer you an exchange or a credit note if you’ve changed your mind about sale goods. You will often find details of these policies on the back of your receipt or displayed next to the tills. If you’ve changed your mind about goods you bought in a sale, it is worth asking the trader if they will let you return the goods anyway. If the trader says they won’t accept returns on sale items A trader can’t try to limit your rights when you buy goods in a sale. So, for example, if you see a sign saying ‘no returns on sale goods’ or ‘sold as seen’, this shouldn’t mean that you can’t return something which is faulty – unless you’d been told about the fault before buying it. If the sign does mean this, the trader may be committing an offence. You should report them to Trading Standards. If the item’s price has been reduced since you bought it Traders sometimes display signs in sales saying that if you return an item you’ll be refunded the most recent sale price. If you are returning something faulty you bought in a sale and it’s within a reasonable time, you should be refunded the full amount you paid. You may have to show the trader your receipt, or some other proof that you paid the amount you’re asking to be refunded. What does satisfactory quality mean? Goods are of satisfactory quality if they are of a standard a reasonable person would think was satisfactory at the time of sale. This should take into account their price and anything else that seems to be relevant, for example, whether they’re second-hand. You can expect a new item to have a good appearance and finish. If it doesn’t, it’s probably not of satisfactory quality, even if it has no other faults. For example, a new car with scratches or a shop-soiled dress aren’t of satisfactory quality.

Something with minor defects is probably not of satisfactory quality, even if the defects could be repaired. For example, a new shirt with buttons missing isn’t of satisfactory quality, even if you could replace the buttons. A china dish with a small chip also isn’t of satisfactory quality. Something which is unsafe isn’t of satisfactory quality. The Sale of Goods Act 1979 doesn’t say exactly how long goods should last. The general rule is that goods should last for a reasonable time and in reasonable condition. For example, a new car should last for several years in a reasonable condition but you may need to replace some of its parts over time. If goods don’t last as long as they should, they probably weren’t of satisfactory quality when you bought them. For example, if the sole on a shoe comes away after a few weeks of normal wear, this suggests that it was never of satisfactory quality. You may need an expert’s opinion on how long a particular item can normally be expected to last. What is meant by goods not fit for purpose? When you buy something, consumer law says the item must be fit for purpose. For example, a toaster must be able to make toast and a washing machine must be able to wash clothes. As well as being fit for their normal purpose goods must also be fit for any specific purpose that the seller told you they would be fit for. The law which gives you this right is called the Sale of Goods Act 1979. This right only applies when you buy something from a business, not from a private seller. The goods don’t match their description When you buy something, the Sale of Goods Act 1979 says the item must match its description. For example, if a jumper is described on a label as being 100 per cent wool it must be made only of wool. If you realise an item doesn’t match its description when you get it home or you receive it, you may have the right to return it to the seller and ask for a refund.

History

Stepping back in time ❱ BY KATE CHAPMAN

Once upon a time delving into local history involved a trip to the library, church or museum pouring over old, illegible records

H

istorian Michael Elsden’s series of books including Aspects of Spalding is also another great resource for finding out about the history of the town and how its residents lived their lives. But thanks to the digital revolution stepping back in time to find out about our ancestors and the places we live has never been easier. Thousands of documents and photographs - both locally and nationally - are now available to view online. And in recent months a number of new resources have become available in the South Holland area to help residents connect with their pasts. A new website www.southhollandlife.com - is among those created, and is home to numerous photographs, documents and oral histories all relating to life in the district. It has been put together by the team which has successfully restored Spalding’s Chain Bridge Forge and opened it as a museum. Chairman of the Friends of Chain Bridge Forge Geoff Taylor explained that on opening the museum in October 2012 many visitors were keen to share their own wonderful childhood memories. “This coincided with Heritage Lottery Fund starting the All our Stories funding stream, and the forge successfully applied and received a grant,” he said. “This enabled us to create the South Holland Life website to hold photographs, documents and oral histories. “It has resulted in nearly 2,000 items being available

online. We also created a Facebook page of the same name, which daily publishes a photograph depicting our local history. “The community is able to add comments to these pictures which enriches our knowledge. We will always welcome new contributors and contributions.” And South Holland Life is not the only group harnessing the far-reaching powers of Facebook. Several other pages have been set up dedicated to the history and heritage of Spalding and the surrounding area. Another page - A Pictorial History of Spalding – has amassed more than 2,300 ‘likes’. Set up by a lifelong town resident who collects pictures of the area, the page is open to others to upload images too, and features numerous black and white photos of the railway, boats on the River Welland as well as people and other places of interest. Another similar page dedicated to Spalding firm H Leverton & Co is also proving a hit with more than 380 Facebook users clicking ‘like’. The page, set up by Jez Wensor, whose father Arthur worked at the multi-national company in Spalding, aims to preserve the photographic legacy of the staff and the company so that it is never forgotten. It can also be added to other members. So whatever you’re looking for, chances are you’ll now be able to find it at the click of a button.

Farmhouse Breakfast Week 26 January - 1 February 2014 Farmhouse Breakfast Week is back to refresh your breakfast routine!

‘S

hake Up Your Wake Up!’ is this year’s challenge. We are all being encouraged to make small changes to our daily routine to encourage us to take the time to have a healthy breakfast. Farmhouse Breakfast Week first took place in 2000 and it has been going strong for the past 14 years, the campaign reminds people of how important it is to have a healthy breakfast. You’ve probably heard the saying “Breakfast like a King, lunch like a Prince and dine like a Pauper” time and time again, but the nutritionists say it’s true - breakfast is your most essential meal of the day. You’ll feel happier, more alert, and will maintain a healthy weight much more easily. If you think about it, skipping breakfast means your body has to function when it hasn’t been fed since dinner the day before! A car can’t run without fuel and neither can you. So how can you get involved? Well, depending on who you are, there are a range of activities for everyone. Schools, restaurants, farmers markets, retailers, the list goes on and on. If you’re not used to preparing breakfast, or still aren’t sure it’s worth the effort - why not check out the top tips for a healthy breakfast - try it for a week and see how you feel each day? You’ll soon get used to the routine and all its benefits!

Top tips for a healthy breakfast • Incorporate wholegrain foods Wholegrain foods include wholemeal bread, oats and wholegrain cereals. Wholegrain foods can help keep you feeling fuller for longer and studies have shown they may help lower the risk of certain types of cancer, type 2 diabetes and stroke. For more information about wholegrain foods visit www.wholegraingoodness.com

• Combine carbohydrates with protein

Combining a protein with a carbohydrate based

“People often mistake dehydration for hunger so you may overeat if you aren’t getting enough water.”

food such as bread, oats or cereal, provides you with invaluable nutrients for the day ahead. Ideal protein sources include milk, yogurt, nuts and lean meat such as bacon and sausages and fish such as kippers or salmon.

• Start your ‘5-a-day’

Breakfast is an ideal opportunity to start on your recommended ‘5-a-day’ of fruit and vegetables. A glass of fruit juice or a banana, berries or chopped apple with cereal or porridge is a good way to include some fruit. For a healthy dose of vegetable, try baked beans, tinned or fresh tomatoes or mushrooms with your toast

• Stay hydrated

As well as going without food overnight, your body has also gone without liquids, so to avoid dehydration it’s important to top up your levels. Dehydration can result in headaches, tiredness and feeling grumpy. People often mistake dehydration for hunger so you may overeat if you aren’t getting enough water. Start your day with a glass of water, fruit juice or herbal tea. Coffee and tea are also fine but are not as hydrating as other drinks due to their caffeine content.

• Build breakfast into your routine

If you struggle to eat first thing, take your breakfast with you and eat it on-the-go or at work. As long as you eat within the first couple of hours of your day you’ll still get the benefits of breakfast.

New year New YOU

Home is where the heart is ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

After the excesses of Christmas and New Year celebrations it’s time to get back to reality and consider our homes for 2014 by asking some important questions

A

re your finances in good shape and working as hard as they can for you? What can you do at home which will help the environment and your pocket? Are you happy where you are or is it time to upsize or downsize? With property being the largest single purchase that many of us will make, it is worth taking the time to protect that investment. If you don’t already have one, consider a budget planner to ensure your monthly outgoings stay under control. You can have two types of planner, one which covers short term goals, that is making your regular monthly payments and the cost of living, and one which covers long term goals such as debt repayment, savings or a retirement fund. The short term planner needs to take list regular payments such as your mortgage and bills, but also other costs incurred during the month such as food, petrol and entertainment. By keeping track of these as you go along you can ensure that you don’t overspend. For your long term planner you can either allocate a regular amount of money at the beginning of the month to put away or allocate what is left at the end of the month. Either way, having a planner will show you at a glance the money you have and what you need to put away to stay on track. Next, take a look at the environmental impact your home has. There are many ways you can help reduce this impact and at the same time see a reduction in your energy bills. Making sure your loft is properly insulated can save you over £100 a year as well as

“If you have decided a house move is on the cards then 2014 is a great time to get moving”

adding value to your property by improving its Energy Performance rating. Cavity wall insulation offers similar benefits. If you are lucky enough to have a good portion of your roof facing southwards then solar panels could represent a huge saving for you. As well as buying them outright there are a number of schemes enabling you to “rent” your roof space and benefit from free solar energy so you have not outlay. According to www.lovefoodhatewaste.com every year in the UK we throw away 7 tonnes of food. Worse than that, most of it could have been eaten. As well as being environmentally unsound it also costs us a whopping £12bn. On their website and via their app, Love Food Hate Waste is a great resource which not only helps you plan how to buy your food to avoid waste but also gives tasty recipes to use up the food you have left over. What a great way to reduce your grocery bill! If you have decided a house move is on the cards then 2014 is a great time to get moving. House prices have started to recover and demand is high. Interest rates are nice and low and lenders are eager to help. Start by making sure you have done your sums properly to ensure not only that you are looking at properties within your price bracket but also to avoid any problems along the way once you start the mortgage application process. Speaking to an independent mortgage adviser to explore your options before you begin searching for your new house is always a good place to start. Once you have made your initial decisions then it’s time to speak to an estate agent. Speaking to Hayley or Karen at Simply Property on 01775 640622 will ensure your house is on the market promptly and professionally and then your house hunting can begin in earnest. So whether it is keeping a tighter rein on your outgoings, doing something good for the environment or changing the scenery completely there is lots to do property wise in 2014! “...most resolutions will feel like you are somehow being deprived, remind yourself why you are doing what you are doing.”

ew Year’s Resolutions The New Year always starts with Resolutions, it’s as if January 1st brings with it an unavoidable taking stock of the previous year and thoughts of how you can improve over the coming 12 months. Make a list. What you have to do now is to 1) Lo follow it through. Make a start and stick to it. So that’s the s 2) St e weight an Which is often easier said than done… to-do list o d Begin by taking a really close look at the started! 3) D p Smoking get fit r goals you have set for yourself and check 4) Le ink less alc o that they are realistic and obtainable. When a 5) Ea rn someth hol making your resolutions it is easy to think t in 6) Sa more heal g new about how life would be in a perfect world th ve but if that’s what you end up striving for 7) Sta money ily y then you are going to make things very 8) Tra in touch w vel m hard for yourself. If, for example, you ore ith friends 9) B have included ‘learn Mandarin’ on and fa e mily 10) G less stress your list then it makes more sense to ed – w et mo change this to ‘enrol in a Mandarin or re org anised k/life balan class’ which will seem a much less ce daunting task! Equally, ‘lose 3 stone’ would sound more achievable if it read ‘join a local diet group and find an exercise class’. Once you are happy with your list then break it down into smaller goals which can be quickly achieved. If you are able to tick things off your list regularly then you are more likely to stick with it as you will be able to see Ask those around you to help. Many resolutions the results you are getting much more quickly than if involve large changes to lifestyle such as eating less, you tackled them as mammoth tasks. If ‘travel more’ is exercising more and giving up smoking. Knowing that at the top of your list then you could break it down by your family and friends are supporting you can give you firstly researching destinations, then deciding where the encouragement you need when you have been you would like to go, then finding out the cost, then going for a while and need an extra boost. It could be deciding how much you need to save and then booking the holiday. By breaking it down you will feel like you are something simple like asking them not to eat junk food around you, or coming out with you to walk the dog to making steady progress in the areas you have chosen. make sure you are getting some exercise. If taking up a new hobby is on the list then it is also important to get the support from your household as, if you are going to be away, routines will have to change and may even involve you being out in the evenings or weekends. It might be a good idea to choose some resolutions you can all work on together, you are far less likely to give up when you have been going for a while and you feel like you could do with a break. Once you stop you are very unlikely to start again so the more support you have around you the better. Finally, try and enjoy what you are doing! Although most resolutions will feel like you are somehow being deprived, remind yourself why you are doing what you are doing. You ultimately want to be healthier and happier and when you need motivation it a good place to start!

Happiness a So now January is here and the New Year’s Resolutions have kicked in... “If you don’t feel like going it alone then there are many local slimming clubs. In the local area you can find Rosemary Conley Diet and Fitness, Slimming World, Weight Watchers and the Cambridge Diet.”

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

t is fair to say that most of us put “lose a few pounds” and “exercise more” at the top of the list! So what are your options and where is the best place to start? There is the option to begin at home, by making small changes in your diet and beginning an exercise routine which fits around your daily life. By not making huge changes to your routine you are more likely to find any changes easier to stick to. For a start, make sure you eat breakfast every day. Study after study shows that by eating a good breakfast you are far less likely to snack during the day and have more energy than those who skip it. You can then take a look at what you eat and how you eat for your next step. If you drink full fat milk you could switch to semi-skimmed. Semi-skimmed milk not only has less calories and fat than full fat milk but it also contains more calcium, which has shown to be beneficial for weight loss. If you fry a lot of your food then switch to grilling as an easy way to cut the calories. Couple this with some form of exercise – walking the dog, leaving the car at home and walking to the shops instead or investing in a fitness DVD can get you well underway. If you don’t feel like going it alone then there are many local slimming clubs. In the local area you can find Rosemary Conley Diet and Fitness, Slimming World, Weight Watchers and the Cambridge Diet. Many of the local gyms and fitness centres are also offering “drop a dress size” style courses which combine diet

advice with exercise. Use the local business search on the Simply Spalding website, www.simplyspalding.co.uk to find your local diet and fitness classes. And speaking of gyms and fitness centres, if you find that your exercise programme has finished before it started then joining a gym or attending a regular fitness class can be the best way to ensure that you get regular exercise. And if you feel brave enough, classes like Yoga and Pilates can be as good for the mind as they are for the body. The British Heart Foundation have produced a “New Year, Fresh Start” pack which contains information covering areas such as eating well, get active and stay active, stop smoking and look after your heart. And when you consider your appearance there is no need to stop at your clothing. Many people use their Christmas vouchers to give themselves a complete makeover. A brand new hairstyle with changes to colour, length and style and a makeup bag update to include up to date trends are a great way of spending your vouchers and Christmas money, not to mention the confidence boost you will get from all the compliments you will receive making you wish you had done it years ago! Doodles is a pottery painting business based in Spalding run by Anna and Lucy

D

oodles offer a variety of pottery painting parties & events, beautiful personalised gifts and pop in studio painting. The studio opens on Saturday 4th January 2014. Anna and Lucy are childhood friends who grew up cutting, sticking and making fabulous creative messes together. After many years of living in different counties, and sometimes countries, from each other, they’ve both moved back to Spalding where they grew up. They’ve tried many fun things together from epic baking sessions to jumping off the side of a mountain in the Himalayas, but it’s crafty stuff they love best. Doodles is a dream they’ve had for quite a while and now that dream has turned into reality. The business has been mobile since May 2013, visiting summer fetes, schools, clubs, retirement homes, birthday parties and toddler groups. The New Year will see the opening of their very own studio in Spalding based at Unique Cottage Studios, an Arts and Crafts facility located conveniently just off the Spalding bypass, and set in traditional farm buildings with ample parking. The pottery painting studio is open every Saturday and during the school holidays for anyone to pop in and paint. There is no need to book a time, just turn up between 10am and 4pm and create a masterpiece. You can leisurely paint your piece whilst enjoying a coffee and a piece of cake from Unique Cottage Studio’s new coffee shop, and then leave it with them for glazing and firing. Finished pieces can then be collected a week later. Their existing mobile services will still be on offer but now there is the choice between hosting children’s parties and groups at the studio as well as in your home or other venue of your choice. There is a wide range of unfired pottery from mugs, Follow Doodles on facebook for regular updates or see the website for more information on their services. www.doodlecrafts. co.uk www.facebook.com/ doodlecraftsceramics Anna’s mobile 07940 449424 Lucy’s mobile 07907 921108

plates and teapots, through to money boxes, animal figures, picture frames and jewellery. For parties and events, they can tailor packages to suit a theme, age or the ability of the group. Whether it’s a butterfly or dinosaur party for a handful of children, a ladies group decorating tea plates, a team building exercise or a project to involve a whole school, there is something for everyone. Don’t worry if you are not creative. The beauty of pottery painting is that you don’t have to be! Anna and Lucy are bursting with ideas to share with you and there are many examples and hints and tips around the studio. Some of the best items they’ve seen are ones produced using baby foot prints to create a lifetime memento. The popular hand & footprint parties are great fun for babies and toddlers. Groups of friends get together at someone’s house or at a toddler group to use the specialist water based, non-toxic paints that cause no discomfort to your little one. The children play while the adults paint. Alternatively, you can pop into the studio to have a go. Doodles also offers bespoke, hand painted presents and keepsakes. Their celebration plates are perfect gifts for weddings, milestone birthdays & anniversaries, leaving presents, retirements, engagements, hen parties, births, christenings or any other event you wish to celebrate. Your choice of design & wording can be turned into a beautiful and special gift. They also provide a fun and modern alternative to the traditional guest book with their personalised Signature Plates. Family life

Helping their children learn how to read is something that most parents look forwards to when sending their children off to school ❱ BY MELANIE FOSTER, MUNCHKINS KINDERGARTEN But there are lots of pre-reading skills that need to be mastered before children are able to make sense of words. If your child is at a nursery or pre-school they should already be practising some of these skills through fun games and activities that encourage listening to sounds in words, singing rhymes and songs, and making up new rhyming words. You as Parents can play a vital role in helping your child develop these skills by encouraging speaking and listening skills in preparation for learning to read with phonics. Talking, listening, singing, rhythm and rhyme are all important for children’s language development. Start by listening. This will encourage your child to talk and use more and more relevant language. Waiting a little bit for children to reply allows them to think about what has been said, gather their thoughts and frame their replies. Explain to your child that good listening is about keeping quiet, having your ears

40 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

and your eyes ready. Getting your child to distinguish between different types of sounds is also helpful. Environmental sounds are the sounds all around us. Take your child for a walk and talk about the different sounds they can hear. Use simple instruments, such as bells or drums, to introduce your child to instrumental sounds and using body percussion sounds such as stamping feet and clapping hands will help develop rhythm and sound discrimination. Make silly noises with your voice to help them recognise voice sounds, such as buzzing like a bumblebee or hissing like a snake. All these simple, but fun activities will ultimately help your child to identify and match letters to sounds when the time is right, and to then put sounds together to make words.

In a break from tradition I’m not going to mention resolutions...

always seem to make the same ones anyway - to eat less cake and do more exercise and always fail miserably at both! But resolutions aside, there is a new beginning on the horizon for one member of the Chapman household in 2014. Prior to settling down to write this column, I completed the application to register Nancy for her place at primary school. Yes, come this September my little monkey will be packing her bag and heading off to ‘big’ school - all day, every day. Although she could easily pass for a four-year-old already - purely because she’s so tall and chatty - Nancy will be one of the youngest in the year. It doesn’t seem possible that she’s reached this milestone already - and I’m sure all the other parents who’ve been filling in the forms these last few weeks will be nodding their heads along in agreement. Surely it was only five minutes ago that we bought her home from hospital? She was such a tiny little bundle, weighing in at a teeny 5lb 12 ½ oz having arrived two

weeks early. I remember getting home, placing the car seat on the floor and wondering what on earth we were to do with her next. I hate to use clichés, but I’m going to anyway, time really has flown. It’s been truly wonderful watching her grow, both physically and into her own little person. And although it’s with some trepidation that the next chapter dawns, I’m also excited to see her go off and become even more independent. I don’t think I’ve got too much to worry about though, Nancy absolutely loves pre-school and all her new playmates. And she seems quite excited about the prospect of staying all day and taking her ‘lunch pack’ with her. To be honest, come that fateful day in September, I think there’ll only be one person crying at the school gate - and I’m pretty certain it won’t be Nancy.

Ayscoughfee Hall School

O

Giving a Foundation for the Future

verlooking the River Welland, Ayscoughfee Hall School has much to shout about . Catering for pupils from the ages of three to eleven, the school’s latest inspection by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) had this to say: “The quality of the pupils’ overall achievements and of their learning, attitudes and skills is good. The pupils’ achievements are particularly notable in mathematics, science, literacy and music. The school meets its aim that children of all abilities should be well rounded individuals equipped to deal with their future education and lives in the 21st century”. And in July 2013, its Kindergarten was awarded a dark green rating (the highest possible) for the Annual Foundation Stage Audit carried out by the Lincolnshire Birth to Five Service. Add to this the recent success in Year 6, who gained a 100% pass rate in the 11+, and it is clear to see how this small school is making a big impact on its pupils. Headteacher Clare Ogden says “Opportunities and successes are something every child should have. We aim to ensure that all children at Ayscoughfee feel valued and able to experience an excellent education”. This is achieved in the following ways: Firstly there are the class sizes. With a maximum of 20 children to a class this gives students a higher individual contact time with staff so strengths and areas for improvement can be quickly identified. The curriculum, overseen by subject co-ordinators, is broad and varied and is supported by regular external visits to enhance

“There’s a real family feel here at the school and it’s nice to know that should I need to, the teachers and Mrs Ogden are always available to me.”

and consolidate the learning experience. Development is tracked throughout the school and comprehensive learning journeys ensure that parents are always up to date with their child’s progress. Then there is the specialist teaching provision, with music, ICT, languages and sport all benefitting from having their own dedicated staff. There are also many after school clubs which take further advantage of these. But most of all, children are treated as individuals in an environment which encourages traditional values whilst using modern teaching techniques to get the best out of each pupil. Achievements both at home and within school are celebrated and strongly encouraged, and not just from an academic point of view – success in sports, competitions and hobbies is also recognised. The school also has a lively social scene, with the PTFA organising a wide variety of events for children and parents throughout the school year. Parent Jennie Bell, who has three children at Ayscoughfee with a fourth due to start in a couple of years, knows the school back to front, having experience of every class. She says “There’s a real family feel here at the school and it’s nice to know that should I need to, the teachers and Mrs Ogden are always available to me. It’s great to see how they grow and develop as they go up through the school and how the little ones look up to the older ones and how they in turn look after them.” Whether you are looking for somewhere to start your children or are looking to move schools (or are perhaps new to the area) then please do get in touch. Please remember that due to the small class sizes each year fills up fast so give us a call sooner rather than later. Whilst the above gives a good idea about what the school has to offer, to really get a feel for the school the best thing to do is come and experience it for yourself. The Year of the Horse Which animal are you in the Chinese zodiac?

F

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

Chinese New Year is celebrated not only in China, but in countries and territories around the world with large Chinese populations such as Singapore, Thailand, Mauritius and the Phillipines. Where there are smaller Chinese populations you will find Chinese New Year celebrated in Chinatowns. It’s a huge holiday with an estimated 1 in 6 of the world’s population observing it. Unlike the West, which follows the Gregorian calendar, the Chinese use a lunisolar calendar which determines the date of the New Year according to when there is a new moon, which is why the date changes each year but as a rough guide it occurs between the 21st January and the 20th February. In 2014, Chinese New Year falls on the 31st January. The evening before Chinese New Year’s Day is traditionally the time when families get together and celebrate with an annual reunion dinner. Beforehand, the house will have been cleaned from top to bottom to not only sweep away any bad luck but to make space for some new good luck! Windows and doors are decorated with hanging banners and lanterns and there is often a theme which centres around good fortune, wealth, happiness and long life. A lantern festival may be held, the highlight being the dragon dance, where a silk dragon, held aloft by young men, dances and weaves its way through the streets. During the festivities the lighting of firecrackers will often take place as well as the giving of gifts – this is in the form of money in red envelopes.

In Chinese mythology red symbolises good luck and is also used to ward off evil spirits. People will sometimes wear red for the same reasons. The envelopes are traditionally given by couples to single people and children. But giving money is a complicated business, for a start the amount of money must end in an even digit (odd numbers are given at weddings and funerals) and while the number must be even it must not be a four as it is considered to be very bad luck. Brand new notes are often put into the envelopes to make it harder to guess the amount inside, and you must wait until your relatives have gone before you open your envelope, out of courtesy. Each Chinese year has an association with an animal from the Chinese zodiac. There are many different versions of the story of how this came about, all similar but with different characters and circumstances. For the purposes of this article we will use the most loved legend which tells that the mythical Jade Emperor was given the task of selecting animals for the zodiac. He asked his favourite animal, the rat, to help him decide and so the rat arranged a race across a river. Each animal used its own resourcefulness to cross the river (with some stopping along the way and others working together) and the order in which they finished is the order in which they appear in the zodiac. As an aside, the cat was invited to the race but his hatred of water is well known and so he was unable to finish. And to this day cats and rats remain mortal enemies… It is said that people share the traits of the animal in which year they were born.

The animals along with the corresponding years. Rat – 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996 and 2008

Horse – 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002 and 2014

Getting Away in

2014

❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN

We take a look at your options for travel over the next year

S

“You should always try and go through a travel agent who is retail independent, that way they have no financial ties with operators and so can give you impartial advice”

ince the beginning of the financial crisis, more people have been choosing domestic holidays, also known as “staycations” over overseas trips. The annual holiday used to mean a journey on a plane to somewhere hot with either very little to do or lots to see. Now there are a wider variety of choices as people are increasingly opting to stay within the UK and visit areas they have never seen. So what are the options for a staycation and what are the top foreign destinations for the coming year? Destinations in the UK are varied – from romantic weekends to city breaks and all out family adventure holidays there is something for everyone. Some people pack up the car and head to a self- catering cottage, others prefer camping or caravanning whilst others prefer to be in a hotel or bed and breakfast. How much you organise yourself depends on how confident you are of the accommodation in the area you are visiting as well as how much of an idea you have of what you want to do while you are there. One of the easiest ways to see the country is by coach. Day trip spending accounted for 44% of all tourism expenditure in the UK last year. But even if it is a longer trip you are after a coach may still be the answer. The Coach Tourism Council (CTC) gives plenty of reasons for travelling by coach. Firstly, they say, a trip is all inclusive so you don’t have to worry about spending on the extras. It will always represent good

48 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

value for money, especially with fuel prices being as high as they are, it is not cheap to travel in your car around the country. Travelling in numbers also makes your trip environmentally friendly. Aside from that there is the personal service you receive from your driver and tour reps and then there is the comfort aspect. You can sit back and relax knowing that everything is taken care of and that you don’t have to do your share of the driving or the navigating to find places of interest! If you want to find out more about coach trips in the UK then visit www.findacoachholiday. com for more information. If you are thinking about travelling abroad then unless you are really familiar with the area you are travelling to it is a good idea to use a travel agent. For a start they are a one stop shop. Rather than trawling the internet to find out about potential destinations, a travel agent will have all of the information under one roof. If you are using an agent who is registered with ABTA (the Association of British Travel Agents) then you are covered in the event that something goes wrong, either with your holiday or with the agent themselves. A travel agent will also be able to help with excursions and itineraries if you want to see the sights while on holiday meaning you can head off on your holiday with everything sorted rather than having to do these things on arrival. Zane Ground, branch manager of Boston Travel says “You should always try and go through a travel agent who is retail independent, that way they have no financial ties with operators and so can give you impartial advice” and using established companies such as the co-op mean you can put your trust in them as not only are they well established but they are a member of ABTA and only use ATOL protected operators so your money could not be safer. And Zane’s top destination pick for 2014? “If you’re looking at the Med, then it’s got to be Turkey. The top city break has got to be New York and for an all-out holiday we are taking lots of bookings for China at the moment so that looks like the place to be”.

e have been at the cattery in Donington for the past 10 years, and in that time have made several changes, with our major project been undertaken at the moment the grounds are being completely redone by the expert Steve Minns who owns Lincs and Cambs hard landscaping, who is having to deal with the cattery still running, and the help (not) of our 3 dogs, however, aided by an on going supply of coffee. He has also renewed all the fencing around the area making the whole property very secure and safe. The cattery is licenced for 40 cats by South Holland District Council and future client inspection is always encouraged. All cats have their own inside sleeping and eating area with indivual access via a cat flap into the outside run where they can sit on the chairs provided. Cats from the same family can share a pen if they are happy to do so, or can have their own pen.

“All cats have their own inside sleeping and eating area with indivual access via a cat flap into the outside run where they can sit on the chairs...”

They have wet food twice daily and a good quality dry food and fresh water constantly any diet can be provided, unless it’s a prescription diet from your veterinary surgeon any medication can be given as needed but most important love and cuddles are in constant supply. All cats should be vaccinated up to date and wormed before arrival, they can bring anything, toys beds that will make them feel at home. The area around the cat pens is also being revamped with the outside pens being retiled and the outside area being done to encourage wildlife around so the cats will have something to watch.

Home & property

To move or improve? ❱ BY KATE CHAPMAN

F

January and the advent of a brand new year is always the ideal time to take stock of various aspects of our lives

or many of us our living accommodation is often top of the list. If you’re starting to feel that you’ve outgrown your home and there simply isn’t enough room, the new year could be the ideal time to consider taking the next step on the property ladder. Whether it’s more living space, a bigger garden, or you simply want a change of location, moving isn’t a decision that should be entered into lightly. After all it can be a costly business, with conveyancing and estate agency fees to pay along with stamp duty tax as well as house contents removal costs. You’ve also got to find a buyer for your own property – one who will pay a high enough price that enables you to move on. Perhaps improving your home rather than selling up could be the way to go – it’s certainly cheaper to make new space rather than buy it. There are lots of ways to go about improving your property so that it meets the needs of your growing family and their demands. You could also consider redecorating – using light colours on your walls will open up your rooms, or alternatively you could replace and update your kitchen and bathroom.

THE FOLLOWING ARE GREAT WAYS OF CREATING MORE SPACE • Loft Conversion A loft is often the largest untapped space in the home. Converting it is a simple way of creating a new room, which could be used as an extra bedroom, office or playroom. It will add value you to your property too, should you decide to sell up in the future. • Extension Extending your property is another way of increasing your living space. You could add a one or two-storey extension depending on your requirements. This option will not only be cheaper than moving it will also add value to your property and leave you feeling like

you’re living in a new home. • Folding doors Another way of increasing space or the feel of your rooms is by replacing walls with folding doors, which will open rooms up and make them appear larger. • Conservatory You could create another room / more living space by the addition of a conservatory. There’s no need to get planning permission and one of the real advantages of a conservatory over any other type of extension is that they let in light and warmth, while at the same time providing shelter from the elements. A conservatory will also add value to your home.

A welcoming and inclusive worshipping community ❱ BY KATE CHAPMAN

An exciting redevelopment project at Spalding’s Broad Street Methodist Church is set to secure the future of the building for many generations to come

T

he church is a fine example of a Victorian Wesleyan Methodist Chapel and was officially opened back in March 1887, after being rebuilt on the site of former Methodist Chapel and gaol. Today the impressive building is Grade II listed, and is home to a vibrant, welcoming congregation. Very much at the heart of the community, the building is used by a variety of different groups including SPACE4U counselling service, Vitality for the Over 60s and the Gateway Club and hosts many events throughout the year. To help ensure the future of the building for all those who rely on it, an exciting project called Vision21 has been launched to renovate and improve it. “Our vision is of a welcoming and inclusive worshipping community, which serves the wider community and especially those in greatest need. “The building project is part of how this vision can be realised,” said David Baldwin, chairman of the steering group. “The Vision21 project developed out of the identified need and demand to complete urgent building repairs with substantial renovation and improvement. “As well as safeguarding the site’s heritage it is our desire to encourage the wider community to take advantage of the excellent fellowship and activities on

offer at Broad Street Methodist Church,” he added. It is estimated that the building works will cost at least £750,000. Plans to create a new foyer area joining the church with the hall have already been approved. This will create a shared access for all users as well as a new church lounge at the back of the building, including refreshment and toilet facilities. Most pews will be replaced with chairs to enable a more flexible use of the worship area and a new reception and office area, improved storage facilities, brighter corridors, improved lighting, efficient heating and substantial roof repairs are also part of the project. During the last few weeks high level work on the roof and stonework has been completed and an application to the English Heritage Lottery Fund for grant aid towards the repairs of the roof and brickwork has been successful too. “£68,000 has been awarded for high level work on the roof, stonework and making safe the rainwater disposal,” said David. “The intention is to complete the work phase by phase as grants and other money becomes available.

“We already have provisional funding in excess of £330,000, including £80,000 gifts and pledges from our members. We hope others share our vision and can make a contribution too.”

There are over 250 academic and vocational courses from entry to university level available between the college’s two campuses, including NVQs and diplomas as well as courses lasting just a few weeks for people keen to learn something new. The new-look Red Lion Quarter boasts a central IT suite, hair and beauty training salon, coffee shop and student common room. Many of the college’s fantastic resources - such as established links with local employers and teachers with industry experience – are readily available too. So, anyone wanting to train to be hairdresser, chef or a mechanic, can learn in real salons, real restaurants and real workshops. Since the site was taken over in 2012, many changes have been made with a variety of new courses added to the excellent array already available. Last April a training salon - Style Academy Spalding – was officially opened too. Designed and equipped with all modern requirements of a professional hair and

beauty salon, it’s based in what was previously the food court and provides opportunities for adults and school leavers to train and up-skill on their doorstep. The salon also offers evening and daytime classes for those looking to learn a new skill such as nail art, hair put-ups and skin care. Sage coffee shop opened last summer, and offers freshly brewed coffee, homemade cakes and pastries, while a new light lunch menu, including Jacket potatoes and soups is being launched in the New Year. Open 10am to 2.30pm Monday to Friday and 10am to 3.30pm on Saturdays, the coffee shop has free Wi-Fi available to the public, college learners and businesses. The venue is also used by several community groups and is keen to welcome more to use its amenities. Five businesses occupy eight rooms on the top floor of the building, covering a diverse range of activities from the importation of vegetables and meat to online sales of electrical equipment, All three retail units on the ground floor are occupied too - by a flooring company, a lettings agency and a social enterprise. ➤ As from the start of 2014, the college will be starting new community courses including bakery and barista. ➤ While from Wednesday January 15, the Spalding campus is also offering a five-week Downton Abbey experience, where fans of the show will be able to learn how to cook the food enjoyed by Lord Grantham and his family. The course is priced £57.50 and includes fees and materials. ➤ The college’s next open event in Spalding is on Tuesday February 11, 2014 from 5pm to 7pm.

Mitsubishi L200 2.5 Double Cab Barbarian auto

Y

IT TRIGGERS traffic turmoil, shuts schools and closes down factories. But, conversely, the Artic weather that goes with the UK’s winter tends to set the cash registers ringing in dealership

ou see, many motorists, especially those who need to keep businesses running, will now be eying up 4x4s for their ice and snow beating skills. Mitsubishi’s L200 Double Cab is one to definitely test drive – especially if an indestructible workhorse is what you need. In Barbarian guise the L200 Double Cab is practical, comfortable and, with all-wheel-drive ability, it will get you on and off mud-ridden building sites or farm fields with absolute ease. Not only that, the pick-up does what it says on the tin – it will be your best buddy when it comes to collecting loads and, when the cargo area is full, it is the perfect vehicle for dragging a weighed down trailer around. The L200’s looks are not bad either. It is mean and handsome – in a coarse sort of way. The double cab means there is enough room for four-up, so when the Barbarian is not engaged with off road activities or hauling heavy-duty merchandise around, it is a usable main motor, especially kitted out with a luscious leather interior and an automatic transmission. Rapidity, although it is not the first thing you think

“...the Mitsubishi picks up pace like an angry rhino – even with its easy going, but rather old fashioned, five speed auto gearbox” 64 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

about when you buy a pick-up, is not an issue on the L200. There is a reason for this: the Japanese-made vehicle has 173 horses under its bonnet and enough pulling power to yank a tree stump out of the ground (well, probably!). The result is that the Mitsubishi picks up pace like an angry rhino – even with its easy going, but rather old fashioned, five speed auto gearbox. And when it gets to its limit it is a raging road-train. Good job, then, that the Barbarian has first class brakes to scrub off any excessive get-up-and-go. The mighty Mitsubishi is classed as a commercial vehicle – so it is an affordable alternative for outdoorsy business types who demand resilience, versatility and performance. It will also work as the family car – so it is a win win situation – especially if you need a motor with grip when the white stuff comes down.
