What’s On
Here we are at the beginning of Summer and all the anticipation for what the weather will be like is building up. May is always an exciting month locally, we have all the flower festivals at the churches as well as the two bank holidays, book-ending the month. This year is going to feel different for many local residents as we won’t be having the usual flower parade at the first weekend of May. Whether you were an avid visitor each year or travelled away to avoid the crowds this May bank holiday will be like no other for many residents who have grown up with the flower festival taking over the first bank holiday in May. In this issue we are trying to inspire you to pack up the car and go camping! See our guide on page 39. With sun comes BBQ’s and the 26th of May sees a week long celebration of charcoal and meat…find out more on page 36. Have you been wondering how we are getting on with the new business Simply Property? There’s been a few late nights, but that’s all the fun of being a 24/7 estate agent, find out more about Simply Property on pages 28 and 29. You may remember last month that I told you about my wedding plans? This month my focus has been on boxes, yes boxes as we have moved house. They say moving house, organising weddings and setting up a business can be some of the most stressful things to do in life and I am packing all three into 12 months, roll on June and my holiday! Our new home needs a few projects and I am pleased to be supporting local tradesmen with the work, I will keep you updated on my progress. To keep updated with advice, recipes and what’s on locally visit www.simplyspalding.co.uk. There’s even a for sale section, so you may pick up a bargain too! If you would like to get in touch then please email editor@simplyspalding.co.uk or call me on 0845 676 9295; we always appreciate your feedback and questions.

Boston & Spalding slimmers celebrate 23 groups of big-hearted slimmers from Boston & Spalding are celebrating losing a huge amount of weight between them and raising money as part of a sponsored slim for various local causes Members of these Slimming World groups have taken part in a national campaign called Slim for Good running across all 11,000 Slimming World groups in the UK and Ireland. The aim of the six week drive, which kicked off on February 24th, was to help people to lose weight and improve their health while raising money for a good cause in their local area. “Supporting a worthwhile cause has given everyone a special focus and real commitment to their weightloss goals. For many members being sponsored has been a great way to kick start their weight loss and for others it’s been a boost to help them stay on track. At Slimming World we pride ourselves on the care and support we give each other to lose weight – we’re known as the club with the big heart – so when members started talking about raising money for local community causes and what we could all do together, there really was no stopping us. I’m so proud of what the members in the groups have achieved during the last six weeks.” Anyone wanting to join any of the local groups are welcome to come along or they can call Jenny on 01205 310173 for more information.
HOLEACH ROTARY CLUB visit Shree School – Bharatpur – NEPAL
The Shree School is a very poor unit with 140 hearing and 14 deaf children attending. The dedicated headmistress (Mrs Dallakoti) has a passionate objective to make this school a shining beacon of excellence for the education of deaf children not only in Bharatpur but for the whole of Nepal. A deaf Nepalese child is deemed useless, only fit for exploitation on the land. Mrs Dallakoti and her committed team of 14 teachers have a dream to be able to accommodate a further 50 deaf children with dormitory facilities, to teach sign language and give a fundamental understanding of reading and writing, empowering these students to face a more enhanced future. It must be understood that although the school own the land and buildings (administered through a trust committee) the Government have no interest other than to pay the teachers wages. Holbeach Rotary Club is the lead club in this venture along with 8/10 other clubs in District 1070, all committed to raise £1000 each. If a collected effort can reach up to £10,000, they can (if all criteria are met) apply for a Rotary international Global Grant, turning £10,000 into £35,000. As a club they have been communicating with various people and agencies in Nepal for about a year but with little effect, it was time to grab the bull by the horns, Collin Scott (current club President) and David Dye, (club member) decided the only way forward was to go and visit the school to get a first-hand
knowledge of exactly what was required, was this a feasible project or not? We arrived in Khatmandu on 2nd March and flew down to Bharatpur the next day, to be warmly welcomed and whisked through check in via the V.I.P. lounge by a very friendly bunch from RC. Bharatpur, along with two guests from the Nepal Trust (they would be the experts who would project manage the development should it go ahead) We spent the next 4 incredible and exhausting days in various meetings with, the Nepal Trust – School staff – site engineers – Bharatpur and regional RC officials, all of whom were exceptionally enthusiastic and helpful. After the trip David commented, “It was evident many hurdles need addressing before we can qualify for global grant status and a list of needs” has been left with the Bharatpur RC in collaboration with the Nepal Trust i.e., secure perimeter fencing (an absolute must in terms of safety and security), upgrading of school building (pupils live too far to travel so need accommodation), sanitation needs (practically none existent), roofing and shutter repairs, equipment. Until we have sight of plans, quotes, costing’s and professional assessments we can go no further. Colin and I believe this to be a very worthwhile project, however until all of the above is to hand we cannot fully commit, hopefully the required information will be with us soon.”

Commemorative Olympic torch mosaics throughout South Holland Have you spotted the London Olympics mosaics in five towns and villages across South Holland? The artwork commemorates the torch passing through the district in the run-up to the Olympic Games in 2012. South Holland District Council arts development commissioned local artist Fiona Gurney to work with teaching staff and art and design students from University Academy Holbeach to design and make the five mosaics. Fiona ran workshops across the district enabling whole communities to help make them. Each mosaic includes the recurring themes of Olympic ring colours and coloured lines to reflect the London Underground map. They all have a splash of red, orange and gold to represent the Olympic flame and each mosaic features a different sport, and includes a geographical outline of the area and a representation of something specific to that area. Spalding’s mosaic in Sheepmarket depicts tulips, Moulton’s windmill is on the artwork in front of the community centre in Broad Lane, Whaplode’s is by St Mary’s Church entrance and has representations of the village’s sculptures, ploughed fields are on the Holbeach mosaic in Church Street and Long Sutton’s version - at the junction of Wisbech Road and Bridge Road - features the church’s famous spire. Cllr Nick Worth, portfolio holder for community, said: “The mosaics look fantastic and will serve as a reminder of the great day we had in 2012 as thousands of people enjoyed seeing the flame
pass through our district. “Fiona and the students of University Academy Holbeach with whom she worked did a great job and it’s lovely to now see all five mosaics in place.”

Notes
If you would like to contact Nick with a specific question, please email info@simplyspalding.co.uk
It is with some sadness that I write this following the closure of the Simply Holbeach magazine for which I have written monthly ‘notes’ since the first issue in March 2009. I will continue to write my notes for Simply Spalding, but on a District wide basis and hope you will continue to find it a useful source of information about what is going on in the District. This first article though is unashamedly about Holbeach and focuses in on their first ever Food Festival. The Holbeach Food Festival will be held on Saturday, June 14th from 10am – 4pm, in the beautiful surroundings of William Stukeley School and surrounding Stukeley Gardens, just off Spalding Road in Holbeach. This is a free family event for all to enjoy. The date is quite deliberately tied in to the same weekend as the renowned Vintage Tractor Rally which is held on the outskirts of the town on the same weekend. The theme of food and farming flows nicely with a clear link between the two events. The evening of the Food Festival will be rounded off with a Jazz Festival at the

Roman Catholic Church off Fleet Road, which will be a ticket only event. The Food Festival will be concentrating on locally produced food and will have an exciting cultural element to it, but all with a food theme. Heading up the cultural element will be nationally recognised ‘Black Country Touring’ who in co-production with the Birmingham rep will present “Eat!” which
involves four specially converted caravans......! An unbelievable performance worth coming for on its own. Their website for those who want to get a taste (sorry for the pun!) can be found at: www.bctouring. co.uk There will be a variety of food stalls, all of which will be showing different foods including meats, fish, salads, cheeses, preserves, chocolates and ice-cream along with a micro- brewery to help wash it all down! For the first time there will be cooking demonstrations on making and cooking pizzas by top Bakkavor chefs in a pizza oven bought along for the purpose, intermingled with some healthy cooking by Cook Connect. The Food Festival is being run by the local community with considerable help from William Stukeley Primary School for whom I am most grateful. Please do put it in your diaries and make that short trip to sunny Holbeach and don’t forget to go and see the Vintage Tractor Rally while you are in town. More information will be revealed in the local papers nearer to the time.

School news
Calling teachers, PTA members, pupils… Do you have exciting news at your school? If you would like to share your school news with the local residents please send details to editor@simplyspalding.co.uk
Ayscoughfee Hall School It was an exciting second half of the spring term for the children of Ayscoughfee Hall School. The Year 2 children enjoyed a great day in London as part of their study of the plague and the Great Fire of London. They spent time looking round the Museum of London and visited St Paul’s Cathedral, The Monument, Pudding lane as well as walking along the banks of the River Thames. Children from the Art, Textiles and Creative Writing after school clubs visited Lincoln Cathedral to present work they had done as part of the county wide “Memories and Memorials” project. They were welcomed by the Dean’s Verger and representatives from the County Council who were delighted with the textile poppy picture, the mosaic display and the writing that the children had done. After eating lunch in the Chapter House, they were treated to a guided tour of the cathedral. The Lincolnshire schools displays for the project will be exhibited in the cathedral between 15th and 29th June. Year 6 had a very interesting day visiting both the mosque and cathedral in Peterborough as part of their religious education studies. They also had a very informative visit to John Clare cottage at Helpston. Here, they were taught by a local poet to think creatively and write their own poems. This linked with
the national Shakespeare week. The Kindergarten children were thrilled by the visit of Sooty and Sweep, two new born lambs. They also had great fun producing their wonderful sheep paintings. The whole school got involved in Sports Relief and completed their sporty mile, comprising 9 laps of the school, dressed in sports gear or as their favourite sporting hero. As a result, they raised £177 for Sports Relief. The school also hosted their annual cross country event for other independent schools which produced great competition in awful weather conditions. Determination saw Jessie Avery take first place and Calypso Priestley third place in the girls’ race. The school also competed in the Spalding schools hockey tournament and both teams were unbeaten in their 9 games. On the music front, the school choir and band, joined by the Spalding Ukulele Orchestra entertained around 50 people at the Inner Wheel Concert for the Caring. They put on a great performance which was greatly appreciated by the audience. The choir and band are now preparing for their “Musical Memories” concert on 20th May when they will be performing a range of songs from both first and second world wars and “Old Time Musical” favourites for the elderly in the community.
Weston Hills CofE Primary Year 5/6 took part in a Volleyball tournament organised by Agilitas, and had a great day – they really enjoyed the competition against other local schools. They will also be attending a Y5/6 Cricket tournament at the Grammar School in May. Our Year 3&4 children will be attending a Tennis Tournament at Spalding High School. Good luck to them all! We attended a Dance Showcase at the South Holland Centre – the children performed two routines and were a credit to the school - this is always a very enjoyable event. We took part in Sport Relief in March raising money for this worthy cause. Children in Class 5 attended “Easter Cracked” at the Baptist Church in Spalding. They took part in a quiz, made Easter Cards, listened to the Easter Story and had an Egg Hunt. Another lovely morning! Class 2 will be organising their Collective Worship for the beginning of April – these are always well attended by parents/carers, and will centre around their topic work for the term. Tempest will be coming into school in Term 5 to take class photographs, and May also sees Key Stage 2 SAT’s taking place. The PTA have again been very busy organising a Bag2School event, Mothers Day Wrap (where children purchased gifts for mum/granny, etc.), as well as School Discos. They have also organised a “Loose Change Challenge” - giant Coca Cola bottles are in each class, and children are bringing in any loose change and are filling them up – this fundraiser will run until the beginning of July! 16 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING
Monkshouse School Nursery We have been very busy with lots of special days recently. We started with an outing to Frankie and Benny’s. For lots of us it was our first time on a coach so that was very exciting. Then when we got to the restaurant we were able to make our own pizzas and best of all when they were cooked we could eat them. We also had a Bedtime Story day. We all came to school in our pyjamas and brought our favourite book and teddies along too. We had each made our own book based on the rhyme, 10 in the bed, and our grown-ups came to share them with us. Some of them wore their pyjamas as well! Finally we had another dressing up day and this time we were all pirates. We made treasure maps and telescopes and we followed the clues to find the treasure. Some of the bookstart team also came to join us and they read some pirate stories and taught us some new songs. Bookstart bear also came, he was very big and cuddly. At the end of the day we all took our bookstart treasure bags home to enjoy the books with our families.

Advice
The Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme by Lisa Barwell
A scheme allowing police to inform individuals if their partner has a history of domestic violence has been introduced across England and Wales he Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme, also known as ‘Clare’s law’, is named after Clare Wood who was killed by her partner in 2009. Under the scheme, anyone who is concerned that they or someone they know could be the victim of domestic violence can ask the police about a person’s previous history of domestic violence. The scheme also allows the police to warn an individual at risk of domestic violence. The police can disclose information where it is necessary to protect potential victims from domestic violence.
Domestic Violence Protection Notices and Orders The police can issue a Domestic Violence Protection Notice and then apply to the magistrates’ court for a Domestic Violence Protection Order to protect a victim from domestic violence. Domestic Violence Protection Notices and Orders immediately protect a victim of domestic violence from further violence or abuse. The perpetrator can also be banned from returning to the home and having contact with the victim for up to 28 days. This gives the victim time to explore the options available to them. If a Domestic Violence Protection Order is breached, the perpetrator can be arrested and brought before the court.
What is domestic violence and abuse Domestic violence is where one person
harms another person with whom they have (or have had) some sort of relationship. They do not need to be heterosexual partners and they do not need to live in the same property. Both women and men can experience domestic violence. Domestic violence can be where one person physically attacks the other or it may be another form of abuse such as emotional, sexual or financial abuse. Domestic violence is a particular type of abuse, but there are also many other different types including harassment and stalking, rape and sexual assault, female genital mutilation, forced marriage, honourbased abuse and trafficking. All such abuse is also known as gender violence. If you need help to recognise whether you are being abused, there are many organisations that can give you confidential advice.
Finding somewhere safe to stay If you are a victim of a violent relationship you may need somewhere safe to stay, either alone or with your children. The options are: • stay at home if you think this is safe • stay with relatives or friends • stay in a women’s refuge. This is only an option for women (with or without children) • get emergency accommodation from the local authority under homeless persons law - this will usually mean a bed and breakfast hostel • get privately rented accommodation.
Women’s Aid Refuges Women’s Aid Refuges are safe houses run by and for women suffering domestic violence. Refuges provide somewhere safe for women and their children to stay and allow some time and space for the woman to think about what to do next. Staff at refuges are specialised in dealing with domestic violence, and so can give a lot of emotional and practical support, for example, advice on benefit claims, which solicitors to use and, if necessary, how to contact the police. To find out your nearest refuge with spaces available, you should contact the National Domestic Violence Helpline, Helpline staff will do their best to find you somewhere safe to stay that night even if the local refuge is full. They are also happy to talk to women about any questions they have about refuges.

The Shopkeeper’s Daughter by Lily Baxter
The Child’s Elephant by Rachel Campbell-Johnston
Family saga books have long been popular with library customers and Lily Baxter’s The Shopkeeper’s Daughter carries on that long tradition. It is 1944 and Ginnie Travis is working in her father’s furniture store in East London when bombing raids worsen and she is sent with her sister Shirley to stay with an aunt in Shropshire. There Ginnie embarks on a doomed love affair and eventually has to fight her hardest to save all she holds near and dear. Lily Baxter has written a number of books set in World War II and all of them have feisty women leading characters. This is a book to enjoy and remember.
Voting in the Lincolnshire Young People’s Book Awards carries on this month with a short list of 10 exciting and enthralling titles in the 9 to 11year and 12 to 14 year categories. The Child’s Elephant is one of the chosen books in the 12-14 year category making it suitable for young teenagers. When a baby elephant is orphaned on the African savannah, Bat a young herdsboy takes her home and cares for her. His family realise she cannot stay with them as the call of the wild will always be strong but they cannot realise what an important role she will play in Bat’s life. This is a grown up story of life in a dangerous region. If you wish to read the shortlisted books and vote for your favourite, ask at the library or go to the library website www.lincolnshire.gov.uk/libraries

Festival of Learning
2014 Festival of Learning ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
T
The 2014 Festival of Learning invites individuals, families, communities and workplaces to celebrate and take part in learning
here are many opportunities for you to discover something new and celebrate the transformational power of learning. Thousands of organisations will be holding events demonstrating the learning opportunities that they provide, attracting new learners and inspiring adults to discover how learning can transform lives. Throughout May and June, in the run up to Adult Learners’ Week, events will be taking place both locally and nationally to inspire you to try something new. We detail some of these below.
than 80,000 young people attended to be inspired by opportunities available to them in further education, skills and Apprenticeships. The Edge Foundation is a premier sponsor alongside City & Guilds and Premier Colleges.
Museums at Night VQ (Vocational Qualifications) Day VQ Day celebrates vocational achievement and the benefits of practical, technical and vocational learning, This year, VQ Day is 4th June. Funding available for schools, colleges and learning providers to help celebrate vocational learning. The Edge Foundation is joining forces with The Skills Show to help students understand more about vocational qualifications and get the edge for their future careers. Education providers will be holding ‘Have a Go’ activities. These will be hands-on ‘bite-size’ tasters of a skill which give an introduction to possible careers that students might not have previously considered. Schools, colleges and learning providers will be holding events on and around VQ Day. There will also be the opportunity to take part in The Skills Show local programme, also taking place across the UK. Jan Hodges, CEO of the Edge Foundation: “VQ Day is about celebrating learning by doing and there is no better way to see this in practice than within the colleges, schools and learning providers that champion it”. The Skills Show inspires young people about vocational education, skills and careers through a series of interactive events. The main event takes place at Birmingham’s NEC from 13th-15th November and last year more 22 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING
Learning at Work Week 19th-25th May 2014 Learning at Work Week is an annual awareness campaign organised by the Campaign for Learning since 1999. It aims to put the spotlight on the importance and benefits of learning and development. Each year, thousands of organisations take part in the Week and run vibrant campaigns and activities which engage employees across their businesses in development and promote positive messages about learning. Many companies use the Week as a catalyst for change providing an opportunity to ‘rebrand’ or refresh learning and development, reinforcing the organisation’s commitment to staff development and celebrating learning that takes place all year round. The activities that companies run range from non-work related and interest-led activities through award ceremonies to business focused sessions. Learning at Work Week offers an opportunity to promote and deliver these in a way that is fresh, exciting and engaging. You can take part in LAW Week as a learner, workplace, learning provider, ULR or learning champion. Last year, thousands of organisations took part. Companies that have taken part in previous years include WH Smith, Warburtons, American Express, Prudential and BSkyB.
Museums at Night, which explodes into life from 15th-17th May, is an annual UK-wide festival which seeks to encourage visitors into museums, galleries and heritage sites by throwing their doors open after hours and putting on special evening events. There really is something for everyone here as events held at museums up and down the country are varied and not necessarily tied to what the museums are best known for.
Past events have included: A recreated air battle Build a beehive Make a clay or mosaic tile, or patchwork quilt square, for a community project Try Roman skills e.g. writing on wax tablets Go on military manoeuvres after dark with former soldiers Silent disco on light-up dance floor Firing historic guns, cannon and mortars Dissection night / learn surgical suturing / amputations Paranormal investigation Young Chefs challenge Community-made short films projected on to building Nature walks discovering moths and bats / learning to use bat detectors For more information on all of these events please visit www.alw.org.uk

Pets Corner
Get Bitten by The Spring Cleaning Bug ❱ BY KATE CHAPMAN
Spring is here! It’s time to throw the windows open and get cleaning. If you’ve got house pets, there are some added tips worth considering. Here’s our top list! “And remember, loose pet hair makes great nesting material, so put it to good use outside for the birds!”
Shedding Dealing with loose pet hair is a cleaning priority. The majority of pets lose their hair when the weather warms up, and that hair ends up decorating your house. You can’t prevent shedding unless you own hairless pets, but all that pet hair can trigger conditions such as asthma. As well as washing bedding and giving everything a thorough clean, you may also consider a shedding tool like the Furminator.
Bedding Pets love their smelly beds, but owners do not! If your dog or cat has a permanent bed, then it will need cleaning. Firstly, use a sticky roller or damp washing-up gloves to remove hair and prevent a washing-machine blockage.
Then, wash all blankets as hot as you are able with plenty of detergent. If bedding can’t be washed, consider dry-cleaning, or purchase a spray to minimise odours. This cleaning regime will help prevent parasites from breeding; especially those fleas and ticks that emerge in springtime.
Toys Dogs and cats carry bacteria in their mouths that are unhealthy for humans; especially children. Surface wash plastic toys and hot wash fabric toys in the washing machine. Throw away any fabric toys that are older than a few months because, as they dry, the salvia rots through material and causes really unpleasant smells.
Upholstery As much as we try, it’s a losing battle to keep Fido and Tiddles off beds and sofas. You can use a Pet Hair Magnet to remove any loose hairs and, once scrubbed down, cover upholstery with easy washable throws. Prevention is better than the cure! Use a good quality Stain and Odour Remover Spray on pet accidents to neutralise the urine scent and to help prevent repeat marking.
Little and Often The best way to de-pet your home is to clean as you go. Wash all their bedding once a month and make sure your pets are de-fleaed regularly to avoid annoying itchy ankles! And remember, loose pet hair makes great nesting material, so put it to good use outside for the birds!

When young children begin to be interested in making scribbles, shapes and patterns on paper it is known as ‘mark- making’ ❱ BY MELANIE FOSTER, MUNCHKINS KINDERGARTEN
As the children develop they will start to talk about what it is that they have drawn or written and become interested in sharing it with others, this is the start of emergent writing. Before young children acquire these skills there are lots of fun activities that can help develop both the physical and creative skills needed to progress. Here at Munchkins, these activities begin at a very young age before pens and pencils are introduced and can be recreated at home on a smaller scale if desired. One idea is to place some ready-made custard or ‘gloop’ made from corn flour and water onto a high chair tray, low table or a tray on the floor. Then just let them explore the medium and discover what happens as they move their fingers through it making marks. This eventually develops into writing and drawing as they get older. You can use this idea for any age group, not just young babies. Older children really enjoy this sort of activity as well and making

children with the finer actions needed for eventual letter formation. Ready mix paint, sand and shaving foam are great substances for tiny hands to explore and will often tempt the most reluctant writer to practice their skills. Now that the weather is becoming warmer many of these activities could take place in the garden, alternatively a large plastic cloth on the floor indoors and a sense of humour should make for a fun filled time.

f you’d told me several years ago one day I’d be spending the best part of a whole day trying to carve a tractor out of sponge cake I’m sure I would have laughed in your face. Flash forward to 2014, and that’s exactly how I spent the other Friday - all in readiness for Peter’s second birthday. Some of you might suggest I have too much time on my hands, but ever since the kids came along celebration cakes seem to have escalated out of control. We’ve gone from a plain old Victoria Sponge, filled with lashings of jam and cream with a blob of icing on top, to what can only be described as works of art, involving hours of rolling out rainbow coloured icing and making intricate models from sugar paste. It’s my own doing - I enjoy baking and like trying new techniques but if I’m honest, I’m a little bit worried where it’s all going to end. We’ve had giant hedgehogs covered
in chocolate button spikes, a pirate face and last year Nancy insisted the only thing she’d entertain on her cake was, of course, Peppa Pig. Even though he’s only two and can’t really say much yet, there’s no doubting what Peter wanted adorning his - a tractor. I got a bit carried away searching the internet for inspiration before settling on a rather extravagant twotier creation, complete with mud, gates and John Deere markings. My kitchen was covered in icing sugar and my hands looked like they belonged to the Incredible Hulk by the time I finished, but all the effort was worth it just to see the big grin on his face when it was presented to him. It’s by far the best thing I’ve ever made in the kitchen - and something I fear I won’t be able to top, although that hasn’t stopped Nancy putting in her order for a giant fairy come her birthday this summer. Let’s just hope I can pull it off and she gets to have her cake and eat it!
* This is my last Mum Knows Best column - I hope you’ve enjoyed reading all about our exploits over the last two years - we’ve certainly enjoyed sharing them with you.

Focus on Donington
Celebrating Flinders ❱ BY KATE CHAPMAN
C
It may be 200 years since his death, but 2014 marks an important milestone for explorer Captain Matthew Flinders
aptain Matthew Flinders is due to be honoured with a statue in London this summer. Distinguished navigator and cartographer Flinders was born in Donington, on March 16, 1774 and went on to become the first person to circumnavigate Australia, name it and identify it as a continent after setting out in 1801. Today the name Flinders is associated with more than 100 geographical features and places in Down Under, where he’s considered the main explorer of the state. These include the Flinders University, Flinders Ranges and Flinders Chase National Park, while back home it’s a different story - the only memorial is a statue in his birthplace. However, all that’s set to change this July, when on the 200th anniversary of his death, a commemorative statue will be unveiled on the concourse at Euston Station, in London. A campaign backed by South Australia’s Government was launched for a memorial at the station, where Flinders is said to be buried, to commemorate his legacy. Celebrations in Donington will take place on July 11 this year, and will include a church service and special meal.
“...this July, when on the 200th anniversary of his death, a commemorative statue will be unveiled on the concourse at Euston Station, in London.”
Right: Statue of Flinders outside St Paul’s Cathedral, Melbourne. Left: Captain Matthew Flinders served on the Bellerophon at the battle as a midshipman.
FLINDERS was born in Donington, the son of a surgeon, and joined the Royal Navy in 1789, after being inspired by reading Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe. He was just 15 years old when he took to the sea aboard HMS Alert, and the following year sailed with Captain Bligh on the Providence to Tahiti, where he honed his navigation skills. In the following years Flinders befriended George Bass, and the pair made a number of small journeys, redefining the charts of the New South Wales coast. In 1798 they circumnavigated 30 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING
Tasmania, proving it was an island. By 1801 Flinders had been given command of the Investigator and a commission from Sir Joseph Banks to explore the entire coast of Terra Australis in a voyage scheduled to last four years. Flinders completed his historic journey in June 1803 but was jailed by the French in Mauritius, where he had stopped for repairs to his ship as he made his way back to Britain. He remained in prison for six years before returning to Britain in 1810, when he was able to work on his map and account of his journey.
The three volumes took four years to complete, and were not published until 1814, as the mariner lay on his deathbed. He died on July 19, 1814 aged 40, providing a lasting legacy as one of the world’s most accomplished explorers with key contributions to the science of navigation.

Summer Security ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
H
During the summer we all look forward to a week or two away from our jobs and a much-needed getaway on holiday
owever, all the time you are away from home there can be the nagging worry that thieves may target your house. Unless you have someone willing and able to check the property over every day there are difficult decisions to be made such as whether to leave the curtains open or closed – either can give away that the property is unoccupied. But what else can you do to keep thieves at bay? And indeed what can you do to protect your house even if you are only out for short periods? Here are some tips to make your property more secure for any amount of time, be it an hour or a fortnight. Make sure you keep your valuables out of view – put them in drawers, cupboards and away from windows. Don’t leave watches, jewellery, stereos and iPods on display. For general security you can download tracking software onto laptops and mobile phones (see www. immobilise.com) as this will mean if the worse does happen and they get stolen, then if they are recovered they will be returned to you. Make sure windows are not just closed but locked as well when you go out – and ensure any keys used to close doors and windows are not left in the keyhole, but removed and put well out of sight. Keep all access to your house locked, so that means gates to the garden – remember any thief who can just walk round the back of your house will have a greater chance of being unnoticed and can undertake an attempted break in with less chance of being seen. A property alarm is a good bet. It’s widely known that thieves who scout areas looking for suitable properties to target will give those with an alarm a wider berth, and
“Keeping your property and possessions safe really is a matter of common sense and making sure that if you are not in, you are not inviting anyone else in!”
most likely leave them alone totally; it’s an extra hassle they do not need. So even if you have just a dummy alarm box on the side of the house, but in full display, then the chances are it will deter would-be thieves. But getting a proper alarm fitted, one that will activate, is well worth the expense. You can buy ready to install packages from the larger DIY stores or alternatively you can enlist the services of a security provider – it just depends upon your security needs. If you want your alarm to be monitored so that when it goes off someone is notified, the better option is professional installation from a reputable security provider. Some providers might offer keyholding services so that you can always be assured of a prompt response when the alarm goes off. Dave Simpson, Director of Donington-based security specialist GBSG is seeing more households opt for keyholding services for both peace of mind and practicality – peace of mind that a professionally trained and licensed security officer will attend to the alarm within a 20 minute timeframe when a house is empty, and practicality as there may be no family members living close by to look after the spare key. Plus, would you really want a relative or friend going to your home and entering a potentially dangerous situation? Another consideration is how an alarm might affect your insurance. Many insurance providers will offer a reduced premium for homes that have a professional fitted National Inspectorate (NSI) accredited burglar alarm – and that’s a good….time to remind you to make sure you have home and contents insurance and that it is up to date and will cover you for when you are away. If you’re gardening, hanging out washing, barbecuing or relaxing in the garden make sure your house is locked. An opportunist thief can get in and out of the house in a few minutes. And indeed these can be more costly – if you’ve left your wallet or purse in the kitchen worktop while you pop into the garden – a thief may see it and try their luck – if the front door is unlocked, you’ve basically handed it to them on a plate. Don’t leave garden tools outside, as while a hoe or a spade might not be of value, they could be used to force entry and commit a burglary. Even leaving a pile of bricks around is a gift for a burglar who is prepared to break the windows. On the subject of leaving things in the garden, where possible don’t leave bikes and outdoors and make sure your garage is also locked at all times – again, a wide open garage could see a thief in and out in a few minutes. Such opportunist moments could be avoided not only by removing temptation but also by the use of electronic gates – ideal for keeping unwanted visitors out! Time to turn up the heat ❱ BY KATE CHAPMAN
As we head into May summer is just around the corner, so what better time to start thinking about getting the barbecue out, or maybe even buying a new one “Gas will provide instant heat and can cook food quickly, making it ideal if you want to cook outdoors.”
B
ut before you hit the shops and part with your hard-earned cash there are a few things to take into consideration which might affect what you buy. There are endless different types of barbecue ranging in size from small portable grills up to massive outdoor kitchens with six burners and it’s important to think about which will best meet your needs. Would you prefer a gas or charcoal powered barbecue, how often do you plan to use it, and how many will you cater for? Not to mention how much you want to spend? All these questions and more will impact on your final decision. If you’re catering for small family gatherings, roughly six people, then a two-burner or medium sized charcoal barbecue should be more than adequate. For larger gatherings three or four burner gas models are larger and enable you to cook more food all in one go. However many guests you have, choose a model that features a warming rack as this will keep cooked food warm while everything else is on catching up on the grill. Eating al fresco puts us at the mercy of the elements, so it’s worthwhile thinking about whether you
want a gas or charcoal model. Gas will provide instant heat and can cook food quickly, making it ideal if you want to cook outdoors but are limited for time such as on weekday evenings or cooler days. Charcoal barbecues on the other hand can be tricky to light and can take a long time to heat up to optimum cooking temperature, making them better suited to weekend parties and times when you have longer to enjoy the whole outdoor cooking experience. It’s also worthwhile thinking about the kind of things you might want to cook on your barbecue too; as well as grilling sausage and burgers many models have extra features capable of frying, boiling, baking and roasting a whole range of foods. Whatever you choose - happy cooking!
Barbecue safety advice Barbecues should be safe and enjoyable occasions, but it’s all too easy to become distracted when you have guests around you while cooking. To avoid injury or damage to property make sure • Your barbecue’s in good working order • That it’s on a flat site, well away from a shed, fence, trees or shrubs • Children, garden games and pets are kept away from the cooking area • The barbecue is not left unattended • You keep a bucket of water or sand nearby for emergencies • The barbecue is cool before attempting to move it 36 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING

Home Project
Make your bedroom a sanctuary Ideally the master bedroom is a quiet haven where you can get away from the hustle and bustle of the rest of the home
I
❱ BY KATE CHAPMAN
f you’re boudoir’s anything but a place of relaxation and rest maybe it’s time to think about changing the décor, to help create a more serene and welcoming environment. Its sounds an expensive exercise, but making your bedroom a calming and tranquil sanctuary doesn’t need to be costly - we’ve compiled a few handy tips to help you transform your room into your very own little haven.....
Switch off If you’re using your bedroom as a work space or a place to watch television, chances are you’ll find it more difficult to relax there. Why not think about switching off and removing electrical equipment to elsewhere in the house and make your bedroom a screen free zone.
Curl up If you’ve got the space, why not consider adding a cosy seating area? Not only will it give you somewhere to seek solace away from the rest of the house, but will also provide the ideal place to curl up and enjoy a good book in peace.
overflowing with clothes, shoes and accessories you no longer wear, take the time to sort them out, getting rid of the things you no longer wear.
Neutral tones
Glamour
Neutral colours are calming and create a wonderfully peaceful environment - think about incorporating these into your room’s colour scheme. Alternatively changing your linens is a cost-effective way of altering the look and ambience of your room, and if you still want a splash of colour go for cool tones like blues and greens rather than brighter red and orange hues.
Add a touch of glamour to your room by including some statement pieces like a sparkling chandelier or even a canopy above your bed. Think about adding a vanity unit if you don’t already have one, as this will give you a dedicated space to keep cosmetics and get ready for those special occasions. Rather than tuck a full length mirror away on the back of the bedroom door, make it a feature of your room with a large, ornately framed one in a prominent place.
De-clutter If your bedroom is covered in piles of clothes, books and even toys chances are you won’t be able to relax among the clutter. Tidy up and put everything away. If you’ve got wardrobes and cupboards
“transform your room into your very own little haven...”
Pictures Don’t confine pictures to your downstairs living areas - they can be a tranquil addition to any bedroom too. Why not hang some of your favourite photographs on a feature wall? Pictures of your nearest and dearest and favourite places will help you unwind, relax and remember happier times.

f you are after some advice about your plans for new flooring then they don’t come much more experienced than Geoff Holland. With 48 years of experience in the industry there’s not a lot he doesn’t know when it comes to getting the job done to the highest standards. Geoff began his career straight from school, spending many years working for national flooring companies. Ten years ago he decided to set up Creative Floors, specialising in carpets, wood, luxury vinyl and tile. In the first of his at-home showrooms he offers both laminate and engineered wood, with the most recognised brand being Quickstep. Next to that, in his dedicated carpet showroom, you will find Axminster and Brinton carpets as well as many well known and most trusted brands. When I ask Geoff what sets Creative Floors apart from others he says he is proud of the service they offer: “First of all we have in-house fitters, we don’t employ contractors so we can guarantee the standard of service. We don’t just turn up as-and-when and lay flooring, we like to go the extra mile. We turn up on time, fit your flooring professionally moving furniture where necessary and make sure everything is as it should be when we’ve finished – we’ve been known to trim doors to ensure a perfect fit!” Creative Floors are retail members of the Carpet Foundation. Geoff explains: “It was something we wanted to do to inspire confidence in our customers, there are many benefits to them of us being members.” And he’s right. You never know, you may end up with something completely different to what you thought you wanted!” Another big benefit is that there is no waiting around – most work is completed within 14 days of order. “We’re happy to work to people’s timescales” says Geoff “ not having to wait weeks can be a real help if you are really looking to crack on with your redecorating”.

I ask about the type of jobs Creative Floors take on. “We do all sorts of work, both commercial and domestic. We cover a 50 mile radius but we won’t turn work away if it comes from further afield – we’ve recently done a job in Norwich due to recommendation. ” From the smallest room to flooring throughout your home or business it seems that there is no job too big or too small. With the sheer amount of samples on display in the showroom I wonder how Geoff selects the right samples for home visits. It’s trickier than it looks: “Ideally I would like people to come and visit the showroom first as we have, I believe, the most extensive display in the area. We are more than happy to go on home visits but we are only able to take a small selection of what we have to offer so I really would recommend a visit to see us

Gardening project
The Good Life! ❱ BY VICKY SENKEY-DUNN
Today, more and more people are allocating parts of their garden to growing fruit and vegetables and keeping chickens “It is hard work (although not complicated work) but this will pale into insignificance the first time you are sat enjoying a meal made in your own back garden!”
I
f you haven’t yet thought about doing the same or are wondering where to start then now is the time! Growing your own fruit and veg need not be a challenge. And owning chickens for meat and eggs can be enjoyable. For starters, eggs from your own, free range hens are far tastier than those you get from a supermarket. I have three hens who are all good layers. I get three eggs a day and they are perfect. It’s also nice knowing exactly where your produce has come from. To keep hens, you need to buy them from a reliable source; I got mine from a small farm near Boston where they showed me round so I could see the birds were kept well. They had all their vaccinations, been tested for Salmonella and were at the age where they would start laying. Sure enough, within a couple of weeks, we had our first results. The hens cost between £8 and £17 each (depending on the breed) so are not expensive. You’ll need a hen house and if you don’t want them roaming around your garden a chicken run, and you can get these from the local pet shop. Cover the hen house and nest box floor with suitable bedding, and make sure there is a decent size perch for them to roost on at night. Free range or cooped, make sure your hens always have
44 | www.simplyspalding.co.uk | SIMPLY SPALDING
access to fresh water and some approved hen food every day and that’s pretty much it. Clean the hen house out every week or so and spray to combat red mite (especially important in during the summer months), and treat them to a few veg and they’ll be happy. My hens particularly love nettles! Growing vegetables can also be very rewarding. First, plan your vegetable plot and improve the soil by digging it over and removing any roots and weeds. The next job is to add bulky organic material such as manure. Also make sure you start a compost heap as producing your own garden compost will provide a regular supply of goodness for your soil which is essential. When deciding what to grow, make sure you keep the following vegetables together: Cabbages, cauliflower, sprouts, kale, swedes and turnips / onions, shallots, leeks and garlic / carrots, celery and parsnips / potatoes and tomatoes / peas and beans. As long as these groups are on a different area each year during the cycle, other vegetables such as lettuce and beetroot can be fitted around them. To look after your crops they will need water which will mostly come from rain, but water them yourself if necessary to get them off to a good start. Water young plants for two weeks in dry weather to help them get going and thereafter there should be enough moisture in the soil. During a hot summer, make sure you give them a good drenching every week as opposed to a daily sprinkling. For most vegetables, using a balanced fertiliser will ensure the best results. Remember that weeds will compete for water and nutrients so must be controlled and removed. Also beware of minibeasts - keep pests off with fine netting and organic slug pellets will protect your patch from slugs and snails whilst not harming any other wildlife. Flying insects should be kept off by using garden fleece or fine mesh netting which you can pick up at your local garden centre. It is hard work (although not complicated work) but this will pale into insignificance the first time you are sat enjoying a meal made in your own back garden!

Business Focus
The Hog Master of Spalding The Hog Master of Spalding is a family run business set up by Nick and Caroline Richer “We can offer the whole wedding breakfast including cheese boards, teas and coffees as well as full waitress service.”
For further details, sample menus and a booking form please head to www.hogmaster ofspalding.co.uk. Or call us on 01775 711259 or 07715 386613.
S
ince its inception the business has gone from strength to strength so much so that the couple have diversified from just providing hog roasts to meat roasts such as lamb and beef as well sausage
and mash. The rapid growth has also allowed Nick to give up his full time job to concentrate on developing the business. Nick says “we have started to accept a lot more corporate bookings during the week which is something we have never been able to do because of the timing and the fact that we were both working”. These corporate bookings include country fairs as well company functions such as open and away days and golf days. This move into the corporate world does not however affect the family hog roast celebrations which have been the bedrock of The Hog Master of Spalding. Nick and Caroline agree, “It works really well as the corporate functions tend to be during the week which leaves us the weekend to host the family occasions such as christening, birthday and anniversary celebrations. These events are really important to us as this is where much of our new business is generated. Many of our bookings are from guests who we have met at a hog roast. This, coupled with the number of recommendations we receive, has meant we haven’t had to invest in large marketing campaigns which in turn has meant we have been able to keep our prices competitive and in our opinion, very good value for money”. On that note the quality of the meat produced is a key selling factor in that all of the meat is locally sourced and is of a high quality. All of the salads and desserts are homemade including coleslaw, stuffing and apple sauce. This is crucial to the success and the power of the personal recommendations in generating future business. Anyone can empty a jar of shop bought apple sauce into a bowl and present it nicely but for Nick and Caroline this isn’t the reason why their guests recommend the Hog Master for future business. It is the fact that everything is freshly prepared, not forgetting the crunchy crackling which is always a highlight for the guests. In addition to the corporate and family occasions, weddings also feature heavily in the Hog Master’s repertoire. With couples often working to a tight budget, offering a hog roast with all the trimmings is a
good alternative to a hotel and considerably cheaper. Caroline adds, “many of the weddings we have catered for have been in church or village halls and they have been decorated beautifully. In doing so, there is far more freedom in the bride and groom controlling what they want as well as the flexibility around timings for serving of food etc. We can offer the whole wedding breakfast including cheese boards, teas and coffees as well as full waitress service.” The Hog Master of Spalding is certainly busy and getting busier so a word of warning is perhaps to plan ahead and book well in advance to help secure the date you want. As a final note, don’t forget that hog roasts are not all about meat eaters. The Hog Master also caters for vegetarians and vegans and Caroline is currently working on perfecting her home made hummus!
The attention to presentation also extends to the plates and cutlery used. The Hog Master now uses environmentally friendly banana leaf plates and cutlery. The plates themselves are a talking point as each plate has an individual natural pattern and colouring. “We got the idea from a 21st birthday party we catered for. We thought they were so unique and added a real wow factor to the evening. We haven’t looked back so thank you Annabel!” says Caroline. SIMPLY SPALDING | www.simplyspalding.co.uk |

Mercedes-Benz SLK 250 CDI
T
If you really like driving then a roadster is the sort of car you probably desire – unless there’s one in your garage already
here’s something intoxicating about two-up, open-top motoring. Traditionally, these cars are powered with petrol. But Mercedes-Benz has gone one further with its SLK 250 CDI Roadster and fitted a diesel engine into it. While oil-burning drop-tops have been a premium manufacturer product for a few years now, this is the first two-seat, rear-drive convertible that runs on the stuff. The 204 bhp four-cylinder lump puts the MercedesBenz at the top of its class in several respects. With an average fuel consumption of 56.5 mpg it’s the most economical roadster in its sector. The frugal fuel drinking makes the SLK 250 CDI a car with superior long-distance qualities. It is for example quite possible to drive from the North Sea in the UK to a beach on the Mediterranean non-stop. Supportive sports seats, a decent suspension setup and the largest luggage capacity in this car category also do their bit to create the right conditions. I drove the 250 CDI AMG Sport model. Thanks to bags of low down shove and a 7G-TRONIC PLUS automatic transmission, it accelerates from 0-62 mph in 6.7 seconds. This means the car has another feather in its cap: it’s the most powerful diesel model in its class. The result is dramatic driving enjoyment both on twisty country roads and motorway stretches. As it shares the same genes as other members of the SLK family, the 250 CDI combines its alert
“To be honest, there are so few areas for criticism. The motor is what it is...”
acceleration with stylish comfort, a stunning sports car design and day-to-day suitability. The SLK 250 CDI is available with a choice of three versions of the German motor-manufacturer’s famous vario-roof – one of them the panoramic vario-roof with Magic Sky Control. This glass top can be changed from dark to transparent at the touch of a button. It’s clever stuff – especially if the weather means you can’t drop the roof but you still want to feel natural light flooding into the cabin. There are also three suspension versions available: a conventional steel suspension, a sports suspension with a stiffer spring and damper setup or a suspension with an electronically controlled, automatic damping system. The latter is part of the Dynamic Handling package, which also includes the Direct-Steer system and the Torque Vectoring Brake developed by Mercedes-Benz for particularly responsive and predictable handling characteristics. The SLK 250 CDI went on sale in 2012, yet it still looks like it’s just rolled out of the MercedesBenz design studios. Externally it’s no different in appearance from the petrol models. It even retains the twin exhaust system, and therefore has the same electrifying look for which all the SLK models are known. To be honest, there are so few areas for criticism. The motor is what it is: a two-seater sports car, so there’s little point moaning about lack of space for the dog and kids. Sure, I can see some petrol-purists turning their nose up at a diesel offering, but with the SLK 250 CDI’s pulling power and economy, it’s obvious why it’s such a good choice – even if you do need over £35,000 to afford a brand new one.
